The 2026 Subaru Uncharted Sport is Actually Really Fun, BUT There’s 1 Big Problem
Matt Maran Motoring
0:00 This is the 2026 Subaru Uncharted Sport.
0:03 And in this video, I'm going to cover the exterior, the interior,
0:05 take it for a drive, and see what it's like out on the road,
0:07 as well as talking about the kind of efficiency you can
0:10 expect and also the pricing and how it compares to the competition.
0:13 And so, as far as this Uncharted, well,
0:16 we'll just uh clear out the elephant in the room right away.
0:19 This is a Toyota CHR that has had the Subaru treatment done to it.
0:24 And so, this is built by Toyota.
0:25 This one was uh engineered primarily by Toyota.
0:29 And this is part of this partnership that Toyota
0:30 and Subaru have to build a variety of EVs.
0:33 And so there's the Sultterra, there's the Trail Seeker,
0:35 which was a Subaru version on this same platform.
0:38 Uh, and then we have the Uncharted here,
0:40 which kind of slots as the lowest version.
0:43 And there's some interesting choices they made here with these.
0:45 But I think as far as styling goes, personally,
0:48 it's the better looking of the two between this and the CHR.
0:50 Uh, styling of course is subjective.
0:52 But right up front there,
0:53 I really love this six LED arrangement they have for the headlights.
0:58 It has a Porsche kind of vibe to me and just looks really cool.
1:02 I mean, the Toyota looks very cool as well and very angular,
1:05 but this to me is a little more traditional,
1:07 but still very futuristic and cool looking.
1:09 And you also have that interesting front bumper with almost a grin built
1:13 in with the way you have the black portions that kind of sweep up there.
1:16 But you even have an illuminated Subaru badge there up front.
1:18 And it's just a very cool look up front.
1:20 Obviously, very similar to the new Sultterra refresh styling we saw.
1:23 And of course, we see the same elements on the Trail Seeker.
1:26 And speaking of those others,
1:28 that is the one caveat here that we'll get into later
1:31 as far as pricing is how these are all priced.
1:33 They're all priced pretty close to each other.
1:35 So, it's going to really come down to just
1:36 how much you like this body style in particular.
1:38 Although, there is a little bit of savings.
1:40 This is also the first front-wheel drive Subaru in a long time.
1:43 It's available front-wheel drive.
1:44 This one we have here is the all-wheel drive mid-grade sport trim.
1:47 There's going to be a lower trim that is again only front-wheel drive.
1:50 And then there's the GT at the top, which gives you some extra nicities that you
1:54 can't even get in the Toyota version,
1:55 which is kind of cool the way they've differentiated these.
1:58 But anyway, moving on to the sides here,
1:59 you have these black 18-in wheels that look fine.
2:02 But I do think that uh some of the other wheels
2:04 that are available for these and for the Toyota are a little
2:06 bit more exciting than these, which are a little too one-dimensional
2:09 to me as far as just there's not a whole lot there.
2:12 Just some lines and a bunch of black.
2:13 But I do like that we have nice large sidewalls on these tires.
2:16 That gives you a better ride and better impact protection.
2:19 And then also on the sides, obviously very distinct as far
2:22 as the side profile compared to especially Sulttera.
2:25 And you know, you see you have like the extra cladding there on the lower part
2:29 and the sweeping roof line cuz this is supposed to be like a coupy SUV instead.
2:32 And as far as the side, the one other big thing is the size
2:36 differences for this, especially compared to a Sultterra.
2:39 So this is 6.7 in shorter on a 3.9 in shorter wheelbase compared to Sulttera.
2:45 So, it is going to drive quite a bit
2:46 differently and it is sized quite a bit differently.
2:48 So, this isn't just a Sultterero with a different, you know,
2:52 profile like this is sign significantly different and you also have
2:55 it 1.2 in lower while still having 8.2 in of ground clearance,
3:00 which is very good, especially for an EV.
3:02 Uh, it's also 2 in wider than Sulttera actually.
3:04 But the one last thing I'll say on the side
3:06 here is you have the key giveaway that this is related
3:09 to the CHR with that C-pillar mounted door handle there which is
3:13 straight off the uh last gen CHR as far as the inspiration.
3:16 Going out back though,
3:17 I think that Subaru has the slightly cooler approach to the back end as well.
3:21 So you have some tail lights that mirror
3:23 the front here with those individual LED
3:25 elements versus the more uh linear line kind
3:28 of uh taillights you have on the CHR.
3:30 Both again look very cool and largely very much the same
3:33 as far as the shape of the tail lights and stuff,
3:34 but you know, kind of a cool difference there as far as the internal portion.
3:38 It's also interesting that we have Subaru spelled out on the back there
3:41 instead of having a Subaru badge pllopped on the trunk lid for whatever reason.
3:45 But I think it works,
3:45 especially the black badging we have here on this sport trim.
3:48 Uh, you know, certainly a cool touch and you know, sportier rear bumper there.
3:52 I like the contrast there.
3:54 And, uh, you know, also you have a little bit
3:56 of like a roof spoiler kind of thing going on there.
3:58 But you will also see on that large piece of glass, there is no rear wiper,
4:02 which is one of the downsides compared to the other
4:05 Subarus that do have the rear wiper in the back.
4:08 Now, you know, you can on the top trim get a camera rearview mirror,
4:10 which will help negate some of that, but this one doesn't have that.
