Why Are You Learning English? ๐ค
Learn English with Bob the Canadian
0:00 So if you've been watching my channel for a while now,
0:03 you'll know that I'm a very curious person.
0:05 I'm always wondering about things,
0:06 and today I'm wondering about why are you learning English?
0:10 I'm just curious.
0:11 This channel is usually about me talking to you, and it's not very often that I
0:16 hear from you about your English learning journey.
0:18 So I'm very curious about why you are learning English.
0:22 So in this lesson, there's two things that we're going to do.
0:25 Number one, I would love it if in the comments below
0:28 the you could post in the comments why you are learning English.
0:32 Think about it for a little bit.
0:34 Write me a sentence and tell me why you're learning this crazy
0:37 language that I speak naturally and for some reason you want to learn.
0:40 And then the second thing I want to do
0:42 in this video is I'm going to teach you a bunch
0:45 of different example sentences that you can use if
0:48 you're having trouble expressing the reason why you're learning English.
0:51 So, two things.
0:52 You leave a comment, you tell me why you're learning English,
0:55 and I will teach you exactly how to say it.
0:58 So you might want to do this in the opposite direction.
1:01 You might want to watch the rest of the lesson first,
1:03 find the English example sentence that works best for you
1:06 and use that as a model to write your comment.
1:10 Okay, here we go.
1:11 Example sentence number one.
1:13 I'm learning English because I want to talk to people from other countries.
1:17 One of the reasons sometimes people learn a language is because they
1:20 want to talk to people who live in other parts of the world.
1:23 For me, one of the reasons I learned French is because
1:26 I find it very interesting to talk to people from France,
1:30 also from the province of Quebec.
1:31 But that's not a different country.
1:33 That's just part of Canada.
1:34 So one of the reasons you might be learning English.
1:37 I want to talk to people from other countries.
1:40 Example sentence number two.
1:42 I'm learning English because I want a better job.
1:45 Maybe you work in a field where learning English
1:47 and speaking the English language is a huge benefit,
1:50 and it might mean you can get a promotion,
1:52 or it might mean you can get a different job entirely.
1:55 This is often true if you're a teacher or if you're an engineer,
1:58 or if you're someone who works in the medical field.
2:01 If you can learn English,
2:02 you can get a better job or you can get a promotion at your existing job.
2:06 So example sentence number two.
2:08 I'm learning English because I want a better job.
2:12 Example sentence number three.
2:14 I'm learning English as a hobby.
2:16 A hobby is something that you do in your spare time.
2:19 It's something you do after work.
2:20 Or maybe it's something you do in retirement.
2:22 It's something you do for fun, it gives you enjoyment,
2:25 and it really makes your day better.
2:28 So maybe learning English for you is something really fun.
2:31 Maybe it's like a gigantic puzzle.
2:33 As you learn the language, you're fitting all the pieces together.
2:36 So, example sentence number three.
2:38 I'm learning English as a hobby.
2:41 Example sentence number four.
2:43 I'm learning English because I want to study at a university.
2:46 This is a very common reason to learn the English language.
2:50 Maybe you want to go to an English speaking country
2:52 and you want to go to university in that country.
2:55 So you'll learn English so when you go there,
2:58 you can learn something at university,
3:00 but also continue to improve your English while you're there.
3:03 Example sentence number five.
3:05 I'm learning English because I want to use the Internet more.
3:08 The Internet is filled with all kinds of information
3:11 and there's so many things to watch as entertainment,
3:14 but a lot of it is in English.
3:16 Now, I will admit AI translation
3:18 and translation software is getting a lot better.
3:20 But sometimes it is nicer to watch things in the original language.
3:25 Sometimes it's nicer to read and understand the English webpage
3:28 because it makes you feel good because you accomplished something.
3:31 So reason number five,
3:32 I'm learning English because I want to use the Internet more.
3:36 Example sentence number six.
3:38 I'm learning English because I want to travel.
3:40 This is probably one of the most exciting reasons to learn English.
3:44 Maybe you're going to visit England or Canada or the United States or Australia
3:47 or one of the many countries in the world where they speak English.
3:51 This would certainly be the sentence you
3:53 would use to describe why you're learning English.
3:55 When you go there, you can speak to people in the English
3:58 language and enjoy your vacation and improve your English while you're there.
4:02 So example sentence number six.
4:04 I'm learning English because I want to travel.
4:07 Example sentence number seven.
4:09 I'm learning English to understand movies, TV shows and songs.
4:13 If you think about all of the movies in the world,
4:15 a lot of them come from the United States.
4:18 If you think about all the TV shows in the world,
4:20 a lot of them come from English speaking countries.
4:23 And certainly if you think about music,
4:25 there is a lot of music in the world that is in English.
4:28 And maybe you enjoy movies and you enjoy English TV shows
4:31 and you enjoy music from Canada and you want to understand it better.
4:35 That's the sentence you would use you would say,
4:37 I'm learning English to understand movies, TV shows and songs.
4:42 Example sentence number eight.
4:44 I'm learning English because I want to make new friends.
4:47 If you are an online gamer, if you play online games,
4:50 you will meet people from around the world
4:52 and maybe you want to speak English to them.
4:55 If you are someone who watches live streams,
4:57 you might participate in English conversations
5:00 in the chat and eventually make new friends.
5:03 So your reason for learning English is a very social reason.
5:06 It's because you would like to meet people and perhaps become their friend.
5:09 So, example sentence number eight.
5:11 I'm learning English to make new friends.
5:14 Example sentence number nine.
5:15 I'm learning English to improve my brain.
5:18 It has been proven that learning another language is really good for your brain.
5:23 It's a really good activity.
5:25 It's very similar to playing video games or doing
5:28 puzzles or even solving math problems just for fun.
5:32 Is that a thing?
5:32 I think some people do that.
5:34 When you exercise your brain, your brain stays healthier.
5:37 So, example sentence number nine.
5:39 I'm learning English to improve my brain.
5:42 Example sentence number 10.
5:45 I'm learning English to read the news, to watch the news, to listen to the news.
5:49 There are so many things happening in the world,
5:51 and sometimes the news source is only in English.
5:54 And maybe you're someone who really likes
5:56 to follow the news from around the world.
5:59 You would naturally need to learn English
6:01 to understand some of the things you're reading, watching, or listening to.
6:04 So, example sentence number 10.
6:06 I'm learning English to read the news,
6:08 to watch the news, or to listen to the news.
