my favorite tv shows 📺 (according to a film major)

0:14 forever and now just occasionally critiques tv shows and movies

0:28 the bat obviously i recommend watching breaking bad game of thrones

0:32 except for the last season which was absolute trash and black

0:35 beer but you guys have probably been bashed over the head

0:37 with those recommendations for the past like three years so i'm gonna

0:40 try to focus on some shows that you guys might not

0:42 have heard of or that i think are a little bit

0:44 under hyped and also i legitimately will take any excuse possible

0:47 to just geek out about tv shows and movies so my first

0:50 recommendation is fleabag fleabag is a dark comedy about a directionless

0:54 20-something living in london who is coping with the recent death

0:58 of her best friend her best friend boo was trying

1:00 to earn sympathy from her cheating ex-boyfriend by throwing herself in front

1:04 of a bus and injuring herself just enough to get

1:06 into the hospital but she accidentally like threw herself in front of too

1:11 big of a bus and so then she died if that isn't

1:14 a fun premise for a sitcom i don't know what is

1:16 so it's kind of like a sitcom but also this mystery

1:20 of what happened to fleabag what really happened with her friend's

1:23 death obviously the show has a pretty dark sense of humor

1:26 and it has some pretty dark themes about like coping with grief

1:29 and loss and self-hatred but it is also overwhelmingly so funny

1:34 it's one of those shows that will make you laugh out loud

1:36 and will also make you cry and that is my favorite

1:38 type of show throughout the series the main character breaks the fourth

1:41 wall so that's when a character in a movie or tv

1:44 show directly addresses the camera or the audience and i'll be

1:47 sure to treat you like a nasty little um that was

1:52 a joke yeah i know okay i was like okay this show

1:56 is created by anne starr's phoebe waller bridge and i would

2:00 literally and i don't use the word literally often kill a small

2:04 child for sheepy waller bridge phoebe waller ridge is who i

2:08 want to be when i grow up she is so funny

2:10 she is an impeccable writer but unlike a lot of directors

2:13 who try to act in their own writing in tarantino cb

2:16 wallabridge is actually an incredibly good actress as well what i

2:19 love about this show other than the excellent british humor is

2:23 that it is written by and about women and it feels

2:26 like the female characters are real as i grow up i realize

2:30 more and more that i spent pretty much my entire life

2:32 watching female characters that were written by men and they always fall

2:37 into like the uncanny valley of what a woman actually is

2:40 like they're either too much of a sex object they're too

2:42 ditzy they're too catty or now there's like this new hashtag

2:47 girlboss woman who always has like the right punch line and she's

2:50 super strong but in like a masculine way and she doesn't

2:53 actually have any flaws and that's supposed to be female empowerment

2:57 when in reality those characters are too perfect to actually feel

3:01 real either so what i love about fleabag is that all

3:03 of the female characters are deeply flawed and deeply up

3:07 but they're also smart and they're funny they're sexual but they're not

3:11 kind of a sex object in the eye of the camera

3:14 they just like feel real and i appreciate that so much please

3:18 raise your hands if you would trade five years of your life

3:29 for the so-called perfect if after watching fleabag you are craving

3:44 some more phoebe waller bridge written material which i promise you

3:47 you will be i would also recommend the tv show she made

3:50 before fleabag which is called crashing it follows six 20-somethings

3:54 that are living in an abandoned hospital in order to get cheaper

3:57 rent one character moved there to try to get together

4:00 with her longtime best friend who actually has a girlfriend one of them

4:03 is trying to figure out their sexuality so it's a very

4:06 like classic 20 something rom-com vibe it's a lot more lighthearted

4:10 than fleabag and a little bit less of a developed show

4:14 character-wise but it was still a really fun watch next up we

4:17 have fargo a criminally underrated show but um because it's

4:22 a crime show i'm sorry god i would be such a good

4:27 dad fargo is a black comedy slash crime show that follows

4:30 everyday minnesotan folk who get wrapped up in the world of crime

4:34 murder and drug dealing dun dun duh the first season follows

4:38 this mild-mannered minnesotan insurance salesman

4:41 named lester who is constantly belittled

4:44 by his more successful older brother his high school bully who lives

4:47 in the same town and kind of emotionally abused by his wife

4:51 one day after lester gets beat up he by chance encounters

4:54 this mysterious hitman named marvo in the waiting room of the hospital

4:59 and malvo gives him his number that night lester snaps

