LMGClips

0:00 What's up?

0:00 Welcome to the WAN Show.

0:03 Yo.

0:03 [laughter] We got a great show lined up for you guys this week.

0:09 [laughter]

0:08 That was my pathetic attempt at something we're going

0:11 to show you a much better version of later on.

0:15 We actually had one of our fellow tech

0:17 creators do a rap about LTT Store products,

0:21 which is flipping amazing.

0:23 We're going to be checking that out.

0:24 Better than that.

0:25 Also, speaking of LTT Store products, SHIP STORM IS BACK!

0:32 [screaming] THAT'S RIGHT.

0:31 FREE SHIPPING OVER $150 on the US store or $225 on the worldwide store.

0:40 Free shipping for your entire order.

0:41 No core No code needed.

0:43 Just load everything up into your core cart and you are good to go.

0:47 Also, if you are a Floatplane supporter plus, you get even lower thresholds.

0:53 $100 in the US and $175 Canadian dollars on the global store.

0:58 We've got also some sweet deals to help you reach these thresholds.

1:02 We have a buy more, save more on blank tees,

1:04 a screwdriver pen and pencil for only $19.99.

1:06 We've also got a free tech sack when you buy a commuter backpack.

1:09 That's on the US side only.

1:11 And a free tech sack when you buy an LTT OG backpack.

1:14 US side only.

1:15 Ship Storm runs from April 24th to May 7th.

1:17 So, don't wait for the storm to pass.

1:19 Oh, no.

1:20 Uh what else we got this week?

1:21 We got to actually have so many cool topics.

1:23 Good news WAN Show.

1:24 This is going to be the best good

1:25 news WAN Show yet because everything's freaking awesome.

1:28 The EU requires phone makers to fit

1:31 readily removable batteries for from from next year.

1:35 Uh but there may be a notable exception.

1:38 Mhm.

1:38 Mhm.

1:39 Mhm.

1:39 We'll see what that is.

1:40 Also, YouTube opens up AI deepfake detection tool to all of Hollywood.

1:45 I knew Wait.

1:46 Oh, that one.

1:47 I thought you were going to pick the other one.

1:48 I thought you were going to pick the like local Gemini one.

1:51 Because that was more proof that Luke was right.

1:54 Oh, yeah.

1:56 crazy.

1:56 That one's crazy.

1:57 Okay, we're going to AI topics.

1:58 People

1:59 Yeah, we'll talk about it.

2:00 It's pretty cool though.

2:02 Yes.

2:22 The show is brought to you today by Vessi,

2:24 along with Squarespace [music] and Shox and Tello.

2:27 With our wrap partner Dbrand, our laptop partner Razer,

2:29 and our chair partner All right,

2:33 let's jump right into our headline topic, which is of course Oh man,

2:37 it wasn't even one of the ones we highlighted.

2:39 There's so many good ones.

2:40 Yeah, that's funny, isn't it?

2:42 Framework CEO and absolute bro, Nirav Patel, tweeted earlier this week that um

2:51 Oh, that topic.

2:52 Okay.

2:52 Yeah, that topic.

2:54 Tweeted earlier this week that the Framework 13 Pro launch,

2:58 investment disclosure, has been an overwhelming success.

3:04 Nice.

3:02 Batch seven, which is shipping in July, is sold out already.

3:09 Wow.

3:08 Yeah, people are really vibing with the better chassis,

3:12 the new better touchscreen display that has just Did you watch the video?

3:16 Yes, it looks great.

3:19 Phenomenal.

3:18 Phenomenal.

3:19 Like direct sunlight performance.

3:22 just walk outside and test it?

3:23 It was cool.

3:24 I've never seen anything quite I haven't seen anything quite like it.

3:27 I've seen those like retroreflective displays that are quite like it,

3:31 but I've never seen one with a backlight Right.

3:33 that's quite like that.

3:34 Very, very cool.

3:35 Better battery life, freaking Panther Lake.

3:38 This thing is resonating with people,

3:39 but that is not what I'm excited about right now.

3:42 What I'm excited about right now is the fact that Nirav posted

3:47 that over 50% of their sales of the Framework 13 Pro are report

3:58 Ubuntu

4:00 Yeah.

4:00 not Windows.

4:02 Yeah.

4:02 Now, we have talked extensively on the WAN

4:04 Show about the year of the Linux desktop.

4:08 We have even talked like like personally between you and me about

4:12 a video that I was working on called the year of Windows humiliation.

4:17 Because even if it's not the year of the Linux desktop,

4:20 I I think there's an argument to be

4:22 made that it is the year of Windows humiliation.

4:24 That video actually goes live sometime this weekend.

4:27 And I had to go do a quick voice pick up

4:30 when I saw this tweet and be like I don't know, editor.

4:33 Put this somewhere, but like [laughter] This is crazy.

4:38 However, however

4:39 just a screenshot of the tweet and you going and no no other context.

4:43 [laughter]

4:44 I wish it was now.

4:45 Sorry, I keep going.

4:45 Now, I completely wish it was.

4:46 However, there is a bit of a catch.

4:50 And Luke, do you want to be the one to give the bad news?

4:54 honestly, as as much as I would love this to be true, and you know, maybe it is.

5:00 And you know, I I'm not saying it's not true.

5:02 I do think that that many people are ordering

5:05 Ubuntu configurations for these laptops and not Windows ones.

5:10 I am not personally convinced that those people are going to keep Linux,

5:15 I'll say, not even just Ubuntu, but Linux on their laptops.

5:18 I I suspect people are doing this so that they

5:20 can not pay for Windows and then they can install Windows

5:26 and then just through the command line tell it that it

5:28 should totally just activate itself and then go on their merry way.

5:33 Um donning donning the hat.

5:35 It's possible, it's possible, you say.

5:37 think over 50% of Framework sales are people who are going to long-term Linux.

5:42 I think they should give it a shot cuz

5:46 I've been doing that and it's actually been awesome.

5:48 Okay.

5:48 Okay, hold on.

5:49 Hold on.

5:50 Think about this.

5:50 Think about this.

5:52 The last thing you just said was what?

5:55 It's been awesome.

5:56 Okay.

5:56 Okay.

5:56 Now, now, think back to the second last thing you said.

6:00 I've been doing a shot.

6:02 Yeah, okay.

6:02 Okay.

6:03 The third last thing that

6:05 No, no, we're not going to go any farther than that.

6:06 You wouldn't have a shot.

6:07 You would have no [laughter] chance.

6:08 Neither would I.

6:10 Do you think that there could be

6:12 a significant number of people who ordered this machine?

6:18 Oh.

6:18 And just get a taste, and they're just like, "Huh.

6:24 You know what?

6:25 Water's warm.

6:28 Where are all those penguins in it?

6:31 [laughter] You know what I'm saying?

6:31 Aren't they usually in cold water?

6:33 Yeah.

6:33 Wait, not always, it turns out.

6:34 No, yeah, I know, I know.

6:35 I'm Which which is great to which is great to know.

6:38 Because then if you don't like the cold water,

6:39 that doesn't mean you can't join them.

6:41 Yeah.

6:42 Yeah.

6:42 Just join the penguins.

6:44 So, I I mean, I look, I'm obviously, like,

6:47 literally have a vested interest in in Framework's success.

6:52 What I do not have a vested interest in is Yes, thank you for that, Luke.

6:56 Uh what I do not have a vested interest in is, like, Linux's success.

6:59 I got no I got no dog in that fight.

7:02 benefit us.

7:03 No, but what it does do is it's it's it's freaking exciting.

7:07 It's freaking exciting, and that benefits me.

7:09 Cuz the more people that use Linux, ideally, the better it'll get.

7:13 And then that benefits me.

7:14 Okay, yes, but not in like a

7:17 Yeah.

7:17 Not in a monetary way, which sort [laughter] of which sort of my point.

7:20 No, I know, I know.

7:20 That's why I said it didn't.

7:23 Yeah, I honestly I I do suspect some people might try it and like it.

7:26 I haven't used Ubuntu in uh I don't know,

7:31 genuinely, like, 15, 20 years, so I have no idea,

7:33 but um I I I do suspect some people might actually Yeah,

7:38 let me let me poke around with this thing.

7:39 I've heard some people talking about it,

7:41 and then might you actually stick with it, which would be really cool.

7:45 Um I also would say that I think a dramatically

7:51 higher percentage of these are real or at least

7:56 people who are going to install a different distro

7:58 but not Windows compared to even this time last year.

8:02 I just thought of something else.

8:03 it's been a massive jump.

8:04 I just thought of something else.

8:06 Okay, hear me out.

8:08 If you're techie enough to install your own operating system,

8:13 what are the odds that you're also techie enough to BYO

8:16 storage drive and probably save a buck on the thing?

8:23 You hear You see where I'm going with this, right?

8:25 Cuz this is people who selected a storage drive.

8:28 is the Right, it would have to be because it comes with an operating system.

8:30 And selected a pre-installed operating system.

8:32 But if you're the kind of person that really

8:34 was just going to rip Ubuntu off of it,

8:36 put Windows on, pirate Windows,

8:39 like you you you have the know-how Don't tell me you don't know how to open up,

8:43 of all things, a Framework laptop.

8:46 And put an SSD in it.

8:48 It's sort of the point.

8:48 Don't even tell me that.

8:50 I still don't fully believe the numbers.

8:55 But that does I think up the percentage that it could be.

8:58 We'll see.

8:59 I think we're going to get less than

9:00 100% of those Ubuntu people moving over to Windows.

9:04 And it's just it's an exciting time

9:07 to be interested in open source software right now.

9:11 It's an exciting time to be interested

9:14 in alternatives to the the tech giants who Dude,

9:19 did I tell talk to you already about

9:20 the first time I fired my Windows laptop back up?

9:24 And it was like it it was like it didn't want me.

9:26 It was like it didn't want me to come back.

9:29 No.

9:29 Did I have a Did I not talk about this on WAN Show?

9:31 I don't think so.

9:33 my Windows drive back in my PX13 that I've been using lately

9:38 in my my strict Halo machine and immediately it did it did the[ __] thing.

9:45 Immediately it did the thing.

9:48 It asked me a hey, it's been a while.

9:51 Do you want Edge?

9:53 Do you like One Drive?

9:56 Have you ever thought about Xbox?

10:02 I off like I I I almost I was so the only reason

10:08 It pushes you away.

10:08 Like it's literally repulsive.

10:11 The only reason that I didn't swap the drives again are because

10:15 this thing has like chassis intrusion detection that I can't figure out

10:19 which one which screw is like the one that I have to tighten

10:22 all the way to get it to even like turn back on.

10:25 Like one of the screws like grounds the thing or something.

10:28 So I had already buttoned it completely back up and the the main

10:32 reason that I had switched back over to Windows was

10:34 because I wanted to try that Logitech Superlight mouse that I've

10:36 been like supposed to try out for us to do the video.

10:40 on Linux?

10:40 Uh well, the Logitech software I wanted to have

10:43 the full suite of Logitech software if I'm evaluating a product.

10:46 is a like third-party stand-in Logitech software thing.

10:49 But yeah, no, that makes sense.

10:50 As a reviewer should have the whole thing.

10:52 Yeah, I should be I should be using it as the manufacturer intends.

10:55 that makes sense.

10:56 But if it wasn't for those two things, I Scout's honor,

11:03 I would have put the other drive back in.

11:05 I just it it was so offense it was offensive.

11:10 It was [snorts] like disrespectful.

11:13 This is This is why

11:14 I am using my computer right now.

11:17 And and

11:19 Move.

11:19 I think the biggest thing for me is I feel

11:21 like I've replaced the time that I spent on Windows

11:25 being annoyed about that kind of stuff learning more about

11:28 my computer and doing cool things with my operating system,

11:31 which is what I'd rather do anyways.

11:33 I've had fun using an operating system

11:37 for the first time since probably Windows 9.

11:43 Okay, yeah.

11:44 Okay, Windows 9 was pretty cool.

11:45 Yeah, yeah, yeah.

11:46 And that's we're not memeing.

11:47 We know there's no Windows 9.

