Almost too thin - Razer Blade 16
ShortCircuit
0:00 This is such a weird laptop box.
0:02 It's so thin.
0:03 Some might even say it's razor thin.
0:10 This is such an awkward intro.
0:12 I'm so sorry.
0:12 Okay.
0:13 Did you see that?
0:13 It has a giant THX X logo on the side of the box.
0:16 Holy cow.
0:17 It does have a has a giant THX logo.
0:19 Put the sound.
0:26 This is such a strange box for a laptop,
0:28 but I'm still excited to unbox the Razer Blade 16 baby.
0:32 This one is not quite the top config, but oh my goodness,
0:36 does it have a lot of power under the hood,
0:38 and it comes with a a very, very expensive price tag to match.
0:42 This might be the most expensive laptop I've ever held in my life.
0:45 I'm going to game on it.
0:47 This is a fun box.
0:48 Okay, Razer, get rid of this.
0:50 This is kind of cringe and creepy.
0:52 Welcome to the cult of Razer.
0:55 Let's take a look here.
0:56 We'll get this laptop out of the way in here.
1:00 There you go.
1:00 Our power brick, which How many wattage is it?
1:05 280 watts.
1:06 What's the connector on the other end, though?
1:08 It is.
1:10 Oh, I you know, for half a second,
1:11 I was like, how did they get 280 watts over USBC?
1:15 Well, they didn't cuz it's not USBC.
1:17 Like, for half a second there, I was fooled.
1:20 It's clearly some Razer proprietary cable,
1:23 but it's expected if you want to draw that much wattage.
1:26 So, and then obviously the C13, which is the other end of it,
1:31 but I don't care about this stuff.
1:37 I care about this.
1:42 It's really heavy.
1:44 But then when you look at the size of it,
1:47 you're like, "How did they pack that much weight in this thing?
1:53 Holy cow." When I read the specs of this laptop the first time,
1:58 I was like, "Oh, gaming laptop.
1:59 It's going to be huge.
2:00 Going to be bulky." I'm kind of impressed.
2:03 Man, the green logo still is definitely off-putting for a lot of people.
2:06 But you know what?
2:07 That Hey, we'll do that for now.
2:09 Okay.
2:10 Embrace the cult.
2:12 No, I'm not going to embrace the cult.
2:14 What else is in here?
2:15 We got some Razer propaganda.
2:17 And under the rest of the box, that's it.
2:20 I kind of teased you by saying when I first read the specs.
2:23 How about we go over them?
2:24 In here is the Intel Core Ultra 9 processor, the 386H version.
2:29 You can also get a Ryzen AI 9365 version,
2:33 depending on if you want to be an AMD boy or an Intel boy.
2:36 For us, we got the Intel version as well as a 5090.
2:40 But if you want to get the 5090 that is in here,
2:45 you have to go with the Intel skew.
2:47 The AMD skew only limits you to a 5060.
2:50 Oh, only a 5060.
2:52 I need my mobile 5090.
2:56 That is monstrous.
2:57 You can get it with up to 64 gigs of RAM as well.
2:59 In our config, we only got 32 gigs cuz let's face it,
3:03 ain't nobody want to pay more than that because of RAM prices.
3:06 And we have two terabyte of storage.
3:08 For the rest of the exterior of the laptop,
3:10 I know I kind of googled it how thin it was.
3:12 On the right side of our laptop,
3:13 we have our Thunderbolt 5 port, full-size SD card reader,
3:16 a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port, and an HDMI 2.1 port, as well as your Kensington lock.
3:23 And the thing with Thunderbolt 5 is you can get 80 Gbit per second.
3:26 That's really great if you were going to connect an external GPU, for example.
3:30 I don't expect you would because again, this one has the 5090.
3:33 And on our left side, we have another Thunderbolt port.
3:35 This one's just Thunderbolt 4.
3:37 We have another two USB 3.2 ports.
3:40 And oh, that's the power cable there.
3:42 That proprietary one that I thought was USBC.
