Your Old Projector Was a Waste Of Money - XGIMI Titan Noir Max

Your Old Projector Was a Waste Of Money - XGIMI Titan Noir Max

ShortCircuit

0:00 I'm not really sure what it is that XJimmy thinks that they're doing here.

0:04 On the one hand, I definitely admire the hustle.

0:07 Who wouldn't want a better projector for less money?

0:09 But on the other hand, at the rate they're going,

0:11 they're going to be making the best projector in the world for $5.

0:15 Just a couple months ago, we looked at their Horizon 20 Max,

0:18 which I joked would make rich people angry because

0:20 of how much more they spent on their fancy projectors.

0:24 And now here we are with a sponsored video on their Titan Noir Max,

0:30 which looks even better.

0:32 At an early bird price of just $3,000,

0:36 the topsp spec unit in this lineup has it all.

0:39 5,000 lmmens of realworld movie watching brightness up

0:43 to a 6,000 to1 realworld native contrast ratio.

0:47 That's actually at 2,000 lumen.

0:49 So that would be very suitable for a light

0:50 controlled room and a great HDR experience.

0:54 HDR10 plus and Dolby Vision.

0:56 It's also IMAX enhanced.

0:57 We're even getting the same lens shift feature that I raved about

1:00 last time that gives us the ability to move the image up,

1:03 down, left, and right without any keystone or distortion.

1:07 And even better this time,

1:08 we're getting a dual iris for super fine control over contrast.

1:14 Actually looks better, too.

1:15 Like dang, XJim's learning.

1:17 The lens setup allows you to switch instantly between

1:19 a 16x9 aspect ratio and a cinemascope aspect ratio.

1:23 And I guess I haven't even mentioned yet,

1:24 it'll do 4K 60 Hz or up to 240 Hz 1080p.

1:29 If you're more into the gaming side of things,

1:31 you can expect a little bit of rainbow

1:33 effect because it is a triple chip laser projector,

1:36 but they claim that they have some reduction built in.

1:38 So, I'll be interested to see how that works out a little bit later.

1:41 As for IO, we've got three HDMIs in, including support for EER,

1:46 a couple USBs, one of which is running at 3.0 speeds, a gigabit LAN port.

1:50 They made a point of highlighting

1:52 that, and that is important if you happen to use,

1:54 uh, sorry, excuse me, uh, Plex for your legitimate,

1:58 sorry, uh, Blu-rays that you've definitely ripped.

2:01 For instance, optical audio as well as really DC power.

2:05 Huh.

2:05 And a three and a half millimeter jack.

2:07 Woah, THAT'S A LOT OF cooling on the bottom

2:09 for something that's powered by a barrel jack.

2:11 Look at that.

2:11 I guess they're aiming to make it really quiet.

2:13 I do see one 80 mm fan in there, though.

2:15 Power that up in a second.

2:16 First, I want to take a look at what else is in the box.

2:19 Normally, I don't care that much about packaging.

2:21 I mean, you're just going to throw it away, but like that's pretty cool.

2:24 Really clean remote.

2:25 Good job.

2:26 No Netflix button.

2:27 Instead, you just get programmable shortcut buttons,

2:29 so you decide if you want a Netflix button.

2:32 XJimmy is leveling up so big time, dude.

2:36 So, I mean, I even said this in the last video.

2:38 They've gone from like little brother projector brand to like, oh, oh, damn.

2:43 Like, wow.

2:44 Okay.

2:44 Backlick remote.

2:46 You love to see it.

2:48 And not much else.

2:50 Not that I really need anything else.

2:52 I get a big chunky power brick.

2:55 360 watts.

2:58 You know, when we started calling these power bricks,

3:00 I don't think the intention was for them ever to be actually

3:02 like something you could build a doicile out of, but we got there.

3:07 Good.

3:07 Good job, everyone.

3:08 Enough about that.

3:09 Let's fire it up.

3:10 Now, we can just plug in our Nvidia Shield.

3:12 Actually, no, let's not do that just yet because one of the big

3:16 highlights for XJimmy on this one is that they're not using Android anymore.

3:21 They are still using the Android open source project AOSP,

3:25 but they've made some customizations to it that they

3:28 say allows them to give customers more control of just,

3:31 you know, sideloading any kinds of apps they want onto it,

3:34 as well as better optimization for the software itself.

3:37 So, it's a bold move, Cotton.

3:39 Let's see how it works out for them.

3:40 Okay, let's start with image correction.

3:44 That was painless.

3:45 We can make some fine adjustments with the little screw style feet.

3:49 Okay, that was about 3 minutes and we are like pretty darn close.

3:56 Perfect.

3:57 No, but unless you want to spend a very long time or you're a professional,

4:01 you're always going to be doing a little bit of keystone.

4:04 Oh, right.

4:04 Right.

4:05 Laser.

4:05 So, when it detects someone in front of it, it turns off.

4:08 For those wondering, by the way, does it have to be this close to the screen?

4:11 The answer is no.

4:12 It totally supports mounting it up high or if

4:14 you wanted to mount it behind your projector screen.

4:16 We actually have it at maximum zoom right now.

4:18 Man, there's so much like adaptive stuff.

4:21 Automatic keystone, automatic wall color adaptation,

4:24 automatic focus, like everything.

4:26 I'll try out dynamic iris.

4:28 I don't know if I'm going to like that, but I mean,

4:30 hey, that's one of the key features.

4:31 So, let's give it a shot.

4:33 I don't need to adapt to ambient light.

4:34 We've got full light control in this room.

4:36 Picture mode.

4:37 Filmmaker mode.

