Pensando Inglés

0:00 Are you ready to learn some real life English with comprehensible input?

0:05 Well, good, because today we're going

0:08 to continue improving our English in the most

0:11 natural and fun way while we find out which one is better.

0:16 This is the Chicago dog.

0:18 This is the Colombian dog.

0:20 And today we are going to find out which country has the best hot dog.

0:27 All right, my friends.

0:29 Today we're going to continue improving our English with comprehensible input.

0:34 What is comprehensible input?

0:36 Comprehensible input is when a native speaker like me

0:40 speaks slowly and clearly so that you can understand.

0:45 Guys, today we have a fun video.

0:47 And we're going to have a showdown.

0:50 Do you know what a showdown is, wife?

0:54 No.

0:53 A showdown is like a fight, like a contest.

0:56 Okay?

0:56 It could be a game.

0:58 It could be a soccer game.

0:59 Okay.

1:00 Uh there's going to be a showdown between Argentina and Uruguay.

1:05 Okay.

1:06 Now, I know you guys down there don't call those countries that.

1:08 That's the American pronunciation of Agentina.

1:14 But a showdown is a contest.

1:16 Okay.

1:17 Today we're having a contest of hot dogs.

1:20 Okay.

1:21 Hot dogs are a very American food.

1:24 Later, we're going to talk about the history of hot dogs.

1:26 But the American hot dogs have a challenger because for the four

1:32 to five years that I've known my little beautiful Colombian wife,

1:37 she's been telling me hot dogs.

1:42 She's been telling me that the Colombian hot dogs are very good.

1:46 I don't know if I believe her, but today we're going to find out.

1:50 So, we're going to do something called a Chicago style hot dog.

1:54 Very American versus a Santander hot dog from Colombia.

1:59 So, guys, we are going to make two different

2:03 hot dogs from different ends of the American continent.

2:07 Let's find out which one is better.

2:09 I have so many ingredients and so many different things to do.

2:12 I'm confused.

2:14 I'm confused.

2:15 Ah, what do I do?

2:16 What do I do?

2:17 I don't know.

2:18 So, I guess we'll start with the sauce.

2:21 Okay, the American hot dog,

2:23 the Chicago style hot dog is going to be pretty easy.

2:26 I just put a bunch of stuff on it.

2:28 The Colombian hot dog, we have to make some sauces.

2:32 We have to put some special eggs on it.

2:35 We'll talk about those later.

2:37 First, let's get going with this sauce, which is called salsa tartar.

2:43 But my Colombian wife doesn't know how to make a Colombian sauce.

2:48 So, the American guy is going to try his best.

2:50 Now, Colombians, guys, you guys know I have a lot of love for you guys.

2:55 Do not attack me in the comments saying,

3:01 "Please, my friends, don't attack me down there, okay?

3:04 I'm going to try my best." So,

3:06 into our food processor food processor, we're going to put cilantro.

3:11 We're going to put some white onion.

3:14 We're going to put some red pepper.

3:16 And one of the recipes on Tik Tok said a little piece of carrot.

3:20 Colombians, please don't beat me up, guys.

3:22 I think it was a Colombian in the Tik Tok who did it.

3:25 I hope.

3:26 Or can you explain?

3:27 Can you explain that there's so many recipes for everything?

3:31 So, I tried to find the the good one, but So, guys, as my wife just mentioned,

3:37 maybe you couldn't hear her very well on the microphone.

3:40 There's 10,000 uncles and grandmas and aunts in Colombia.

3:46 Each one of them has their own recipe.

3:48 Okay?

3:49 Same thing with any of these dishes I make.

3:51 Your mom makes it different than your uncle.

3:55 And everybody's got their own version,

3:57 and everybody thinks that their version is right.

4:00 Okay?

4:00 There's a million different ways to make this.

4:02 This is how we're going to do it today and see if it's good.

4:06 Also, one clove of garlic and some relish, guys.

4:11 Relish is chopped up, pickles.

4:15 Okay, that's sweet.

