While Striking a Match With a Bullet, These Weird Things Happened- Smarter Every Day 294B

0:03 In the most recent video I uploaded,

0:05 I struck a match with a bullet with my buddy John Henry.

0:09 We did that a long time ago.

0:10 It was really fun.

0:11 We wanted to do it again with slow motion video,

0:13 and we saw some really neat things happen.

0:16 In fact, I kept a list while editing of things I

0:19 wanted to talk about that, I thought were really neat phenomenon like

0:23 physical things that happened during this that I didn't include in the first

0:26 video that I thought would be really fun to talk about.

0:29 So let's just go through my list here.

0:31 The first thing that happened at about eight

0:33 and a half minutes in the main channel video,

0:36 we had this really interesting thing happen when I was editing the video.

0:40 I just happened to be plugging along and then I paused because

0:42 I was working on audio or whatever it is I was working on.

0:45 And I found this frame.

0:47 Now, it is a single frame in the video.

0:49 If I play it real time, the event looks like this.

0:51 Three, two, one, fire.

0:55 [John] All right!

0:57 [D] But if you pause it, there's just one frame that looks like that.

1:00 And I instantly recognize that as rolling shutter, which I love.

1:03 Rolling shutter and aliasing, they're fascinating to me.

1:06 I was like, man, there's rolling shutter.

1:20 Now what that means is those two matches that you see look like a wave.

1:25 They are the ones that got hit.

1:27 And so, sure enough, you go back and you look at the slow motion video,

1:30 check out what you see.

1:31 [SlowMo Whooshing Noises] Isn't that Interesting?

1:40 So that means that the bullet came along and it

1:42 plucked 2 of those matches Like a guitar string...

1:45 And when it did that, [SlowMo POW!] They Vibrated And I don't know,

1:49 I don't have a mental image of it in my head right now But you would think,

1:53 because it's plucked from the top And it's

1:55 fixed at the bottom there's a boundary

1:57 condition there You would think that means that the amplitude of the sine wave

2:01 or whatever it is Would be larger at the TOP of the match than

2:04 it is at the BOTTOM of the match

2:06 ....because you have a boundary condition there...

2:08 Just for fun here's the guitar string footage,

2:10 from that rolling shutter video now you can

2:13 see it's going back and forth back and forth,

2:14 now imagine one side of the guitar strings would be pinned in a certain

2:18 location so instead of having this sine wave looking thing you would

2:22 have more of a tapered version and if you go back and you

2:25 look at what actually happened with this match

2:26 you see that and that's incredible.

2:28 I thought that was cool I didn't wanna put it

2:30 in the main channel video because I just wanted to keep that tight.

2:33 But on the Smarter Every Day 2 we talk about whatever we want!

2:35 and I thought that was really neat and I

2:37 thought you would find that really exciting as well!

2:39 All right, so let's see what else we have.

2:40 Oh, here's another one.

2:42 At around twelve minutes in the main channel video, the bullet's coming along.

2:46 I guess it would be right to left in the screen here.

2:49 Think about the momentum of that system.

2:51 You have a stationary match, and you have a moving bullet.

2:54 So all the momentum is moving in that direction, right?

2:56 But as soon as the bullet touches the very tip of the match,

3:01 there something amazing happens.

3:02 There's this explosion, or maybe it's a fracture event.

3:05 I don't know what it is.

3:07 Long story short, gasses go opposite the direction of the bullet.

3:11 Watch this.

3:12 In slow motion.

3:26 So that's one of two things.

3:28 Number one, either it's a chemical explosion that's happening when you

3:31 have the bullet coming in contact with the phosphorus up there,

3:34 and it just blows that out, or what you have to have is compression of a solid

3:39 and then the release of that strain energy in the fracture.

3:43 So, one of those two things is happening,

3:45 and I'm leaning toward explosion, but I think it's amazing.

3:48 Another thing that's cool is,

3:49 after you see that puff of cloud going back towards the gun,

3:52 you can see the blast wave of all

3:55 the gasses come back from the rifle, blow it back.

3:58 So, you see, it's like bullet.

4:01 Gasses, gasses, and you can just understand everything

4:04 that happens in the system, and it's beautiful.

4:07 And I thought you'd really like to see

4:08 that, because I thought it was really, really fun.

4:15 Okay, gunpowder.

4:17 If you look at some of them,

4:19 especially the ones where I put a white background in the background,

4:21 when Henry and I were shoot, we would talk about,

4:23 oh, man, look at all the gunpowder.

4:25 It's such a dirty burn.

4:27 What's happening there?

4:27 Now, I think that has something to do with the type

4:30 of rifle we're using and the type of ammunition we're using.

4:33 So, here, let me just zoom in here.

4:35 I got to focus my camera.

4:36 If I focus right here.

4:38 Okay, so, the rifle that we're using is a 22 long rifle.

4:43 It's a Ruger 1022.

4:45 Like, everybody in the world has one of those, it seems like.

4:48 But the ammunition we're firing is short rifle ammunition.

4:52 Now, if you just look at it, you can see pretty easily.

4:55 Let's go way in here.

4:57 Let me focus.

4:58 Yeah.

4:59 If you just look at it, you can see that the brass on the long rifle

5:01 is a lot bigger than the brass on the short rifle.

