The Boys Cast Break Down The Biggest Moments From Season 4

GQ

0:01 Strong slate, right?

0:02 Y'all like that?

0:03 Y'all like that?

0:05 I am Nathan Mitchell.

0:06 I'm Colby Minifie.

0:07 I'm Karl Urban.

0:08 I'm Jack Quaid.

0:09 Laz Alonso.

0:10 I'm Chace Crawford.

0:11 I'm Erin Moriarty.

0:12 What's up?

0:13 Jessie T.

0:13 Usher.

0:14 That was cool.

0:15 Hi, I'm Karen Fukuhara.

0:17 And these are the biggest moments from The Boys season 4.

0:21 [music]

0:24 Butt on ice.

0:27 [music]

0:31 Ooh, oh god, that day that was amazing.

0:33 I mean, I we actually got to watch them like perform all of that.

0:37 So, Laz and I, we were shooting a thing that was

0:39 kind of next to the rink and oh my god, every part of it was just spectacular.

0:45 I think our favorite part was there was just this is the donkey.

0:49 There's a donkey in there and it's like two guys in a donkey costume and just

0:53 there's something about like the expression the donkey

0:55 has that just made me laugh every time.

0:57 Like we have to give our our our flowers to Michael Ground

1:01 for that whole the costumes in that were amazing and the donkey

1:04 costume took like weeks and weeks to make and the day before

1:08 they went to go shoot all of that, they found they were like,

1:11 "Where's the donkey costume?" and it had been put in the dumpster.

1:15 They put it in the dumpster and they had to dig it out

1:17 of the dumpster and they were able to like get but it was like chaos.

1:20 There was something that had happened where it was

1:22 a mistake was made like Michael Ground worked his ass off.

1:26 He does every single episode.

1:28 And it's okay to whoever put it in the dumpster or it's fine.

1:30 IT'S NOT OKAY.

1:35 OH.

1:36 TIMES DO YOU THINK HUGHIE'S BEEN saved at this point?

1:38 I don't know.

1:39 I think I've been saved yeah yeah countless

1:41 times including by you but I don't know.

1:44 I guess I'll open up that up to the group.

1:45 Countless times.

1:46 What do you think?

1:47 47.

1:48 Eight episodes per season four four seasons so far.

1:52 30 36.

1:55 32 32 36.

1:57 Yeah.

1:58 Okay, I'll go with 36 and I think the person

1:59 who saved me truly the most was Annie January.

2:03 Isn't there an episode called you saved me

2:05 about each other but we but it's mutual saving?

2:08 I've saved as well.

2:10 I'm sure I have saved that.

2:14 saver Couldn't save Robin.

2:18 OKAY, ALL RIGHT.

2:19 WE THOUGHT A-TRAIN WAS MAKING A FACE TURN.

2:21 WE THOUGHT HE [laughter] WAS A GOOD GUY NOW.

2:26 BODY BAG A-TRAIN MADE A TURN.

2:32 [laughter] HOMELANDER FIRES ASHLEY BARRETT.

2:39 ASHLEY, you can go.

2:42 Sorry, sir.

2:42 a meeting of the seven.

2:43 You're not a member.

2:45 But I'm always here.

2:46 I Oh, Sage is going to take over your workload.

2:48 For all intents and purposes, she's the new CEO.

2:54 Am I getting fired?

2:55 This was a really big moment for Ashley especially because she

2:58 just loves having power and she likes doing something with that power.

3:02 I think it makes her feel like she's actually there for a reason

3:05 and so when Homelander says you are no longer the head of Vought,

3:09 you're just basically a puppet and a mascot for us,

3:12 I think she's absolutely devastated cuz I do think she

3:15 takes a lot of pride in the work that she does.

3:17 And in that moment, it was really fun scene

3:19 to shoot because I was trying to do a lot

3:22 see with like dropping all these folders and I had

3:24 a a flame dress that was designed perfectly by Michael

3:27 Ground and I dropped my folders and my heel kept

3:31 getting caught in the fold of the dress and so

3:33 I couldn't stand up after dropping the folders and so

3:35 I just ended up crawling out of the room.