4:16 No,

4:16 this is sweet relish and it's pickles and sugar

4:22 and a bunch of ingredients that are not good for you.

4:24 So, I'll put a spoon of sweet relish in.

4:29 Smells good.

4:30 I haven't eaten this in a long time, guys.

4:32 I was telling my wife earlier, I haven't eaten a hot dog in years.

4:36 I used to eat hot dogs, guys, when I had no money.

4:40 And that's actually a funny part of the history of the Chicago style dog.

4:45 It was developed in the Great Depression,

4:48 which was a very hard time in the United States where many people had no money.

4:53 So, I'll tell you guys the full story of that later,

4:55 but let's see if we can make some salsa tarta.

5:00 And then we also need some mayonnaise.

5:02 I'm hungry now.

5:03 All right, guys.

5:04 We're going to put this in our food processor over here.

5:08 See what happens.

5:09 I could add things.

5:10 I could take things.

5:10 Well, I can't take things away.

5:12 I could add more things.

5:13 I can make it thicker or thinner.

5:16 Let's see.

5:20 Okay, guys.

5:20 I don't know if this is proper salsa tarta,

5:24 but it tastes pretty delicious and it looks pretty good.

5:27 So the other sauce is what?

5:30 Salsa rosada.

5:31 And that's just mayonnaise and ketchup.

5:34 Let's make a salsa rosa.

5:36 So guys, also on the Colombian hot dogs, they often use uh pineapple sauce,

5:42 which is a sweet sauce made with pineapples and some other things,

5:46 but things with a lot of citrus, a lot of acid, like pineapple or lemon,

5:51 they give my wife a lot of uh acid reflux, especially now that she's pregnant.

5:56 So, we're not going to use that.

5:57 But that is a very, very common condiment

6:01 in Colombian hot dogs and I think even burgers, too.

6:04 Right, baby?

6:06 So, a condiment, guys, is like mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard,

6:11 anything that you put on food to give it flavor, we call condiments.

6:17 Super super popular in Colombia.

6:19 Then, salsa rosa.

6:22 So, we're going to put these in the refrigerator until we're ready.

6:26 And we still have a lot to do to get ready for the Colombian dogs.

6:31 So, I'll see you guys in just a second when I get

6:33 these put into the refrigerator or what most Americans would call the fridge.

6:38 All right, guys.

6:39 We have a lot to do.

6:40 Got some bacon cooking over here for the Colombian dogs.

6:44 And we have to boil some quail eggs.

6:47 And guys, quails are birds,

6:50 smaller birds that make smaller eggs than chickens do.

6:54 So, these are quail eggs.

6:55 These are hard to find.

6:56 We had to find a place that had them, but we did.

7:00 So, I'm going to hard boil these, cook them for about 4 minutes,

7:04 and these, believe it or not, go on the Colombian hot dogs.

7:08 Eggs on hot dogs?

7:10 I don't know.

7:11 I don't know, but we'll find out.

7:14 I think three on each one or four on each one.

7:16 Okay.

7:18 Okay.

7:18 Okay.

7:18 So, we're going to let those boil.

7:19 We've got our bacon cooking and we're going

7:22 to get our jumbo beef hot dogs cooking.

7:27 Now, jumbo is another word for big jumbo.

7:30 So, I'm going to have two.

7:32 I'm guessing Connor and camera wife will only eat one of these a piece.

7:36 Right.

7:36 We are going to boil these two.

7:39 You can cook them on the grill.

7:40 There's a bunch of ways you can make hot dogs.

7:43 Today, we're going to boil them.

7:46 So, while all of this is coming together,

7:48 I want to tell you guys a little bit of the history behind hot dogs,

7:52 how it became such a huge American,

7:56 huge piece of American culture, I would even say.

7:59 So, immigrants from Germany brought these big sausages over and they

8:05 hot dogs were originally called Frankfurters

8:08 because they come from Frankfurt, Germany.

8:10 They were these big sausages.

8:12 So the immigrants here in places like New York and Chicago,

8:16 they sold the food that they knew about their sausages.

8:20 Okay.

