I finally found the world’s largest keyboard
Glarses
0:00 Google defines a world record as the single best ever performance, achievement,
0:05 or extreme occurrence that has been officially verified on a global scale,
0:09 which ironically describes a word that already exists.
0:14 Greatness.
0:15 People strive for greatness in many different ways.
0:17 YouTubers strive for the most subscribers.
0:19 Sprinters strive for the greatest times.
0:20 Billionaires strive for the greatest tax write-offs.
0:22 But I strive for greatness in an often underappreciated category,
0:27 the humble computer keyboard.
0:30 I have dedicated my life to learning, building, typing,
0:33 and knowing everything there is to know about this rectangular marvel.
0:36 And in my pursuit of greatness,
0:38 stumbled upon a subcategory of keyboards that has
0:41 captivated my attention like no other, the mega keyboard.
0:45 Superizing stuff is funny.
0:47 A fateful onetoone recreation of something small
0:50 has entertained mankind since the dawn of time.
0:53 So, it's no surprise that when I first saw
0:55 Razer's 64 times recreation of their legendary Black Widow keyboard,
1:00 it was love at first sight.
1:02 And it was something I desperately needed to have in my own keyboard collection.
1:07 So, I called Razer to ask if they'd sell it to me.
1:09 Is there any chance I'd be able to buy that giant keyboard you had at CES?
1:13 And they said no.
1:15 They they said no in a lot of different ways.
1:17 Um it was quite heartbreaking.
1:19 So I did what any rational person would do and set out to make my own.
1:24 And this is where I joined the world record keyboard race.
1:29 But of course with greatness comes competition.
1:33 Many other mega keyboards have been made with varying levels of size and scale.
1:38 Some actually quite a lot bigger than the 6T keyboard I'd made.
1:42 But I'll be honest, I don't personally put any of them
1:44 in the same category as what I or Razer have previously built.
1:47 And neither does the Guinness World Records.
1:50 I do believe that the biggest part
1:51 of a true superersized record has to do with authenticity.
1:55 It's fairly straightforward to take smaller parts,
1:58 especially internals like the circuitry and scale harder to find
2:01 larger parts like the key caps or the case out
2:04 of different materials in different shapes and sizes that represent
2:07 the thing at hand but aren't faithful to the true design.
2:11 And so days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months,
2:14 and it seemed like my keyboard would remain
2:16 as the greatest mega keyboard ever created until
2:21 this is the largest mechanical keyboard and mouse ever made.
2:26 Alienware.
2:26 Alien freaking Wear hired out a team of professional engineers and with a budget
2:32 of $50,000 created what seemed to be
2:36 a faithful recreation of their AW420K keyboard.
2:39 Pretty sure this has us be Garcus' keyboard was around 6 ft long.
2:45 To my excitement and dismay, it clocked in at a staggering 17 ft 3 in 17t 3 in.
2:57 And just like that, my record was gone.
3:00 It didn't even last a year.
3:02 I won't lie, part of me was happy
3:03 that someone had taken up the mantle and challenged
3:05 me because that meant I could jump back
3:07 into the fray and start plotting a new giant keyboard.
3:10 But let's just do some maths very quickly.
3:14 My keyboard is about 6x2.5 ft, is made of aluminium,
3:18 weighs around 100 kg or 220 lb,
3:22 and cost about 12 grand for parts manufacturing and transporting all in all.
3:26 The Alienware keyboard is supposedly 17x 7 ft.
3:31 cost 50 grand, isn't made out of aluminium,
3:35 and was likely transported via their own vehicles instead of by sky.
3:39 If I were to beat the record at a minimum,
3:42 I would need to make a keyboard three times as deep, long, and wide.
3:46 So, uh, 1 2 3 27 times bigger than my existing giant keyboard.
3:50 And to faithfully use real parts,
3:53 I would have to design and manufacture my own switches and key caps.
3:57 Because surprise surprise, no company makes switches or keycaps that are
4:00 432 times bigger than a keyboard switch.
4:03 glasses.com.
4:04 And I'd have to use probably a literal metric
4:07 ton of aluminium and other metals to make it.
4:10 It would be the size of a room and it
4:12 would take a super gosh darn trailer just to move it.
4:17 So, I strategically decided that maybe I shouldn't build
4:21 this, but just until I could verify that the alien
4:24 keyboard actually a did exist and b was
4:29 as big and superior as reported with my own eyes.
4:33 Cue the search.
4:37 Unfortunately, I sent every email, every tweet, DM I've called,
4:42 begged, reached out to my entire network, but nothing.
4:45 I cannot find this keyboard.
4:48 It's like it doesn't exist.
4:49 Or more accurately, there's something or someone
4:52 out there preventing me from seeing it.
4:55 This was over a year ago.
4:57 And honestly, since then, I I gave up.
4:59 And so that means that since I haven't seen
5:01 it and I can't verify it is actually real,
5:04 my keyboard is still the biggest faithful
5:06 recreation of a mechanical keyboard ever made,
5:08 I'm still the victor and therefore I don't
5:12 have to make another giant keyboard until 18 months
5:16 from my original keyboard when I was trying
5:18 to build one of Google Japan's April 4 keyboards.
5:20 This was naturally a comically scaled keyboard of an already comical keyboard.
5:25 But during the filming of this project, after at this point I had all
5:28 but given up hope in seeing Alienware's giant keyboard,
5:31 I get a message from a friend
5:32 and fellow YouTuber who wanted to show me something.
5:38 All right, put me up right here next to you.
5:41 Oh, baby.
5:42 All right.
5:43 You know what I'm going to show you?
5:47 Well, you you know what I'm gonna show you.
5:50 You know what it is.
5:52 Okay.
