Sint Maarten Food Culture Shock!! Dutch Food in the Caribbean!!

Davidsbeenhere

0:00 This is Phyllisburg, the capital of the Dutch side of St.

0:03 Martin.

0:03 [music] And right now, we're on Old Street.

0:05 As you can see, it looks like a very old street in Amsterdam.

0:09 You have this really old yellow car, beautiful vehicle,

0:12 and you have all these colorful buildings everywhere.

0:15 Nice souvenir shops.

0:16 What's your name?

0:19 How are you?

0:20 I follow you.

0:21 Yeah.

0:22 Yeah.

0:22 Pleasure.

0:22 Nice to meet you.

0:23 So, is this your [laughter] spot?

0:24 Yes, we work here.

0:26 Yeah, it's you.

0:26 Okay, so nice to see you.

0:28 Nice to see you, too.

0:28 enjoy the island.

0:29 Oh, I love this island.

0:31 But I have to ask you, how long have you been here?

0:33 Long time.

0:34 Yeah.

0:34 Since 95.

0:36 Wow.

0:36 So, you're officially a St.

0:37 Martinian.

0:39 Yes.

0:39 And so, you're on the from the Dutch side, I'm guessing.

0:41 Dutch side.

0:41 So, as you make your way down French Street,

0:43 you'll notice a lot of souvenir shops,

0:45 some liquor stores, a lot of jewelry as well.

0:47 There's also this.

0:48 I've never seen this in my life, and I'm a huge Star Wars fan, guys.

0:51 I love Star Wars.

0:52 Hey, the new the new movie is coming out.

0:53 Mandalorian and Grou, but this is Yoda, the Yoda guy movie museum.

0:57 Come on inside.

0:58 I think they're closed, but it's like one of the number one attractions

1:01 or it is the number one attraction in Fburg.

1:03 It's locked.

1:04 Hold on.

1:04 Let me use the force.

1:07 Lemon.

1:08 Not working, guys.

1:09 And right here we have a guava berry liquor.

1:11 This is the liquor of the island of St.

1:13 Martin.

1:14 Is made with a rare local berry, which it gets its name from.

1:17 Guava berries.

1:18 Grow wild in the warm hills in the center of the island.

1:20 And it's delicious.

1:21 Actually, you get this with a little bit of ice and it is a good time.

1:26 a really good time if you know what I mean.

1:27 Yeah, it feels a little different here.

1:29 Pretty empty.

1:30 A lot of these shops are closed.

1:32 If I went down this alley and didn't know where I was,

1:33 I'd be like, "Where am I?" And right here we have the boardwalk street.

1:37 Over here we have the beach.

1:38 Over here we have an array of shops.

1:40 We have like cigar shops, souvenir shops.

1:43 Got restaurants, bars.

1:45 All your name.

1:47 Coco Splash.

1:48 Coco Splash.

1:49 Yeah.

1:50 Ice Cold.

1:51 Ice Cold.

1:53 Yeah.

1:52 Thank you so much, bro.

1:53 Thank you.

1:54 No problem.

1:54 Here we go.

1:57 Yo, ice cold coconut.

1:58 Even here in Fraser, you're going to get this.

2:00 This is amazing.

2:01 You know, there's something about a coconut.

2:02 Every time I land in any of the islands in the Caribbean,

2:05 first thing I want is a coconut.

2:06 It literally is a vibe.

2:08 It is the feeling I get when I'm here.

2:10 It makes me relax.

2:11 Makes me feel at home.

2:14 Energy booster for sure.

2:16 Let me get that jelly.

2:19 Thank you so much, bro.

2:19 How much do I owe you?

2:21 That's three bucks on that.

2:22 Three bucks?

2:22 Yeah.

2:25 M.

2:27 This is amazing.

2:28 Wow.

2:29 It's the sweetest one.

2:30 You know what it is?

2:31 It's ice cold.

2:32 They leave it in the in the fridge or the cooler.

2:34 Keep it cold.

2:35 Let me know.

2:35 Do you love tender coconut?

2:36 I do.

2:40 I'm from Miami.

2:41 I've been dealing with hurricanes my entire life.

2:43 Saw the worst one in 1992 in Hurricane Andrew.

2:45 But the Caribbean, every single year we have hurricanes coming through.

2:48 Every island has been affected.

2:50 In 2017, Irma hit this island.

2:52 97% of St.

2:53 Martin was destroyed.

2:55 Obviously, they've rebuilt thankfully.

2:57 And you can see the same thing happened in Dominica.

2:59 The same thing happened in Jamaica recently.

3:02 So, hurricanes is part of life here.

3:03 Here in Phillisburg, you'll see buildings that have been completely

3:06 destroyed and haven't been rebuilt like this one.

3:08 To the Caribbean, you guys are always in my heart.

3:10 And to Jamaica, you know, I'm praying for you guys.

3:12 To my brothers and sisters down there, you know,

3:14 I know you were really affected a few months back,

3:16 but you know, I know you're going to recover and come back stronger than ever.

3:18 So, one thing you have to know about St.

3:20 Martin, it's all about the drinking.

3:21 We got rum, we got warm, we got beer.

3:23 Over here, we got Miguel's hot beach spot.

