0:42 are uh quite busy, but that's okay.

1:54 So, to get started changing the sheets, I have to have a couple things.

1:57 I have to have some clean sheets prepared.

2:01 And I also need a laundry basket.

2:05 This is where we're going to put the dirty sheets.

2:08 They're not really that dirty, but you know what?

2:11 It's a good idea to change your sheets every now and then,

2:14 and it's something that I put off.

2:17 I should do it probably every other week.

2:20 That's the goal.

2:21 But I put it off except for today.

2:24 In today's lesson, I am not putting it off anymore.

2:27 This is for you.

2:29 So, the first thing that we need to do is we need to strip the bed.

2:35 You could say simply take off the old sheets, but we often use this word strip.

2:42 I'm going to strip or strip off this quilt.

2:48 I'm going to strip off this comforter.

2:54 It's actually a duvet comforter.

2:55 You can put a duvet cover over top of it, but I just call it a comforter.

3:00 And I'm going to take off this sheet.

3:04 I will explain all about these sheets in just a minute.

3:06 Now, this I'm going to wash.

3:08 So, I will put it in my laundry basket.

3:12 I'm going to also take these pillows.

3:19 And you might ask, why do you have so many pillows?

3:22 Are there Why are there four pillows?

3:26 Well, why would I live in a world where I

3:29 just need one pillow when I can have two pillows?

3:32 Right?

3:33 So, these are not decorative pillows.

3:36 Some people have decorative pillows um on their bed.

3:39 I'm not that kind of person.

3:41 Um, but I like to have one pillow under my head and sometimes I hug a pillow.

3:48 Sometimes I have that pillow for back support.

3:52 We call that lumbar support sometimes when I'm sleeping.

3:55 And I'm going to throw the pillowcases in the laundry basket.

4:01 Um, let me know.

4:02 Are you someone who sleeps with more than one pillow?

4:08 I definitely am.

4:09 And I feel grateful that I live in a world where I can sleep comfortably, right?

4:16 Uh so let's take all these off.

4:18 As you can see, I am not a stickler for matching sheets or matching pillowcases.

4:27 So these are a matching set.

4:29 You can see um I think you can see a little bit that these are matching.

4:34 They have little polka dots on them.

4:37 But really, whenever I do the sheets, I just grab whatever sheets are clean,

4:41 whatever pillowcases are clean, and that's what I put on the bed.

4:47 Some people are pickier than me, but I am not.

4:50 All right, so next we need to take off the uh fitted sheet.

4:57 So, this sheet has elastic, and I'm going to take off this fitted fitted sheet.

5:04 I need to go all the way around the bed and not trip trip over things.

5:10 So, I will take off this fitted sheet.

5:12 This is the one that is annoying to put on.

5:16 Some fitted sheets don't actually fit a bed very well.

5:21 But this one, this one seems to fit.

5:24 Okay.

5:25 So, I'm going to take off this fitted sheet.

5:28 And the next thing is I need to find

5:33 the new clean fitted sheet somewhere in here.

5:37 Note that the pronunciation of this fitted,

5:40 those T's are going to sound like D's

5:42 in American English because they're surrounded by vowels.

5:47 Fitted, not fitted.

5:50 Fitted.

5:51 Fitted.

5:52 That's one of the tricks that makes spoken English

5:55 sound so fast because we change one letter for another.

5:58 One word kind of blends into the next

6:01 word because of all those little tips and tricks.

6:03 All right, this is my clean fitted sheet.

6:07 I have two pairs of fitted sheets for this bed,

6:11 which means one of them can be dirty and the other can be clean and I

6:15 don't need to do the laundry in order to have a clean set of sheets.

6:20 So, that's generally the term that we would use.

6:22 This is a set of sheets, the matching set.

6:26 This is not a matching set.

6:27 I don't care.

6:28 Um, but I'm going to put this on my bed.

6:33 And you're going to see there's an inside and an outside.

6:39 And I have to figure out which side is

6:42 the long side and which side is the short side.

6:46 I think that's a problem everybody has when they make

6:50 the bed with this type of uh with these types of sheets.

6:54 All right, I'm going to tuck it in around here and oh, I did it wrong.

7:02 I have the long side here.

7:04 So, what I'm going to do pull that off and find this corner.

7:13 So, this is the corner of the sheet.

7:15 I'm going to try to tuck it under the mattress and back here as well.

7:23 I'm going to tuck this corner around the mattress.

7:29 And usually the truth is when I make the bed,

7:33 I have at least one child very excited that there is a big flat

7:37 jumping surface available and somebody is jumping

7:42 on the bed while I'm doing this.

7:44 But I sent everybody outside while I was making this video for you.

7:50 All right, so I'll get this one tucked in.

7:54 And you might see we have this lovely patch.

7:59 I sewed on this patch because I love these sheets.

8:03 They're so comfortable.

8:04 I think they're like linen sheets.

8:06 They're really nice.

8:07 They're a little wrinkly, but it's okay.

8:10 And but they got a rip in them.

8:13 Sometimes natural fibers just aren't as durable

8:17 as like polyester or more like man-made materials.

8:22 So these linen sheets, they're just not very durable.

8:26 But I didn't want to throw them away.