3:37 It's a blooper that didn't make it into the blooper

3:39 reel and I'm actually really sad about it.

3:41 [laughter] I know I needed to see it.

3:43 I wanted to see it.

3:45 But it was really fun.

3:46 Ashley is a character that you play her so well.

3:49 She's so complicated in the sense that like she is part of this horrible evil

3:53 corporation and propaganda machine and yet I

3:55 fear for your safety on a daily basis.

3:57 So, I don't know.

3:58 That scene was kind of a perfect encapsulation of that and I

4:01 think you play her so beautifully in in terms of like, "Oh,

4:04 I root for you and I hate you." I'm going to sit

4:08 my swollen on your stupid masked face and piss like a skunk.

4:13 And I just had asparagus.

4:16 You want that?

4:18 Yes.

4:19 Yes.

4:21 [screaming] Do I think Ashley feels like she can actually control anything?

4:24 I yes, everybody below her.

4:26 Everybody that that works for her, whoever she

4:29 is participating in a BDSM dungeon experience with.

4:35 That's what she can control.

4:37 Yeah.

4:37 I that's why she does that.

4:41 [laughter] Did any of you guess right what Ashley's power became?

4:45 No.

4:46 No way.

4:47 Not at all and it's fantastic.

4:50 I didn't even guess it right.

4:51 Yeah.

4:52 I studied performing arts at adult camp.

4:54 I did Cirque du Soleil in Montreal.

4:55 You didn't hire me to stand around like a oak tree.

4:58 What do you need?

4:58 Some direction.

5:00 Look, I'm on an island here.

5:01 Okay, I have questions but I'm not allowed to speak.

5:03 Like Noir lives in a ninja dojo apartment.

5:06 For best I can tell, he didn't know karate.

5:08 I need some intentionality here.

5:10 Is there like a playlist I can use to get me inside his head?

5:12 What was on Black Noir's playlist?

5:14 I would say a little a little a What What do you say?

5:19 white noise [laughter] Just white noise.

5:21 white noise Yeah, I would say say a little Backstreet Boys.

5:27 Ooh.

5:28 Yes.

5:30 Wow.

5:30 Nathan's playlist.

5:31 Black Black Noir's playlist.

5:34 Classical music.

5:35 He loves classical music.

5:36 I think Noir has a very innocent mind.

5:39 You know, you might imagine like death metal or something like

5:42 that but I think it is like a a good amount of pop music.

5:45 Like it's going to be me.

5:46 Like imagine like him just killing someone

5:49 with that playing in his in his in his head.

5:52 Just Noir and what about Noir 2 cuz Noir 2, yeah.

5:56 Right?

5:56 There's Noir and there's Noir 2 2.

5:58 Yeah, he'd be listening to like a Shakespeare podcast.

6:01 A-Train's redemption.

6:15 What are you doing?

6:17 Wait, are you you're the leak?

6:20 Did he just talk?

6:22 Bro.

6:23 It was you, bro.

6:24 The one thing that I think I was the most

6:26 thankful for on our show in terms of, you know,

6:30 the writing was the fact that they took the time

6:34 to give him an opportunity to make like an actual turn.

6:38 He didn't just wake up one day and just started being a different person.

6:40 We we saw the moments happen that sort of changed the way

6:44 that he thought and who he cared about and what was, you know, important to him.

6:48 His perspective changed in real time.

6:50 I was very thankful that I got a chance to play that all the way through.

7:03 Why'd you do that?

7:06 A-Train got to save me this season.

7:09 Truly truly wonderful.

7:10 I was in a harness and Jessie was just

7:13 in Jessie's arms like we're in The Bodyguard or something.

7:16 Wait, it was amazing.

7:17 Side story about that.

7:18 One of my favorite moments from that season is when we

7:20 were in the alleyway and I had you in my arms.