3:26 Over here is Dirty Sanchez.

3:28 You know what that means, guys.

3:29 And here on the boardwalk, we have Holland House Beach Hotel.

3:32 Beautiful hotel.

3:33 What a stark contrast between some of the buildings.

3:35 And this beautiful boutique hotel.

3:37 And over here, you know, more bars.

3:40 Just bar after bar after bar.

3:42 This is the place to party.

3:43 Oh, look at the dogs.

3:45 What's up, guys?

3:45 And right here we have the map of St.

3:47 Martin.

3:47 As you can see, right here is the border dividing the Dutch and the French.

3:51 What do you guys think it looks like?

3:52 Some people say it looks like a boot.

3:54 Some say it looks like a manatee.

3:56 I have no idea.

3:57 Depends on if you flip it upside down.

3:59 Looks like an alien.

4:00 Look at that windmill.

4:02 That's Dutch Blonde restaurant.

4:03 But to be honest with you, I've never seen so many of these.

4:06 What is this?

4:06 A twerker.

4:07 To be honest with you, I've never seen a place like this.

4:09 It's a little nasty.

4:10 And when I mean nasty, I mean nasty.

4:12 You have dirty stances over there.

4:14 The blue[ __] And then over here you have this tworker.

4:18 The Dutch blonde is St.

4:19 Martin's only pancake house.

4:21 And they have beer.

4:22 Pancakes and beer.

4:23 Let's go.

4:24 So, I came here for the pancakes.

4:26 I got the mullet pancakes.

4:27 So, what's inside?

4:28 It is banana, walnut, and drenched in honey.

4:31 I can't wait for this.

4:32 But they also have this incredible beer.

4:34 And the owner, Sunni,

4:36 he actually brews this right by the cruise ships right over there.

4:40 Dutch blonde.

4:41 It's a Dutch blonde.

4:42 Of course we have a Dutch blonde.

4:44 Here we go.

4:49 Wow.

4:50 Cicero misos.

4:51 If I close my eyes, I'm in Holland with a nice salty breeze.

4:55 Here we go.

4:55 Holland.

4:56 I love you guys.

4:56 Cut this amazing pancake.

4:58 Look at that beautiful honey walnut and the bananas.

5:04 Amazing.

5:04 Then you just drench it in the honey.

5:10 M the walnut, the banana, perfect combination, the honey.

5:14 M nice and sweet.

5:16 But I love the pancake.

5:18 But you know, the food's good.

5:19 But it's really about where we're eating it.

5:21 Got this incredible view.

5:22 Cruise ships, jet skis, and we have my Jamaican friends.

5:26 Perfecto.

5:29 Try my mango mñana.

5:32 Mñana tomorrow.

5:33 Guys, look at this view.

5:34 Cruise ship's leaving.

5:35 And behind it, you have another island and that's Saba right there.

5:39 going there very soon.

5:40 This is the Dutch Blonde pancake menu.

5:41 Puffer jets, you got savory pancakes, you have sweet pancakes.

5:44 I'll tell you, if you're gonna eat one thing in Phyllisburg,

5:47 try the Dutch blonde and the pancakes.

5:49 You will love it.

5:52 What a view.

5:53 I'm staying.

5:54 So, Philisburg has around 3,000 inhabitants, 7,000 in the greater area.

5:59 This place without the cruise ships becomes like a ghost town.

6:03 Look at this.

6:03 Empty.

6:04 All the restaurants over here, bars are closed.

6:06 They already packed up all the chairs for the beach.

6:09 Philber is not the greatest place in the afternoon.

6:11 Come here earlier.

6:12 I watch you all the time.

6:14 Yeah, you're amazing.

6:15 Welcome to St.

6:16 Martin.

6:17 You make me hungry every time I see you.

6:19 You're amazing.

6:20 Where you from?

6:21 Here.

6:21 St.

6:22 Martin.

6:22 So, but I live here.

6:24 If I was an alien coming from Mars, landed here in St.

6:27 Martin.

6:27 I have no idea where I am.

6:28 What would you say to them?

6:29 Like, oh, you're in St.

6:30 Martin and this is this.

6:32 Well, St.

6:33 Martin is unique.

6:34 Half French, half Dutch.

6:36 This is the best.

6:37 You can't get the best of both worlds.

6:39 I mean, this is it.

6:40 And the French side, culinary, Simpson Bay and St.

6:45 Martin culinary.

6:47 You got it all all in one.

6:49 Thank you.

6:49 Careful.

6:50 Nice to meet you.

6:50 All right.

6:50 Carissa.

6:51 Carissa.

6:51 We're going soon, guys.

6:52 We are in the Dutch side of St.

6:55 Martin and its own country.

6:58 Uh, I'm going to tell you the long story very short.

6:59 The French side is a territory of France.

7:02 The Dutch side is actually a country within the Kingdom of France.

7:05 There's Aruba, Corissal, and St.

7:08 Martin, part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and also Netherlands.

7:12 So, there's four different countries in the kingdom.

7:14 And then you have a few different places like Stacia.

7:15 We're going to Saba and Bonire,

7:17 which are like independent almost, but they're they're Dutch Caribbean.