11:48 There was like a modded Windows 8.1 that had like the cruft stripped

11:53 out of it and was like like super responsive that was nicknamed Windows 9.

11:58 Yeah.

11:59 And it's you know, it's not all perfect,

12:00 but one thing that's been really awesome is every

12:04 time I've ran into a problem it is solvable.

12:09 Every time.

12:09 And it for me has never been a major issue.

12:14 Like I replaced a drive and cuz my both

12:18 my hard drives just worst timing in the freaking world.

12:23 Both my hard drives I could hear Worst timing so far.

12:27 something.

12:27 Yeah.

12:28 [laughter]

12:29 I could hear that something was kind of off.

12:30 They were like making more noise than normal.

12:33 So I did a smart check and they both came up

12:35 with like a pretty significant amount of bad sectors and I was like,

12:38 well, I tried to think back to like, how old are these drives?

12:42 I thought they were mine.

12:44 When I finally pulled one out to actually replace it,

12:46 I saw an inventory sticker on it.

12:48 And when I saw the inventory sticker, I was like,

12:49 oh yeah, these are from uh GeoDude V1.

12:56 Okay, so these are old.

12:57 was the GeoDude and then there was

12:58 GeoDude revision and then there was Bulbasaur.

13:01 I might have personally put that inventory sticker on is what you're saying.

13:04 Maybe.

13:05 Yeah, okay.

13:05 Like these are old drives.

13:07 So I was like, okay,

13:08 and I I looked up like the upload date for GeoDude V1 and I was like,

13:11 okay, it might be about time.

13:14 So it's it's fine that they that they died.

13:16 It's not a huge deal, but like it sucks because of the pricing.

13:22 But yeah, I'm replacing those drives and when I when I I it,

13:26 my my computer didn't want to boot.

13:28 It booted into emergency mode.

13:30 And I was like, okay, I know the series of events that just happened.

13:33 I could reverse this, but instead I'm going to pull

13:35 my laptop out and just look up like what could this mean?

13:39 And I there was a very simple explanation of what to do.

13:42 It did require a little bit of command line stuff, but I'm running CentOS.

13:45 I expected this, that's fine.

13:47 I'm looking into okay, what caused this?

13:50 And it's just certain drives can be set up in a way where

13:54 you say CentOS?

13:55 Why did I say CentOS?

13:57 Casio OS.

13:59 Cool.

13:59 Yeah, no, definitely not.

14:01 about like a like an old home lab machine?

14:05 That's really weird.

14:06 Anyways, Um yeah, I was just like, oh okay,

14:10 I have to go into Fstab and just add no

14:12 fail to the drive and then it just booted perfectly.

14:15 I was like, oh that's kind of neat.

14:16 Now I like and then I sat there looking up like what are all

14:19 the different flags for drives and then I'm just like learning stuff as I go on.

14:23 Um It's cool.

14:25 Coming back to the topic we're supposed to be discussing,

14:27 um our discussion question for the framework announcements this week cuz they

14:32 also had their OcuLink connection for the back of the Framework 16.

14:36 Yeah, yeah.

14:37 Uh they also had their new keyboard,

14:38 which is a pretty exciting alternative to the K400.

14:42 Um but our question is forget all the stuff that they just announced just now.

14:47 If they were to make a net new product, what would you want them to make?

14:53 Nirav already talked about the potential.

14:55 He talked about how they've looked at.

14:57 He didn't commit anything, but he talked about how they've looked at printers.

15:01 The printer one I see as a little less necessary.

15:04 Brother does exist.

15:06 They tend to be kind of bros overall for the most part.

15:08 are kind of fine.

15:09 There's they seem kind of fine and it doesn't look like there's a lot of as far

15:13 as I can tell like margin in the printer

15:16 business unless you're willing to fleece people on the ink.

15:20 Yeah.

15:20 So you know sure there's things they could do that could help

15:22 the world in regards to like those massive office printer things,

15:26 but like I think focusing on consumer would be a good idea.

15:30 TVs is one that's

15:31 TVs would be sick.

15:31 really interesting to me.

15:33 Especially if they're doing their own panels.

15:34 Uh well, okay.

15:36 I don't think they would do their own panel for a TV.

15:39 I don't mean I more mean that they might have the expertise

15:42 to like know things about TVs and make a good TV.

15:45 When they did their own panel for the laptop,

15:47 I doubt it was as much that they built the internal expertise and more that they

15:52 they were able to afford to get the glass

15:55 cut in the shape they wanted pretty much.

15:57 Yeah.

15:58 But even that is a is a is a big it's a monetary investment.

16:01 I doubt it it was as much of a technical investment.

16:03 Rest assured said monitor first.

16:05 I actually don't agree.

16:06 Oh, strong disagree.

16:07 Monitors Monitors So, the reason Oh, okay, I should explain why.

16:12 Monitor space is pretty good.

16:13 Mon Yeah, monitors they don't have the same incrapification problem that TVs

16:20 They're not forcing ads down your throat.

16:22 with Brad who's the uh the ShortCircuit channel manager now and um he

16:27 was saying that they they did a video on the LG G something.

16:31 I think it was the G5 a little while ago.

16:33 And like the first time setup process for it was like painful.

16:40 Like all the agreements that you're signing and like you finally

16:45 get to the home screen and it's just freaking it's wall-to-wall.

16:49 It's just covered in ads.

16:52 Yeah.

16:51 If someone were to tell you, "Okay, here's the Framework TV.

16:56 It's the same TV because at the end of the day,

16:59 it's not like they're going to go and reinvent better quantum dots.

17:03 You know, they're they're they're not going

17:05 to they're not going to suddenly have

17:06 the R&D muscle of someone like a like a Sony or a TCL or a Samsung.

17:11 It's not It's not It's not happening.

17:12 That's not what we're talking about here.

17:14 It's going to cost more.

17:15 It'll cost more.

17:17 But if it just got the[ __] out of your way, I'd pay I'd pay for it.

17:21 and looks like solid.

17:23 Like if it was a B+ in terms of the image quality and just when you turned it

17:27 on, it did not take screenshots of the content

17:30 you're watching and send it back to some server somewhere,

17:33 it just opened up to whatever source input you sent to it and just worked.

17:38 I think that had that would have an incredible value to people.

17:41 I think it would

17:43 I think we're reaching the breaking point.

17:46 I I think you know how variety of things.

17:49 I've talked a lot about how people seem to have

17:52 just kind of given up on on like the whole privacy

17:55 ad invasiveness thing and how I think just the the horse

17:58 has has bolted from the from the barn at this point.

18:02 Maybe I'm getting hope again.

18:05 Oh yeah, me too.

18:06 Because I'm starting to see people mad again.

18:10 I think it's because the alternatives are becoming a lot more viable.

18:14 You think so?

18:15 I think so, personally.

18:17 I think self-hosting certain apps is

18:19 like dramatically better than it's ever been.

18:25 Mhm.

18:24 Um I think I think having your own NAS

18:27 for your family is as expensive as hardware is right now.

18:31 trendy, dude.

18:33 It's It's getting

18:34 a geeky way.

18:35 It's getting trendy, but it's also getting trendy because it's pretty good.

18:39 Oh yeah.

18:39 And like it's there is still upkeep time and you still have to do things for it.

18:44 Um but I think the upkeep and the things

18:47 that you have to do are kind of fun now.

18:50 __] makes a really good point.

18:51 People never gave up,

18:53 they just never cared enough because convenience always wins.

18:56 But that's the thing,

18:57 is the the encrapification is crossing that threshold where it's not convenient.

19:06 is less convenient than running Mint on my laptop.

19:10 Windows gets in my way more, slows me down,

19:12 and stops me from doing my job more than Mint does.

19:15 So, like at this point in time, the convenient option is to run Linux.

19:20 And that's not even a Linux nerd.

19:23 I have never once opened the command line.

19:25 I don't know why I looked down here.

19:27 Uh my lap my laptop's not with me right now, but

19:29 I'm sorry to hear that.

19:31 [laughter] Uh I have never once opened the command line on Mint on my laptop.

19:36 I've never done anything fancy.

19:37 All the software I've ever installed is just from the package manager,

19:40 which is effectively an app store on your phone.

19:42 Like I I've done nothing special with that laptop, and it is perfect.

19:49 Like it's This is not a This is not a weird or special thing,

19:53 and I'm just genuinely more productive on it

19:56 because it doesn't pester me about stuff.

19:57 All right.

19:58 Let's pick another category.

20:02 Sure.

20:01 What would Dan?

20:06 What would you want to see them jump into?

20:10 Sorry, you're doing shipstorm right now.

20:11 What are you talking about?

20:12 Oh, yeah.

20:13 I'm sorry, Dan.

20:14 Thank you.

20:16 [laughter] Thank you for your service.

20:16 Bye, Dan.

20:17 I have no idea what's going on.

20:19 Cool, good chat.

20:21 [laughter] Luke, then.

20:24 Uh I'll I'll settle for talking to Luke.

20:26 Good plan.

20:31 [laughter] What a What an appropriate response.

20:33 Uh

20:34 I already think I have one in mind for me, but do you want me to go first then?

20:37 Or do you want to go first just in case it's, you know,

20:39 the best one and you uh think of it before I do.

20:42 No, I I before you ever mentioned I mean,

20:45 I'm certain you already had the thought,

20:46 but before you ever mentioned it really, the TV thing, I had already thought TV.

20:50 TV has been very frustrating for me for a long time.

20:53 Well, you've had to shop for one, unfortunately.

20:56 RIP Luke's TV a couple times recently.

20:58 Yeah.

20:59 And but even like someone will ask me for a recommendation,

21:01 I'm just like, "Ugh." Like I don't feel good about any of the recommendations.

21:06 Samsung has these really great-looking, you know, QD-OLEDs.

21:09 Um Too bad Tizen OS.

21:14 Yep.

21:13 LG has some pretty good-looking WOLEDs.

21:16 Too bad webOS has taken a sharp right turn into crapsville.

21:21 Yeah.

21:21 So, just none of it feels good.

21:23 So, definitely TVs.

21:24 Outside of that, I might need some thinking.

21:28 All right.

21:28 I'm going to I'm going to go with mine.

21:29 I'm going to see if this kind of like I'm

21:31 I'm going to see if this kind of vibes with people,

21:33 but I would actually love to see Framework get into SBCs.

21:39 Like, single-board computers.

21:43 It's a It's a space where the the cost has crept up on people

21:50 in a way that was never really the like the idea, you know?

21:54 Like, the the kind of the the Raspberry Pi contract the original sales pitch.

21:59 The original sales pitch was these things are hyper affordable.

22:03 They're bare-bones.

22:05 Um and they've just kind of um they've just kind of gotten bloated

22:10 both in terms of the the feature set and in terms of price.

22:13 And there are still like very basic ones,

22:16 but it has felt like for some time

22:18 that the availability of the ones that are like,

22:21 you know, supposed to be affordable has been not great.

22:25 And some of the alternatives are not necessarily getting the TLC

22:29 in terms of of of compatibility that the the name brand,

22:34 you know, Raspberry Pis have.

22:36 I would be I'd be very interested in something like a a Framework Pi.

22:40 If they were able to work with their manufacturing partners that they

22:43 obviously have for things like the um like the the laptop, right?

22:48 They obviously can can make a circuit board, right?

22:52 Uh I'd be I'd be interested to see if they could

22:54 if they could make if they could somehow bring their like upgradeable,

22:59 repairable ethos to single-board computers.

23:02 And I don't know maybe maybe it's not

23:04 realistic and maybe it'd be a stupid business

23:06 for them to go into because who wants

23:08 an ASP of like $15 or 20 bucks or whatever.

23:12 But it's somewhere that I I feel like

23:14 potentially they could make they could make a difference.

23:18 Speaking of stupid business for them to go into.

23:22 Yeah.

23:22 With the EU's thing which I don't think we've talked about it

23:25 yet but it's one of the topics in this show I believe.

23:27 Sometimes the WAN shows really blur into each other for me but is phones.

23:33 The EU's pushing replaceable battery phones.

23:37 Mhm.