8:21 But due to the busy American lifestyle of always moving,

8:24 always being on the move,

8:26 they found a way to make it where you could eat these sausages while you walk.

8:31 Buns.

8:32 So guys, they started serving their sausages in these buns.

8:35 So you could eat them while you walk to work.

8:38 You could eat them at the baseball game while you watch baseball.

8:41 That's how the American hot dog came to be.

8:45 And I read something.

8:46 I don't know if it's true,

8:48 but they said that it got the name hot dogs because some Americans,

8:52 they thought that these big sausages look like the German dog breed Datson.

8:58 That's that.

8:59 And they're called wiener dogs.

9:02 So the name hot dog stuck and that's what they've been called ever since.

9:07 Now, the Chicago dog came to be in the Great Depression.

9:12 And the Great Depression, like I said,

9:14 was a time in the United States when all the businesses went out.

9:21 Everything bad was going on.

9:22 Nobody had money.

9:24 People thought the world was ending.

9:26 Okay?

9:27 Men were losing their jobs.

9:28 People were losing their homes.

9:30 It was a hard and terrible time.

9:32 So people started making food in a cheap way that would fill you up.

9:38 Okay?

9:39 So they started adding all these things to the hot

9:42 dog to make it feel like a meal.

9:44 They put pickles on it.

9:46 They put onions on it.

9:47 They put tomatoes on it.

9:49 It used to be called a garden dog,

9:51 by the way, because of all the vegetables on it.

9:54 But it was a cheap way to make a man feel like he

9:58 was having a meal even if he didn't have a lot of money.

10:01 And guys, in Chicago, these dogs, these Chicago style dogs are loved.

10:08 When you go to Chicago,

10:09 you'll see Chicago style Chicago style hot dog stands all over the place.

10:14 All the restaurants have their Chicago style dogs.

10:17 So, today we're going to celebrate a piece

10:19 of Chicago history and show you what it looks like.

10:22 All right, guys.

10:23 I'm going to finish cooking these things.

10:25 I'll show you the next step when we're putting it all together.

10:27 All right, guys.

10:28 We're getting to the end.

10:29 This is another part that I didn't mention of the Colombian dogs.

10:33 Sweet corn and mozzarella cheese.

10:36 Now, let's peel these eggs.

10:39 So, these eggs, from what I saw,

10:41 are a little bit harder to peel than chicken eggs, right?

10:44 Cuz they have a very thick shell.

10:46 Let's see.

10:47 I don't think so.

10:48 They're cute.

10:50 Yeah.

10:50 Cute little eggs, guys.

10:52 Oops.

10:53 And we're going to eat French fries, too.

10:55 Oh, and we're going to have some French fries, too,

10:57 which I'm sure everybody knows what that is, but it's just chopped up potatoes.

11:01 Here is a little quail egg.

11:03 Now, I have to peel five more of these.

11:05 I don't need to show you guys that.

11:07 It's just the same thing over and over.

11:09 Like I said, we're almost done.

11:11 Now, I'll show you when it's time to build these dogs.

11:14 All right, guys.

11:15 Look at all this stuff we have.

11:17 We've got our hot dogs ready.

11:19 These are just plain hot dogs right now.

11:22 Some people eat them like that.

11:24 Connor is eating one right now with just ketchup on it.

11:27 So, let's make these hot dogs.

11:29 First, we'll start with the Chicago style.

11:31 Let me see.

11:33 Make sure the official way to build it.

11:35 So, for first ingredient on the Chicago style, plain yellow mustard.

11:40 Just a little bit of yellow mustard.

11:42 Okay.

11:43 And some of the sweet relish.

11:45 Looks good already, guys.

11:47 Couple pieces of tomato.

11:49 One pickle.

11:51 A dill pickle specifically.

11:53 These are called sports peppers, guys.

11:55 I think they're like a little bit spicy, a little bit sweet.

12:01 Oh, they are a little spicy.

12:02 I tasted some on my tongue already.

12:04 Put three of these on there.

12:06 And that is the Chicago dog.

