Scott MacArthur Offended Kate Hudson by Going Sockless, Reacts to His Jamba Juice Headshots

Late Night with Seth Meyers

0:01 -Our next guest is a very talented actor

0:02 you know from shows like "The Mick,"

0:03 "The Righteous Gemstones," and "Rooster."

0:05 He stars in "Running Point."

0:07 The second season is streaming April 23rd on Netflix.

0:09 Let's take a look.

0:11 -I'll tell the producers that we can't shoot here anymore.

0:13 Sighs] Thank you.

0:13 Thank you.

0:14 Knock on door] -Yo!

0:16 Driving through the old hood!

0:19 Figured I'd just pop in.

0:20 -You live 45 minutes away.

0:21 -Ah.

0:22 Not a thing.

0:23 How my two favorite queens doing, huh?

0:24 Should we make some mojitos, have a kiki?

0:26 -Are you wearing makeup?

0:27 -Ah!

0:28 Charlie!

0:28 My dive.

0:28 Have a kiki?

0:29 -Stop saying "kiki." Okay?

0:32 There's no cameras here.

0:33 -Are you serious?

0:35 I went through full glam for this!

0:37 It's like 400 bucks!

0:38 -Oh, my God.

0:39 -I gotta go.

0:40 -They did a terrible job.

0:41 Are your kids in the car?

0:42 -It's fine!

0:43 They have their tablets!

0:44 -Oh, my God.

0:45 -Please welcome to the show Scott MacArthur, everybody!

0:49 Cheers and applause]♪♪♪♪ I'm so happy you're here.

1:06 -Well, thank you for having me.

1:08 -We have known each other for a very long time.

1:10 My brother and your brother were roommates

1:12 in Los Angeles at a bad house.

1:17 -It was a bad— It was a good comedy house.

1:20 -It was a good comedy house.

1:21 It was very funny people.

1:22 Lot of wonderful times were had there.

1:24 I remember once saying about it...

1:26 it was one of the few pla—

1:27 They couldn't get rid of the rats

1:29 because the rats' names were on the lease.

1:31 -That's true.

1:31 -That's what it felt like.

1:32 -The rats paid the rent.

1:33 The rats did the grocery shopping.

1:35 -So we know a lot of the same people,

1:37 um, and yet I feel like we kind of missed each other.

1:40 Like, right when I was sort of moving out here full-time,

1:43 that was when you were moving from Chicago to LA.

1:46 -Yeah, I— We missed each other by a couple months.

1:49 I think you came to New York to do "SNL."

1:51 -Yep.

1:51 -And then I moved in.

1:53 I always thought of myself as Seth 2.0.

1:57 -Oh, interesting.

1:57 -Yeah.

1:58 -Yeah.

1:58 Okay.

1:59 -Yeah.

1:59 But kind of like, um— like the "Terminator 2,"

2:02 but the technology went backwards.

2:04 -Oh, I see.

2:05 -Yeah.

2:05 -So more like Seth 0.2.

2:08 -0.2.

2:09 I'm not a numbers guy, Seth.

2:10 So, you know...

2:11 Um, yeah, it's like I came out of the machine,

2:13 and it was like, "Hey, guys, I'm your new roommate."

2:16 And they were like, "Oh, Jesus." Yeah.

2:18 -Do you remember the first time we met?

2:20 -I do.

2:21 I do.

2:21 I was living in the bad house.

2:24 -Yeah.

2:25 -And, uh, you came to town,

2:27 and, uh, all you guys were going out to dinner

2:29 at a restaurant called Genghis Cohen.

2:31 -Yeah, a very, very wonderful Chinese restaurant.

2:34 -Unbelievable.

2:35 It was around the corner from the house.

2:37 And, uh, I remember— What I specifically remember

2:39 that meal is it was you, it was my brother Hayes,

2:43 uh, your brother Josh,

2:44 Ike Barinholtz, Dave Stassen, and...

2:47 I just remember you guys were so quick,

2:51 and it was just...

2:52 pup-pup-pup-pup-pup.

2:52 And I just sat there silently, which is rare.

2:56 And, uh, I remember thinking in the middle of the meal,

2:58 like, looking around the restaurant, and just thinking,

3:01 "I can't keep up with these guys,

3:02 but maybe I can work here."

3:04 -Oh.

3:05 -Yeah.

3:06 You almost— You almost applied to be a busboy at Genghis Cohen.

3:09 -I might have filled out the application.

3:10 -Yeah, yeah, there you go.

3:11 -Yeah.

3:12 -It's worked out very well.

3:13 Um, and, again, I'm very lucky to know your family.