23:37 Now could be the time.

23:39 Framework has said publicly that they'll never do it.

23:43 That's probably wise.

23:44 And Fairphone already exists.

23:49 Yeah.

23:47 And I think you know for me for Framework to have a reason to come

23:53 in and like compete with Fairphone take

23:57 that tiny tiny market share of people who care

24:00 more about like the sustainability and and repairability

24:04 aspect than they do about like you know

24:07 a phone being a more cohesive high performance

24:10 product and then cut that down the middle.

24:13 It would it feels like it would be a disservice to both of them

24:16 to to to wedge themselves in there unless

24:18 they were really bringing up like a powerful value

24:22 at this point people aren't just buying I

24:24 I know this isn't what you were saying.

24:26 I'm not saying oh so you hate hot dogs.

24:28 I'm just talking.

24:30 But I I think at this point people are just

24:32 buying some people are just buying Frameworks cuz they're cool.

24:36 Oh dude Frameworks are trendy.

24:37 Yeah.

24:38 They're like just kind of sweet.

24:39 Seeing how excited people are to I have no investment in Framework.

24:42 cheer for this company has been very cool.

24:44 And you know what speaking of speaking of cool

24:47 how much better is Nerrel on camera than you?

24:49 He's a lot he's a lot better.

24:52 [laughter] I was I was I was watching that video I was like this is a proof that

24:54 It was a very noticeable.

24:57 [laughter] I saw a couple comments about it, too.

24:59 He's like he used to be just awkward and now he's like kind of cool awkward,

25:03 like trendy awkward.

25:04 I'm I'm sure it helps doing our videos, but I suspect in general he's just been

25:07 doing a lot more of those types of videos.

25:09 he's Well, he has to talk to people.

25:10 He's a CEO.

25:11 He has to motivate.

25:11 He has to like give speeches and stuff, I assume, right?

25:14 Yeah.

25:14 So, you just you get you get practiced at public speaking.

25:17 You don't really have a choice.

25:18 But, uh yeah, no, I thought uh I thought he did a great job in the video.

25:23 Yeah.

25:22 Why don't we do a great job of finding another awesome topic to talk about?

25:26 There's so much this week.

25:30 Yeah.

25:30 Um this that was not shouted out.

25:32 Maybe we should get through the ones we mentioned at the beginning.

25:35 Um Actually, psych.

25:37 I'm going to pull an audible and do the topic line I said that I should have

25:41 brought up at the beginning or that he expected

25:44 I was going to bring up at the beginning.

25:45 let's do it.

25:46 Gemini has escaped from the cloud.

25:48 Cirrascale, I've never heard this verbally said,

25:50 so I'm going to call it Cirrascale.

25:52 Cirrascale cloud services announced an an expanded partnership with Google Cloud

25:57 on Wednesday that will allow them to offer the full Google

26:00 Gemini model to be used completely offline on air-gapped unfortunately Google

26:08 certified hardware appliances built by Dell and featuring eight Nvidia GPUs.

26:14 So, this isn't Can we get a Can we get a Luke[ __] called it.

26:21 Can I Can I get one of those, Dan?

26:22 Can I Can I get one of those?

26:23 This is probably Yeah, don't worry about it.

26:25 This is probably the most like direct version of what

26:28 I was talking about that has been announced so far.

26:32 Yeah.

26:31 Cuz this is like an appliance that you buy that runs

26:35 the the premium cloud-only version of a model and locally for big businesses.

26:41 This is that like, "Oh, hey,

26:42 there's going to be mainframes again" type conversation

26:45 that I had in the in the past.

26:47 I don't remember exactly how I worded it, but something like that.

26:50 This will back to the notes.

26:52 This will allow sectors with serious privacy concerns,

26:55 healthcare, government, defense, finance, etc.

26:59 etc.

26:59 etc.

27:00 Uh, to avoid risking exposure of sensitive data on third-party infrastructure.

27:04 All the customer's data, inputs, outputs, etc.

27:07 It's it's secure because of this.

27:09 Uh, updating your local Gemini will will require a priv- uh, sorry,

27:13 a temporary private connection to Google servers or physically shipping

27:17 your appliance to Google and being sent the new version.

27:20 That's So, this is for This is for big boys.

27:25 Yeah.

27:25 But, while this isn't, you know, quite the way that I think, you know,

27:28 Luke would want to do it if he was rolling his own infra, Yeah, not at all.

27:32 what it is is a clear acknowledgement that the cloud it didn't fail,

27:38 but it wasn't the perfect solution for everyone that it was hailed as.

27:45 Well, and like whether or not you believe the stuff

27:47 with Mythos and whatnot going on right now, um,

27:51 I think honestly the various wars more than anything else have

27:56 been showing us that just a lot of software is just pretty

28:00 vulnerable the stuff if people are willing to spend the time

28:04 and often the money to work hard enough to poke at it.

28:08 And the more connected it is, the more places there are

28:12 Yeah.

28:12 to poke at it.

28:13 Yeah.

28:13 So, if it can just be not connected, then there you go.

28:16 Um, yeah, Google IP is protected by confidential computing sort of that is.

28:23 And Scale CEO Dave Dridgers explained

28:26 that the Gemini model resides entirely in volatile memory.

28:30 As soon as the power is off, the model is gone.

28:34 If the system detects any form of tampering,

28:36 it shuts itself down to wipe the model.

28:40 That's In a weird way, that's kind of cool.

28:44 Yeah.

28:43 That sucks for me.

28:46 [laughter]

28:46 It's like Dr.

28:46 Doofenshmirtz made it.

28:47 It just it has to have a self-destruct button.

28:49 No matter no matter how superfluous it is.

28:51 That's that's wild.

28:52 I I don't mean cool in like a like that's great like cool technology.

28:56 Yeah, exactly.

28:58 You got to you got to respect it.

29:01 Yeah.

29:01 Um I I guess you know with the description

29:03 of the types of places that might get one

29:05 of these and assuming the cost considering it features

29:08 eight Nvidia GPUs and all this other kind of stuff.

29:11 You you got some backup power options, I think.

29:14 I think it's not a huge problem.

29:16 Um JB leaves a note, "It's not clear from the article,

29:19 but I'm assuming model in this case

29:21 might be talking specifically about model weights.

29:24 Otherwise, Google physically shipping you a new

29:26 version doesn't make any sense." Yeah,

29:30 I mean it literally did say or I was kind of wondering what that too,

29:34 but it did say earlier like you would literally ship the unit back, didn't it?

29:38 You could.

29:38 You could ship it back to get updates.

29:40 You could ship the whole unit back.

29:42 That's crazy.

29:43 Which so like They might be serious about that.

29:47 I'm not sure.

29:49 But yeah, wild.

29:50 Kind of cool.

29:51 I I I understand that like you can if you pay out the freaking nose,

29:56 you can get a lot better like performing models online right now.

30:02 But self-hosting models is really cool.

30:04 There's some really crazy stuff.

30:06 There's a There's a Mac OS specific thing.

30:08 This isn't in the notes, so I I'm not going to have details on it,

30:11 but there's a Mac OS specific model of some kind whatever.

30:16 I don't know.

30:17 I don't remember the name of it, but it like basically lives on your cursor.

30:21 Your like mouse cursor.

30:24 So as you're going around and doing things,

30:26 it'll have like the context of what you're looking at and it

30:29 runs locally and it can try to help you with things.

30:31 And somebody was talking about how they were learning how

30:33 to use DaVinci Resolve and as they were kind of poking around,

30:36 it would just like I haven't used it

30:39 and I don't have notes on this, so whatever.

30:41 I saw that via XDA.

30:42 Yeah, maybe I can find it.

30:44 XDA cursor

30:46 Cursor peep.

30:47 Cursor peep.

30:48 what it's called?

30:48 I don't know.

30:48 That's what Hamnetic said.

30:50 I haven't heard of this, so I'm

30:53 It sounds a little creepy.

30:55 Not going to lie, but it runs locally.

30:57 Theoretically it runs locally.

30:59 A cursor peep is not a No, so that's not the name of it.

31:02 Man, I can't remember the name of it.

31:06 Yeah, anyways, it sounded kind of neat.

31:08 There's There's a And I'm And I'm fairly certain it it runs locally.

31:14 This.

31:17 Yeah.

31:17 My Google Fu is still strong.

31:18 It's a relatively small model.

31:21 And it's running locally.

31:23 But it's helpful.

31:25 Theoretically.

31:25 I haven't I haven't used it.

31:26 This is the vibe I got from looking through the article.

31:28 Very cool.

31:29 But there's there's like there's cool stuff you can do with with local hosting.

31:33 And honestly, for a lot of the use cases people have,

31:36 you don't need the massive super powerful models.

31:39 You can just run locally and it can still be helpful.

31:44 Try it out.

31:45 In other sort of AI adjacent news, I don't know if this counts as good news,

31:52 except that it means that I was right, which I never mind.

31:56 It's good for you.

31:57 Elon Musk confirmed on Tesla's Q1 2026 earnings call what he

32:02 had hedged about on a previous earning call in January 2025.

32:07 He has confirmed now that every Tesla sold between 2019 and 2023

32:12 that had their hardware 3 hardware cannot

32:15 achieve unsupervised full self-driving and never will.

32:20 This time there was no hedging.

32:21 This is a quote, Hardware 3 simply does not have the capability.

32:26 This is not a quote.

32:27 Owners would need both a new computer and new

32:31 cameras if they were to upgrade to hardware 4.

32:34 As recently, this is interesting, as recently as October 2025,

32:38 Tesla's own CFO was still telling investors,

32:41 "We have not completely given up on hardware 3." I'm

32:46 going to go off notes for a little bit here.

32:49 Um

32:57 [laughter] That was off notes.

32:59 We just need to make sure Do you remember me telling you Nobody typed that.

33:03 remember me telling you a year ago that I got

33:05 in that argument with that guy at at someone's birthday party?

33:09 Where I was like, "Yeah, hey,

33:10 I know you're like a finance bro or whatever

33:13 and you're like really good at being a finance bro,

33:15 but don't you think at some point the liability of selling millions

33:20 of cars based on that they have a feature that they like completely[

33:23 __] don't have and will never ever have is going to be

33:27 a problem that might affect the like finance bro care about sphere of finance?

33:34 Uh I realize that everything I'm saying is very, very complicated,

33:38 but like this computer no do-y thing you say do-y maybe bad time-y.

33:47 Um

33:49 What are they going to do about it?

33:50 Do they say?

33:51 They haven't.

33:52 Um we can Hold on, let me get back to the notes for a second here.

33:54 The core problem is memory bandwidth.

33:56 Hardware 3 has 1/8 of what Hardware 4 offers,

33:59 uh which Musk says makes it physically impossible

34:01 to run the AI models needed for true autonomy.

34:04 Many of these owners paid up to $15,000 for full self-driving

34:08 based on the promise that it was just a software update away.

34:11 Uh multiple class action lawsuits have already been filed.

34:15 Now, I want to make something clear.

34:18 I obviously seem a little, let's call it, validated right now.

34:23 That's not because I'm rooting against autonomous vehicles.

34:28 It's not because I'm even rooting against Tesla.

34:31 It's because I like seeing liars get

34:34 their comeuppance and he was obviously lying.

34:39 Hardware 3, I remember talking about this way back then.

34:43 Hardware 3, even if it was years and years ahead of its competition,

34:49 was a small chip compared to what other leaders in the space

34:52 were building like Nvidia at the time and they were like not close.

34:57 It just obviously was not powerful enough.

35:02 Obviously and there's no way that Tesla hasn't known this for years.

35:08 Because if it was good enough to do full self-driving,

35:11 do you really think that they would go to all the work to make a new chip?

35:17 Why?

35:17 That's not how the automotive industry works.

35:20 When they have something that performs the function they want it to perform,

35:24 they keep making the same one because that's way cheaper.

35:27 Or they do what like a console manufacturer might

35:30 do where mid-life they will move it to a new

35:33 process node in order to take advantage of better

35:35 power efficiency uh and better um better uh thermal management.

35:42 They don't just build something that has

35:44 eight times the memory bandwidth for fun.