12:07 Oh, wait, wait, wait.

12:08 One thing, one thing.

12:10 Some celery salt sprinkled on top.

12:14 Celery.

12:14 Yeah.

12:14 That, my friends, is an authentic Chicago dog.

12:17 Oh, never ever put ketchup on a Chicago dog.

12:21 That is a sin in Chicago.

12:23 So if you're in Chicago, don't even ask for it.

12:25 All right.

12:26 Now, this Colombian style hot dog.

12:28 Is there any order, you think, or you should just do it?

12:32 The salsa.

12:33 The salsa's first, you think?

12:35 I don't know.

12:35 No, no, no, no, no.

12:36 Don't worry.

12:36 I got this.

12:38 Okay, guys.

12:38 We're going to start with some corn.

12:40 Colombians are screaming right now.

12:41 No, there is an order.

12:43 There is an order.

12:44 What are you doing?

12:45 So, we're just going to put this together,

12:48 do our best, and it's going to be great.

12:49 We're gonna take our quail eggs.

12:51 All right, we got our quail eggs.

12:53 We've got our corn.

12:55 Put a little bit of bacon on there.

12:56 And guys, I want to say if I'm doing it wrong, my wife told me, "No,

13:00 the eggs go on top for decoration." But I have

13:03 something in my head that I think is going to work.

13:06 Okay.

13:06 Now, a little bit of the salsa rosa, some of our salsa,

13:11 then on top, we have some crushed up potato chips.

13:16 So, that doesn't look good, baby.

13:17 I think that looks pretty good.

13:19 All right, guys.

13:19 This is Kyle's version of a Chicago dog and the Colombian hot dog.

13:25 Let's see how it is.

13:27 All right, guys.

13:28 Now, we're going to try.

13:29 Which one do you think looks better?

13:32 Uh,

13:32 that looks good.

13:33 Got to try the Chicago dog first.

13:34 Try it first.

13:35 I don't want that spicy.

13:37 They look very good.

13:39 I think the green the green on the hot dog Chicago style looks good.

13:43 You know, make it look like nicer.

13:46 Oh, I don't want the spicy.

13:48 All right, guys.

13:49 Chicago dog.

13:50 Delicious.

13:51 Uh, it's got a little bit of sweet from the relish,

13:54 the mustard, the pickles, the peppers.

13:56 To me, that's a very familiar taste.

13:58 I've eaten a lot of Chicago dogs in my life, living so close to Chicago.

14:02 Absolutely love it.

14:03 I want to see what my wife thinks.

14:08 I couldn't try everything.

14:10 It's hard.

14:11 I love his those two.

14:12 Yeah, it's really good.

14:13 The kind of sweet thing.

14:15 Mhm.

14:16 The relish.

14:17 Okay, I think maybe this needs a little bit more salsa tartar.

14:20 All right, guys.

14:20 Let's try this Colombian hot dog.

14:24 All right, guys.

14:25 Let me explain something real quick.

14:27 My wife is very sad about this hot dog right now.

14:30 Oh, we don't have the things they have in Colombia.

14:33 I said, "Baby, right now we're filming, so try and be happy." So, she's like,

14:40 "Can we just try it?" Yeah, I want to try.

14:42 Be positive.

14:43 Let me try before this one because Yeah.

14:44 I couldn't get the sauce.

14:46 this sausage on.

14:47 You try that and I'm going to eat my Chicago dog.

14:49 I'm going to tell you what I'm in Colia right now.

14:59 Mhm.

15:00 So, it is good.

15:01 Let me just try this bread.

15:04 It is good.

15:05 Yeah.

15:05 The flavor is like Colombian.

15:08 All right, guys.

15:08 Let me see how I like the Colombian hot dog.

15:11 No more the salsa.

15:14 Yummy.

15:14 Super yummy.

15:15 I like both,

15:17 but this one because the the sauce.

15:20 Guys, this hot dog is honestly super good.

15:22 The corn is sweet.

15:24 The sauce is a little bit sweet.

15:25 You get some salty.