4:13 And, you know, that rear window will get a little dirty sometimes.
4:18 It's not as big of a deal as you might expect.
4:20 It's not terrible.
4:21 Typically, you don't have too much collecting on the back there, but you know,
4:24 that is just one thing that I do wish they would have added.
4:26 And uh but yeah, overall I think it's a really cool look.
4:29 And this wolf ray paint in certain lights is kind of interesting.
4:32 In other lights, it's just kind of an average gray.
4:34 Uh but the one really fun color is you can
4:36 get a habanero orange color here for these which is cool.
4:39 But I would love to see the other uh Subaru colors that we have
4:42 on the like Trail Seeker for example or you can get a darker blue.
4:46 There's also a lighter blue.
4:47 I think uh you know some more fun colors
4:49 for this would be great because aside from that orange,
4:52 everything else is grayscale.
4:53 It's just any variation between white and black.
4:56 That's all that's available.
4:57 And I think for a car like this, it's fun.
4:59 Give it some fun colors, Subaru.
5:01 And so I hope they add that in future model years.
5:03 But overall, still a great look.
5:05 The interior of the Uncharted is pretty cool.
5:07 It's the same kind of interior again we get with the Toyotas
5:10 and even with the Sultterra and the Trail Seeker here.
5:12 But it's a really nicely done interior for the most part.
5:15 There's a few complaints here I'll cover, but overall, you know,
5:18 pretty cool interior and I think very fitting for the price point.
5:21 And I really love, you know, this orange strip you have going across just
5:24 to give you a little splash of color.
5:26 And there's also ambient lighting that reflects that.
5:28 You can change that coloring as well.
5:30 Uh but you also do have like options for the seats here.
5:33 So you have the black here,
5:34 but you can also uh get a lighter uh interior if you'd like.
5:37 And also between the Toyota and the Subaru here,
5:39 everyone packages everything a little bit differently.
5:42 So it'll come down to what stuff you want in particular as far as which is
5:45 the better value of the two as far as the stuff you get on the inside here.
5:49 But anyway, first thing sitting down in these seats.
5:51 So, this sport mid-grade trim here has these StarTech seats,
5:54 a leatherrett kind of material.
5:56 If you go down to the base version, you have cloth seats,
5:58 and then you stick with the Starex here even on the higher trim.
6:01 But they're really great.
6:02 I love that they're perforated here, even though they're not ventilated.
6:05 Um, they're just heated seats here.
6:06 Uh, but they do have the power adjustment,
6:08 including lumbar, and you do have memory.
6:10 That's something that you have to go to the XSSE
6:12 version of the CHR in order to get that memory.
6:14 But if you do want ventilated seats,
6:16 Subaru is actually the only one to offer that here.
6:18 the Toyota, no matter how much you pay, you can't get ventilated seats.
6:21 So, the Subaru is actually the more plush one
6:23 whenever you go up to that top GT trim.
6:25 Uh, but these seats are also nice and soft and squishy,
6:28 but still very supportive,
6:29 very comfortable, good bolstering, and I just really like them a lot.
6:32 Moving on to the steering wheel here.
6:34 Subaru has chosen to go with a wheel that has a flat top and a flat bottom.
6:38 If you don't like that, the Toyota has a regular round wheel.
6:40 So, that's an important distinction.
6:42 But otherwise, they're the same wheel.
6:43 So, you have a fair assortment of buttons on the front of them here.
6:46 But overall, it's at least spaced out and not
6:49 too overwhelming once you get used to everything.
6:51 Uh, and it has a great 9 and three grip,
6:53 nice 10 and two uh, gaps here, even though there's no notches there,
6:56 but you know, uh, because of the way the wheel is shaped,
6:58 it feels pretty good there, too.
6:59 And you also have paddle shifters here on the back
7:01 of the wheel that will change your regen for slowing down the vehicle.
7:04 And you'll also see the driver monitoring sensor here that you get
7:07 because this has traffic jam assist built in, which is a Toyota
7:10 thing that allows you to go hands-free in traffic jams on highways
7:14 under 25 mph if you have the subscription um for the connected services.
7:18 This steering wheel also is heated by the way
7:20 and that's a nice touch and that's something um that you
7:23 get here in this sport version and that's something
7:25 that the CHR makes standard on both the SE and XSSE versions.
7:29 So no real distinction there.
7:31 Moving on to the gauge cluster.
7:32 That's arguably the worst part of this interior in my opinion.
7:35 I've complained about this in every single Toyota and now Subaru that uses this.
7:39 Um, it's just a horrible use of space.
7:41 I mean, you know, some of the bezel is used by warning lights there,
7:45 but I mean, just so much wasted space.
7:47 And the problem is it just blocks your vision.
7:49 I'm 5' 9 and me sitting in my usual driving position here, I mean,
7:53 there's at least two inches uh that it goes beyond the hood
7:56 and it's just not good for safety to have this screen blocking,
8:00 you know, the windshield.
8:01 Uh, I wish they would have, you know,
8:02 sliced down that bezel, especially that top bezel.
8:05 But even on the sides there, just, you know,
8:06 for this little like 7-in display to have
8:10 this massive thing is just kind of crazy.
8:12 And I hope that that does get changed in a refresh
8:15 um to go to a more traditional gauge cluster.
8:17 I'm happy we have a gauge cluster because
8:19 there are others that are trying to, you know, get rid of that altogether.