35:50 [laughter]

35:52 Um Musk says that Tesla will offer

35:55 discounted trade-ins towards Hardware 4 cars or direct

35:59 retrofits but admits the volume is so

36:01 massive that service centers can't handle it.

36:04 His solution is building microfactories in major

36:07 cities to run the upgrades like production lines.

36:10 Though no timeline, no cost, and no concrete details were given.

36:15 Uh there's a Linus note on this one.

36:17 This is actually the second time he's admitted that Hardware

36:20 3 is not going to be able to do it.

36:21 The last time was a tweet though.

36:23 Uh this time was in an earnings call where,

36:25 you know, maybe it matters but probably doesn't.

36:28 It's It's been very remarkable for me to watch how many times obvious lies

36:36 have been told in context where like

36:38 legally you're not allowed to lie like that.

36:42 Um and this company just has not been called on it.

36:46 And I just I find the whole thing very very baffling.

36:50 I often get asked, you know, why do you hate Elon?

36:52 I don't hate Elon.

36:55 But I don't respect people who don't respect me enough

36:59 to look me in the eye and tell me the truth.

37:01 If you can look me in the eye and lie

37:03 to me over and over and over and over again, why should I respect you in return?

37:10 You're just a liar.

37:12 And to me it's it's one of the worst things you can be,

37:15 to have no integrity and to just to just brazenly lie.

37:20 I don't respect it.

37:27 Do you think there's any room for him having hope that they

37:32 could make it somehow wildly more efficient and adapt it or something?

37:37 So, here's my thing.

37:38 Because why would he's going to have to announce it eventually?

37:40 Why would he wait?

37:41 He's either in doing it now instead of a few years ago?

37:45 Um the benefit of doing it now is

37:46 they've kind of pivoted to new shiny with Optimus.

37:50 and stuff?

37:53 Um Like it's it's about it's about managing the mood

37:57 as much as it is about even more than it is about,

38:00 you know, financial results or actual product development or anything like that.

38:03 It's It's about It's about keeping people chill with the vibe.

38:09 Um so this is this is right in the lead-up to the SpaceX IPO,

38:12 which is going to have him in the news for for positive reasons again.

38:16 So a quiet Yeah, that's not going to work,

38:18 but like we've got all these ideas for a plan.

38:21 By the way, by the way, SpaceX, SpaceX, SpaceX.

38:23 Um it's it's just it's part of the grift, right?

38:26 It's part of the it's part of the game to to just kind of keep things going.

38:31 And, you know, as for do I think that there's

38:34 a world where he really believed that it was one quarter away?

38:38 Well, I would it would have to be one of two things.

38:41 Either he's a liar or he's stupid.

38:46 And I don't know.

38:47 I'll let him pick which one he wants to be because there's no way that someone

38:52 with all the experience running tech companies

38:55 that he has would have any way of thinking,

38:58 possibly, like when it's so obvious to a, you know, pathetic YouTuber like me.

39:03 There's no way that he didn't have people internally telling him, "Hey,

39:08 this isn't going to happen." Um so, he's either a liar or he's an idiot.

39:12 And so, I don't know.

39:14 You guys can pick which one it is, but those are the only two options.

39:17 If he actually believed that it was coming next quarter, then he's a fool.

39:22 And if he didn't believe it, then he's clearly a liar.

39:25 So, those are those are our only two choices here.

39:30 David needs to speak to me.

39:31 Okay.

39:32 Uh Luke, do you want to Do you want to pick a topic?

39:35 probably something I can grab.

39:36 David apologizes in advance.

39:38 He doesn't mean it.

39:41 [laughter]

39:44 Uh what should we talk about?

39:47 Uh I'm going to steal this topic.

39:49 Uh Xbox drops Game Pass prices as Call

39:52 of Duty officially exits services day-one launch uh slate strategy.

39:58 Now, this is a thing where it doesn't mean that was really fast.

40:03 Um it does Are you back good?

40:06 You're back for good?

40:08 Yes.

40:09 Okay, got it.

40:10 I didn't even have time to finish crunching that chip.

40:13 Yeah.

40:13 Outside of the microphone range.

40:14 Um no, I I actually have a quick update for you guys.

40:18 David needed to cut down the length of the Ship Storm

40:22 call out in our upcoming video that he was working on.

40:26 So, in order to make up for it, it's going to be a shorter one.

40:29 I need you guys to buy more stuff from Ship Storm on Wan Show.

40:33 Dan can handle it.

40:35 Okay, carry on.

40:36 Uh [snorts] so, we were talking about how Xbox uh drops its

40:39 price as Call of Duty is exiting the day one launch strategy thing.

40:43 So, Xbox has officially dropped the price of Game

40:45 Pass Ultimate from $30 to $23 a month.

40:48 That's actually huge.

40:50 What the heck?

40:51 Yeah, that's enormous.

40:52 immediately with PC Game Pass also falling from $16.50 to $14.

40:58 Uh but, there's a big catch.

40:59 New Call of Duty titles will no longer be uh launched day one on the service.

41:04 Uh instead, they'll show up about a year later.

41:08 That's kind of a yikes.

41:10 During the following holiday season.

41:11 With the COD release schedule, that basically means it's not on there.

41:16 You can play the single player, I guess.

41:18 can play like you can play COD with your friends,

41:20 or you can play like poor poor people COD and be ostracized.

41:24 Like, when you think about the social pressure

41:27 of having like the one that everyone's playing,

41:29 that's basically that's basically the divide that they're creating here.

41:33 That's a really interesting line cuz like is it So,

41:37 they're saying $7 less per user

41:42 per month.

41:43 it if people are still going to buy full fat COD outside of that?

41:46 Yeah, this this gives us insight that we would not have any other way of getting

41:53 interesting.

41:55 much of the like the cost of Game Pass is just Call of Duty?

42:01 Is that wild or what?

42:03 Well, at least what they think it is, yeah.

42:05 at least what they're projecting.

42:06 It's not like they haven't had a Call of Duty launch on Game Pass, so it's Yeah.

42:09 It's You got some pretty good information.

42:10 it's based on something.

42:13 Mhm.

42:13 That's [laughter] That's pretty crazy.

42:15 I I know uh the new Microsoft gaming CEO Xbox CEO uh person said like,

42:22 "Oh, Game Pass is too expensive." But I don't think this is just altruistic.

42:26 I think it's going to be a business move.

42:28 Yeah, she she's actually been seemingly doing some pretty based stuff so far.

42:33 she's at least saying that she's making so far.

42:36 Yeah.

42:35 I know I was I was pretty tentative on her because she came from AI background.

42:41 Yeah.

42:40 Um but yeah, the statements I've seen so far are good.

42:43 The like we are Xbox, we should drop the whole Microsoft gaming thing was dope.

42:47 Did you see the new Xbox logo?

42:50 No.

42:51 Dude, it's badass.

42:54 Yo!

42:54 So the It's back.

42:55 Yeah, the like this thing is gone.

42:58 Good.

42:58 And this is back.

43:00 That's so good.

43:01 That's sick.

43:02 So I don't know good moves and and maybe one singular

43:06 thing out of Microsoft lately will be good.

43:10 [laughter]

43:10 I'm I'm willing to be I'm willing to be open-minded on that, you know?

43:14 Uh but yeah, I mean game Game Pass price drop is is sweet.

43:18 Um the the new logo looks fantastic.

43:21 The whole idea of really centralizing around

43:22 Xbox instead of Microsoft gaming is is great.

43:25 She made a statement.

43:26 She made a statement about like, you know,

43:29 games being human crafted, which I thought was pretty pretty chill.

43:34 Sweet.

43:34 Yep.

43:34 Yeah.

43:34 Did you finish all of this reading through all of it?

43:37 No.

43:37 Oh, okay.

43:37 Sorry.

43:37 Carry on.

43:39 Uh this comes just days after the new

43:41 Microsoft CEO Asha Sharma uh leak Asha Sorry,

43:45 Asha Sharma leaked memo called Game Pass too expensive.

43:50 The price hike to $30 only happened in October 2025,

43:53 1 month before Black Black Ops 7 launched.

43:57 Okay, so it was raised for that.

43:58 So they just lowered it back down.

43:59 That's fine.

44:00 Um for context, Bloomberg reports day one

44:03 COD access cost Microsoft over 300 million dollars

44:07 in lost sales last year with Black Ops

44:10 7 launch sales down over 60% in some markets.

44:14 Wild.

44:15 Microsoft spent $69 billion to buy Call of Duty, put it on Game Pass,

44:20 hike the price to cover it, and is now pulling it back out.

44:22 Was the whole thing worth it?

44:24 I mean, if they're I mean, it could be.

44:28 Dude, we're at the point now where like the the the the billions

44:31 of dollars for company acquisitions have gotten just crazy.

44:36 Like remember when Twitch sold for $1 billion,

44:40 AND EVERYONE WENT, "WHOA!" OKAY, like for context, Twitch,

44:45 while not a money maker, is a strong brand with like strong

44:52 recognizability for younger people with countless users.

44:58 Like it's it's a it's a hyper powerful social media video platform,

45:04 and it sold for a billion dollars,

45:06 and then it was just like what what what was it?

45:08 Like 10 years later or whatever else

45:10 that Twitter sold for 44 billion, and you know,

45:15 I I just it's it's Yeah, are you talking about this 1.75 trillion or whatever?

45:21 Yeah.

45:22 Okay, so so SpaceX acquires Cursor for 60 billion

45:27 They have they have they have they have they

45:29 have the right to They haven't actually done it yet,

45:32 but Cursor has been like, "You can buy us for 60 billion dollars."

45:36 we just are we just reaching a point where these numbers are

45:39 just kind of pure silliness with absolutely

45:43 no attachment whatsoever to business reality?

45:46 Or or or is that Or is that point well in the rearview mirror behind us?

45:50 Like I just

45:50 Yeah, I think it's I think it's behind us, to be completely honest.

45:53 Like I I I would sell Linus Media Group for for 60 billion dollars.

45:58 I'd I'd sell the right to acquire Linus

46:00 Media Group for 60 billion dollars, no problem.

46:02 It's like what's what's the problem?

46:03 I bet I'm more profitable than them.

46:05 It's just as legitimately on paper as the uh

46:07 the the memory purchases from Sam Altman.

46:10 Yeah, exactly.

46:11 Amikar and Full Point Shot said, "As a British Indian,

46:13 I can confirm it's pronounced more like Asha." Thank you.

46:18 Sounds good.

46:19 Um

46:22 Was it worth it?

46:24 Cuz I mean, technically they did get more than just Call of Duty.

46:29 There was Candy Crush Saga.

46:32 World of Warcraft.

46:33 Whatever stuff Blizzard is pissing away.

46:36 Um I've heard people are happy with the the new stuff.

46:43 Oh, yeah?

46:44 I don't I don't even remember what it's called.

46:46 Latest Candies?

46:47 No, the wild stuff.

46:49 Oh, really?

46:50 Uh Midnight.

46:50 Midnight.

46:52 Okay, well, that's cool.

46:53 Yeah, oh, okay.

46:54 Oh, oh, oh, oh, cool says, "Yeah, new wild good."

46:58 Overwatch is apparently also like I think since

47:02 they just gave up on the whole two stuff,

47:05 it's been getting more attraction again, which is interesting.

47:08 Wow, Rob Phil says, "StarCraft tabletop game coming." What?

47:13 Schwat?

47:15 Interesting.

47:15 Please don't tell me it's just Risk.

47:17 You have my attention.

47:20 You know, game-inspired tabletop games have

47:22 been doing pretty well lately, actually.

47:27 starcrafttmg.com Maybe the page will load.

47:32 [laughter and gasps] About our

47:33 Oh, I'm on it.

47:33 My page loaded.

47:35 Nice.

47:36 Okay, what am I what am I what am I looking at here?

47:38 What am I looking at?

47:38 Tabletop miniatures game.

47:39 So, is it Warhammer?

47:42 These are very concept dirty.

47:46 60 to 120 minutes.

47:48 It's Warhammer.

47:49 Oh, okay.