4:38 Thank you.

4:39 I do notice a little bit of rainbow effect,

4:41 especially as I'm moving around in a white-on gray menu.

4:45 We'll have to see how it looks in content, though.

4:47 Oh, the anti- rainbow effect thing wasn't on.

4:50 Oh, dude, that like is immediately better.

4:52 Why don't they have that on by default?

4:53 What's the downside?

4:54 W.

4:55 It's way better.

4:56 Can you guys see that?

4:57 Maybe there's like a terrible downside, but I would turn it on so far.

5:02 All right, home.

5:03 Here we go.

5:03 Wait.

5:04 Oh, I guess there's just like no home screen.

5:08 It's not a smart device.

5:09 So, they're running AOSP just for like the operating system of it,

5:14 but no extra clunky stuff.

5:16 Okay, so we will need our Nvidia Shield, huh, that's super cool.

5:21 All right, HDMI 1.

5:23 And boop.

5:24 Time to kick off the lights and see how she looks.

5:26 Wow, not bad.

5:30 It is pretty incredible how much image you

5:33 can get out of a tabletop projector these days.

5:36 To be clear, the resolution and the brightness and even for that matter,

5:41 the overall picture quality might not be like an enormous leap

5:44 over what's been available in this type of form factor before,

5:47 but like I said last time around, the inclusion of lens shift.

5:51 Not to mention now this like super responsive,

5:54 granular menu makes it actually usable.

5:59 Okay, I do want to see a piece of I haven't watched this since it came out,

6:02 so I do want to see a piece of content

6:03 that I have a little bit more familiarity with.

6:05 I want something that like really pops in HDR.

6:08 It doesn't have the poppiest HDR I've ever seen, even on a projector.

6:13 Screen size, uh, I think we're more like 120.

6:18 Oh, interesting.

6:20 So, they have a brightness slider elsewhere in the menu,

6:24 but separately they have this screen size adjuster that, as you can see,

6:31 will boost the brightness,

6:33 but actually doesn't seem to be screwing with color too much.

6:38 Little bit.

6:39 Yes, definitely.

6:40 It's it's definitely juicing it a bit.

6:42 But I would say that if you like a more vibrant image,

6:46 boosting this a couple tens of inches over

6:50 what your screen size actually is is going

6:52 to yield an image that you will like a lot more even than a vivid mode.

6:56 That's that's cool.

6:58 Screen gain.

7:00 So I can play around with how much gain my screen has as well.

7:03 This is terrific.

7:05 XJimmy sponsored video or not got some feedback.

7:09 This should not be hidden in the Dolby

7:12 Vision settings in the picture mode, please.

7:14 No.

7:15 Wow.

7:16 Now it looks great.

7:17 See, I was sitting here going like, "Yeah,

7:19 it doesn't look that much better." Blah blah blah blah blah blah.

7:21 Cuz I'm I'm not going to tell you guys

7:22 something I don't believe whether it's sponsored or not.

7:24 But like now, damn, that looks awesome.

7:27 It just needed that little bit more pop.

7:29 Now, you're still not going to get that kind of crazy, you know,

7:34 specular highlight that you might get on something like a, you know,

7:37 a miniLEDD TV or an OLED or something like that.

7:40 But you're never going to get that projector look,

7:44 that sort of uh cinematic almost softness.

7:46 I don't want to call it a softness, right?

7:48 It's a four 4K display and it's it's quite sharp,

7:51 but it does look a little bit different and you'll never get that on a TV.

7:55 So, it comes down to whether you want that more cinema

7:58 look or whether you want really bright TV that can do,

8:03 you know, pinpoints of light.

8:05 This like solved it for me.

8:07 I'm so glad we found that.

8:08 You know, I was worried that the dynamic iris would be a huge problem

8:12 in a scene like this where we're kind

8:14 of going between near total darkness to like,

8:18 you know, flaring lights in the sky.

8:21 But I was not noticing the iris transitions.

8:25 That's um pretty smooth.

8:27 I did notice a little bit of noise in like sort

8:30 of very dark sections that it was not um handling perfectly,

8:34 but I it's the kind of thing that if

8:38 you're not like a nerd who's looking for it,

8:40 I don't think most people would ever notice.

8:42 I guess I should turn the speakers on.

8:43 Normally, I would never ever in a thousand years

8:46 recommend using the speakers on a device like this.

8:49 Whether you paid, you know,

8:50 the $3,000 early bird price or the $6,000 like full retail price,

8:55 get speakers like it deserves it.

8:58 Um, but we might as well turn them on.

9:00 You're in trouble and you need my tree.

9:03 Yes.

9:03 Yes, we do.

9:04 Yeah, the speakers are usable, but what I said before stands.

9:07 Yeah, now that I've got it dialed in, it's uh quite solid.

9:11 was part of the setup wizard.

9:13 Did I miss that part where it like asked me how big my screen was and stuff?

9:16 No.

9:17 Okay, that's something I'd like to see XJimmy improve as well

9:19 then is make sure that that's part of the initial setup wizard.

9:22 Other than that, man, all the things that you need are in the menu

9:26 and it's pretty easy to figure out other than that screenish thing.

9:29 If you guys want to check this thing out,

9:31 it's going to be linked in the video description.

9:33 Obviously, there's an early access price and then there will

9:35 be a higher retail price down the road or you know, hey, down the road though.

9:40 The way XJimmy's going, there might be an even better projector.

9:43 These guys have just been killing it lately.

9:45 Thanks to XJimmy for sending this over and sponsoring this video.

9:48 And thanks to you for watching.
