0:16 with our sweet 83 Caddy pickup truck.

0:20 In addition to that, we have all of these parts.

0:25 I just bought this 1983 Caddy pickup truck, which is a car I've wanted forever.

0:31 And we have less than 3 days to do

0:34 a full 07k swap and shake the truck down before making

0:39 an epic 10hour drive down to LA so that we

0:43 can rally up with the OG West Coast Volkswagen crew.

0:48 This is actually my first time seeing this truck in person.

0:51 I'm super psyched about that.

0:53 Now, initially initially I wanted to drive this thing

0:57 and we were going to try and dyno it,

0:59 but there's a new development that has happened with this truck.

1:03 It only has third gear.

1:05 Yeah, we could drive it in just third gear,

1:06 but let's be honest, nobody wants to do that.

1:08 Also, I don't think just having third gear,

1:11 this truck actually has enough horsepower to even spool the dyno rollers up.

1:15 So, we're scrapping all that and we're just going to get

1:17 to work with the help from my good buddy Dave from Integrated Engineering.

1:21 you know, the guy responsible for this.

1:24 We're going to get some new life into this over 40-year-old truck,

1:27 then take it on what should be a pretty epic journey.

1:31 Now, being a 43year-old truck,

1:34 there's a lot of good and there's some bad things that I've found so far.

1:38 This is really early in the inspection process, by the way.

1:40 First thing is that this control arm bolt

1:44 is just chilling here, not even snug down,

1:47 which gave me a bunch of play in the wheel,

1:49 which may explain why this tire is uh absolutely cooked.

1:52 However, it's also on air and probably was driven really low.

1:55 Doesn't help our tire situation.

1:56 I also think I figured out what was wrong with the shifter.

1:59 It's as tight as that control arm was.

2:01 So, this connects to the shifter in the car

2:03 and then goes up in here into other shifter linkage.

2:06 So that's very likely why we were getting only third gear.

2:10 We have a lot of things that we need to also fix.

2:12 So uh I mentioned earlier fuel leak.

2:14 It looks like it's coming from this pump area.

2:17 We got a lot of wetness of fuel leaking.

2:21 So luckily all this is going to get replaced anyway.

2:24 So we don't really need to worry too terribly much about it.

2:26 I think that's enough talking.

2:28 Let's actually do some work now.

2:33 It should come as no surprise on a 40-year-old vehicle that we're

2:36 going to run into rust and potentially stuck fasteners and connectors.

2:41 So, that means our WD40 Specialist silicone penetrint degreaser

2:45 and contact cleaner are going to be free flowing.

2:48 I'll show you more on what that looks like in a little bit.

2:51 So, all of this is going away.

2:54 You can see how little the pipe end is.

2:57 So, we figured while we were there, we just go ahead and get it going.

3:07 Well, I'm already soaked and tasted a bunch of coolant.

3:11 Um, despite smelling really sweet,

3:14 it doesn't taste as good as you would like to believe.

3:20 By the way, I did confirm that this fender situation is a new

3:23 development cuz it wasn't like that allegedly

3:25 when the car went on the transport.

3:27 So, classic pig mats to save the day.

3:45 Yeah, this is a now a pigmat floor.

3:49 Oh, dude.

3:51 Yep.

3:50 Yeah.

3:51 Oh, look at this sweet air filter.

3:53 Oh, did you see the rust in the bottom of the airbox, though?

3:56 Like, how does rust get in the bottom of the airbox?

3:57 It's like sucking it out of Yeah.

3:59 This is all the rust that is inside the airbox.

4:03 You know, we're we're probably going to bust on this car a little bit,

4:05 but like let's be real.

4:06 It drives and it's 40some years old.

4:12 Old cars are awesome.

4:16 Like poking me right in the neck.

4:18 These are the worst.

4:31 It's just lower.

4:34 Well, I was going to say be carefully lower

4:36 that, but that came down much faster than I had expected.

4:39 I think we are in the clear enough that we can

4:42 come up at least a foot and go all the way.

4:50 One engine removed in about 2 hours give or take.

4:57 This is going to be the easiest part

4:58 of this whole project is taking this out with some rust.

5:02 Minimal, but we got it.

5:03 So, the bay looks pretty good.

5:05 This is going to a local dude here named Mike, who's a Mark 1 afficionado.

5:10 And just like that, our stock 8 valve out of our Caddy truck is out of there.

5:14 It's time to focus on what's going in there.

5:17 This is a 2.5 CBUA that we're going to be swapping into our Caddy truck.

5:22 The transmission is right back here.