3:44 And then a combo headphone audio jack there.
3:47 And on the back, nothing.
3:49 On the front, nothing.
3:50 But you know what is all over this device?
3:53 Holy crap.
3:54 I've had it in my hand for like four seconds.
3:59 Oh my gosh, that's brutal.
4:01 My hands are not even that sweaty today.
4:03 And I I I know I've said I'm a sweaty boy before in past,
4:06 you know, short circuits.
4:09 It should not be that bad.
4:11 That's pretty brutal.
4:12 You know what?
4:13 With how thin this laptop is, I wonder if it'll pass the Apple MacBook test.
4:17 For those who don't know what it is, one hand open.
4:26 That's pretty good.
4:28 Usually what can happen on these laptops is
4:30 you can see as you're pulling up the hinge, the bottom will lift up.
4:33 The only thing I struggled with was actually getting my finger like in there.
4:38 It's pretty It's pretty slick.
4:40 That's pretty nice.
4:41 I won't lie.
4:42 As for our keyboard, holy crap, that's a big trackpad.
4:46 What a big laptop.
4:48 It's just kind of hitting me the scale of this laptop.
4:51 And I think it was when I noticed the size of the trackpad.
4:53 Oo, look at that RGB, baby.
4:56 Back lit keyboard.
4:57 That is a very bright backlight as well.
4:59 Holy cow, this screen looks great.
5:04 Wow.
5:05 I obviously not the greatest with anti-glare as you can see, but again,
5:08 I know I'm in a studio with giant lights at it,
5:11 but it is very, very nice with this background.
5:16 I really like this display already.
5:18 I mean, I haven't seen any content yet.
5:19 Maybe I'll hold my thoughts.
5:20 I'll hold my thoughts.
5:21 Okay, it is 2560 by600, 240 hertz, which my monitor at home is like 120.
5:30 I I don't know how laptops keep getting like faster and faster herz.
5:34 My monitor at home just trucking along at 120, baby.
5:37 I don't know if you'll even get the full use of the 240 Hz.
5:41 I know I mentioned that the GPU in this is a 5090,
5:43 but one thing that a lot of people
5:44 don't know about laptops is there's actually different,
5:48 you know, 5090s and different 5080s.
5:50 It depends on what the board is drawing in terms of power.
5:54 For example, in our tests that are coming up, we compared it to an Omen laptop.
5:59 That 5090 can reach 175 watts, whereas this Razer Blade 16 reaches 165.
6:07 Now, you might be thinking, well,
6:08 can't I just unlock it to 175 or can't I change them or whatever?
6:12 Not really with how Nvidia does their mobile GPUs.
6:15 So, while it is a 5090, it's not the best mobile 5090.
6:20 And I guess we'll see how that actually plays into some of our results later.
6:24 But, I want to do some tests of typing.
6:26 I want to get into some audio tests.
6:28 And I also want to get into this message from our sponsor.
6:31 You can't keep a whole laptop or hard drive in your pocket all the time.
6:34 That's ridiculous.
6:35 But you can use UG Green NAS like the DXP 4800 Pro.
6:39 It's basically like having your own personal cloud,
6:41 so you can access all of your photos, videos, and documents on the go safely
6:44 and cheaper than paying for cloud storage, too.
6:47 It supports up to 144 tab of storage,
6:50 which is approximately 50 million photos of my cat,
6:53 which is the perfect number of cat photos.
6:55 Grab your UG DXP 4800 Pro using our link below.
6:59 Like I said earlier, this thing's heavy.
7:00 I want to do a quick bend test.
7:02 if I break this before we actually get into gaming.
7:04 But that's that's why they call them short circuits.
7:07 That's shortest short circuit.
7:09 Oh, you know what?
7:14 For being how thin it is, I think it is understandable that it bends that much.
7:20 It still makes me uncomfortable.
7:21 Uh the actual chassis itself though, like the rest of it.
7:25 Oh, I can hear it creaking.
