2:14 if you look at 2010-ish Luke Bryan got so hot and Florida Georgia Line,

2:20 that was kind of the in my mind sort of the birth of the bro country era.

2:26 And that was kind of the new flavor for shoot,

2:28 it has been for the last decade and a half.

2:32 a bunch of guys that have come along in between that have uh you know,

2:36 been more if you want to call it traditional country

2:40 as I knew it and grew up and loved it.

2:43 Um But, that was kind of the, you know, that was the thing.

2:47 That was the trend and has been, you know, you know, Morgan Wallen,

2:51 more hip-hop influence kind of country stuff and he's, you know,

2:54 after the ball cap and it's not cowboy at all.

2:57 Um but, you know, it's kind of it's kind of making a comeback, I suppose.

3:07 I think I think LeAnn fell in love with it first,

3:09 but only because it was it was I I don't I get little territorial over music.

6:00 me and Demetri Martin would go to the Comedy Cellar at 12:10 every night Yeah.

6:05 And I it was what he did I don't think there's an equivalent for it.

6:14 because you guys are so good at collaborating and so good

6:18 at these writer camps that when someone's super talented like saying

6:30 you know like you got to do your own you got to be doing you.

7:51 I'm in Music City now and I don't need to work construction anymore.

7:54 I'm going to be playing every night.

7:56 This you know, this is my new life.

7:57 And he was like, why don't you keep working construction?

8:00 We'll write a few days a week, but you don't need to be playing around town.

8:04 I was like, what the hell are you talking about right now?

8:07 I'm in Nashville.

8:08 I want to play and sing and

8:09 Everyone wants to be famous and it's and it's no fault of all of us.

8:13 But everyone wants fame.

8:15 Everyone wants to sprint before they know how to walk.

8:17 Yeah.

8:18 And especially when you're watching other people that are like sort

8:21 of your peers that kind of it's like maybe they're taking off

8:24 a little bit before you and you get kind of like

8:26 a little competitive I don't know if jealousy is the right word,

8:29 but like it's like I want to be doing that too.

8:32 Um and so it was it was I did not appreciate the advice at the time.

8:37 I didn't like it, but I kind of bought in on he had such a you know,

8:41 great resume, loved everything he worked on and you know,

8:44 obviously had seen this

8:46 And for anyone listening casually right now that goes wait wait

8:48 wait how wait how long had you been working in music?

8:50 Since you were[ __] seven.

8:52 You were they call you the white Selena.

10:47 but let's take a second and[ __] go down on bluegrass.

10:52 How great is bluegrass?

10:53 Oh, man.

10:55 [snorts] It's amazing.

10:55 I mean, obviously just musically, for me,

10:57 I think one of the most valuable things

10:59 about it was that that I could start getting

11:02 on stage and start learning how to work a crowd and be engaging for a whole set,

11:10 uh you know, in between the songs as much as the songs themselves.

11:14 And you know, there's if you think about country music,

11:16 there's not many bars that'll let you get up

11:18 and do a set when you're seven years old.

11:19 So, that that kind of family-friendly nature that bluegrass was,

11:24 where we just go around I was every weekend every summer for us,

11:27 um was just all the bluegrass festivals that were within driving distance.

11:31 We go hit them and we get up on an open mic when we were little still,

11:35 you know, we weren't being hired or nothing, but we would That was the routine.

11:38 We pull in on a Friday afternoon with the the RV and Dad would go sign us

11:42 up for the open mic and he's He'd come running back and set up the RV and like,

11:46 "All right, y'all are on in 20 minutes." Dad,

11:49 you signed us up again and anyway, yeah, that was kind of our routine.

11:53 So, that was uh it would I got a nice early start on what you know,

11:58 whatever putting in your 10,000 hours or whatever.

12:00 Um Bluegrass festivals.

12:02 singing and playing but also that being in front of a crowd

12:05 and behind a microphone and learning how to work that.

12:07 And and there's a collaborative effort and so I used to play music.

12:14 Yeah.

