New Star Fox Game Announced With Gameplay, What Do You Think?
IGN
0:00 Oh, hey.
0:00 It's Brian from IGN.
0:01 And Nintendo Just Surprise dropped a brand new trailer for a Nintendo
0:05 Switch 2 game we had no idea was coming called Star Fox.
0:08 Based on the classic N64 game Star Fox 64,
0:11 but now with completely overhauled visuals.
0:13 Let's take a look at the trailer and then barrel roll to the other
0:15 side of the video so we can unpack it all and talk about it.
0:18 Check it out.
0:46 Atmospheric entry complete.
0:47 Extend the wings.
1:02 G diffuser systems check.
1:04 Sound off.
1:04 Team slippy here.
1:07 So far so good.
1:10 This is Pepe.
1:11 All systems go.
1:13 Falco here.
1:14 G diff diffuser seems fine.
1:16 Let's go already.
1:18 Enemy targets up ahead.
1:20 Let's rock and roll.
1:29 What you're seeing is footage of the game in action.
1:32 While stage layouts have been kept the same,
1:34 the visuals have received a major upgrade.
1:39 Slippy, stay in formation.
1:41 Banter between characters is also back.
1:44 Now you've done it, Slippy.
1:45 Bogey on your tail.
1:48 Cover me while I fine-tune my sensors.
1:52 Oh, you got him.
1:53 Thanks, Fox.
1:55 We need your help, Star Fox.
1:58 Hey there, General.
1:59 You seem a little on edge, but as it happens, my team's
2:03 This is Fox Mloud, leader of the Star Fox mercenary squad.
2:07 Prep the Rwings.
2:08 We've got a job to do, Star Fox.
2:10 We're going to take the system back from Andros, one planet at a time.
2:15 Falco Lombardi is their ace pilot and Fox's rival.
2:19 Sounds perfect.
2:20 There's no way Andros would expect us to launch an assault there.
2:24 You up for another challenge, Fox?
2:28 Scans are showing unidentified energy emanating
2:31 from within is the team's engineer extraordinaire.
2:37 Incredible.
2:37 Do you realize how rare it is to experience a stable warp channel?
2:41 Did you see the distortions?
2:43 That base is the gateway to the wider system.
2:46 Fox and Peppy Hair is their strategic mastermind and veteran pilot.
2:50 Dance into enemy space.
2:52 Just this.
2:53 Hit them quick and hit them hard.
2:56 The fate of the Lilacat system rests squarely on their shoulders.
3:04 The Rwing is a high-performance aerospace fighter piloted by Fox and his crew.
3:11 It's equipped with a laser.
3:15 It can also fire charged shots or launch bombs that cover a wide area.
3:24 The Rwing can break, boost,
3:31 do a barrel roll to repel enemy fire, and even somersault.
3:41 Besides the Rwing, an agile ground assault
3:43 vehicle called the Landmaster and a modified
3:51 exploratory submersible called the Blue Marine can
3:54 also be piloted depending on the mission.
4:00 Impressive work, Star.
4:01 The campaign will take you to diverse planets as you seek
4:04 out the enemy's stronghold to restore peace in the Lilacat system.
4:10 Corneria is a planet teeming with life and the beating heart of the system.
4:19 Facina is a frozen planet with most of its surface covered in ice and snow.
4:24 Hit your own target, Fox.
4:28 Solar is the lilac systems scorching hot second star.
4:36 And Zoness is a deserted,
4:38 polluted ocean planet that was stripped of all its natural resources.
4:42 Pull your jets, cat.
4:46 There's also an asteroid field to navigate.
4:49 Persistent laser tech.
4:51 And the inside of a nebula.
4:54 From planet surfaces to outer space,
4:57 a variety of stages await with freeflying dog fights in all range mode.
5:06 Don't let anything through
5:09 that flash.
5:09 And massive boss battles.
5:11 You can look forward to intense aerial combat.
5:15 We did it.
5:16 All units, disengage.
5:21 Depending on the objectives you complete, the number of enemies shot down,
5:25 and other factors, the route you take through the system may change.
5:32 Replay stages with a different approach to find
5:34 ways through that are off the beaten path.
5:38 You'd better be right about this, Falco.
5:41 I say we trust Falco's instincts.
5:43 You worry about your own.
5:45 Plenty of new cutscenes have also been added.
5:48 These include never-before-seen mission briefings between stages,
5:52 allowing you to learn more about the characters and the Star Fox universe.
5:57 Fall in team, how are we doing?
6:00 You can choose between easy, normal, and expert difficulty settings.
6:05 When playing on easy difficulty,
6:07 your shield gauge will be longer and your lasers will remain powered up,
6:12 making it ideal for novice pilots.
6:17 In challenge mode, you can replay stages you've already cleared.
6:23 Complete a variety of objectives that bring new challenges
6:26 to each mission that you won't find in the campaign.
6:31 Defend the allied fleet.