5:23 We actually have three tables of parts that need to go in this thing.

5:26 The IE intake manifold, the IE valve cover.

5:28 We got an IE catch can over there.

5:30 And then mounts, axles, clutch, fuel stuff,

5:33 maintenance stuff, serpentine belts, a poly shift knob.

5:37 This is the last slacking off moment.

5:39 We got to get hustling cuz we have so much to do.

5:42 Probably starting with cleaning our engine.

5:45 Because we're doing a new engine, it's against the law to just drop it right in.

5:49 So, we're just spending a little bit of time with some degreaser,

5:52 getting the bay as clean as we can.

5:54 This is not a making microchips type situation.

5:56 This is like we just want it better than it is.

6:06 With our engine bay cleaned up and looking nice,

6:09 it is time for everyone's favorite part of these kind of projects.

6:13 What am I doing?

6:14 Well, you know, it's not a freaking engine swap

6:17 project of any sort if I'm not under the dash.

6:20 I'm trying to see what our wiring back here looks like.

6:23 We're just living our best life here.

6:25 This is the post lunch stretch time where we do a little yoga.

6:29 Um, while Charles does yoga.

6:32 Typically, whenever I do swaps, I'm doing my own wiring harness.

6:35 However, because we have no room for error,

6:37 I sublet out my wire harness building to Dave from TDC shop.

6:41 So, he built these two wiring harnesses for us.

6:44 This is going to make this swap plug and play.

6:46 We have like four wires we're going to have to hook up.

6:48 And that's it.

6:49 And Dave's over there working on stripping it down so

6:52 that we can get all our new IE parts on it.

6:54 Uh, so on this engine,

6:55 we're going to swap out both the exhaust manifold and the intake manifold.

6:58 We're putting on a new fuel rail.

7:00 We're going to be putting on our valve cover.

7:01 And so, all of this kind of has to be stripped down.

7:04 New parts need to go on and then just load it in just cuz we aren't

7:07 going to have a lot of space to do things once it's in that engine bay.

7:10 Did you take Are you standing up?

7:13 No.

7:13 Oh, never mind.

7:14 What you need?

7:15 I was just going to see if you would pull this harness through,

7:17 but if you're not up, don't worry about it.

7:19 Yeah, that one's got another wire.

7:20 I got I'm I'm hung.

7:24 Everything's marked, man.

7:25 You are really went above and beyond here.

7:28 Well, here's the deal.

7:29 I don't know what some of this stuff is.

7:31 Right.

7:32 Right.

7:33 This is all of the wires for the engine.

7:35 So, simple on a CIS car.

7:38 Right now, I'm actually feeling okay.

7:40 The worst thing that could happen is actually we finish

7:43 and then the car breaks down in the middle of the desert.

7:45 Like once everything's in the car,

7:47 we can plug the power link in and flash it cuz we obviously want

7:51 to have it tuned because we are going to have basically a race truck.

7:54 So, this is going to be a complete standalone thing.

7:57 Probably once we get back to the shop,

8:00 I'll take this apart and integrate it into the car.

8:02 So, it's just like it was from the factory, right?

8:04 Key in, start, and all works fine.

8:07 All right, final bolt and we're off.

8:10 We're going to change out these studs really fast as well.

8:12 We have all titanium hardware, so we're going to put all that stuff on there.

8:15 Get the new header on there, but good progress.

8:18 Okay, one old shifter.

8:23 By the way, this one was also, I think, cracked.

8:27 This is what we're going to be putting in.

8:28 This is an O2J shifter out of a 2001 Beetle.

8:34 I got some bushings I got to replace down here.

8:36 Just like the Loopo.

8:37 This is actually common on O2J O2M style shifters.

8:41 I've done videos on how to fix all that.

8:43 If you want to know how to fix your floppity shifter,

8:49 uh we don't have secondary air blockoffs,

8:52 so we're just doing a tap and die method of secondary air blockoff.

8:57 One of the bolts for the shifter broke.

9:01 I was trying to put a center punch line in it and then I

9:04 hit the center punch and then I hit it again and it went straight through.

9:06 So I'm digging through this bucket of bolts,

9:08 which is really better than trying to retap a hole anyway.

9:11 Oh, the hoola girl, it looks like she it was broken and reglued back on.

9:15 Uh so here's what I'll say.

9:17 I hate this so much.

9:20 Uh this is a very small cabin and a very small windshield.

9:24 And our our girl here uh is taking up a lot of room,

9:26 but we're going to leave it cuz Ray loves it and he's

9:28 going to have a 10-hour drive of just wobbling this freaking hoola girl.

