IELTS Band 7+ Vocabulary Lesson 1: Family
IELTS Master
0:00 hello and welcome to this ielt master
0:03 band 7 plus vocabulary lesson this
0:07 lesson is lesson one and it's on family
0:11 so let's get started let's talk about
0:14 the structure for this vocabulary
0:17 course My Philosophy is that in order to
0:22 really learn vocabulary you need to know
0:25 words in a deep
0:27 way so in this lesson I've given you
0:31 definitions with notes and example
0:36 sentences collocations and collocation
0:39 is a new word possibly it means words
0:43 that go together often and finally an action step to end
0:48 each lesson so each lesson in this
0:52 vocabulary course will have words with
0:56 definitions notes and example
0:58 sentences a cocation chart or picture
1:02 for these words and at the end of each
1:05 lesson there will be an action
1:08 step so let's take a look at the words
1:11 for this lesson now again the theme is
1:16 family for this lesson the words are
1:20 sibling relative adolescence nurture and
1:28 relationship you might know some of
1:30 these words already but the chances are
1:36 that you will learn some new
1:37 combinations or collocations with these
1:40 words or maybe a new example sentence
1:44 that uses the word in a way you didn't
1:47 know or you hadn't thought of
1:50 before let's look at word number one
1:53 sibling the definition is a brother or
1:57 sister this is quite simple right
2:01 sibling as is noted is often used
2:05 instead of brother or sister in writing
2:09 it's also used that way in
2:12 speech Let's Take a look at some example
2:15 sentences first siblings can have a
2:18 profound impact on a child's
2:23 life so brothers and sisters can have a
2:26 profound impact on a child's life and
2:29 profound means big I didn't have any siblings growing
2:34 up so I learned to be
2:38 independent this might be a sentence you
2:40 say during an ielt speaking interview
2:43 and last in China One of the effects of
2:47 the one child policy was that many
2:50 children grew up without a
2:53 sibling so we use siblings with an s in
2:57 the first two sentences but we can also
2:59 use it it like in the last sentence with
3:02 a meaning one sibling one brother or one
3:06 sister next let's look at
3:10 collocations to get started easy we
3:13 chose a word like sibling that doesn't
3:16 have a lot of
3:18 collocations what does collocation mean
3:20 collocation means a word or words that
3:24 go together often sibling rivalry is a
3:29 common collocation that means you'll see
3:32 these two words together sibling and
3:35 rivalry what does sibling rivalry mean
3:39 well when you have a brother or
3:42 sister that like to compete with each
3:45 other in lots of different things maybe
3:48 in sports maybe in eating food at the
3:51 dinner table maybe in business or just
3:55 something in life when they always like
3:57 to compete with each other then it's a
4:00 sibling rivalry got it great let's
4:06 continue next is relative a relative is a person in the
4:12 same family or a family
4:15 member and some example
4:18 sentences with the rise of nuclear
4:21 families the amount of time spent with
4:24 extended relatives has decreased so we have nuclear families
4:31 this is like the parents and the
4:32 children and then extended relatives
4:35 extended relatives would be relatives
4:38 like aunts and uncles and cousins maybe
4:43 grandparents the next sentence is when I
4:46 was younger I used to spend a lot of
4:49 time with my relatives while my parents
4:51 were away on business in this sentence we use
4:56 relatives to say not parents but
5:01 family and last hiring relatives can
5:06 create family problems if there are
5:08 difficulties at work and let's look at some cations wow
5:14 here we have six different
5:16 collocations now there are many many
5:18 more collocations for each word but for
5:21 this course I've chosen six of the most
5:24 common collocations for this
5:28 word first is care for relative okay to care
5:34 for for example on weekends I go to the hospital
5:40 to care for my
5:42 relatives just like you could say
5:44 grandparents or aunt and uncle to care
5:47 for your relatives next is other
5:50 relatives I have my brother and sister
5:53 and then I have other relatives that
5:55 live in the house as
5:56 well distant relatives distant relatives are your family
6:03 members that are far away from you not
6:07 in terms of how far away in your country
6:10 they are but from you in your family so
6:14 for example my mother's cousin son could
6:17 be an example of a distant relative on
6:20 the other side close relative a close
