0:01 Luther always going to take me there.

0:02 I used to think my mama wanted Luther and Luther wanted

0:05 her, but that's not the case apparently from all the documentary.

0:08 That's a whole another story.

0:10 Luther was my god daddy.

0:18 Sip, celebrate, and show some love.

0:20 Welcome to Cheers to that Mother's Day edition.

0:23 I'm your mixologist, your history curator,

0:25 your call your mama right now reminder, Denise ahead.

0:29 Today we're shaking things up,

0:31 literally raising a glass to the queens who raised us, the women who loved us,

0:36 checked on us, prayed for us,

0:38 and still somehow know everything we're doing before we do it.

0:42 So, we got some beautiful ladies in here.

0:46 Yes.

0:46 Can we do a little roll call?

0:48 I'm Bobby.

0:49 What you working on, Bobby?

0:50 Come on.

0:51 Give me some more, Bobby.

0:52 Well, this we're flying a boss.

0:53 I mean, this is Fion.

0:56 Yeah.

0:55 And I'm working on flying a boss.

0:57 Period.

0:57 I love your hair, by the way.

0:58 Thank you.

0:59 She's big.

1:00 She's bold.

1:03 I'm Fion.

1:05 Yes.

1:05 We're in a duo together.

1:06 We make music and we're working on a project right now.

1:12 Okay.

1:11 My name is Courtney B and I'm a comedian.

1:15 I currently do a show called We Play in Space with Nick Cannon.

1:18 I'm on Wilding Out.

1:19 We on tour.

1:20 We going on tour in June.

1:21 So, make sure y'all pull up to one of the tour day.

1:23 Can I get some tickets?

1:26 Sorry.

1:26 Look at Look at that.

1:27 Look at this.

1:28 Okay.

1:28 They only give us a certain amount.

1:31 Now, before we get into these drinks,

1:33 let me tell you how Mother's Day even became a thing.

1:36 It started when women were tired.

1:38 Tired of war, tired of loss,

1:41 tired of watching the world fall apart and deciding they were going to fix it.

1:46 Back in the 1800s, Julia Ward House said enough,

1:49 calling for mothers across the world to come together for peace.

1:52 And at the same time,

1:54 Anne Jarvis was outside organizing moms, cleaning up communities,

1:58 and taking care of families on both sides of the Civil War.

2:02 When she passed, her daughter, Anna Jarvis, stepped in like, "Oh,

2:05 we not letting that legacy go unnoticed." So,

2:08 she created a day to honor mothers properly.

2:11 By 1914, President Woodro Wilson made it an official holiday.

2:15 But here's the part people don't talk about.

2:18 Mother's Day isn't just an American thing.

2:20 From festivals in Ethiopia to community traditions in Nigeria

2:24 and Rwanda to Mothering Sunday in the UK,

2:27 celebrating moms has always been a global thing.

2:30 Mothers don't just raise us.

2:32 They shape us.

2:33 They ground us.

2:34 They carry us even when we acting like we know everything.

2:37 From the music playing in the house on Saturday

2:39 mornings to the life lessons we finally understand now.

2:43 So go ahead, grab your glass because today we're mixing up love,

2:47 laughter, and legacy.

2:48 Let's shake something up.

2:50 All right, this first drink is for the rhythm that raised us,

2:54 the music in the background, the lesson in the foreground,

2:57 and a house full of love that somehow ran on her energy alone.

3:01 This one smooth, bright, and full of love.

3:04 We're going to build this one on the rocks.

3:06 This is a Saturday morning kind of cocktail,

3:09 so we're not going to take too long building it.

3:10 We're starting out with 2 ounces of Black Mama vodka.

3:14 Of course, we're doing 2 oz cuz mamas be tired.

3:17 Up next, we're going to do.5 pineapple juice.

3:21 It's giving a variation of like a mimosa.

3:23 Up next, five OJ.

3:26 And to make it a little sweet cuz mama

3:28 just so nice when the house is finally clean, we're going to do.5 vanilla syrup.

3:33 You're going to give that a little stir.

3:37 Top off with more ice and a little bubbles.

3:41 Remember, this is almost like a mimosa.

3:45 Garnish with an orange.

3:47 We're going to top off with a gold straw cuz mama ain't sipping out no plastic.

3:51 To the music, to the memories,

3:52 and the mamas who always make it feel like home, no matter where they are.

3:56 This is Saturday morning.

4:03 Now, y'all know we talking about mamas today.

4:05 Yay.