6:32 Don't let any of them pass them.
6:38 Break through.
6:39 We'll find out who's coordinating this attack.
6:43 Take on these challenges on either normal or expert difficulty.
6:50 Battle mode puts you in four versus four dog fights.
6:54 Players are split between team Star Fox and Team Star Wolf,
6:58 then compete to earn the most points by clearing missions and taking down foes.
7:04 You can select from three stages, each with its own rule set.
7:12 Take out opponents and seize control
7:14 of the zone around the satellite towers on Corneria.
7:22 Star Fox completed the objective.
7:27 Collect as many energy crystals as you can while dodging meteorites on Facina.
7:38 Or retrieve cargo from space pirates and take it to your base in sector Y.
7:46 Star Fox completed the objective.
7:49 You can create private matches with your friends online
7:53 or match up with random players from around the world,
7:56 making for a variety of ways to join team battles.
8:00 Plus, if one person has the game,
8:03 up to four players can take to the skies locally
8:05 with Game Share or online using GameS Share via Game Chat.
8:18 By holding your Joy-Con 2 controller like a mouse,
8:21 you can seamlessly swap to mouse
8:23 controlled targeting for intuitive aiming and steering.
8:26 Flippy, stay in form.
8:30 Now you've done it, Slippy.
8:32 Bogey on your tail.
8:34 By sharing one of the Joy-Con 2 controllers with a second player,
8:38 you can split pilot and gunner duties in co-op.
8:42 We're entering Corderia City now.
8:46 Andra sure has trashed the place.
8:56 I'll target the lights on the left.
8:58 You guys go right.
9:02 It's a trap.
9:03 Take them down.
9:04 Don't crawl back under your body.
9:07 A swarm of lowly flies.
9:11 Get ready, team.
9:12 We're approaching Venom airspace.
9:23 What did you think?
9:24 As you just saw, Fox and Company have a more animallike design in this game.
9:33 Reborn exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
9:36 Star Fox launches June 25th.
9:40 So, what did you think?
9:41 That was a huge surprise that I absolutely was not expecting to see today.
9:44 But yeah, we're getting a brand new remake
9:45 of the classic 1997 rail shooter Star Fox 64,
9:49 not to be confused with the 2011 3DS remake of Star Fox 64.
9:52 So, uh, let's get into it.
9:54 For starters, the new visuals are fantastic.
9:57 Even if we know this is a remake and the stage layouts are largely the same,
10:01 the visuals are completely overhauled.
10:02 The graphics look amazing.
10:04 The character models are especially interesting because some of them almost
10:07 look like Nintendo is aiming for photo realism in some ways,
10:11 or at least as photorealistic as you could make a game
10:13 about talking animals who fly out of space to shoot each other.
10:16 Uh, Fox himself kind of looks like if you took Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr.
10:20 Fox and gave him like MCU armor, which I love.
10:23 Uh Nintendo described them as more animallike.
10:26 Not sure how to feel about that because real animals don't do any of this stuff,
10:30 but uh I think it means more fur textures, more hair, uh just more weird.
10:36 They they just look kind of feral and I I kind of appreciate that.
10:39 Uh the levels themselves though look so cool, as does the combat.
10:44 This is ultimately not a brand new Star Fox game.
10:46 It's a remake of Star Fox 64.
10:48 If you've never played that before,
10:49 uh it was basically very arcade-based, right?
10:52 You had to beat the game as fast as possible,
10:54 getting as high scores as pos as many high scores as possible.
10:56 Uh racking up points, taking branching paths, getting combos, all that stuff.
11:00 It is a game designed around going through the game multiple times.
11:04 You want multiple playthroughs to unlock things and do all the other fun stuff.
11:07 And so, I have a feeling Nintendo's going to hide a bunch of Easter eggs here,
11:11 new bells and whistles.
11:12 We've also got new cutscenes that will show off some of the story
11:16 beats behind these characters that we never got to see before.
11:19 I think the coolest thing here though,
11:20 the biggest surprise is that there are these brand new Star Star Fox
11:24 avatars that track your face animations if you have a USB camera plugged in.
11:28 Uh, and you can use them across
11:30 other online features and they just look horrifying.
11:33 Uh, I love it.
11:34 Uh, either way, this game is out June 25th for Nintendo Switch 2.
11:38 It also supports the recently released or re-released
11:42 N64 controller that works on Switch and Switch 2.
11:44 So, uh, if you got one of those, you're ready to go with some classic
11:47 N64 gameplay on a game that does not look like an N64 game at all.
11:52 I'm excited for it.
11:53 It'll be here very soon.
11:54 So, what do you think of this surprise Star Fox announcement?
11:57 Press Z or R twice in the comments and let me know.
12:00 Press other keys, too, so you actually type a sentence because otherwise,
12:02 it's just going to be like uh,
12:05 thanks for watching and for all things Star Fox, stick with IGM.
12:09 Do a barrel roll.
