The Dry Well Effect
Ali Abdaal
0:00 All right, we've got a question here.
0:01 How do you know when it's time to move
0:03 on from a job and find or start something else?
0:05 Is it based on happiness, energy levels, money, vibes?
0:07 Okay.
0:07 How do you know when it's time to move on from from a job?
0:09 If you are even asking the question,
0:11 then you know it's time to at least start testing the waters.
0:14 Imagine your job is kind of like a well, a well and it's got some water in it.
0:18 And the fact that you're asking,
0:19 "How do I know when it's time to move on from my job?"
0:21 You can sense that that well is starting to run dry.
0:23 In terms of anything, learning, career progression,
0:25 finances, vibes, money, it doesn't really matter.
0:28 Like for you, the fact you've asked the question
0:29 means that you know the well is running dry.
0:30 You don't quit the job immediately because you probably need money.
0:33 And so you just on the side you start digging another well.
0:36 You start like browsing for what else could be your next thing.
0:39 Do you want to work for yourself or do you want to work for someone else?
0:42 Like the only two ways to make money in this world.
0:44 If you want to work for yourself,
0:44 you start exploring businesses that you might be able to start on the side
0:47 in the evenings and weekends and stuff while you maintain your job.
0:50 If you want to work for someone else, you start maybe, you know,
0:52 having some coffees with people who are in jobs that you think is cool.
0:54 You might be like exploring like local job opportunities in the local area.
0:57 all that kind of stuff.
0:57 And you do that while you have a job.
