OpenClaw Tutorial: Build Your Own AI Assistant in Minutes (No Code Required)

0:03 but it's also one of the easiest to misuse

0:06 if you don't understand what it's actually doing.

0:09 OpenClaw lets an AI assistant run commands, read files, make decisions,

0:14 and automate real tasks through the tools and services you connect to it.

0:18 In other words, it can behave like

0:20 a true digital assistant or even a digital employee.

0:23 But giving software that much capability also comes with real risks,

0:28 especially if you're trying to set everything up and manage it yourself.

0:32 So in this video, in partnership with Hostinger,

0:34 we're going to take a look at what

0:36 makes OpenCloud different from other AI tools, what makes it so powerful,

0:39 and how you can get started using it

0:41 in a way that's both practical and approachable.

0:43 And we'll do that by building a simple OpenClaw chatbot you can

0:47 interact with through Telegram without having to deal with a complicated setup,

0:52 server configurations, or managing infrastructure yourself.

0:55 But first, what makes OpenCloud different from normal AI tools?

1:00 Tools like ChatgBT, Claude, or Google Gemini are great at analyzing text,

1:06 answering questions, helping you brainstorm ideas, or generating content.

1:10 But in most cases, those tools stop at the answer.

1:14 OpenClaw is designed not just to generate answers, but to actually take actions.

1:19 It can run tasks, interact with services, schedule actions,

1:23 and communicate with you through messaging apps

1:26 like Telegram or WhatsApp, Signal or iMessage.

1:28 So instead of just giving advice,

1:31 it can actually operate inside your digital environment.

1:34 For example, a typical AI chatbot might help you draft an email response.

1:38 But an OpenClaw assistant could go further.

1:41 It could monitor your inbox, detect meeting requests,

1:44 check your calendar for availability,

1:45 schedule the meeting, and send the confirmation.

1:48 Or as another example,

1:50 you could ask it to monitor your favorite YouTube channels,

1:53 summarize new uploads each morning,

1:55 and send you a short digest of the content through WhatsApp.

1:59 So, OpenClaw isn't just a different AI model.

2:02 What makes it different is that OpenClaw connects

2:05 AI to real systems and performs real actions.

2:08 So that's what makes it incredibly powerful,

2:10 but it's also why it needs to be handled carefully.

2:13 Because once you give an AI assistant access to files,

2:17 applications, or services,

2:18 you're giving it the ability to interact with your digital

2:21 life in ways that normal AI tools simply can't.

2:24 And that brings us to the risks.

2:26 Unlike most AI tools that simply generate text in a browser window,

2:30 OpenClaw can be given permission to interact

2:32 with and given access to things like your file system,

2:35 your API keys, your cloud services, your messaging accounts,

2:39 and sometimes even your shell or command line.

2:42 And if that system is misconfigured

2:44 or exposed to the internet without proper security,

2:47 it could potentially leak sensitive data or run commands you didn't intend.

2:51 There are plenty of stories already of employees playing with OpenClaw

2:55 and accidentally exposing their work computers to the wider internet.

2:59 Another risk comes from skills or plugins.

3:01 OpenClaw allows you to install third party

3:04 skills that extend what your assistant can do.

3:07 But just like browser extensions or mobile apps,

3:10 those skills may request access to services like GitHub,

3:14 email accounts, or cloud storage.

3:16 So installing the wrong skill or granting too many permissions

3:19 could expose part of your system you didn't intend to share.

3:22 There's also the risk of running openclaw directly on your personal computer.

3:26 Because if the assistant has access to your machine,

3:29 it could theoretically read files, interact with applications,

3:32 or trigger automated workflows that affect

3:35 or compromise your everyday work environment.

3:37 Now, none of this means you shouldn't experiment with OpenClaw,

3:41 but it does mean you should approach

3:43 it thoughtfully and with the right safeguards.

3:45 And one of the simplest ways to reduce these risks is to run

3:48 it in an isolated environment rather than directly on your own computer.