7:21 You guys good?

7:22 Yeah.

7:22 You good?

7:23 I'm perfect, bro.

7:23 I'm perfect.

7:24 What's up?

7:25 We got a photo yet.

7:26 Let's do a photo.

7:27 Got to go quick.

7:27 What's up?

7:30 Oh my god.

7:30 What's up?

7:31 What's up?

7:31 Hi.

7:32 How are you?

7:33 Good.

7:33 How are you?

7:34 Good.

7:34 Good.

7:34 Sorry.

7:35 I'm from Guyana.

7:36 Guyana.

7:37 Guyana.

7:37 Guyana.

7:39 Guyana.

7:38 All right.

7:38 Guyana.

7:39 So, what's something special about St.

7:41 Martin?

7:41 Something special.

7:42 Something special.

7:42 The island, the beaches, a beautiful place.

7:45 The people are friendly.

7:47 Amazing.

7:47 Where's your special place here?

7:49 Uh, Maho Beach.

7:50 You say Maho Beach.

7:51 For me, it's KKO.

7:52 That where on the French side,

7:54 that beach over there in Oriental Bay, that's my place.

7:57 I'm going to disappear there for a week.

7:58 Yeah.

7:59 And last question.

8:00 Is it goat curry or curry?

8:01 Goat

8:02 goat.

8:02 Curry.

8:03 I love you.

8:03 Hey, to my Gy fan base, thank you so much.

8:05 I love you guys.

8:06 Where you from?

8:07 Where are you from?

8:07 I have to know.

8:08 I'm from Guyana.

8:09 You're from Guyana, too?

8:10 I knew it.

8:10 I knew it.

8:11 Yo, what up?

8:12 What up?

8:12 [laughter] Yeah.

8:13 Yeah.

8:14 What's the best thing and the worst thing about St.

8:16 Martin?

8:17 I can't tell you nothing worse about St.

8:19 Martin.

8:20 It is a beautiful island.

8:21 The people are very friendly and there is a lot of nice things to eat.

8:25 Hey, thank you so much.

8:26 Appreciate you.

8:27 Thank you.

8:28 Thank you.

8:28 Enjoy the island.

8:29 So, here in the Caribbean, we have a lot of casinos, but here in St.

8:32 Martin, you can only find casinos on this side of the island, on Dutch side.

8:36 Right now, there's roughly 18 casinos, and here's one of them.

8:39 I love how they put all the spikes for the pigeons.

8:42 So, as you walk down the street, you'll notice gold and gems from Shivas.

8:47 What else?

8:47 We got pelican shades.

8:49 So, you got a lot of glasses,

8:51 a lot of souvenir shops selling [music] forever souvenirs.

8:54 You got mugs, you have, you know, the magnets, t-shirts.

8:58 Hello.

8:58 And I got I'm guessing we got some more Gian.

9:02 How are you?

9:03 How are you?

9:03 Everything good?

9:04 Good.

9:04 I'm seeing on Facebook and say you're coming.

9:07 I said I'm coming.

9:08 I was at the back and I just saw I come.

9:10 I said, you know, maybe it's him

9:12 and I came up

9:13 a lot of gy on this strip.

9:15 How long you been here in St.

9:16 Martin?

9:17 20 years.

9:17 Can you tell me anything about the gy community here?

9:22 It's it's there.

9:23 We have a lot of gy.

9:26 Yeah.

9:26 Like mostly you would find in the shops they work in gy.

9:30 But I'm surprised no gy restaurant yet.

9:32 Yeah, I do.

9:33 Wow.

9:33 On the pan field.

9:34 Somebody told us you find the roti,

9:37 the pinter, the red cake, everything you will find here.

9:40 Oh wow.

9:41 Yes.

9:41 Salaro.

9:41 Yeah.

9:42 The cava ball, the egg ball.

9:44 So do you have a lot of family here or no?

9:46 No.

9:46 No.

9:47 I don't.

9:47 Just me and my husband.

9:49 And your husband?

9:51 Yes.

9:50 So you came here looking for like a better life out here compared to Guyana?

9:53 Yeah.

9:54 If you had one message to tell him, what would you tell him?

9:57 We are together for 35 years, so we would go until the end.

10:04 Yes.

10:03 I love that.

10:04 I love you.

10:05 Congratulations.

10:06 That's great.

10:06 That's amazing.

10:06 I love you.

10:07 Thank you so much.

10:08 Thank you.

10:08 Have a good time.

10:09 Enjoy.

10:10 I will.

10:10 I will.

10:12 Bye-bye.

10:12 Take care.

10:12 Take care.

10:13 Thanks.

10:13 What's up?

10:13 What's up?

10:14 You good?

10:15 How are you?

10:16 Good.

10:16 Good.

10:16 I watch your show.

10:18 Oh my god.

10:19 Yes.

10:20 Are you Trina?

10:21 No.

10:22 My husband is from Trinidad.

10:23 From where you from?

10:24 I'm from Guyana.

10:24 Oh,

10:25 okay.

10:25 Okay.

10:25 You're gy.

10:26 You've been in St.

10:27 Martin for a long time.

10:28 I've been here in St.

10:29 Martin for the past 35 years.

