My friends and I found an ID and tried to use it at a bar where that person worked.

0:00 Hello.
0:00 Hello, can you hear me?
0:02 Yes, is it Lea or Lee?
0:03 Lee.
0:04 You just never know with these spellings.
0:07 That's tough.
0:08 I was excited for you guys to guess.
0:10 I get Lea a lot, I get Lay a lot.
0:12 Lay is inappropriate, but Lea and Lee, that's tricky.
0:19 How do you spell Lea, Leia, Lay, Lea, Lea, no, Lea.
0:24 How do you spell Lea?
0:25 L E A H usually.
0:27 Where are you at, Lee?
0:28 I am just a stone's throw away
0:30 from some of your many references in Northville, Michigan.
0:33 Oh, I know Northville inside and out.
0:36 Do you cruise Hines Park?
0:38 Of course, I'm like a mile away.
0:40 Wonderful.
0:40 Yes, we would go cruising in Hines Park quite a bit.
0:44 My very good friend went to Novi High.
0:46 My husband went to Novi High.
0:49 Wow.
0:49 And then we would cruise downtown Northville.
0:51 That's the story, Monica, that I met the girl when I was lying about
0:54 my age and she tooted when we were hooking up.
0:57 Remember that famous story?
0:59 I know.
1:00 That's all from Northville.
1:01 Bringing back all the memories.
1:04 [laughter] Lee, did you grow up in Northville?
1:06 I grew up in Northville and I met
1:08 my husband at Michigan State where the story takes place.
1:12 And then we moved all around.
1:13 I was by Wabi Wab in Chicago,
1:15 down in Dallas, and now back in good old Northville.
1:18 No stints in Atlanta?
1:20 What do you have against Atlanta?
1:22 You know, I worked for United Airlines, so they're very Delta country.
1:25 So, it's maybe my only rivalry there.
1:28 Do you still work for them or no, you don't?
1:30 Now I'm a stay-at-home mom and a personal trainer.
1:32 Okay.
1:32 Oh, nice.
1:33 Oh, I have gains.
1:34 Monica's worked out 1.2 times, 1.1 times.
1:38 muscles are huge.
1:40 [laughter]
1:40 I'm sorry to scare you.
1:41 How often are you working out?
1:43 We're so off track, but I'm curious.
1:45 Probably five to six times a week.
1:47 There we go.
1:48 Always a rest day, sometimes two.
1:50 How about five or six days rest days?
1:52 And I like the six-day workout.
1:54 Okay.
1:55 Yeah, sometimes seven on accident.
1:56 Let's hear our story.
1:58 Okay.
1:58 So, as we were from Michigan State,
2:00 sort of known as a party school, which is where the story takes place.
2:04 This is January 2014,
2:06 which would make me a 18-year-old freshman at Michigan State.
2:11 We are back for second semester and I was on a sports team at MSU.
2:17 And I actually want you guys to guess what team you think I was on.
2:20 I think you're a soccer player.
2:22 Uh lacrosse.
2:23 We're going to go lacrosse cuz my husband was lacrosse.
2:26 So, I'm going to keep that part anonymous, but I like lacrosse.
2:28 Okay, so neither.
2:29 Neither.
2:29 Because I'm on the lacrosse team,
2:32 there are girls who are a lot older that I've become friends with over
2:35 summer trainings and we kind of have this big age group of friends.
2:39 All the girls who are 21 obviously are going
2:41 to the bars on Friday night and that gave
2:43 a big incentive to the younger girls to find a way to also go to the bars.
2:47 So, there are two ways at the time it felt like you could get a fake ID.
2:51 First one is the one I opted for, which
2:54 was to take some sort of very sketchy passport-like photo
2:58 to send to who knows what country via whatever boy
3:01 on the dorm floor was willing to take on this endeavor.
3:05 Get all of those fake IDs back in like a necklace box from again,
3:09 who knows what country and who knows when
3:11 and he would kind of go and pass them out.
3:12 Terrible, very clearly fake from Connecticut.
3:15 Not great, but worked at the bars you knew it would work out.