8:21 So, if it's between one or the other, I'd rather have this than nothing at all.
8:26 But, you know, definitely not a I think it's honestly
8:28 the worst gauge cluster design in the industry right now.
8:31 And there's not a whole lot that it shows either.
8:32 It has a little power gauge there.
8:34 You know, you can show like your audio
8:35 information and a couple other basic things there.
8:38 So, you know, it's fine.
8:39 Just again, I just wish it was less obtrusive.
8:41 Uh, but then coming over to the middle of the dashboard here,
8:44 all of these get this 14-in touchscreen as standard,
8:46 and it's a really nicely done touchcreen.
8:48 It has wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto,
8:51 and uh, it's, you know, just pretty nice and snappy.
8:53 Now, it's not quite as fast as the brand
8:55 new Toyota system we see in the new RAV 4,
8:57 for example, but it's really good still,
8:59 and especially compared to the old Subarus with their infotainment,
9:02 this is miles better.
9:03 Anyway, um you know, you do have a cloud-based navigation system,
9:07 so that will require subscription if you want to have navigation built in.
9:10 But again, with a smartphone mirroring,
9:11 you can just use your favorite maps app and, you know, that's going to be fine.
9:14 Uh but it's funny because there's no GPS based navigation.
9:18 It's all, you know, internetbased.
9:19 And for a vehicle called the Uncharted,
9:22 if you're going in actual uncharted territory,
9:24 you're probably not going to have navigations.
9:26 A funny little uh thing there, but otherwise,
9:29 you know, it's nice and easy, very simple.
9:31 It mostly defaults to your smartphone integration,
9:33 but you do have satellite radio here still and all the other, you know, basics.
9:36 And I also love that you have easy knobs there for climate and for uh volume.
9:41 And you know that everpresent row of controls for your heated and heated seats
9:45 and heated steering wheel and the climate is
9:47 certainly appreciated and uh very well executed there.
9:50 Coming down, one thing that's not super well executed
9:52 is this dual wireless charging pad, which is standard.
9:56 And you know, the idea is nice, but these are smooth.
9:59 There's really no brackets to hold them in place.
10:02 This is going to be borderline useless
10:03 unless you have a case that's heavily rubberized.
10:06 Even then, you might have mixed um luck.
10:08 My buddy who has a case that's supposed to be able to do
10:11 cheap wireless charging uh wasn't able to get a charge on this at all.
10:15 Um and best of luck you'll have is with, you know,
10:18 just being parked and having it.
10:19 But if you want to do actual charging with your phone,
10:21 you're going to want to use the USBC jacks, which are abundant in this vehicle.
10:25 Um so that's just mostly wasted space.
10:27 Uh and because it's wireless charging mat,
10:29 you can't put anything that's conductive on there either.
10:31 So no metal keys or anything.
10:33 So largely useless.
10:34 But um yeah, I just hope someday they improve that.
10:38 You also do have this little shifter area where
10:40 you have a little bit of piano black plastic.
10:41 It's really the only piano black in this whole car.
10:44 So, I'm not going to complain too much,
10:45 but you can see how that just looks like crap.
10:47 It's already scratched up and dusty with this car having 2,000 m on it.
10:50 So, don't love that.
10:52 But moving on to the storage spaces here in the Uncharted,
10:54 it's pretty good, actually.
10:55 So, first off in the doors here,
10:57 you have a double bottle holder arrangement here, which is great.
11:00 And then in the middle here,
11:01 you do have this nice large area underneath uh the console where you
11:05 have another USBC jack on the driver's side and one on the passenger side.
11:08 You also have a regular power outlet down there and your two cup holders here.
11:12 And then you have the center armrest uh which has a little bit of padding,
11:15 but it's pretty thin.
11:16 Actually, not very comfortable for resting your elbow on.
11:18 That needs to be plusher.
11:19 But the nice thing about this is that it does open up on both sides.
11:22 So either driver or passenger can get into there.
11:24 Um which is cool.
11:25 And then you'll open it up and see you have,
11:27 you know, a decent amount of space, but it does get deeper.
11:30 So you can open up and remove that little tray there.
11:32 And then you have a deeper area and a nice area to hide things out of the way,
11:36 which is especially important because there's no glove box in this vehicle.
11:40 Just means, yeah, you're going to have to put
11:41 all your documents and stuff in this center here.
11:43 The last thing to mention before we move on to the back
11:45 is that this one has the regular stereo here in the sports.
11:48 If you go up to the GT trim, you'll get a Harman Cardon 11 speakeraker stereo.
11:52 Harman Carton stereoss are usually pretty good
11:53 in my experience and typically sound a little bit
11:55 better than the JBL stereoss the Toyota offers
11:58 and that's what they have in the CHR.
11:59 I believe it's also only a nine- speakeraker in the uh CHR.
12:02 So I think you get extra speakers here in the Subaru.
12:05 So again, a little bit of a plusher and you know
12:07 better experience there between the ventilated seats uh the better stereo.
12:11 And if you don't need the best stereo possible,
12:13 I will say that this regular base stereo in the sport is actually very good.
12:17 It's totally fine.
12:18 I have no issues with it whatsoever.
12:20 It's pretty clear.
12:21 It's got some decent bass even.
12:22 And so if you're not an audio file, it must have the most speakers possible.
12:26 I think this is actually a completely sufficient stereo.