6:24 relative is someone that you have a
6:26 close relationship with that's in your
6:28 family elderly relative someone who is
6:32 older and your relative and finally
6:34 visit relatives now this is a common
6:37 cocation it's common to
6:39 say next year I'm going to visit my
6:42 relatives in Europe or something like
6:45 that number three adolescence
6:50 adolescence the definition of
6:52 adolescence is the period between
6:55 childhood and adulthood and
7:00 this means the teenage years so if you
7:02 look at the note if we have adolescents
7:05 with a t and an s or adolescent without
7:09 the S it basically means teenager so
7:13 think 13 to about 19 years old could be
7:18 adolescence let's say that one more time
7:20 because it's a little bit difficult
7:24 adolescence and example sentences adolesence can be a difficult
7:30 time both for the child and the parent
7:34 very true in regards to prison sentences I
7:38 believe that adolescents should be
7:41 treated the same way as adults and note
7:46 change CE at the end of the word to TS
7:50 to describe people not the period of
7:53 time so the first example sentence is
7:56 the period of time and the second
7:58 example senten is is the person or the
8:02 people collocations for adolescence well
8:05 we have early adolescence early adolescence is like 13
8:11 14 15 years old during
8:14 adolescence and childhood and
8:17 Adolescence adolescence is a good
8:19 comparison word for childhood you have childhood adolescence
8:27 adulthood next nurture definition of nurture is to help
8:34 someone or something develop and grow
8:37 and you can see the picture of the
8:39 person nurturing the plant on the top
8:43 right also note the adjective form of
8:47 nurture is nurturing so let's look at some example
8:53 sentences first nature versus nurture is
8:57 a common topic among scientists
9:00 it discusses whether a person's life is
9:03 mostly from his DNA nature or from life
9:08 experiences and his environment
9:11 nurture so this is an interesting
9:13 sentence and an interesting topic if
9:16 you're interested in this copy or type
9:19 in nature versus nurture into Google or
9:22 another search engine and take a
9:27 look next sentence growing up in a healthy and nurturing
9:33 environment can prepare children for
9:35 future success here we're using nurture
9:39 in its adjective form nurturing next to
9:44 environment collocations we have nurture by someone
9:52 or nurture bu something and to nurture Talent so if a
9:59 child is talented perhaps a coach will nurture
10:04 their talent and help them become better
10:08 at what they're doing and nurture by
10:12 someone for example the child was
10:15 nurtured by their coach for many
10:20 years number five relationship the definition of
10:25 relationship is the way in which two
10:28 people group groups or countries behave
10:32 towards each other or deal with each
10:34 other and it says two people but really
10:36 a relationship can be more than two
10:39 people and some example
10:42 sentences I have a good working
10:44 relationship with my boss maintaining a strong relationship
10:51 with your friends becomes more difficult
10:54 later in life the relationship between the police
10:59 and local community has
11:02 improved now of course you probably know
11:05 relationship the interesting thing about
11:07 relationship is the collocations first we have relationship
11:15 between for example a relationship
11:18 between two people relationship with for example a
11:24 relationship with your parents a
11:27 relationship with your family or with
11:30 your boss next establish a relationship
11:35 this means to make a relationship to
11:37 create a relationship next a close relationship
11:42 up on the top right a close relationship
11:45 you have a good a strong a close
11:47 relationship with a person next a
11:51 personal relationship personal relationship usually Compares with work
11:58 relationship so if you develop a
12:01 personal relationship with someone then
12:04 maybe you have a friendship with them
12:08 and last a special relationship I think
12:11 you understand what this one
12:13 means so that's the five words for this
12:18 lesson your action step for today is to
12:21 use each word to write two sentences and
12:24 post your sentences in the comments
12:27 below be sure to use the collocations
12:30 that I introduced whenever you can it's
12:33 good practice to use these collocations
12:36 so that you can remember them and truly
12:38 deeply understand these words when it
12:40 comes to your IELTS test your speaking
