Kevin Hart Learned Comedy And Food Don't Mix | Extended Interview | The Graham Norton Show
The Graham Norton Show
0:00 Listen, Kevin, you've Have you You've never been in a film together?
0:02 NO.
0:03 NO.
0:04 OH, THAT WAS COOL.
0:08 YEAH.
0:07 Came out like,
0:13 but the plan is you'd like to, right?
0:15 We are trying like we're, you know, we're we're both from Philly, too.
0:18 So, it's like we we love to work together.
0:20 We've been looking at a few, you know, few things,
0:23 but uh Kevin stays really busy and it's uh it's hard to fit into his schedule.
0:28 I I I do stay busy.
0:30 Uh I you know I think that the beauty of the idea of us working
0:36 together is is such a wonderful thing that we just want to make sure it's right.
0:41 Right.
0:40 We want to make sure like we don't want to just throw something together.
0:43 We feel that when that moment happens,
0:45 it should be something that people hold on to and really
0:48 gravitate towards and understand how special of a moment it is.
0:51 And you know I
0:52 we could do Wild W too.
0:56 Oh my god.
0:57 DON'T LAUGH AT THAT IDEA.
1:03 I'm so down.
1:04 No, if you did work together, I mean,
1:06 the world would go crazy, but Philadelphia might explode.
1:10 Philadelphia loves work.
1:11 When you go back to Philadelphia, presumably you visit this.
1:14 Oh, yeah.
1:14 This is a 65 foot mural of Will Smith, right?
1:19 But but someone else has a mural in Philadelphia.
1:22 Who?
1:22 Who?
1:22 Well, to show it after.
1:23 Well, it's only ever.
1:26 It's not as big.
1:28 It's not as big, but it's beautiful.
1:30 You should have showed mine first.
1:32 I think it all.
1:35 No, no, but except Kevin.
1:38 Kevin though, you do have one up on Will because that's a special day.
1:42 That is That is That is a special day for me.
1:44 Um I have a day in Philadelphia,
1:46 but that's uh that's Max's and it's a it's a place
1:49 where I frequent it to get cheese steaks for my child.
1:52 You have a day It's Kevin Hart Day.
1:54 A Kevin Hart Day.
1:55 Philadelphia.
1:55 Kevin Hart Day.
1:56 Yeah.
1:56 Does Philadelphia have a Will Smith day?
1:58 No.
1:58 No.
1:59 No.
2:01 Have a Will Smith day in Philadelphia.
2:03 Yeah.
2:03 No.
2:03 That's That's
2:04 We need to sort that out.
2:04 THAT'S WHAT I'M THINKING.
2:06 THAT'S WHAT I'M THINKING.
2:06 YOU BROUGHT your kids back to Philadelphia, but not for like Kevin Hart Day.
2:10 You brought them back to where you're from.
2:13 Okay.
2:13 And was it was it to impress them?
2:16 WHY DID YOU bring them back?
2:17 Well, you know, I'm uh parenting is something that I take pride in.
2:20 Um, you know, I want to make sure that my kids understand
2:23 the value of hard work and and what the meaning behind it should be.
2:27 So, you know, I don't want you thinking that what we have
2:31 and and our lifestyle is how it's supposed to be because it's not.
2:35 There's a there's a reality behind it.
2:37 So, I want to take you to where dad is from.
2:39 So, we take a trip, you know, we take a real trip to Philadelphia.
2:43 Uh, and you know, we land and I said,
2:46 I'm going to show you where I grew up so you can understand.
2:47 You land in your private Thank you.
2:53 Life's lesson.
2:55 Listen, every lesson has a moment of of disbelief.
2:58 Just follow me for a second.
3:00 I'm with you.
3:00 I'm with you.
3:00 The lesson didn't start till we got off the plot in the car
3:07 and start driving through in the neighborhood where I was from.
3:10 Then that's where where are you from?
3:14 All right.
3:15 So, we we pull up to my place and you know, I give this long speech.
3:20 It's like a moment.
3:21 Like, it's like 7:00 a.m.
3:23 I got there when nobody would be there.
3:24 And I'm like, "Look, I didn't have Okay, look.
3:27 This is This is all we This is the grass.
3:30 See this little thing?
3:30 It's all the grass we had.
3:32 I had to sit on the step.
3:34 I waited for the bus here.
3:35 I walked 2 and 1/2 miles to get from here to where I had to go to meet my mom.
3:41 This was not a situation that you were comfortable in.