3:52 Instead of setting all that up yourself,

3:55 platforms like Hostinger handle the environment for you behind the scenes.

3:58 That means your assistant runs its own secure always

4:01 on space separate from your personal files and applications.

4:04 So, you still get the benefits of isolation and reliability without

4:08 having to manage servers or configure security or maintain the system yourself.

4:13 Now, the trade-off is that your assistant won't have

4:16 direct access to apps running locally on your machine.

4:20 But because most tools like email, calendars,

4:22 and web services are all cloud-based anyway,

4:25 OpenClaw can still interact with them and help automate your workflows.

4:29 So, in this video, we're going to build

4:32 our OpenCloud chatbot using Hostinger's managed OpenCloud plan.

4:41 And here you can choose between a fully

4:44 managed OpenClaw plan or a more advanced VPS setup.

4:46 For this video, we'll use the managed plan,

4:49 so everything is handled for us and we

4:51 don't have to worry about any technical setups.

4:54 You can see some of the advantages here, such as it being ready out of the box,

4:58 zero maintenance, built-in Telegram and WhatsApp pairing, and so on.

5:01 Just click choose plan to go to the cart.

5:06 Be sure to keep the 24-month period selected for the best rate.

5:10 Now, below that is where you can purchase AI credits.

5:13 Normally, when you run tools like Open Claw,

5:15 you have to create accounts with AI providers like Open AI or Enthropic,

5:20 generate API keys, and connect those services to your installation.

5:24 Hostinger simplifies this by bundling AI usage into its own credit system.

5:28 So instead of configuring multiple AI accounts,

5:31 you simply purchase Nexos AI credits directly through your hosting or dashboard

5:35 and OpenClaw uses those credits whenever it sends prompts to the AI model.

5:39 So this means you don't have to configure API keys just to get started.

5:43 Now you still always have the ability to connect to external AI providers,

5:46 but the built-in credit system makes it much easier to get started.

5:50 So make sure you keep this option selected if you're using the built-in

5:53 system since you'll need AI credits for your assistant to generate responses.

5:57 You can also come over here to the right and click

6:02 have a coupon code and enter start openclaw for an additional discount.

6:07 And after completing your purchase,

6:09 you'll see a setup screen while your OpenClaw installation is configured.

6:15 Once that's done, you'll see the option

6:17 to connect your WhatsApp or Telegram account to OpenClaw.

6:19 Connecting to a Discord account will also be an option in the near future.

6:23 For this example, I'll choose to set it up through Telegram.

6:26 You'll then see instructions on how to connect your account.

6:28 And in this case, we'll see the steps to connect to Telegram.

6:32 Now, before we jump into that, you will need your own

6:34 free Telegram account from which to send and receive messages.

6:37 If you don't already have one,

6:39 go to telegram.org to download the app and set up an account.

6:43 And once you have that, you'll be able to talk to your assistant simply

6:47 by sending it messages from the Telegram app on your computer or mobile device.

6:51 And any message you send to your Telegram bot

6:53 will be routed through OpenClaw and handled by your assistant.

6:56 So, make sure you set up your account

6:58 and then we'll come back here and follow these instructions.

7:01 All right, so I've opened up Telegram on my computer and signed into my account.

7:05 And here in the chat area under search,

7:08 I'm going to search for a user called BotFather.

7:11 This is Telegram's official tool for creating

7:13 and managing bots that interact through it.

7:16 Make sure you do select the one called atbotfather with the blue

7:18 check mark next to it as some other accounts have similar looking names.

7:23 Once I've selected that account,

7:26 I'll click start and it sends a default message giving

7:29 you a list of popular commands you can use with it.

7:32 Notice the first one here is new bot which lets you create a new bot.

7:35 And that's what I want to do.

7:38 So in the chat area down here at the bottom I'll enter the command slash newbot.

7:44 And now we just set it up through a conversation with botfather.

7:48 It says, "All right, a new bot.

7:50 Please choose a name for your bot." Now,

7:51 this is simply the display name you'll see in your chat list.