47:51 I mean, sure.

47:54 It sure is Warhammer.

47:57 Oh.

47:57 Okay, so they're just chasing that Warhammer money.

48:02 Yeah.

48:03 Apparently them Warhammer gamers got them moneys.

48:06 All right.

48:06 My God.

48:08 I mean, they don't call it Warhammer 401K for a reason.

48:12 [laughter]

48:12 That's pretty good.

48:13 I've never heard that before.

48:15 I haven't either.

48:15 That is pretty good.

48:16 That's good that's good[ __] Yeah.

48:18 Okay.

48:18 Okay.

48:18 Okay.

48:20 [laughter] Are you going to lower the price, please?

48:21 I don't think it's going to happen.

48:22 Nope.

48:22 All right.

48:23 Well, anyway.

48:24 Good luck with that, Blizzard.

48:27 Yeah.

48:29 Um Yeah, let's let let's let's do let's do a thing.

48:31 Let's All right.

48:35 Uh where do I find that?

48:38 Oh, I already I already kind of did that though.

48:41 I mean, sure.

50:00 Oh, right.

50:01 Yeah, okay, right.

50:01 And if you if you send if you place your order now,

50:04 then it's a perfect time to uh send a comm, a checkout message.

50:17 We think that it's great for us to be able to interact with you guys,

50:20 but we also want you to get quality merchandise in the mail.

50:23 So, we created checkout messages,

50:26 which are the best way to interact with the WAN Show.

50:28 All you got to do is head over to lttstore.com.

50:31 Luke's on it.

50:33 Add uh some terrific quality merchandise to your cart.

50:37 When you went to lttlabs.com plug.

50:39 Shameless plug.

50:40 Nice, nice.

50:41 New site, by the way.

50:43 Oh, yeah.

50:43 Oh, yeah, the new site is live.

50:44 Now's a great time to go just like browse

50:47 the site and check out all the cool stuff.

50:48 The the team worked super hard on this.

50:51 Um by the way

50:52 By the way, the multi-pocket leggings, dude Smash hit.

50:55 Oh, yeah.

50:55 Do you remember me talking about like, "Hey, we really need this to be a success

50:58 or like women's apparel might not be a thing." Dude,

51:00 but they they're gone.

51:01 Classic LTT Store fashion,

51:03 tried to get some for for friends and family, they're gone.

51:07 Nice.

51:08 [laughter]

51:08 So many sizes are sold out.

51:10 So, if you want to have a shot at them, now's a great time to go check it out.

51:12 Anyway, I don't know, throw a screwdriver in the cart.

51:14 So, all you got to do is throw something in your cart, and you will see

51:19 Bum ba da bum.

51:20 Bum ba da bum.

51:21 The checkout message interface.

51:23 You can leave a message.

51:24 That'll go to producer Dan, who will reply to it,

51:27 or he will uh just pop it up like that one that's up at the top right now,

51:32 or he will curate it for me and Luke to respond to.

51:36 By the way, there's a new dashboard where you can see your checkout messages.

51:41 How do people access that?

51:44 Uh Uh is it again?

51:46 in case you miss the little, you know, the little pop-up like this.

51:49 Uh Um I think it's at the bottom here.

51:52 There's a spot somewhere.

51:54 So, if we go to my screen, check out message portal right here.

51:58 Yeah, so if you're signed in, there you go.

52:01 Nice.

52:03 That is That is like the geekiest 1990s how many page visits

52:09 my GeoCities site has received thing that I have seen in forever.

52:13 I actually kind of like it.

52:15 yeah.

52:14 That's pretty cool.

52:16 That's very cool.

52:17 All [snorts] right.

52:17 Anyway, Dan, do you want to show us how it

52:19 works by curating a couple of checkout messages for us?

52:24 Before, hold on before you do that though,

52:26 David Gauthier's neighbor Joseph is apparently a huge

52:29 LTT fan and it's his birthday this week.

52:33 Oh.

52:32 Happy birthday, Joseph.

52:33 Happy birthday, Joseph.

52:34 David never asks for anything like that.

52:36 So, when he was like, "Hey,

52:38 it would mean a lot to me if you could shout out Joseph." I was like,

52:41 "Yes, you know, sure thing, sir." All right, Dan, hit me.

52:46 Sure thing.

52:47 Happy storm sale, DLL.

52:49 Can you please tell the story of what happened to the Moto shirt?

52:52 I was going to buy one as a gift for my employee.

52:54 Only one.

52:56 It's all that was deserving.

52:59 No, I can't.

53:02 Okay.

53:02 Sorry, what What was the question?

53:04 The Moto shirt is no longer on the site.

53:10 Oh.

53:10 Yeah.

53:11 Up next.

53:13 I at some point I may or may not know what

53:17 I may or may not be able to say about it.

53:24 [laughter] But it is not this day.

53:25 How has the process for vetting sponsors evolved over time?

53:29 Any learnings you care to share?

53:31 Yeah, actually.

53:32 I mean, I think in the very early days we didn't really have a lot of choice.

53:37 It was It was pretty much whoever was

53:38 in my Rolodex from my time at NCIX and, you know,

53:42 was willing to go to bat for me

53:44 and and try to try to allocate some of the budget

53:47 that at the time would have been predominantly allocated

53:50 to like written media for this like newfangled YouTube sponsorships thing.

53:56 Um It it's it's it's still wild to me how long

53:59 the transition took and even now as has continued to take given how

54:05 how data heavy uh video is and how sort of like obviously

54:11 more trustworthy those metrics are compared

54:13 to more traditional mediums like magazines.

54:15 Like I've talked about this on the WAN Show before,

54:17 but did you know that the way

54:18 that magazines calculate how much you're paying for ads

54:22 assumes that that magazine gets read cover to cover

54:25 like like six times or something like that.

54:28 Like Like newspapers too.

54:29 Like they would calculate that every

54:30 newspaper passed through multiple people's hands

54:33 and that every person who looked at it looked at every single ad.

54:36 Like it like it's like it was crazy.

54:39 Uh whereas with video we had, you know,

54:41 the world's biggest advertising company with the most sort

54:46 of as far as I could tell trustworthy analytics saying,

54:51 "Hey, you got this many views." And people just like they weren't into it.

54:55 They weren't interested in it.

54:56 So for a long time it was whoever would go to bat for me and and would,

55:00 you know, get us the support to to to sponsor the videos.

55:04 And then from there there was a a big

55:06 transition to uh like radio advertisers were moving into podcasting.

55:12 And then from podcasting it's a pretty

55:15 natural transition into like video podcasts.

55:18 And then from there a lot of those folks like the Squarespaces of the world,

55:22 uh the like Dollar Shave Clubs of the world made their way into into YouTube.

55:27 Um from there that model proved so successful for companies like Dollar Shave

55:32 Club that uh in in growing their business that I think over time it

55:37 would just became sort of part of the playbook and so nowadays um

55:41 like I was I was at a conference recently for YouTubers and YouTube executives.

55:47 It's It's over now so I can I can disclose that it existed.

55:51 And uh one of the big things that uh that YouTube was talking

55:54 about that other creators are talking

55:56 about is like major major brand partnerships.

55:59 You know, one talked about working with McDonald's.

56:01 Um they showed this example of like a like

56:04 a a collaboration between State Farm and like a more

56:06 athletic oriented YouTuber who tried to kick like

56:09 a whole bunch of field goals or something like that.

56:11 Um so nowadays you have kind of a ton of choice.

56:17 a State Farm thing?

56:19 So you got a ton of choice these days

56:20 and so back to your question about vetting.

56:22 I guess what I'll say is in the early days we

56:24 didn't really have to because it was all brands that we

56:28 like already were intimately familiar with the product or the people

56:31 and so we like we knew or later on it was super

56:35 established brands who if they had a bunch of really awful

56:37 skeletons in their closet they would uh they it would have

56:40 come up at some point in the podcasting world which is

56:42 like kind of a more sort of professional old school media space.

56:46 And then now that your inbox at any given time if you're a a mid-sized or up

56:51 creator is just going to be full of sponsorship

56:54 opportunities it's a it's a ton of work.

56:57 So I got to give a ton of credit

56:59 to both our business team and our uh our community.

57:03 So we actually uh I I think the team does

57:07 a a quite good job of just sort of doing background

57:09 checks on sponsors that we work with and I also think

57:12 our community does a really good job of of highlighting things

57:17 that arise with the brands that we're working with that don't

57:20 align with our values and with our expectations which I think

57:24 in turn elevates the perception of the brands that do meet

57:28 the bar and that do work with you know, Linus Media Group.

57:31 So uh you know, for us,

57:34 our our brand selection really comes down to that they operate with integrity,

57:39 um that they take care of our viewers.

57:41 Like, if one of our viewers comes to us and basically goes like,

57:44 "Yeah, this this brand screwed me over.

57:47 Like, I got scammed, um and I have receipts." You know,

57:51 that's something that we want to know,

57:52 and we have feedback We have a feedback

57:54 form for that at uh linustechtips.com on the forum.

57:57 Um and that's that's a that's a huge part of it,

57:59 just maintaining that that accountability and that integrity all

58:03 the way uh all the way up and down.

58:07 This is super off topic, but you were talking about Dollar Shave Club,

58:10 and I I realized that I haven't heard about them in freaking forever.

58:16 So, I just looked it up, and like, they do still exist,

58:19 but I was like genuinely somewhat surprised by that.

58:22 I find it really interesting.

58:24 Certain companies, uh maybe even certain products.

58:28 I looked it up, apparently uh Dollar Shave Club is under capital management now,

58:32 so like, okay, whatever.

58:35 Um but certain companies, they just sort of stop eventually.

58:40 I find this especially in like, you know, like

58:42 Well, they run out of VC capital.

58:44 snacks and certain like grocery store stuff.

58:46 just was like spending money like there was no tomorrow,

58:49 and then suddenly there was no tomorrow.

58:50 Yeah, but but even like even like uh I Savage Jerky?

58:55 Is that another example?

58:56 No, I'm talking even big brand stuff.

58:59 Oh, sure.

59:00 Like, even even if you're like under the Coke umbrella or something.

59:04 Oh my god.

59:05 Madrina's not only still exists, but they have a Dave the Diver like Huh.

59:10 What what what what is this?

59:12 Is it like an energy powder thing?

59:13 That's hilarious.

59:14 All right, anyway.

59:15 Squid flavor.

59:17 Sure.

59:17 Sure, why not?

59:19 Um but there'll be like some Think of some like snack

59:22 that would have been advertised on TV like crazy when we were kids,

59:26 and then you never hear about it

59:27 on any form of advertisement ever in many years,

59:30 but it's still in the store.

59:32 I literally haven't seen a Dunkaroo ad since I was a child.

59:35 like every channel when I was growing up.

59:38 Dunkaroos, Dunkaroos, get as much frosting as you choose.

59:41 I'm sure they still exist.

59:44 But like it's yeah, they for sure.

59:46 It's it's weird to me though that they'll just they'll just stop at some point.

59:52 They will just completely turn off the the advertising pipeline.

59:58 But this you can't call it a nostalgic

1:00:00 snack and then shape the cookie like that.

1:00:04 It was a foot.

1:00:06 Ugh.

1:00:08 Terrible.

1:00:09 Literally literally inedible.

1:00:10 know if I had Dunkaroos.

1:00:12 But yeah, there was ads for them everywhere and then they just stopped.

1:00:14 There's there's a ton of things like that, too.

1:00:16 You when you walk through the grocery store, it's like almost a weird if you go

1:00:19 through like mostly the boxed goods area, obviously.

1:00:23 Um it's kind of a weird experience of like, oh yeah,

1:00:25 I remember ads for that thing like 20 years ago.

1:00:29 I've never heard of it ever since other than it just being on the shelf.

1:00:33 Um It's it's just interesting to me like how these We if it's Coke,

1:00:38 I kind of understand cuz you probably have an R&D

1:00:40 group that's for just like all of your different product lines.

1:00:46 And they'll just release some stuff kind of whatever.

1:00:48 But if you're a relatively smaller company, like what?

1:00:53 You just like fire everyone and stop?