3:43 And I get done and my kids ARE LIKE, "WE WANT TO LIVE HERE.
3:53 This place is a piece of show what we HAVE IS NICE, BUT YOU GOT TO WORK FOR IT.
4:00 WE DON'T WANT TO GO HOME." LET US GO UPSTAIRS.
4:05 I literally had to stop the lesson trip to Philadelphia short.
4:10 Let's just go back home.
4:11 I'm just going to I'm going to show you books from now on.
4:14 No more live event.
4:18 And then since then you've gone a bit crazy.
4:21 You're doing this bucket list thing.
4:24 NOBODY LIKE NOBODY'S LIKE YOU'RE DOING THIS BUCKET LIST CHALLENGE AND IT'S
4:27 LIKE YOU want to die like you're doing a lot of dangerous things.
4:31 Yeah.
4:32 you know um a a huge part of of my childhood
4:36 was was marked by fear you know and there you you can
4:41 generate you know great things and you can succeed and you
4:44 can win but you can never really be happy if you're scared
4:47 you know so I turned 50 and I had created this wonderful
4:51 life and this wonderful career but I felt trapped by being
4:55 Will Smith and a part of that freedom was well I
4:59 have kids so I can't do this um well I'm famous,
5:01 so I can't say that.
5:03 Well, you know, people look at me this way, so I can't behave like that.
5:06 And a part of the bucket list was I just wanted to give myself the freedom
5:09 to do all of the things that I was put in my mind that I couldn't do.
5:14 And there's, you know, I'm adventurous, so I I've always wanted to be that.
5:18 So, yes, like fast cars, driving, swimming with sharks,
5:21 and like now swimming with sharks, I shouldn't have done.
5:24 That's the one.
5:25 Oh, yeah.
5:25 I shouldn't have done that.
5:26 I got down there with those sharks,
5:27 and I was like, I will, now you just being stupid.
5:33 Man, this is stupid.
5:34 That was Kev was like Kev was like, "Hey, Will, man, listen.
5:37 It's just we going to keep it simple.
5:39 One word.
5:39 STOP." At some point, you got to tap back in, brother.
5:46 You gone.
5:49 Shots are real, man.
5:52 Bucket list are all things.
5:52 I mean, David, do you have a bucket list?
5:54 I want to learn how to belly dance.
5:56 You think you can help me with that, honey?
5:58 YES.
5:58 IN FACT, I CAN.
5:59 IT'S SAFE.
6:00 It's safe.
6:00 No shark.
6:01 No shark.
6:04 Can I just say that's a very not a very ambitious bucket list.
6:10 Hey, she's lost.
6:21 KEVIN, is there anything on your bucket list, Kevin?
6:28 Uh, I don't I don't like to help death.
6:30 No, no, I know.
6:33 Death is coming.
6:34 I'm not I'm not I'm not going to speed it up.
6:38 I'm going go ahead and chill out.
6:39 I I don't want to do anything.
6:41 I'm I'm content.
6:42 That's what I am.
6:43 Very content.
6:44 And And Kevin, obviously, you're like not just a standup,
6:47 you're like a standup superstar.
6:48 You sell out arenas all over the world.
6:50 The best of our time, right?
6:57 But what's nice to know is it wasn't always like that.
7:02 Oh no.
7:03 Like what was it?
7:04 What did you perform?
7:05 You performed at a seafood festival.
7:06 I mean which which show you want to know about?
7:12 It was I think they wanted was it crab?
7:14 I had I had a crab fest that crab fest.
7:18 What is that?
7:19 In the beginning of the stand of comedy.
7:21 You're not you're not performing in in luxury, you know,
7:24 venues that wherever they feel that they can build
7:27 the stage and make money is where you going.
7:29 So, there was a crab fest.
7:32 They was like, we going to book some talent comedian talent and I was like,
7:37 all right, well, you know, I'm available.
7:40 And uh I don't know if you guys have
7:41 ever tried to tell a joke about people cracking crabs.
7:45 Not the best environment at all.
7:47 I mean, literally the frustration that comes from not
7:51 being able to open a crab is scary.
7:54 If you're not funny at the same time,
7:56 the stuff that you hear, I remember hearing a woman, an older lady who was like,
8:01 she was cracking crab cuz this is how you crack crack.
8:07 Looking at me and she's like cracking a crab.
8:09 And I tell a joke and the joke doesn't work.
8:11 And I remember this lady just going,
8:13 "Oh no." And I I don't think I would much rather be booed.