12:28 Now, this one being the Sport does not have the panoramic roof.
12:31 That's something that's only in the GT trim.
12:33 Now, if you want to get the pano roof and you don't mind the other stuff,
12:36 you can get that in an XSSE CHR for cheaper.
12:39 Um, so, you know, it all comes down to again what your priorities are,
12:43 and I'll talk more about that here once we talk about pricing later.
12:46 But um you know, just know you got to go up to the $45,000
12:49 uh GT in order to get the uh the pano roof here in this.
12:52 Now, moving on to the back seat here in the Uncharted.
12:55 So, it's a decent amount of space.
12:57 But before we get into the back seat,
12:58 you will see that the door opening doesn't open very wide.
13:01 And that combined with the slope to the rear roof line
13:04 means you have a limited entry to get into the back there.
13:07 I mean, it's not the end of the world, but you're, you know,
13:09 going to have to just kind of lean over a little bit to get in.
13:11 You know, if you want the easiest back seat to use,
13:14 you're going to want to go for the Sultterra or the Trail Seeker.
13:16 Both of those will be better.
13:17 But, you know, for a back seat you're using on occasion or for people that are,
13:21 you know, not super tall, it's going to be completely fine.
13:23 And so, getting into the back seat though, I'm 5'9", be sitting behind myself.
13:27 I have about an inch of leg room.
13:28 And that's really where you're going to, you know,
13:30 feel the the hurt of the shorter wheelbase here.
13:33 You know, there's just less space to work with.
13:35 So, you know, you're going to have less
13:36 leg room by several inches compared to Sulttera.
13:39 Uh, so just keep that in mind as well.
13:41 Now, surprisingly, headroom isn't terrible,
13:43 at least without the glass roof here.
13:45 Me being 5 foot n, you know, I do have several inches of headroom to spare
13:48 back there thanks to those little cutouts you have.
13:50 So, um, I was actually pleasantly surprised with that.
13:53 But, you know, just keep in mind you're not going to have a ton of leg room.
13:55 Um, but then when you look forward,
13:57 you'll see you have two USBC jacks and air vents back there, which is great.
14:01 You can get heated rear seats.
14:02 That's going to be in the GT version that comes with that.
14:04 Uh that is something again you can also get
14:06 for less in the XSSE version of the CHR.
14:09 You also will see there's a fold down center armrest with two
14:11 cup holders built into it and pockets in those doors as well.
14:14 And it's also worth noting that that rear seat does recline.
14:17 So, uh gives you a little bit of extra space there.
14:19 Now, moving on to the cargo space here in the Uncharted.
14:21 It's pretty decent actually.
14:23 You know, for this sportier silhouette,
14:25 obviously you have less stacking ability than Sulttera,
14:27 but it's not that much smaller.
14:29 It is smaller.
14:30 Again, another casualty of the shorter length, but it's not terrible.
14:34 And so, you'll see there's a little pocket there on the lefth hand side.
14:37 On the right hand side, you'll see you have a regular house current plug.
14:40 And also, you will see whenever you lift up the floor there,
14:43 you have a lot of extra space.
14:45 And so, you can even remove those uh little covers if you want and just have,
14:48 you know, a less polished but, you know, deeper space there if you'd like.
14:53 But you'll see there's extra pockets there in the front.
14:54 Then also in the back part of the cargo area there, you have some more as well.
14:58 Again, if you want more space, there's Sulttera.
15:00 There's Trailseker, which are both again pretty close in price.
15:03 Again, I'll talk about that later.
15:04 But overall, you know, still very nice.
15:06 It's a power rear hatch here, the Sport, by the way, too, which is great.
15:09 Um, but we'll turn on and go for a drive here.
15:11 So, because the Uncharted is again very much based on a Toyota,
15:14 we have a Toyota key that just has the Subaru uh logo on it there.
15:18 Um, but yeah, it's identical to any other key getting
15:20 like a RAV 4 or something like that, but it's fine.
15:22 You know, has all the basic buttons there on it.
15:24 And um it is of course keyless access,
15:26 keyless entry and push button start here in this too which is great.
15:29 So you just leave the key in your pocket,
15:30 hit the power button and it turns right on.
15:33 All right, so setting off here in the Uncharted.
15:36 So the first thing you notice about this vehicle,
15:39 well aside from again the gauge cluster blocking your visibility,
15:42 I think the first thing that I notice actually
15:44 before we talk more about visibility is the throttle response.
15:47 That's what I noticed immediately.
15:49 And as I've already driven the CHR,
15:52 I can say that that has a more direct throttle response.
15:55 Subaru did this weird thing with their tuning where they I
15:57 don't know if they're trying to tune in like a little
15:59 bit of like CVT lag or turbo lag or something
16:02 to make this feel more gas powered or something and less immediate.
16:06 Maybe they just didn't want it to be super jumpy,
16:08 but it's just artificially delayed.
16:10 And so like I push in, you know, maybe 2/10 of a throttle and I get nothing.
16:16 and then it like ramps up pretty quickly.
16:19 So, it's it's not even that it's more gradual.
16:21 It's just that there's just some dead travel
16:24 built into the gas pedal for some reason.
16:26 I don't love that.
16:26 I got used to it over the week, but I again I just don't love it.
16:29 It's just something you don't need cuz I think
16:30 the Toyota has great throttle tuning and it's not too jumpy,
16:33 but it just feels more like what you're expecting.