1:00:55 But you just keep making your product, I guess.

1:00:58 I literally don't know.

1:00:59 Apparently there were lots of different shapes

1:01:00 of Dunkaroos I'm I'm finding other shapes of Dunkaroos.

1:01:03 Coke also has murder squads to help.

1:01:05 Yeah, I'm not endorsing them.

1:01:06 That's a whole separate thing.

1:01:08 Yeah.

1:01:09 To be clear.

1:01:09 Happened in a whole separate country, completely out of your jurisdiction.

1:01:12 So what are you going to do about it?

1:01:13 Throw it out of court.

1:01:15 It's a wild story if you want to go down a rabbit hole.

1:01:17 Yeah, it really it really is.

1:01:20 [clears throat]

1:01:22 Okay.

1:01:21 Oh, speaking of you know,

1:01:22 brands sort of doing things that are not always totally predictable.

1:01:27 Or wait, do you still owe us another com Oh, no, we're moving into topics now.

1:01:30 I mean, we could do another one.

1:01:31 I would probably prefer that.

1:01:32 We have quite a few.

1:01:34 Okay.

1:01:34 All right, let's do one more.

1:01:35 I am looking at possibly getting a new handheld.

1:01:38 I know Linus has a large variety of them.

1:01:41 I have the OG Steam Deck.

1:01:42 Is it worth it to upgrade to something different?

1:01:45 Money is not in consideration.

1:01:48 Oh, I mean, yeah, sure.

1:01:49 If money's not in consideration, buy one of each.

1:01:52 Okay, I know I know people don't

1:01:53 Hate it when they say that.

1:01:54 People never really mean that money is not a consideration.

1:01:58 Money is always a consideration.

1:02:00 You could literally be shopping for a private jet and money would

1:02:05 still be a consideration because there's

1:02:07 there's degrees of copious amount of money.

1:02:09 But I Okay, I'm going to I'm going to assume that what

1:02:12 you meant is that you could fit into your budget any one handheld.

1:02:18 And if that's the case,

1:02:21 I got to tell you that I haven't yet seen my perfect Steam Deck upgrade.

1:02:30 There are handhelds that are bigger.

1:02:34 There are handhelds that are better.

1:02:36 There are or faster, rather.

1:02:39 There are ones that are that have features that the Steam Deck doesn't have.

1:02:46 Um, you know, like if you wanted an OLED screen, you could get this one.

1:02:50 Or if you wanted

1:02:51 Just Steam Deck OLED.

1:02:52 Better compatibility.

1:02:53 Uh, yeah, but they have a They have an original Steam Deck, though.

1:02:56 Oh.

1:02:56 Uh, if if you wanted more compatibility, there's ones that run Windows.

1:02:59 If you wanted one with detachable like

1:03:01 Joy-Con things that have like mice in them.

1:03:04 Uh, Lenovo has one that does that.

1:03:06 Like there's You name a gimmick, somebody has it.

1:03:08 If you want one that has like ergo grips,

1:03:10 there's the Xbox Ally Series X Ally thing.

1:03:14 Um, you know, some something like that, right?

1:03:17 But, Valve keeps saying, "Hey,

1:03:20 we need like like next-generation level hardware in order to rev the Steam Deck,

1:03:28 in order to do a Steam Deck 2." And Valve keeps holding off.

1:03:35 And I I kind of hm it's hard for me to disagree with them.

1:03:39 Now, with that said, I do daily a more powerful handheld.

1:03:43 I have an ROG Ally.

1:03:45 That's actually my daily driver,

1:03:46 which is crazy because I actually have an Xbox ROG Ally X,

1:03:50 whatever it's called, thing in my house that I don't use because,

1:03:54 and this is going to be crazy sounding, when I'm playing handheld,

1:03:57 I actually prefer the flat deck compared to the like the like ergo grip thing,

1:04:04 or at least I don't prefer the grips enough to be

1:04:08 worth how much extra space it takes up in my backpack.

1:04:11 it's uh okay, that's a pretty interesting argument.

1:04:13 Do you think it's hand size?

1:04:14 I think that's part of it,

1:04:16 but I think it's also just like that the ergo

1:04:19 grip thing is like perfect for playing like this.

1:04:23 And I don't always play like this.

1:04:26 Okay.

1:04:26 Sometimes I'm lying on my tummy, sometimes I roll over onto my back,

1:04:30 and and the flat deck just works a little better for me.

1:04:33 So, that Ally that I upgraded on Short Circuit with the JSAUX upgraded battery,

1:04:38 and then the new back on it, so it's a little bit heavier,

1:04:41 is is actually still my preferred handheld out of out of all of them,

1:04:46 even though it's like an like an older It's an older handheld,

1:04:48 sir, but it checks out, you know.

1:04:50 My fav- I I I never played it laying down looking up,

1:04:55 um but my my favorite for ergonomics handheld,

1:04:58 if you can even call it that, was that the the Wii U controller.

1:05:02 Oh, yeah.

1:05:02 I really liked Oh, yeah.

1:05:04 the the like feel.

1:05:05 That's one of the reasons why I was like

1:05:07 a little frustrated with the Switch when it first came out,

1:05:09 was So like I get it.

1:05:12 The Wii U controller is really bulky cuz it was set up for a home console, but

1:05:16 like practically pocketable by comparison.

1:05:18 Like it's But it just it didn't feel like

1:05:20 my my hands were very cramped on the original Switch.

1:05:24 Yeah.

1:05:23 I mean, my hands were cramped on the original Switch.

1:05:26 Okay.

1:05:26 Okay, with that said, there is there is a handheld that uh you know,

1:05:32 it is is next generation in terms of performance, but you would be spending

1:05:37 Uh yeah.

1:05:38 Here, hold on.

1:05:38 What is a Win 5 go for right now?

1:05:41 Here it is, gpdstore.net.

1:05:43 Okay, nine reviews.

1:05:44 Okay, people mostly are pretty into it.

1:05:48 Okay, that's good to know.

1:05:50 This guy's a little disappointed, but still gave it three stars.

1:05:54 All right, what's a Win 5 worth right now?

1:05:58 Two grand.

1:05:59 That's not even the top configuration.

1:06:02 That is the base configuration.

1:06:05 1 TB of storage.

1:06:08 That's actually the one that's the most painful to me.

1:06:10 Like okay, I want 2 TB of storage.

1:06:12 So ex- sorry, excuse me, another $400?

1:06:16 Storage is so ridiculous right now.

1:06:19 Um that's rough.

1:06:19 I want to go to a Ryzen 9 3950X?

1:06:21 Oh, oh, that'll be Sorry, that'll be $2,800, sir.

1:06:25 Also Oh, okay, you also get I mean, honestly Oh, wow.

1:06:27 Okay, well, I would take I would certainly

1:06:30 take the 64 gigs of RAM, 2 TB storage,

1:06:33 and the better CPU over the uh 4 TB 32 and then lower CPU because uh

1:06:40 these ones it's not just the CPU that's

1:06:42 that's worse for this one, it's also the GPU.

1:06:44 So this is the more powerful GPU.

1:06:46 So yeah, yeah, you're spending uh $2,800 US dollars.

1:06:50 [clears throat]

1:06:51 A handheld, though.

1:06:52 And and it's barely handheld, dude.

1:06:55 It has like this like battery pack thing that weighs

1:06:58 a flipping ton that clips onto the back of it.

1:07:00 Or how I usually ended up using it was with the weird tether.

1:07:04 Yeah, the te- especially the tether.

1:07:06 If you're like commuting on a train or something with a lot of your time,

1:07:10 which I suspect a lot of handheld bros are

1:07:13 You Yeah.

1:07:14 commuting on trains or buses or whatever,

1:07:16 I could see that being fine, to be honest.

1:07:19 here's the tether.

1:07:20 It's Oh.

1:07:21 It's pretty

1:07:22 That's weirder than I expected, to be honest.

1:07:24 It's because it's just the battery.

1:07:26 It looks like it was for like a platform or something.

1:07:28 Am I seeing that wrong in the picture?

1:07:30 So, this is the clip interface here that sticks onto uh the battery interface

1:07:36 that is on the back of this battery and is on the back of the machine.

1:07:39 And then it just like goes to an umbilical cord to the back of the thing.

1:07:42 So, it can be like this, or it can be like this.

1:07:44 And so, yeah, is there something better than the Steam Deck?

1:07:47 Like, yeah, there's lots of things that are

1:07:49 better than the Steam Deck in some way.

1:07:52 But, there is in my opinion,

1:07:54 nothing that is better than the Steam Deck in every way.

1:08:00 And that's that's tough.

1:08:01 That makes it tough for me to recommend something and it

1:08:05 without like knowing you and knowing exactly what you're after.

1:08:09 And I can see why it makes it tough for Valve to go,

1:08:12 "Okay, here's Steam Deck 2."

1:08:17 Yeah.

1:08:17 And especially now amidst the RAM apocalypse.

1:08:19 Yeah, I don't blame Valve for waiting at all.

1:08:21 I think it makes sense.

1:08:22 Um I think my time I I'm like I've already kind of convinced

1:08:27 myself I'm going to buy a Steam Deck 2 when they get announced,

1:08:30 like right off the hop.

1:08:32 Um That.

1:08:35 I think I feel like it's too late to get one now,

1:08:38 yet out of all of them,

1:08:39 that's the one that I want right now, if that makes sense.

1:08:42 So, I have I have my Switch 2.

1:08:45 I'm just going to hang on to that.

1:08:46 I was I contemplating selling it, but no, I'm just going to hang on to that.

1:08:49 And then, uh when the when the Steam Deck 2 finally comes out,

1:08:53 I'm assuming it's going to be another like 2 years.

1:08:56 Um Hopefully not much more than that.

1:09:00 I think 2 years sounds about right.

1:09:02 Yeah.

1:09:02 Cuz by then we'll be like well into Steam Machine and Steam Frame life cycle,

1:09:06 so they'll have had some time cuz realistically ain't no way that the Steam

1:09:12 Machine Steam Frame team is not pivoting to Steam Deck 2 once they're done.

1:09:18 So give them a year to get everything kind of going with those.

1:09:24 Yeah.

1:09:24 And then there's no way that they don't get some

1:09:25 resources for Steam Deck 2 and then make that happen.

1:09:28 Oh hi Josh posted "Do you play games that are too much for Steam Deck?

1:09:31 It might still be worth it." That is a super interesting question that I've

1:09:37 I've had some conversations with actually some people in the labs about of like

1:09:41 That's a super fair point.

1:09:42 If you want to play Balatro If it's a Balatro machine anyways

1:09:46 Do it.

1:09:47 then who cares?

1:09:47 What does it matter?

1:09:48 Um it could be a fun video for for you guys

1:09:51 to make is like the Steam Deck however many years later.

1:09:55 95% No, not 95, but like 85% of my hours

1:09:58 on my Ally or Steam Deck over the years are tape-to-tape.

1:10:03 I also I also Yeah, and that would have played that on anything.

1:10:05 Yeah.

1:10:06 I Another angle and this was not my idea.

1:10:08 I don't remember who said it, but um maybe it was even you.

1:10:11 I I have genuinely no memory of who said

1:10:13 this, but um if you could somehow get like

1:10:17 the original or close to the original version of Steam

1:10:20 OS on it and compare the performance then to now.

1:10:26 I don't know if we benchmarked it at the time.

1:10:29 I don't really think so.

1:10:31 Uh there'd be a Someone might have?

1:10:32 There'd be so many variables.

1:10:34 I think someone might have actually done this.

1:10:38 Oh maybe.

1:10:38 I don't know.

1:10:39 Um wasn't it Nvidia only though?

1:10:42 And like I think maybe you could like hack in Radeon support.

1:10:45 I I I don't remember the details well enough.

1:10:47 I'd have to They They should put an Nvidia card the Steam Deck.

1:10:50 For the Steam?

1:10:51 No, no.

1:10:51 I'm talking original Steam OS.

1:10:53 No, I'm not.

1:10:55 Oh, you mean Steam OS 3, but like the first version of Steam OS 3.