3:17 The more ideal way to get the ID was a cousin that turned 21,
3:22 pretends they lose theirs,
3:24 you look enough like them, you use a real Michigan driver's license,
3:27 you know, more of a sure fire.
3:29 Yeah.
3:30 ID was always preferred.
3:31 I didn't get to have that obviously cuz nobody looked like me.
3:34 One time I used Callie's ID, we've talked about that.
3:36 Anyway, go on.
3:40 [laughter] So, I've got my fake ID.
3:40 I'm 18, feeling good,
3:42 getting into the bars I know I can get into with my older teammates,
3:45 but uh some of the other girls in my grade were still looking for an ID.
3:49 Well, turns out, feels like fate,
3:51 one of the older girls on the team is at a party and sticks her hand
3:55 down cuz she drops her phone in the couch
3:57 cushion and pulls out a driver's license.
3:59 Oh, bingo.
4:00 For someone we don't know, but immediately she looks at it,
4:04 blonde, blue eye, could have been any one of our teammates.
4:07 So, she holds onto this morsel and she decides
4:10 that she is going to night one of my best friends,
4:13 another freshman, Janine, with this fake ID.
4:16 Now, Janine is about 5'1, 5'2, cute as a button and this ID does say 5'10.
4:22 Uh-oh.
4:22 Other than that, we're going to roll with it.
4:38 [music] So, Friday night comes around, January, it's freezing cold.
4:43 Monica, as you know, the best part of going out is the getting ready.
4:46 We're getting ready in the dorms,
4:48 skater skirts, peplum tops, big chunky Charlie's necklace.
4:52 We're ready to go.
4:53 We're hyping each other up.
4:54 Janine parts her hair the way that Haley, the fake ID name, has her hair parted.
5:00 She wears it straight, which she never does.
5:02 We're trying to make Janine Haley.
5:03 She is living the role.
5:05 We get to the bar and this is the bar on campus, okay?
5:08 Rick's American Cafe for all my fellow Spartans.
5:12 I got to ask my sister about this.
5:13 My sister's a MSU graduate.
5:15 She will know.
5:16 It is a basement bar as all good college bars are and the way it's set up is
5:20 you kind of can see the front door
5:22 and that's it because you immediately go down the steps.
5:26 So, the line goes out and around the corner and you have
5:28 to wait outside until you get to the bouncer and go in.
5:31 So, we've got our group of all my teammates and we are strategizing here.
5:35 We've got someone who's 21 with a real ID first, then me,
5:39 then someone else who's 21, you know, we're intermingling the fakes.
5:42 We think this is going to help us.
5:43 I cosign on this.
5:44 Thank you, I appreciate that.
5:45 We're there and we are strategizing and while we're in line, we're all studying.
5:50 Everyone who's underage is studying their info, right?
5:52 Address, what's your date of birth, what's your full name,
5:55 what's your middle name, what's your hometown, all the things.
5:57 And Janine is locked in as Haley, she's ready to go.
6:00 And we decide because she this is her first time using fake,
6:03 she's going to go very last because the rumor
6:06 is kind of like if you're cool with the bouncer, even if he turns you away,
6:10 usually they'll give you your ID back and just say,
6:12 "I know this is fake, skurry off." She's like,
6:14 "I'll just go back to the dorms if I don't get in." So,
6:16 we get up to the bouncer.
6:17 Somebody goes, they get in.
6:19 I go, I get in.
6:20 Next person goes in and then we look at Janine and we're all kind
6:23 of trying to like creep down the steps so that we can hear what's happening.
6:28 Sweetie Petey, little farm town.
6:31 She's been peer pressured into using a fake ID really is what's happening here.
6:34 She hands over the ID and immediately the bouncer looks at it, smirks, and goes,
6:39 "How do you know Haley?"[ __] Yeah, see, this is the risk you run.
6:45 The bouncer knows Haley.
6:47 We're on a campus of 50,000 just undergrad,
6:50 but Janine is fast on her feet and immediately,
6:52 instead of trying to be the I am Haley, which is what I would have done.
6:55 I would have doubled down, panicked, gone with it.