16:36 Whenever you put your foot in, you're expecting something
16:39 and this gives you nothing for again that first little bit.
16:42 Maybe a nitpick.
16:43 Test drive it for yourself.
16:44 See what you think.
16:45 Um, but it's just worth knowing the Toyota didn't have that in my experience.
16:48 Now, otherwise, visibility in this beyond
16:50 that gauge cluster is actually very good.
16:52 You have a nice thin A-pillar.
16:54 I love that the mirrors off onto the door.
16:55 So, you have a nice little uh window there, you know,
16:57 at the mirror and even view out of the back is surprisingly good.
17:01 It's not as bad as you would expect for, you know, these coupe SUVs.
17:04 You'd think, oh, I'm going to be feeling like I'm driving around in a tank.
17:07 It doesn't feel like that.
17:08 It's totally fine.
17:09 And again, in the GT,
17:10 you get the camera rearview mirror and that will make it even better.
17:13 But I have no complaints with that.
17:14 But again, as long as there's no water or anything on there,
17:17 otherwise, you know, it's totally fine.
17:19 Um, and uh, other things here to note, I love the ride quality.
17:24 It's nice and smooth since they didn't go crazy
17:26 on the wheel size here for the sport in particular.
17:28 It's really been so soft and smooth,
17:30 especially combined with these nice soft seats.
17:32 And it's a nice quiet ride as well.
17:35 You know, of course, being electric, you don't hear anything really.
17:39 Um, but you know, even as we're going over a little bumps here,
17:42 very minimal disturbances and just, yeah, it's just super smooth.
17:46 And if you're, you know, just want to have this as a casual cruiser,
17:50 just to drive around and relax and just look cool with the cool styling,
17:53 this will do that really, really well.
17:55 Other things here, brakes thankfully, are calibrated very well.
17:58 And that is something that other uh,
18:00 companies really struggle with with EVs still.
18:02 and you know, they're either too grabby or they're
18:04 hard once you get down to, you know, the last 5 m perph because of the regen.
18:08 And this it's it's very natural, totally normal.
18:11 And the fact that Subaru and Toyota have nailed that feel,
18:15 I really can't overstate how impressive that is and how
18:19 that's a key difference between this and many others out there.
18:23 Um, now I will say the last thing about visibility is it
18:26 does feel a little cavelike in here still without that glass roof.
18:29 Maybe I'm just used to them in a lot
18:30 of these vehicles that I drive, but like, you know,
18:32 the windows are fairly large, but you know,
18:35 it just I feel like you'd have a lot more natural light.
18:37 And that's the other thing that really drives me crazy.
18:39 This has a forward cross traffic alert as standard,
18:42 and you can turn it off unless you
18:44 want to turn off all the automatic mercy braking.
18:46 Um, but like anytime your foot is not firmly planted
18:49 on the brake pedal when there's someone in front of you,
18:51 it freaks out and thinks you're going
18:52 to just go full throttle into an intersection.
18:55 And it just it that's the one thing that's super annoying,
18:58 but like and there's no way like you can turn off rear uh cross traffic alert,
19:02 but you can't turn off front cross traffic alert.
19:04 I really hope they add that in with a software update or something
19:07 because that is I mean I guess you get used to it,
19:10 but it just I became numb to alerts driving this vehicle around all week because
19:14 of the fact that it's just constantly
19:16 freaking out every time I intersection with that.
19:18 But anyway, I put it into the power mode, which is the sporty mode here.
19:21 It just again gives you more power.
19:23 Nothing else changes.
19:24 But let's turn down onto this back road and see how it accelerates.
19:26 Here we go.
19:27 I got wheel spin.
19:29 Wow.
19:30 And this thing takes off.
19:31 The nose lifts up and it it hustles.
19:34 This thing is quick.
19:36 And it's honestly I think they're kind
19:39 of underelling just how sporty this feels.
19:42 It it's really fun.
19:44 And the power delivery is really fun, too,
19:46 which I'll talk more about whenever we're on a back
19:47 road with how it divies out that power.
19:50 But we have a dual motor setup here again in the sport in the in the GT.
19:54 It's a 338 horsepower setup.
19:56 Toyota and Subaru for some reason don't like
19:58 talking about torque in their EVs or their hybrids.
20:01 But so, you know, it's a mystery as far as torque goes,
20:04 I think, you know, it's probably around 400 lb feet or so.
20:07 Uh, but for a vehicle that, you know,
20:08 isn't super heavy, um, it's it's it's really quick.
20:12 It does a 4.7 second 0 to 60 time, which you know, if you're used to, you know,
20:17 super performance, I mean, this will still smoke a WRX easily,
20:21 and it's just it's awesome.
20:23 you know, if I think the the way to approach
20:25 this if you are someone who's always been into the gas stuff,
20:28 but you're open-minded to EVs, this it's a little bigger,
20:32 but this is essentially the Cross Trek XT
20:35 that Subaru refuses to build for who knows what reason,
20:39 but this is basically that in a way where you have, you know,
20:42 a ton of power and a smaller Cross Trekish kind of sized, you know, package.
20:47 It's a really cool combo.
20:48 I'm so happy that we have something this like that's this fun and and this fast.
20:53 Um, and even if you're someone who just wants a more practical WRX,
20:56 you're waiting for a WX hatch or something like that.