1:10:59 I meant Yeah, the first version for the Steam Deck.

1:11:02 Got it.

1:11:02 Uh I thought you meant like I didn't say that.

1:11:04 It's my bad.

1:11:04 Sorry, the one from like 14 years ago.

1:11:07 no, no, no, no, no.

1:11:07 Or 10 years ago or whatever.

1:11:09 be a little less.

1:11:09 I I more mean like what performance changes have happened like deep diving

1:11:14 what is it like to own a Steam Deck this many years in?

1:11:17 I think it would be kind of fun.

1:11:18 So, like how much performance gain have you had from updates or lack thereof?

1:11:21 Who knows.

1:11:22 Uh but I think it would be gain.

1:11:24 Um how is your like, "Hey,

1:11:27 let's look at like the the top 10 games that are compatible with Steam Deck

1:11:31 Yeah.

1:11:31 in terms of players right now, how well is it performing um on the Steam Deck?

1:11:36 Like is this still a highly viable device for most people?

1:11:39 Stuff like that.

1:11:40 I think it would be kind of fun.

1:11:41 Really interesting.

1:11:42 I think it's I think it's a cool idea.

1:11:43 We have so many video ideas on the docket right now.

1:11:46 BIOS updates would be difficult to downgrade.

1:11:47 Yeah, we'd have to try to find like an unboxed one or something.

1:11:51 It wouldn't be an easy thing to do.

1:11:54 Yeah.

1:11:54 but it could be kind of fun.

1:11:55 I'm feeling that's the kind of thing that Valve,

1:11:58 if they weren't so flipping busy right now,

1:12:00 might even be interested in helping us with.

1:12:04 Mhm.

1:12:03 Like, "Hey, could you guys We just Can we ship you a Steam Deck and can

1:12:06 you please put it back in like There's no way they don't have it somewhere."

1:12:09 My My expectation is that there's actually

1:12:11 been some pretty massive jumps in performance.

1:12:14 Looking at like the things that have

1:12:15 happened in gaming ever since the original launch.

1:12:18 So, that could be like honestly a really good thing for them to have.

1:12:24 Something that'd be a good thing for us to have is

1:12:26 a more coherent strategy for how we're transitioning to the WAN Show channel.

1:12:32 I think we may have to just pull the plug on streaming WAN

1:12:39 Show to LTT because right now it's causing a lot of confusion for people.

1:12:43 We go live and we have a separate VOD

1:12:46 on the Linus Tech Tips channel and on the WAN Show channel.

1:12:48 And I got to say I'm actually surprised and impressed with how

1:12:52 much of the community has flipped over to WAN Show channel.

1:12:55 It's almost it's not quite 50/50,

1:12:58 but it's like getting there a lot faster than I thought.

1:13:00 So, WAN Show channel is around 5,000 uh views.

1:13:05 That's views, okay.

1:13:05 And then the live the live one is the far left one?

1:13:09 Yeah, okay.

1:13:09 Yeah, so I think we we might just have to like

1:13:12 we might just have to do it sometime soon here.

1:13:17 I didn't foresee this, but it totally makes sense.

1:13:20 Yeah.

1:13:20 The second someone told me like, "Oh, there's there's two in my feed.

1:13:23 This sucks." I was like, "Oh, right."

1:13:25 Yeah, I'm I'm really sorry.

1:13:26 We we do need to co-stream for a little while, but guys,

1:13:29 uh if you are watching on Linus Tech Tips channel right now,

1:13:33 please sooner rather than later get subscribed over on The WAN Show.

1:13:38 So, go go look for the channel.

1:13:39 It used to be the LMG Clips channel.

1:13:41 We rebranded it.

1:13:42 Go subscribe over on The WAN Show.

1:13:44 We got to get everybody moved over there sooner rather

1:13:46 than later or you will not see WAN Show anymore.

1:13:50 And the reason for it is it's a business reason.

1:13:52 Uh Luke and I are now 50% co-owners of The WAN Show,

1:13:55 which means it's got to get off of the LTT

1:13:58 channel in order to secure its long-term future.

1:14:01 Thank you, WAN Show, for your service.

1:14:03 Um all right, let's jump right into our next topic here, which is Oh, lord.

1:14:12 Should we do it?

1:14:14 Let's talk about it.

1:14:15 AMD's Ryzen 9 9950X3D to dual edition launch.

1:14:22 If you were wondering how the chip performs,

1:14:24 uh it's virtually identical to a 9800X3D or a 9950X3D in gaming.

1:14:30 It got a 4 to 5% improvement in productivity workloads,

1:14:33 like kind of creator-focused stuff,

1:14:35 and in some science workloads it did even better

1:14:37 than that, but for most people it doesn't really make

1:14:40 sense unless you see it as maybe kind of like

1:14:42 a like a budget workstation CPU for folks who

1:14:46 can't afford the a thread ripper and also don't

1:14:49 need the PCI lanes and also don't need the you

1:14:52 know insane memory bandwidth the thread ripper and don't

1:14:55 need the upgrade path to many many many more cores.

1:14:59 Don't need you know registered dims they just can use ECC U dims there's a lot

1:15:04 of compromises using it as a budget workstation

1:15:06 but there is an argument to be made there.

1:15:08 Of course with such a um Sorry excuse

1:15:14 me uh interesting launch naturally the more um

1:15:21 exciting component of it in the community has

1:15:23 been the discourse around AMD's sampling strategy which

1:15:29 You can tell the CPU was not super interesting.

1:15:33 Well can you because some reviewers felt that they were left out.

1:15:40 You know what?

1:15:41 I'm just going to read the thing.

1:15:43 Um In our communications with AMD we were told that they had

1:15:49 limited units and wanted to focus

1:15:52 on developers before sending units to reviewers.

1:15:55 That seems to be that a message that did not quite line up

1:15:59 with their strategy because some very gaming focused

1:16:01 channels like Hardware Unboxed were provided with samples.

1:16:04 This confusion has led some to assume that AMD was

1:16:07 preferentially seeding to friendly reviewers

1:16:10 or even blacklisting certain publications.

1:16:13 TechPowerUp noted that even retail partners had received instructions

1:16:16 specifically to not provide any units to publications for review.

1:16:21 Sourcing review units from retailers is a pretty common practice

1:16:24 and has at times been approved by AMD in the past.

1:16:28 Igor's Lab criticized how this sort of selective

1:16:30 sampling hurts consumers because they don't have

1:16:32 access to the broad amount of data

1:16:34 they usually would to make an informed decision.

1:16:37 Um One of our fellow channels in the industry released

1:16:42 a video stating they believe they've been blacklisted by AMD.

1:16:46 Uh this came from GN who said AMD excluded us

1:16:49 not only from sampling but from information about the announcement.

1:16:54 Um they also noted that they have been moved

1:16:57 to a third-party PR agency rather than communicating with AMD directly.

1:17:02 So, as for our side,

1:17:04 uh we also are communicating with AMD through a third-party agency.

1:17:08 The agency did get in touch uh

1:17:10 and they did answer some technical questions before launch.

1:17:12 They were not timely about it and they did not provide us with a chip.

1:17:17 Um I have been I have in my notes how we got our chip.

1:17:22 It apparently fell off the back of a truck just outside of uh Smash Champs,

1:17:26 um our our affiliated badminton club.

1:17:29 So, that's really fortunate, actually.

1:17:32 Um and in summary, no,

1:17:36 AMD did not blacklist anybody because we didn't get a chip.

1:17:41 The basically this comes down to their sampling strategy was different for

1:17:45 strategy was weird.

1:17:47 What it looks like to me is regional.

1:17:49 So, outside of the North America region, YouTubers seem to have gotten samples.

1:17:55 And then within the North America region,

1:17:57 it looks like they went for more written

1:17:59 media for reasons that are AMD's and AMD's alone.

1:18:05 I have not seen any evidence that AMD is selectively

1:18:08 seeding to publications that are more likely to be favorable.

1:18:13 to you?

1:18:14 Oh, 100%.

1:18:15 So, so one region's office had a strategy

1:18:18 and it didn't necessarily match other regions?

1:18:21 That's what it kind of looks like to me

1:18:23 because obviously we are not blacklisted by AMD.

1:18:26 I mean, we partner with AMD on a very regular basis.

1:18:31 They literally buy $5,000 tech upgrades for you know, our employees' homes.

1:18:36 Like we're we're in constant communication with AMD, but we were told, "Yeah,

1:18:41 we're not we're not seeding this CPU to you." Um So, I don't know, man.

1:18:49 There other than just Hey, big companies do big company things sometimes.

1:18:54 I don't think there's there's too much to read into this one.

1:18:57 Seems like a weird move.

1:18:58 I I'm not like crazy surprised just because I suspect

1:19:02 they probably kind of knew how this news would go.

1:19:06 Um but in general, I would still, you know,

1:19:10 I would still like to see all of the CPUs go to CPU reviewers.

1:19:16 Yes, and I mean, but it's all it's never even been a thing.

1:19:20 Like think back to like how Intel has done their seeding for a lot

1:19:23 of their like series launches where they sent like this chip and this chip.

1:19:27 And sometimes it really seems like like self-owning.

1:19:29 Like remember when they launched Core Ultra on the desktop?

1:19:32 And they sent us like the the worst ones.

1:19:34 I sure do.

1:19:35 And we're just like, "Hey, do you want to sell these or not?

1:19:39 Because these ones are clearly the cool ones and we literally can't put

1:19:42 them on our benchmark charts because y'all didn't seed them to us, you know?"

1:19:46 super weird.

1:19:48 Like man, I don't know, man.

1:19:48 Big companies do big company like dumb stuff all the time and um Now,

1:19:56 maybe I'm just maybe I'm just used to it.

1:20:02 [laughter]

1:20:00 Maybe.

1:20:01 It It's This This does seem like I don't know, X3D specifically

1:20:10 Yeah.

1:20:09 has like a very alluring pull to the to the tech enthusiast crowd.

1:20:15 I feel like not including it to video or written reviewers is a little bit odd.

1:20:22 And again, I understand that this chip is also a little bit odd.

1:20:28 Yeah.

1:20:27 So, like maybe it's fine, but just with the naming it

1:20:31 Yeah.

1:20:31 If I was AMD, I'll be honest with you.

1:20:32 Knowing what I know about this chip, I might have seeded it to like

1:20:36 I might have just not done it.

1:20:38 Wendell and Phronix and then just like not bothered outside of that.

1:20:44 Yeah.

1:20:44 Cuz I cuz I I I might be I

1:20:46 might be interested in the perspective of someone who's,

1:20:49 you know, more attuned to the to the the enterprise space.

1:20:53 And then someone who's like hyper attuned

1:20:55 to like the Linux and and like scientific space.

1:20:58 And then realistically, yeah,

1:21:00 it's X3D and you're going to you're going to you're

1:21:04 going to throw that in the marketing because marketers

1:21:06 got to market and they're going to want to sell

1:21:08 it to gamers because that's how big company do things.

1:21:11 But in terms of like caring about gaming outlets making a review of it,

1:21:15 I probably have like zero zero cares.

1:21:19 Yeah.

1:21:20 I mean, based on the benchmarking that happened, it's like Yeah,

1:21:25 I would probably agree with you if they knew what was going on there.

1:21:28 Yeah, and I mean, obviously a company like AMD

1:21:30 knows what their chip is before they release it.

1:21:33 Which actually I shouldn't even say.

1:21:34 Sometimes you do Sometimes you really do have

1:21:36 brands tell you you're They're like, "Oh, hey,

1:21:39 so do you love it?" And you're kind of like "No,

1:21:42 it's slow and expensive." And they're like, "What?"

1:21:45 It's it's [sighs] fascinating.

1:21:48 To me, that's just marketing PR teams being disconnected from technical.

1:21:54 It's got to be.

1:21:55 That's usually the the understanding for me.

1:21:57 Cuz like you remember the whole uh back plate thing?

1:22:00 Was it Gigabyte?

1:22:01 I think it was Gigabyte.

1:22:02 was Gigabyte with that GPU.