5:52 Okay.
5:52 Okay.
5:52 Okay.
5:53 Are you ready?
6:01 You know what I'm going to show?
6:03 You know how many people know where that is?
6:05 You know who's got the key?
6:10 It's mine.
6:12 It's mine.
6:14 It's all mine.
6:17 I'm the only one, Garsus, that knows where it is in the entire world.
6:22 It's that way.
6:24 It's that way.
6:25 It's in my possession.
6:27 Uhhuh.
6:28 Yeah.
6:29 Yeah.
6:30 There he is.
6:31 They let me have it.
6:32 He's here.
6:33 The moment.
6:34 [Laughter]
6:37 This is it.
6:39 What's up, man?
6:42 Dude, are you ready for this?
6:44 I don't think I am.
6:46 This is a big moment.
6:47 It's a genuine
6:48 I have been driving on trains and flying for over 2 days and now I
6:52 was 15 minutes away from potentially seeing something
6:55 that would shatter my entire body of work.
6:57 That's the one.
6:58 That's the one.
6:59 It's in there.
7:00 That's what you came for out of all these.
7:02 That's the one right there.
7:07 [Music] Okay.
7:11 I don't say this a lot, but what am I doing?
7:17 Where am I?
7:20 It's safe to say I was feeling uncomfortable.
7:24 I'm scared of a lot of things.
7:26 Spiders, the dark, the tax man, but I've never ever been scared of a keeper.
7:33 Be the one after almost 2 years trying to find this thing.
7:38 If anything, I found my peace in them.
7:41 But what I was about to see, well, you can just see it for yourself.
7:51 Okay, let's do this.
7:54 Maybe I don't actually have to see it.
7:55 Maybe I can just just go home.
7:58 Just go home.
7:58 Yeah, I see you, man.
7:59 If I see it, then I can't unsee it.
8:02 But if I wisfully choose to not see it,
8:06 I can go home and not potentially do something
8:09 really expensive that's going to take me a long time.
8:12 You can choose to not do this.
8:14 I always have.
8:14 It's an option.
8:15 It is an option, but I did spend two and a half days trying to get here.
8:20 Um, all right.
8:24 Can't be that bad.
8:25 It can't be that bad.
8:26 It can't be that bad.
8:27 I've seen worse.
8:28 I've built every terrible keyboard possible.
8:31 This is just right.
8:33 Okay.
8:33 Three, two, one.
8:53 You done?
8:56 Yeah.
8:54 Let's get out of here.
8:55 What' you think?
9:07 Looks like a keyboard.
9:09 Yeah,
9:09 that's a good start.
9:09 It's like a big one, though.
9:11 It's like the biggest one ever.
9:34 You think you can you can outdo it?
9:40 This is your entire life.
9:42 I mean, it's all right.
9:43 It's all It's all right.
9:45 It's all right.
9:46 It's I mean, like,
9:47 it's okay.
9:48 It's like they were compensated for something, really.
9:50 Yeah.
9:50 You know what I mean?
9:50 Like, who needs a keyboard this?
9:52 Yeah.
9:52 Probably doesn't even feel that good.
9:54 [Laughter]
9:59 It felt pretty good, didn't it?
10:00 It's kind of satisfying.
10:01 Click the Click the Windows key.
10:03 It's the best one in my opinion.
10:04 It's a [Music] Yeah.
10:12 Yeah, man.
10:13 [Music] I mean, one second.
10:20 Just Just Let's see if it's really that big.
10:29 How big is that tape measure?
10:31 Uh 16 ft.
10:34 You exactly.
10:35 No way.
10:37 I think you're going to need a bigger one.
10:40 That's a [Music] like what one?
10:45 Okay.
10:47 Yeah.
10:46 Six and a Okay.
10:50 6 and8 ft.
10:53 81 in wide.
10:54 All right.
10:54 And then try to go the other way.
10:56 You don't need to.
10:57 That's how really the keyboard is actually measured by how wide it is.
11:00 Well, you got to Yeah.
11:01 Why?
11:01 Width from over there to over here, right?
11:04 From that way to this right here.
11:06 We don't have to, right?
11:07 I mean, I think you do.
11:08 I mean, you feel all this weight.
11:09 You got to measure the keyboard.
11:10 You got to go from there to
11:12 I just when I go home and I'll just say it's it's pretty big.
11:15 Yeah.
11:15 Yeah.
11:16 Pretty big.
11:16 You don't need the stats or anything.
11:18 Nobody needs to know exactly, you know, not a competition.
11:24 [Music] Literally, are you kidding me?
11:31 Well, uh, it's Is that all the tape measure?
11:37 Yeah, that's all of it.
11:38 Um, literally just a little bit out.
11:41 Let's just add Why Why is there no numbers right there?
11:43 Doesn't go farther than that.
11:44 It It stops at 499 in.
11:47 That's where it's not.
11:48 So, it's probably about 502 in long.
11:52 Do we need to go to like a hardware store, get a bigger tape measure?
11:56 No, cuz that made me feel bad to see the exact measurement.
12:00 Like, we just now I know it's about um it has been great seeing you.
12:10 Let me type my name.
12:14 That was so impractical.
12:20 S E S and that is all she wrote.
12:34 You shut that.
12:35 We can just leave it open.
12:36 Maybe someone will steal it.
12:37 It'll disappear.
12:40 Go.
12:41 That would make me a hater and that means they win.
12:58 We can just delete the footage, right?
13:00 Nobody actually has to know that I've come out here, right?
13:03 Yeah, we can get rid of this.
13:04 It's just Yeah, it's just right us.
13:06 Okay.
13:06 Yeah.
13:12 Just shut it off.
13:18 Amazing.
13:19 [Music]
