Behold, the 17" MacBook Pro.

0:10 Like, you know, kids nowadays would just see a mangy old MacBook cuz I mean,

0:14 yeah, she's got some chunk to it.

0:16 But in 2009 to like 2012, mate, these this was a spaceship.

0:21 And it it always seems to be the way.

0:23 When a company is smaller, they have to work harder.

0:27 People forget that Apple was still kind of wet from the gutters.

0:30 Like the late '90s, Apple was like dead.

0:33 If it wasn't for the original iMac, Apple would be gone.

0:36 I don't know how they managed to keep

0:38 their walled garden status [music] this entire time.

0:41 And to me, it was at this point

0:43 that Macs were finally becoming really desirable.

0:46 Jeez, not long before this, they weren't even called MacBooks.

0:49 They were iBooks and PowerBooks.

0:52 This is a unibody MacBook.

0:54 This is when it was made out of just one big chunk of aluminum,

0:58 which is how they were doing it for ages, donkey's days.

1:01 Uh the current MacBooks, I believe,

1:02 are kind of pressed out of a sheet or something,

1:05 which is how they did it before these ones.

1:07 You see, what is old becomes new again.

1:09 Hey, when they called it pro, they stinkin' meant it.

1:12 Look at this.

1:12 MagSafe, one of the best ideas they ever had.

1:15 Ethernet, that's FireWire 800, mini display out, USBs, SD,

1:21 headphone jack, and that is to check your battery.

1:24 That is such a great idea.

1:25 You can see how much batt you got left.

1:28 And you open her up.

1:28 It's iconic.

1:30 And it's actually really sad how good this trackpad still is.

1:34 Glass top.

1:35 And I mean, it's not just the glass top, you know?

1:36 I've I've got a Framework laptop.

1:38 That's glass top.

1:39 And it's just it's still not as good as even an ancient MacBook.

1:44 It's literally like the programming and it's

1:46 the the syncing of the software with the trackpad.

1:50 Apple's just always had it in the bag.

1:52 These keyboards are better than the butterfly ones that came later.

1:55 And honestly, they're not even that bad compared to the new ones.

1:58 But yeah, these things really did set the style for ages.

2:00 Next were the Retina MacBooks, you know, of 2013 and onwards.

2:04 And then 2016, the worst MacBooks they ever made.

2:07 I went through four of those pieces of junk.

2:09 They were terrible, those crappy butterfly keyboards.

2:12 They made them too thin.

2:14 And then arguably, the best MacBook Pros they've ever made,

2:17 which are the more current ones.

2:18 But this is a 13-in MacBook Pro.

2:20 Wait, we're not talking about this.

2:22 Why are we talking about this?

2:23 No, no, no, no, no, no.

2:27 [laughter] We're talking about this.

2:26 The 17-in MacBook [laughter] Pro.

2:32 Look how much space it takes up.

2:35 No!

2:37 [laughter] It barely fits in frame.

2:37 This is a 2009 unibody 17-in MacBook, and they didn't make 17s for very long.

2:43 The first ones came out 2006.

2:46 2009 was the second gen with this unibody look.

2:49 But by 2012, these were gone.

2:51 They boom, no more 17s.

2:53 And they've never gone 17 since.

2:56 I mean, it's still pro AF.

2:58 Oh, look at this.

2:59 I can't even stand it up to show you.

3:01 It's got an extra USB, three of them.

3:04 There's an extra audio McDootinator.

3:06 There's like an expansion port as well.

3:09 And and look, it's yes, it does have the battery test magneta.

3:13 Of course you can't.

3:16 [laughter] We just open But I'm it is funny to see just how

3:18 shrunken down the keyboard is cuz it's the same keyboard and trackpad.

3:24 [laughter] There's just so much room.

3:25 But oh, wait.

3:26 You want to talk about palm rests?

3:27 You can get your whole butt onto this thing.

3:29 This thing is probably worth more as just a slab of aluminum at the scrappers.

3:33 Now, I've actually been hunting one

3:35 of these down for a couple of years, honestly.

3:37 These are still kind of desirable for some people.

3:40 The most desirable ones of these were the late

3:42 2011 ones that had a quad-core i7 in it, like an early Intel i7.

3:49 This isn't, all right?

3:50 This is an '09.

3:51 This has got the Core 2 Duo when dual core was like, "Ooh,

3:54 two two processors, woo." Mate,

3:57 even the mangiest little nug boxes have so many cores nowadays.

4:00 No one even thinks about it.

4:01 I've got a couple of the quad-core ones.

4:03 They're effed.

4:04 The motherboards are a mess.

4:05 That's something that kind of let this generation down is graphics problems,

4:09 and it's all embedded on the motherboard.

4:11 So when it goes cack, you're effed.

4:13 And Apple was a they were dick about it.

4:15 Basically just left out people to dry.

4:17 So uh yeah, there's something magical about this generation of MacBook.

4:20 And it's not that the the Apple logo lights up,

4:22 which, you know, I hate that they took it away.

