BREAKING: U.S. Strikes Iranian Facilities After Attempted Attack On Navy
The Bulwark
0:00 Hey everybody, Tim Miller from The Bull Work here.
0:01 We got some breaking news.
0:03 Uh the war is back on.
0:04 Well, for those of us, you know, who can observe reality and for whom
0:10 words have meaning and actions have meaning, uh the war is very clearly back on.
0:15 Uh seeing as we are firing at Iranian ships
0:19 and assets and Iran was firing at our ships, uh to me that is a war.
0:24 uh by any definition uh the administration uh
0:27 is desperate to described as anything other than that.
0:30 Um but uh we have kinetic action, whatever you want to call it,
0:36 um this evening uh over in the straight of Hormuz.
0:39 I want to just kind of give you a little
0:40 timeline of what happened uh and run it down here.
0:44 Um we're taping this at about 8:00 Eastern time.
0:48 Uh, so you know, if there are ongoing developments,
0:50 uh, we'll obviously be monitoring them along with you.
0:53 And before I actually read all this, subscribe to the feed if you hadn't.
0:57 Okay, we're up here doing this for you.
0:59 Do us a solid and subscribe to the feed.
1:01 We're going for 2 million.
1:02 All right.
1:02 Jen Griffin, the last real reporter at Fox News,
1:06 uh, posted this a little bit ago.
1:08 New US military just carried out strikes on Iran's Kasham port and Bondar Abbas.
1:16 uh senior US officials tell her um they also
1:19 told her this is not the restarting of the war.
1:21 One thing that these guys are very good about messaging
1:25 wise is telling people that they're not in the war.
1:29 They've not been very good about explaining their objectives.
1:32 They haven't been very good about explaining their strategies.
1:34 They haven't been very good about, you know,
1:37 using uh traditionally grammatically correct sentences,
1:42 you know, subjectverb predicate.
1:43 They're not very good at any of that.
1:45 that they are they're all singing from the same hymbook.
1:49 This is not a war.
1:50 We're still ceasefiring.
1:51 We're firing but also ceasefiring.
1:53 Um you'll see that as we move on.
1:55 So So that was Jen Griffin had that first.
1:58 Still Stewart over at Reuters.
1:59 I've shouted out before guy that is important to follow closely on this.
2:03 He has this statement from uh the military.
2:07 US Central Command Sentcom uh says
2:09 that they've eliminated inbound threats and targeted Iranian
2:13 military facilities responsible for attacking US forces
2:17 uh including missile and drone launch sites, command and control locations
2:20 and intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance nodes.
2:24 That sure sounds like a word to me.
2:26 Um the military added that Iran had launched multiple missiles
2:30 drones and small boats at these three US Navy destroyers.
2:34 uh the Truckton, the Peralta, and the Mason.
2:36 Uh they were tra uh transiting the Straight of Hormuz as part of the on again
2:42 off offagain project freedom uh getting boats out of the straight of Hormuz.
2:46 Uh so these destroyers were fired at uh for being in the straight
2:51 or on obviously trying to demonstrate they still have control of the strait.
2:56 Um those destroyers were were transiting from the straight of Hormuz
2:59 or through the straight of Hormuz to the Gulf of Oman
3:02 uh when they were attacked uh and then uh we uh
3:06 fired back at the Iranian assets that were attacking our destroyers.
3:10 It's just kind of a silly aside.
3:12 I like my one of my criticisms of the West Wing back in the day was like
3:17 in order to make the show work when
3:19 there were like big announcements like this, like we
3:20 had a war and here's what happened
3:21 in the war um like the president Bartlett or CJ
3:25 Craig would like lay out exactly what happened um
3:28 in detail so the viewers would know what happened.
3:31 But like in a in the real world like people like know what
3:34 happens from the news and so that's like not how the announcements worked.
3:38 Um, but uh, you know, now reality has imitated art because Donald Trump likes
3:43 to not only be the president of the United States,
3:46 but kind of like the nation's news anchor.
3:48 Um, like the dumbest, you know, kind of like a homeless man's Tony Dopal.
3:53 Anyway, um, he uh, gave us the details of what happened in these attacks.
3:58 Obviously, take this with a grain of salt.
3:59 This is coming from Trump, as you'll see here.
4:02 He uses some he takes some rhetorical license I think uh with what happened.
4:08 But uh here's the story of what happened to the destroyers
4:11 as told by our president on his social media feed.
4:14 Three worldclass American destroyers just transited very successfully
4:18 out of the straight of Hormuz under fire.
4:21 There was no damage done to the three
4:22 destroyers but great damage done to the Iranian attackers.
