How To Get Your Partner To Camp With You (and not be miserable)
Becki and Chris
0:14 buy all right we are currently at our first camp out of the Year actually
0:19 technically the first camp out of the year was on New Year's this is the first
0:21 time we're out with the truck and the rooftop
0:23 tent this season I'm really excited I've
0:25 been looking forward to this for months she's
0:27 been talking about it all winter yeah I've
0:28 seen a lot of questions from you guys uh who want to either a try
0:32 camping for the first time but you're like
0:33 a little bit nervous or from other people
0:36 who want their partner to come camping with them I.E dude how do I get
0:40 my wife to come camping so in this video we're going to talk about how to make
0:43 camping for the first time a little bit less scary a little bit more comfortable
0:46 and how you can get your partner or your friend to come camping with you I
0:49 the passenger princess make me comfortable before we jump into it I want to say
0:53 thanks to Anor solix for sponsoring today's video
0:55 we've been using these Anchor batteries to power
0:57 our films and series for 3 years and so when they said yes to working
1:00 with us this year I was really excited I was like please let's work together I
1:04 want to make videos together and they said yes so they sent us this this is
1:06 the ankor solx c1000 with 11 ports
1:09 this thing can literally power our entire campsite like
1:12 a coffee maker an air fryer we can light our entire campsite power this fridge
1:16 it also has a built-in light a UPS or an uninterrupted power supply I was using
1:21 a heat gun with it last night so it works with that it's got a 600
1:23 W maximum solar input but we don't have the solar panel so when we're going
1:26 campsite to campsite this thing will be plugged in in the back of the truck
1:29 yeah if you're over Landing like you spend
1:30 a couple days at one campsite you drive
1:31 to the next one and by the time you get to the next one this thing
1:34 is charged again for a few days I
1:36 think it's a perfect capacity for overlanding so
1:37 if you're interested in checking out the angry
1:39 solic c1000 for your next camping trip you can check the link in the description
1:42 thank you angry solic for sponsoring today's video
1:44 when you're camping for the first time
1:46 leaving these Creature Comforts at home can be
1:48 a little bit nervy we'll say especially if
1:50 you're going into the woods or you're going
1:51 to a campsite that doesn't have power we love traveling and camping with a big
1:55 battery like this and we also use it
1:56 to power some other little creature Comfort including
1:59 an electric blanket who would have thought
2:00 to bring a heated blanket camping Becky loves camping
2:03 I probably wouldn't go camping unless Becky was
2:05 into it but I'll go with her and she's
2:07 done a very good job of keeping me comfortable kind of come up with all
2:09 these little hacks which she's going to share
2:10 with you so hopefully you can convince
2:12 your partner to go camping with you bugs are a little bit more difficult to deal
2:15 with manager we're going to finish getting camp
2:17 set up and then we're going to talk
2:18 about the benefits of car camping or overlanding
2:21 and tank [Music] camping one of the keys I feel like to having a nice
2:28 camping experience is creating a really cozy environment
2:32 for yourself and making sure you have a place to sit and eat your dinner that's
2:35 nice and also make sure that you bring enough lights so that when it gets dark
2:39 it's not dark we sinking we're sinking into the ground what do you think
2:45 of this that looks great you get a little whiff of like rubber but I think
2:50 for like a smaller kit like this is definitely a lot easier to set up
2:52 and then I do like a full table
2:54 though if you're coming out for a weekend camping
2:55 inside your car sleeping on top of your car in a rooftop tent or taking
2:59 your car to to a campsite with a tent inside either way if you're traveling
3:03 in a vehicle to Camp it's going to be a lot more comfortable because you can
3:07 carry a lot more things than if you
3:09 have to fit everything into your backpack if you
3:10 want to go camping and try camping for the first time you don't need all
3:13 of the gear if you have an SUV you can sleep in the back of your SUV
