Meg Stalter Might Have Stolen Madonna’s Coachella Outfit
Late Night with Seth Meyers
0:00 -Welcome back, everybody.
0:02 Our next guest is a very talented actress
0:03 and comedian you know from the Netflix series "Too Much"
0:05 as well as the HBO Max series "Hacks." New
0:08 episodes of its fifth and final season premiere Thursdays.
0:11 Let's take a look.
0:12 -I just normally sleep naked.
0:14 -Well, sorry, but tonight you're not sleeping naked.
0:17 Okay?
0:18 -Okay, Jimmy.
0:27 Crying] -What is going on over there?
0:30 -I'm so itchy.
0:31 My clothes are making me itchy.
0:33 -Okay, you can take off your clothes underneath the covers,
0:36 but then in the morning, you're putting them back on under the covers.
0:38 Okay?
0:39 -Yay!
0:41 Take off my lady boxers.
0:43 -Okay.
0:43 I don't need a play by play.
0:45 Just do your thing.
0:46 -Please welcome to the show, Meg Stalter!
0:49 Cheers and applause]♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪[ Cheers and applause continue] You can come closer.
1:19 Well, hi.
1:19 -How are you doing, Seth?
1:21 -I'm great.
1:21 It's so— It's so nice to— Congratulations on season
1:25 5 of "Hacks."[ Cheers and applause] And show's ending.
1:32 We're all— We're all very— -Sorry.
1:34 Let me just get my stuff together.
1:35 -Sure.
1:35 Yeah.
1:35 No.
1:36 Take your time.
1:36 -Yeah, cause you're, like,
1:37 kind of just on a train I need to get on before you take off.
1:40 -Oh, yeah.
1:40 No, please.
1:41 I— On your schedule.
1:44 We're all very sad the show's ending,
1:46 but very excited about this career pivot that...
1:50 Laughter] ...you're going through.
1:54 -Yeah.
1:54 I mean, I have an announcement to make.
1:56 Did you want me to make it now or later?
1:57 -No.
1:58 Now is great.
1:59 Yeah.
2:00 -So, my announcement— I love you, by the way.
2:03 You're awesome.
2:03 -Oh, my God.
2:04 Thank you.
2:04 It's great to have you.
2:04 Thank you.
2:06 -So, I will no longer be acting anymore.
2:08 I will be doing music.
2:10 -Wow.
2:11 Cheers and applause] -I'll be doing music!
2:15 -It's really exciting.
2:17 And I'm glad you're excited about— Your look— This is a very iconic look.
2:21 And by that I mean— -I feel like I took so long telling Kayla's story and I
2:25 got to do that, and now I get to tell my own story through my music.
2:29 -Yeah.
2:29 -Go ahead.
2:30 What were you saying?
2:31 -Well, I was just, um— There's a familiarity to your outfit.
2:37 -What do you mean?
2:38 -Well, so, it's— It looks almost exactly like Madonna's Coachella outfit.
2:43 And now, this is an outfit— -Wait.
2:45 Did she— She— Okay.
2:46 Yeah.
2:47 That does kind of— I could see a little bit of the, like, resemblance.
2:49 Yeah.
2:50 -Yeah, well, the other thing— -She ended up wearing that to this Coachella?
2:54 -She did.
2:54 And then it went missing.
2:57 And then that, I guess is maybe because
2:59 of just the sim...ilarities— -I haven't heard about that.
3:04 -Oh.
3:05 -So this is a coin— The match is a coincidence?
3:08 -I would not steal a corset, and a corset is so tight,
3:11 how could you seal it off someone?
3:13 -Well, I don't think— Nobody said you stole
3:15 it while she was wearing it, I think.
3:18 I think the supposition was maybe that after she took it off, that's all.
3:22 -So you think that I was scooting around Coachella waiting.
3:25 "Oh, I can't wait till Madonna takes that--" That's
3:28 weird that you would think that I would do that.
3:30 -Well, I— Okay.
3:31 -And, like—[ Laughter] I also feel like me and Sabrina are more the same size,
3:35 so I feel like I should have stole something from her.
3:37 -Yes.
3:37 You know what?
3:38 You know what?
3:39 I'm gonna let it drop because obviously this is a dead end,
3:41 and I'm sorry I brought it up.
3:42 -Do you think I stole it?
3:43 -I do not.
3:44 -Okay.
3:45 -I just think— -We're all good here.
3:46 -I just think— -Did you steal your blouse off somebody?
3:49 Laughter] A beautiful male model?
3:52 -Okay.
3:53 So, I take issue with you calling it a blouse.
3:56 Laughter] -A blouse is just a shirt.
3:59 What do you think I'm implying about it?
4:00 -I just think if— go with shirt.
4:04 -I am Southern.
4:05 I say blouse.
4:07 Sorry.
4:07 -Okay.
4:09 -By the way, this mike is ruining the outfit.