4:05 Talking about we talk about all the things they do inside, outside the house,

4:09 all the lessons through music, recipes,

4:13 all those little things we didn't realize was shaping us until now.

4:16 I got a question.

4:19 Okay.

4:18 What song takes you back to your mama house?

4:21 Gladest night.

4:23 Mhm.

4:22 You're the best thing that ever happened to me.

4:25 She used to sing that to me all the time.

4:26 She still do though.

4:27 That's like that's like our bop.

4:29 You know what I'm saying?

4:31 Glattis got some hits now.

4:32 or some Luther Van Ross.

4:34 Now, Luther Luther always going to take me there.

4:36 I used to think my mama wanted Luther

4:37 and Luther wanted her, but that's not the case.

4:40 Apparently, you haven't seen mom.

4:42 That's a whole another story.

4:43 I'm sorry.

4:44 I didn't Luther was my god, which my mom had frames of him with the family.

4:50 Really?

4:50 Still does.

4:51 Still does.

4:51 I love that.

4:53 But she also loves Glattus Night.

4:54 And you're the best thing that ever happened.

4:56 She has a song for like each of her kids and that's my oldest brother's song.

5:00 That was her first kid.

5:01 How is he the best thing waiting until the other kids come out?

5:03 I feel you.

5:05 I feel you.

5:05 Now, you said Denise Williams.

5:06 Denise Williams.

5:07 Cuz you love me, baby.

5:09 Oh, yes.

5:10 She loved that whole Greatest Hits album.

5:12 She loved it all.

5:13 But I love it.

5:14 What about you?

5:15 It was Anita Baker.

5:17 Anything.

5:17 Another Detroit Queen.

5:19 Yes.

5:19 Anything Anita Baker, but I knew that once I heard Anita Baker,

5:23 it was like, "Get up now cuz you about to wipe them baseboards." Spring.

5:28 I was like, "Okay, wait a minute." But you know,

5:30 once you heard that music, that that's like our black tradition.

5:34 You know what I mean?

5:34 Once you heard that music, you knew what time it was.

5:37 We knew if we got that clean and done at a certain time, we was going out.

5:40 Outside.

5:41 Yeah.

5:41 We had a full day ahead of us.

5:43 Yeah.

5:44 Do you think that tradition is lost?

5:46 These kids ain't clean a day in their life.

5:48 These kids are spoiled.

5:50 Yo, girl, before I was a comedian, I was a teacher.

5:52 Okay.

5:53 Oh, so you know the T.

5:54 Remember when you was a kid,

5:55 you used to be excited TO GO TO THE CHALKBOARD AND WIPE OFF THE CHALKBOARD.

5:58 M.

5:58 THEY AIN'T GOT Y'ALL BOYS NO MORE.

5:59 THE KIDS can't even wipe them.

6:00 Everything won't be smart.

6:01 I NEED SOMETHING DUMB.

6:02 BUILD EVERYTHING DUMB IN BACK in the classroom.

6:07 All right, y'all.

6:08 Next up, this one is for the moms who didn't just raise you, they built you.

6:12 Strong, bold, classy with a little edge.

6:15 The kind of energy that let you know you can have fun, but don't get it twisted.

6:19 Cuz when you outside, you representing me and the family.

6:23 So act like you got some home training.

6:25 Let's get into this.

6:26 Now, we're going to shake this cocktail.

6:28 So, we're going to start off with 1 oz of lemon juice.

6:32 Fresh lemon juice, of course.

6:34 To give it some flavor, we're going to do 3/4 oz of lavender syrup.

6:39 You can get creative and replace this syrup too with your favorite flavors.

6:42 To give it some balance, we're going to do.5 orange laor.

6:46 And of course, we're going to finish off with 2 oz of black own vodka.

6:51 You can get creative here, too,

6:52 cuz this cocktail is really good with tequila, too.

6:55 Up next, we're going to add our ice and shake.

7:03 Now, this cocktail is really special because we

7:06 are going to serve in a beautiful blackown glassear.

7:12 Serve up.

7:12 So, you're going to pour directly into your glass.

7:14 Look at that color.

7:15 Come on.

7:16 Period.

7:17 And we're going to make her nice and pretty with a lemon wheel.

7:21 And we going to give mama her flowers.

7:23 Add a bit of color.

7:25 Now, to the women who taught us how to stand on business,

7:27 I present I'm not one of your little friends.

7:36 Is there a moment or like a phrase, a saying,

7:40 something your mama would tell you that you finally get now?

7:43 I knock your block off.

7:46 Damn.

7:47 I knock your block off.

7:48 I I get it.

