1:02 And when somebody asks me why did they

1:05 get cancer at whatever age they're at, you know,

1:08 like I try to have a compassionate response to them.

1:10 And you certainly don't want to make people feel like they're to blame.

1:14 uh but you know as a researcher when I when I'm when I'm

1:17 done with that individual patient on my I'm walking by myself I started

1:21 to ask the question why don't we get cancer more often and in fact

1:24 we actually do get cancer all the time and get getting cancer means

1:28 normal cells that are dividing copying and pasting which is why we're still

1:33 around today from yesterday and we'll still

1:35 be around tomorrow makes mistakes and when

1:37 you have those mistakes you have mutations and mutations really are the kind

1:40 of the the the bud the foundational bud developing a cancer in the future.

1:45 So, an interesting thing that has been worked on is

1:49 how many DNA mistakes does a typical person adult make?

1:54 The answer is 10,000 mistakes are made every 24 hours.

1:59 So in theory, we're actually um we actually are laying

2:03 track for these little microscopic abnormalities that can turn into cancers,

2:08 but they don't turn into cancers,

2:09 most of them, because we actually have defenses in the body,

2:12 like our immune system,

2:14 uh like our ability to prevent blood vessels from growing into them.

2:17 We've got lots of hardwired mechanisms that prevent cancer.

2:21 So people who wind up dying from non-cancer causes

2:25 get an autopsy to figure out what actually happened.

2:28 and they're, you know, in an autopsy, you look at every tissue, uh, pathologist,

2:32 a specialist in looking at tissues, you know, uh,

2:35 either in life or death, and some startling statistics appear.

2:40 So, it turns out that between the ages of 40 and 50,

2:45 autopsy studies of women show that about uh,

2:49 40% of women actually already have breast cancer,

2:51 microscopic breast cancers that are far lower

2:55 than what you would be diagnosed with.

2:57 And most of those women are not going to go on to develop breast cancer.

3:00 It's just that you if you look for them, you might find them.

3:03 So something about the environment of the breast, the micro environment,

3:07 and then lifestyle can actually take something that could be

3:09 harmful that actually doesn't wind up being harmful for men.

3:14 Uh between the ages of 50 and 60, 50% of men have prostate cancers.

3:18 silent cancers in the prostate won't ever most likely won't ever become

3:22 a prostate cancer that's going to kill you or be dangerous, but they're there.

3:27 And then, you know, in people who are 70 and older,

3:30 almost 100% of people will have thyroid cancers, microscopic thyroid cancer.

3:36 So, what I'm trying to uh communicate is that cancer

3:41 is not the disease we always thought it was.

3:44 like you know we are it's like being jumped

3:46 in an alleyway you know like where all of a sudden

3:49 you were just by yourself and all of a sudden

3:51 you know somebody springs out and grabs you.

3:54 Not like that.

3:54 It's it's this this uh long development with a lot

3:57 of complicated things going on in your body.

4:00 Uh genetics playing only part of the role that we used to think about.

4:04 Uh and now we're beginning to really explore lifestyle choices,

4:09 uh cumulative exposures, and you know, that's probably in that bag,

4:15 that black box is where we're going to find some of the answers

4:18 to the younger the trend of having cancers being diagnosed at a younger age.

4:23 So, soy, great source of dietary protein, plant-based food,

4:27 got dietary fiber in it, uh, and it's got bioactives that are isoflavones,

4:34 uh, of which one of those isoflavones,

4:35 a class of chemicals, actually is a plant-based phytoestrogen.

4:39 And well-intentioned people who once heard that some

4:44 forms of human breast cancer are sensitive to human

4:47 estrogen naturally made the connection that maybe soy would

4:51 be harmful to eat because it's got a phytoestrogen.

4:54 But if you're a researcher like me and you

4:57 know something about chemistry and you were to call up

4:59 onto a screen or a book or do a Google

5:01 search and look for human estrogen and look at phytoestrogen,

5:05 just even look at the chemical structures, they look nothing alike.

5:08 And in fact, what is true is that plant estrogens,

5:12 phytoestrogens from soy don't actually mimic human estrogen.

5:16 It blocks human estrogen.

5:18 It's kind of mother nature's tmoxifen, which was designed,

5:21 a drug designed to block human estrogen.

5:23 So, the real question is whether or not soy is a good cancer fighter.

5:27 Yes, it blocks human estrogen for estrogen responsive cancers.