4:11 Laughter] -That mike is— -And it's not doing any favors to your blouse.
4:15 I'm kidding, guys.
4:16 I'm kidding, I'm kidding, Seth.
4:18 -We're back.
4:18 We're back.
4:19 -Yeah, yeah.
4:20 -I want to talk about your single "Prettiest Girl
4:22 in America."[ Cheers and applause] It's a great song.
4:25 Great song.
4:26 We were talking backstage.
4:27 It's a banger.
4:29 And wait.
4:30 Can you just talk to everybody?
4:31 I think everybody want to know the inspiration for what
4:33 led you to write the song "Prettiest Girl in America." -Okay,
4:36 so I feel like as a songwriter, you kind of write about your life.
4:40 And I noticed that I was the prettiest.
4:43 -Right.
4:43 -And I also feel like I have become more famous.
4:47 And there's a line in the song that says,
4:49 "do you know how it feels to go to a restaurant and know that you could buy
4:52 the whole restaurant?" I think it's interesting that we
4:54 actually did decide to rhyme restaurant with restaurant.
4:57 -Yes.
4:58 Laughter] In the moment when you say when "we," collaborators?
5:02 do you have, like, other writers,
5:04 producers you've been working with on the album?
5:06 -Yeah, Jesse and Matthias and Monica and Chandler.
5:10 There were so many different writers.
5:12 Jen Aniston was like the main producer,
5:15 and she got us like all in a house and it was like a sleepover.
5:18 She put my bra in the freezer.
5:19 There was 400 people that— People don't know— When you're hearing a song,
5:23 there's 400 people that they're grinding, coming up with lyrics.
5:26 They're coming up with, let's do that, you know?
5:28 And they're putting gangs on it.
5:29 -So you had 400 people and you still rhymed restaurant with restaurant?
5:33 -Yeah, because there was a couple other ideas.
5:36 Restaurant, restaurant.
5:38 Like, there was a couple other ideas
5:39 going around Like restaurant— "Restauront" isn't a word.
5:42 So it was like— -Yeah, so you throw that one out.
5:44 Yeah, yeah, yeah.
5:46 -Yeah.
5:46 -There's a real nice message behind the song,
5:48 which is like— I think a lot of people might
5:50 assume that the prettiest girl in America might be a bitch,
5:53 and this song makes it very clear that you are not.
5:55 -It doesn't mean that I'm a bitch.
5:57 -Right.
5:57 It doesn't mean you're a bitch.
5:58 -I'm the prettiest girl in America.
6:00 That doesn't mean I'm a bitch.
6:01 -And I just thought that was— That really resonated with me.
6:05 A blouse-wearing man.
6:06 -I'm starting to think that you're making fun of me.
6:07 -I'm not making fun of you.
6:09 I love the song.
6:10 Crave the whole— What were you gonna do?
6:12 Laughter] Did you take— Was that going
6:14 to be like— Are we gonna— We're gonna duel?
6:16 -No, no.
6:17 -Were you gonna slap me with a glove?
6:19 -I wasn't gonna hit you.
6:19 And I didn't steal the outfit.
6:21 Laughter] It feels like you brought me on to make sure
6:25 I end up in jail by the end of the interview.
6:28 -No, I would never want— Can I ask you a couple more questions about the album?
6:31 -I'm just— Can I just say one thing?
6:32 -Yeah.
6:33 -I don't understand why there's so many questions.
6:36 I thought I was singing.
6:37 So when are we doing the song?
6:38 -Oh, you thought you were going to do a song tonight?
6:40 We don't even— -I didn't think I was doing one,
6:43 but when you have a music person,
6:45 then they do— and then they're doing music on the show.
6:47 -Yeah.
6:47 Well— -I'm not— I'm not— I won't be acting unless any role comes my way.
6:53 So right now, no acting.
6:55 And then if there's an offer, an audition, I'll get back into it.
7:01 -So you're done with acting unless you get offered an acting job?
7:04 -Yes.
7:04 Or audition.
7:05 I'm willing to tape.
7:06 -Okay.
7:07 Gotcha.
7:07 -But right now, no.
7:10 And then if I get some e-mail, then yes.
7:13 -Interesting.
7:14 -Anything.
7:15 -Can I ask about— And I think it speaks
7:17 to how iconic a moment you're having right now.
7:20 There was a Meg Stalter look-alike contest this weekend.
7:22 -So cute.
7:22 -And here it is.
7:24 And you were kind of posting about it online and how,
7:28 like, taken aback and how, like, flattered you were by it all.
7:31 -Yeah.
7:31 -But did you also— Were you in fact also the organizer?
7:35 -So I—[ Laughter] Well, wait, just— So, one second,
7:38 let me just— Guys— -Yeah, no, please take your time to explain.
7:41 -I feel the audience is sort of— So,
7:43 I loved when I saw this posted because it was my idea to do it.
7:50 And so yeah.
7:52 Did— Are you asking if I planned it?
