Real tools for real classrooms: A direct look at the next chapter of Khan Academy.

0:11 Um, we can't wait to show you what's coming to Khan Academy this school year.

0:16 My name is Audrey and I am a product manager at Khan Academy, um,

0:21 focused on the teacher experience and I'm so

0:24 excited to introduce you to the reimagined Khan Academy.

0:29 And I'm also joined by my colleague Gintautas and I'll

0:32 actually pass it over to him to quickly introduce himself.

0:36 Yeah, hi everyone.

0:37 My name is Gintautas Miliauskas.

0:38 I'm also product manager.

0:39 I work closely alongside Audrey.

0:42 Um, so, so excited that all of you get a sneak peek at what is coming.

0:46 I think all of us, uh, here at Khan Academy can't express how excited we are

0:51 to get this in the hands of all of you, uh, for the next school year.

0:54 I will be in the background answering

0:56 any questions that come in through the Q&A.

1:11 So, today I'm going to walk you through what the new experience

1:15 will look like both for you as the teacher and for your students.

1:19 So, you'll see how to get set up,

1:22 what tools are available to you in your classroom,

1:25 and what the experience actually feels like from the student side.

1:31 So, a few quick housekeeping items before we dive in.

1:34 Um, first, we are recording the session

1:37 and we'll share the link with you afterward.

1:39 Um, second, as Gintautas mentioned,

1:41 feel free to drop questions in the Q&A as we go

1:44 and then someone from our team will answer questions throughout the webinar.

1:49 And then lastly, I'll be sharing my screen

1:52 for the demo so you can follow along live.

1:56 All right.

1:57 So, before, um, getting into the demo,

2:00 I wanted to start by giving you a little context

2:03 for what you're about to see with this reimagined experience.

2:08 So, we've always known that Khan Academy works,

2:12 but we also heard pretty clearly from students that it could feel like a chore.

2:18 Um, sometimes it was overwhelming and they didn't know what to do next.

2:23 And for teachers, while the tools were dependable,

2:26 they weren't always built in a way that matched the flow of their classroom.

2:31 So, we took a step back and started

2:34 by listening to students and teachers and asking,

2:37 "How do we keep everything that works, but make it more motivating?

2:42 And for students, how do we make practice feel less like a task

2:46 and more like play so that we can motivate them to keep on learning?" So,

2:52 with the reimagined Khan Academy,

2:54 we're combining our trusted mastery-based learning

2:57 with new AI-powered tools to support teachers.

3:01 And all of that is designed

3:04 to create a more classroom-focused experience that's clear,

3:09 more engaging, and easier to use.

3:13 And before I jump into the demo,

3:14 I did want to quickly ground us on one important thing.

3:18 And this is especially if you are already using Khan Academy,

3:22 and it's that everything you rely on is still here.

3:26 So, you can keep using your existing account with all of your classes and data.

3:31 You still have access to the full content library.

3:34 So, every video, exercise, and article that you've used in the past and loved,

3:41 mastery-based learning is the same.

3:43 Students still move at their own pace and receive immediate feedback.

3:48 And it is still free.

3:50 That hasn't changed.

3:52 What's new is really the experience around it.

3:55 So, it's more fo- it's a more focused interface, um,

3:59 with new features designed to motivate students

4:03 and make things easier for you as a teacher.

4:06 And as we go through the demo, I'll call out what's new,

4:11 what will feel familiar, so you always know what you're looking at.

4:15 And so with that, let's start with the teacher side.

4:23 All right.

4:24 And I'm going to start right at login.

4:26 When you log in to the new experience for the first time,

4:29 you'll see a short onboarding experience to orient you.

4:33 We'll also ask you for a couple of details

4:35 if you don't already share that information with us.

4:38 And those are going to be things like, "What school do you teach at?

4:41 Whether you teach your teacher as part of a school or tutor or coach?" Um,

4:47 so, since I've already logged in once

4:50 to the new experience as this specific user, I won't see that onboarding,

4:54 but I wanted to call that out for you all as something

4:57 you can expect to see at the start of the school year.

5:01 All right.

5:02 So, after logging in, you'll land on your teacher dashboard

5:05 and it's welcoming and organized around how you actually work.

5:09 So, on the left-hand menu, you can see, uh, your classes.

5:13 And then you can also access the content library,

5:17 uh, Khanmigo teacher tools, and then,

5:20 um, any of the documents that you've created

5:22 if you've used teacher tools in the past.

5:25 And so, if you have, just know that you can also continue

5:30 to access those same documents, um, as well.

5:34 And then over here at the top, you'll notice our Khanmigo assistant search bar.