8:21 The dis the disappointment that came from her voice and then oh no.
8:28 She said baby.
8:28 It was like oh no baby as if I made a mistake with my choice of life.
8:35 Like like I'm not doing it wrong.
8:38 I I mean, you know, look,
8:39 the the the the hardship that I went through has helped help helped build
8:43 me into the person I am today where I I can take so much.
8:46 But I I've been through it all.
8:47 I was I was hit in the face with a buffalo wing.
8:50 Um I performed at Don't PERFORM AROUND FOOD.
8:54 NO MORE.
8:55 When you go to my shows now, there's no food allowed.
8:59 Uh it was it was a it was actually a male
9:01 strip club that they shut down for comedy for the first half.
9:05 So it was like it was a bunch of it was ladies in there and you
9:10 know it was just supposed to be us
9:11 performing for these women that were riled up.
9:13 First thing I got on stage when they introduced
9:15 me and this lady was LIKE PULL IT OUT.
9:17 I SAID hey that's not me.
9:22 I'M NOT HERE FOR THAT.
9:23 I'm here to entertain.
9:25 These are jokes.
9:26 I know who's got kids.
9:28 I start I start trying to merge into kid material and this one
9:32 dude from the back I just remember this dude from the back.
9:34 He was like, "That's enough." And he just threw a buffalo wing at me.
9:39 It landed.
9:40 Hit me hit me in the cheek.
9:41 A little bit of sauce.
9:42 Got like right here.
9:44 Buffalo sauce is hot.
9:46 So I start I assumed that it was a woman with a deep voice.
9:50 So I was like, "Who threw it?
9:51 WHO THREW IT?" Cuz at the end of the day, I'm a man.
9:53 I'm a man first.
9:54 Don't disrespect me.
9:56 He stood up and he was like,
9:57 "I did it." And I I contemplated just taking my clothes off.
10:01 mother.
10:03 The only way to GET the crazy thing is,
10:09 you know, I haven't seen Octavia in forever.
10:12 So, I ran into Octavia at Cineacon.
10:15 We're there and we're both doing promo and I saw the trailer for her film
10:20 before we got to Cinecon because I like to know what's going on.
10:22 And I haven't seen her.
10:23 Keep in mind, I haven't seen her, but I
10:25 saw the trailer and I remember I was like,
10:26 "Oh, THIS THIS IS DIFFERENT, RIGHT?" and she saw me.
10:31 She was like, "Hey, Kev." And her eyes.
10:34 I just remember what I saw in the trailer.
10:37 I don't know if I like that trailer was too good.
10:42 Like, even though we know as a movie,
10:44 I think it's in the culture of a black person to just think that that's you.
10:49 Have you ever been to makeup?
10:50 Never been.
10:51 I've never been to makeup.
10:52 Me either.
10:54 Never.
10:54 You're too good to get up.
10:56 No.
10:56 I'm going tell you why I haven't been.
10:58 Like I've I've been invited, but
11:01 I don't think I'm at that level of fashion.
11:04 I don't I don't think No, I disagree.
11:06 I disagree.
11:08 No, I'm I'm not talking about the ability to dress.
11:10 I'm saying I don't think I'm at that level.
11:12 I don't want to be in a corner and somebody hits me was like sometimes
11:21 what are you talking about?
11:22 No.
11:23 No.
11:23 I get that.
11:23 Yeah.
11:24 Like having a hell of a year.
11:27 Who are you talking about?
11:30 What are you saying to me?
11:36 There's some intense fashion faces.
11:39 No, serious.
11:39 It's not a joke.
11:40 Yeah.
11:40 I just don't I don't know if I'm at that level for that conversation
11:43 cuz at some point at some point you're going to run into that group
11:46 and they're going to ask
11:47 Yeah.
11:47 And they're gonna ask you, "What do you think?"
11:51 And it's for me because I'm in that same situation.
11:54 And I always be like, "Hey man, look,
11:55 I just took a shower and wore what Jada left on the bed." Yeah.
12:01 Honestly.
12:02 Yeah.
12:03 That's the only reason why.
12:04 But I like I've seen a lot of my friends going.
12:06 I think they look amazing.
12:07 I love the themes behind it.
12:09 My fear is just like getting it wrong.
12:11 Like like going in a regular suit and they're like,
12:14 "WHAT THE WHAT IS KEVIN DOING?
12:17 HE'S GOT A BLACK SUIT.