7:28 But it is Try to get it lined up here and I'll try to twist it.
7:32 It's pretty good.
7:34 It's pretty I'm giving it pretty good beans there.
7:37 And it's got some good rigidity.
7:38 I wonder how that translates into typing, though.
7:43 Oh, I love this keyboard.
7:46 Oh, this might be one of the best laptop keyboards I've typed on.
7:52 It is a membrane.
7:53 I'm reading my notes here on it.
7:54 Sorry.
7:55 1.5 millimeters of travel membrane keyboard.
7:58 I got a little bit of deck flex.
8:02 You can definitely see,
8:02 but I'm also like all eight fingers giving her pretty good.
8:07 If I'm just typing, you can't really see any.
8:11 I I don't know why.
8:12 Maybe it's cuz the meme of Razer and how like hardcores hate Razer.
8:16 You kind of go into these videos kind of skeptical.
8:18 I think this might be my favorite keyboard I've ever typed on a laptop.
8:21 I'm very impressed.
8:23 Razer, I do want to play with the trackpad a bit more.
8:26 Trackpad not the smoothest to glide over.
8:28 The click is very satisfying.
8:30 I can tell when I'm clicking though.
8:31 It's definitely a bottom left and bottom right click on this.
8:34 Are my gestures going to work?
8:35 Yeah, it seems like my gestures are going to work.
8:37 So, if I want to go multi- desktop or anything,
8:38 I like how big of a trackpad it is.
8:41 As long as palm rejection does a pretty good job,
8:43 which I'm seeing some movement in my cursor when I just
8:48 am kind of like moving my hand along the keyboard here.
8:51 I've seen better palm rejection, I will say.
8:54 You notice that when I'm typing, look at the screen.
8:59 It's got it's it's subtle, but it is it's wobbling.
9:04 That could be just because of the table.
9:06 I'm not going to give full blame to Razer on that.
9:08 I do want to listen to some audio,
9:09 and I do want to watch some video on this thing, though.
9:11 This screen looks really nice.
9:13 The laptop has six speakers total, four upfiring and two downfiring.
9:18 And hey, that THX, this better sound freaking amazing.
9:23 I've got a little board underneath here so
9:24 it's not directly firing into our deskpad from ltstore.com.
9:28 All right.
9:28 You know me, I like to do 100% volume first.
9:31 Here we go.
9:38 It's not as loud as I thought it was going to be.
9:43 It's not as loud as I expected it to be at 100%.
9:46 But what I will say is it sounds really good.
9:50 Um, the only thing I noticed a little
9:51 bit weird was the snare just before the drop,
9:55 but that was probably a personal preference for me that the Lenovo,
10:00 for example, had way worse on the snare.
10:02 Um, the MacBook had way worse on the bass, right?
10:05 This has a very nice balance across the entire mix.
10:09 I'm going to turn it down to 50% though,
10:11 and we'll see kind of what that sounds like.
10:17 Did that turn down?
10:18 That sounds almost the exact same volume.
10:21 I'm at 50% now.
10:23 100%.
10:33 I almost feel like my volume is on a curve.
10:36 I don't think my volume is linear on this.
10:38 It's almost like it's curve like that.
10:40 Yeah.
10:40 Sorry.
10:40 Curve the other way.
10:41 Yes.
10:42 Not not this way.
10:43 because the 50% did not sound half as loud as the 100%.
10:49 So, keep that in mind.
10:50 I guess it still sounds very good.
10:52 These speakers sound awesome on a laptop,
10:56 especially again, man, for something this freaking thin, dude.
11:01 Holy cow.
11:02 The fan grills one and two here.
11:04 I kind of just picked it up with one hand and one of my hands happened to land
11:07 on the fan grill and all of the weight went
11:10 through this mesh and I could actually rub the fan.
11:13 Uh, now it's not going, but I don't know if the fan's not spinning because
11:16 I broke it or if it's just not hot enough.
11:19 We'll see you when we game.
11:20 We'll see you when we game or open it up later.
