1:03 chasing these kids around, trying to keep up with them.

1:05 We got dance teams and basketball travel and you know,

1:08 you know, it's just everything.

1:09 We got a little bit of everything going on.

1:10 Whitworth family chauffeur, Andrew Whitworth, joining me here on the program.

1:14 dad dash, Uber dad, you know, whatever you want to call it.

1:17 Whatever you want to call it.

1:18 I'm here.

1:18 Yeah, there you go.

1:19 I need to fix my best dad ever sign cuz somebody's coming for it right now.

1:22 Is this Is this an off season beard?

1:24 Is this I'm trying to catch Fitz right now.

1:27 I I saw him yesterday on a Zoom.

1:29 He He, you know what?

1:30 Rich, he's gotten kind of high high maintenance these days.

1:33 He actually blow-dries his out now and kind of uses some Yeah,

1:37 he's using some styling products.

1:39 I You know, listen, I don't want to be

1:40 the one that puts it out there, but I'm going to.

1:43 So, you know, I I got I'm trying to pick it up a little bit.

1:46 I need to figure out how he pulls it, you know,

1:48 and and dries it out and pulls it out a little bit more, but you know what?

1:51 I'm getting there.

1:52 I'm getting close.

1:53 My gosh, if you guys start I'm working on it.

1:55 I know, you're going to start selling cough drops together.

1:58 Come on, baby.

1:59 Let's go.

2:00 guys on the cough drop.

2:01 But, it's So, wait a minute.

2:02 Before getting into the football stuff,

2:04 you're saying that um Ryan Fitzpatrick is taking a blow

2:10 dryer to his face because the beard is so thick, it requires that drying method.

2:15 Is that what you're saying?

2:16 Listen, there there may be some kind of pressing, curling iron.

2:19 I'm not sure.

2:20 I just know there's some products.

2:23 I know there's some things being used.

2:25 I'm going to let the cat out of the bag there.

2:26 He's going to be upset.

2:27 But, listen, and there's some styling going on.

2:29 All right?

2:30 He puts off this facade of no styling,

2:32 you know, he just lives free, but that's bull crap.

2:35 He's He's styling this thing.

2:37 Sherman has always said he's coloring it.

2:39 I believe it, too.

2:40 Now that I've seen the styling products,

2:43 I think there might be some coloring going on.

2:45 I you know, we got to get to the bottom of this.

2:47 I'm going to figure it out.

2:48 to get him tested, is what you're saying.

2:50 We got to test like he's he's juicing his beard, is what you're saying.

2:54 the beard.

2:54 I think there's a little There's a little bit of juice in the beard going on.

2:57 Sherman and I Sherman and I have been suspect for a little while.

3:00 Uh we'll see.

3:01 We're We're We're going to get to the bottom of it this year.

3:03 Hey, well, we're on the We're on the hunt on your behalf.

3:06 Fitz and Whit Pod is uh out every Wednesday.

3:09 The Rich Eisen Show radio audiences return.

3:11 Andrew Whitworth is back here from Prime Video

3:13 and so much more uh on the program.

3:15 What NFL story has jumped out at you?

3:20 Um what what what are you What are you curious about, Andrew?

3:24 Well, you you know this, Rich.

3:25 This time of year for me and and you

3:27 used to you used to do this uh Thursday nights.

3:29 I'm getting ready for what my travel schedule looks like, baby.

3:31 I mean, come on.

3:32 It's only a few weeks, Rich.

3:33 I mean, people get excited about the draft.

3:35 I get excited about schedule release.

3:36 I mean, I'm trying to plan I'm trying

3:38 to plan where I'm going on a Wednesday night, you know, to eat dinner.

3:41 I'm trying to plan where I'm traveling, what the kids are excited.

3:44 They want to pick their city that they get to go to dad with.

3:47 All right.

3:48 hey, you know, they want to go with dad and go hang out.

3:50 So, we're excited.