20:58 Again, if you're open to EVs, this is that.
21:01 I mean, this is has, you know,
21:02 more horsepower than you'll probably get in an STI
21:04 if they ever do an STI version of the WRX.
21:07 Um, and uh, you know, it's cool.
21:09 I mean, I honestly I'd love to see an actual STI
21:12 version of this because the Trail Seeker is even faster yet.
21:15 that's got 375 horsepower.
21:18 And you know, the super and toy engineers have kind of suggested already
21:21 that there's no reason why they couldn't put those more powerful motors in this.
21:26 Um, so, you know, I'd love to see that someday.
21:29 I think that'd be really cool.
21:31 They've even trademarked the Subaru STE instead
21:33 of STI for the electric uh versions.
21:36 It could be kind of cool to see someday.
21:37 We'll see.
21:38 But anyway, this road's a little bit rougher.
21:41 You hear a little bit of road noise, but it's really refined.
21:43 And it's, you know, quieter than the average gas powered Toyota or Subaru.
21:46 And anyway, we're cut up some corners here I always take.
21:48 And let's see how it handles.
21:50 So, nice and flat, of course,
21:51 with the battery pack nice and low there in the floor.
21:55 Um, and uh, you know,
21:56 these tires again have a good amount of grip to them as well.
21:59 Even though they're nothing too sporty,
22:00 you can of course upgrade to sportier tires
22:02 if you want even more grip and you know, amp up the performance even more.
22:06 But here's what I love about this.
22:07 So booting it coming out of the corner, I mean,
22:10 it will default to under steer if you get in it too early,
22:13 but if you nail it and get it just right, it will bring the back end around.
22:17 It does very much have at least a 50/50 split.
22:20 I'm not sure the exact power split here,
22:22 but the motors, I believe, are equal in their power.
22:25 Uh, and you know, you do have actual um tail happy antics.
22:30 And even on a dry road the other day, I just gave it a little bit of gas.
22:33 I always save my first full Florida reaction for you guys,
22:35 but I gave it a little bit of gas and just booted it.
22:37 Uh, and it it does want to rotate and I love that.
22:41 And you know, this vehicle, yeah, if you don't drive it in a sporting manner,
22:45 it can feel kind of sanitized and, you know, unexciting honestly.
22:50 But, you know, if you play around with it,
22:52 you actually you find this other dimension and this other
22:56 character to the vehicle where it it will play cuz again, it's a lot of power.
23:02 And uh especially if you're on a gravel road
23:04 or something like that, this could be even more fun.
23:06 But we're actually turning around a little bit of a gravel road here.
23:09 And I'll just give it a little boop.
23:11 Yeah, it totally slid the back end out there a little bit.
23:15 And uh it's just it's a beast.
23:17 And yeah.
23:18 Okay.
23:18 Like even the wheels slightly turned,
23:20 it just lights up the traction control there because it's
23:24 um just like desperately trying to put the power down.
23:26 It's a lot of power and it's it's almost like too much
23:29 for the car to kind of handle in a way in a good way.
23:31 And that's what amps up the excitement whenever you
23:33 feel like you're on the edge a little bit.
23:35 You feel like it's it's struggling to put the power down.
23:38 Now it, you know, it is the symmetrical allhe drive system they claim,
23:41 but it's, you know, just a regular electric all-wheel drive kind of thing.
23:45 Yeah.
23:46 But yeah, it's it's fun.
23:48 It is really fun.
23:49 And if you had actual sticky tires that could
23:51 put all this power to the ground better,
23:53 this thing would be even more of a monster on a back road.
23:56 It does not feel like an SUV.
23:57 It does not feel like the weight is holding it back whatsoever.
24:01 This thing is really, really fun.
24:04 Um, and and in the CHR, I didn't have an opportunity to be on super
24:08 tight roads to really test it out a whole lot.
24:10 Uh, but here on my own home turf, it is.
24:14 Yeah.
24:16 It's It's really fun.
24:17 It's so cool.
24:18 And the suspension setup, obviously independent front and rear and all that.
24:21 Um there's no adaptive dampers or anything,
24:24 but it's it's actually nice and flat, too.
24:26 Very planted feeling.
24:28 And um yeah, just really Yeah, it rotates.
24:32 It rotates.
24:34 I love that.
24:35 Um and yeah, they did a great job on this thing as far as the setup of it.
24:40 Obviously, again, I'd love to see more.
24:42 I'd love to see again that STE version or STI version um someday,
24:46 but even out of the box, this is great.
24:49 It'd be far more dynamic than any kind of Cross Track ST would be.
24:53 Um and yeah, you put some better tires on this, you'll
24:57 probably leave the WX's uh behind you on the back road there.
25:00 It's because it's just instant power.
25:02 You don't have to wait for any kind of spooling up of a turbo,
25:05 any kind of power delivery.
25:06 It's just instant full torque coming straight out of corners.
25:09 I mean, you just slingshot out um like a cannon.
25:12 It just it's crazy how this thing just fires its way out of corners.
25:16 And it's it's really fun.
25:17 Again, you have to be responsible with how you deploy
25:19 that cuz it will go to under steer if you're not careful.
25:22 But when you do it right, it's so fun.
25:28 Yeah.
25:29 And if you want to get an even sportier experience here,
25:31 again, you do have the regen paddles, so you can just play with those to slow
25:33 down the vehicle without the brake pedal if you want.