7:52 I never knew what a block was until I got older and I was like,

7:56 you know what, cuz I was bad.

7:58 My mama would say I'm a like two piece

8:00 and a biscuit and it wasn't about the meal.

8:03 Your mama's going to give you a twopiece and a biscuit.

8:06 So now being a stepmama, my baby knows I'm like two piece and a biscuit.

8:11 And as you get older, then you can be put in a blender.

8:15 You blending the kids.

8:16 Blend them.

8:17 Put them in a ninja.

8:18 Mhm.

8:19 Absolutely.

8:20 Not a neutra bullet.

8:21 She said, "I'M A NEUTRAL BULLET." YOUR ASS.

8:23 I'm mixing your ass up.

8:24 Y'all don't have to have abusive sins.

8:28 Thank you.

8:29 Mine was more loving.

8:30 I think it was a big phrase that we had to say every morning when we woke up.

8:34 She made us do control of thought, control of action, devotion to one's purpose,

8:38 faith in a teacher's ability to teach the truth,

8:40 faith in one's ability to assimilate the truth,

8:43 faith in oneself to will the truth,

8:44 freedom from resentment under persecution, freedom from resentment under wrong,

8:48 the ability to distinguish right from wrong,

8:51 the ability to distinguish real from unreal.

8:54 We had to do that every single morning.

8:56 And I was always frustrated.

8:57 As a kid, you don't want to do that.

8:58 Like, as a kid, you're like,

9:00 "What am I doing this for?" And now I'm a woman and I have a baby

9:03 and I have a kid and I understand why she implemented that every single morning.

9:07 And you pass it down and I'm going to pass it down to my baby.

9:10 Oh, that is beautiful.

9:11 That's amazing.

9:12 I know that instilled a lot of just confidence and understanding of self girl.

9:17 Now that's good.

9:18 She ate that up.

9:19 She really did.

9:19 She ate that up.

9:20 She did.

9:21 I don't know where she got it from, but she ate that up.

9:23 Um, mine is also positive.

9:25 My mom didn't threaten me much.

9:27 I'm her only daughter and like I was a high-risisk pregnancy.

9:32 Um so she thought I wasn't gonna make it.

9:34 So not many threats.

9:36 Not many threats that we both made it out.

9:39 Yeah.

9:39 That's real.

9:40 Um but every day before school she would just say, "Bobby, apply yourself." Mhm.

9:45 And you know what?

9:46 I would just brush it off.

9:47 I don't know.

9:47 Like what is she talking about?

9:49 And now I really I'm just starting to apply myself now.

9:53 Cuz it's like it's not that you don't have it within you.

9:55 You're just not applying it.

9:58 You must apply yourself.

10:00 Wow.

10:00 How often do you tell yourself that now as an adult?

10:03 Like, do you see yourself?

10:04 I just started yesterday.

10:05 That's beautiful, Bobby.

10:06 Okay, Bobby.

10:07 Long as you start.

10:08 Long as you start.

10:09 Start somewhere and it's still with you.

10:11 Okay.

10:12 And this last one, this is for the mamas who didn't have to say a word.

10:16 That look said everything.

10:17 A little spicy, a little smooth, just like her attitude when you tried it.

10:22 All right, we are shaking this cocktail and we're

10:25 going to start off with 1 oz of grapefruit juice.

10:29 Then we're going to do.5 spicy pineapple in memory of the look.

10:34 Let's do 1 oz cuz I don't know about y'all, but my mama only used the look.

10:38 Think I got a whooping by one time.

10:40 All right, up next we're going to do.5 or finishing off with a Blanco rum.

10:48 Blackowned, of course.

10:52 Grab your ice.

10:53 It's like a spicy tiki cocktail.

10:56 Shake.

11:00 We're going to serve this one on the rocks

11:02 cuz that's how my mama's attitude was sometimes.

11:05 All right.

11:06 Add fresh ice.

11:07 You never want a dirty dump.

11:09 You can use a rocks glass or you can use

11:11 your favorite glass as long as you add fresh ice.

11:13 Pour over that orot.

11:16 Makes it nice and creamy.

11:18 We're going to garnish with a fresh grapefruit slice and pepper.

11:22 And we left the seeds in once again,

11:24 just in honor of that look when you knew you tried it a little bit too hard.

11:29 And the next step was the belt.

11:31 And just to really hone it in, we're going to top it off with black own bitters.

11:35 Just a dash to the side eyes that kept us alive.

11:39 This is the look.

11:45 What's the most mama line?