3:50 Schedule release.

3:51 You know, it's is deal for Thursday night.

3:53 This is our travel schedule, baby.

3:54 I understand that and that's right around the corner.

3:57 Um but you won't you know your travel.

3:59 You're just going to hop on the plane with Al and you know,

4:03 and whenever he's ready to go, you're going to you'll meet him uh on, you know,

4:07 air air Al and then you're going to you're going to hop

4:10 on with him and then it's just about the kids going.

4:13 It's kind of funny that you have you're

4:15 at the station in life where your kids want to go

4:17 with dad and Al's at the station of like when

4:20 when am I getting to stay at home in Los Angeles?

4:22 You know what I mean?

4:23 Like that's two totally different things for you.

4:25 Yeah, exactly.

4:26 It is.

4:27 And it is a big deal.

4:28 Two years ago I started it letting the kids

4:30 pick their show they want to go to and I

4:32 mean there's their week they want to go to and so it's been a lot of fun.

4:35 It's been fun taking them with me.

4:37 Each one of them gets to pick a week,

4:38 so there's four weeks where the kids go and uh

4:41 we're looking forward to the schedule but let's be honest, too.

4:43 It's Fitz and I's excuse to go walk around a town and meander

4:46 and find some speak easy's and hole in the walls and everything else.

4:49 So, we're we got some agendas.

4:51 There's some places we want to go.

4:53 We haven't done Minnesota on Thursday night yet.

4:55 I want to go to I want I would love to go to Minnesota,

4:57 go to a Vikings game there in their stadium.

5:00 Uh you know, you know, a couple places you want to visit.

5:02 We haven't been in Jacksonville since we started.

5:04 Uh you know, so we got a couple cities that I

5:06 want to go to, some teams I'm interested to watch.

5:08 I mean, Jacksonville Jaguars are one of the teams that I had circled this year.

5:11 I want to see them take that next step.

5:13 And then the Chicago Bears.

5:14 Uh you know, I think they're the exciting one to see,

5:16 "Hey, can we build off the magic of last year?

5:19 Ben Johnson, Caleb Williams and this relationship,

5:22 what's that next step?" I think it's Sean McVay

5:24 and Jared Goff when we got together in '17.

5:27 Uh you know, and then '18 we made that Super Bowl run and it's like,

5:30 "Can we are we going to see a next step jump

5:32 out of the Chicago Bears?" That's another exciting one to me.

5:34 Andrew Whitworth here on the Rich Eisen Show.

5:36 Schedule release is probably uh next week.

5:38 If not that, then the week after.

5:39 We'll see uh what happens there.

5:42 Let's talk about some of your uh former haunts.

5:45 The Bengals made a trade right before

5:48 the draft trading 10th overall to to the Giants

5:53 and take Dexter Jackson off their hands

5:55 and put them right there in the defensive line.

5:58 And my my thought was this is their most clear

6:02 indication yet to Joe Burrow to say we hear you.

6:07 Am I wrong?

6:08 Like was that was that it?

6:11 swing.

6:11 it?

6:11 Let's go baby.

6:12 Yes, it is and it's something you know

6:13 I talked about at the league meetings I did

6:15 an interview there with some of the Cincy media and you know it it was a little

6:19 around the Max Crosby topic and and to me it was like you know they were asking

6:23 why I had kind of said out that I thought they ought to do something like that.

6:27 It's it's really one of those things that as a franchise

6:29 you look at really the talent they've had where they've been

6:31 able to get to the Super Bowl run they had without

6:34 winning it but then making it back to the AFC championship.

6:36 They've been so close.

6:38 And it's like in those eras you want to just

6:40 not keep the great the great players you have.

6:42 You want to send a message that we're all in.

6:45 And I think that when you talk about Cincinnati

6:47 the narrative has always been all right if they draft really

6:50 well and they have some good talent they're a good

6:52 football team but they're never going to do anything aggressive.