3:16 I was at your brother's wedding.

3:18 You were the best man.

3:19 Ike Barinholtz spoke at the rehearsal dinner.

3:22 Incredibly funny guy.

3:23 -Unbelievable.

3:24 Super funny.

3:24 Crushed the toast.

3:25 Brought the house down.

3:27 And I knew that he knew he did

3:29 because instead of handing the microphone back to me...

3:32 He crushed it.

3:33 he shook his head twice,

3:35 and he just flipped the microphone over his shoulder.

3:38 It hit me in the chest.

3:40 And then I had to sit there, and I was like, "Thank you, Ike."

3:43 Um, yeah, that was— that was a crazy weekend.

3:46 -It was a crazy weekend.

3:47 It was a great weekend.

3:48 Uh, it;s really funny because, of course,

3:50 Ike's brother Jonny also came out.

3:52 Uh, you know, he's an accomplished actor.

3:54 I remember you came out.

3:55 And it's funny when, like,

3:56 younger siblings come out to LA because, you know,

3:59 you're like, "Alright, great.

4:00 They're going to try, too."

4:01 And it's been amazing how successful you've all been.

4:04 But the early days are not success-filled.

4:06 Can you talk about your headshots,

4:08 your first headshots in LA?

4:10 -Uh, yes.

4:11 It's funny that— Uh, yeah.

4:14 So, when I got out there, um...

4:18 Look, there's a— there's a couple words

4:20 you don't want to ever hear from somebody.

4:22 And they are, "Hey, I got a guy who owes me a favor."

4:25 Right?

4:25 -Oh, yeah.

4:26 Yeah.

4:26 That doesn't scream they're skilled.

4:28 -No.

4:29 No.

4:30 So I was with my manager, who I'm still with today.

4:33 And Brady said to me— He said,

4:36 "Hey, I got a guy who owes me a favor,

4:37 and, uh, you know, he's going to take your headshots for free."

4:40 -Great.

4:40 -I said, "Great." -These are not cheap, headshots.

4:43 -Oh, my God.

4:44 It was like a couple hundred bucks.

4:45 And then you have to have them printed.

4:46 It was before the computer.

4:48 It was, you know...

4:50 Laughter] -Someone would have to etch it into stone.

4:53 -Yeah, yeah.

4:54 -You'd have to bring all the stones with you.

4:56 -Yeah, yeah, yeah.

4:57 If your smile was off, they'd, like, Joker your smile like...

5:00 Yeah.

5:00 But, uh...

5:01 So I called the guy, and he said,

5:02 "Oh, yeah, man.

5:03 I'll take your shots."

5:04 Um, he's like, "Let's meet at Jamba Juice

5:06 tomorrow morning at 9 a.m."

5:07 And I said, "Great." -Yeah.

5:09 -So I remember I was driving my brother's car.

5:11 I still hadn't had a car.

5:13 And, uh— And I was thinking.

5:15 I was like, "Why are we meeting at Jamba Juice?

5:17 This is weird." -...meet at a coffee place.

5:19 Yeah.

5:19 But Jamba Juice.

5:20 -I was like, "Well, he's a juice guy."

5:22 And we get there.

5:23 He's got his camera out, and I walk in.

5:26 He's like, "Hey.

5:27 Perfect." He's like, "So, first thing I'm gonna do,

5:30 I'm gonna shoot you in front of this blue wall,

5:31 and then I'm gonna shoot you in front of this yellow wall."

5:33 And I'm like, "What— Are we doing the shots here?"

5:36 And he goes, "I like the walls.

5:38 You know, the walls are all different."

5:39 I said, "Oh.

5:40 Okay." And he looks at me and he goes,

5:43 "I want you to wear a red shirt."

5:45 And I said, "Well, I don't have a red shirt."

5:47 I probably had like one shirt with me.

5:49 And he goes, "Here.

5:50 Do this." And he just pops off his red T-shirt and...

5:52 -Was this an operational Jamba Juice?

5:55 Are, like, people there for juice?

5:57 -Oh, yeah.

5:57 Yeah.

5:58 -Okay.

5:58 -I could tell because everybody was waiting

6:00 in line for their juices looking at me like,

6:02 "This poor bastard." You know?

6:05 And, uh, so I pop on his red T-shirt,

6:08 and we proceed to shoot

6:11 for an uncomfortably long period of time, maybe three hours.

6:14 -Now, I will say.

6:16 Now I know this is a Jamba Juice,

6:18 if I would have seen that, I'm like,

6:19 "That's good.

6:19 I like that."[ Laughter]

6:22 They do have different...

6:24 Cheers and applause] -Yeah.