25:36 you're coasting down a long hill or something like that.
25:38 Being able to play with that is very cool.
25:39 I don't know how many people are actually going to do that, but it's
25:42 nice that you have that option and the ability to to, you know, adjust that.
25:45 You can also just have it so if you like a higher regen,
25:48 uh it won't go to a full one pedal, but it'll go to, you know,
25:51 a heavy regen there and stay there if that's what you'd like as well.
25:54 So, now we'll go ahead and uh chill out
25:56 here and put it back into uh the regular mode.
25:58 There's also an eco mode.
26:00 Let's talk about the battery.
26:01 So, that's obviously very important here in EVs.
26:02 So, this has a 74.7 kWh battery as standard in all of these.
26:07 And here for the sport version, you're going to have 287 miles of range.
26:11 Uh, I believe the GT is right around that as well.
26:13 I think maybe goes down to 276, but very similar.
26:16 And then you go down or you go up to 300
26:19 mi of range in the front-wheel drive version if you want that.
26:21 Now, that's going to downgrade power to just 221 horsepower.
26:25 And, you know, it's it's fine if you live in a sunny place.
26:28 You don't need the extra power.
26:29 you know, you get the extra range and efficiency there, but you know,
26:33 it's not that big of a gain to, you know, drop the all-wheel drive.
26:37 So, you know, it's I honestly surprised there's not more of a a gain there.
26:42 But anyway, whenever you do need to charge up, it's a NACS port.
26:46 Uh you do get adapters as standard, by the way,
26:48 so you know, you'll have all that covered.
26:50 Um, but anyway, it'll charge 150 kW,
26:52 which is very average, uh, ordinary kind of charge speed.
26:56 Now, Subaru claims a 10% to 80% charge will take about 28 minutes.
27:01 Uh, obviously, your conditions will vary,
27:03 but it does do preconditioning for the battery, so you're able to, you know,
27:06 maximize those charge speeds a little bit better, especially in the winter time.
27:09 And, you know, they've done a lot of improvements
27:11 with this second generation of these batteries here, you know.
27:14 So, compared to like the first gen Sultterra, you know,
27:17 this is going to charge a lot quicker and be a little
27:19 bit easier to live with as far as all that goes.
27:21 It's also an 11 kW onboard charger,
27:23 so you can do some pretty good level two speeds at home if you'd like or even,
27:26 you know, level one uh because the battery isn't huge.
27:29 And as far as the all drive system goes,
27:31 we have this dual mode X mode system that Subaru uses.
27:34 So the one mode is just for like snow and uh sand.
27:37 And then there's like a deep mud kind of mode that you get as well.
27:40 And that's going to, you know,
27:42 allow you to have the traction control turned off there.
27:44 stability control lessened up so that you're able to uh you
27:48 know get out of those slippery conditions a little bit better
27:50 and allow the vehicle to spin and not just immediately cut power
27:53 the second that uh you know you get that wheel spin there.
27:56 So that's certainly nice to have.
27:57 That's something you do also get in the Toyota.
27:59 So nothing unique to the Subaru here really.
28:01 But now we're out on the highway here.
28:02 So I'll go ahead and turn on the adaptive cruise
28:04 control system which does come again as standard here in this.
28:07 And um we also have the lane keep assist is standard here.
28:11 And uh so I have all that running.
28:13 Traffic jam assist is an extra thing
28:15 that you have to subscribe to, but I believe
28:17 that is also here standard on these, at least on the Sport and on the GT here.
28:21 And as far as all the other safety equipment, everything else is standard, too.
28:24 The only thing, not really safety equipment,
28:26 but the only thing that's like an extra cost thing is here on Sport and GT,
28:29 you get the 360 camera.
28:30 You don't get that on the base frontwheel drive version.
28:33 But otherwise, uh, everything comes on this here.
28:35 So, it's doing a great job here so far in this gentle corner going around.
28:39 And um it's a pretty windy day, so you hear a little bit of wind noise,
28:42 but even that I'd say is, you know, better than the average gas powered Subaru.
28:47 Now, as far as efficiency goes here in the Uncharted,
28:50 I'm averaging currently 4 m per kilowatt hour,
28:52 which is very good, especially for even an all-wheel drive vehicle.
28:56 And so, I think part of that comes down to the great aerodynamics of, you know,
28:59 having the very swoopy styling here.
29:01 Um, but again, for 8.2 in of ground clearance,
29:04 this thing is still really good as far as the efficiency goes, I'd say.
29:08 Now, you know, I'm not doing any kind of long range tests,
29:10 so I can't tell you exactly, you know, what I get on a long drive,
29:14 but um you know, overall, it's still I mean,
29:16 at 88% right now, it's telling me 233 mi with the AC on.
29:21 It does give you a higher rating if you uh turn that off.
29:24 So, like turning that off immediately goes up to 243 mi of range.
29:28 Um which is interesting because it's just AC.
29:29 I'm not like running the heat.
29:31 But um just know if you want the best range, you know,
29:33 have the windows down a little bit or, you know,
29:36 just go without the HVAC system there.
29:39 But um you know, good efficiency though for sure.
29:41 But the last thing to mention here is
29:43 the pricing and how it compares to the competition.
29:45 So let's get into that.
29:46 So the Uncharted starts at $36,445 including
29:50 destination for the base frontwheel drive version.