6:55 They're never going to do anything that really goes all in.

6:58 They're just going to hope that the draft picks work out.

7:00 To me this is the first time in their history trading a top 10 pick like

7:04 this and they're saying you know what as an organization

7:08 up top from the very top in the front office we are all in on Joe Burrow

7:13 and Zac Taylor in this era of Cincinnati football

7:16 and we want to take that next step to be

7:18 one of those elites year in and year out.

7:21 And so I think this to me sends a message to that organization.

7:24 Your team needs that sometimes all the players.

7:26 Hey, we have no excuses.

7:28 Let's just go out and play elite football because we have

7:31 we can't sit here and say the organization's not bought in.

7:33 Look how much money they've spent in the last 2 years trading

7:36 away a top 10 pick for an elite player in Deshaun Watson.

7:39 Like they are all in.

7:40 So now it's time to go.

7:42 There's no excuses.

7:43 Let's go out and play our best and see where we can go.

7:46 Well, I mean, obviously I'm in Dexter Lawrence, um, not a, uh,

7:49 Super Bowl MVP from Tampa years ago,

7:51 but the the message though, specifically to Burrow.

7:55 Now, this may be a media creation, okay?

7:58 But, we're in the media.

8:00 That, you know, you see Burrow hanging out in Los Angeles a lot.

8:02 You see him at the Met Gala.

8:04 He clearly, uh, he clearly is a guy that that likes being,

8:09 um, in big towns, to be up, very honest with you.

8:12 And and if things don't work out in Cincinnati, there's a a you know, a fear,

8:19 I think, at least in in in that city, that he could pull a Carson Palmer.

8:23 And this is a way to say, "Here's Dexter Lawrence, man.

8:26 Yeah.

8:27 Here we go.

8:27 You know, we're not going to go playing for the future and getting some kid

8:30 that could real or or even an offensive

8:32 lineman that can protect him, like physically.

8:35 But, it's one, you know, hey, your 30 points now will win a game.

8:39 is a way to basically tell him that.

8:42 Right, Andrew?

8:42 Or or am I off here?

8:44 What do you think?

8:44 No, you're right.

8:45 And you look at really their Super Bowl run.

8:47 You look at when they've had these runs,

8:49 it they haven't been some top five defense.

8:51 They've been just middle of the road, not one of the worst.

8:54 And that really when you look at when

8:56 they've struggled as an organization the last few years

8:58 under Joe Burrow and with Ja'Marr Chase and Tee

9:00 Higgins and the offense they've been able to have,

9:02 it's just been when they've been

9:04 absolutely horrific on defense that they've struggled.

9:07 When they've been just mediocre at best, at least good in the situation,

9:10 third downs, getting to the quarterback, whatever it may be,

9:13 they've been able to win a lot of football games

9:15 and put them in a position to compete for a Super Bowl.

9:18 So, to me, this was their move to not only send that message to Joe,

9:21 as you're talking about, that, "Hey,

9:23 we're trying to give you all the all the, you know,

9:25 resources you need to be successful." But, we really

9:28 believe that putting someone in the center of this defense,

9:30 like, let's be able to play well first, second,

9:33 and third down, cuz that's what Dexter Lawrence does.

9:34 He wrecks havoc every single down.

9:36 With with ability to really beat double teams,

9:39 to penetrate the deep the offensive line in the interior,

9:42 and then he also is a hell of a pass rusher.

9:43 So, now you've got a guy there that can really be the center of this defense.

9:47 People forget they had two young linebackers last year, second-year guys.

9:51 You You talk about some guys who are going to be

9:53 super happy to have a disruptor in front of them now.

9:55 I think that that adds a huge element to what

9:58 they're trying to build on defense under Al Golden,

10:00 and then what they they've invested there at for H

10:02 C and keeping their guys in the secondary.

10:04 They've got some corners they really like.

10:06 I think when you look at it in totality,

10:08 they're kind of going by committee at the defensive end position.