10:32 So, you're basically a St.

10:33 Martian.

10:33 I'm a St.

10:33 Martin.

10:34 Dutch.

10:36 Dutch.

10:36 Yes.

10:36 Officially Dutch.

10:37 Big difference between the north and the south.

10:40 It's basically the same.

10:41 But the culture of the food here, amazing.

10:44 For the small island like this, I think it's over 100 culture.

10:49 Wow.

10:51 Nationality.

10:50 So, what's your favorite spot?

10:52 My favorite spot in St.

10:53 Martin, nowhere special.

10:55 Is

10:55 it a bar or a restaurant?

10:56 It's a bar, restaurant.

10:58 Everything that you think of, it's all there.

11:00 So, what would you tell the person you love the most?

11:02 What would you tell him right now?

11:04 Babe, I'm so happy that I found you and you're a Triny and I love you.

11:08 Triny to the marrow to the bones.

11:11 We need doubles and pepper.

11:15 Uh, Alupai Sena, everything is there all in one.

11:19 Don't forget Polari.

11:20 Gy is more of Polari.

11:24 Yeah.

11:23 All right.

11:23 So, last question.

11:24 Is it goat curry or cur goat?

11:26 Curry goat all the way.

11:28 I know you appreciate Indian culture and the Korean culture a lot and

11:32 it means a lot to me.

11:33 So, thank you.

11:34 Big fan.

11:34 And where you from?

11:35 I'm from here.

11:35 Oh, you're from here.

11:36 You're from St.

11:37 Martin.

11:39 Yeah.

11:38 So, tell me something special about this island.

11:40 The most special thing to me I would say growing

11:42 up and just being in such a diverse like area.

11:47 Um I was exposed to a lot of diversity growing up

11:49 going to school here everything and it's just something that stuck

11:52 with me and the culture as well because now I live

11:55 in the Netherlands so it's like it's a little blander there.

11:59 Okay.

11:59 Okay.

11:59 Got it.

11:59 So it's always nice to come back home

12:01 and get that feeling of culture and like just togetherness.

12:05 What would you tell the Dutch people out there who have never visited St.

12:07 Martin?

12:08 What would you tell them?

12:08 that it's not Kursaw cuz always they just they just say, "Oh, is that Kursowl?"

12:14 But I feel like they don't come here too often.

12:17 No, they don't.

12:18 They don't.

12:19 Yeah.

12:20 Yeah.

12:19 So, I'm here with Wagner.

12:20 Wagner is part of Lagoon Group and uh you've

12:23 been taking around the island for the past 2 days.

12:26 Indeed.

12:25 So, what does Lagoon Group do?

12:27 Well, we are in charge of um different sectors in the in St.

12:32 Martin.

12:33 Uh we work with cruise ships, we work with where airlines,

12:35 we work with tourists in in general.

12:37 We also do uh weddings and activities and what's not.

12:41 Driving uh events, you name it, we do it.

12:44 So if you come with them, you have Wesley Sipes with you.

12:47 This looks like Blade right here, bro.

12:48 No, the glasses.

12:49 He looks like Blade, dude.

12:50 I swear.

12:50 [laughter] Hian Wesley Sipes.

12:52 I love you.

12:53 I love you.

12:53 But yeah, thank you so much, Lagoon Group.

12:55 This has been a great tour and I'm excited, man.

12:57 Thank you.

12:57 Thank you.

12:58 St.

12:58 Martin, half French, half Dutch.

13:00 And today we're visiting the Amsterdam Cheese and Liquor Store.

13:04 So what are they famous for?

13:05 Well, in Amsterdam, you eat a lot of howa or gouda cheese.

13:09 Come inside.

13:09 We're going to see them preparing some cheese for us.

13:11 But also, look, they have the clogs.

13:13 This is so Dutch, guys.

13:15 I can't even believe this, bro.

13:16 Look.

13:17 Put your feet in here.

13:18 The clogs.

13:18 You know what they say when you got big feet, right?

13:21 All right, let's go meet the owner at the end.

13:22 As soon as you walk in, it literally feels like Holland in here.

13:25 You have the clogs everywhere.

13:27 Look, you have the magnets with the clogs right here.

13:30 All the little clogs.

13:30 I love this little shoe.

13:32 And then over here, we have the cheeses.

13:34 And we have Atan.

13:36 How you doing?

13:36 Everything good?

13:37 Yes, sir.

13:38 All right.

13:38 So, he's the owner.

13:40 So, what do you guys do here?

13:41 Um, so we sell uh Dutch cheeses to anybody who loves cheese, of course,

13:45 but uh we're the one of the only Dutch stores on the island.

13:49 So, we have uh about 50 different

13:51 Dutch Gura cheeses straight from the Netherlands.

13:53 Uh we let people sample some cheeses as well.

13:56 So, uh if uh if this on your bucket list

13:58 to buy a wheel of cheese, now is your chance.

14:00 A wheel of cheese.

14:01 You know, this is it's amazing.

14:02 You walk in here, you have the tulips,

14:04 you have the cheese, of course, you have some liquors.

14:07 So, in terms of cheeses, what are we trying?

14:09 There's a lot of Howa.

14:10 Yes.