15:27 Those eggs are delicious.

15:29 I might like this one better right now.

15:31 Really?

15:32 Oh, the salt from the bacon comes through.

15:34 Tastes great.

15:35 Some people use more cheese, like a lot like a camo is a layer

15:42 of cheese, which is very good, but again, it's not good for my stomach.

15:46 So, okay guys, we're going to eat our dinner

15:49 and then Connor has something he wants to show us.

15:52 So, see you guys in a minute.

15:56 Hello.

15:56 Okay, guys.

15:56 Connor is gonna show us this thing that he put together.

15:59 Let me say something real quick though, Blake.

16:02 Every month, Connor gets one of these boxes.

16:05 My sister buys these for him.

16:07 And what are these Crunch Lab boxes?

16:09 They're made by this guy named Mark Rover.

16:11 I don't know if any of you speak slowly and clearly.

16:14 Okay.

16:15 Okay.

16:15 I don't know if any of you guys know him,

16:18 but he helped in the making of the Mars rover, which helped us explore Mars.

16:24 So, this guy, that's him, right?

16:26 He's an engineer, guys, and he makes all these cool things.

16:29 And he makes these kits so that kids can

16:32 learn about engineering and science and build them, too.

16:35 And Connor is super good at building them.

16:39 Mhm.

16:38 Can you tell us about what this one is?

16:40 It sprays water.

16:42 It's a water gun.

16:43 Yeah.

16:44 Except you could fill it up with this giant water bottle.

16:47 Can you shoot a little bit into the shower?

16:49 Yeah.

16:49 Now, this little switch, as you can see, it's like setting.

16:52 So, yeah, I can put into like a shower mode or something.

16:55 So, let me just set it to normal mode.

16:58 Wow, super cool.

16:59 Okay, let me just change it back to the off setting.

17:02 Can I do it?

17:05 Sure.

17:04 All right, guys.

17:05 I'm going to shoot Connor now.

17:08 No.

17:09 Whoa.

17:09 Yeah.

17:09 Yeah.

17:09 You see that?

17:11 This ain't a settings thing.

17:13 It's a prank system.

17:16 So, what's a prank?

17:17 Like a joke pulling off on someone.

17:20 A prank is a joke that you pull on somebody.

17:23 So you turn this little thing and it

17:25 makes it to where it shoot who's pointing it.

17:28 So that's pretty cool, buddy.

17:29 Anything else you want to say?

17:30 Yeah, sure.

17:31 I think this thing is really cool.

17:33 Now, if you get one of these in Colia,

17:37 this makes the thing shoot backwards like you saw my dad.

17:42 But if you switch it to this, wait, what?

17:46 Kind of shooting water in the house.

17:48 Hold up.

17:49 Then it shoots the normal way.

17:51 Wait, what?

17:52 I thought this was the off setting.

17:54 Well, maybe it's the other way.

17:57 Okay.

17:56 Oh, yeah.

17:56 This is the off setting.

17:58 There you go.

17:59 All right, buddy.

18:00 Let's end this video.

18:01 Do you want to tell them about the super cool video we have coming up?

18:05 Oh, yeah.

18:06 Oh, guys, for those of you who stuck around to the very end,

18:10 I'm going to let you in on a secret.

18:13 We have a really cool video we're going to make soon.

18:16 What are we going to do, bud?

18:18 We're going to go to an aquarium.

18:23 And what's an aquarium?

18:24 A place where you get to look at all sorts of cool sea creatures and stuff.

18:29 Fish.

18:30 Mhm.

18:32 Sharks, urchins, crustations.

18:34 So guys, I don't want to say too much,

18:36 but I've been writing emails to a bunch of places,

18:39 and one of these places is going to give us access

18:42 and free tickets to record inside one of the coolest attractions in Chicago.

18:49 I can't wait.

18:51 Yeah.

18:51 How about you?

18:51 You excited, too?

18:52 All right, guys.

18:53 Thanks for watching.

18:54 Thanks for spending your time with us.

18:56 And we will see you in the next video.

18:59 That's