10:11 There's going to be a bunch of guys playing there.

10:13 So, I think really as a overall defense,

10:16 they got a whole lot better this off season,

10:18 and they're going to need it because this offense,

10:20 how they've been able to perform,

10:21 this is what's going to be able to take them over the edge.

10:23 And I think for Cincinnati Bengals fans,

10:25 you've got to be excited because I think that the gripe is always

10:28 rich up top in the commitment and what are they really committed to winning?

10:34 Uh you know, and I think this was the message to the city,

10:36 to the fans, uh to the players, and everyone in that building, we are all in.

10:42 Now, let's go get it.

10:43 Andrew Whitworth, one of our favorites from Prime Video,

10:46 and obviously in a Hall of Fame career while playing

10:48 for the Bengals and the Rams here on the Rich Eisen Show.

10:51 I always shoot you straight, Andrew.

10:53 So, here we go.

10:54 We have We No, we have reached the I'm

10:56 asking you to speak for Matthew Stafford portion of Oh, here we go.

10:59 Oh boy, here we go.

11:00 I mean, I'm just coming through I just honestly, I think that inside 100 yards,

11:05 he's really struggled a little bit with his wedges.

11:07 There's a little bit He's a little off.

11:08 So, I just We got to improve the wedge game, you know, a little bit.

11:11 He's a great chipper, but just some of the full swings,

11:14 52, 56, uh he could be better.

11:16 Is that what you're talking about?

11:17 Well, how's Ty Simpson's short game?

11:19 Mhm.

11:19 Uh I don't know.

11:21 I have zero [laughter] zero clue.

11:22 I don't know.

11:23 Uh listen, we speaking from the Rich Eisen Show mug.

11:27 That's the human shield.

11:29 That's the signal.

11:29 NO, BUT IT [laughter] THAT'S GOOD.

11:34 DID THE PICK SURPRISE YOU?

11:36 Uh I I think no because only reason it doesn't surprise me

11:40 Rich and honestly did not know they were going to pick it.

11:42 I I think for me when I start to look at all right

11:45 at the when I'm around the organization the last few years and I

11:48 just look at what's been going on with Matthew kind of at at one

11:52 point not really sure how long he was going to play.

11:54 Then there was last year of kind of the dollar amount and mattered to him

11:58 and the contract and hey you do you want to explore and see what's out there?

12:02 Like to me it literally it feels like not in a negative way but just Matthew

12:05 trying to figure out what does he want the back end of his career to look like?

12:08 How much longer is he going to play?

12:10 And I think at some point as an organization

12:11 I'm just looking at what the Los Angeles Rams have

12:14 been under Sean McVay and his leadership with Les

12:18 Snead and Kevin Demoff and Tony Pastoors and those guys.

12:21 They have continued to try to hey we are always going to be successful.

12:24 We are always going all in to try and win.

12:27 So why would they not be considering hey if we have a high enough pick why

12:31 would we not want a quarterback of the future that might not play for 4 years?

12:34 The reality is we've got it so then we can go assemble around it.

12:37 You got to remember when they got there with Jared Goff it

12:40 was like hey they got there they weren't sure what they had

12:42 in Jared because he didn't have a great rookie season and it

12:45 was how much talent can we put around him and be successful.

12:47 They've kind of built a model like that already.

12:50 And so they've done that before.

12:51 So it didn't like I would say that it shocked me that they did actually do it.

12:56 But I wasn't like blown away from a building a roster standpoint because at some

13:01 point you've got to have that guy so that you don't have to go

13:04 trade three first round picks next year or whatever it may be to kind

13:08 of put yourselves behind the eight ball just to get a guy you believe in.

13:11 If you like this guy enough why wouldn't you do it?

13:14 Well and you listen you live out here

13:16 so you know the conversation that's been surrounded.

13:18 McHay Lemon was sitting there.

13:19 Reuben Bane was sitting there.