4:25 They were completely destroyed along with numerous small boats which are
4:29 being used to take the place of their fully decapitated navy.
4:32 These boats went out to the bottom of the sea quickly and efficiently.
4:36 Uh he goes on, "Missiles were shot
4:38 at our destroyers and were easily knocked down.
4:41 Likewise, drones came and were incinerated while in the air.
4:45 They dropped ever so beautifully down to the ocean very much like a butterfly
4:50 dropping to its grave." But that's official
4:54 statement from the president of the United States.
4:56 A normal country here.
4:57 He's he's you might think that the next sentence
5:00 that when he starts it with a normal country,
5:02 he he's kind of like contrasting what a normal country would
5:06 do versus what he was doing right here in this statement,
5:09 but that's that's not it.
5:10 He he sees himself as normal for some reason.
5:12 Uh he's critiquing Iran here.
5:14 So this is Trump continuing on.
5:16 A normal country would have allowed these destroyers to pass,
5:19 but Iran is not a normal country.
5:21 They are led by lunatics, all caps,
5:25 and if they had the chance to use a nuclear weapon,
5:27 they would do it without question.
5:28 But they'll never have that opportunity.
5:30 And just like we knocked them out again today,
5:31 will knock them out a lot harder and a lot more
5:34 violently in the future if they don't get their deal signed fast.
5:40 So there's Trump.
5:42 A lot to unpack there.
5:43 Um, you know, again,
5:46 he's trying to kind of walk this line about how this isn't really a war.
5:48 This was just another little skirmish.
5:50 Um he I guess you know he's very much the you know the everyone is 12 meme.
5:56 The president is 12.
5:58 He's very focused on the things going boom describing the things that go boom.
6:03 Um you know kind of like a deranged 12year-old.
6:08 You know he enjoys killing butterflies and insects and watching them die.
6:14 Uh so he's describing that vision.
6:16 You know something that brings him joy.
6:19 Um, and uh, I think and then he he
6:23 reverts to kind of this attack language on Iran.
6:25 You you might remember it wasn't too long ago that he's talking
6:27 about how the new leaders of Iran are actually pretty sensible guys.
6:32 You know, they're normal chaps.
6:34 We're dealing with them.
6:34 They're not crazy like the other guys that we killed.
6:37 You know, we can work with these guys.
6:38 They're smart.
6:38 And if they're smart, they'll do a deal with me.
6:40 Um, and they are smart.
6:41 So, they will do a deal with me and we'll get a deal in one to two weeks.
6:44 So, Trump's been saying for 9 10 weeks now.
6:46 And um and now you see a little
6:49 rhetorical pivot here to um they're not smart guys.
6:52 They're not good guys, better guys leading Iran.
6:54 Now they're lunatics.
6:56 Lunatics.
6:56 All caps.
6:58 And they might nuke us even.
7:01 So uh you know, if you took the president seriously,
7:05 that'd be pretty concerning.
7:06 But um since we don't, it just seems like, you know,
7:10 he's trying to do this thing where he he's trying
7:12 to be both good cop and bad cop in one person.
7:16 You know, I'm going to be nice to him,
7:17 then I'm going to try to rough him up, then I'm going to be nice to him.

8:42 Then we're back now after a period of time where
8:44 like a deal like Brett Bearer had the exclusive last night.
8:47 Let's just get this clear.
8:48 last night before the war started.
8:51 You got to trust him.
8:52 He's the straight news man at Fox News.
8:54 Brett Bayer had the exclusive.
8:56 He spoke to the president.
8:58 Uh the president's been talking to his Iranian counterparties.
9:01 And man, this deal is coming any minute now.
9:04 Uh I believe Brett said that uh he was
9:07 told that it was going to happen within the week.
9:09 We're going to have a deal.
9:11 Move in the right direction.
9:12 I had a phone call with the president uh a short time ago and he
9:16 is optimistic about this u this deal
9:20 this memorandum of understanding thinks it is
9:22 going to lead to things he's cautiously optimistic I should say um but thinks
9:27 and I asked him what the time frame would be he puts it at a week
9:31 um getting everything wrapped up
9:34 24 hours after that report by Brett Bayer uh we have destroyers
9:37 getting fired at in the straight of Hormuz we're sinking their ships.
9:43 Um, there's also some ancillary fire in the UAE.
9:46 Like, doesn't seem like it.
9:50 Doesn't seem like we're a week away.
9:52 You just keep trusting those reports from Brett Bear.
9:54 Um, so we've now gone away from that.
9:58 You know, again, last night Trump was talking to Brett Bearer about
10:01 how close we are on we're on the on the 10 yard line.
10:04 It's going to happen.
10:06 Now, it seems less a little less so.
