1:11 Starting with our CPU, we've gone with an AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3975WX.

1:22 but it turns out that when we looked at the numbers from Puget Bench,

1:27 this is actually as fast as it gets

1:30 for video editing because with just 32 cores,

1:32 but turboing really high,

1:34 you get a great mix of very fast cores and also many cores.

2:44 The reason is that there's just plain more CPU under there.

2:47 So, what you're looking at on the top here is not a CPU.

2:50 This is just a big piece of copper with usually nickel plating.

2:55 The actual dies, the actual logic chips, are under it.

2:59 And so, on a consumer CPU,

3:01 you'll get like a couple of those logic chips, but on a Threadripper,

3:05 they have to be able to accommodate up

3:06 to I think it's 12 on the biggest configuration.

3:10 So, this [laughter]

3:17 So, this heat spreader here has to be able to fit all of those dies under

3:22 it because it's not like you can just

3:23 have a different socket for every different core configuration.

3:26 So, even though yours only has 32 cores, which is going to be what,

3:29 like four dies, I guess, they have to have room for a lot more.

3:33 Another thing is it has an eight-channel memory controller.

3:35 So, you have to have communication pins for all of those channels down here.

3:38 You can only make these little pads so small.

3:40 So, sometimes you can end up just like needing a bigger

3:43 CPU in order to have all of the connectivity that it needs.

3:46 So, fat is good?

3:48 Sure.

3:48 Which is why we chose the fattest of motherboards for you.

3:54 I was actually a little on the low side

3:56 when I told you how much this thing was worth.

3:58 It's closer to $1,300 US for this motherboard,

4:02 but it supports literally everything up to a 96-core CPU,

4:06 up to eight DIMMs running in an eight-channel configuration,

4:09 a full complement of seven PCIe slots at various lane widths,

4:13 not to mention more PCIe in the form of these slim SAS slots over here,

4:17 four PCIe Gen 5 M.2s, a whole whack of power inputs,

4:22 not to mention just about the most stacked rear IO that I've ever seen.

4:36 of like a workstationy commercial type of motherboard,

4:48 so that you can remote into your computer and even

4:50 do something like flash the BIOS from a remote location.

14:26 And you need to screw in that motherboard.

14:28 My general preference when I'm installing a radiator

14:33 is to have the fans in a pull configuration.

14:36 So, I like to put the fans like

14:39 this, and then screw the longer screws through them like that.

14:43 It's kind of a two-man job though.

14:45 It's a bit of a pain.

14:47 Why is he doing this?

14:48 I'm I'm just putting the bracket for the CPU cooler on.

14:51 When I heard you try to explain it before,

14:53 I got the distinct impression that you didn't understand what it was,

14:56 and therefore it might be better if I just assemble it.

14:58 So, we've got pre-installed thermal compound, which saves us some effort.

15:01 I went ahead and installed the hold-down plate on here.

15:04 So, now all Sammy has to do is put that on the CPU and screw it in.

15:08 Is there a reason why it's like flat?

15:09 I usually like AIOs are like really thick,

15:11 or like those stock coolers are like really fat, but like this is like thin.

15:15 That is actually a really good question.

15:18 The reason this one is flatter is because unlike most AIO coolers,

15:22 the pump is not in the CPU block.

15:24 The pump was actually right there.

15:26 So, you lose a little bit of your radiator surface area,

15:29 but because that sits right where the hub of the fan is,

15:34 you're losing less than you'd probably think.

15:36 And what you gain is a lower profile CPU block.