5:40 Um, and it lives in a few places across the experience.

5:43 This is brand new, um, but we'll actually come back to that in a moment.

5:48 So, from the dashboard,

5:51 you'll see your classes either in the select a classroom drop-down,

5:56 uh, menu over here at the top or as tiles at the bottom of the page.

6:01 And if you don't have a class yet, you can easily create one from this page.

6:06 So, I'm going to add a class here.

6:09 And just like you can in the current experience,

6:12 you can import from Google Classroom or you

6:15 can choose to create classes, uh, manually.

6:18 And I'm actually going to choose the manual option

6:22 and call this, let's call that grade three, block 30.

6:29 [sighs and gasps] All right.

6:29 And then you can add students either through, um,

6:32 having them join with the class code,

6:34 um, or you can manually create student accounts.

6:38 And I'm actually going to choose this option as well because we've made

6:41 some improvements to this to help save time when you're setting up your rosters.

6:46 So, now you can just take your roster and I'm

6:49 actually going to take some students from a sample roster,

6:52 paste them right in, and Khan Academy will help

6:56 me create accounts for all of those students in bulk.

6:59 And so, hopefully that just helps save time at the beginning of the school

7:02 year when you are trying to get your students all set up.

7:07 All right.

7:12 So, now that we've created a class,

7:14 I'm actually going to switch into one of the existing classes

7:17 I've created so that we can look at the classes in depth.

7:21 And inside the class, you'll find tabs across the top

7:25 that let you switch between different class views.

7:27 So, things like assignments, students, reports.

7:30 Um, and we're actually going to start with the students tab.

7:33 So, this is where you can manage your rosters.

7:37 Um, you can view all the students who have joined your class.

7:40 You can add more students using the methods I mentioned before, um,

7:44 and also Google Classroom if you didn't

7:47 initially import your class from Google Classroom.

7:51 And then for each student, you can also manage their details.

7:54 So, you can edit their names,

7:57 add them to different classes, remove them from a class, etc.

8:00 All to just kind of help you easily get those rosters set up.

8:05 All right.

8:06 So, now that your students have joined your class, your roster is set up,

8:09 let's walk through how you would find and assign content.

8:13 So, before assigning anything,

8:16 you'll want to make sure that you've selected the courses your class is using.

8:20 So, if you head over to the settings tab and look for the class courses section,

8:27 um, you will see what courses are linked to this class.

8:31 And from here, you can actually click edit courses

8:34 to preview all the courses that you can link.

8:36 Um, you can also preview individual courses and then

8:39 just check them by to add or remove them.

8:43 So, once those are set,

8:45 you're ready to start start assigning, uh, content from those courses.

8:51 But if you're not ready to select a course just yet,

8:54 you can also explore Khan Academy's

8:57 full content library right from this interface.

9:00 So, if you click on explore library, you can jump right into a course.

9:05 So, I'll jump into fourth grade.

9:09 And then from here, I can browse all of the units

9:12 associated with this course and then also all of the videos,

9:16 articles, or exercises, um, that come with it.

9:22 All right.

9:22 So, now let's go back to Khanmigo, um,

9:24 assistant and talk about that because that really

9:28 changes how you can interact with the platform.

9:31 So, instead of clicking through menus,

9:34 you can just ask for what you need and Khanmigo

9:37 can help you find content and navigate the platform.

9:41 So, for example, I could type something like,

9:45 "Show me exercises on fractions for fourth grade." And Khanmigo

9:57 will pull up a set of relevant results um

10:01 from content across the platform along with some helpful context

10:05 and guidance about those results that you're seeing on the right.

10:08 So, as you can see here, I see all the different um Khan Academy tools,

10:13 videos, exercises, and I can filter to the things that I actually need.

10:17 And then on the left, um I see a a summary of what those results

10:21 are and some guidance on how I can use them.

10:25 And as I mentioned, this here at the top,

10:28 but also in a few places throughout the experience.

10:32 And then the other thing I wanted to call out is tools.

10:34 I know we quickly went over this, but um

10:37 just wanted to dig into this a bit more.

10:39 Um so, over here you'll see the Khan Academy tools,

10:42 and if you haven't used these tools before,

10:45 they are AI-powered tools to support instruction.

10:48 So, things like lesson hooks, IEP support, and more.

10:53 These are meant to help support your workflow and not add more to it,

10:57 and all teachers will be able to access Khan Academy tools um this fall.

11:04 All right.

11:04 So, let's go ahead and create an assignment.

11:07 So, when I head over to the assignments tab for a class,

11:12 um there's actually a few different ways that you can create an assignment,

11:15 but let's do this from the assignments.