5:04 Now, what that means is when you focusing the camera here,

5:08 when you seat the cartridge, the brass cartridge in that rifle barrel.

5:15 Excuse me.

5:15 Something interesting is happening.

5:16 So, as that thing goes in there,

5:18 you have a place where the rifling of the barrel starts.

5:22 Right.

5:22 Now, if you have the correct size cartridge,

5:24 the brass will go all the way up to the rifling,

5:27 and the bullet will be seating, like, up inside the rifling.

5:31 It'll be started almost.

5:33 But if you shoot a short bullet,

5:35 what 's going to happen is there's going to be a gap.

5:37 There's going to be a gap between the bullet and the rifling.

5:41 Now, what I think is happening,

5:42 and I explained this better in the bullet versus bullet episode.

5:46 I 3D printed these things and showed how the powder

5:48 sits up in there and all that kind of stuff.

5:50 I think that the gunpowder is jumping the gap.

5:54 I don't know that that's true,

5:56 but it just seems to me like all that gunpowder in a.

5:59 22 short rifle bullet would have plenty of time to burn in the barrel.

6:02 So I think it's going out around the whole thing.

6:05 So I think the gunpowder is sneaking around the bullet.

6:09 It's going down the barrel, and it's getting pushed by gasses.

6:13 That's why I think we see this cloud of stuff.

6:15 And, in fact, check this out.

6:17 This is that smoke stripper thing that I made Henry and I put in place.

6:22 We put this there to strip all the gasses out.

6:24 Look how dirty that is.

6:26 And if you look really close,

6:27 you can see there's actually pitting around the perimeter of that.

6:31 And I think that's just straight up gunpowder,

6:33 like, hitting that thing and damaging it.

6:36 So I think that's really interesting.

6:37 Now, all this is important because I think it played

6:41 in to the really crazy thing that happened at the end of the video.

6:45 John Henry and I decided we wanted to take a match,

6:48 and we wanted to break it like this, and we wanted to shove it into the rifle,

6:52 and we wanted to put a bullet behind it.

6:55 And once we did that, the idea was to fire that thing

6:59 down the rifle and maybe even strike a match with a match.

7:05 We had no idea.

7:06 We just wanted to try it.

7:07 But a crazy thing happened.

7:09 And if you saw the main channel video, it actually worked.

7:13 But we struck the match with the bullet.

7:14 It's crazy.

7:15 Check this out.

7:16 And this is the reaction that we had

7:18 that I wanted to put in the main channel video, but decided against it.

7:26 You know, sometimes when you're in the garage with your friend

7:29 John Henry and you decide to try something really,

7:33 really dumb, we just did that.

7:37 So...

7:37 [J] And it worked!

7:39 [Both hysterically laughing] [D] So...

7:47 There's a match down there.

7:50 We put a match in the gun.

7:53 We put a bullet behind the match.

8:01 Allow me...

8:04 To show you, a bullet carrying a match, striking a match.

8:15 [Speechless disbelief] [Mouse Clicking] What do you

8:21 have to say for yourself, John Henry?

8:22 [J] My mind is completely blown at this point.

8:25 [Laughter] [D] Yep, and she lights off.

8:31 So there you go.

8:32 That's the thing that can happen.

8:34 John Henry thinks this is the only time in history this has ever happened.

8:40 Can you.

8:40 [J] I would like for somebody to prove me wrong.

8:42 [D] There you go.

8:54 Okay, so here's the theory.

8:57 Now, we were talking about the gasses jumping around that bullet.

9:01 I would think that if you had a match

9:03 in the barrel and you had a bullet pushing that thing,

9:06 if the shock would shatter the match, that's what I would assume.

9:10 I don't know that's true or not.

9:12 This is a subsonic thing,

9:12 but I would assume that it would at least break the wood of the match.

9:17 That's not what we saw.

9:18 We saw the bullet, which is a hollow point bullet, by the way.

9:22 We saw the wood of the match being

9:26 held inside that hollow point hole right there.

9:29 And it was splintered just a little bit.

9:31 But the bullet was actually spinning as it was flying.

9:34 But the match wasn't spinning.

9:36 So I have a theory now.

9:37 It's just a theory.

9:38 I can't focus again.

9:40 It's just a theory.

9:42 I think that the gasses that came around

9:44 the bullet started pushing the wooden match that's very lightweight,

9:48 just started pushing it down the barrel,

9:50 and then the bullet then caught up with the match.

9:53 So the relative velocity between the match and the bullet,

9:56 I think they were pretty low, so it didn't shatter the match.

10:00 And then that thing was just there, and it was already moving in that direction,

10:04 and it just kind of held it all the way.

10:05 I think it's hilarious.

10:06 It's just a hilarious video.

10:09 And it's just, like, unbelievable.

10:11 And it's so dopey.

10:12 You're like, how on earth is this a thing that happened?

10:15 But it happened, and we caught it on slow mo, and that's awesome.

10:18 When I told Henry about that theory, John Henry said, look,

10:21 man, you can science words this all you want, but it happened.

10:25 And I don't think it would happen again if we tried it a hundred times.

10:27 And I think he's right.

10:28 So, anyway, it was really cool that it happened on the only shot that we did,

10:32 but I thought it was really fun.

10:34 So that's it for my little note list here.

10:38 I kind of did them out of order.