12:14 But not I'm never great but one of the coolest

12:16 things ever as a as a young guitarist

12:19 and and someone who was inexperienced was to go

12:21 to a bluegrass festival and get into a tent Yep.

12:23 and get into a group where everyone's playing together.

12:26 And for me the very first time I ever did it I was not very good

12:31 Yeah.

12:31 and it was just playing E C E D and A

12:35 Yeah.

12:36 and just catching up with everyone and and learning

12:38 it's so silly but it's so rewarding Yeah.

12:41 to just play and watch the guy next to you and it's

12:44 enough people that they can't hear you and if you don't know what

12:47 you're doing you just slow down a little bit or don't strum as hard.

12:50 Yep.

12:51 It's so enjoyable.

12:52 Oh, it's uh Blacksburg, West Virginia.

12:57 Yeah, that was a lot more bluegrass country than than where I came from.

13:01 It's kind of funny to me that we had as much

13:03 or do have as much bluegrass as we do way up in Washington.

13:12 I was probably 10 or 12 or something.

13:15 Um and one of my favorite bands growing up

13:19 Blue Highway and they were all these you know,

13:21 guys in their 40s and 50s had been doing it a long time had a bunch of you know,

13:26 hit bluegrass songs.

13:27 Um and I just thought they were larger than life and we

13:30 played this uh we got to do this one festival in Wenatchee,

13:34 uh Washington, and they came out and were wandering the campgrounds.

13:39 You know, that's how it goes.

13:40 You Everybody watches all the shows all night

13:42 and then they're done by 10, maybe 11:00,

13:45 and then everybody goes to the campground and the, you know,

13:48 the jam tents start.

13:49 Um and so that [clears throat] was That was what I lived for.

13:52 That was only time I was allowed to stay up that late, you know.

13:54 My parents would just turn me loose.

13:56 I'd come wandering back in the RV at 4:00 in the morning and sleep

13:59 for a couple hours and get up and do it all over again.

14:01 But these Blue Highway guys came over,

14:04 saw our little jam, me and some of my friends.

14:06 We were all young and what not, and they,

14:09 you know, stopped by, listened for a little bit,

14:10 and then they sat down and played with us some, and um that's, you know,

14:14 I think that's one of the things about bluegrass, too,

14:17 that's really cool that you don't get in a lot of other

14:19 genres is that the the stars of the genre are so accessible.

14:24 Yeah.

14:25 Uh and, you know, kind of they want to um help the or or just take

14:31 an interest in younger people trying to figure

14:33 it out and trying to do what they're doing.

14:36 How much How much do you feel I I feel like you're you're a little young

14:40 in in my opinion for the group that's for the group that is you guys right now.

14:46 I feel like you're at you're still at the young age.

14:47 Like I feel like I'm I feel like there's got

14:49 to be people jealous of how much time you got left.

28:29 I was at I was at the Daytona 500.

28:31 We did a party for the Daytona 500.

28:34 And uh Ernest Ernest did it.

28:36 Uh it was it was huge.

28:38 And they said, "We have a gift for you." And I said,

28:42 I was in the middle of I was in the middle

28:44 of meeting the guy that killed Osama bin Laden.

28:47 [laughter] I swear to God.

28:47 And they go, "We have a surprise for you." I go,

28:49 "Is he better than the guy who killed Osama

28:51 [laughter] bin Laden?" Cuz the guy By the way,

28:52 not only not only did he kill Osama bin Laden,

28:54 but they got the best storyteller in the world to kill Osama bin Laden.

29:29 your your siblings are all doing very well and very busy now,

30:33 We're all a year and half apart.

30:35 Mama played bass.

30:36 That's right.

30:37 Daddy played cello.

30:38 Mom did play a little bit of bass.

30:39 We had That's the funniest thing.

30:41 My parents were not musical at all.

30:43 Um Lykken, that's the oldest one, she was kind of the first one to she really

30:48 fell in love playing piano and like classically trained pianist.