11:18 Um and I click add assignment, there are a few different types to choose from.

11:24 The first is unit missions, and this is where students can work through

11:29 an entire unit at their own pace toward mastery.

11:33 Uh the second is content assignment,

11:35 which is where you can assign specific or individual videos,

11:40 exercises, or articles.

11:43 And then lastly is writing coach, um which is where you uh can your students

11:48 can work on essays uh with support from Khan Academy.

11:52 But let's actually click on unit mission.

11:56 And then from here, you can choose a course.

11:59 Um as you can see, I can see all the courses that I linked to my class,

12:03 but you can always edit those.

12:04 So, I'm going to choose second grade math.

12:07 And then I'm going to pick the unit that matches what I'm teaching.

12:10 Um so, my students and I are working on place value.

12:14 And then you can choose a due date.

12:17 Um and then, you can also choose who you want to assign it to.

12:21 For the purposes of this demo, I'm just going to assign it to the whole class,

12:24 but I can assign it to multiple classes

12:26 and then also choose which students within that class.

12:31 All right.

12:32 And so, that's one way to create an assignment.

12:35 If you still prefer to explore the library first to assign content,

12:39 you still have that option as well.

12:41 Um so, when you go into the library and I'm going

12:44 to click uh since we were assigned from the second grade math course,

12:49 um I'm going to go take a look at that course,

12:53 and you can click on Let's say I wanted to assign this video,

12:58 and I can easily assign um from the top as well.

13:02 And that's it.

13:03 Once you've created that assignment,

13:04 it will appear right away for your students in their queue,

13:09 and we'll take a look at what that looks like in a bit.

13:14 All right.

13:15 So, now that your students you created

13:17 your assignments and students are working on them,

13:20 you'll want a quick way to see how things are going.

13:23 And so, if you go to your reports tab for a class,

13:29 you'll find a few key but familiar views.

13:33 Um the first is activity report,

13:35 and this is a quick snapshot of how students are doing.

13:39 Um you can see how much time they're spending on Khan Academy,

13:42 what skills they've that they've worked

13:44 on, and then their overall progress toward mastery.

13:50 Um and then you can also drill down within a student um to see

13:54 specifically what skills they've worked on and what

13:58 is their proficiency in those skills.

14:01 And then the skills report um lets you zoom in on mastery at the class level,

14:06 so you can see how your class is progressing across different skills.

14:10 So, I'm actually going to go to second grade

14:13 cuz this is where my students have been working.

14:15 And as you can see, I can see which students um

14:19 have worked on the skill and what is their proficiency level,

14:23 which have not yet worked on them, and who I probably should chat with.

14:27 Um and then you can also see where students fall within this.

14:32 So, for example, Annie familiar on this skill,

14:37 and that's probably something I'll want to dig into a bit more.

14:41 Okay.

14:42 And then lastly is the assignments report where I

14:45 can track completion and scores um for anything I've assigned.

14:50 All right.

14:51 So, lastly, let's head back to the overview.

14:56 Um over on the right, you'll see something new,

14:59 which is a card showing your class's progress um toward a gem challenge.

15:07 And here's how it works.

15:09 So, as students practice by completing exercises and finishing assignments,

15:15 they will earn gems along the way,

15:18 and we track that progress across the class, and as a teacher,

15:22 you can set a shared goal that everyone is working toward together.

15:27 So, as you can see here, I can edit this reward.

15:31 I put pizza party, um but you can also

15:33 do homework tasks or whatever really motivates your class.

15:37 Um but it's a really low It's really low effort to set up,

15:41 but can be a great way to build momentum and motivation in the classroom.

15:45 And I'll show you what this looks like on the student side as well.

15:50 So, on that note, let's actually switch over to the student experience.

15:58 And same approach as before,

16:00 I'll call out what's new and what will feel familiar.

16:05 Um students can sign in the same way they always have.

16:07 Um they can use the same login credentials, and like teachers,

16:12 the first time that they log into the new experience,

16:15 they'll go through a quick yet playful onboarding um

16:19 just to get oriented and personalize things a bit.

16:24 And then they'll land on their learner dashboard.

16:27 So, let me go ahead and log in.

16:33 All right.

16:34 So, from here, students can move between

16:36 the different classes that they're enrolled in.

16:38 So, over here at the top, uh student can toggle between different classes if

16:43 they're in multiple classes that are using Khan Academy.

16:46 And within each class, they'll see what they have to work on.

16:50 So, things like unit missions that have been assigned to them.

16:54 They can also click view all assignments to view any type

16:57 of assignment um that has been assigned to them by their teacher.