13:21 There's a bunch of young players that you know despite McVay's

13:25 pension for not playing rookies could have helped in that regard.

13:29 Yeah.

13:30 And then there's the other aspect of it that does involve Matthew

13:33 Stafford is and I'm talking to somebody you would have totally understand this.

13:38 You want to be the one to tap yourself on the shoulder and say, you know what?

13:43 This is it.

13:44 Exactly just like you did.

13:47 You tap yourself on the shoulder to say,

13:49 I'm done playing here and this starts a clock.

13:52 Not saying that Simpson's going to force it force the issue.

13:55 It just starts a clock that you just don't know when it's going to right?

13:59 So let's That's how I ended up a Los Angeles Ram.

14:01 Let's let's be honest.

14:02 In 2015, I share you know, I told this to Matthew.

14:06 You know, is that and the reason I shared it with Matthew

14:08 was just that the reality is is you know, hey in 2015,

14:14 I had asked for an extension from the Cincinnati Bengals,

14:16 didn't get any feedback about whether that was an option or not.

14:19 I was going to last year of my deal there and I dared them.

14:23 Actually, I was I just kind of shared the story cuz it's a funny story,

14:25 but actually the week of the draft,

14:27 I got asked by the media and I dared the Bengals to draft a tackle and I said,

14:30 if you draft a left tackle, they're going to watch me play for four years.

14:35 So I dare you to do it and they didn't just draft a left tackle, Rich.

14:39 They drafted a first round left tackle and a second round left tackle.

14:43 So they drafted two the first time in NFL history.

14:46 They drafted back-to-back tackles.

14:48 So they took my threat seriously, but guess what?

14:51 Those guys watched me play for seven more years.

14:53 So the reality is like that doesn't do anything to Matthew Stafford.

14:58 Like it doesn't.

14:59 Matthew Stafford will play the game of football

15:02 for in the NFL for as long as Matthew Stafford wants to.

15:06 Anybody would be absolutely insane to not want this guy to be

15:10 your quarterback and I think the Rams feel the exact same way.

15:14 And that is that you are going to be the guy

15:16 here until you don't want to be the guy here anymore.

15:18 Now, the is it also at the same time two things be true?

15:22 Was I pissed off at the Cincinnati Bengals for drafting those guys?

15:26 I was.

15:27 Now, I still love those guys up.

15:28 The first thing they did when they arrived

15:30 at Cincinnati was came to Big Whit's house.

15:32 I had them over for dinner.

15:33 We got to visit.

15:34 I mentored them.

15:34 I was there for them to raise them up.

15:37 Uh just like anybody else,

15:38 but it did not mean that I was very happy with Mike Brown and the organization.

15:41 And so, I think it's okay.

15:42 Like this is the game of football.

15:44 Like this is our our nature.

15:45 Every single year you're fighting for your job.

15:47 And if you're not, you've lost your mind and you're going to be gone soon.

15:50 And so, you're always fighting to hold your spot.

15:53 That's what the game of the NFL is about.

15:55 It's called not for long because you are fighting

15:58 to hold the position you hold each and every year.

16:01 And so, I think Matthew Stafford's been in that before.

16:03 He's known that, "Hey,

16:04 I've got to always earn it." I don't think that changes things for him,

16:07 but it also doesn't mean that he's probably

16:08 that happy with the fact that they did it.

16:10 Great.

16:11 That's okay, too.

16:12 And and that all those things can be all right, and we can all move forward.

16:16 We can disagree on whether or not it should have been done,

16:19 and we can commit try to win a Super Bowl together

16:21 cuz that's what we signed up to do in the first place.

16:23 So, I think that like in my situation, that's how the mentality I had.

16:26 And you know, that's what I've shared with him and anybody that's asked.

16:30 Uh it doesn't mean it's a fun time,

16:32 but uh this too shall pass, and let's go win a Super Bowl, baby.

16:36 Yeah, and it didn't look like a fun time

16:37 in the press conference that Thursday night either, you know?