5:02 and murders his wife and ends up calling this mysterious hitman

5:06 in order to help him clean up what follows is kind

5:08 of a slow burning and awkward version of breaking bad where

5:13 lester this once innocent guy gets dragged deeper into this criminal

5:17 world and he tries to hide from the police if you've seen

5:20 the movie fargo by the coen brothers and are now

5:22 forever scarred by woodchoppers the tv show fargo is set kind

5:26 of in the same mid-western world it's in the same tone about

5:30 people who don't know what the they're doing accidentally getting into crime

5:34 but it doesn't actually retell any of the story of fargo

5:37 it's just kind of like inspired by that world which i

5:40 like a lot because i think that if a movie has

5:43 done something really well why would you make it into a tv

5:47 show and make it worse fargo is an anthology series so

5:50 every single season has a new plotline a new time period

5:53 a new cast a completely new story i really like that because

5:57 each season kind of feels like a movie in and of itself

6:00 it all wraps up very neatly you don't get any game

6:03 of thrones happening where they kind of like up the ending

6:05 and then ruined the whole series for you retrospectively if you

6:08 like tarantino movies breaking bad the godfather if you want something

6:12 that keeps you at the edge of your seat if you

6:14 want a little bit of an adventure i would definitely recommend fargo

6:17 my next recommendation is love on netflix i would describe love

6:21 as kind of an anti-rom-com it basically takes all of your expectations

6:25 of rom-com and flips them on its head and takes

6:28 a much more realistic look at dating and i think it is

6:31 a great show to watch if like me you grew up

6:34 on all of these like cheesy 2000s rom-coms that set honestly

6:38 incredibly unrealistic expectations for what a relationship should look like

6:42 the story takes place in silver lake in los angeles and it

6:45 follows two people mickey who's a radio producer and gus who

6:49 is an on-set tutor for child actors who both go through rough

6:53 breakups and then serendipitously meet however we are left to question

6:57 throughout the series as their relationship goes through trials and tribulations

7:00 and ups and downs whether the relationship is actually good for them

7:04 mickey is kind of the shell of a manic pixie dream

7:07 girl from the outset she seems very cool she seems

7:10 adventurous she seems like she doesn't really give a she's kind

7:13 of a badass but she also struggles with alcohol addiction and sex

7:17 and love addiction so at the beginning of the series she actually

7:21 starts going to sex and love addict meetings but then gets

7:25 into this relationship and gus is kind of the shell of the like

7:29 nerdy writer boy that literally all male writers write themselves

7:33 into in rom-coms who somehow miraculously get a girl who's a 10.

7:38 basically he seems like the endearing nerdy writer

7:41 boy who needs an adventurous girl to show

7:44 him all he has to live for when in reality this guy is actually kind

7:48 of an and he's actually not nearly as good

7:51 a writer as he actually thinks so throughout

7:53 the series we're like should we actually root

7:54 for their relationship are they good together or are they

7:57 just two desperate and lonely people clinging

7:59 on to each other because they need validation and deluding

8:02 themselves into thinking that this relationship is working

8:04 i feel like i both relate to mickey

8:07 and gus in different ways i've been in relationships

8:09 where a guy has like projected manny pixic

8:11 dream girl syndrome onto me and has seen

8:14 me as this exotic fun quirky girl who would

8:17 like fix his life but i also feel like i have been the angsty writer who

8:21 wanted somebody who was like way hotter and way

8:24 cooler without actually carrying what they were feeling

8:26 like on the inside and i have also

8:28 definitely leaned on relationships or dating as a form

8:31 of validation and a way to kind of like distract myself from my own problems so

8:36 this show is really calling me out but i like it a lot and now a brief

8:42 intermission for a speed round of my favorite

8:44 sitcoms because if i talked about all of them

8:46 extensively this video would literally be like an hour

8:49 long so first up as you can probably tell by my bangs i grew up watching

8:53 new girl all of the characters are super lovable

8:55 in their own way and it literally just

8:57 feels like hanging out with your friends if

8:58 the office is a little bit too cringy

9:01 for you and you get really bad secondhand embarrassment

9:03 i think parks and rec is a great

9:05 alternative also just a really optimistic funny show

9:08 30 rock another fantastic sitcom it's written

9:10 by and stars tina fey and i would literally eat

9:14 a small child for tina fey the unbreakable

9:16 kimmy schmidt is also so funny and very out there also written by tina fey also