4:24 And it's also actually quite annoying because the way this works is

4:27 it's just the the backlight of the display shining through a window.

4:30 It's just a an opaque window.

4:33 I we can't have this anymore.

4:34 But Why, yeah.

4:37 Oh, would you look at all these dingle screws?

4:40 And we're in.

4:41 To a degree, this is a fully serviceable machine.

4:45 Something a lot of my mates did back in the day

4:47 cuz like these were all the rage when I was at university.

4:49 Uh they'd pop out the CD drive and replace it with more storage.

4:53 It it made sense why the CD drive went away.

4:56 Like people a lot of people weren't using them anymore.

4:58 And yeah, a lot of my mates were modding them to just add another hard drive.

5:02 Look, there's the RAM.

5:03 You can get straight at it.

5:04 Here's the batt with a pull tab on it to get it out.

5:07 And what's this?

5:09 That's a solid state drive.

5:11 I've added that in there.

5:12 It's got two terried bytes in it now.

5:15 Not even feasible back then.

5:16 Two terried bytes is still heaps today.

5:18 This is just so good being able to get straight into it.

5:21 And you can service it, clean out the fans and whatnot.

5:24 So yeah, as I said, I've been hunting for a working

5:27 one of these for ages for an a proper reason.

5:30 And now I'm actually going to use all the time.

5:32 I'll tell you that in a bit.

5:33 But uh let's go ahead and and sit

5:34 on the floor and let's have a quick play with this.

5:37 Let's see what Mac OS used to look like with Snow Leopard.

5:42 We got it nice and chill, so we can enjoy its warming warming glow.

5:47 What a monster.

5:48 Oh, I heard the CD drive do something.

5:50 Oh, gosh, so bright.

5:54 I mean, this has so little use in it.

5:59 It's not a Retina screen, but it's not bad.

6:04 This is how Mac OS always looked to me.

6:06 This is so classic.

6:08 This is Snow Leopard.

6:09 Look at this.

6:10 It's got depth to the dock.

6:11 There's little reflections and whatnot.

6:14 Cuz I am screens are so high-res nowadays that really flat colors kind of pop.

6:20 You know, like those hard divisions between colors kind of look crisp.

6:24 You know, back in these blurry days, as I'm going to call it,

6:26 you wanted things to have reflections and shadows and glissens cuz

6:30 it kind of covered up just kind of how blurry it is.

6:33 But this is I don't know.

6:34 This just has so much more style to it.

6:37 Now, as someone who has to live out of these stupid things,

6:39 I am penguin powered for the most part, but I still work out of a MacBook.

6:43 Mac to me is the same relation that people have to Windows.

6:46 We deal with it because we have to.

6:48 10.6.8, Snow Leopard.

6:52 Arguably like the greatest Mac OS revision that ever

6:55 came out because it wasn't about new features.

6:58 It was about making your run good.

7:01 Like don't add new features.

7:03 Make the ones you got run good.

7:04 6 gigs of RAM.

7:06 Oh, gosh, someone's going to come and rob me for it.

7:08 And there she is, mate, the Core 2 Duo.

7:11 Oh, no, excuse me.

7:12 It's 95 cycles on the battery.

7:15 That's still so few.

7:17 Yeah, condition, service battery.

7:19 Ah, it holds batts.

7:21 It's good.

7:22 It's fine.

7:22 This backdrop is just iconic.

7:24 It was like just all about like nebulas and space and whatnot.

7:28 And what I love is when you install Mac for the first

7:30 time or you get it going for the first time,

7:32 it's got like a fun intro video with a song and a dance and a whole

7:36 thing like Apple had to work so much harder in those days, all right?

7:40 They were so far behind everyone else that they they had to be good.

7:44 Oh, gosh, no.

7:48 [screaming] iCal, that's what they called it.

7:49 Preview.

7:51 iCh Yeah, iTunes, Time Machine, yeah.

7:54 I mean, I love these icons.

7:55 There's so much detail to them.

7:57 I never liked the iOS 6 Safari-looking piece

8:01 of junk that they're still using to this day.

8:03 It's always looked crap.

8:05 Yeah, I think this was the the beginning of the App Store on Macs.

8:08 And the fun thing about MacBooks is um

8:11 there's not actually much you can do with them.

8:14 [snorts] Unless you're like editing video or using

8:16 GarageBand or just browsing the internet, they're freaking useless.

8:21 So this thing is freaking useless.

8:23 Except I still use iPods.

8:25 I'm I'm getting into them harder than ever.

8:28 Here's my two daily drivers.

8:30 Uh I've got a shrek green 7th gen,

8:33 and I've got this 4th gen just cuz, you know, iconic.

8:36 These are the two most important iPod gens that I had in my life.

8:40 This one's got 128 gigs on it.

8:42 This one's rocking a full terried byte.

8:45 And, you know, people talk about Rockbox and whatnot.

8:47 And Rockbox is great, but one of my favorite things about iPods is

8:52 the ability to find and like sort music, right?

8:55 Like you you've probably seen from my videos with all my CDs and whatnot.

8:59 I have a lot of physical music.