17:00 And they can just jump in right from this page.

17:05 And then on the right, they'll also see their progress toward mastery.

17:08 So, they can quickly see how many skills they've reached proficiency in, um

17:14 and then how many school skills they also need to work on.

17:19 And then below that, they'll see their progress on missions.

17:24 And missions are new to the experience,

17:27 um and they're essentially learning goals made up of lessons and activities,

17:32 and they help organize assignments and guide students on what

17:37 to do next by breaking work into smaller, manageable steps.

17:41 And I'll show you more about what missions look like for students in a bit.

17:47 All right.

17:47 And then lastly at the bottom, students will also see the gem challenge,

17:51 so they can track their class's progress to that reward.

17:55 Um and they can also see their own contribution to that goal.

18:01 So, let's take a look at assignments because this is

18:05 one of the biggest changes on the student side.

18:09 So, when students click start or view all assignments,

18:13 they'll land on their learner queue.

18:15 So, I'll go ahead and click start.

18:18 And instead of a list of assignments,

18:20 they now see a much more focused view of what

18:23 to work on next with Khan Academy guiding them along the way.

18:28 So, this is also where we help students pace their work.

18:32 So, from the queue, students can move through their daily or weekly missions,

18:37 so they can stay on track without feeling overwhelmed.

18:40 So, for example, I'm looking at my daily mission, and I can quickly see, okay,

18:45 once I finish these three assignments,

18:47 I'll reach the end of what um I need to do today.

18:52 And then if I go to view all assignments,

18:54 I can see my whole I can also see what it looks like for the rest of this week.

18:59 Um so, I know that, okay,

19:01 these are all the assignments I need to work on before the end

19:04 of the week just to kind of continue to stay on track.

19:08 And the goal here is to make it easier for students to understand

19:12 what they're supposed to be doing and to make that clear right away.

19:18 All right.

19:18 So, now we're actually going to dig into an assignment.

19:22 Um and let's just retake the one that we've done before.

19:27 All right.

19:28 So, once a student clicks into an assignment,

19:30 the actual learning experience will feel very familiar.

19:35 They go straight into the content,

19:36 whether that's an exercise, video, or article.

19:40 And then as they work through those exercises,

19:43 they're not just seeing right or wrong.

19:45 They're getting hints, worked examples, and support along the way.

19:50 So, uh as an example,

19:52 let's say that let's get this one wrong and say this is 10.

19:58 Khan Academy will still give you those steps like

20:01 it does in the current experience so that I

20:03 can work through this problem and know how

20:06 to work through it when it comes up again.

20:09 And they can also reference their lessons folder over here at the top.

20:14 Which is tied directly to what they're working on.

20:18 So, we'll provide exercises, videos,

20:20 and articles that students can reference while

20:24 they're working on their assignment so that they

20:28 can continue to move through their assignment

20:32 without having to stop and wait for help.

20:35 So, again, the idea is to help keep

20:38 students moving and get unstuck on their own.

20:43 All right, and then on the left you may have noticed Camilo.

20:49 [snorts] And Camilo here acts as a motivational presence.

20:52 It's there to encourage students and celebrate

20:55 progress and keep them moving when they're stuck.

20:59 So, I'm actually going to show you what it looks like if I get something right.

21:06 So, Camilo just kind of helps me celebrate

21:09 all of my little wins throughout the assignment,

21:11 but if I'm stuck kind of encourages me to keep moving on.

21:14 But, it's a simple way to support students in staying engaged as they work.

21:20 All right, and now the part that students tend to love which is gems.

21:25 So, over here at the top students can

21:30 keep track of the gems that they've earned.

21:33 And as I mentioned before, students can earn gems by completing assignments

21:38 and working through their daily and weekly missions.

21:41 And as students accumulate gems,

21:43 they can unlock hats and accessories to customize Camilo.

21:48 So, for example, I've unlocked the party hat, but every 50 gems that I earn I

21:54 can unlock something else to customize my Camilo.

21:59 And this is just a fun way to keep students motivated.

22:02 And then like I showed earlier,

22:07 students can also access the gem challenge from here so they can continue to see

22:13 their classes combined progress toward that goal

22:16 and then easily reference this as they're completing assignments.

22:21 And then on top of that, students can also still maintain streaks.

22:25 So, the more they use Khan Academy, the more they can extend their streak,

22:29 which is just another way to help keep students engaged over time.

22:34 So, that's a quick look at the student

22:36 experience from logging in to knowing exactly

22:39 what to work on to all the ways we try to motivate students along the way.

22:46 And with that, that's actually a look full experience

22:52 for both you as the teacher and for your students.