7:54 So, you can choose anything you like.

7:56 Since I'm making an open claw bot, I'll call mine Pinchy.

8:00 Next, Telegram asks for a username for the bot.

8:03 Now, this one has to be unique, and it also has to end with the word bot.

8:08 So, you might have to try several names

8:10 before you find one that isn't already taken.

8:13 For example, if I just try to call this Pinchybot,

8:16 it tells me the name is already taken.

8:23 So, I'll probably have to try a couple of different ones.

8:31 the bot and provides a bot token.

8:34 This token is essentially the credential that allows

8:36 Open Claw to connect to the bot.

8:38 And notice it tells you to keep your token secure and to store it safely

8:41 because it can be used by anyone to control your bot if they have this token.

8:47 So in this case, I'm just going to copy that token and then I'll come back

8:54 to my browser to the Hostinger setup page

8:55 and paste that where it says enter bot token.

8:59 I'll click next.

9:02 Then it tells me to go to my bot and paste in slashstart.

9:06 So I'll come back here and type in slashstart.

9:09 And oops, actually what I was supposed to do was go to the bot itself.

9:14 So I actually pasted that into bot father.

9:16 So it gave me this list of instructions again.

9:18 But in this case, I need to go to my bot.

9:21 And I can see the link for that bot right here.

9:25 And here I'll click start.

9:26 So you can see now I'm talking to my actual bot that was created.

9:29 And that gives me this pairing token that I can copy

9:34 and then go back to my open clause setup and paste in.

9:43 I'll click approve.

9:45 And now we see this message that we're all set.

9:47 Now here we see our access key.

9:49 I'll click access key to copy to my computer's clipboard.

9:54 Now, you might want to paste this access key into a text file

9:57 or some other storage area on your computer so you always have access to it.

10:01 And now I'll click open claw.

10:03 Now you may be prompted to enter your access key in which

10:06 case you can just paste it in since we just copied it.

10:09 But in this case, I'm now looking at my open claw dashboard.

10:12 Notice the chat area is selected by default.

10:15 So I can immediately start chatting by typing in the prompt area down below.

10:22 I'll just type in hello.

10:25 Now, the message you get back may vary,

10:26 but it's basically telling me that it's here and responding to my messages.

10:29 It's asking, "What are we working on today?" Or do

10:32 I just want to test that the chat is working?

10:35 I could say, "I'm testing that the chat is working." And again,

10:40 it gives me a confirmation.

10:42 I could ask it other things like, "What is your name?" Now, in some cases,

10:46 it might ask you to tell it its name, but I'll ask it, do you know your name?

10:50 It says, I haven't set my name in this workspace yet.

10:53 What name do you want me to go by?

10:59 I'll say your name is Pinchy.

11:02 My name is Garrick.

11:05 And there it is, basically confirming that it knows its name.

11:08 Now, now in other OpenCL clause setups, this is a point where you would have

11:12 to configure your communication app like Telegram or WhatsApp.

11:14 But we've already taken care of it and we

11:18 can test this by going back to Telegram and sending

11:22 the bot message of what is your name and it

11:29 confirms that it knows the name I've given it.

11:31 So, you can see that Hostinger made it pretty

11:33 easy to set up my Open Call chatbot through Telegram,

11:35 and I can now continue my conversations here or on my phone

11:38 instead of through the chat area when logged into my web browser.

11:41 Now that the Telegram chatbot is working,

11:43 the real value comes from what you can actually do with it.

11:46 Right after setup, you can instantly

11:48 use your assistant for things like research,

11:50 summarizing information, brainstorming ideas, or drafting messages.

11:55 For example, right off the bat, I can ask it something like,

11:58 "Search some of the most reliable and trusted tech

12:01 news websites and summarize some of the most important AI

12:08 headlines in the past 24 hours." And I get

12:14 a message that it's pulling today's AI headlines from multiple sources.

12:25 And notice it's not only providing the news,

12:27 but also it gives you insights on why these stories matter.