9:01 I own so much music, right?

9:03 Tens of thousands of songs.

9:05 This thing is absolutely loaded up.

9:08 14,000 songs on this little piggy alone, hey?

9:11 And um something that iTunes does, which was annoying back in the day,

9:15 but now I understand how it works.

9:16 You sync your iPods to the computer itself, right?

9:20 The two libraries become one, which made it harder that, you know,

9:24 if you want to plug your iPod into someone else's machine and just, you know,

9:27 get some music off of it, it'd be like, "Oh, well,

9:29 you have to wipe your whole iPod to do

9:31 that." And that really pissed off everybody, me included.

9:34 And now, funny enough,

9:35 that's my favorite feature because this, with its two terabytes in it,

9:40 is my iPod syncing machine.

9:42 I always wanted a huge stinky 17 to do all this work

9:47 because not only can you get three of them going at once,

9:50 it does FireWire, which means my original first

9:53 ever iPods can be synced with this natively.

9:56 This is how I use this.

9:57 I hit shuffle.

9:59 What are you going to give me, mate?

10:00 What's it going to be?

10:01 Right, the past the peas.

10:02 Oh, that's a good one.

10:03 Past the peas.

10:04 Past the peas.

10:05 So, if I if I want to listen to 17 minutes,

10:07 if I like this song, I give it five stars.

10:11 And the next time I sync this with this guy,

10:14 it'll update that song in this library.

10:17 So, if I go to the tunes of the eye See, I'm only just getting started.

10:21 I've only I've been hunting one of these down for years.

10:24 I finally got it going.

10:25 It'll sit in my top-rated, and that playlist will sync across all of my iPods.

10:31 Any iPod I plug in this from a mini to a shuffle

10:34 to a nano All of them will have my top playlist,

10:37 and any one of them that I discover

10:39 new music with, and I give them five-star rating, it'll update this library.

10:44 All of these are running the same library and are doing the same job.

10:49 And no matter what machine I pick up, I can do that job with it.

10:52 That's how I want to use these.

10:53 I want to find all Like,

10:55 what great songs are sitting in my actual physical music collection.

10:59 See, this guy with its terabyte, this is like the flagship iPod that I've got.

11:03 348 gigs worth of audio.

11:07 This has 45,000 songs on it.

11:10 And again, you hit shuffle, what am I going to get?

11:13 Happy Jack from The Who.

11:15 And so, if I want to give that a do, give it a do,

11:18 and the next time I plug it into this cat, it'll update the library.

11:22 And that's how I want to use these iPods is have a mothership of music

11:27 and a bunch of orbiting nuggets that just find

11:30 the music and tell the mothership what they found.

11:33 I'm going to be using this so much,

11:35 and I love that I finally own a working 17-in MacBook Pro in gorgeous condition.

11:42 Not the i7 that I wanted, but I don't need faster than this, really,

11:46 cuz apart from syncing iPods, it's functionally useless.

11:51 Oh, wait.

11:52 Oh, I got to show that.

11:53 It's probably annoying to a lot of people just

11:54 have lights on and just in people's eyes or whatnot,

11:57 but it's just To me, it's iconic,

11:59 and they haven't done it for like 10 years, but oh, well.

12:02 Oh, nearly forgot to show the size comparison against the 16, which is,

12:07 you know, a good cut down the middle between the 15 and the 17.

12:10 16's pretty choice, especially see like I mean, it's not that much smaller.

12:15 It's it's I mean, they did make

12:18 the MacBooks way chunkier like with this generation,

12:21 which was a good thing to do, cuz they actually cool themselves,

12:24 and they actually have ports on them and better keyboards and what Yeah.

12:27 Things don't need to be so thin, right?

12:29 But the 17 really is a titan.

12:33 [laughter] It is just Goliath.

12:33 I mean, I think a lot of it's bezel.

12:35 I mean, there is more bezel, but bigger is bigger.

12:39 So, you know, maybe that means it's also better.

12:41 It doesn't.

12:42 That's a lie.

12:42 So, yeah, you can see why this cat is so important to me.

12:47 I'm back on the pods so hard.

12:49 And now I can't wait to play with my nanos, because you just hit sync.

12:53 I don't care what goes onto these.

12:54 Have I got like what, 2 gigs each?

12:56 Yeah.

12:56 Yeah, they got 2 gigs a piece.

12:58 It's so small, but they do the same job.

13:05 So, no matter which one I'm using, all my favorite music will be there.

13:09 And with a brand new solid-state 2-terabyte drive in it,

13:15 I'll just live on the wall plug, and we'll just keep marching forwards.

13:19 And now I can actually retire my 2007 iMac, which is sitting here.

13:23 Right, this can just be on dank pods nugget duty now.

13:26 It doesn't need to hold all my music no more.

13:28 And it means I can sync iPods at home now.

13:31 It's so much better.

13:33 Now I've got to start converting all my DVDs

13:35 and things that I've got into iPod format

13:38 and fill up the remaining 600 gigs with just

13:40 cartoons and trash I like to destroy my brain with.