30:51 Um we I remember us going around when I was real little,

30:55 we she would have competitions, recitals, whatever.

30:57 We'd travel around a good little bit in the Northwest um for her doing that.

31:01 And so then when all of us kids were

31:04 getting to be 3 or 4 years old or something,

31:06 she started kind of teaching us how to plink around on the piano a little bit.

31:10 And I didn't I just didn't like that music.

31:15 I didn't want to play Beethoven or Chopin.

31:17 I liked George Strait and Marty Robbins, so I needed a guitar to play that.

31:22 So I didn't I kind of uh got dragged kick

31:26 kicking and screaming for a little while through piano lessons.

31:28 I wish I had I really wish that I had kind of Is that the family?

31:33 No, that is not.

31:34 That is me in the middle, but [laughter] Where'd you go, GUYS?

31:38 WELL, THAT'S THAT'S NO, THAT'S IF HE WAS BLACK, that would have been racist.

31:41 That's Muffin and Hi over there, but yeah, no.

31:44 [laughter] If it'd have been Asian,

31:45 that would have been racist as[ __] Oh, those are your family?

31:48 No, those are just Asian people.

31:50 They just pulled up a group of of of so of Southern white people

31:55 and they're like came to a show and got in a meet and greet line.

32:00 But yeah, we uh there's not all that many pictures

32:03 of us like from back in the day playing shows and whatnot.

32:08 Uh but anyway, we did that and then yeah,

32:12 when I was 5 uh took my first guitar lesson and we all kind of

32:17 But now you play the guitar right-handed or left-handed?

32:19 Well, I was left hand I'm left-handed in most everything,

32:22 so my parents got me a right-handed guitar cuz they

32:25 didn't know it made a difference and I didn't either.

32:26 So I'd just strum the thing backwards holding it left-handed.

32:30 So the first lesson I took, the teacher was like, "Well,

32:32 let's flip this around here and see if that works better." And okay, whatever.

32:36 Hendrix?" Yeah, yeah, exactly.

32:37 That would have been cool.

32:39 Um, but now I'm just regular.

32:40 Um, but uh, yeah, started that and we all

32:45 kind of started playing music independently of each other.

32:47 We were all Maddie started playing fiddle.

32:49 Jordan started playing uh, mandolin.

32:51 Well, he started off on the chopsticks.

32:53 He was too little to to play anything.

32:55 So, he just literally had two dowels and he just click them together Really?

33:00 in time with the beat.

33:00 Yeah.

33:01 So, that was his job for a little while.

33:03 And then uh, yeah, he got a little bit bigger,

33:05 you know, just strong enough hands he could uh, play the mandolin.

33:08 So, and then Lake and played bass.

33:10 Uh, so we weren't trying to be a band or anything.

33:14 And then yeah, got offered to you guys want to open the Patsy Cline show?

33:18 And yeah, I guess we can try.

33:20 And so we learned some songs together and then that was the birth of the band.

33:24 We ran that around till I was 17, I guess.

33:28 Um, [clears throat] so yeah, did all that.

33:31 They And like I said, 17 is like what, 2015 for you?

33:35 Yeah, two Yeah.

33:36 Yeah, 2015 when we played our last show.

33:39 because I'm trying to figure out I'm trying to figure out when

33:42 you moved to Nashville base versus when you Yeah, like on a timeline.

33:47 So, like you're 17 is God, you're Yeah, you're still young as[ __] Mhm.

33:53 Mhm.

33:53 So nice.

33:54 Yeah, yeah.

33:57 [laughter]

33:57 It uh, yeah, did that.

33:58 Moved it.

33:58 My sisters were going to Colorado.

34:01 Yeah, that's the other thing is like part of your story that's like

34:05 you dodged so many like so many times you should have just quit.

34:11 Yeah.

34:11 Like meaning like you know, you got the family together and then everyone starts

34:15 to go apart and then you stick with it.

34:16 And then and then you you uh, you're What does your dad say?

34:20 You got to go, you know,

34:21 maybe get a just like a job to just in case you can do this on the weekends.