7:22 We were playing and we had a like a a looky-loo

7:26 from the window then the apartments above us and they looked down.

7:30 They're filming.

7:30 Yeah, yeah, filming and then they see us see them and run back

7:33 and I'm holding Jack like this and he looks at me and goes,

7:35 "Well, THAT'S A SPOILER." [laughter] DEFINITELY.

7:41 I'M JUST CRADLING HIM AND HE'S LIKE, "WELL,

7:43 I guess that's out." A-Train's really made a face turn.

7:47 I feel very comfortable here.

7:49 But yeah, you know, he starts off in a very bad place and a lot of people

7:53 tell me all the time that they they hated

7:55 him in the very beginning and I love that.

7:57 You know, I I love that.

7:58 You're supposed to, right?

8:00 You're supposed to hate him and the fact that now, you know,

8:03 he has people who are rooting for him, cheering for him,

8:05 begging, "Please don't kill A-Train." You know, like wow cuz season 1,

8:12 they're like, "This guy's got to have always always hated your ass.

8:19 You dodge A-Train's punch.

8:20 I forget the story.

8:21 The the internet went went [laughter] into a frenzy.

8:24 They were like, "How was The Deep fast enough to dodge

8:27 A-Train's impossible in the flat iron in the flat iron?" Yes, yes.

8:32 Yeah, they were like,

8:33 "A-Train You know what I mean?" He's dodging stuff and then like all

8:36 of a sudden he throws a full force punch and Deep just goes [laughter]

8:41 My thing was like maybe A-Train was really savoring it.

8:44 Like he's like, "Ooh, this is going to be so good." He's like,

8:46 "Oh, I should have just punched regular."

8:48 It's not just talking to fish now, is it?

8:50 Yeah, yeah, exactly exactly.

8:51 Maybe The Deep is the fastest man on Earth.

8:54 YEAH.

9:02 [groaning]

9:03 I DON'T THINK ANYONE ELSE HAS EVER THOUGHT about like going for the gills.

9:06 I give that to Annie.

9:07 I don't think anyone else has thought about just like sexual context when

9:16 it's like really intentional cuz you have

9:18 a sexual encounter with your gills, right?

9:20 Yeah, yeah.

9:21 Yeah.

9:22 In all of your suits, there's there's there's like armor here, right?

9:26 So, you'd think there would be padding here.

9:28 You would think.

9:29 But you know.

9:30 That's his vulnerability and I remember season season 1,

9:35 we were I remember being in the hair and makeup trailer

9:37 and there was just like Chace's gills were just loose in the trailer.

9:40 I accidentally fingered his gills.

9:44 And they were disgusting.

9:47 They never cleaned them out.

9:49 They they would put lube in them.

9:51 They were disgusting.

9:56 [sighs] Noir will be back up here in no time so let's go.

9:58 He's right there.

9:59 Let's do it.

9:59 You know how, Butcher?

10:01 Cuz I don't.

10:02 When the wash is how he's going to know how to kill us.

10:05 Come the on.

10:06 Season 4 was actually a really tough season

10:09 to play because he's always had a job to do.

10:13 And that was partially, you know,

10:15 to execute Butcher's plan and also partially to talk

10:20 him off the ledge to keep him from going overboard.

10:22 And that season they kind of went their separate ways.

10:25 It was definitely a different dynamic in our group in the very first half

10:30 of the season to play with just the four of us instead of the five of us.

10:33 It was kind of you were kind of solo.

10:35 Mhm.

10:35 in the beginning of season 4 until he finally comes back

10:38 at the end and we're we're a team again, at least briefly.

10:42 The Deep kills Ambrosius.

10:46 She doesn't RESPECT YOU.

10:47 SHE DOES RESPECT ME.

10:49 WAKE UP, KEVIN.

10:50 She's using you.

10:51 YOU SHUT THE UP.

10:56 KEVIN.

10:57 KEVIN.

10:58 HE'S MY BUDDY.

11:00 HEY, KEVIN.

11:02 SWEET GIRL.