14:10 Most of the cheese that we carry are ka cheeses.

14:13 Um, Dutch kha cheeses.

14:15 So, that's the protected name.

14:17 Um, so which means you follow a certain

14:18 recipe and it's made in the Netherlands as well.

14:21 So, what we have here is an original ka from the Netherlands.

14:24 This one is called the old Amsterdam cheese.

14:26 Old Mam cheese has been winning awards on different food

14:29 and cheese competitions around the world for the last 25 years.

14:33 It's so amazing.

14:34 It was nutty, creamy, and a little sweet.

14:37 Super delicious.

14:38 So, you were telling me how the name is not protected.

14:41 Dutch Howa.

14:42 Dutch Gouda is protected.

14:44 It was all traded in the town of Guda, little north of Roderdam.

14:47 Yes, correct.

14:48 [music] So, that's where they originally traded the cheese.

14:50 That's where the name comes from.

14:52 But now, you can make Dutch Guda cheese anywhere in the Netherlands.

14:55 But you can make Guda cheese anywhere around the world.

14:57 So Gouda is not the protected way.

14:59 So as you walk through the store,

15:00 you're going to find a lot of souvenirs from Holland.

15:02 Amazing stuff.

15:03 Some tulips.

15:03 But then look this mountain of cheese over here.

15:06 But I got to show you this.

15:08 Hey, this one's it's ridiculous.

15:10 So big black dick.

15:12 I think his name is Dick.

15:13 And actually it's white chocolate.

15:15 Makes no sense.

15:16 Which one is this one?

15:17 Young cheese.

15:18 Young cheese.

15:19 Just regular young cheese.

15:21 M.

15:21 Oh yeah.

15:22 The other one, the New Amsterdam one.

15:24 That one's way more pungent.

15:27 Absolutely four weeks.

15:29 Only four weeks.

15:29 Very young.

15:30 Oh, it's so nice and creamy.

15:34 Yes.

15:33 Oh my god.

15:33 Buttery.

15:36 God.

15:36 You Dutch love your cheese.

15:40 More.

15:39 What are you doing to me?

15:41 This is the green pesto.

15:43 The green pesto cheese.

15:46 Yeah.

15:48 Oh, it's good.

15:49 Nice and herbal.

15:50 Basil and garlic.

15:51 Basil and garlic.

15:51 Really good for your pastas.

15:53 So, let me ask you.

15:54 We have cheeses and then we have some liquors.

15:56 Is that how you do it?

15:57 This is the guava berry rum.

15:58 Guava berry rum.

15:59 So, it basically comes from this thing.

16:02 Yes.

16:01 Right here.

16:02 This is guava berry.

16:02 It's all just sitting inside with some rum.

16:05 Let's try it.

16:10 Ooh, I love it.

16:13 It's like a flavorful rocky.

16:17 Is it smoked?

16:19 Yes.

16:19 This one over here that sausage.

16:23 M.

16:23 Oh, it's amazing.

16:25 Very smoky, creamy.

16:26 You know, it gives me the taste of Holland in my mouth.

16:31 As you can see, they have infinite cheese.

16:33 You have cumin, [clears throat] coconut, organic red chili.

16:37 God, this is insane.

16:39 Chili Gouda.

16:41 Basically, just buy one of these blocks and pretend you went to Holland.

16:45 Basically, you're in Holland.

16:46 So, so that's our brand that we made.

16:48 Oh, this is your brand?

16:50 Yes.

16:50 Wow.

16:50 So, how many different cheeses do you make here?

16:52 We make none here on the island.

16:53 Oh, none here?

16:54 No, it's all made in the Netherlands and imported here.

16:57 Since we're a Dutch island, that's the easiest thing to do for sure.

17:01 The Dutch have been making cheese since the 12th century.

17:03 So, they know exactly how to do it.

17:04 They have the cows, they good feeding,

17:07 uh they have the good treatment of the cows.

17:09 The cows are happy there in the Netherlands.

17:11 They come here, it's going to be too warm for them.

17:15 Yeah.

17:14 What makes, you know, this island so special?

17:17 I mean, so many different cultures.

17:20 Actually, you already said it.

17:21 That makes it very unique and special.

17:22 We have over 200 different nationalities.

17:25 We have amazing weather most of the time as well.

17:28 Um, everybody respects each other and uh we're

17:31 just we're called a friendly island, that's why.

17:33 So, what's the difference between the north and the south for you?

17:36 Uh, the French Hey, can you put that in there?

17:38 No.

17:39 [laughter] No.

17:40 Um the French is more European while we

17:43 are more um like a melting pots Caribbean.

17:47 Um yes.

17:50 Yes.

17:50 So even the Dutch side is not really that Dutch.

17:53 If you go to let's say our sister island Kurasau

17:56 that will be a lot more Dutch than we are.

17:58 We're more a little bit more Americanized but still Caribbean.

18:01 Caribbean as well.

18:03 So what does family mean here in St.

18:05 Martin?

18:05 your neighbors or not only blood can be family but also good friends.

18:10 What's what's nice about Simo too is if you want to hang out with your friends,

18:14 you just call them up and say,

18:14 "Are you ready in a half an hour?" "Okay, let's meet there." And it's easy.

