The TRUTH About Lane Kiffin at LSU - Josh Pate's College Football Show
Josh Pate's College Football Show
0:00 The truth teller series is what we do this time
0:02 of year where we just pick a certain topic
0:03 or a person or whatever and just kind of tell
0:06 the truth about them as best we know the truth.
0:08 And we we spun the the wheel tonight and it landed on Lane Keifin.
0:14 But specifically, you know, Lane Kein over the last few years,
0:18 Lane Keifin even over the last year,
0:20 that's like a whole book, a whole novel if you will.
0:22 The move from Old Miss to LSU.
0:24 What's the truth about all that?
0:25 Well, I think the truth about Lane in general historically
0:29 is going to have to be split into two categories.
0:31 So, you got two compartments, if you will.
0:33 You got the one compartment, which is Lane Keifin, the person.
0:36 And I don't think many people are changing their minds at this point.
0:38 Everyone's got a pretty fully formed opinion
0:41 on what they think of Lane Kein, the person.
0:44 Now, most of you don't know Lane Kein,
0:45 the person, but you know, of Lane Keifin, the person.
0:48 So, you got your opinion on that.
0:50 Let's table that for a second.
0:51 Then over here in this compartment, you've got Lane Keifin, the football coach.
0:56 That one is still very much evolving.
0:59 One of them is set.
1:00 The other one, I think, very much is not.
1:03 So Lane Keifin at LSU has the chance to become a legend,
1:08 has the chance to become an icon.
1:10 He has the chance to do at LSU what Nick Sabin did, what Les Miles did.
1:14 Ed Orzon found a way to do it.
1:16 Brian Kelly, this millennium,
1:17 is the only guy who didn't find a way to win a championship there.
1:20 And if he wins a championship there,
1:22 then it will affirm everything that they believed about
1:25 him that made them pursue him in the first place.
1:28 And also Lane coming in there was it was part
1:32 it was like the face of this this big churn.
1:37 There's a ton of change down there,
1:39 but there was also a ton of looking around the country and realizing,
1:43 oh, that's the way college football works now.
1:46 Well, game on and Lane's going to be the face of it.
1:50 Now, if he falls flat on his face, well, that's one thing.
1:55 And, you know, at that point, okay, well, he still had his years at Old Miss.
1:59 Uh, he still lasted a lot longer than most
2:02 people thought he would when he got tarmaced at USC.
2:05 Like, no, no one who in the world would have ever predicted him
2:08 all these years later to be the head coach at multiple SEC stops,
2:11 ending with LSU, which is a premier job in college football.
2:15 But even if he fails there,
2:16 he will have accomplished more than most people thought he would if you
2:20 go back to that period in time where he got fired at USC.
2:22 But that's not the fun thing to talk about.
2:24 The fun thing to talk about is if Lane Keifin gets it rolling at LSU,
2:28 which he's almost certain to do to some degree,
2:32 then you will not find probably a more entertaining,
2:36 mustwatch, just fun team to follow.
2:40 I think about like Sheay Dixon who's who's just been on the LSU beat
2:44 for a long time and I think about
2:47 Sheay Dixon being able to cover Lane Kein's LSU.
2:52 Uh but going back to the decision for just
2:54 a second because that was kind of, you know,
2:56 the genesis for why we talked about this tonight.
3:00 Hey, do me one favor right here.
3:01 Look down.
3:02 Are you subscribed to the channel?
3:03 If you are, thank you.
3:04 If you're not, please click subscribe.
3:06 It helps us keep the show free and free of corporate interference.
3:10 All right, that's it for me.
3:11 Back to the clip.
3:12 Everybody's got an opinion, it seems.
3:15 Or go back to the time it was happening.
3:17 You remember December, Miss LSU, Lane Keifin,
3:25 and Miss is headed towards the playoff.
3:28 And we talked about it for several weeks on this show.
3:30 I mean, November was a crazy time last year because LSU has already fired Kelly.
3:35 You know, they've circled Lane Keifin.
3:36 Everyone knows they've circled Lane Kein.