3:16 just stick a cheap air mattress in the back pull the duvet cover off your bed
3:20 you know and sleep in the back uh obviously you're going to want to watch
3:23 out for what the temperature is doing if it's going to be freezing then you're
3:26 probably going to want to be a little
3:27 bit more prepared with a proper Sleep System
3:28 it's going to help you stay warm and when it's kind of like these weird
3:31 shoulder Seasons car camping offers you protection
3:34 from the elements and it's a little bit more
3:36 comfortable because you're not out in the wind
3:38 or rain and you're kind of protected
3:40 in your vehicle you have a tent especially if it's a large one you have
3:43 a lot more space than just a teeny
3:44 tiny little sleeping tent something that I found
3:47 when you're sleeping inside a car it's really
3:48 great but it's also really tight and I
3:50 think I actually prefer sleeping in a tent because you have a lot more space
3:53 to kind of move around and if you want to bring some games and cozy lanterns
3:57 and you know a nice big air mattress you have a lot of space to kind
3:59 of spread out and when you're sleeping in a tent you get a little bit more
4:03 of a connection to Nature because you can hear everything but if you're camping
4:07 for the first time that could be really
4:08 freaky every single thing you hear you're going
4:10 to be like oh my God is it a bear is it a killer in the night
4:12 and chances are it's probably just a little
4:13 tiny like chipmunk running through the woods
4:15 but that's just something to think about
4:17 when you're deciding whether you're going to go
4:18 car camping or tank camping I need to get a snack kind of snack you got
4:21 there miss I got this little thing Miss
4:23 it's called nature Nature's Bakery brownie whole grains
4:27 dates and cocoa double chocolate my that's Nature's
4:31 Bakery e Chris I need some water hi it is me the passenger princess when
4:37 Becky started dragging me camping well she didn't
4:40 even have to ask she just knew because
4:42 we've been living together for over 20 years
4:44 she identified a lot of the things that I don't like as far as discomforts are
4:49 concerned so one of the big things for me having literally no body fat I get
4:53 cold very easily and when I get cold I'm miserable I just shut down I
4:57 turn into like the Bernie Sanders meme SC
4:59 call you almost perished at the Christmas parade
5:01 one year oh my God she dragged me to this Christmas parade okay we're not going
5:03 to talk about that I almost perished I hate being cold so she packed an electric
5:09 blanket so every time we put an electric
5:10 blanket underneath our sleeping bags and it
5:13 is very warm and toasty and I'm never
5:14 cold identify the things that your partner doesn't
5:17 like or as apprehensive about it might be something as simple as I don't like
5:21 the idea of pooping in a hole in the woods okay well we're going to bring
5:25 a collapsible toilet with a pop-up tent poop
5:28 bag so we can do business in something
5:30 that resembles a toilet did you see the powder that was inside the bag when
5:34 you use the bathroom it turns any liquids to gel you can do number one
5:39 in the bag a couple of times I think they say you can do like a few
5:42 number two I would do a one number two and change the bag we have
5:45 this little dry bag and we have a bunch of these wag bags inside so we'll
5:49 do number one usually just use the forest as our bathroom and we're doing number
5:53 two in the bag and then when we're done that bag comes out that goes inside
5:57 the other bag that I put in the bottom of the toilet that has a zip
6:00 top and then we put that in our poop shoot which is in the back
6:03 of the truck it's just a PVC tube that we've made to hold these bags
6:07 and that's the toilet situations it's a really
6:09 great solution something that I've encountered when it comes
6:11 to like people wanting their wives to come
6:14 camping going without makeup might be uncomfortable
6:17 for somebody or going without their hair
6:18 straightener might be uncomfortable let them bring it
6:20 and don't make them feel bad about it
6:21 and they're probably going to be more likely
6:23 to come out with you if they can bring the things that make them comfortable oh
6:26 staying clean a little bit of a more difficult one but it might not be
6:29 the shower itself it might just be feeling
6:32 clean and not feeling sticky it might be