12:30 And I could, of course, ask follow-up questions or have it research

12:34 additional information about any of these topics.

12:36 And this works right out of the box with no additional APIs

12:39 or setup required for your bot to scrape content from the web.

12:42 Now, depending on what and how you ask it,

12:45 it may ask follow-up questions so it fully understands what you're requesting.

12:49 But in this case, it understood it pretty

12:51 well and gave me exactly what I asked for.

12:53 Now, I could even ask it to do something even more involved,

12:56 like have it monitor my favorite YouTube

12:58 channel for new content with a prompt like,

13:01 "Monitor the YouTube channel at Kevin Stratford and send me

13:04 a summary of any new videos published in the last 24 hours.

13:07 Send me a summary every morning at 8 a.m.

13:10 Eastern time." Now, this would be a pretty complex

13:13 task to set up with a regular AI model,

13:15 but OpenCloud will understand what I'm asking,

13:17 and it will most likely ask follow-up questions to help

13:20 it refine the workflow as it builds it in the background.

13:24 Let's see what happens.

13:26 Now, anytime you see the phrase typing there at the top of the screen,

13:29 that tells you that your command made

13:30 it through and it's now thinking and responding.

13:33 Now, I've tried this in the past.

13:36 is telling me that it's trying a different approach than it

13:39 tried last time and letting me know exactly what it's doing.

13:42 In this case, it's using the RSS feed it was able to get from the channel ID.

13:49 It was able to see the uploads with the published timestamps

13:52 and it gives me a summary of what is set up.

13:55 The schedule is every day at 8 a.m.

13:57 The source is Kevin Stratford's YouTube feed.

14:00 Videos published since yesterday at 8 a.m.

14:02 Eastern time.

14:02 and that the video should be summarized and sent to this chat.

14:06 Notice it's even offering to run a test run now,

14:08 so I don't have to wait until 8 a.m.

14:12 tomorrow to see the output.

14:14 So, I'll just say yes.

14:16 Again, we can see at the top of the screen that it's thinking.

14:22 And there it is.

14:24 It says in the past 24 hours,

14:27 it's published one called AI agents that screen clients and reply for you.

14:30 It gives me a link to the video, tells me when it was published,

14:34 gives me a description, and even offers key takeaways from the video itself.

14:38 There's the second video that was published.

14:41 And again, it provides all that same information.

14:44 And until I tell it to stop,

14:46 this information will now be delivered through Telegram at 8 a.m.

14:50 every morning without me asking for the information.

14:53 And because everything runs on my hosting or plan,

14:55 my assistant is always running in the background,

14:57 ready to send me updates or respond whenever I message it.

15:01 Now, for more complex or specialized tasks,

15:04 you can also install skills to give OpenClaw additional abilities.

15:10 If we come back here to the OpenClaw control area,

15:14 notice there's a skills section over here.

15:17 Notice this area called built-in skills.

15:20 Here you'll find skills that are already installed

15:22 as well as others that can be added.

15:25 And these skills extend what your assistant can do.

15:28 For example, the weather skill lets

15:31 your chatbot retrieve current weather conditions and forecasts.

15:34 The Trello skill allows you to interact

15:36 with the Trello project management system.

15:39 And if you want your assistant to monitor blogs or RSS feeds,

15:43 you can install the Blog Watcher skill.

15:45 Now, we're not going to get into skills in this video,

15:47 but it's good to know that this is where

15:48 you can expand what your assistant is capable of doing.

15:52 But even with the default installation,

15:54 our bot is already powerful and capable enough

15:56 to handle an enormous variety of tasks and requests.

15:59 Now, again, one thing it can't do in the setup

16:02 is directly monitor or control applications running on your personal computer.

16:06 Because OpenClaw is running in its own managed environment,

16:09 it's separate from your local machine.

16:12 The trade-off, however, is improved security and reliability.

16:15 Your assistant is separated from your personal files and applications.

16:18 It's always online, and it can continue running tasks

16:22 in the background even when your computer is turned off.