11:03 I killed her.

11:03 Yeah, yeah.

11:05 What did she do to me?

11:07 What did she do to me?

11:09 No, no, I mean that was a blast.

11:11 I loved it.

11:11 I think we know when Kripke kind of was like,

11:14 "Have you seen my octopus teacher?" And I was like,

11:16 "I have." And you know, he was like,

11:18 "Didn't it seem like that guy was trying to her?" Like the octopus.

11:20 And I was like, It's like, "Well, when you put it that way, I go,

11:25 I'm scared for my storyline." And he's like, "No, this is his like mistress.

11:30 Like he's like kind of ashamed, but also the only person he can really

11:34 connect with like emotionally." And then I'm like reading,

11:37 you know, poetry to an octopus in bed.

11:39 It was It was wonderful.

11:41 It was wonderful, yeah.

11:42 The dark bottom jellyfish glow.

11:45 Like fat house lava lamps.

11:47 I can swim you anywhere.

11:49 The seven seas.

11:51 One big wet road.

11:52 Jesus, Kevin, you really have the soul of a poet.

11:55 I still haven't met her.

11:56 No.

11:57 No, and I would hope that she would remember me.

12:02 [laughter] When I do meet her.

12:02 No, but I didn't know till I went in for ADR

12:05 like a year later like doing ADR for the scene.

12:08 You want to hear who it is?

12:09 And I was like, "Yeah." It was incredible.

12:12 She made the scene, really, to be honest.

12:14 So much funnier with her in in it as Ambrosius.

12:16 So Butcher finds out Joe Kessler's truth.

12:22 No one ever said nothing about genocide.

12:24 What's that supposed to mean?

12:25 You're me.

12:26 You got a big old fat V'd up brain tumor,

12:29 you which is why you are seeing me in the first place.

12:33 I am you.

12:34 I really enjoyed crossing that threshold where Butcher discovers

12:39 that it's all been in his mind and then just

12:41 exactly how sick he is and and what the stakes

12:44 are for him actually losing control of his humanity.

12:47 I didn't know it was coming.

12:48 It was, you know, as a lot of things in The Boys,

12:50 it was a conversation that was that happened well

12:54 before the commencement of photography for for season 4.

12:59 It was a challenge to shoot the whole season Butcher-Kessler moments because

13:03 I'd have to act the scene out with Jeffrey Dean there and everybody.

13:08 And then they would take Jeffrey Dean out.

13:09 And so I had to redo the scene, but with no Jeffrey Dean there.

13:14 And do it sort of for continuity.

13:15 Just do it all exactly the same.

13:17 I was shocked.

13:18 I had no idea.

13:19 My jaw hit the floor.

13:20 Yeah.

13:20 Oh, yeah.

13:21 I knew.

13:22 Sorry.

13:22 Oh, wow.

13:23 I was I had shadowed one of the directors in season Oh, okay.

13:26 And I was like, yeah, yeah, Shana Shana Stein.

13:29 And there was a moment where we had to shoot something extra.

13:31 I was on a meeting and I was like, ooh.

13:34 Cool.

13:34 [clears throat]

13:36 [laughter] It's like and then they were like, "Colby, once again,

13:38 you can't." I was like, "No,

13:39 of course Billy Butcher tears Victoria Neuman in half.

13:47 You're going to help us take down Vought and Homelander.

13:54 Oi.

14:03 Butcher?

14:05 No deals.

14:06 Clearly Butcher's the hero in that beat.

14:08 That's come on.

14:09 Yeah, like he's taking down another supe.

14:11 She was going to betray us.

14:12 You know that's true.

14:13 I have no Yeah, 100%.

14:15 was coming around.

14:16 were making a pretty good alliance.

14:18 I don't know.

14:18 She was She was manipulative, two-timing.

14:22 She was I don't trust This is the character I'm talking about.

14:25 Is it politics?

14:26 You can't trust politicians.

14:27 But she had a daughter and she was

14:29 coming around and she feared for her daughter's safety.