5:31 Number one.

5:31 Number two, these phytoestrogens, one of them is called genestine.

5:36 I've done research on this.

5:37 Potently starves cancer by cutting off the blood supply.

5:41 So now you're boosting your body's own ability

5:43 to starve a cancer so it can't grow.

5:46 Now, if you're a skeptic, you might say, "Prove it to me.

5:48 I know no woman is going to want to eat

5:51 tofu or drink soy milk." Just on an anecdote.

5:55 Well, how about this?

5:57 A study called the Shanghai Breast Cancer Study looked at 5,000

6:00 women who are at the highest risk for breast cancer.

6:04 Why?

6:05 because they already have breast cancer, super high risk.

6:07 Okay?

6:08 And it found that those women who consumed the most soy,

6:13 about a cup of soy milk a day, 10 grams of soy protein a day,

6:16 had a 30% decreased risk of dying of their breast cancer.

6:21 That's mortality.

6:21 So, the complete opposite of the fear factor is the empowerment factor.

6:26 This actually lowers death.

6:27 Now, for those women who already had their breast

6:29 cancer successfully treated and don't want it to come back,

6:33 that there were some women in this study had that.

6:35 Those women who had more soy also had a 20

6:38 to 30% less chance of having their cancer recur.

6:41 That's secondary prevention.

6:43 Social media is filled with skeptics out there.

6:45 Um they're like, "Well, you just you just cherrypicked this one study.

6:48 What about the study?" Well,

6:49 I could name 14 consecutive studies looking at soy intake and breast cancer.

6:55 And in every single case, higher consumption of soy did not increase mortality.

7:02 Rather, higher consumption of soy decreased mortality,

7:06 decreased the risk of death.

7:08 14 consecutive studies.

7:09 Tomatoes are an incredible source of an anti-inflammatory bioactive vitamin C.

7:15 Great for hydration.

7:17 They are packed with carotenoids that are very

7:20 important and useful for healthy aging, healthy vision.

7:23 And one of those carotenoids, natural compound called lycopine has been studied

7:29 and it has a powerful cancer starving effect.

7:32 This was studied in men.

7:33 So we earlier we talked about women in soy.

7:35 Let's talk about men and tomatoes.

7:38 There was the Harvard study called the health professionals follow-up

7:41 follow-on study looked at 36,000 plus men over two decades.

7:46 I'm talking about a long study and they looked as in these large studies

7:50 for consumption of specific foods and and to see

7:53 about any association with particular diseases.

7:56 Well, we've known for years that lycopine

7:59 can cut off the blood supply feeding cancer.

8:01 And so they looked at lycopine intake and prostate

8:03 cancer and found that those men in this study who

8:07 had two to three servings of cooked tomatoes per

8:11 week had a 30% decreased risk of developing prostate cancer.

8:16 And don't forget the vitamin C antioxidant lowers inflammation.

8:20 All beneficial as well.

8:21 Now the other thing that's interesting is if only 30% lower risk.

8:25 Some people did develop prostate cancer.

8:27 They dug into those people as well.

8:29 those people who ate more cooked tomatoes

8:32 and had prostate cancer had less aggressive,

8:34 less vascularized, less blood vessel-fed cancers.

8:38 So, it's a pretty tight connection between eating

8:42 tomatoes and a lower risk of prostate cancer.

8:45 You want to make the tomato work better, you combine it with extra virgin olive

8:48 oil because the lycopine dissolves in oil.

8:51 And so, that's why when you actually slow simmer a tomato sauce,

8:55 you wind up getting more lycopine into your bloodstream.

8:57 Apple a day supposed to keep it the doctor away.

8:59 Turns out that there is a potent

9:02 bioactive polyphenol in apples called chlorogenic acid.

9:06 It is a super potent anti-inflammatory substance found in the flesh

9:11 of apples that when we eat it um really helps to lower

9:15 our inflammatory biomarkers and the fiber in apple feeds our gut microbiome

9:20 which then produces the short- chain

9:22 fatty acids that further lowers inflammation.

9:25 I love berries, right?

9:26 So berries is not one food.

9:27 It's really a diverse uh bandelier of foods.

9:31 Blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, all of them are colorful.

9:35 And the color that the common denominator natural dyes are anthocyanins

9:40 in many of the berries including linganberries and all these gooseberries.