6:34 something as simple as bringing some body
6:35 wipes so that your partner can just wipe
6:39 off and feel refreshed before bed and that might be enough or it might be one
6:42 of those things where you got to bring one of those Sun showers and literally
6:45 have a shower I on the other hand however can go weeks without showering I just
6:48 don't care something that I bring along with me this is actually a dog bowl okay
6:53 you might look at this and go that is so excessive because I like to wash
6:55 my face in the morning or at night if it's been humid and you want
6:58 to wipe yourself down boil a little bit of water and put it in this collapsible
7:02 bowl and then add some cold water
7:03 to it until you're comfortable with how that feels
7:06 and then you can get these little pack towels right like a face cloth dump wipe
7:12 dump wipe you know give yourself a little
7:14 sponge bath then when you're done these dry
7:16 really quickly and that will just kind of get rid of the stickiness I don't
7:21 know what that was these are unscented body
7:22 wipes something like this might help if you
7:24 don't want to do the boiling water and bring the towel wipe it down throw it
7:27 away you're done I think the thing
7:28 when it comes to Camping especially card camping
7:30 like we're not going out there to survive we're going to thrive right so what is
7:33 going to make you thrive in the woods what's going to get you out there
7:36 in nature you don't have to go out with just a tarp and sleep on the ground
7:39 like you can bring your memory foam air
7:41 mattress you can bring a heated blanket don't
7:43 let anybody make you feel bad about that when you're going to sleep in a tent
7:46 or in a car you have to manage your expectations on what that sleep is
7:49 going to look like you're in a new environment lots of different and new noises
7:52 every night is going to be different so you have to go into it knowing
7:55 that I'm probably not going to have the best sleep but how can you make it
7:59 the best sleep possible I try to mimic how I sleep at home and this is
8:03 a tip I picked up from Dan Becker if you sleep at home with two pillows
8:07 bring two pillows camping if you are a cold sleeper bring a warmer sleeping bag
8:12 we're always so busy in our day-to-day lives
8:14 when you get to Camp you're just like
8:16 kind of doing nothing I have a hard time just slowing down and being bored
8:22 in order to kind of help that Becky
8:23 like packs little activities so we'll have like board
8:26 games or activities to do and that's kind of a a good way to sort
8:30 of fill the time so you're not just sitting there like now what do I do
8:34 that's almost part of it is like forcing
8:36 yourself to sort of be bored in the woods
8:38 or in nature and that's almost like the part that sort of recharges your battery
8:42 it's not going there and then working the whole time setting up camp only have
8:46 them to tear it down because then when
8:48 you get home you just don't feel recharged that's one thing is kind of find
8:50 that balance between being busy enough but also forcing
8:53 yourself to be bored so you actually recharge
8:56 oh and something else we like to do
8:57 is movie nights so we'll actually bring an iPad I forgot the iPad she forgot
9:02 the iPad oh no I have movies on my phone though yeah so we'll we'll bring
9:06 movies on our phone or our iPad and actually watch the movies in the evening
9:10 and that's kind of one of our like final like wind down activities we'll be cozy
9:13 in our sleeping bags in our bed and then we'll watch a movie and I
9:16 forgot a sweater and she says I brought you one so Pro tip bring extra layers
9:22 of clothes for your loved one for when
9:25 the passenger princesses forgets theirs I want
9:27 you to have a good experience so you'll
9:29 keep camping with me packing list absolutely integral
9:32 I'm going to run through a really basic one I'm going to leave a full packing
9:35 list on our website Becky and chris.com Linked
9:37 In the description layers you want to make
9:39 sure whatever is happening outside you're prepared
9:41 for a little bit colder and you're prepared
9:42 for rain even if there's no rain in the forecast make sure you bring a sweater
9:46 long pants socks comfy Camp shoes a rain coat for sure just in case Sleep
9:51 System you're going to want to make sure you have an air mattress some kind