9:21 impeccable because that woman can do no wrong sex

9:23 in the city is so cheesy but still so much fun definitely has a lot of like

9:29 90s feminism that isn't completely up to date

9:32 and by that i mean it's very much not up

9:34 to date but it's still such a fun show to watch don't trust the bee in apartment

9:38 23 is great to watch if you have

9:40 nostalgia for like early 2000's energy rom-coms jane

9:44 by design was my favorite show growing up

9:46 it literally inspired me to get into fashion

9:49 and lastly i know house isn't a sitcom it's

9:51 a medical drama but i wanted to include it

9:53 because i literally watched every single episode

9:55 of this show um first of all because it's a very good show but second of all

9:59 because in high school i had the biggest crush

10:02 on this australian boy in my class and there's

10:05 an australian character in house so i would

10:07 literally come home and watch this tv show every

10:10 single day just so that i could fantasize about

10:12 this australian boy in my class and that ends my speed round now on to me

10:17 taking much longer to explain the plot line of shows i would be remiss if i did

10:21 not put bojack horseman on my list bojack

10:24 horseman is an animated show that takes place

10:26 in this kind of absurdist version of hollywood where

10:30 half the characters are humans and half of them

10:33 are animated animals which is never really explained

10:37 as a choice but you kind of just learn to run with it but basically the main

10:41 storyline follows bojack who is this burnt out

10:45 has been 90s sitcom actor he used to be really famous back in the day but he

10:50 feels like his life has already peaked and now

10:52 he lives alone in a hollywood mansion he

10:55 is struggling with alcoholism depression he has a bunch

10:58 of meaningless hookups and he's trying to find

11:01 purpose in his life again the series starts

11:04 off with bojack finally deciding to hire a ghostwriter

11:06 to write his autobiography he meets the writer

11:08 her name is diane and finally for like

11:11 the first time in years he actually connects

11:13 with somebody but he finds out that diane is

11:16 dating his kind of nemesis in hollywood

11:18 this obnoxiously happy-go-lucky guy named welted dog his name

11:23 is mr peanut butter this show sounds so dumb when i explain it out loud but i

11:28 promise you it is like an actual cinematic

11:31 masterpiece it is so well written and again it's

11:34 one of those shows that makes me cry in one scene and laugh in the other despite

11:38 being literally about cartoon animals it is one

11:42 of the most touching and well written looks

11:45 at depression mental illness addiction and suicide that i've

11:49 ever seen shows and movies about hollywood can

11:52 tend to be a giant hollywood circle jerk

11:54 in la la land but bojack honestly tears hollywood

11:58 a new one it tears hollywood apart

12:00 for the money-making machine that doesn't really care about telling

12:03 interesting stories and more just cares about making

12:06 money and recycling old narratives that people find

12:09 really comfortable it talks about the news cycle

12:11 it talks about celebrity culture it talks about child

12:15 stardom and how up it is and it does all of that while genuinely managing to be

12:19 really funny like i think of any show

12:21 that i've watched bojack horseman packs in the most

12:24 jokes per minute even in set design they do such a great job like if you

12:28 pause bojack at any moment you'll be able

12:31 to read for example all of the storefronts

12:33 that the characters are walking past and every

12:35 single one will have like a little joke or a pun on it another thing i love

12:39 about bojack is at the onset it seems like it's

12:42 gonna be that classic story of like the male

12:44 anti-hero who is kind of a terrible person

12:48 he is kind of a dick to people but through the power of love and the woman

12:52 in his life he redeems himself and becomes

12:55 a good person and lives happily ever after

12:57 bojack really turns that expectation on its head

12:59 you do at times have sympathy for the main

13:01 character bojack but throughout the series you really

13:04 question is he a good person and to what

13:06 extent are his actions excusable to what extent

13:09 does he deserve to suffer the consequences without

13:12 spoiling too much this show does a great

13:14 job of giving the characters around a bojack

13:17 i have happy and full character arcs and they

13:19 have some great episodes focusing on the side

13:21 characters which are some of my favorite i sound like i'm going to cry but i

