Actually Stranded on a Deserted Island for 42 Hours (real emergency)

0:41 In our last episode, we flew to the Mariana Islands,

0:43 a collection of islands in the Pacific Ocean

0:46 that strangely [music] enough belonged to the United States.

0:48 After learning about these islands complicated history,

0:51 our [music] next episode was supposed to be about

0:53 one of the furthest ones of this chain, Pagan.

0:56 one of the most remote islands in the world where

0:58 two people currently live completely isolated on an active volcano.

1:03 It is so remote, in fact, that the only way to reach it was to charter a local

1:07 fishing boat [music] and sail 12 straight hours across the Pacific Ocean.

1:12 However, we had no idea that what we thought would be a simple

1:15 day trip on a boat was about to take a very unpredictable turn.

1:36 This is maybe going to be one of the more brutal things we're going to do.

1:45 it turned into a full-on rescue mission.

3:14 99% of the people that we meet tell us it's not possible to go.

3:18 We've been able to charter a fishing ship,

3:21 working with some of the local authorities, etc.

3:23 to make it happen on such a short notice.

3:26 But uh yeah, this trip doesn't exist.

3:28 It's something that we have just fabricated essentially.

6:25 but I didn't imagine it was going to be like a little bit afraid,

6:30 But definitely one of the more scary things I've done.

6:47 We were now officially out in open waters.

6:51 10 men on a tiny fishing boat.

6:53 It's difficult to convey through video how grueling

6:56 the beginning of this 12-hour journey already was.

6:59 The waves were much bigger than anticipated,

7:02 which meant we were each locked in our chairs,

7:04 unable to sleep, and trying to focus on not getting seasick.

7:08 We made a short pit stop at the nearest island

7:10 to refuel the boat with extra gas we had stored on board.

7:18 First time you're riding the boat.

7:20 Before continuing our journey into the deeper waters,

7:23 wary of the 36,000 ft drop to the ocean floor below us.

7:34 Just got super rocky.

7:38 We've been on ocean for 9 hours now and uh

7:41 it just been like this hour in hour out.

7:44 It's very hard to film because you need to like stay focused on the horizon.

12:34 and see if we can find somewhere to stay, set up camp.

12:39 Gugwan and the next island over is called Alamagan.

12:43 But our final destination was meant [music] to be Pagan.

12:46 But as the sun is now setting,

12:48 we've had too many engine issues already and the waves

12:50 are too big out in the open ocean,

12:55 and see if a crossing could be possible tomorrow.

20:50 trip like this, it would be a safety reserve of extra fuel stored on the boat.

20:55 But given our emergency situation,

20:57 we were about to use that extra [music] fuel to move

21:00 to the nearest island over which has more infrastructure for us to survive from.

21:04 With the risk being that if for some reason the reserve fuel isn't enough,

21:08 we can end up stranded in open water and [music] there

21:11 is no help available from the mainland in case that happens.

21:14 We would need to call the US military for a full-on rescue mission

21:19 coming all the way from an island hundreds of miles away called Guam,

21:22 which would not only cost [music] tens of thousands of dollars,

21:25 but as you can also understand, is not something one calls upon lightly.