6:57 Immediately doesn't miss a beat, goes, "We're really good friends,
7:01 like all my friends just got in.
7:02 Can you just give me the ID back?" And she
7:04 was just I think trying to get the ID back.
7:06 I don't even know if she wanted to get down the steps,
7:08 but he kind of like rolls his eyes, gives it to her and lets her down.
7:12 Yes.
7:12 [screaming] Good job.
7:15 reveal her at the end, she's too cute to let her go home.
7:18 So, Janine gets down the steps and we are celebrating
7:21 like it is Super Bowl Sunday and we have won.
7:24 We are Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce high-fiving.
7:27 This is the greatest thing that's happened to our freshman selves.
7:30 The bar is split because you go down the steps,
7:32 you go to the left side we called the dark side cuz that was the dance floor,
7:35 the booty bumping of it all.
7:37 And then the right side was the light side and that's
7:40 where you would go to like watch the game, order a drink.
7:42 It's a big oval, so you can walk kind of all the way around.
7:45 So, we're into the bar, we are there for probably 45 minutes,
7:49 just enough to get a couple vodka crans in us.
7:51 Oh, yeah, that was my drink, too.
7:54 Oh, yeah, it's every 18-year-old's drink at MSU, I order.
7:57 My 18-year-old drink was amaretto sour.
8:00 Oh.
8:01 That's what we would all get and then I worked my way up to vodka cran.
8:04 I like that you're also always like it's a twofer,
8:07 you're getting drunk and then also kind of buffeting yourself from a UTI.
8:11 Exactly, you're being healthy.
8:12 It's the wellness choice.
8:14 We're having a good time, we're booty bumping.
8:16 Now, the manager of this bar,
8:18 we're going to call him Hank cuz I'm pretty sure he still
8:20 works there and I want to be in good graces as an alumna,
8:23 but he is exactly what you think of when you imagine a Midwestern bar manager,
8:28 like big, burly, he's wearing the Rick's East Lansing t-shirt.
8:31 Everybody kind of knows his face in East Lansing.
8:34 We spot him walking over to Janine.
8:37 So, there's a couple of us that are all hanging out
8:39 and Janine is near the bar getting a drink on the dark side.
8:42 Hank walks over, steps right in front of Janine and just
8:44 puts his hand out palm up as if to say,
8:48 "Hand it over." Right?
8:49 Like I know you're using a fake, hand it over, but he's saying no words.
8:52 So, from the opposite corner of the bar,
8:55 I am watching this go down and immediately I
8:58 clock that the person standing next to him is Haley.
9:04 [screaming] The reason that the bouncer immediately recognized Haley
9:07 is because they're co-workers and she's a bartender.
9:10 Oh my gosh, what are the odds?
9:14 That is a bad, bad sim.
9:17 Bad luck is what that is.
9:19 As she's fumbling through her crossbody to get this ID out,
9:23 she goes to give it to Hank and Haley snaps
9:26 it out of her hand and just turns and walks away.
9:29 Kind of drew the conclusion that at some point in the bouncer shift,
9:32 he ran down the steps and said to Haley,
9:34 "I just let your friend in with your ID." And Haley said something like,
9:38 "What do you mean my friend?
9:39 I lost my ID at a party." You're right and that's why he let her in.
9:43 He's like, "Oh, it's one of Haley's buddies, she works here,
9:45 we're going to let it slide." I'm caught up now, that makes sense.
9:49 So, now we've pissed off Hank,
9:51 we've pissed off Haley, and we've pissed off the bouncer.
9:54 There's a lot of lies happening here, right?
9:56 From far away, I just see Haley get her ID
10:00 and Janine turns immediately and walks the other way.
10:04 So, I'm like, "We're good.
10:06 I've got three vodka crans and I'm booty bumping.
10:08 Come on back and join the party.
10:10 I think we're fine." And she comes to join the group and is like, "We got to go.
10:14 They're mad.
10:14 This is bad news." Now, truly like out of a movie,
10:18 cut to the next thing we see is we're trying to get up the steps
10:22 and at the top of the steps
10:23 with the bouncer are two East Lansing police officers.