34:25 You're like, great.

34:26 And then you go to[ __] Boulder where everyone [snorts]

34:29 Who the[ __] follows a dream once you get to Boulder?

34:31 You're like, this is the dream.

34:33 I'm going to smoke weed and bang chicks with hair under [laughter] their arms."

34:36 There are they call it men verb [snorts] because there's so many studs.

34:41 That's that is like but but all these times and then you still follow the dream.

34:47 Yeah.

34:47 Yeah, I couldn't get away from it.

34:49 Um Yeah, did I don't know what the uh the thought process

34:56 was dropping out of school a year away from finishing the degree,

34:59 but I just I started dating a girl and so started going to a lot less class.

35:04 So uh grades dropped a good bit and then uh I was going to have

35:07 to retake one class and then at that time

35:10 started posting some of those uh you know,

35:13 Facebook videos and started getting a little bit of attention on that.

35:16 And so I just like, "You know what?

35:17 I'm spending all this money I didn't have no scholarships or nothing.

35:20 I'm spending all this money on out-of-state

35:22 tuition getting this degree that the further along

35:25 I got in it the job opportunities that I was presented with were like, "No,

35:30 it sounds horrible." And so I just all right,

35:34 I'm going to go work construction and save up some money and move

35:37 to Nashville and maybe I'll live in a cardboard box when I get there.

35:40 I don't know, but we'll figure it out.

40:02 if you've heard of a guy named Daryl Singletary,

40:04 but he was Middle linebacker for the Bears in the '80s.

40:08 yeah, [laughter] yeah, exactly.

40:09 That's Michael, my bad.

40:09 Yeah, Daryl uh no, Devin Singletary.

40:12 He's a running back.

40:13 Um Anyway, Daryl Singletary one of the best

40:18 voices we've had since Merle Haggard and George Jones.

40:21 And he passed away kind of early.

40:25 He's probably I think he was in his 50s or something.

40:27 Anyway, that was spring of 2018 and I posted a video covering one of his songs.

40:32 I was a huge fan of him and posted a video the day that the news came

40:36 out that he died and that was the first thing that kind of blew up for me.

40:40 It got like 300,000 views on Facebook or something.

40:42 Before that it was if I got 5,000 it

40:45 was like a big deal and it's pretty exciting.

40:47 So, got that and then started getting some calls from Nashville

40:53 and from the I did a brief stint with the the Voice.

40:59 Went through the whole audition process up

41:01 to the right before I did the blind audition.

41:05 I had a lawyer buddy of mine looking at the contract

41:10 that I had to sign and he was like, man, this seems like a bad deal.

41:13 You should not sign this.

41:15 And so I was like, all right, whatever.

41:17 I guess I won't then.

41:18 And and I had already met Carson at that point,

41:21 too, and so he was advising me the same thing.

41:23 Anyway, got started getting calls from Nashville

41:28 guys and it was like shyster types.

41:30 Their pitch was if you can come up with $20,000,

41:33 you come to Nashville and we'll cut you a record and make you a star.

41:36 And That's I want everyone to hear that.

41:39 Yeah.

41:39 If it's too good to be true, it's too it's too good.

41:42 Yeah.

41:42 Like that that's That's not how it works.

41:45 how it works.

41:46 And I was I didn't know how it worked, but I knew that was not how it worked.

41:50 I I always say anyone who's saying like,

42:42 And then I was like pissed.

42:43 I was like, "Buddy, I've known you for[ __] 15 years.

42:46 You talk[ __] some dirt.

42:47 And then Leanne went I was with Leanne and Leanne goes, "No,

42:50 that means he doesn't talk[ __] about you also." And I went,

42:53 "Oh, cool." That's good.

42:54 I like you, Halston.

42:55 But but I I used to say to Halston uh I'd send them the stuff and I'd say,

42:59 "I'll send Halston to your house to set it

43:01 all up and show you how to hit play record, show you how to do it.

43:04 And when you're ready, I'll introduce you to the people, they'll give you money.