9:35 Whatever.

9:36 For our shifter, we have this bracket.

9:38 And I did trim the shifter hole out just a little bit.

9:41 Basically, what this does is move the mounting locations of the shifter box.

9:46 There's some stuff that I had to do to the shifter.

9:48 There's a bushing completely gone for one of the cables.

9:50 And I'm sure as heck not going to have it out

9:52 of the car with no bottom cover on it and not put bushings.

9:55 That would be dumb.

9:56 Now we're going to kind of test fit the exhaust manifold,

9:59 which looks like it fits.

10:01 And now we need to put the rest of the hardware on here.

10:03 And um that's where it's going to live from now on.

10:09 As you know, projects like this always

10:12 throw you millions and millions of curve balls.

10:15 This was one I had not planned for, but it's going to work out okay.

10:18 So, you remember how sad panda we had on our tire situation?

10:23 This is, I think, a new development, but this is not.

10:27 So, we're going to get four tires.

10:28 Luckily, this tire place is right across the parking lot.

10:30 The boys from IE are going to drag these over,

10:32 get us some new tires mounted and balanced so that we can

10:34 keep going on all the other stuff that we have to do.

10:37 So, even though the 2.5 swap in a Mark 1, Mark 2, Mark III,

10:42 really is pretty straightforward and with all the parts that we got,

10:45 we don't have to do a lot of fabrication, right?

10:48 If you're doing an 07K engine and you're doing an O2J transmission,

10:53 you have to trim down this top side of the bell

10:56 housing so that it clears the bottom of the timing cover.

10:59 If you don't do this and you just go slam

11:02 the transmission on, you're probably going to crack the timing cover.

11:05 And you're not going to know until you know

11:07 and then it's going to be a really bad day.

11:09 So, make sure you trim this down.

11:10 It doesn't need a ton, just enough to clear the back side of the timing cover.

11:15 One of the only permanent modifications we need to do to this truck

11:18 is trim a little bit of sheet metal on the left front corner.

11:21 Basically, right where our fender liner would be.

11:24 We sprung a fuel leak somehow.

11:26 My assumption is the vibration of me

11:29 grinding and cutting the car jiggled the fuel.

11:32 But no better time for that to happen than while you're shooting sparks.

11:40 We need to manage our oil filter and oil cooler situation.

11:44 So, this is the one that comes on the 25.

11:47 It's got the cooler mounted to the side.

11:49 It's this cartridge leaking all over me.

11:52 You either have to replace this or like dent

11:55 the body of the car in order to fit.

11:58 What we are using is this guy right here.

12:00 This uses a spin- on filter from like a 18 turbo.

12:02 We have a bunch of different ports.

12:04 So, if you wanted to do a turbo, you could use this housing.

12:08 Super cool way to do that.

12:09 We're not going to do any of that stuff, right?

12:10 You got Dave's Dave's booing me.

12:14 Does IE have a turbo kit for these cars?

12:19 No.

12:19 Okay.

12:19 So, now you know why we're not doing a turbocharger right now.

12:22 In all honesty though, if you are turbocharging an 07K,

12:24 this is probably the piece that you want to get.

12:26 It also has provision for an external oil cooler.

12:29 It's just a cheap, really cheap um oil cooler off Amazon

12:32 because I didn't know exactly where this was going to go,

12:34 how we were going to mount it, and we'll see how that goes.

12:37 The reason I'm not doing anything else is because I still got

12:40 to like work through what some of the coolant situation looks like.

12:43 So, just so you can see, it'll be a spin- on just like a 18 turbo.

12:47 And that's what our oil filter setup is going to look like.

12:49 Even though this is like the best engine Volkswagen has made since the mid90s,

12:54 it's not problem free.

12:55 And so, we've eliminated a pretty significant failure point.

12:58 And those are expensive, too.

13:00 Once this engine's in the car, the last thing we're going to really want to do

13:03 is mess around with anything on this serpentine belt circuit.

13:06 Replacing the water pump here, super simple, is we're not doing chains.

13:10 And allegedly, this engine only had like 80K on it.

13:13 And what I'll tell you is if we end up having a timing problem,

13:16 I want you to go to the comments of this video and I want you to say,

13:19 "Charles, I told you so." It's pretty easy to tell here why I'm replacing

13:24 this tensioning roller cuz we didn't have a roller on this one at all.

13:28 That wouldn't have done us any good.

13:29 I want to show you something important

13:31 about checking rollers in a serpentine belt circuit.

13:34 Watch what happens when I spin it.

13:35 It'll spin a little bit and then it stops.