10:08 They're lunatics.
10:10 We're going to have to knock them out again.
10:11 Now, we're not doing civilizational threats anymore, but very serious threats.
10:15 We're going to lock them knock them out a lot harder
10:18 and a lot more violently if they don't get the deal signed fast.
10:23 And um you I just want to throw this up here.
10:26 This was the best tweet of the week for me.
10:27 For any wrestling fans, you'll enjoy this.
10:30 Uh this really tickled me.
10:31 I got a big big kick out of this.
10:34 Uh this is a meme account on on social media.
10:36 Not Jerome Pal posted this.
10:38 Uh, here's a picture of Trump threatening Iran for weeks.
10:43 Is that Triple H or is that I don't know some Chris Jericho?
10:46 I think that's Triple H.
10:47 Running back and forth.
10:48 I'm going to jump on you.
10:50 I'm going to jump on you.
10:51 I'm going to give you the death drop.
10:54 You know, you're going to get pinned any minute now.
10:57 What the What?
10:59 Why is Michael just lying there?
11:01 WELL, WHY SLOW DOWN AND STOP?
11:04 WHAT IS IT?
11:05 IT'S A MOCKERY.
11:06 Since this threat, uh, Trump has done a phone call now with ABC News.
11:11 He tells them it was just a love tap that the ceasefire is still on.
11:18 So, simultaneously, we easily knocked down all of their things.
11:24 They dropped like a butterfly, dropping to its grave.
11:27 We completely destroyed their small boats.
11:30 They had a decapitated navy.
11:32 Like, that's happening.
11:32 And also, it's just little left tap.
11:34 Nothing nothing to see here, guys.
11:35 Nothing to see here.
11:36 Don't tell me it's war cuz then I might have to go
11:38 to Congress or then I might have to deal with the fact
11:39 that I've created a total disaster that I thought was only
11:41 going to be two weeks and turned out to be 10 weeks.
11:43 It's really still a ceasefire,
11:44 but we're also just kind of doing some little bombing here and there.
11:47 Just a little love bomb.
11:49 I like getting love bombed.
11:51 Um the Iranians have a little bit of a different take.
11:55 This is via Jeremy Scill.
11:56 This is a statement from the spokesperson of Iran's armed forces.
12:01 Um he said that the US has violated the ceasefire.
12:05 Uh lengthy statement uh a key part here at the end.
12:09 The criminal and aggressive America and its supporting
12:12 countries must know that the Islamic Republic of Iran
12:16 as in the past powerfully and without the slightest
12:19 doubt will respond decisively to any aggression and division.
12:24 So seems like they think they're in a war.
12:27 We'll see how this stuff all shakes out.
12:29 And I think this is there've been a little you
12:32 know there's been some action kinetic action since the ceasefire started.
12:35 This is you know the most significant uh that we've seen.
12:38 I I do think as I led um I think that all of us here who
12:44 are you know on Earth one living in reality can just call this what it is.
12:47 We are we are in a war.
12:48 The war is still on.
12:50 Um, the president might not want to be conducting the war
12:53 in the most aggressive way possible because you know he's
12:55 because he knows he's gotten himself into a total quagmire
12:58 and he doesn't really want to escalate cuz I mean he's weak.
13:04 Like again like if this was Jimmy Carter
13:05 or Joe Biden we'd know what to say about this.
13:08 The president is weak.
13:08 That's what the Republicans would be saying about them.
13:11 president is too weak to back up his talk and he's too weak to do
13:16 what is necessary to open the straits
13:18 so that people aren't suffering with higher prices.
13:22 So because he's too weak to do anything um
13:26 and because the Iranians aren't giving him what he wants,
13:29 he's just going to do these random little bombings and then
13:31 pretend like we're not in a war when we are.
13:33 So it's a state of play.
13:35 Final takeaway.
13:36 I don't know if Malcolm Nance originated this line,
13:38 but he's where I saw it, so I'll give him credit.
13:41 Um, I think that the net net of the news tonight.
13:45 Um, and what's particularly relevant for viewers in America,
13:49 but across the world who are suffering from higher gas prices
13:52 and higher prices on other uh related items, is this nacho.
13:57 Not a taco, it's a nacho.
13:59 Not a chance opens.
14:00 And that's kind of where we're at right now.
14:02 So, uh, we'll leave it there.
14:04 Um, uh, like I said, we'll continue to keep our eye on this.
14:07 Um, I'll be back and on the pod tomorrow,
14:10 of course, and discuss any additional developments.
14:14 And, um, enjoy your evening.
14:16 Subscribe to the feed.
14:18 Appreciate y'all.
14:19 We'll see you soon.