14:31 I was on the phone with her.

14:35 Please, Butcher.

14:56 Well, season 4 Butcher is dying of cancer.

14:59 The Kessler within him is allowed to take over.

15:02 I think Butcher ostensibly as we know him dies

15:05 and is then sort of taken over by the symbiote.

15:08 And the first thing he does is bust into Huey's meeting with Victoria

15:14 Neuman and they're going to figure out a way to do some good together.

15:17 And Butcher was like,

15:18 "Not going to have it." And so he rips Victoria Neuman in in half.

15:22 I did not expect that.

15:23 remember that moment because I was standing

15:26 directly across from Karl Butcher and I started bawling for one of the takes

15:33 because he really felt like a different person.

15:37 And that's a testament to your acting and all of the above.

15:41 And it just hit me so hard because

15:43 it's like looking at someone that you've known

15:45 for years and I didn't see the old Butcher or the Karl that I knew in the take.

15:50 And it was a really remarkable moment.

15:52 And also saying goodbye to a character that Oh, so loved.

15:56 family.

15:56 You know, saying goodbye to Victoria.

15:58 That is actually a recurring thing that's come up to me

16:00 come up with me in the in the interim since

16:03 that episode is actually it is just how many people come

16:05 up and go and just like give me for killing Victoria Neuman.

16:09 And it's just so Yeah,

16:10 it's just so well loved as a character and And the way it happened specifically.

16:14 It's just sudden.

16:16 So sudden and And she was such a good sport about it, too, on set.

16:20 It just broke her heart, yeah.

16:22 Correct me if I'm wrong, guys.

16:23 That was like our last day of shooting season 4.

16:26 So that whole sequence.

16:27 And she brought cupcakes.

16:29 She did.

16:29 Remember with her face on it?

16:31 I I can't remember what Something like like like lots of blood, guts, and

16:37 Yeah, thank you.

16:38 [clears throat] Oh, yeah, thank you for all the blood, sweat, semen, and tears.

16:42 With the whole class act the whole sort

16:44 of revelation of Butcher's power or superpower that he morphed

16:48 into was actually a bit of a mystery because

16:50 we didn't really know what it was going to be.

16:53 There was a very rudimentary like animation pre-vis.

16:57 You know, Eric was describing to me what it it it would be.

17:00 And yeah, it turned out to be

17:02 the ugliest superpower in the history of superpowers.

17:06 [laughter] It's gross.

17:08 Homelander seizes the government.

17:10 Kimiko says no.

17:12 Now that we have full legal authority,

17:14 veritable army of superheroes will be called upon to route

17:18 these traitors from our government and from our streets.

17:22 America will be safe again.

17:25 And to the Starlighters,

17:27 whatever rock you're hiding under, we're coming for you.

17:30 I think it's interesting cuz at the beginning of the season,

17:33 you know, if I'm not mistaken, like you see Homelander kind of bored.

17:38 At that point he's had everything he's ever wanted.

17:40 He's like, "Oh, what am I going to do?" You know,

17:42 and then Sage comes in and she plants a new seed in his ear.

17:46 You have all of Homelander's complexities and wounds, you know, that fuel him.

17:52 And then you see him really take the most powerful position in the world.

17:57 That's a new ability.

17:59 You know, that's a new power that he has.

18:01 You know, and so I think the question that poses

18:04 is what is he going to do with that?

18:06 Yeah, it's like such a great question that the writers are always asking,

18:09 which is what happens when you have a diagnosable narcissist in power?

18:13 Who wants to be a world a world dictator?

18:16 Yeah.

18:17 Yeah.

18:17 Who likes milk?

18:21 [laughter] Mother's milk.

18:21 Uh-huh.

18:21 Yeah.

18:22 Mother's like The show has this habit of of of writing

18:26 something and then like something that's in our world, The Boys world,

18:30 and then kind of when it's airing or a little later

18:33 it kind of like weirdly comes to fruition in some way.