13:37 Listen and watch how long this spins.

13:41 That means there's minimal or no effective, I should say,

13:44 grease inside of our bearing for our roller.

13:47 At the end of a pretty productive first day, things are looking good.

13:50 While we still have a ton of work to do,

13:53 I'm feeling really optimistic about where we're at.

14:02 All right, so it's the morning of day two.

14:04 Bunch of I parts need to go on the engine.

14:06 Trans needs to go.

14:07 Clutch needs to go.

14:08 Engine needs to be in the car.

14:10 Wiring, fuel, coolant, all that stuff needs to happen today.

14:12 So, I want to take a few seconds just appreciate how awesome this project is.

14:16 I have always wanted a Caddy pickup truck.

14:18 It's right there.

14:19 We're in Utah.

14:20 Amazing.

14:20 The guys at IE have been so awesome.

14:23 I just want to take just take a moment and appreciate how cool this really is.

14:29 Okay, now we got to get to work.

14:35 So, this is a air conditioning delete.

14:38 We're pretty lucky that this truck didn't have power steering.

14:41 I say that now.

14:42 I'll be complaining about it when I'm cruising around a parking lot.

14:44 Because the way the 25 is on the front of this engine from the factory,

14:49 there would be one more pulley right here,

14:50 and that's the air conditioning compressor.

14:52 There's a belt that goes from the crankshaft,

14:55 hits the tensioner to the AC compressor.

14:57 Has a dual pulley that looks very similar

14:59 to this, and that drives all of these parts here.

15:02 I got this full delete kit.

15:04 So, this is a custommade pulley.

15:05 It's going to mount to this bracket, which this is actually a factory bracket.

15:09 Then, our serpentine belts are going to basically

15:11 work exactly like it did from the factory.

15:13 though.

15:21 So, this is our radiator from Autobon Autoworks.

15:23 Awesome setup.

15:24 And what I'm maneuvering, trying to make sure I get right,

15:28 is how this is going to fit in our car.

15:30 The hood latch hangs down.

15:32 We're going to be using parts from wiring of the car.

15:35 And I don't know, like with Dave's harness, does it account for fans,

15:39 too, or is that since it's part of the car?

15:41 I don't know yet.

15:41 This is not an urgent matter.

15:43 Something that we need to do is rebuild this shifter.

15:46 And like all of these, this one's actually like somebody's

15:49 been in here cuz this is not the right grease.

15:51 It appears these ball cups are no longer available.

15:56 And so I haven't had our man Pauly Dive that yet.

16:08 Even though this doesn't look very pretty, you will never see it again.

16:11 Our shifter's done.

16:12 One more check box to check the box.

16:17 What my plan is is to have these cables run right between

16:20 the rack and the firewall and then that'll go to our transmission,

16:23 which will be about right here.

16:24 We won't have to worry about interference with our exhaust.

16:26 We may end up putting a small heat

16:28 shield or something on that because of the exhaust,

16:29 but that's a not right now problem.

16:32 So, a couple of things that need to happen before our engine goes in.

16:36 We got to get our fuel lines dealt with.

16:38 So, we we had that gusher of fuel.

16:40 This only needs one fuel line into the engine because

16:43 the fuel pressure regulator is built into the fuel filter.

16:46 We have a line out of the tank which goes to the pump which then comes out

16:50 of the pump and has to go to our fuel

16:53 pressure regulator which has -6 fittings on it.

16:56 So, you have a line in, a line out, and then this is the return.

17:00 So, this is the hose that's going to go back to the fuel tank.

17:03 And what we don't want to do is make 800 trips to the part store.

17:06 We're trying to make one and then one more after a while.

17:09 So, there'll be at least two.

17:11 There's a couple of options when you do a Mark

17:13 1 swap to a more modern transmission like this O2J.

17:17 You can do the clutch cable like this.

17:19 This end will connect to the top of the Hatti clutch pedal.

17:23 Then, this end right here actually goes

17:25 to this, which is a mechanical slave cylinder.

17:28 So, like this is a factory part.

17:30 I think like 93 Euro vans used it.

17:33 It works mechanically instead of hydraulically,

17:35 whereas the transmission that this car came

17:37 out of would have been a hydraulic setup.

17:39 This is the easiest way to do it.

17:41 If you're doing this though,

17:42 I actually think the hydraulic clutch setup is a much better setup.

17:46 It's an easier drive.

17:47 It's more comfortable, especially if this is going to be like a daily driver.

17:49 This way, though, is much cheaper and much easier,

17:52 and you don't have to take your dash out.

