Katie Porter clashes with Tom Steyer over California wealth tax | RISING
The Hill
0:05 I'm confused.
0:06 Do you support the billionaire's tax that is going
0:09 to [clears throat] be on the ballot in November?
0:12 Yes or no?
0:13 Katie, I just said I will vote for it if it's on the ballot in November.
0:21 So, and so what I've said is just go far enough.
0:25 Now, Katie Porter and Tommy Styer sparring off in the California
0:28 governor's debate over the proposed 5% wealth tax on billionaires.
0:32 Porter has said she's against that proposal,
0:35 which could be approved by voters this November.
0:37 But Styer, who is a billionaire himself,
0:39 said that he thinks the tax doesn't go far enough,
0:42 adding, quote, "Billionaires like me should pay more taxes."
0:45 Tuesday was the latest California gubernatorial debate.
0:48 With less than a month to go until the state's nonpartisan primary,
0:51 seven candidates qualified for the debate, five Democrats and two Republicans.
0:55 Recent polls are showing a tight race.
0:57 A poll from Yugob shows Tommy Styer
0:59 and Republican candidate Steve Hilton as the top two,
1:02 but no candidates managed to pull ahead with a substantial uh lead.
1:06 Um, I think as far as name recognition,
1:09 Katie Katie Porter and Tom Styer are up there, but for the wrong reasons,
1:13 like a billionaire trying to represent California and Katie Porter because uh,
1:17 bad behavior.
1:18 And I I make fun of Katie Porter a lot, and we're going to get into a little bit
1:21 more of that because But this is the quintessential.
1:24 I find her on a personality base very bad,
1:29 but because I'm ultimately not about personality, but
1:34 she is.
1:34 I again, I think she's bad.
1:36 I I don't like her on a personality base.
1:38 She is far less insane than Tommy Styer.
1:42 And if I was for I wouldn't support either one of them,
1:44 but if I was forced to pick between the two, I would pick her over Tommy Styer.
1:49 Tommy Styer is a crazy person.
1:51 And the idea of him becoming governor is insane.
1:54 Like run, flee, flee for your lives.
1:57 Get out of California.
1:58 I don't I don't understand his I don't agree.
2:00 I think he can't say
2:02 he cannot say that he want disagrees with the billionaire tax because
2:05 it probably looks bad to even have a billionaire in the race.
2:08 He is a billionaire.
2:09 But I think I know that's what I'm saying.
2:10 He can't be the one to say it,
2:11 but most people even the working class disagree with this tax because they've
2:16 tried it in the past a few years ago and it didn't pass.
2:18 So just he can just figure out a way for messaging.
2:21 I mean he spent millions of dollars.
2:22 You'll probably love him.
2:23 I just saw him calling for a halt to uh autonomous uh truck driving.
2:28 Oh get him in office.
2:29 Oh my god.
2:30 Get him in office.
2:31 So you want people to die?
2:33 What?
2:33 That's They've had all these truck driving incidents because
2:36 illegal immigrants are driving them and crashing into everybody.
2:38 So instead of that, we'll just have computers drive them which have
2:41 no accidents and people be safer and he wants to stop that.
2:45 So you want to end up on train tracks with no driver.
2:47 It's safer.
2:48 Do you want to run this?
2:49 Do you want to end up on train tracks, no driver?
2:52 No.
2:52 I don't want to be run over by an illegal immigrant either.
2:54 Okay.
2:54 Both these things have happened.
2:55 Train tracks with no driver.
2:57 Illegal immigrants driving.
2:58 They need regulation.
3:00 Strike me dead.
3:01 Like things can happen,
3:02 but we've run the studies and it's safer to do it this way.
3:06 Okay.
3:06 These autonomous vehicles have also picked up children.
3:09 They're not supposed to do that.
3:10 I How do we get into this conversation?
3:11 Let's stick to the script.
3:12 Katie Porter also recently released a new campaign ad,
3:15 poking fun at a video that went viral last year where
3:17 the former congresswoman can be seen yelling at a staffer to quote,
3:20 "Get out of my shot." Here's some of that ad.
3:23 To give Californians what they need,
3:25 it's going to take standing up to Donald Trump,
3:28 calling out greedy corporations, and stepping on some toes along the way.
3:32 Now, could you guys please get out of my shot?
3:37 Yeah, I saw people dunking on her for this.
3:40 I thought it was very cringe.
3:42 I actually didn't think it was
3:44 so terrible to acknowledge the really embarrassing.
3:47 Look, she's a she's a mean person.
3:49 She comes across as a mean person and again that's bad.
3:54 I don't think she should be the governor but I
3:56 really don't think Tom Styer should be the governor.
3:58 So I don't I don't think it was that bad.
3:59 I think you have to make light of it and do
4:01 something because the way that she's been treating people is not appropriate.
4:04 And I do like to start with moral character and then go from there.
4:08 Okay.
4:08 I know we disagree with that.
