10:46 I lived there for 6 months then and that was astonishing.

10:50 It was really a wonderful time.

10:52 This time we went to South Africa,

10:53 which is uh I'd never been and we happened to be I was making a film there.

10:57 Um, from uh the the book The Giver.

11:01 A lot of people know this book, Lois Lowry's book.

11:04 Middle school is kind of young adult book.

11:07 And um we were there early December and uh and it was when Mandela died.

11:15 So it was interesting to be there when all

11:18 the molecules shifted in Cape Town because it really did.

11:21 You could feel this huge um combination of of you know

11:27 grief and exaltation because people cuz he was such a singular figure.

11:32 Such an amazing man.

11:34 But yeah, we were there.

11:34 And then we went off on uh safari after I

11:37 finished the film and we were up in the north, which is uh amazing.

11:42 Amazing.

11:42 And you saw lots of animals.

11:43 Most people are lucky if they see one, but you saw crazy things happen.

11:47 Yeah, we did.

11:48 I mean, the first day we were arrived at at dusk and they said,

11:52 "Well, we'll go out for a little drive.

11:54 We may not see anything." And we saw a murder and a near

12:01 That must be hard to watch.

12:02 [laughter] Was it a lion getting something?

12:05 It was um it was a snake up in a tree eating a bird in the very last bit of bits

12:13 Wow.

12:13 happening.

12:13 It was really alarming.

12:14 And um And then we came upon some elephants and the elephants are amazing.

12:19 They're huge herds of them uh divided on two sides of a river.

12:24 And there was one that looked like Dumbo and his mom, you know.

12:30 And as we watched them moving across,

12:32 I realized that it wasn't Dumbo and his mom.

12:35 It was a little female and a very, very large male uh on her tail.

12:45 [laughter]

12:45 And we were all sort of going oh.

12:50 [laughter] Oh, maybe we'll see something we don't want to see, you know.

12:52 And um And uh but she clearly she was very small.

12:56 The the our guide said, "She's too young,

12:59 you know." And and she was kept looking back and and going And we

13:05 were just so worried and they came closer and closer to the truck.

13:09 He was oblivious to everything where we were sitting.

13:13 And he was really all over her.

13:17 And she lifted her little trunk and she

13:20 just uttered this cry that was like human.

13:23 IT WAS LIKE [screaming]

13:27 AND ACROSS THE RIVER THERE WERE THREE huge female elephants AND THEY WENT

13:33 AND THEY GOT IN THE RIVER AND THEY went across like this and they just,

13:37 you know, took care of his business and he was like

13:41 Yay!

13:42 [cheering] Good for THE FEMALE ELEPHANTS.

13:44 [applause] WHAT A THING TO SEE.

13:47 Oh my god!

13:49 And then we saw the snake eating the bird and then

13:51 we went off back for dinner and it was like Wow!

13:55 exhausted

13:55 Oh my god!

13:56 Thank god the next day we got up and it was raining

13:59 and we and the guide said well we probably won't see anything today.

14:05 I could go for hours on this.

14:07 Well, I just want to say they're saying to take

15:03 They're just They're just ridiculously cute.

15:07 I I just every time someone comes on and they've

15:10 been on a safari I just I'm dying to go.

15:37 It was sort of fun, no.

15:41 I mean because she's so toxic, she's pretty mean to everybody.

15:44 But the really wonderful thing about her is that she was incapable of lying.

15:50 She really only says the truth all the time.

15:55 Uh and sometimes she uses it as a weapon.

15:57 But sometimes she just says it because nobody else is

15:59 saying it and it's just a gorgeous thing to see

16:03 So and you and Julia, Julia was here not too long ago.

16:34 a mother uh who gathers the whole family back at the Oklahoma home.

16:41 Um and just kind of takes them all apart.

16:49 on a Pulitzer Prize winning play at by Tracy Letts.

16:53 It was really funny.

16:55 I saw it in the theater.

16:56 It was about 3 hours.

16:57 It felt like 45 minutes.

16:59 Boom.

16:59 And the film isn't that long.

17:02 They've cut about an hour out.

17:03 So it's um it's sort of a swifter trip.

17:07 But it's still funny and scathing.

17:09 It's just like everybody's had those holiday dinners where

17:13 you have one person who goes, "And you know what?

17:15 Yeah.

17:16 know what?" And everybody is going, "Oh, no.

17:18 He's not going to He's not going to want an uncle,

17:21 you know." Goes after the other one.

17:23 And uh it's kind of that that thing.

17:25 It's pretty funny.

17:26 It's only funny afterwards when you're telling it to your friends.

17:31 It's a I think it's very funny.

17:33 It is definitely dark,

17:34 but I I it's just to watch the performances and everyone's performance in there,

17:38 you know, was everyone across the board was amazing.

17:43 Um and you shot in Oklahoma and how was that?

17:46 It was interesting because, you know,

17:48 the the play was done by a theater group that had lived together for years,

17:52 Steppenwolf uh theater group.

17:54 And we didn't know each other, the actors in the film.

17:56 We all flew in from different coasts and in the middle of the country.

18:00 So, I thought it would be good if we all lived

18:02 together in a in a condo village behind the Toyota dealership.

18:07 Which was convenient because, you know,

18:09 they asked us what kind of cars we wanted to rent and I thought,

18:12 well, I have a Prius, so I thought I didn't want to learn a new dashboard.

18:16 So, I I said, "Get me a Prius." And they they couldn't find one.

18:22 And I didn't know about this.

18:23 I didn't know they were going to these lengths, you know, to get me a Prius.

18:27 care.

18:27 Take a Camry, whatever, Ford Focus,

18:30 I don't know, something small and, you know, cute.

18:34 And [laughter] they just um they went to all these lengths to get this car.

18:38 Well, that's hilarious cuz that happens a lot to celebrities where you ask

18:41 for something and then you don't know

18:43 that people are going crazy getting something

18:45 being killed to get it for you.

18:46 And you're like, "I didn't know.

18:47 I thought the Prius was in front of me." You know, it's right here.

18:50 Oh, man.

18:51 Anyway, but it was fun and Oklahoma is a a surprise.

18:55 It's so shockingly beautiful.

18:59 Um you think of it as it's going to be flat and dry,

19:01 but it's really varied and uh mysterious.