17:54 Oh jeez.

17:55 Our original engine had a cable going from the gas pedal to the throttle body.

17:59 And funny enough, there's supposed to be

18:00 a little bushing in here that was completely gone.

18:03 It pivots on a bracket in the car like this.

18:05 So when you push the gas, boop,

18:06 it pulls the throttle cable, opening the throttle body.

18:09 We are moving to drive by wire.

18:11 We have a uh a mount coming.

18:14 This engine was initially paired to an automatic

18:17 transmission and ain't nobody got time for that.

18:19 So we got to get rid of this flex plate.

18:20 Put a clutch on it.

18:24 Flex plate gone.

18:25 Clutch, pressure plate, flywheel secured.

18:28 Should I go dirty my gloves like Paul does and then touch on the clutch disc?

18:33 I actually bought his uh flywheel holder tool.

18:36 So, this is neat.

18:36 It goes in then it holds a flywheel like that.

18:38 So, not as cool as our bent valve situation,

18:42 but I figured it was probably time to just be

18:44 a adult big boy technician and get the right tool for it.

18:48 I need to find a longer ratchet.

18:49 This ain't getting it done.

18:51 To be fair to me, I'm also supporting the engine so it doesn't go tumbling over.

18:55 Cleaned it up, put the clutch on, we're good.

19:02 In case you were wondering, this is all it takes to do a manual swap.

19:04 Just take the flex plate off, put a clutch on it, done.

19:09 I am going to now mount the transmission and see if I trimmed

19:12 enough out of the bell housing or if I got to trim some more.

19:15 All right.

19:15 So, I think next on the engine is going to be valve cover and intake manifold.

19:21 Or do you want to do those after?

19:22 I think I want to try and do those in the car.

19:26 Okay.

19:25 That may be a mistake.

19:26 Let me be very clear.

19:29 But yeah, cut to fast forward.

19:32 Charles really pissed off about making a dumb choice.

19:35 We got to get the mount off.

19:36 We got to put our mounts on.

19:37 So, we're close.

19:38 I would say hour and a half.

19:39 In fact, Ray's going to go mark whatever time it is.

19:44 And then he's going to put how long it

19:45 actually took before we got the engine in the car.

19:47 One and a half hours is my guess.

19:49 One of the major things that changes is how our engine mounts up.

19:53 We need to use the factory caddy mounting locations.

19:56 That means we have to use different mounts on our07 K.

20:00 So, we got to take off this little retainer bracket here,

20:02 which is just a couple of triple squares.

20:04 And then this guy mounts right like that.

20:07 Let's see if I can get it on as easy

20:08 as it went on when Dave and I were test fitting.

20:11 Oh, it doesn't help that the cart's rolling away.

20:16 There we go.

20:17 We're close.

20:19 Rotate in place.

20:21 I think I said it would be like an hour,

20:24 an hour and a half before the engine was ready to go in the car.

20:26 Or maybe it was in the car.

20:28 I don't really remember.

20:29 It's been 2 and 1/2 hours and I just put the transmission on.

20:34 So, big allon on my part.

20:36 But listen, I don't want to rush and end up doing something stupid like flying

20:40 to Salt Lake City to do a Mark1 07K swap in 2 days before driving 600 mi.

20:46 I don't want to do anything dumb like that.

20:48 If you can do the hydraulic setup, I think that's the way to go.

20:52 I just really hate that everything lives behind the instrument cluster.

20:56 Something else in uh in the vein of fixing our floppity shifter,

21:00 see how this one, this little slider piece has all this play and wiggle.

21:03 This actually rides in the middle and gives you a lot tighter of a shift feel.

21:08 So, if you're like, I want a little bit firmer,

21:10 more positive shifting experience,

21:12 but I don't want to do a short shifter on an O2J, this is what you want.

21:17 Where is this gasoline coming from?

21:19 This thing is still pissing.

21:20 So, like, we literally disconnected the line that's coming from the tank.

21:23 So, this is just residual stuff.

21:25 It's been pissing out for hours just like here.

21:28 Still.

21:29 Yeah, there's literally gas coming out of that.

21:31 Literally gas.

21:32 Wow.

21:33 Everything.

21:34 Hey, Charles, don't call me next October.

21:36 I won't.

21:37 WD40 brand specialist.

21:39 Penetrant and low odor.

21:41 Not that it would matter because everything smells like gasoline right now.

21:50 Hey, Charles, what is it that you were doing over here?

21:54 So, I was just about to say, you might be wondering what I'm doing over here,

21:57 and then Dave walked over and said exactly the thing.