8:28 I wanted to try to fix them myself.

8:34 So I cut I had a piece of extra fabric.

8:38 You can see from these sheets.

8:40 There was like an extra little square,

8:43 a little like bag that these sheets came in.

8:46 And I had saved that.

8:48 And I cut that little bag.

8:50 It was not a bag to use to carry stuff.

8:52 It was just to stuff the sheets in when you buy it.

8:55 And I sewed it onto the hole.

9:00 And now there's a nice little patch there.

9:02 And we can use these sheets again.

9:04 Hooray.

9:06 All right.

9:06 Now that we have the fitted sheet on, let's get the flat sheet.

9:11 That's what this guy is called.

9:13 And there is a top and a bottom.

9:16 You can see there is a thicker seam here to here.

9:23 This is the seam.

9:26 This is a thin seam right here.

9:30 But this thick seam is gonna go at the top ideally.

9:37 So I'm going to just toss this across

9:42 the bed and make sure that it's relatively even.

9:52 We don't want to let Dan have all the sheets, right?

9:55 I got to have some sheets, too, on my side.

9:58 All right, that is good enough for me.

10:01 Usually, I'll tuck the corners in so that they don't get messed up too much.

10:10 My kids love to hide under my sheets and they play in the blankets,

10:17 which means that often times all of my sheets and blankets end up on the floor.

10:23 Maybe it's just fool hearty to think that if I

10:25 tuck the corner of my sheet in, they'll stay in place.

10:29 Yeah, I'm probably fooling myself, but that's the way it goes.

10:34 All right.

10:35 Next, I'm going to add this duvet cover.

10:37 Because there's a tag,

10:39 I try to keep that at the bottom of the bed so that it's not in our faces.

10:49 And this one pull up like this.

10:55 And this quilt I'm going to just throw on.

11:02 Now, this quilt is not a special homemade quilt.

11:08 We do have a quilt that Dan's greatg grandmother

11:11 sewed and we often use that on our bed.

11:14 I did not bring it out for this video.

11:17 Um, but it that's a very special quilt.

11:20 Um, you can tell you can tell it's a quilt,

11:23 not just a blanket, because it has these little squares.

11:27 And this is just from a company.

11:32 Nothing very personal,

11:33 but it still has the squares of fabric that have been sewn together.

11:38 And in older times, people would save patches

11:44 of their fabric of their clothing after their clothing

11:47 um got old and they would make blankets out

11:50 of it because you had to reuse things more.

11:53 Um I tried to be thrifty as well, but I don't think I could ever make a quilt

12:00 unless I really needed to, unless it was a necessity.

12:04 Um all right, here we go.

12:06 And next we have our assorted pillow cases.

12:11 And I'm going to put a couple on.

12:15 It's interesting.

12:16 Some pillowcases, I don't know if it's the same in your country,

12:19 some pillowcases have this little flap here to keep the pillow in.

12:26 And some pillow cases are just a little opening

12:31 and you have to shove the pillowcase or the pillow in.

12:35 This one has a little flap, but it maybe keeps the pillow in better.

12:41 I'm not sure.

12:42 All right, let's see if I can shove it in a little bit better.

12:49 And I know this is Dan's pillow.

12:54 So, that's going to go up there.

12:58 This pillow is mine.

13:03 And I'm going to put the pillowcase on this as well.

13:07 There is a tag on the pillow, so technically maybe some people would put

13:12 that at the very end, but I don't care.

13:15 Like I said, this is my least favorite chore.

13:18 You see how cool this is?

13:20 There's like a little flap and then you can pull up

13:23 that piece so that it stays nice and tucked in there.

13:28 Great.

13:30 All right.

13:30 Now, here's the choice.

13:33 I can give my second pillow the same color as my first pillow.

13:39 Let's do it.

13:40 Let's just be sensible, won't we?

13:43 Um, I think this pillow case is actually from another set.

13:46 It doesn't belong with the linen blue sheets,

13:50 but it's still blue, so that's all right.

13:54 That's what matters to me.

13:55 Now, what's worse than doing the sheets on my bed

13:58 is doing the sheets on my kids' bed.

14:01 That's the warmest.

14:03 They have a bunk bed and they like to sleep with a lot of stuffed animals.

14:10 So, I have them take off all of the stuffed animals from their bed

14:16 and I ask them to take the sheets off their bed to strip their beds.

14:22 But it's kind of hard for them at this age, young age,

14:25 to put their own sheets back on the bed, especially that fitted sheet.

14:31 So, I'd have to do that.

14:33 I don't know.

14:34 It's just a chore I don't like.

14:35 It's not a big deal, but you know,

14:37 there's always there's always chores that we don't like,

14:40 even though they're not a big deal.

14:42 And then, tada, whenever you do them and they're finished, it feels good.

14:49 I feel good right now.

14:50 Have you ever had that happen where you have

14:52 a chore or a phone call you have to make

14:55 and you're just dreading it and then you do it

14:59 and it wasn't actually that bad in the first place?

15:03 This ish the same for me all the time.

16:52 And this quilt is not the fuzziest or the warmest thing that we have,

17:02 It's something that's passed down in our family and I

17:06 hope someday my kids get to enjoy this as well.