43:08 They'll they'll all introduce you to the people.

43:10 Yeah.

43:10 Not the guy that's going to[ __] you for 50%.

43:13 And that's how music that's how art should be.

43:17 Yep.

43:17 And and when I yeah and that And it's it's like

43:21 the guys used to hang out at the mall and be like,

43:23 "Let me get you to I you should be a model." That was like

43:26 back in the '80s and yeah and then they just[ __] them and yeah.

43:30 [laughter] Yeah, it's you're exactly right.

43:33 If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

43:35 And that was that was how I felt with that.

43:37 Anyway, right in that time period, Carson Chamberlain reached out to me.

43:44 He sent an email and didn't say anything.

43:47 He's like, "Hey, my name's Carson Chamberlain.

43:50 Been in the music business a while.

43:52 Like to talk to you about maybe working together.

43:54 Not much for toot my own horn,

43:55 but you can probably look me up if you

43:58 want to." And I didn't pay any attention to it.

44:00 I had already taken a bunch of calls

44:01 and answered a bunch of emails and was just like,

44:03 "This is all bullshit." And so anyway, I just kind of ignored it.

44:07 He he got me cuz I so badly want to Google him right now and go Oh,

44:12 it's it's a good rap sheet he's got.

44:13 Yeah, I know anyone It's really interesting.

44:18 thing.

44:44 "Really?" And they're like, "No." Yeah.

44:46 He It was a college gig.

44:48 Adam Sandler was part of the It It doesn't count.

44:51 If you but if you can Yeah,

44:52 if you've ever just been slightly associated with the person.

44:55 I met him at an after party from an award show.

44:58 Yeah, I worked with Keith Urban.

45:00 You know, it's you can play it up to be a lot more than it is.

45:04 And when they when it feels like they're playing it

45:06 up and trying to sell you on it too much,

45:08 that's like you should start to be wary a little bit.

45:11 And so what what year is this that you moved to Nashville?

45:14 I moved there full-time in March of '21.

45:18 I started um It was funny.

45:20 In 2019, I Yeah, there's old Carson there.

45:25 That's the most up-to-date picture we have on that man.

45:29 That's probably from back in like 2004 or something that that picture is from.

46:51 He released it online when online wasn't what it was and it exploded.

47:01 into Wilco and then I discovered Uncle Tupelo and Uncle

47:03 Tupelo is what you would say is a progressive

47:06 country or new country or whatever they call it.

47:08 Yeah, yeah, yeah.

47:09 But um that and that was my introduction [clears throat]

47:11 and it's and I and that was like my gateway.

47:15 Yeah.

47:15 But but I would love to know I never lied like

47:19 I would love to see that all That's fascinating to me.

47:25 The funny thing is a a lot of those things are not as sexy

47:30 as like the story behind it for real is not as sexy as yeah,

47:35 I've been asked a million times and it's like I don't remember

47:39 that much about the day other than remembering when we were done with it.

47:44 I was like I love this song.

47:46 This is one of the yeah,

47:48 one of the ones I was most proud of to that point and still to this point.

47:53 Did you feel like did you does it

47:55 [clears throat]

47:56 Can I ask you just uh from an artist standpoint?

47:58 Mhm.

47:59 I'll say it with comedy.

48:01 Like I have a joke right now Yeah.

48:04 that I just I saw.

48:06 And then I told on stage what I saw.

48:08 But then as it grows, it gets tighter and skinnier and tighter.

48:12 And then I I[ __] something up one time

48:14 and that makes the end even better and I go, "Ooh,

48:17 oh[ __] If I added this." Do when you hear that song,

48:20 when you play that song do you feel like you're like,

48:23 "God damn it, this is airtight?" Pretty well.

48:28 We work them over really good.

48:30 And not just for that one day.

48:32 Like there's so many times.

48:34 I can't remember if that one specifically was one of them.

48:38 But there's so many times we'll have a song We

48:42 usually get a song pretty much done in a day.