21:59 So Dave's working on the fuel system, which is awesome.

22:02 Our kit was missing a vital component.

22:04 This kit that has this bracket and the cable is supposed to come

22:08 with a plug to plug the hole where the reverse switch goes.

22:12 So what I did was I got this M12x 1/2 bolt.

22:16 I cut it down and I put a small notch in it

22:18 so that we could do this with a flatb blade screwdriver.

22:20 So I'm going to put some thread locker on it.

22:22 I'm going to run it in.

22:23 And that's all she wrote.

22:25 We're going to chop this.

22:26 We're going to put it in the vice and I am going to make

22:28 it our friend again by putting on an actual fitting so that we can make

22:32 our own line all the way up to the fuel rail and we'll be happy

22:36 and we'll be riding around and we'll forget

22:38 that we were ever working on this car.

22:40 Now that the truck and the engine bay are pretty well sorted out, it's time.

22:45 It is time for the monumental moment of installing our engine.

22:50 I'll tell you, the 07K with an O2J transmission

22:54 is a very tight fit when installing in a Mark1.

22:57 We had a handful of times where we might have needed to massage

23:01 a brake line to be sure that we had plenty of room for our engine.

23:05 The engine bay with this engine in it looks so good.

23:09 Some might say looks like it maybe should have came this way from the factory.

23:14 We are in.

23:15 This is a victory moment.

23:17 Zayn came, saved the day.

23:19 You may also remember Zayn from such episodes as Moldy Orange GTI.

23:27 It's been 4 hours and 15 minutes.

23:31 Well, three So, we're 3 hours and 15 minutes late.

23:34 Um, but check it out.

23:35 Here's what here's what I'm excited about.

23:36 There's a ton of room to actually like put all the stuff in.

23:39 I can sort the radiator out.

23:40 Getting the manifold on is going to be tricky.

23:42 We're already prepped for that.

23:44 But I'm feeling so much better right this minute.

23:47 Now, we just got to install a motor.

23:48 I just want to point out how low this engine hangs.

23:52 So, here's the bottom of the engine.

23:55 Here's the bottom lip of the front of the truck.

26:19 We made it way worse, stinking up the entire warehouse.

26:23 So much so that I'm pretty sure these guys are never going

26:26 to invite us back for any kind of other project because it stinks.

26:30 Luckily, there's a solution,

26:32 and we're basically replacing the entire fuel system minus the fuel tank,

26:37 which thankfully wasn't the source of the leak.

26:39 So, this is the original bracket, as you can tell by the rust and grime.

26:43 On a CIS car, there's a fuel accumulator that keeps line pressure.

26:47 This deletes the return system,

26:50 and it's a built-in fuel pressure regulator and all of those things in one.

26:53 So, we're going to have one line that's going

26:55 from here back up to the front of the caddy.

26:58 The rest of the stuff has to go back to the tank.

27:00 So, this is the return to the tank that I was just finishing.

27:03 I'm going to cut this down, get it bolted up,

27:05 and then this will still sit in the factory location,

27:07 and it should be the best of both worlds.

27:09 It should be nice and clean install, and that's what we're going for.

27:12 Even though we don't have time, because we're on a timeline,

27:17 However, what we can't do is sacrifice or put ourselves in a position

41:32 Our last bit of wiring that needs to be done is connecting our fuel pump.

41:36 Luckily, our harness has a flying lead on it.

41:38 So, all I got to do is connect this gray

41:40 wire to the power side on our fuel pump.

41:42 And I learned if you're going to stick

41:43 your hand under the carpet of a 40-year-old truck,

41:46 you better be wearing gloves because there

41:48 was something real gross behind the carpet.

41:59 So, the major things we're looking for are

42:01 fuel leaks as well as things catching on fire.

43:15 so it could be immobilizer.

43:17 We have no warning lights for the car, so we don't know.

43:22 One of them is start blocked by immobilizer.

44:26 As soon as we got fuel up to the engine,

44:28 we had a gusher of fuel leaking down the front of our engine.

44:33 Even though that was annoying,

44:34 and I may or may not have thrown one or two tools, it was an easy fix.

44:38 And we just put a normal rubber fuel line on it,

44:40 solving our fuel injectors leaking.

44:43 So, I figured I'd come in here and get our shifter done.

44:45 I will tell you if you do this O2J and you still have the factory shift bezel,

44:49 it doesn't fit correctly.

44:51 What we're going to do now for temporarily sake,

44:53 cuz we're just not going to put that on.

44:54 I'm going to put this guy back on just like that.

