Become Confident & Fluent in English (12 month plan)
Hey Lady! English Speaking Community
0:00 I'm excited to share this video with you.
0:02 I've got some seven reasons why you
0:06 will speak English fluently this time next year.
0:10 And if you don't believe me, let's talk about how you will become
0:15 a confident and fluent English speaker in twelve months.
0:19 And if you're saying Emma, a whole year, that is such a long time.
0:25 Twelve months is what it takes to become a confident, fluent English speaker.
0:30 And of course, it may be different depending
0:33 on what level you are now or importantly,
0:36 how much practice and experience you've already had speaking in English.
0:42 But if you do not feel fluent today and you definitely want to become fluent,
0:48 twelve months is a realistic time frame.
0:51 You need enough time to take action and gain experience.
0:56 Okay here are the seven reasons why you will be fluent in twelve months.
1:03 Ready?
1:04 Because you believe you can be.
1:07 You believe that you can and you will become a confident English speaker.
1:13 This time in twelve months, you will speak fluently.
1:17 You will not hesitate to speak up.
1:20 You will not be nervous about meeting
1:22 new people or intimidated by native speakers.
1:25 You'll work on your mindset,
1:28 you'll focus on ensuring you are fuelling your progress with the right
1:33 thoughts and the self-belief that you can and you will make this happen.
1:38 No matter how nervous or worried that you
1:42 feel about speaking in English today, it won't last.
1:46 And let me tell you how I know this.
1:49 What you have learned,
1:51 the English skills that you already have inside you right now,
1:55 today they are already enough to take action, to speak.
2:00 And simply doing that improves your ability
2:03 to speak so that next time you speak, you have more experience to draw on.
2:10 This experience reinforces that belief you have in yourself and in turn,
2:17 this builds confidence and confidence is what motivates
2:21 you to continue learning and to continue doing.
2:25 And this cycle is how you will continue
2:28 to build confidence and that fluency as an English speaker.
2:34 And my dear, because you believe that you have what it takes
2:39 this is the first reason why you will be fluent in twelve months.
2:45 The second is because you'll set clear
2:48 goals and create the roadmap to become fluent.
2:52 It's not as complicated as you might think.
2:55 What will you do to allocate time,
2:58 attention, energy and money towards your fluency goals?
3:03 I'm assuming that you're an adult, you have a job,
3:06 you have other people who rely on you for certain things.
3:10 You don't have the luxury of just dropping
3:14 everything to work solely on your fluency goal, right?
3:18 That's why allocating these essential resources is so important.
3:23 If you want to learn more about setting English goals,
3:26 I've got a great video about how to do that up here.
3:30 The third reason that you will be fluent in twelve months
3:34 is because you'll establish a practice routine that you follow consistently.
3:40 This means carving out time for speaking practice in addition
3:45 to the time that you put aside to study, to develop new skills,
3:50 to test them out and to reflect on your success
3:53 so that you can make changes where necessary.
3:57 Your routine should always be manageable.
4:00 Meaning that you can manage to do it amongst the other things that you
4:04 need to do every day and that you can maintain it throughout the entire year,
4:10 including when you're on holiday or when you
4:13 have a really busy period at work, okay?
4:16 At least four speaking opportunities each week and they
4:20 need to be at least fifteen minutes of conversation practice.
4:25 So look for these opportunities where you can make that happen regularly.
4:29 Invite your neighbour over for a coffee or go
4:32 with a colleague out for your lunch break.
4:34 Plan to meet a tutor or if you're
4:37 part of a speaking community, just like Hey Lady!
4:40 stick to a regular schedule of conversations.
4:43 Whatever your options are in your life,
4:45 find a way to make them a regular part of your routine.
4:49 You will speak English fluently and confidently in twelve months because you'll
4:55 listen to naturally spoken English daily and you'll work on your pronunciation.
5:01 Finding some regular English podcasts or listening
5:04 to an audiobook in English will help you to become fluent because this is
5:10 where you'll hear English as it's spoken naturally.
5:13 Now if this is difficult for you to do at first,
5:16 just make sure you have the transcript or the book with you
5:20 so that you can read and recognise the words as they're spoken.
5:24 But over time, especially as you get used to the host or the narrator's voice,
5:30 you'll become less reliant on the transcript and start
5:34 to recognise the words as they're spoken naturally.
5:37 And even better, you'll start to pronounce English
5:40 words in the same natural way when you speak.
5:44 I've left some suggested podcasts and books down in the comments but just
5:49 make sure that you listen to different English speakers and when you're ready,
5:54 shift to a podcast with multiple hosts where you'll get to hear the natural
6:00 dynamic of a conversation as it moves from one person to the next.
6:04 You will speak English fluently in twelve months because you'll surround
6:09 yourself with opportunities to speak English every day and you'll take them.
6:15 You'll intentionally put yourself into moments and situations
6:19 that allow you to speak English every day.
6:22 If you work in an English-speaking company or you
6:26 live in an English-speaking country okay, that's good!
6:30 But you still have to make these speaking opportunities happen.
6:34 Don't just wait around and let those English situations happen to you,
6:39 insert yourself into those situations and into those conversations
6:44 that you need to increase your speaking skills in.
6:47 You will be fluent in twelve months because you'll surround yourself
6:52 with other English learners who are working towards the same goal.
6:57 Do not underestimate the power of the people that you surround yourself
7:02 with who can relate to your experience and support you on your journey.
7:07 These people will inspire you,
7:10 they'll create English opportunities for you and they'll help
7:14 to lift your mood when you experience a setback.
7:18 And even more importantly,
7:20 if you are around people in your life who put you down,
7:25 who tell you that you can't, who reinforce those negative self-beliefs,
7:31 you need to intentionally move away from them.
7:34 You need to create some distance between you and them.
7:38 You may not be able to create physical distance between these people,
7:42 they might be a family member or a colleague
7:45 that you see regularly so in this case,
7:48 you need to create some mental distance between you.
7:52 Do not engage with their negativity.
7:55 These people will not help you to become that confident, fluent English speaker.
8:02 You will be fluent this time next year because you will seek
8:07 feedback to help you improve but you will not just get that feedback,
8:12 you will implement it.
8:14 This could mean working with a tutor to target
8:17 specific aspects of your fluency that you want to improve.
8:20 It could mean attending an English class or a speaking program where
8:25 you're able to get real time
8:27 feedback on your participation during English conversations.
8:31 It can mean asking direct questions to the English speakers
8:35 around you just to find out how you can improve.
8:39 You could ask a colleague at work who's seen
8:42 you being introduced to new people in the office.
8:45 In your opinion, what is one thing I can do to improve
8:50 my ability to connect with new people I meet at work?
8:53 This question is clear,
8:55 it signals to them that you're looking for and you're open to suggestions.
9:00 But you'll also receive indirect feedback
9:03 at every English interaction that you have.
9:07 Feedback happens around you all the time.
9:10 If someone misunderstands your meaning,
9:13 you know because they give you an answer that you weren't expecting.
9:17 So you've received some feedback.
9:19 Reflect on what happened.
9:21 Could you have been clearer?
9:23 Could you have said it differently?
9:25 Looking for and creating opportunities to receive direct and indirect feedback
9:31 on your spoken English is essential and reflecting on what worked and how
9:37 you can improve in a learning journal will help to amplify your results
9:42 and help you to record and to see your progress over time.
9:48 You've got this!
9:49 Fluent, confident English is so, so possible for you.
9:54 It's just a matter of doing the things that may
9:58 seem hard or they may seem impossible right now.
10:02 It's just about getting started and that's why I'm here,