10:27 __] that.
10:28 No, we're going all the way.
10:29 Am I P?
10:31 They were known to send the police officers
10:34 in and kind of have a good relationship and say,
10:37 "Oh, we don't know who's using fake IDs, but if you want to come down, Mhm.
10:41 you're allowed to go and ask people to see their IDs." So,
10:44 we're at the top and we just hear the bouncer say to the police officers,
10:49 "Yeah, blonde in the big pink necklace." Oh.
10:53 Describing god.
10:53 Janine.
10:54 She just pulled off the necklace and throw it?
10:57 Literally.
10:57 So, we are walking the steps.
10:59 Our walk turns into a full-blown sprint.
11:02 We turn the opposite way from the police officers and at this point,
11:06 I don't know if it's the adrenaline, I don't know what's happening,
11:08 but there are no words being said between the group
11:11 of the three of us that are sprinting away from this bar.
11:14 We are just like all somehow telekinesis going
11:17 the same direction and getting out of there.
11:20 End up running away from the police officers.
11:22 They do not chase us.
11:23 In my mind, I was like,
11:25 "We're now going to be on a foot chase." That did not happen.
11:27 We ran around the corner, went into the drunk food spot,
11:30 ditched the pink necklace in the bathroom, and all was well.
11:33 Scary.
11:36 All's well that ends well.
11:37 The full circle full circle of it is she obviously got her fake taken.
11:42 I was like the young one.
11:43 I didn't turn 21 until well into senior year.
11:46 Oh.
11:46 And I got very cocky with my fake ID because it had worked for so long.
11:51 So, for her 21st birthday,
11:52 I tried to use my fake ID and they guess not a good idea.
11:57 And that's when I got mine snatched.
11:58 Happened to the best of us.
12:00 Two things, I used Ken Kennedy's at times when
12:02 I needed to, but mostly we lived in downtown
12:04 Detroit and they did not give a flying[ __]
12:06 what age you were in downtown Detroit in 1993.
12:09 They didn't care at all.
12:10 You go to the liquor store and buy whatever you want and they're like, "Great.
12:13 You got cash, you're good." Mine got taken
12:16 my senior year right before I turned 21.
12:21 It ended up being okay.
12:23 I got 3 years out of it.
12:25 What was yours?
12:25 How'd you How'd you get yours?
12:27 kind, obviously.
12:28 You bought it off of a freshman in the dorm?
12:30 I had a friend who was making them.
12:33 Okay, handmade.
12:35 literally glued to the back of a Blockbuster card.
12:38 You couldn't take it out of the wallet.
12:40 Oh.
12:40 You know, you had the wallet with the clear
12:42 thing and you would just like give them that.
12:44 You know, if they said,
12:45 "Take it out," then you're like, "Actually, I got to go."
12:48 Actually, I have diarrhea.
12:49 I got to go home right now.
12:51 Yeah, that's what happened.
12:52 So, he made me and I cried.
12:55 fugazi.
12:55 You cried?
12:58 Yeah.
12:59 [laughter] I was so embarrassed.
13:01 Janine's coming out.
13:02 Someone over here.
13:03 Gabby might be behind too.
13:05 Hold on, I'm giving my airpod.
13:06 Oh my god.
13:08 Look at this.
13:10 You're still friends.
13:11 Roommates to best friends.
13:13 Oh, that is so cute.
13:16 member?
13:16 I'm was not a part of the story.
13:18 I met them after, but I'm just a huge
13:20 armchair and so Lea and I text all the time.
13:23 When episodes come out,
13:24 we're always just like bonding over it and she was like, "Okay,
13:26 you have to come over to bring some moral support
13:27 for the story and sneak in and say hi if you can." So,
13:30 just wanted to say I'm a huge fan.
13:31 Oh, I love it.
13:33 All right, well, nice meeting all of you.
13:35 Yes.
13:36 Yeah, nice meeting you, too.
13:37 Thank you for letting us tell our story.
13:39 Yeah, thank you.
13:39 So fun.
13:42 [laughter] Bye.