6:26 -This is my favorite.

6:27 I mean...

6:28 -Yeah.

6:28 Well...

6:29 this was very creative.

6:31 If you can see, that's actually a corner

6:34 where the yellow wall and the green wall meet.

6:36 And I believe the direction on this one

6:39 was, "Give me that big smile." -Yeah.

6:41 And then you got a lot of work

6:43 but almost exclusively in Jamba Juice commercials.

6:45 -Yes.

6:46 Yeah.

6:46 -Yeah.

6:47 -You know, I'm really hoping I get a gift card

6:50 from Jamba Juice after this.

6:51 -I would hope so.

6:52 -Yes.

6:52 -This is great.

6:53 I mean, although they're probably like,

6:54 "Oh, [bleep].

6:55 Everybody's gonna come to take headshots here now."[ Laughter]

6:59 -Yeah.

7:00 -Congrats on "Running Point."

7:01 This is a show about a fictional LA basketball team

7:05 and the siblings who are sort of running the team.

7:07 Uh, you, Kate Hudson, others.

7:10 Um, do you have a sibling vibe on set?

7:14 -Right away.

7:14 -Yeah.

7:14 Really?

7:15 From the jump?

7:16 -Right away.

7:16 Well, first I got the call from Ike and Dave.

7:19 And they said, "Hey, we're making this show with Mindy,

7:22 and we want to know if you want to play Kate Hudson's brother."

7:26 -Yeah.

7:27 -And I was like, "Eh..."

7:30 You know, it was like "Major League."

7:31 "I got a guy on the other line for some drywall."

7:34 -Yeah!

7:35 -I was like, "Yeah, yeah.

7:36 Of course, of course."

7:37 So, you know, we go through the process

7:39 and we do the table read and everything.

7:40 And the first day— I knew it was going to work right away

7:44 in terms of— Well, hopefully it works.

7:46 But I knew it had a chance right away when I got to set.

7:51 And, you know, you get nerves.

7:53 You know, it's like I always tell my kids.

7:56 It's like going to school for the first day at a new school.

7:59 You don't know who you're gonna sit with and you don't know,

8:01 you know, who you're going to connect with.

8:02 And, you know— And just I always tell them.

8:04 I just smile and be kind and be present.

8:06 And so I'm doing that,

8:08 a,nd I look across the set and I see Kate.

8:11 And Kate's in her chair, and she's like this.

8:14 And she's just, like, really honed in on me.

8:17 And I go— You know— I'm like, "Okay."

8:19 So I walk over and I say, "Hey, is everything okay?"

8:23 And she goes...

8:25 "Hm.

8:26 You know what I think?

8:29 I think your face

8:31 is too big for your head."[ Laughter]

8:35 And I was like, "Oh!"

8:37 And she's like, "Scott, you know what I mean."

8:39 And I was like, "Yeah.

8:41 It's like when you're a kid and you're cold

8:42 and your dad gives you his sport coat

8:44 and it's, like, hanging off."

8:46 And she's like, "Yes!"

8:48 And then right as that's happening,

8:49 over my shoulder, I hear Ike go,

8:51 "If you think his face is weird, wait till you see his body."

8:54 I'm like, "What?" She's like, "Do you have a weird body?"

8:57 I'm like, "Yeah.

8:58 I got a weird body."

9:00 -So Kate took fashion issue.

9:03 You did a Q&A about the show.

9:05 These are lovely.

9:06 People come, ask questions.

9:07 And...alright.

9:09 So this is how you were dressed.

9:11 Audience gasps] -Um, no socks.

9:13 I mean, this is a real...

9:15 -Not the response I was going for.

9:16 I'm not gonna lie.

9:18 -So she noticed because it was obviously really clear

9:22 that you weren't wearing socks.

9:24 What was her advice to you

9:25 when she saw you weren't wearing socks?

9:27 -She told me to go home.

9:29 Laughter] Right before the lights went down and the screening started.

9:33 It was a beautiful theater.

9:34 The Egyptian Theatre.

9:35 Historic place in Los Angeles.

9:37 She just— She looked across the aisle.

9:38 I was sitting like this, as you do.

9:40 My kids were there.

9:41 First time they've ever come

9:42 to a premiere with me.

9:43 My wife.

9:43 And she goes— She leans over and she goes,

9:46 "Scotty!

9:47 Scotty!" And I just looked, and she went, "No socks?!"

9:50 And I went, "Oh.

9:51 Yeah." I literally actually just forgot to wear socks.

9:53 You know?

9:54 I thought I had blue ones.

9:55 I didn't.

9:55 So I was like, "Forget it.

