Phones Are Getting Weird Again!

0:00 So, there's a big event last week called Mobile World Congress MWC.

0:03 Adam and I have a lot of trauma from that event.

0:06 Um basically, there's a lot of stuff that gets launched there.

0:10 Uh it kind of has weaned off in previous years,

0:12 but this year we're freaking back, baby.

0:13 There's a lot of weird stuff coming out there.

0:16 One of those things was the Honor robot phone, which we had Yes, beep beep boop.

0:21 We had shown this phone off a number

0:23 of months ago because they showed off a little concept,

0:25 so we talked about it briefly.

0:27 But now, it's out in the wild, sort of.

0:29 It's attached to tables.

0:30 You can't really, you know, take it around.

0:33 But effectively, what this is is it's it's a phone

0:35 that has a built-in DJI Osmo Pocket in it.

0:39 It's like a little gimbal thing that you can,

0:41 you know, you can like swerve around.

0:43 It stays unfolded out of the phone, which is very crazy.

0:47 Um so, yeah, it's it's weird.

0:50 They claim that it's 70% smaller than the competition.

0:53 Um we're guessing that the competition is the Osmo Pocket.

0:57 Yeah, they just said competition.

0:59 I was like, yeah.

1:00 Gimbal in a smartphone?

1:01 What's the competition here?

1:03 Yeah.

1:04 [laughter] It doesn't look 70% smaller than an Osmo because

1:06 an Osmo's really It's definitely smaller than an Osmo,

1:09 but an Osmo is small.

1:10 Unless they're talking about like actual gimbals.

1:13 Maybe that's the competition.

1:15 they're referring to the literal like gimbal mechanism.

1:19 Yeah.

1:19 To like fold it into a phone.

1:21 Something that's already small, 70% smaller is not Yeah.

1:24 Yeah, true.

1:25 It's smaller.

1:25 The way it comes out is the back of the phone has a kind of plateau,

1:29 and then weirdly enough, all the cameras are on the right side of the plateau,

1:33 which we're not used to seeing.

1:34 And then the left side has a stagger, almost like a step,

1:37 because that needs to half of it needs to slide over the right side,

1:41 and then it flips up on top of the phone.

1:44 Yeah.

1:44 Kind of like remember Essential had that like uh 360 cam that connected

1:50 with pogo pins on the back and was up on the top?

1:52 Yeah.

1:52 Like that.

1:53 And also, kind of looks like that Insta360

1:56 webcam that kind of follows you around.

2:01 Um yeah, it's strange.

2:03 They say it's the smallest 4° of freedom gimbal in the industry.

2:07 And uh the bump is already pretty big,

2:10 but it's it it makes the bump very deep in the phone.

2:14 nuts on that phone.

2:16 Okay, there's a lot of things that are going to be nuts on this phone.

2:18 Yeah.

2:18 One, the wobble of putting it on a table.

2:20 Two, trying to put this in your pocket and not like yank the thing apart.

2:24 You know how when you put your phone in your pocket

2:25 and like the lip of your pocket catches the camera lens?

2:28 What happens on this phone?

2:30 That's another thing.

2:31 Yeah.

2:32 I just I I think there's a reason why they don't let people hold this thing.

2:34 If you watch all the hands-on videos, none of them are hands-on.

2:37 They're just pointing at the phone like on a stick,

2:39 on a stand, in Mobile World Congress.

2:42 And then also, okay.

2:44 So, I got I got briefed on this phone.

2:45 I talked to them about this, and they're

2:46 explaining why it's called the robot phone.

2:48 Do you guys know why it's called the robot phone?

2:50 Kind of.

2:50 It's It's sort of a robot.

2:52 It's like a little robot guy.

2:53 across the desk?

2:54 at you.

2:55 Almost.

2:55 That's pretty much it.

2:57 Uh the the camera itself,

2:59 obviously [snorts] the gimbal will like uh move it out and point

3:02 around and do all sorts of stuff like that and can follow you.

3:05 But also, when you're not using it as a camera,

3:07 it kind of becomes a this anthropomorphic face and nods

3:13 and shakes its head and responds to your queries with sounds.

3:17 So, you can ask it, "Do you think my outfit is nice?" And it will nod and go,

3:21 "Yeah, nice outfit." by moving the gimbal to shake the camera up and down.

3:25 That's why it's the robot phone.

3:27 if it just judged me by what I was looking at on my phone,

3:30 and it could like look down at the screen and look

3:32 back at me [laughter] and just like shake its head.

3:35 That's the first thought I had is,

3:36 "Would it ever say no?" [laughter] Like if you go, "Hey,

3:38 gimbal uh robot phone, do you like my outfit?" And it looks at you and goes,

3:41 "Mhm." It just folds back up.

3:43 It's awesome.

3:44 That would be hilarious.

3:45 Yeah.

3:45 But yeah, apparently uh it'll yeah, respond to your your queries.

3:49 They are apparently also developing accessory to clip it to your backpack.

3:53 So, I think the point of this is that you

3:55 should be able to use voice commands to do different actions,

3:58 and it could be kind of the You You clip your phone to your backpack,

4:01 and then you have like a POV thing going on on your back,

4:04 or maybe on your phone.

4:05 Like the Osmo.

4:06 People like to clip it onto a backpack.

4:08 Yeah.

4:08 It This feels like such a 2026 phone launch of "Hey,

4:12 we actually put some crazy hardware on on this prototype phone,

4:17 and let's still tell you about all the weird AI things

4:20 it can do instead of that we fit a gimbal inside."

4:22 won't pay attention if we don't say AI.

4:24 So, AI AI.

4:25 Yeah.

4:25 They are using a 200 megapixel camera,

4:27 which I assume is primarily used for insane video stabilization.

4:32 Mhm.

4:32 Uh because you're not going to use all 200 megapixels.

4:34 You're going to crop the hell into that thing.

4:36 Mhm.

4:37 Um yeah, it's it's weird.

4:39 Apparently, it's going to come out.

4:41 That This is my Allegedly.

4:43 Or Or is it Is it Is it going to come out?

4:45 out in China only for $3,000 in like limited supply,

4:48 or is it going to like come out?

4:51 Probably uh Okay, they suggested a global

4:53 release in the future was a possibility,

4:57 but they have no timeline.

5:19 And your phone camera bump is like a double plateau essentially on one side.