48:45 But it might be 3 months later and I'll go back and like listen through a bunch

48:49 of the work tapes of stuff that we've

48:51 written and something will hit me and it's like,

48:54 "No, that's not right.

48:55 We got to It's got to be this now."

48:57 So it's there Me and Carson Carson said it first,

49:01 but we always say now it's like it's not

49:03 it's not finished until we put it out, you know.

49:05 It's you keep tweaking on it and keep getting it where you want it uh you know,

49:11 until you put it out and then it is what it is, I suppose.

49:14 Um but that one that one specifically, it was Carson's idea I believe.

49:21 Um I never lie.

49:24 Yeah, I believe it was.

49:26 And um but he and I got together a little bit early.

49:32 I loved the just the whole premise of that I'm a sarcastic person.

49:36 So the whole writing what's really a sad song, but the whole thing's a joke.

49:42 It's all you know, the punchline at the end.

49:44 Um and so that tickled me.

49:49 And And we just kind of that chorus fell out pretty quick and then

49:53 our co-writer Tim Nichols came in and we just hammered on them verses.

49:58 We were stuck on the first verse for a long time.

50:00 We got the the first that that chorus done and that's a lot of times how we

50:05 first verse?

50:06 Yeah, [clears throat] stuck on the first verse.

50:09 Something about I I threw out that first thing

50:12 was spend some time you still look like an angel.

50:14 That just felt like it's like man, that's how you kind of you know,

50:17 start a conversation with an old flame or something.

50:20 Yeah.

50:20 Uh anyway started that and then we were angels

50:24 there's not a ton of stuff that rhymes with angels.

50:26 So we were kind of stuck there [laughter]

50:28 and and I and then I ended up coming up with that uh [clears throat] heard you

50:34 doing fine got promoted back in April which is

50:36 kind of angel and April don't actually really rhyme,

50:38 but that was I was kind of proud of that.

50:42 [clears throat]

50:42 I I love just funky like when you say the right thing and it doesn't

50:47 it it saying the right thing is more

50:48 important than it rhyming perfectly in the song,

50:51 you know, if you and I'm sure you can

50:54 relate to that in joke writing and stuff too.

50:56 It's you don't have to make it just perfect.

50:58 It doesn't have to line up just right.

51:01 If it says the right thing and make somebody feel something,

51:04 that's what does it.

51:05 I used to have a joke about baby powder.

51:08 Mhm.

51:09 It's so such a dumb I mean I can't believe I'm going to share this with you.

51:13 [laughter] The I was like I used to say you want to hear something racist?

51:15 They don't make baby powder for black people.

51:19 [laughter]

51:18 I go how insensitive is that?

51:19 I go and then this is the part it's does I'll

51:22 say it and then I'll break I'll go it doesn't make sense.

51:25 Yeah.

51:25 I go how insensitive is that?

51:27 When we're white and we get a rash we put it on and it blends in.

51:30 But when a black guy gets a rash he's got to ghost ride the whip.

51:34 And by the way, I don't it I had someone say to me I don't understand that.

51:40 Yeah.

51:40 And I went what do you mean?

51:41 They go ghost ride the whip that's when you

51:42 get next to your car and run next to it.

51:43 And I go yeah, but it's like I I know, doesn't it sound funny?

51:46 Yeah.

51:46 And then I go yeah, I had Chad Daniels say to me,

51:48 I have a joke in my last special.

51:49 I go, my wife got on testosterone and it turned

51:52 her into a[ __] And I said, she's[ __] like [laughter]

51:56 I go, she's[ __] me like she's trying to give me AIDS.

51:59 And Chad Daniels comes up to me and [laughter] he goes he goes,

52:03 you know you you can get AIDS from having sex once.

52:05 And I went, yeah.

52:05 And he goes, it makes no sense.

52:07 And I went, yeah, I know.

52:08 And he goes, yeah, but like but if you're having sex with the same

52:11 person over and over again and and they're not going to give you AIDS.

52:15 They don't have AIDS.

52:16 [laughter]

52:15 And I was like, yeah.