9:53 of blanket that is going to be warm
9:55 enough for the temperatures that you're in a pillow
9:57 definitely a headlamp if you're only going to bring one but I like to bring
9:59 a ton of Lights as you'll see so something to cook with something to boil water
10:03 with you're going to want to bring water
10:05 food snacks extra snacks just in case you're
10:08 hangry prepping food ahead of time is also
10:10 really helpful we'll talk in a little bit
10:12 about meals and meal ideas and also if your partner isn't is new to this don't
10:17 expect that they're going to know exactly
10:19 what they're going to need to bring camping
10:20 so if you have been camping make sure
10:23 that they are bring in the appropriate things
10:24 if it's your first time then definitely
10:27 you'll find that you're going to bring more
10:28 things and then pair it down the next time you go and the next time you
10:31 go and then you'll kind of get it dialed in I have the heated blanket
10:34 put in the tent there now we can run this 12vt heated of blanket all night
10:38 long doesn't draw a ton of power so we have plenty of battery in the morning
10:42 left to do the things that we want to do so go down to 12° C
10:46 tonight but it acts perfectly as just
10:48 a pad underneath our sleeping area it's getting
10:51 dark the temperature is dropping and I am
10:53 Rusty when it comes to Camping because I
10:55 did not bring a toque which was a big huge Noob mistake given that it's
10:59 going to be about 12° C tonight Play What a toque is oh a toque is
11:03 a beanie like a hat like a winter hat Chris is just getting our lights
11:06 wired up we're going to do a whole video on how we're wiring these lights up
11:09 but that's for a separate time not only did I forget our beanies but I also
11:14 forgot our nalene bottles one of my favorite
11:16 little hacks for camping especially when it's cold
11:19 out is right before bed I will boil water put it in an aling bottle
11:23 make sure the screw the top is on tight as long as you don't fill it
11:26 all the way to the top you leave a bit of an air gap check
11:28 it to make make sure it doesn't leak and I'll stick that down on my sleeping
11:31 bag and that will keep me warm pretty much all night and it's really great
11:34 if it's below 12 Cel because it acts like a little hot water bottle and we're
11:39 not quite ready for dinner yet so I think we're going to put a fire
11:42 on probably just a small one for a couple
11:45 hours enjoy that want me plug the lights
11:53 in yeah yeah wow so normally when we're camping we're not using this much power
12:03 we're just coming in plugging our lights doing
12:05 a few tasks around Camp we're not running power tools or anything like that like
12:08 we were today so not a representative sample
12:11 but nonetheless enough power to do any task
12:13 that we've thrown at it so far all right
12:16 it's just about time for us to hit the sack we're going to plug
12:19 in that heated blanket and get that preheating
12:21 heated blankets plugged in and now we Boop power
12:26 so let that preheat maybe for 20 minutes or so R and toasty when we go
12:30 to bed let's have a quick chat about
12:31 meals if you're coming camping for the first
12:33 time and you're going out there and if you don't like cooking at home you're
12:37 going to hate cooking out here because it
12:39 is so much more difficult when it comes
12:41 to food prep cleaning your hands washing dishes it's a lot of work if you
12:45 really like cooking at home you might like cooking out here we really do we like
12:49 to do open fire cooking we've made a couple of fun meals in our series
12:52 Sleepy Creek these freeze-dried meals are kind
12:54 of expensive they're like between $8 and $12 per
12:57 packet we tend to find that if we are really hungry one packet even though it
13:01 says two servings feeds one person the freeze
13:04 dry meals are really easy cuz all you
13:05 have to do is boil water put the water in the bag and then Stir
13:08 It Up make sure it's stirred up really well and then wait to whatever it says
13:11 on the back and then it's cooked some of my favorites I really like the mac
13:14 and cheese I like be strong enough I like chicken Nole casserole what are some
13:17 of your favorites those ones are really
13:18 good the chicken fajita Bowl when you soup
13:21 it with fresh ingredients I think that's that's
13:23 a good bang for your buck but she'll