44:59 I'll 3D print something or some kind of this bracket.

45:02 What we are going to do though is do our PolyD shifter.

45:06 I've actually never installed one of these despite

45:08 having had one for quite some time.

45:13 Out of all the things, this is the thing Paul should be here doing for us.

45:17 Oh, the nice thing about this is we'll

45:18 be able to raise this shifter up pretty high.

45:24 What we did was we swapped the crank position sensor.

45:27 That's actually a pretty common 25 problem.

45:29 Normally, you'd get a fault.

45:30 Normally, you'd see no RPM while you're cranking.

45:32 Well, we don't have a tack.

45:34 I don't think it's going to matter personally,

45:37 but we have to walk through some issues.

45:39 The final bit to our fueling problem on this car was

45:42 one of those problems that was completely self-induced by yours truly.

45:47 It seems that somehow our um feed and return

45:51 line got swapped around on the fuel filter.

45:54 Uh probably my fault to be honest.

45:57 Our feed line was going into the return hole

45:59 and the return hole was going to the feed

46:01 line of the fuel tank which means we were getting no fuel up to our engine.

46:05 It's wrong.

46:06 Not surprising.

46:07 This is the kind of stuff that can easily happen.

46:09 Probably just leave it dangling down here and uh see what happens.

46:13 With all of our fueling system issues seemingly solved,

46:16 we still have a truck that does not run.

46:19 And after working through a couple of versions of the tune,

47:33 However, we have a looming timeline and only a couple

47:36 of hours to actually get this thing on the road.

47:39 Thankfully, all the guys at IE are jumping

47:41 in and giving us a hand because without them,

47:44 I really don't think we're going to get this truck done.

47:47 My initial plan was, in addition to being done yesterday,

47:50 was to do a whole battery of maintenance on this thing.

47:52 Obviously, we have oil filter, that kind of stuff.

47:55 The thing I still need to do transmission fluid.

47:57 So, I'm actually only going to make sure that it's topped up and send it.

48:03 We'll do a full like flush when we get back to the shop.

48:06 The way you check your fluid level on a manual transmission,

48:10 many manual, not all of them,

48:11 take the fill plug out and you should get a little dribble of fluid out.

48:16 For our ECM, there's a few things that need to happen.

48:19 One, it needs to be immobilizer defeated.

48:21 Thankfully, integrated engineering already took care of that for me.

48:24 two, we need to flash the ECM with a tune file.

48:29 Not only is this going to give us a little bit of a bump in horsepower,

48:32 it'll account for our new intake manifold,

48:34 as well as some other changes that we've made to the engine.

48:37 This is a super simple process done with a laptop.

48:40 And if this were a Mark 7, we'd actually be able to flash it with our phone.

48:44 Okay.

48:44 Are we feeling good about um maybe running it, lifting it up, sanity checking?

48:49 Yep.

50:22 However, now it's time to jump in and make the drive down to California.

50:26 And for me, this is the place where the stress level is the highest.

50:45 Now, we've only put about 10 miles

50:46 on our truck and we already have tire rubbage problems.

50:50 One, the wheel fitment is not great.

50:53 And two, we have air ride.

50:54 Luckily, Mikey gave me a hand getting our alignment tweaked just enough so

50:58 that we don't rub and blow a tire out after like 50 miles.

51:06 in 40 m we've almost already consumed one.

51:10 Our shakedown time is up because we have got to hit the road.

51:14 I would love to tell you that that was the last of our truck sadness,

51:18 but as you'll see in a minute, it's not.

51:57 Earlier today, we had a tire issue, right?

51:59 And Mike did a little maneuvering with the alignment.

52:02 We got it better so we're not destroying that left front tire.

52:05 They're topping off the transmission fluid in Shurocco.

52:07 And what's cool is like when you're traveling with a group

52:10 of people in an older VW or Audi between the group,

52:13 we got it all covered, right?

52:14 One dude had a jack, one dude's got the tools,

52:16 some guy's got the fluid, couple people know what they're doing.

52:19 Not me, of course.

52:20 Not so much cool that your car's got an issue,

52:22 but it's cool that like collectively the community has your back.

52:25 That's what makes road trips like this and older cars a lot of fun.

52:28 Four or so, 5 hours into our drive and we've

52:31 made it this far and that's all I'm saying.

52:33 I'm not jinxing it.

52:40 We have made it to our stop.

52:43 So, basically what's going to happen is tomorrow we're going to meet up

52:46 with the whole crew and make our way up to wherever this event is at.