11:47 You know, like you you hear it, you read it, you know it came from a black mama.

11:50 Give you something to cry about.

11:52 Bought you in this word.

11:52 I'll take you out.

11:54 Mine is just uh you already know.

11:57 Just drop it.

11:58 Don't Don't do that.

11:59 Oh, because I said so.

12:00 I used that one.

12:01 That one's good.

12:02 I hated that one.

12:02 But that one can stop me.

12:03 That whole like why?

12:04 Because I said so.

12:06 I wish we could use that at work.

12:08 Because I said so.

12:09 That's the email.

12:10 That's the email to whom it may concern.

12:12 Because heard my last email because I said it.

12:20 Now that we've been keying, we going to get into cocktail confessions.

12:24 Okay.

12:24 Just going to ask you a question and you're going to answer honestly.

12:27 All te your nails are so cute.

12:30 Thank you.

12:31 That's like what's your guilty pleasure black comfort movie or show?

12:39 I would say Low Down Dirty Shane.

12:42 I watch that a lot and I kind of know it by heart.

12:45 They got some good looks in that movie.

12:46 Yeah, those Jada Pen Ivory W.

12:51 I mean, it's just like phenomenal.

12:54 That's a good one.

12:55 Favorite scene.

12:57 Muhammad Ali can't even spell Muhammad Ali.

13:01 Has your mom ever embarrassed you so badly

13:03 in public that you considered pretending you don't know her?

13:05 What happened?

13:07 No.

13:07 I mean, when she would ask the ladies if their boob if their boobs Yeah.

13:12 If she would ask people like, "Are your boobs real?" I would be like,

13:15 "Oh my god." But no, not really.

13:17 Can't relate.

13:17 Can't relate.

13:20 Have you ever gone through your mom's phone,

13:21 her purse, or her things looking for something?

13:24 What did you find?

13:25 I mean, I always hated going through my mom's purse cuz like there's so

13:28 much Can I say Did they say we can say There's so much in there.

13:32 Like I would hate when she would be like,

13:33 "Can you get something for my purse?" Like there's like pots and pans in there.

13:37 Like oh my god.

13:38 So no, I never went through any of her stuff.

13:44 Mama want a drink.

13:46 Mama ready at the happy hour starts now.

13:51 All right.

13:51 So this is mix it to win it.

13:53 You guys are going to create a cocktail

13:56 inspired by your mom's saying or her personality.

14:00 Give me that like mom vibe.

14:02 I need you to name it.

14:04 And your time starts now.

14:07 You ain't going to teach us nothing.

14:09 Make it good.

14:10 And I want something strong, too.

14:13 I want something strong.

14:14 What is this?

14:14 Ginger.

14:15 I can't tell you, but you can sniff it.

14:17 You can taste it.

14:19 Yeah, you can use the straws to taste it.

14:22 Okay.

14:21 I can't quite tell you,

14:23 but you've got some really good things in front of you to create something.

14:26 No, we do.

14:26 I like what you doing.

14:27 I like what you doing there.

14:28 What you doing there?

14:29 She like what you doing?

15:28 Now, who is she?

15:30 That's June's tea.

15:34 That's cute.

15:40 I don't know.

15:40 What does that even mean?

15:42 That's um you know that's emotion there.

15:46 Now is this inspired by your mom's personality or like um I saw green tea.

15:52 My mom loves green tea.

16:08 This is Yay Oshune.

16:10 Okay, we call our mother Yay.

16:12 Yay means mother in uh Nigerian Euraba.

16:16 Okay.

16:17 Oshune is yellow and honey and sweetness.

16:21 So, I decided to make it yellow.

16:23 She loves oranges, too.

16:24 Oshun loves oranges.

16:26 The goddess.

16:26 Okay.

16:27 Herself.

16:28 Okay.

16:28 And she reminds me of my mother.

16:29 So I love it.

16:30 And the name again?

16:32 Yay.

16:32 Yay.

16:32 Oshun.

16:33 And last but not least, who?

16:34 That's um Jackie's jab.

17:09 Really?

17:08 Yeah.

17:08 Let me tell you why.

17:19 It remind Not so much.

17:20 It's a lot of rum, but it it's The rum is smooth, though.

17:24 And but if I finished it, I indeed my block would be knocked out.

17:27 I know.

17:27 That's right.

17:28 Love the concept.

17:29 The concept.

17:32 All right.

17:32 So, we talked about mamas like they was legends cuz they are.

17:36 Exactly.

17:36 But they're people, too.

17:38 So, let's give a moment to honor our mothers.