18:18 I've lived in Europe for 11 years.

18:19 If you want to meet up with a friend, um how about uh next month?

18:24 How does how does that go?

18:25 So, it's it's it's more spontaneous here, more outgoing.

18:29 The good thing is that the the island is very very small.

18:32 So, you literally can be on the other side in half an hour.

18:34 It's not Oh, yeah.

18:36 20 minutes even.

18:37 Uh, yes.

18:38 So, nice and small.

18:39 And it feels like you're in a totally different country as well.

18:42 They're, like I said, they're really European, more European, really French.

18:47 Uh, whereas we are not.

18:48 This is a sheep's cheese from the Netherlands.

18:50 From Henry Villa.

18:51 Young sheep's cheese from Henry V.

18:54 Wow.

18:55 Can't wait.

19:01 Yeah, it's nice.

19:01 That's really nice.

19:02 Has like a very pungent taste, I feel like.

19:04 But it's it's very young.

19:05 Yeah.

19:05 It it almost feels like a more pungent goat cheese in a way.

19:10 Like a little bit like just sort of that gy

19:12 taste compared to like you know the cow's milk.

19:14 So if I want to take this home, what do I have to do?

19:15 So you're allowed to travel with cheese.

19:17 You can bring 20 lbs per person through US and Canadian customs.

19:20 All you have to do is keep it sealed.

19:22 Dutch cheeses are typically semi hard to hard,

19:24 which means it can last uh some even up to 6 weeks in air conditioning.

19:28 So they all travel just fine.

19:29 Just keep it sealed.

19:30 That's the hardest part of traveling with cheese.

19:32 Keep it sealed, guys.

19:32 Don't Don't eat it before you get on the plane.

19:34 Cheese and liquor, but obviously most of the stuff is from the US,

19:38 except this one, guava berry liquor.

19:40 This is the one that's made right here in St.

19:41 Martin.

19:42 It's amazing seeing people just buy these massive

19:45 blocks of cheese to take it home.

19:48 Incredible.

19:48 I mean, I highly suggest trying all the cheese.

19:51 Maybe take one of these home with you.

19:53 Look at this.

19:54 What a block.

19:55 Oh my god, it weighs so much.

19:56 I got you a gift, bro.

19:58 Thank you so much.

19:59 Some clogs.

20:00 It's a little small for my huge feet though.

20:02 A freshly baked almond cookies.

20:04 Is this a St.

20:05 Martin thing or It's a Dutch cookie.

20:07 It's a Dutch cookie.

20:08 Would you like a try?

20:10 Freshly baked almond cookie.

20:11 Looks like a nice buttery crust.

20:13 Smells amazing.

20:14 All right, here we go.

20:15 Dutch cookie.

20:19 Oh, the filling is perfect.

20:20 I mean, super nice crust outside, inside super soft,

20:23 plus the nuttiness of the almond on top.

20:25 I mean, this beats the the almond croissant.

20:29 Oh, hey.

20:30 Thank you so much.

20:31 What an experience.

20:32 Thank you.

20:32 Amazing.

20:34 Guys, say cheese.

20:36 We love Dominica.

20:37 I love it, too.

20:38 Yes, we love St.

20:39 Martin.

20:40 So, what's the big difference between St.

20:41 Martin and Dominica?

20:42 Uh, the cultural difference and the development in terms of St.

20:46 Martin versus Dominica.

20:47 St.

20:47 Martin is a little bit more advanced than Dominica.

20:51 Yeah.

20:50 Yes.

20:50 With the tourism sector and all of that.

20:52 How about the food?

20:53 The food is all about the same because you

20:55 have a lot of different nationalities here as well.

20:57 Dominica, Jamaica, throughout the Caribbean islands here in Samar.

21:00 So, it's the best.

21:01 So, what's your favorite thing about this island?

21:03 Um, I like the culture, the party.

21:06 It's a party island.

21:06 You party every day, Monday to Monday.

21:08 So, where do you go to find peace on this island?

21:11 Um, on the beach.

21:12 You go on the beach, enjoy yourself, relax, and have a good time.

21:16 It's very nice.

21:16 Yes.

21:17 Amazing.

21:17 So, what's something outsiders should know about St.

21:19 Martin?

21:20 Okay.

21:20 The the most exciting thing about St.

21:22 Martin is that a lot of people come here

21:24 for the planes to see the plane fly right over your head.

21:26 also the food, the quezing,

21:28 the different culture and so forth to enjoy that as well.

21:30 You also have the nude beaches and so forth.

21:32 You all of that in St.

21:34 Martin.

21:34 So, what's the best way to get around St.

21:36 Martin?

21:37 Okay, the best way to get around um St.

21:38 Martin is basically on the taxi.

21:40 The taxi could explain you the different areas,

21:42 how to get from point A to point B and so forth.

21:45 Also, we have a little traffic situation.

21:47 So, I would advise like if you don't know how to get around Simon,

21:50 the best way is to get a taxi.

21:51 So, can people hire you for the day?

21:52 Yeah, definitely you can do that as well.

21:54 Yes.

21:55 Okay.

21:55 Hey, so I'm here with Brenda.