13:25 was just burping out uh lacroix bubbles next

13:28 up i thought i would talk about some stand-up

13:30 comedians since i'm sure you've seen like everywhere

13:32 on netflix there are a ton of stand-up specials

13:35 and they're one of my favorite things to watch

13:37 especially if i only have like an hour to kill so first up john mulaney his sets

13:42 are so well written he often incorporates dark

13:45 humor or dark that happened to him in his past but he presents it with this 50s

13:50 game show host persona that's super cheery so

13:53 it's like a really interesting contrast he always

13:55 relies on wit and good storytelling and never

13:58 falls on like gender or race stereotypes which is

14:02 um annoyingly rare to find in male comedians

14:04 nowadays every single one of his stand-up specials

14:08 on netflix are absolutely worth a watch and i

14:10 also love john mulaney and the sac lunch bunch

14:13 which is this like weird satirical musical special

14:17 kids show that he did which sounds bizarre

14:20 but i promise you it was actually a really fun time to watch and i am not even

14:24 a big kids person given the fact that i

14:26 would kill children for like most of these celebrities

14:29 that i don't even know also big mouth is so funny john mulaney accident and it's

14:33 written by his best friend nick crowell it

14:35 captures how awkward puberty is in the most

14:38 incredible way and i would give it a full

14:40 review but i've already been ending this video

14:41 for like three days and it's 30 minutes long so i'm gonna move along now next

14:46 up i love daniel sloss particularly his netflix

14:49 special jigsaw his sense of humor is super dark

14:52 and funny and he also has a scottish accent which makes all of his jokes like

14:55 at least 20 better basically in all

14:57 of his sets he'll do jokes for like 40 minutes

15:00 and then at the end there's this 20

15:02 minute kind of comedic ted talk where he will

15:06 talk about an actually kind of serious issue

15:08 that he cares about and that is my favorite

15:11 maybe just because i'm a nerd who likes ted talks his kind of rant at the end

15:15 of jigsaw literally like changed my perspective on relationships

15:19 basically what daniel slaw says is that there

15:22 are too many people in this world who

15:24 are just in relationships because they're too afraid

15:27 to be alone one of my favorite lines from the whole show was if you don't love

15:31 100 of me you don't love me you love a version of me that you made up

15:37 in my head and it's not my fault if i don't live up to it something i

15:42 think nearly everybody experiences in relationships is

15:45 that you kind of subtly oftentimes without realizing it

15:48 edit down yourself into a version of yourself

15:51 that you know the other person would like for me it was losing any feminist side

15:56 in myself i just stopped talking about feminism

15:59 or i stopped bringing up certain points because i

16:01 knew my boyfriend at the time wouldn't really relate

16:04 or engage with it at all i think

16:05 that's partially on me because i definitely have

16:07 the tendency to like calculate in my mind what

16:10 type of girl the guy would like and turn

16:12 into that but i'm trying to like shut that part off of my brain off and just

16:15 be like be yourself if the person doesn't

16:18 with you as yourself they're not for you move

16:21 along so please give jigsaw a watch um

16:23 if you're in a relationship or if you're single

16:25 i think it is like honestly that should

16:27 be some that they teach you in public school

16:29 because it is so valuable i read a tweet

16:32 that lacroix is just aggressive water and i

16:34 think that's so true it makes me like

16:36 burp it makes my stomach so uncomfortable but i

16:38 love this so much what's wrong with me next up i love catherine ryan if you

16:47 guys have seen that thing on tick tock that's like my mom said to me you know

16:50 sweetheart one day you should settle down and marry a rich man and i said mom i

16:55 am a rich man catherine ryan exudes that exact

16:58 energy she's a single mom in her 30s

17:01 and such a badass her stand-up sets so funny so raunchy but they also leave me