16:40 And And And Les Snead and um McVay had fun with that the next night,

16:44 too, where McVay admitted he came across as Mr.

16:47 Grumpy.

16:47 And we were all in the media saying, "What is happening?" You know,

16:51 but at at the end of the day though,

16:53 I mean, it is going to be on McVay to negotiate all of this.

16:57 And he can do it.

16:58 And the Rams You know what I mean?

17:00 been they've been through ups and downs.

17:01 They've been through a lot of different things throughout his time there.

17:03 Uh and hey, I think you know,

17:05 it's what what Jordan Rodriguez Grumpy Gate or whatever it is they've called it.

17:11 Uh listen, hey, there's a lot of things so

17:13 I can get hot and bothered about and to upset.

17:15 I've I've been around a long long enough whether it

17:17 be a block or a scheme or a you know,

17:20 something you say the wrong way in the way they want to articulate it.

17:23 Can be conversations, you name it.

17:24 I mean, listen, Sean's an intense guy.

17:27 It means a lot to him to one be a fantastic leader,

17:32 but two to to always be putting everyone around him in the best spot possible.

17:36 And so who knows, you know,

17:38 that honestly what set him off there in that situation,

17:41 but he was clearly just a little frustrated with whatever conversation

17:44 it could have been that he had, but I know this.

17:47 Matt, you know, he's a 100% was

17:49 behind Ty Simpson being the quarterback there cuz

17:52 I know that Sean McVay is calling the shots with Les right along Les Snead.

17:57 So I know that he's fully committed on having

17:59 him there and I know that he also thinks

18:01 that Matthew Stafford is an absolute G and will

18:04 be the quarterback there as long as he wants to.

18:06 So those things to me are both

18:09 true and and sometimes there's there's disagreement,

18:11 man, and there's a you know, hey, I wish you'd have done it this way

18:14 or maybe we should have done it that way.

18:15 I mean, I I think that's inevitable that you're not going to get

18:18 along at times you're going to see things should be done a different way,

18:21 but the reality is is hey man, as an organization you're trying to do what's

18:25 best for the organization for now and the future.

18:29 And also for Matthew Stafford, it's like hey man,

18:32 nobody loves you more than this locker room

18:34 and this city and what you've done for it.

18:36 Let's go win football games.

18:37 Let's go compete at the highest level and try to win

18:40 another one cuz it's in SoFi Stadium again this year.

18:42 Last time it was in SoFi Stadium you were holding that Lombardi.

18:46 So let's go do it again.

18:47 Yeah, and then you were in the confetti with your kids and saying you know,

18:50 let's go let's go hang out more.

18:52 You know what I mean?

18:53 Like that that happened.

18:54 And so we'll see I'm down to come to the confetti again.

18:57 I just don't want to play in the game or be hit by anybody.

19:00 [laughter] Rich, okay?

19:00 So that's that's okay.

19:02 That's all I want to do.

19:03 Makes sense.

19:03 All right, so say hi to Fitz for us if he can hear us

19:07 over the the hair dryer to He's probably blow drying his beard right now.

19:11 The girls are lined He's probably got all his daughters lined up.

19:13 They're blow drying their hair and he's blow

19:15 drying the beard like right there along beside him.

19:17 You know what I mean?

19:18 So Newest episode of Fits and Whit coming out on a Wednesday.

19:21 Today is that.

19:22 So it's great to see you, man.

19:24 And I'll see you in uh in Tahoe

19:30 The road to Tahoe begins now, Rich.

19:33 Come on.

19:34 Short game.

19:36 You got to get up and down, Rich.

19:37 Well, you have to get it to that spot to get it up and Well,

19:40 you got to get off the tee as well.

19:42 And then you got to hit the second shot, unfortunately.

19:43 But you know what I mean?

19:44 You'll get there.

19:45 You'll get there.

19:46 You play your own ball at the American Century Championship.