12:18 STUPID.
12:20 STUPID." I ALWAYS I ALWAYS WANTED TO GO DO THE EMPEROR'S new clothes.
12:26 I wanted to go naked.
12:27 Yeah, you just go naked and pretend like you have something great on.
12:33 Yeah,
12:32 do that.
12:33 Yeah, that's a good idea.
12:35 That's a great idea.
12:36 That will really work out for you.
12:38 Let me know how Jada Let me know how Jada feels about.
12:46 Okay.
12:47 Kevin Hart.
12:47 He lends his vocal talents once again to The Secret Life of Pets 2.
12:52 Strange across the country on Friday the 24th of May.
12:54 So, uh, this is you.
12:55 You're back as Snowball Funny, but this time Snowball,
12:59 is he a superhero or does he believe he's a superhero?
13:01 Uh, well, for those who do not know,
13:02 Snowball is, uh, my character in Secret Life of Pets.
13:06 We had amazing success in part one.
13:10 I was a villain in part one,
13:11 and I I ended the movie on love, and I found a family.
13:15 And within this family, there's a little girl that loves to dress me up.
13:19 She dresses me up as a superhero.
13:21 And because of how gullible I am,
13:25 you know, I I start to believe it and I really
13:27 believe that I'm capable of living the life of a superhero.
13:31 And I get blessed with the opportunity to carry out a superhero lifestyle.
13:36 And it's a it's an adventurous time for me.
13:38 I don't do the things that I think I can do,
13:40 but um there's a there's a level of ambition that Snowball
13:43 has and drive that I think people will gravitate towards.
13:46 So, but also he does do a great I mean
13:49 capture Snowball that he does do something very good.
13:52 By by the way, I know there's a lot
13:54 of uh people with kids that that have seen the movie.
13:58 And the biggest thing for me is telling
14:00 these kids uh especially white kids that Snowball is black.
14:03 So if you can help, you can help.
14:07 You can just help by show your kid a picture.
14:12 It's the hardest thing for me to explain.
14:15 Uh doing the voice to kids is very uncomfortable for
14:18 No, it is.
14:19 No, I CAN IMAGINE THAT.
14:20 IMAGINE THAT.
14:21 IT IS, MAN.
14:21 LOOK AT ME, MAN.
14:25 That ain't no You You not snowball, man.
14:31 It's a very hard thing,
14:32 but it's a It's good because I love the progression of the character.
14:36 And for me, animation is a is such a great world
14:39 because it's one that I never expected to find success in.
14:42 And the fact that I'm at a part two and could
14:44 potentially go to three or whatever, uh, it's a high.
14:48 It's something else that you just you're adamant about making
14:52 succeed at the highest level.
14:53 What?
14:54 Now, you are both very competitive.
14:55 We know this, right?
14:57 And uh one of the things you both do online, oddly,
15:00 I don't think we've ever talked about this, but you both do it.
15:02 You post these kind of motivational uh
15:06 speeches online and they're short and punchy.
15:09 Just to give people an example,
15:10 this is uh will and they're always done like this.
15:15 Selfdisipline is the center of all material success.
15:18 What is your contribution to the human family?
15:21 It just other people's opinions is a really
15:25 way to determine how we feel about ourselves.
15:30 And that's all I'm going to say about them.
15:34 You now Kevin's are similar.
15:36 They're I would say slightly more aggressive.
15:38 Uh here's Kevin doing some wake up.
15:41 Wake your asses up.
15:43 Be a doer.
15:44 Let's get back to smiling.
15:45 Let's get back to loving.
15:46 Let's get back to being positive.
15:47 Don't do what they expect you to do.
15:48 Do the unexpected.
15:50 Very good.
15:52 So that's that's the idea, right?
15:58 So we had the idea.
15:59 We've asked the audience uh if there are any
16:01 kind of issues in their life that they need
16:03 motivation with something where you know their life is
16:06 stopping them and you guys can push them over.
16:09 Okay.
16:09 Okay.
16:09 Before we do it, can we exclude her brother?
16:14 Yes.
16:15 Yeah.
16:15 Just hang on.
16:16 Let me look.
16:16 No, there is No, he's not in it.
16:18 We're good.
16:18 We're good.
16:19 We're I mean, just for the safety of the audience.
16:21 Yeah.
16:21 Yeah.
16:21 Okay.
16:22 So, let's find out who we're going to first.
16:23 Is it uh Galia?
16:26 Galia.