9:57 I won't wear socks."

9:57 And then she goes, "Kate!

9:58 Kate!" My wife's also named Kate.

9:59 My wife leans forward.

10:01 She goes, "What?" And she goes,

10:02 "How could you let him leave the house like that?!"

10:04 And Kate's like, "I..." And then she goes, "Go home."

10:09 I was like, "What?" And she's like, "Go home now!"

10:12 So when we did the Q&A,

10:14 uh, I had to own the situation.

10:18 -Yeah.

10:18 -So I, you know—

10:19 I went up, and I really— I really leaned into it.

10:22 -Yeah, I think that— By the way,

10:24 I think owning it like this is better.

10:25 Now it looks like a choice, not a guy who forgot socks.

10:28 -Yeah.

10:28 -I think that's very smart.

10:30 This is a very good way to play it.

10:31 -Yeah, and that shirt, I've had for 20 years.

10:34 And on the way over, I thought it would look cool

10:36 if I popped the collar.

10:37 It does not.

10:38 I know that now.

10:39 -Yeah.

10:40 -Um...

10:41 -Yeah, my mom's gonna have a lot of notes about this segment.

10:43 -That's great.

10:44 Well, I'm a big fan of hers, as well.

10:45 So I look forward to what her feedback is.

10:48 When your brother Hayes was here,

10:50 we talked about how he played football at Bowdoin.

10:53 -Yeah.

10:54 -And he had a granular knowledge of his stats, even today.

10:57 -He was a legend.

10:58 -He was a legend.

10:59 -Yeah.

10:59 -You, uh— You played a little lacrosse.

11:01 You played a little hockey in college.

11:03 -I did.

11:03 I played on both teams.

11:05 -Was this a— Are the genetics consistent?

11:07 Were you a legend?

11:09 -Well, I didn't keep my stats.

11:11 -Okay.

11:11 You didn't keep you stats.

11:13 -No.

11:13 He kept his stats.

11:15 All-time touchdown leader.

11:16 And you know, every other category

11:18 you can think of as a quarterback.

11:20 I didn't keep my stats 'cause I didn't actually play, so...

11:22 -But you were on two teams.

11:24 -I was on two teams.

11:25 I was the backup goalie on both teams.

11:27 -And you never— A backup goalie usually gets in.

11:30 You never got in a game in all your time in college?

11:32 -Backup goalies get in.

11:34 I was the back...up.

11:35 -Oh.

11:36 I see, I see.

11:37 -Yeah.

11:37 -There was a second-string goalie.

11:39 -Yeah.

11:39 -And then there was a backup goalie.

11:40 -Yeah, I think I was what they might call a way backup.

11:43 -Okay.

11:43 Gotcha.

11:44 -No, I did get in.

11:46 I played in a preseason game.

11:48 I think it was my sophomore year.

11:49 Um, you know, you get the nod.

11:52 You're so excited.

11:53 And, uh, I took a ball—

11:56 Uh, you know, a lacrosse ball is quite hard.

11:58 -Yeah.

11:58 They're no joke.

11:59 -It's vulcanized rubber.

12:01 And, um, I took a ball off the throat...

12:05 Audience groans] -...uh, about...

12:06 Yeah.

12:06 Yeah.

12:07 Thank you.

12:07 That's the response.

12:08 See?

12:08 I knew at some point

12:10 we would get to understand each other.

12:12 Uh, no.

12:12 I took it off the throat.

12:14 Um, I collapsed.

12:15 Uh, you know, it hurt.

12:18 Uh, and all I remember when I was on the turf

12:20 and my esophagus was, you know, smashed into my spine...

12:25 I just remember hearing my coach from the sideline go,

12:28 "Well, I didn't ask him to be a goalie."

12:31 Um, and, you know, at that moment,

12:34 I kind of like Rocky Balboa'd it.

12:36 I slowly got up.

12:37 I'm like, "I'm okay, I'm okay."

12:38 And as I was saying to, you know,

12:40 my defensemen and, you know— Because the guys care.

12:42 You know, they're like, "Scotty, are you okay?"

12:43 I'm like, "I'm fine.

12:44 I'm fine." They're like, "Oh, he's fine."

12:45 Because I already sounded like this,

12:47 so there was no way that they could know that I was not fine.

12:51 -Yeah.

12:52 That's right.

12:52 Yeah.

12:53 You got the right voice for lacrosse.

12:54 -Yeah.

12:55 -Thanks for being here, buddy.

12:56 Congrats on "Running Point." -Awesome, man.

12:57 Thank you.

12:58 -You guys, Scotty MacArthur!