52:16 And he goes, doesn't make sense.

52:17 And he was trying to make sense of it.

52:19 And so we I tried to change it.

52:20 We were on tour together or doing like our Fully Loaded Festival.

52:23 And I tried to change it.

52:24 And then I was like, I don't know, they're laughing.

52:26 And he goes, I know.

52:27 He goes, this it's kind of infuriating

52:29 that it doesn't make sense and they're laughing.

52:32 He goes, it's almost like you've transcended the point

52:35 of a joke is it doesn't make sense.

52:37 [laughter] She's having she's giving me having sex with me

52:40 so much like she's trying to give me AIDS.

52:41 AND THEY'RE LIKE, [screaming] AND HE'S LIKE, IT ONE TIME.

52:44 ONE TIME.

52:45 THAT'S ALL YOU HAD TO HAVE.

52:46 ONE TIME with AIDS.

52:46 THAT'S [laughter] IT.

52:47 ONE TIME.

52:49 AND BUT IT WAS it's it's so funny it doesn't It works.

52:53 I It's not perfect.

52:54 It doesn't And then it's with music it's just about the vibe.

52:58 Yeah, it's got to feel it's got to make you feel something.

53:01 It doesn't even have to feel good really.

53:02 It needs to make you feel something.

53:04 I had a song I was singing at Snoop's where it was like I drop I I he goes,

53:09 I drop rhymes like bombs.

53:11 And I thought he said potatoes in it.

53:14 And I told him that.

53:15 I was like, it's like I drop rhymes like potatoes.

53:17 [clears throat] And he goes, why would I say potatoes?

53:21 [laughter]

53:21 I said, I don't know.

53:22 And I go, but it it's always hit me like as I

53:24 was always wondering why you said potatoes, but I like it.

53:26 He goes, I didn't say potatoes.

53:29 And he goes, but you've been singing it like I drop rhymes like potatoes.

53:34 [laughter] And I was like, yeah, it just works for me.

53:36 Yeah, fair enough.

53:37 It doesn't need to make sense.

53:38 Love doesn't make sense.

53:39 No.

53:40 Most things don't.

53:42 But yeah, that was That was a funny one on that song.

53:45 And I don't remember There was Those are

53:47 like the specific things I remember about that song.

53:51 And the rest of it is like it wasn't

53:53 a super super memorable day to me other than

53:56 just when we finished that song and made

53:58 the work tape on it and listened back to it.

54:00 I was like, I freaking love that song.

54:02 And the other funny thing about it, I didn't think it was a hit.

54:06 I cuz a lot of my favorite songs that from different artists are not the hits.

54:12 It's go back into That's a great That's a great game to play.

54:15 Yeah, go back into, you know,

54:17 deeper stuff and there's like often times

54:19 the hit is the most like commercially sing-along-able,

54:24 you know, kind of easily palatable type of song.

54:27 And the really really interesting stuff that, you know,

54:31 catches your ear in my mind is is stuff that's like it's

54:36 a little It's almost too interesting to be a big commercial hit.

54:39 Um Yeah.

54:41 Wait, what's Wait, go through [clears throat] um go through

54:45 like songs by artists that you love that no one liked, but that's your song.

54:51 Yeah.

54:52 Um I One that comes to mind uh is

54:57 George Strait Rocking in the Arms of Your Memory Tonight.

55:00 That's a song that like I don't even know if it

55:04 quite makes sense and you don't know exactly what the story is.

55:10 And I've always loved that in songwriting,

55:11 where they give you enough of the story

55:14 that you can kind of finish it however you want.

55:17 The way the thing goes, the the guy's lost his woman and it kind

55:22 of makes it sound like she might have died,

55:24 but maybe she just left him or maybe he screwed it up.

55:28 There's a thing The only thing that makes it feel like he

55:32 might have screwed it up is I think it's the third verse.

55:35 Um um Took you to a party or was it to a nightclub?

55:41 I forget.

55:43 Um Been 20 years and counting, drowning in your love a little more each day.