21:56 Brenda is a local in St.

21:58 Martin, and Brenda is the one who's been helping me figure this country out,

22:01 this this amazing island.

22:03 So, Brenda, tell me about St.

22:05 Martin.

22:05 What why is St.

22:06 Martin so special?

22:08 Well, first of all, thank you for for coming to St.

22:10 Martin.

22:11 Um St.

22:11 Martin is special because we're we're a country, you know, half Dutch,

22:15 half French, which is very unique uh in and of itself.

22:19 And um you know, we call ourselves the culinary capital of the Caribbean.

22:24 And that is uh I would I would dare say that's

22:27 probably one of the most unique aspects of of our our island,

22:31 the food, the the the culture.

22:33 Um we've got Carnival coming up in just a couple in just a couple weeks.

22:37 It's one of the biggest events here in in St.

22:40 Martin.

22:41 Um but we we consider ourselves metropolis.

22:45 Um but we're only 37 square miles,

22:48 which is really, you know, we we think we're huge.

22:50 We're like little lap dogs.

22:52 you know, they think that they're really huge.

22:54 They got a big bark, but they're this big.

22:56 But, uh, no, St.

22:58 Martin is is very special.

22:59 I'm uh I'm um born and raised St.

23:02 Martiner.

23:03 I hold it deep and and close to my heart.

23:06 Um, while I was educated abroad, um, in Canada,

23:10 I immediately after finishing my education came back to St.

23:13 Martin

23:14 because it was it was I felt that there was a lot to offer

23:18 and this is where I'm from and who better to promote our island than us,

23:24 you know.

23:24 So I came back and I'm involved in hospitality and um I know

23:29 that um we've you know worked with you in the last couple days again.

23:33 Thank you for coming to St.

23:34 Martin because we feel that um it deserves that kind of attention for sure.

23:40 Thank you.

23:40 Yeah.

23:41 So how has St.

23:41 Martin changed?

23:43 So, you know, obviously St.

23:44 Martin has become very popular.

23:45 It's always been a very popular dis um um destination.

23:49 Um we've we've got now close to I think

23:51 it's 1.7 million passengers on cruise ships per year.

23:56 Um and that's, you know, snub your nose at that.

23:58 That's a lot of that's a lot of traffic, of course.

24:00 And the stayover passengers that are coming to St.

24:02 Martin are always, you know, coming back, you know.

24:06 Um so that's it.

24:07 It it speaks to the fact that when you come to St.

24:10 Martin, there's something that St.

24:11 Martin does to you [snorts] and um people come back and it's it's

24:17 that has its benefits and it's of course it also has its downsides in that um we

24:23 now you know suffer a little bit with congestion

24:27 uh but all in all people love the island and there is something

24:31 about it you know and just as you arrived just now I said

24:34 to you and what did you think and you were like I love

24:37 it and that's there's a magnetism there's

24:40 something that attracts people to this island.

24:44 Um, that when they come here,

24:46 they they love it and they want to come back and they feel at home.

24:50 You know, we're a melting pot.

24:51 I I think we're upwards of 30

24:53 or or 40 different cultures and nationalities on St.

24:58 Martin.

25:00 Wow.

24:59 That is that is unbelievable.

25:01 This has become home for many people.

25:04 So, what does family mean to you?

25:06 Family is everything.

25:07 Family is everything.

25:08 If you don't if you don't have that unit, you're in trouble.

25:12 And that's not just because we're here on an island, it's anywhere.

25:17 Family is everything.

25:17 Shout out to Kevin.

25:18 Snacks eating snacks.

25:20 All right.

25:20 So, if you're in St.

25:21 Martin and you're looking for the best burger on the island,

25:23 you have to come here to Crave.

25:25 And across from Crave, we have the smallest bar in the world,

25:28 which is called Juggy's Place.

25:29 We're going to have a amazing burger and then

25:30 we're going to get a slushie over there.

25:32 So, we got the Crave special special sauce,

25:34 lettuce, tomato, grilled onions, American cheese, and a double.

25:37 The smash burger.

25:37 This one has bacon on top.

25:39 Yeah.

25:39 And I try to keep it simple.

25:42 Mhm.

25:42 Uh cuz I don't think burger is meant to be fancy.

25:44 No, it's not supposed to be fancy.

25:46 It's supposed to be delicious.

25:47 Yeah.

25:47 It doesn't have to be fancy, but good.

25:48 Yeah.

25:48 It almost looks like you have the fkaca bread, right?

25:51 You got some delicious fries right there.

25:53 They cut nice and crispy with some some salt.

25:57 Wow.

25:57 Yeah, it is like an Italian style fkaca.

25:59 Almost exactly the same.

26:01 I personally like this type of bread better.

26:02 It's like a panini burger.

26:04 Yeah.

26:04 It's more thin, you know, thin and crispy.

26:07 Mhm.

26:07 Little fluffy in the middle.

26:09 Yeah.

26:09 Uh the truth is it was it was born out of laziness.

26:11 Born out of laziness.

26:12 Yeah.

26:12 Cuz instead of rolling like, you know,

26:14 uh dozens of like burger bread, burger buns.

26:18 I just baked it off in a tray,

26:19 cut it off into squares, and that's kind of become my signature now.