7:54 I did, but there's so many more people that go into, like, also posting.
7:58 -So, like, were Chandler and Monica involved with this as well?
8:01 -I messaged 5 to 12 people to post for me.
8:05 So it looked like organic.
8:06 And I told them what to say, like say, "Oh, my gosh, like, is this real?
8:09 Is she coming?" I made them do that.
8:11 And then there was a couple strangers that did it.
8:13 -Wow.
8:14 -Yeah.
8:14 Mostly it was me and my team and there was 400 songwriters.
8:19 There's like— I have like 500 waiters that work at my house.
8:22 -Oh, my God.
8:24 And you're still turning a profit based on how much staff you employ?
8:27 -Yeah.
8:28 -What a time.
8:29 -We're charging people.
8:30 So we were charging these people.
8:32 There's like so many like— So every person you're seeing,
8:35 that was like a $50 ticket.
8:37 -Wow.
8:37 -Just to walk on the park ground.
8:41 -Are you allowed to do that?
8:42 -Yeah.
8:43 -Because it's not your park.
8:44 So are you allowed to really charge $50?
8:46 -How do you know it's not my park?
8:47 -I apologize.
8:48 Laughter] I'm ashamed at how often I'm jumping to conclusions.
8:52 Can we show the winner of the...
8:53 -Yes.
8:54 -Were you involved in the selection?
8:56 -I thought that— I kind of thought everyone would start screaming, "No, no, no!
9:01 Meg's here.
9:01 She should win.
9:02 She should win." -Wait.
9:03 You thought people would want you to win the look-alike?
9:07 Can you win?
9:08 -Well, damn.
9:09 I look the most like me, don't I?
9:11 I heard you were allowed to cuss.
9:13 So what the hell is that about?
9:15 Laughter] -Here's the winner.
9:17 -Yeah.
9:18 -It's a pug.
9:20 Laughter][ Applause] -So I was like— I was like, first of all,
9:28 a little bit offended that the crowd thought
9:30 that the dog looked the most like me.
9:32 I don't know if it's because I'm plus size.
9:35 I don't know, like, what exactly— It's the wig, I think.
9:39 -Yeah.
9:39 Yeah.
9:39 I mean, but I also thought that this dog was probably "boughten" by a breeder.
9:43 She was— The dog was "boughten" by a breeder.
9:45 -Yeah.
9:46 "Boughten.
9:47 Boughten." -Adopt.
9:48 Don't shop.
9:49 Right?
9:49 -Yeah.
9:50 Adopt.
9:50 Don't shop.
9:51 Get "boughten" by a breeder.
9:52 -If you're "boughten" by a breeder,
9:54 you damn shouldn't be able to enter a contest like this.
9:57 -Oh, so this is like a steroid situation where
9:59 this should have been eliminated based on drug testing.
10:01 -Shelter on— Shelter to home only...
10:03 -Yeah.
10:04 -...should have entered.
10:05 -Was that clear on, like, the rules ahead of time?
10:08 -I didn't know how many animals were going to enter.
10:10 -Yeah.
10:10 -You know what I mean?
10:12 -It seems like it was maybe very trying.
10:15 -Yeah.
10:15 I mean, it was kind of hard just to get everyone,
10:17 like, there and paid, like, before I start.
10:20 -Sure.
10:20 -To, like, cash out because we were doing
10:22 cash only and some people didn't have cash.
10:24 And then, like, I was like, "There's a dog here." -What a day.
10:28 So the album's coming out this summer.
10:30 -So the album's coming out this summer, yeah.
10:31 -"Crave." -So it's called "Crave." -And is
10:33 that—[ Cheers and applause] Is that um...
10:38 Is the album cash only or can you buy it with other forms of, uh, you know?
10:45 -So, the album's free.
10:48 -Oh!
10:48 -Yeah.
10:49 -That's fantastic.
10:49 -But the reason it is is because Paul Downs gave me the money to make it.
10:54 -Oh!
10:54 -And well, actually he gave me the money to not make it.
10:57 And then I took it and then made it.
10:59 So it's kind of like he's like,
11:01 "I'll pay you not to make the album." And then I took the money and ran.
11:04 -Wow!
11:04 -So then now it can be free.
11:05 -You're very good at business.
11:07 -Yeah, yeah.
11:08 -Congrats on the album and the song and congrats— -He didn't want me to sing.
11:11 -He didn't want you to sing?
11:12 -Because he— I think he wanted me to just sort
11:15 of like e was probably jealous because he wants to sing.
11:17 -Yeah.
11:17 Well, so that's how it goes.
11:19 I was just going to say congrats on the album.
11:21 Congrats on five years of "Hacks." And thank you so much for being here.
11:24 -Thank you for having me.
11:26 -Meg Stalter, everybody.
11:27 Cheers and applause] New episodes of "Hacks" premiere Thursdays on HBO Max.
11:31 We'll be right back with Caro Claire Burke.