17:07 just feeling like good about myself i feel

17:09 like empowerment is such a buzzword but i do

17:11 feel like empowered i feel like i can

17:13 do anything after watching a katherine ryan stand

17:15 up set and then lastly bo burnham he

17:18 started out on youtube literally singing like silly songs

17:21 on his webcam and now his stand-up sets

17:24 are mostly musical comedy i still to this day

17:27 love his last stand-up set ever make happy

17:30 and particularly the finale of that basically he

17:33 like does this little auto-tuned song that's about

17:37 sacrificing your own happiness as an entertainer in order

17:42 to make other people happy which i find

17:47 deeply unrelatable have never felt any of those emotions

17:51 i would also recommend bo burnham was a guest

17:53 on pete holmes's podcast it is three hours

17:56 of some of the best conversation i've ever

17:58 heard i love that episode so much i've listened

18:00 to it multiple times and who the free

18:02 listens to a podcast episode i would also like

18:04 to be bona burnham's friend very bad i saw him once but i was in my car

18:08 and he was walking and i was literally like this close to jumping out of my car

18:12 to say hi to bo burnham but i didn't want to like kill anybody or seem

18:16 like an absolute psychopath when i'm in reality

18:18 kind of a medium level psychopath so i

18:21 didn't say hi to him but if you are watching this or any of bo burnham's friends

18:26 i would like to hang out with that man

18:28 thanks that's all of my stand-up recommendations

18:31 but my next tv show is years and years this is kind of a black mirror-esque tv

18:37 show in that it follows this extended family over a period of the next 15 years

18:42 and every episode skips a couple years in the future

18:45 and each year there are these new predictions

18:48 for what technology might turn into politics immigration

18:52 law and it paints this really like fascinating

18:55 picture of the future although also kind

18:57 of a depressing picture of the future if you miss

18:59 the earlier seasons of black mirror when it

19:01 wasn't absolute trash like it is now i would

19:04 really recommend watching this show i love like

19:07 just thinking about the future and what it might

19:09 hold but i also really like that this show

19:11 took those predictions about the future and let

19:14 us see them develop over years and years like you know how in black mirror it

19:17 just drops you off in some year in the future and it's like this is what society

19:21 is now but what i liked about years

19:23 and years is that it shows kind of realistically

19:26 how we could go from the society we

19:28 have now to this like absolutely batshit society

19:31 that they have by the end of the series it definitely kept me on the edge

19:34 of my seat and i think i watched the whole thing in one night because i just

19:37 wanted to see what was happening in the next

19:39 episode next on my list is the girlfriend experience

19:42 so this show is about christine a bright

19:44 but lonely college student who's kind of struggling

19:46 to pay her rent and her tuition and she

19:49 ends up getting drawn into the world of being

19:52 a sugar baby slash prostitute by her classmate

19:55 kind of hannah montana style for the rest

19:57 of the season she is trying to prevent her world as a law student and her world

20:02 as a prostitute from colliding and she's also

20:04 trying to uncover some potential corruption at the law

20:07 firm that she's interning at and i know

20:08 what you're thinking actually not another show glorifying

20:12 prostitution for the male gays the prostitute who

20:15 loves being a prostitute is like such a trope

20:18 created by men to just indulge in the fantasy

20:21 that women love like old crusty men

20:24 but this show really didn't feel derogatory towards women

20:28 at all it's co-written and half of the episodes

20:30 are directed by a woman so it genuinely

20:32 doesn't feel like it's satisfying some male fantasy

20:35 it feels like it's about a female character

20:38 and it's about female sexuality tonally the show is

20:41 a lot like gone girl it has a lot of that kind of like silent female anger

20:45 in it which i love i feel like the show is kind of the female version

20:49 of fight club where fight club is about being

20:52 stuck in this corporate environment and feeling this intense

20:55 desire to get out this like base masculinity

20:58 by literally beating each other up whereas in the girlfriend

21:00 experience it's this girl who's studious she's good

21:03 at her job she works in this very like sterile work environment but at the end

21:07 of the day like she really just wants to get off and that's kind of her version

21:11 of fight club having really like intense sex

21:14 with people so i really really love this show i think it is so underrated

21:18 and a big reason i wanted to fake

21:20 this video was literally to talk about this show because

21:22 nobody i know has watched it and i just want to geek out with other people

21:26 about this show my next recommendation is maniac

21:29 maniac takes place in this kind of like 80s

21:31 sci-fi vision of the future where two strangers

21:34 owen who is schizophrenic and suffers from hallucinations

21:38 and annie who is coping with the loss

21:40 of her sister decide to enroll in this experimental drug

21:43 trial that claims if it works it could cure them of all mental health problems