26:22 It's great.

26:22 I love it.

26:23 Just going to heat it up on the flat top.

26:25 Nice.

26:26 Look at that.

26:27 Got some nice fries.

26:28 Oo, it pops so quick.

26:30 Nice.

26:30 Look at that fkatcha.

26:31 Nice little charred crispiness.

26:33 I want to have u local food.

26:36 That's why you do burgers cuz so many Americans.

26:38 Yeah.

26:38 Yeah.

26:38 That and also like you know I cook food I like.

26:40 So I spent like years trying to like you know uh trial and error

26:45 and like you know going through like different

26:46 burger variations and recipes and stuff like that.

26:50 Yeah.

26:49 And I kind of landed on this like smash burger homemade bread.

26:53 Yeah.

26:53 And I was just trying to make a burger

26:54 that you know wasn't available on the island.

26:56 Yeah.

26:56 Are you more of a smash burger guy or a thick burger guy?

26:59 Uh depends on the mood.

27:00 Yeah.

27:00 Depends on the mood.

27:02 Yeah.

27:01 What about you?

27:02 So, I'm personally more smash burger every single day.

27:05 Put some seasoning on top or some salt.

27:08 Salt.

27:09 Yep.

27:09 And then thinly sliced onion.

27:11 That's where most of the flavor comes from.

27:13 And also keeps the burgers nice and moist.

27:16 Nice and juicy.

27:18 That's how you make a smash burger.

27:20 Wow.

27:20 That's beautiful, bro.

27:21 Yeah.

27:21 We heard really good things about your burger, by the way.

27:24 And some of them are like burning.

27:26 Okay.

27:26 So, you have like a different variation of flavors.

27:28 So, you have a little bit like a complexity from those onions.

27:31 Yeah.

27:31 Yeah.

27:31 I got the ones on the bottom are getting cooked.

27:32 The ones on the top are getting like steamed.

27:35 Yeah.

27:35 So nice to have all the onion flavor permanent through the burger.

27:39 Mhm.

27:40 But all that flavor that smells so good.

27:43 You want some cheese on it?

27:43 Yeah.

27:44 We're doing cheese, of course.

27:45 Right.

27:45 All American cheese.

27:46 Yeah.

27:47 Melts the best.

27:48 You know, it has a good like mouth feel as well.

27:51 When you bite into a burger,

27:52 it has like that kind of creaminess that you don't get from other cheeses.

27:56 Look at that.

27:58 And so what's that sauce like?

27:59 So, that was just a mix of ketchup, mayonnaise, and mustard.

28:02 A little bit of sweetness, a little bit of tang from the mustard,

28:04 you know, kind of helps bring a little bit of uh Mhm.

28:08 balance.

28:08 Look at that.

28:09 Wow.

28:09 This looks such a juicy burger.

28:11 I cannot wait to try this.

28:12 All right, so next up, we got the fries.

28:16 There he is.

28:16 Two doubles up.

28:17 Here we go.

28:18 Perfect.

28:18 Thank you so much.

28:20 Here we go, guys.

28:21 The amazing Crave burger.

28:23 Got a double smashed burger.

28:25 Look at this burger.

28:26 Love the fkaca bread on top.

28:28 We have the incredible cheese.

28:31 American cheese.

28:31 And here we go.

28:32 The first bite.

28:33 Oh, I can't wait.

28:38 No, it is bread.

28:40 So easy to bite into.

28:41 Oh, I love the burger.

28:42 It's like crispy.

28:43 Carameliz has onions inside.

28:45 Oh, I also love the sauce.

28:47 I mean, this is my type of burger.

28:49 It's like if a Italian and American had a a fusion mix in the Caribbean.

28:57 M.

28:59 Oh my god, so much flavor in here.

29:00 No McDonald's eo bites for me on this one.

29:11 There's something so comforting about eating a burger.

29:14 If you're American, you know what this is about.

29:16 Burgers is comfort food.

29:18 Getting off the cruise ship, walk over to Crave, have yourself a smash burger.

29:21 It is phenomenal.

29:27 Delicious, bro.

29:28 Get some of that ketchup.

29:29 These steak up fries.

29:31 Nice and salty.

29:35 You know they're good when the shape is like deformed and different.

29:39 What we got?

29:40 That junkies hot sauce.

29:41 So, this is his dad's hot sauce.

29:46 Wo, it's hot.

29:49 It's good.

29:50 It's actually amazing.

29:51 I'm going to put it on my burger.

29:52 Well, I've never had a burger like this with the fkaca bread.

29:54 Yeah, I don't think I have either.

29:55 I like this unique blend.

29:57 He made it out of laziness and now he just like it's it's a taste.

30:00 It's his burger.

30:04 Oh god.

30:05 So Crave is down this like small alleyway right next to Front Street.

30:10 Soon as you walk in here, it's like a mini plaza.

30:12 You have like four little I guess like restaurants.

30:15 You have Crave, you have his smallest ball in the world.

30:18 And then you have a souvenir shop.

30:19 You guys let me know smash burger or regular burger.

30:23 So bake this fresh every morning.

30:25 That's why it's so good.

30:26 Bread.