13:24 take tortillas from home avocado cheese sour
13:28 cream anything basically you want on a fajita
13:30 but instead of bringing raw chicken out camping
13:33 a bunch of peppers cutting that up I will
13:34 take the freeze-dried fajita Bowl which has
13:38 chicken Peppers rice and then we'll take that and put it on tortillas and then
13:43 it becomes a bigger meal you could get away
13:45 with one bag per two people and make about six smaller faitas and that kind
13:50 of stretches that meal it's great hack it
13:52 feels like a fresh meal and doesn't feel like
13:54 a freezer meal at all but yeah if you don't like cooking at home you're
13:56 definitely not going to like cooking outdoors
13:58 and so sometimes freeze dried meals are just simple
14:02 and they're pretty good some other things
14:03 that you can make if you don't mind getting
14:04 a pot dirty obviously crafted or macaroni
14:06 and cheese anything you can make in a pot
14:08 a couple of weeks ago we we found a flank steak that was $5 and we
14:12 took that out here and we made noodles that were just kind of like instant
14:15 style noodles and then we put the steak on top of that so there's lots
14:17 of ways that you can hack grocery store items and find little cuts of meat if
14:22 you're open to cooking that meat out here the other option is cook it at home
14:26 and bring it out in cooler or refrigerator
14:29 like hot dogs hamburgers over the fire
14:31 little pizzas that we'll just make on our stove
14:34 top or my favorite bringing the cowboy
14:36 steak out in the woods and cooking it over the fire yeah that that's a little
14:39 bit more excessive but also super fun to do none of those things sound appealing
14:44 to you run to the grocery store and pick up a sandwich and throw it
14:46 in cooler I think it's bedtime it's like 9:00 we're both really tired and ready
14:51 to go to bed it's supposed to rain
14:53 overnight and into tomorrow shall we yep [Music] literal
15:04 night Freight in the flesh here D just getting a coffee going here now it
15:09 rained all night long it was very windy
15:12 when you're camping in the woods and it's windy you have to really be careful
15:15 about where you're camping where you're setting up
15:17 your tent to if there are any dead
15:18 trees around that could potentially fall in that wind
15:21 land on your tent and kill you I wanted to try out the grinder because
15:25 I'm planning on hosting a couple of my friends down here uh for a camp out
15:28 and obviously hand grinding uh each individual cup
15:31 of coffee is just not going to cut
15:32 it don't like that grinder though I'll probably
15:34 bring a different one I like that it
15:35 was very relaxing in the rain it was like I didn't think it was too
15:40 windy we have never put away this tent
15:43 when it's been dry every single time we've
15:45 camped and it it was rainy season in fall and even when it was dry
15:48 in the morning everything was still wet because
15:50 we had condensation cuz it was so cold and today's no different as soon as we
15:53 started packing and it started pouring you
15:54 have no idea how handy a roll of paper towels you you might think oh we'll
15:58 have a couple meals we'll just have some napkins no bring a roll of paper towels
16:02 stuff gets so dirty sometimes especially if you
16:05 get caught in the rain like this things
16:06 get muddy and if you don't have like a towel with you or anything like
16:10 that then you're going to want to have paper towels we're about to get our hands
16:13 super muddy while we get these Max tracks
16:14 out the max tracks are great for leveling your truck but you could also get
16:17 these like blocks that you could level your truck
16:19 on Amazon for way cheaper than Max tracks but we got Max tracks because we're
16:22 using them for Recovery as well as leveling
16:24 the truck when camping thank you guys so
16:26 much for watching thank you aner for sponsoring
16:27 today's video and we will see you
16:29 next Sunday for another one bye I am sure glad that I got new tires cuz
16:39 it is really slippery down here it's buggy
16:43 there's bugs in the woods actually the wind
16:44 just kind of picked up and they're a little bit less yeah excuse me manager
16:52 manager I'd like to make a complaint
16:55 to the manager there's bugs I look like like
16:58 look at my face why am I on camera like this cuz I don't care page