3:38 Lane Keifin knows they've circled Lane Kein.
3:40 Old Miss knows they've circled Lane Kein.
3:42 And Miss and Lane Keifin are in the thick of a playoff run.
3:45 And then it was, well, what do you do?
3:48 What do you do if you're lane and you're going to make the playoff?
3:51 What do you do if LSU says, "Hey, we need you down here.
3:54 Signing day is coming up right after the regular season wraps.
3:57 We don't care if you make the playoff.
3:59 If you're taking our job,
4:00 you're going to be down here coaching this team, running this program.
4:04 We're not paying you to stay up in Oxford, Mississippi.
4:06 Hey, what are you doing?
4:07 Everyone had an opinion.
4:08 And I remember pretty consistently saying then,
4:11 as I will say now that we know how the story ended,
4:15 nobody else's opinion mattered.
4:16 His mattered.
4:18 So like some people out there looked at it
4:21 and said it's foolish to think LSU is a significant step
4:25 up from Old Miss in today's college football because
4:28 of what portal and nil have done to flatten things out.
4:31 Like if Kurt Signetti can walk into Indiana
4:33 and do what he's done over Ohio State,
4:36 certainly you could duplicate those kind of results
4:39 in the modern day at Old Miss over LSU.
4:42 And that's a fair stance to have.
4:46 But Lane didn't have that stance is the only point.
4:49 So it didn't even matter if I thought it.
4:52 I'm not the one who's being pursued.
4:54 Lane Keifin was.
4:55 So he obviously looked at it and said even today it is a significant jump
5:03 up in caliber of job to go to LSU as opposed to remaining at Old Miss.
5:07 Well, that was the long and short of it.
5:09 And then you can be mad at him, which a lot of people will be.
5:12 You can choose to not forgive him, which a lot of people won't.
5:15 You could be an outsider and just look and say,
5:17 "I don't know if I would have done that." Or, "Oh,
5:19 absolutely I would have done that." Doesn't matter.
5:22 Didn't matter what I thought or you thought or anything like that.
5:24 That's the truth of it.
5:25 Now, it is also true that he could very much come to regret the decision.
5:31 That happens all the time.
5:32 That happens all the time.
5:34 It's also true that we could look back on it five years from now and say,
5:38 "That's the best decision he could have ever made." That's the fun of it.
5:42 We don't know yet.
5:43 Every Saturday, I wake up and before I even put my contacts in, I
5:49 use one eye and I scroll index finger like this through the eye.
5:53 Josh and I find the cornfield picture and I tweeted out
5:58 with a reminder of how many Saturdays we are from college football season.
6:04 Alex and allegedly producer Jesse allegedly looked at that and said,
6:11 "Well, if that means college football is coming eventually,
6:15 and we've got the P State store over here
6:17 just sitting there with infinite amounts of shelf space,
6:21 why shouldn't we put representation about college
6:26 football approaching in the store?" And then they
6:30 found out that Savannah State has recently gotten
6:33 me to watch Game of Thrones very recently.
6:37 It's a new thing.
6:37 I don't know what to think about it yet.
6:39 But what I do know is whatever winter is coming means is of secondary
6:46 concern to me at the moment because
6:48 college football coming is of primary concern.
6:51 And as you can see here, we have brand new items, not merch,
6:57 items in the Pate State store to signify that football is coming,
7:01 ladies and gentlemen.
7:02 It will be here.
7:03 Now, in the meantime, we can have a lot of fun.
7:07 Just a just a sun-filled, vacationfilled summer.
7:11 And there's also a new shirt for the Pate
7:12 State Summer Series just made up right now.
7:15 Uh, but yeah, we got two new items in the Pstate store, pstatemate.com.
7:19 Jesse predicts that the football is coming shirt
7:21 will be our biggest mover of the month.
7:23 I think you've got an unfair advantage because it's a new item.
7:26 So, I'm not betting him on it.
7:28 But yeah, I already bought the sleeveless version.
7:31 I had Alex make sleeveless versions.
7:33 By the way, I know our audience.
7:34 Jesse may not lift, but our audience lifts.