18:37 Uh I think it's just that's we're not like predicting the future or anything.

18:41 I just think it's that like the writers

18:43 are so great that they're tapping into something Yeah.

18:45 that's very true.

18:46 Like when I first read the script for the pilot of The Boys,

18:49 I did not think it was I didn't know that it was based off of a comic book.

18:52 I just thought someone wrote an incredible

18:54 script about America and inserted superheroes into it.

18:58 And I think that they just they keep

19:00 executing on that premise incredibly well season after season.

19:11 [music] [screaming] The ending of season 4 was such a big shocker for me,

19:24 at least, when I read it because especially for Kimiko,

19:27 you know, we go from the big kiss

19:29 scene that's backlit and beautiful with Frenchie and Kimiko.

19:33 And then she's kind of thrust back into the world of The Boys where it's

19:38 not so romantic and it's not so rose petals and happy ending and all of that.

19:43 In true Boys fashion, we kind of end on a tragic note.

19:47 That day was really special for me and the character

19:50 because it's the first time we see her actually speak.

19:54 And in the past it's always been a dream sequence or you know,

19:59 singing but never audible and real.

20:03 And I think it was an incredibly charged

20:07 moment and Kripke was the one directing it

20:11 and I I got really in my head about how I wanted the scene to play out

20:16 and initially I was croaking out the no

20:19 because I thought that's more grounded in reality

20:23 of someone that's been mute for years and years

20:26 and then suddenly she has the ability to speak.

20:29 And then Kripke was like just trust me.

20:31 I need you to scream it at the top of your lungs and I am so grateful

20:36 that he gave me that direction because everything crescendoing

20:39 into that point it really made the season finale.

20:44 It was such a funny day because I never knew Asa and Maggie's superpowers.

20:49 So when Asa was holding on to me I

20:51 had no idea how strong his character would be.

20:54 It took a few takes for me to understand

20:55 that they were like no no no you literally can't move.

20:58 He's very strong.

20:59 He's like the Hulk.

20:59 Yeah, it was a He grabs you and you're like get off of me.

21:02 I [laughter] was like I WAS LIKE I'M RUNNING TOWARDS FRENCHIE

21:05 NO MATTER WHAT and they're like no no no he's really strong.

21:08 [laughter] Yeah.

21:13 [music] So that throughout the entire season there was

21:19 this really cool metaphor that the writers lined up

21:22 for Annie which is she loses her she

21:26 doesn't lose her strength but she loses her power.

21:28 She loses her ability to blast people

21:30 and simultaneously that metaphor being she loses herself.

21:33 She loses her identity and then that ends up kind

21:36 of culminating and manifesting in this very amazing and cool storyline

21:41 they wrote for me that involved the shapeshifter and having

21:44 to take down the shapeshifter which she needed to literally take down.

21:48 She also needed to defeat this part of herself that really just

21:51 embodied the concept of perfect being the enemy of the good, right?

21:56 And so by the time the season ends right before Hughie's taken away

22:00 from her and she has to make this very very stark moment decision to leave him

22:06 to being captured so she can seize him and save him from the outside while

22:10 she's sitting next to him in the car and she's kind of found her self again.

22:13 She sees her powers coming back and she looks

22:15 at Hughie and she smiles at him and of course

22:17 in true boys fashion like seconds later wham they get

22:22 like hit by Cindy and then he's taken away from her.

22:25 It's this dichotomy, right?

22:27 Where she's been through this journey, she's found herself again,

22:29 she sees a flicker of her power and then everything that matters

22:33 to her in this moment seconds later is taken away from her.

22:37 So it leaves us in this place of like

22:39 okay well she's been through all this trauma,

22:40 she's figured out a way to metabolize it, she's figured out a way to find

22:43 the strength through yet another shitstorm of a season.

22:47 Will she be able to do that again?

22:49 And that's the major question or will she just become nihilistic?

22:52 All right everybody that's it from us and right now you

22:54 can catch the final season of The Boys on Prime Video.

22:57 Yeah.