11:22 That is not good.
11:24 Uh, yeah, that I didn't like.
11:26 I don't think I've ever encountered that on a laptop before.
11:29 All righty.
11:30 I've got my Cyberpunk here.
11:32 It's time to play 16.
11:35 I had a stroke.
11:37 So, we're on 1600 resolution here.
11:39 We're on ultra settings and we got no rate tracing,
11:43 no upscaling or anything like that.
11:45 And I've got a 100 FPS average as I'm just driving
11:48 through the back desert here with my 1% lows being almost 100.
11:53 It dipped to 90 there, but that's rock solid.
11:56 That means I'm not going to notice any weird hitching, right?
11:59 Sometimes having a high average FPS isn't the best.
12:02 If your 1% lows dip to 30, 60, or whatever it may be,
12:05 that's when you notice like the oh my gosh, a stutter.
12:08 Having it very tight between your average and your 1% lows is that's nice.
12:16 What's not nice?
12:17 Do you hear those fans?
12:18 Can you hear them on the mic?
12:19 Holy crap.
12:26 That's the THX.
12:28 That's where they get it from.
12:29 Okay, this is hot to the touch.
12:35 Like I could not comfortably hold my finger
12:39 on this spot right here for more than 5 seconds.
12:44 Like I I would feel very uncomfortable.
12:47 Actually, this whole top bar I would not feel comfortable.
12:51 I mean that makes sense.
12:52 That's where the exhaust is.
12:53 That's where everything's coming out.
12:54 But like I'm kind of surprised that passed certification.
13:00 It's pretty hot.
13:01 For those who don't know when manufacturers are making devices there are
13:05 certain things that they have to pass in terms of you know
13:08 em what is it emf radiation or like whatever and then there's
13:11 also temperature so the surface
13:13 of these devices cannot actually exceed a certain
13:16 temperature because if you were to hold it or put it
13:19 on your lap being a laptop it could actually burn you and I'd
13:22 be very shocked if somehow this passed certification it's like uncomfortable
13:27 to touch too hot razor genuinely And now that the fans are spinning,
13:34 I'm going to see if I can recreate this again if I pick it up with one hand.
13:36 Ready?
13:37 Yeah.
13:38 Do you hear that?
13:41 I can touch the fan on both sides.
13:46 Not great for how rigid everything else felt.
13:49 I'm surprised that that's an oversight cuz I
13:51 often pick up my laptop with one hand.
13:53 I hope I'm not the only one.
13:55 All right, let me power this thing down.
13:57 Let's open it up and let's talk about some of the performance results.
14:02 Non-captive screws.
14:03 That's fine.
14:04 Whatever.
14:04 At least the screws are relatively easy to access.
14:07 As for the performance of this laptop,
14:08 we compared it to a very similarly spec HP Omen laptop
14:12 with the difference being that that 5090 on the HP Omen draws 175 watts.
14:17 And as you can see, it basically results
14:20 in the HP Omen being just slightly better.
14:23 The only difference was in 1200p, the Razer laptop outperformed in Cyberpunk.
14:29 That makes sense because at that lower resolution,
14:31 you're probably more CPU bottleneck than you would be GPU bottlenecked.
14:35 But even though it's drawing less wattage,
14:38 it's well within what we would expect the performance of a mobile 5090 to be.
14:42 I will say the biggest difference between the HP Omen and the Razer
14:45 was that there was a bigger difference between your average and your 1% lows.
14:50 Kind of like I pointed out when I was actually gaming in Cyberpunk there.
14:55 But all my screws are out.
14:57 I think it Yeah, the fan base broke.
15:01 Wait, is this just a slide off?
15:03 Wow, that was really easy.
15:05 I will give Razer credit.
15:07 There's no clips holding it in.
15:09 That was actually just a simple pop off after I got all my screws out.
15:13 Very nice, Razer.
15:14 I like to see it cuz that'll make upgrading things like
15:18 your storage easier or your Wi-Fi card easier or adding a secondary drive.