53:04 So, the fact that that thing drove 700 miles yesterday, cleaned up well,

53:09 and our only real casualty of the truck so far really is one wheel cap,

53:13 I think that's a victory, guys.

53:16 So, I just swapped out this fuel line, and I want to show you why.

53:19 This is the line that we put on it Wednesday, 700 m ago.

53:23 You can just see how swollen it is.

53:25 Definitely not like the proper fuel line.

53:28 So, kind of as a preemptive measure, we replaced it with this.

53:31 I'm going to keep both of these, though.

53:33 God forbid we have to replace it again.

53:35 If it worked for 700 miles,

53:37 it'll probably be good for the couple hundred miles we're going to drive today.

53:39 And if we need to, I have a second line to replace it.

53:42 So, with the truck fixed and our friends all here, it's time to rally.

54:56 Like the fact that we're on the West Coast,

55:14 All the hard work, all the effort, all the grind, hold on, I got to unbuckle.

55:20 All of it leads up to us being here at the Tref Punks event.

55:25 We're in Kernville, California, wherever the heck that is.

55:28 Mountains everywhere, big rocks, and the truck made it.

55:31 So, now the event actually starts.

55:33 We already got a Harley Quinn friend right here, which is super dope.

55:36 And uh this is going to be awesome.

56:27 So, since we're somewhere beautiful and there's 900 miles on the truck,

56:32 So, let's shake it down.

56:34 First of all, we've driven the canyons, the valley, the desert.

56:37 We're up in the mountains now.

56:38 Uh, and it's been amazing.

56:39 The truck has done pretty well for what it is,

56:42 but let's talk about some casualties.

56:43 Our hoola girl has hulaed her last hoola.

56:47 She is no longer on the dashboard of this journey.

56:49 She is behind the seat though, so she'll live on in the caddy forever.

56:54 Under the hood, we've fared really well.

56:57 We replaced the fuel line yesterday.

56:59 So far, knock on wooden steering wheel.

57:01 We've kept all the juices inside of the engine, coolant, oil, brake fluid.

57:05 In about 2 and 1/2 days, we did all of this stuff before we made

57:10 the 700ish mile journey from Utah down to California.

57:15 That's amazing.

57:16 And we have a little bit more driving to do, but not too much.

57:19 And you know, I'm not ripping it.

57:20 This is not Tail of the Dragon.

57:22 Although these roads are dope,

57:23 and I don't want to even dare say they may be more fun, it's done well.

57:28 Let's talk about this event.

57:29 We've had a lot of things happening recently in the car community.

57:32 Most of us have seen what went down at Slammed Enough in Gatlinburg.

57:35 This is the exact opposite.

57:37 I feel like I got a seat at the cool kid table by being invited to this event.

57:42 You know, when whenever I talk about Wookies in the Woods, which is hilarious.

57:45 I didn't even plan that I was going to wear this shirt today.

57:47 It's sort of like summer camp with all your best buddies

57:50 that are also into the same kind of stuff you are.

57:52 And this event to me is probably what

57:55 the very first Wookies in the Woods was like.

57:57 Just a handful of people enjoying the same car, hanging out, BSing,

58:01 talking about wheels, talking about their car,

58:04 showing the mods that they've done.

58:06 Listen, don't get twisted 18 turbo kids at what I'm about to say.

58:09 It's not Jetta's twosteping down the parking lot.

58:12 It's not airing out so you look cool.

58:15 Just a really chill, low-key vibe.

58:17 Dudes hanging out, having fun,

58:19 talking about the thing that a lot of us are the most passionate about.

58:23 Highly curated, highly thought out.

58:25 Scott and Whipple drove this road a couple

58:28 of days ago just to make sure everything was okay.

58:30 And what my hope is as these kind of events become more popular,

58:35 they become what car culture and what the car community actually is and pulls

58:40 the attention away from the crazy

58:42 things that happened recently around car shows.

58:45 So absolutely awesome.

59:14 We've put on the Caddy since we did the engine swap.

59:16 And despite our hoola girl, we landed at Alterman HQ almost troublefree.

59:23 About 20 minutes ago, we heard a bump and then the exhaust got super loud.

59:28 So, we nursed it back and what it looks like is the weld

59:31 on the flex pipe where it goes into the piece that attaches to the Vband broke.

59:36 I don't know if it's the flex pipe.

59:38 I don't know if it's the welding job,

59:39 but I do know that we have a downpipe that is down.

59:43 The exhaust drug on the highway.

59:46 And uh yeah, so that is our finale.

59:49 We made it almost tr that close to being trouble free,

59:53 but we'll have an exhaust to fix once we get it back to the shop.