9:45 And anthocyanins tame blood vessels to make

9:48 them healthier because good for cardiovascular,

9:50 but they also cut off the blood supply to cancers.

9:53 They're also um incredible antioxidants to protect DNA from damage.

9:58 Uh and also there are fiber in berries

10:02 like most people don't know this but raspberry

10:05 which you know you get a handful of raspberries you wash them off they're

10:09 hollow they almost float almost like lightweight

10:12 like airy they are poundfor-pound the most fiber

10:16 richch berry food out there and it

10:19 feeds the gut microbiome which then lowers inflammation.

10:21 Think about these individual microscopic cancers as seeds.

10:25 They're not good seeds, they're bad seeds, and they're sitting in soil.

10:29 So, the seed in a soil patch its idea of cancer living in its own fertile soil.

10:36 And what happens around the soil can affect the growth of the seed.

10:41 So, inflammation is basically feeding the seed.

10:45 It's watering and fertilizing the seed, the bad seed,

10:49 in a way that allows it to begin sprouting roots,

10:52 establishing itself, and growing into what you don't want it to grow into.

10:56 Now, remember, inflammation is actually normal and healthy.

11:00 So, it's the chronic inflammation that's actually stoking the growth.

11:03 What does it do to the seed?

11:05 Why does inflammation do that?

11:06 So, this seed is always trying to establish

11:09 itself by releasing fert its own fertilizer.

11:12 They call them growth factors.

11:13 They're peptides and proteins.

11:14 And you know, right now in the whole biohacker longevity space,

11:18 there's like a big enthusiasm about peptides.

11:21 Well, I can tell you because I study peptides, growth factors, they're hormones,

11:26 and they're um signals that one cell produces that triggers a cellular

11:31 signal with another cell to tell the other cell to do something.

11:34 And and so too, cancers also release these growth factors at a low level.

11:39 You put inflammation around that seed, that bad seed,

11:43 and suddenly the inflammation enables the microscopic

11:47 cancer to produce more growth factors.

11:50 And in fact, indeed,

11:51 the inflammatory cells that will start to gather around kind

11:54 of like hover around this little tiny dormant cancer once harmless,

12:00 the inflammatory cells themselves will dump more cytoines, growth factors.

12:04 Now, we remember cytoines from the COVID era.

12:06 They cause inflammation.

12:07 and they cause all kinds of stress reactions.

12:10 Now you're dumping this around the cancer.

12:12 All right, your normal cells don't like it.

12:14 They're like, you know what?

12:15 This is not comfortable for me.

12:17 But the cancer is like, bring it on, baby.

12:19 I want to I want to get these growth factors.

12:21 Thank you for the fertilizer.

12:23 Now it's time for me to take off.

12:25 We all have been out hopefully to enjoy beautiful weather under the sun.

12:29 You get a sunburn.

12:30 You get inflammation.

12:31 We know the skin gets red, blisters, it's terrible.

12:35 That's inflammation.

12:36 You do that over and over and over again.

12:38 That radiation from the sun is mutating the cells.

12:42 You keep on burning yourself.

12:43 You're setting out inflammation.

12:44 That's how um a small microscopic abnormal skin cell that turns

12:49 cancerous can suddenly become a melanoma or a non-melanoma skin cancer.

12:53 So that's an example of where normal goes to abnormal.

12:56 Uh non-inflamed goes to inflamed and boom,

12:59 it's like pulling a trigger to force it to stoke it to go into cancer.

13:03 Let's give another couple of examples that but people might understand.

13:06 You know people who drink a lot of alcohol can have acid reflux.

13:12 Um alcohol can relax the sphincter at the end

13:14 of our esophagus relaxing the opening to the stomach

13:18 and uh acid can stomach acid can splash up

13:21 and you can wind up having uh esophagus burns.

13:24 All right.

13:25 Uh esophagitis is what we call it.

13:27 It's a severe form of heartburn.

13:30 Once in a while, you know, if we have it,

13:32 we all have heartburn every now and then, not a big deal.

13:35 You drink a lot of alcohol and you wind up having a lot of heartburn over time,

13:39 you wind up having chronic inflammation in your esophagus.

13:43 And because the stomach acid can cause an injury and damage and cause mutations,

13:48 now you've got normal esophagus going to uh abnormal the splash.

13:53 Now you've got non-inflamed to inflamed and that can trigger

13:56 off the growth of esophageal cancer or esophageal stomach cancer.