21:48 in the drug trial they take a series

21:50 of different pills that force them to have these like

21:52 vivid hallucinations dreams except for some reason annie

21:56 and owen's dreams keep combining so each episode consists

22:00 of a different vision that they have together

22:03 and it skips throughout all of these different genres

22:06 time periods settings characters there's one where they're

22:10 like magicians there's one where they are like in the 80s and they have to steal

22:14 a rare lemur i really like that episode this is

22:17 another one of those shows that feels like a movie it's just 10 episodes um it

22:21 was just a limited series it stars emma

22:23 stone and jonah hill what the how did they

22:26 get them in a tv show cinematography is

22:28 amazing the acting is amazing one of my favorite

22:30 things about the show is the world building i am such a nerd for these kind

22:34 of like future slash past worlds where it's

22:38 like a vision of the future that also feels

22:40 historical in some elements for example in the world

22:43 of maniac there are these things called ad

22:45 buddies that are literally like a physical human

22:48 who will sit next to you and read

22:50 you a bunch of ads and you can earn money that way so yeah overall if you

22:54 like eternal sunshine of the spotless mind inception

22:57 black mirror if you like kind of these crazy

22:59 like subconscious dream movies i would definitely recommend

23:03 maniac my next show is big little lies which

23:06 follows the story of five mothers in this wealthy

23:09 monterey neighborhood at the beginning of the series

23:11 we find out that somebody has been murdered and we see all of these like police

23:16 interviews with people in the neighborhood but we

23:18 don't know who was murdered and how so

23:20 the series is about discovering who was murdered

23:23 what was the motivation who did it and uncovering

23:26 the truth about the personal lives of all

23:28 of these seemingly rich and perfect mothers this is

23:32 another show that is a little bit depressing

23:34 which is apparently a theme in shows that i

23:36 like to watch i don't know what that says

23:38 about me it's definitely not the most exciting

23:41 show from the onset but if you stick it out and you start to like peel back

23:44 the layers of all of these characters

23:46 and see what lies underneath it becomes a really

23:49 really fascinating series this is a little bit

23:51 of a spoiler but basically throughout the series you

23:54 find out that nicole kidman's character is being

23:57 abused by her husband and it is so heartbreaking

24:01 to see her sessions with a therapist and how

24:05 she starts off completely in denial that any

24:08 abuse is happening or that anything is wrong

24:10 with her relationship and this therapist slowly like breaks

24:13 down her walls and makes her realize like

24:16 what's actually going on in our relationship i also

24:18 think it's a great series to watch when

24:20 you're a little bit older and i definitely want

24:22 to rewatch this series if i ever become a mom because it really focuses on a lot

24:26 of the nuances of like womanhood and relationships

24:29 and i think that as you get older you can appreciate and relate to that a lot

24:33 more sidenote but i don't know if you guys relate like when i was younger

24:37 my favorite type of movies were all these like

24:40 kind of heady action adventure movies but as i

24:43 have grown up i more and more really like realistic tv shows and movies and i

24:48 just love seeing my own emotions reflected and i

24:52 love seeing just like drama about real people

24:54 i think when i was younger life seemed

24:56 a lot more simple so i was like why would i watch a movie about like marriage

25:01 or real life like it's not that complicated

25:03 but as i get older i realize that like this is so complicated and it's kind

25:07 of it's like own puzzle to figure out anyways

25:09 that's why i love big little lies also

25:12 the acting in this series like literally they have

25:14 an all-star cast i'm giving it two italian

25:17 hands that's how good it is i also really

25:20 recommend this to all of my guy friends

25:22 or any guys watching this a lot of the times

25:24 guys think that if a show stars all woman or is about womanhood then it's not

25:28 for them and i guarantee you this will

25:29 be an interesting watch for you and i think

25:32 it'll also give you a really interesting insight

25:34 into some of the struggles that women go

25:36 through through motherhood and like being a wife

25:39 and stuff like that and i think that's important

25:40 for men to watch as well next up

25:42 for something a little bit lighter i love friends

25:44 from college friends from college is a comedy