15:23 You can fit up to 8 terabytes total in this if you put two 4 TB drives in.
15:28 Other than that, it's kind of kind of empty.
15:30 The whole vapor chamber is under here.
15:32 Even this is still warm after it's been off for a couple minutes now.
15:36 And our battery here, where's our size?
15:40 90Wh hour battery.
15:41 That is a chonker.
15:45 Wait, normal.
15:47 Sorry, I see typical capacity and normal energy.
15:52 What's the difference?
15:53 Yeah.
15:53 So, it's funny cuz when I did the battery report as well,
15:56 the the power CFG battery report, it also reports 85 uh watt hours.
16:01 So, but Razer's website says 90.
16:04 M look, it might have gotten less performance in our games, but holy cow,
16:09 even though there was only a 2Wh hour difference between this and that HP Omen,
16:14 this battery lasted more than 6 hours longer.
16:18 It got almost 10 and 1/2 hours compared to 4 and 1/2 on the HP Omen.
16:25 Man, Panther Lake is awesome, isn't it?
16:27 As for getting fully charged,
16:28 our Razer Blade took just over a 100 minutes to get fully charged.
16:32 HP Omen took about 120.
16:34 And Razer claims on their website that you can
16:35 go from 0 to 80% in about 45 minutes.
16:38 We were not able to test that claim,
16:41 but hey, quick charge times always appreciated.
16:44 And long battery life also always appreciated.
16:47 I kind of glossed over it though, but you could swap out your Wi-Fi card.
16:50 Probably won't need to.
16:51 It's Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.
16:53 I think this is one of the first laptops I've opened that had Bluetooth 6.
16:56 Most of them are on 5.4 or 5.2.
16:58 And other than that, that's the Razer Blade laptop.
17:02 But how much does it cost?
17:06 This is where uh this is where it's probably going
17:09 to be a turnoff the video for a lot of you.
17:11 It's $4500.
17:15 Man, this is where I get conflicted, right?
17:18 Because obviously that is an insane amount of money and I should be angry.
17:22 Ah, it's a lot of money.
17:24 You're getting a lot of laptop for that money.
17:26 You're getting a 5090.
17:27 You're getting incredible battery life because you got the Panther Lake.
17:30 I mean, a lot of that price could come from just crazy DRAM prices right now.
17:33 You know, SSDs are expensive.
17:35 RAM is really expensive,
17:36 which you'll notice now that I'm in it, RAM is not upgradeable.
17:40 And that's because in order to hit
17:41 the insane speed of 9600 megat transfers per second, needs to be soldered.
17:48 And this is where I get torn again.
17:49 We're now getting incredible RAM speeds.
17:52 Like 9600 mega transfers per second is unbelievable.
17:55 But we're compromising upgradability or repairability
17:58 in order to hit those speeds.
17:59 This isn't the first time we've seen it, right?
18:01 I don't know.
18:01 I'd be curious to know what you guys would prefer.
18:03 Do you guys like the crazy high speeds and performance of it,
18:06 or do you think it's worth the lower speed in order to be able to swap it out?
18:10 I guess for you, it's going to depend
18:12 on what you want out of the Razer Blade 16.
18:14 I think the top spec is $5,000 right now,
18:17 and the entry point is around the $2,000 mark.
18:21 $2,000 is still a lot of money for a laptop,
18:22 by the you can get a MacBook at that price.
18:24 And depending on what you're doing it
18:26 for, that could probably be better for you.
18:29 But I'd be curious to know what you guys think.
18:31 And honestly, what do you guys think about how thin this is?
18:34 It's nice that we're getting Windows laptops this thin.
18:36 If you guys are interested in super thin laptop designs
18:38 like this, go check out Adam's video on the ZenBook 16.
18:42 It's kind of similar in terms of its thinness.
18:44 And well, I didn't watch the video yet,
18:46 so I can't actually tell you how the video went.
18:47 So, hey 16.
18:49 WHAT THE DID I SAY?
18:52 16.