16:26 All right.
16:27 Hello, Galia.
16:29 Tonight.
16:29 So, now you have a fear you want to help get over, right?
16:34 Yes.
16:34 Um, I'm scared of feet.
16:36 Okay.
16:37 But now, but I think But are you scared of your own feet?
16:40 Any feet.
16:41 My own, my friends.
16:42 Any like I don't want to look at them, see them, be touched by them.
16:45 Just
16:46 Okay.
16:46 Okay.
16:46 So, so Gala is is scared of all feet.
16:48 Scared of all feet.
16:50 Feet.
16:50 Okay.
16:50 So, I'm going to start with you, Will.
16:52 Okay.
16:53 So, the if you want to do it straight down the lens, it's number five there.
16:56 Okay.
16:56 So, Galia, scared of feet.
16:58 How can you get her over this fear?
17:00 Go.
17:01 Oh, this one's easy.
17:01 We going to fix this right now.
17:05 OH.
17:05 OH, NO.
17:06 OH, NO.
17:06 SHE'S NOT HERE.
17:07 THIS right now.
17:08 Okay.
17:08 Okay.
17:08 You just got to come down here and confront your fear.
17:17 She's horrified.
17:18 She's really scared.
17:21 Okay.
17:21 In a bizarre drug related incident, Graham Norton was arrested earlier.
17:26 Okay, that was your attempt.
17:27 Kevin Hart.
17:28 Kevin Hart, camera five.
17:29 Go.
17:29 Camera five.
17:30 Here we go.
17:31 Uh, what?
17:32 It's It's what?
17:32 What's your name again?
17:33 Feet.
17:33 Galia.
17:35 Galia.
17:37 Galia.
17:37 Galia.
17:37 Here's the best way to get you over your fear of feet.
17:40 You can't take steps in life without feet.
17:44 Your fear, your fear is prohibiting you from progression.
17:49 The minute that you can look at feet
17:50 and understand that feet are simply what move you forward,
17:54 you will put your fear behind.
17:59 YES.
18:01 YES.
18:01 There you go.
18:03 A fear of peace is a fear of life.
18:06 Like yours was like therapy and yours was like medication.
18:11 Okay, let's go.
18:12 Let's go to Jackson.
18:14 Where's Jackson?
18:15 Now Jackson's is almost real.
18:18 Uh so Jackson, you need motivation because
18:22 uh I'm lactose intolerant, but I can't help myself.
18:24 I keep um eating dairy.
18:27 And I mean, how good is it?
18:29 You can't you can't just give it up.
18:31 So No, you can't.
18:32 Okay.
18:32 So, but you want to stop you want to stop
18:34 eating dairy because it's bad for you, but you can't.
18:37 Yeah, look, there's plenty of alternatives out there,
18:39 but let's be honest, they don't taste as good.
18:40 So, how lactose intolerant are you?
18:43 What happens?
18:44 Well, um, basically, after I ate it, I'm the not so fresh prince of ballet.
18:50 Yes.
18:52 Yeah.
18:52 Well, this one this one seems Okay.
18:54 Well, there you go.
18:55 Easy.
18:55 Um, you know, at some point you have to think about other people, you know.
19:09 you know, uh, if the if the lactose doesn't agree with you,
19:12 it's not going to agree with others.
19:16 And just at the heart of it, if if you love anybody,
19:20 if you love anybody, especially those that are near you,
19:24 um just put the ice cream down because we
19:29 we we are not inclined to enjoy your funky ass.
19:37 Okay, that seemed that was very good.
19:40 KEVIN, HERE WE GO.
19:41 SO, I'm going to I'm going to take a different approach.
19:43 Okay.
19:43 Okay.
19:44 I'm going to I'm going to go the opposite the opposite route.
19:47 Here's my thing.
19:48 So many people want to change.
19:50 So many people want to do what you're supposed to do.
19:53 Everybody that's lactose intolerant says, "You know what?
19:54 I'm lactose intolerant and I can't." Here's my feeling.
19:57 You get one life and if you want to blow your ass for the rest of your life,
20:04 David, you should do it.
20:06 Do it to the best of your ability because you get one life.
20:10 WHEN IT'S ALL SAID AND DONE, go out saying, "I drank milk cuz I loved it."
20:22 Very good.
20:23 He won't take advice.
20:25 And if Justin drinks that milk, he going to need some sage advice.
20:30 Drinking that milk needs some sage advice for sure.
20:33 Ha!