55:49 But somewhere in the neon lights, I'm holding on for dear life,

55:54 rocking in the arms of your memory tonight.

55:58 And that that whole song is so you don't know exactly how to feel about it,

56:04 but it makes you feel a lot of stuff.

56:06 And that never hit for him,

56:08 but I think one of the most interesting songs where

56:11 you kind of it gives you enough of the story

56:14 that you can piece the rest of it together

56:16 however you want to feel it or hear it.

56:19 And so that's a great one to me.

57:27 It's like it's But I I wonder if it's hours spent [clears throat] or if it's,

57:30 you know, a gift that you get in childhood.

57:34 Yeah, I I would imagine it's a combination of both.

57:38 That yeah, I mean you've spent your your career,

57:41 your all your energy and time like being a student of the game

57:46 and developing your own thing and you're so deep in it that yeah,

57:50 you're going to recognize a ton of stuff that the casual

57:54 listener that's like ha funny joke, I like comedy.

57:57 I'm not going to pick up on all that stuff.

1:46:14 it just gets miserable and there's like It's too hot to play golf.

1:46:18 and that's supposed to be the summer time activity.

1:46:19 So, that wears on me a bunch.

1:46:22 And then in the winter, we don't even get snow.

1:46:24 It's just gray and it's cold enough that it's

1:46:27 miserable and you just get a lot of rain.

1:46:29 You never see the sun and so you get depressed.

1:46:31 Um I loved like living in Colorado, being a ski bum.

1:46:36 We All the off days If we had snow days where we couldn't work,

1:46:41 it was you know, straight to the mountain.

1:46:43 That was beautiful.

1:46:45 And And you can In Colorado, there can be 4 ft of snow and it's 25° out,

1:46:52 but the sun is shining and you can hang out in a t-shirt.

1:46:58 So, I I feel like at some point I'll I

1:47:02 don't know if I'll make my permanent residence back out west.

1:47:06 Um but I I find myself wanting to spend more and more time back west,

1:47:11 whether it's Colorado or uh Washington or my family's

1:47:14 always My folks have a place in northern Idaho.

1:47:17 Um where we always used to go there for vacation all

1:47:20 growing up and stuff in the summer and we do that now.

1:47:23 There's a week every summer we go back there and just

1:47:26 hang out How much thought goes into life at your age?

1:47:30 Like cuz it's got to be complicated.

1:47:33 Because there's a part of you that uh for lack

1:47:37 of better words is always going to be a small town kid.

1:47:41 And there's a and I mean that in the in in the respectable

1:47:46 like I'm not looking to just go bang every chick out there.

1:47:49 I kind of fall in love.

1:47:50 I kind of want to have a family.

1:47:51 I kind of want to do this.

1:47:55 And and and then but you're also at the top of your game

1:48:02 at your age which very few people get into that rare air.

1:48:06 And you're in an industry where people want to make decisions for you.

1:48:22 And I I've been really fortunate to like from the jump had

1:48:28 have had just really great people to work with where they've not Yeah,

1:48:33 they they don't try to make me anything that I'm not.

1:48:38 Um And so yeah, I don't get a lot of pressure in that.

1:48:44 I feel like I'm calling the shots.

1:48:46 I don't Yeah, nobody's kind of you really need to do that.

1:48:50 Nah, you you you don't have time to go back home.

1:48:59 So yeah, I I feel like I'm yeah, I'm getting I'm 28.

1:49:25 in no great shape, but he's kept himself in good enough shape.

1:49:28 He can, you know, do all the activities that we like to do.

1:49:31 He golfs with us, you know, all that stuff.

1:49:33 We get to enjoy that together as adults.

1:49:35 So, I definitely want to be that.

1:49:38 So, I don't want to wait too long to have kids and I was

1:49:41 with a guy today that was 47 years old and he just had his first kid.

1:49:44 Yeah, that's crazy.

1:49:50 And he just had his first kid.

1:49:52 And uh Yeah, that's crazy.