29:53 This sport trim is $41,720 as tested and the fully loaded GT is $45,245.
30:01 And if you're looking for the best price possible
30:03 on the Uncharted or on any vehicle for that matter,
30:06 you're definitely going to want to head over
30:07 to mattaranmoing.com and go to the new car quotes page.
30:11 There you'll get access to dealer invoice pricing
30:13 as well as getting connected with a local
30:14 dealer so you can check out the Uncharted
30:16 for yourself and see what you think about it.
30:18 So, there's going to be a link in the description as well as one
30:20 in a pinned comment to take you straight to that site and get you all that info.
30:24 Now, as far as how it compares to the competition,
30:26 there aren't many competitors in this segment yet,
30:28 but the biggest one is the nearly identical Toyota CHR.
30:32 It strangely doesn't offer frontwheel drive and comes with all-wheel drive
30:35 as standard on the lowest SE trim that costs just $385,000,
30:40 which is over $3,000 less than this Uncharted.
30:43 And it still does get heated seats and a heated steering wheel,
30:46 but it loses the full leatherrett for a partial leatherrett and cloth combo,
30:50 and you lose the 360 camera.
30:52 But if you don't mind losing those things to save three grand,
30:55 the Toyota is easily the better deal.
30:57 And even if you want the 360 camera,
30:59 the XSSE trim gives you that for just $40,595,
31:04 about $1,100 less than the Subaru.
31:06 And loaded with the optional heated rear seats, JBL stereo,
31:09 and panoramic roof, which are alleart options on the Toyota,
31:13 which could be nice for certain buyers,
31:15 you're still only at $42,645, over $2,500 less than the Uncharted GT.
31:22 But the CHR still has no camera rearview mirror,
31:24 or ventilated seats, no matter how much you pay.
31:27 and that XSSE still doesn't give you full
31:29 leatherrett with Toyota opting for a synthetic suede instead.
31:32 So, it comes down to what you want,
31:34 but in most cases, the Toyota is the better value.
31:37 The only other two in this segment are the Nissan Leaf and the Chevy Bolt,
31:40 which will be only around for the next year or so,
31:43 so maybe not quite as much of a competitor,
31:45 but both of those are thousands less,
31:47 but they are frontwheel drive only, have much less power, and are smaller.
31:51 The last two competitors that are the strongest are the other electric Subarus.
31:55 You can get a Sultterra with all-wheel
31:57 drive for only $40,000 with similar equipment, but only 233 horsepower.
32:02 But if you don't need the speed of the Uncharted, that gives you more for less.
32:06 And for $1,000 more than this Sport Uncharted,
32:09 you can even get the loaded limited Sultterra, undercutting that GT trim.
32:13 Again, even if you want 338 horsepower,
32:17 there's the Sulttera XT that offers that and still gives
32:20 you all the same stuff for only about $1,500 more.
32:23 Lastly, the Trail Seeker is only $41,445 to start with $375 horsepower,
32:31 and it still gives you most of the same stuff.
32:34 Just no heated steering wheel on that trim.
32:36 But for all the extra space and power, the Trail Seeker is the way I'd go
32:40 and the best value of the bunch in my opinion.
32:42 If you must have the heated steering wheel,
32:45 the better stereo, and the heated rear seats,
32:47 the Limited one is still only $45,000 and mostly matches the Uncharted GT.
32:53 that's the same price other than missing out on the panoramic roof,
32:56 which you do have to go up into the high 40s to get on the Trail Seeker.
32:59 The bottom line is that the Uncharted just isn't priced low
33:02 enough compared to the others to make a case for itself, sadly.
33:05 So, it'll either come down to just getting
33:06 a better deal on it compared to the others
33:08 or someone just wanting the smaller size or fastback
33:11 profile and not worrying about the value proposition.
33:17 So, anyway, yeah, I mean, I really like the Uncharted overall.
33:20 It's a really cool package.
33:22 is cool styling.
33:24 It's, you know, nice interior.
33:25 It's a bunch of power.
33:26 It's fun to drive.
33:28 And uh, you know, coming down to pricing, you know,
33:30 that's really the only problem I have with this car.
33:33 And if you can get a good deal if you know the pricing is right,
33:37 um, you know, this is a lot of fun.
33:39 Also though, again, CHR is very fun too for, you know,
33:42 potentially less money depending on what you want.
33:44 But especially if like you must have ventilated
33:46 seats and you can't get that in the CHR,
33:48 it's really great that you have you know the ability to get this fully
33:51 loaded version here uh with the Uncharted and um you know again with how there's
33:55 all these deals and everything you know in a vacuum this is great and if
33:59 the pricing is right absolutely you know
34:01 even with the gauge cluster you know being
34:03 a minor annoyance here and even the Ford cross traffic alert like this is
34:07 fun enough that at the right price
34:10 absolutely this is totally worth uh worth considering
34:13 and uh worth owning cuz this thing is great and you know obviously having
34:17 the Subaru and Toyota reliability here and you know the ease of use of an EV,
34:22 all the perks that come with that are are great as well.
34:25 But yeah, really happy with the Uncharted.
34:27 Definitely check out my review though of the CHR if you'd
34:29 like to see how Toyota does things and the subtle differences there.
34:33 Um and otherwise, thank you all so much for watching
34:35 this one and I'll see you on the next one.
34:37 Thanks to Subaru also for providing this vehicle to review guys today.
34:41 Take care.