1:22:03 And the and the the board was like,

1:22:05 "How could you?" And then the technical people were like, "Yeah, we knew."

1:22:10 Yeah.

1:22:10 We didn't tell them that.

1:22:11 They just put that in the marketing.

1:22:13 Yeah, when they had like some kind

1:22:14 of misleading marketing on their product page.

1:22:17 said their copper back plate cooled the GPU by 3°.

1:22:21 And it turns out that just having no back plate also cooled it by 3°.

1:22:26 It's just their old backplate warmed the card by 3° cuz it was so bad.

1:22:31 Um so it was it was yeah, anyways, whatever.

1:22:36 You know what's not bad though?

1:22:39 LTT Tools casually getting reviews on like PC Gamer.

1:22:45 What the heck?

1:22:46 This came out of nowhere for me.

1:22:48 What?

1:22:50 Right?

1:22:50 PC Gamer, do they have they reviewed any other tools?

1:22:53 I don't know.

1:22:54 LTT Ratcheting Screwdriver and Precision Pro Multi-bit Screwdriver Review.

1:22:59 Serious Tools by Jacob Ridley, published not on April 1st,

1:23:03 but actually on April the 8th.

1:23:05 So this was a little

1:23:07 sweet.

1:23:06 Yeah, this was a little while ago, but I just thought this was pretty cool

1:23:10 and it actually included an anecdote about an experience.

1:23:15 I don't remember meeting Jacob,

1:23:17 but uh apparently we've we've at least crossed paths at some point

1:23:22 because um apparently this was this was his his expectation from me.

1:23:30 I wasn't sure what to expect upon opening the YouTuber branded boxes.

1:23:35 Having once upon a time been at the same booth at a show as Linus,

1:23:39 as he was loudly disagreeing with someone about quality control,

1:23:42 I had a pretty good feeling about

1:23:44 the quality of the screwdrivers before they arrived.

1:23:47 That was a good assumption too, as now they're in front of me.

1:23:50 They feel sturdy and well put together.

1:23:53 That's funny.

1:23:54 That's pretty good.

1:23:55 It was it's an interesting paragraph that really highlights, I think,

1:24:00 why sometimes we do take what feels like a disproportionate

1:24:04 amount of flak sometimes when we make a mistake because Yeah.

1:24:08 that's what we do is we we point out things that are not good enough.

1:24:12 And when our job is to point out things that are not good enough for a living,

1:24:16 then people expect us to do the same

1:24:18 bloody thing internally and it's uh it's funny

1:24:21 because sometimes it would be easy to think

1:24:25 about something like that and go you know, oh, that's that's too much pressure.

1:24:29 I wouldn't want to work somewhere like that.

1:24:31 But, you know what's cool?

1:24:34 Is I think our team actually embraces it in like a big way.

1:24:39 Sorry, I'm not laughing at you.

1:24:41 Um yeah, no, I think so.

1:24:42 I think they do.

1:24:43 Sometimes our product development timelines are also really long,

1:24:47 but this is probably part of why.

1:24:50 Yeah.

1:24:50 part of why.

1:24:51 Oh, dude.

1:24:53 Dude.

1:24:55 Dude.

1:24:55 There's a product coming.

1:24:57 The battery bank?

1:24:59 No.

1:24:59 Okay.

1:25:01 Yeah.

1:25:00 Cuz I you you you put it in a video, you don't have to be I tried the prototype.

1:25:05 I've no idea what he's talking about.

1:25:07 Yeah, you do.

1:25:08 I do?

1:25:09 It's the one.

1:25:11 Come on, man.

1:25:14 Really?

1:25:13 I tried the prototype.

1:25:15 It[ __] slaps.

1:25:19 Dude.

1:25:21 It's crazy.

1:25:22 Oh, that one.

1:25:23 Oh, yeah.

1:25:24 You're that hyped about it.

1:25:26 Dude.

1:25:27 Okay.

1:25:27 It's nuts.

1:25:29 Hell yeah.

1:25:29 I want to quadruple the order.

1:25:30 Like, dude.

1:25:32 Really?

1:25:32 Dude.

1:25:32 I don't even know what the quantity was.

1:25:34 I want to quadruple the order.

1:25:35 me just cuz I I I I I feel like I can't spoil it, but there's there's

1:25:39 Oh, we can't say it.

1:25:40 It's too early.

1:25:41 reasons that he's really excited, I'm really excited.

1:25:45 And did you Did you try it?

1:25:46 Did you try it?

1:25:48 No.

1:25:48 No, no, I'm talking to him.

1:25:49 That guy Yeah, I know he No, no comment.

1:25:51 No comment.

1:25:52 No, but did you try it?

1:25:54 I don't know if I have one or not.

1:25:55 No, you don't have one.

1:25:56 Okay.

1:25:57 You might be thinking of something else.

1:25:59 There's only one.

1:26:00 So, nobody has one except someone.

1:26:02 Then, no.

1:26:03 Okay.

1:26:03 Okay.

1:26:03 No, don't worry about it.

1:26:04 Forget Forget about Dan.

1:26:05 Forget about Dan.

1:26:06 I have not.

1:26:06 We'll never forget about Dan.

1:26:07 We love Dan, but just In this context?

1:26:09 In this Yeah, for for now.

1:26:11 For now.

1:26:13 It's um Dude.

1:26:15 I'm I'm very happy to hear that for a huge variety of reasons.

1:26:19 Yeah.

1:26:19 Yeah.

1:26:19 And I'll leave it there.

1:26:20 Uh anyway, the point is we have a really passionate

1:26:22 team and we and we kind of we embrace those challenges.

1:26:25 Anyway, for that is like it's tight.

1:26:29 Yeah.

1:26:29 to be crazy.

1:26:30 Yeah.

1:26:30 Knock on wood.

1:26:31 Knock on wood.

1:26:31 Yeah.

1:26:33 Yeah.

1:26:32 Um anyway, the PC Gamer review I I thought it was pretty fair.

1:26:36 Um

1:26:37 Cool.

1:26:36 I think there was Yeah, I think there was like one thing that I I was like,

1:26:40 "Oh, I think he might have kind of overlooked

1:26:41 that." But it was like super super minor.

1:26:44 Um and I thought they Yeah, they thought they did a pretty good job.

1:26:47 They compared it to sort of, you know,

1:26:48 obvious things like uh the iFixit Protect Toolkit.

1:26:52 Um Anyway, thanks Jacob for taking the time.

1:26:56 Sweet.

1:26:56 Appreciate you.

1:26:59 Uh what do we want to talk about next?

1:27:00 We're supposed to do another topic.

1:27:02 It is not the crowbar hammer and guys, that is a Never happening.

1:27:05 That is a never happening situation.

1:27:07 Oh, yeah.

1:27:08 Never happening.

1:27:10 Uh do do do do do do every SK Hynix employee could I think that's a bold could,

1:27:19 but could rece It might happen.

1:27:21 Uh could receive $477,000 bonuses this year.

1:27:26 Woo!

1:27:27 Almost 900,000 next year.

1:27:28 Apparently, 35,000 workers are set out to benefit from a share

1:27:34 of 169 billion in projected operating profit for the year.

1:27:40 SK Hynix agreed last September to remove

1:27:42 its previous bonus caps, hilarious timing, and allocate 10% of annual operating

1:27:47 profit directly to employees as performance bonuses.

1:27:50 With analysts forecasting around 250 trillion won or 169 billion,

1:27:57 I'm assuming US dollars, in operating profit for 2026,

1:28:01 that works out to roughly the previously mentioned

1:28:04 $477,000 per employee across its 35,000 person workforce.

1:28:09 On top of the $95,000 in profit sharing already paid out in February.

1:28:15 If profits keep climbing,

1:28:16 bonuses could hit nearly $900,000 per person next year.

1:28:22 Woo!

1:28:24 The AI boom The AI boom is driving all this.

1:28:27 Demand for HBM memory chips used in AI

1:28:29 accelerators has sent memory prices through record highs,

1:28:32 and SK Hynix is the dominant supplier.

1:28:34 The company's transparent bonus formula has

1:28:37 become a recruiting weapon against Samsung,

1:28:40 which is now facing its own crisis with over So,

1:28:43 this is the thing that I thought

1:28:44 we were originally talking about for some reason,

1:28:46 which I was which is why I said maybe.

1:28:48 I guess the previous stuff is pretty locked in.

1:28:50 The maybe stuff is is is this.

1:28:51 So, sorry.

1:28:52 I I I I had the wrong reaction there.

1:28:55 Samsung's union uh whoa whoa whoa what's going on?

1:28:59 Samsung union members

1:29:00 are demanding a similar deal

1:29:03 with a strike.

1:29:05 A strike date set for May 21st.

1:29:07 That's crazy.

1:29:09 A strike right now could seriously hurt earning potential.

1:29:13 This is This is a very interesting to watch.

1:29:16 Samsung's union is pushing for 15% of operating profit,

1:29:20 pointing out that their bonuses currently amount to less

1:29:23 than 30% of what uh comparable SK Hynix workers receive.

1:29:28 Samsung management countered with 10%, which the union rejected.

1:29:33 Dude, this is This is crazy to watch.

1:29:34 This is like This is some peak-tier

1:29:38 not

1:29:38 negotiating.

1:29:38 Like, remember when we were talking about everything that was going

1:29:41 on with like SAG-AFTRA and and like and in Holly in Hollywood,

1:29:45 you know, down south,

1:29:46 and I was talking about like kind of, you know, bold strategy.

1:29:50 Cotton, let's see how it works out for them

1:29:51 because they were striking at a time when a lot

1:29:55 of studios were actually pairing back their productions and uh

1:30:00 losing money on a lot of big tentpole projects.

1:30:02 And like

1:30:03 This is the hard opposite of that scenario.

1:30:06 This is the timing you want.

1:30:08 Yeah.

1:30:08 Yeah.

1:30:08 You're a specialized worker in something that is absolutely b- b- b- b- banging.

1:30:16 There is a place making record profits

1:30:19 that could definitely hire you in uh Yeah.

1:30:24 They could could very easily definitely hire you.

1:30:26 And I And I think they are

1:30:28 Yeah, they know they've been apparently taking advantage

1:30:31 of this of this situation right now because from an SK Hynix standpoint,

1:30:38 I can see why why not.

1:30:40 Because you're going to allocate 10% of your annual operating profit.

1:30:45 So, what do you care as like

1:30:48 If the If the bubble pops

1:30:50 I just mean what do you care at the management

1:30:51 level if that 10% is allocated across another thousand people?

1:30:56 You don't You don't give a[ __] Right?

1:30:57 Because no

1:30:58 Right?

1:30:58 Because no one's going to be complaining because as long as the profits go up,

1:31:02 their next bonus check will be bigger anyway.

1:31:04 to be so freaking monstrous said if they spread it across more people,

1:31:08 they could basically just bleed Samsung dry.

1:31:11 Yeah, that's wild.

1:31:13 Woo!

1:31:14 Wild.

1:31:16 Woo!

1:31:18 It's going to This This is going to be This is going to be an interesting one.

1:31:26 Yeah.

1:31:26 Um and you know, to to your point that I think you were getting into, again,

1:31:30 SK Hynix has nothing to lose here because

1:31:32 if the bonus quantity is derived from operating profit,

1:31:36 then when the bust inevitably happens

1:31:38 other end of this, it just auto scales down.

1:31:40 It auto scales down.

1:31:42 Cuz it's still 10% of annual operating profit,

1:31:44 but if they're just not profiting as much, then it just goes down.

1:31:47 So, like realistically,

1:31:50 the employees are winning super hard when the company's winning super hard.

1:31:52 And then when the company isn't super winning super hard,

1:31:54 it'll just it'll automatically kind of correct itself.

1:31:57 You don't have to have rough conversations with people

1:32:00 about how their wages are going to go down.

1:32:02 It's just Well, we sold less RAM, so

1:32:06 Yeah.

1:32:06 There it goes.

1:32:07 Dude, it's it's crazy the kind of scale that these companies work on.

1:32:11 Oh, yeah.

1:32:12 [snorts] Like the fact that they allocate only 10%

1:32:15 of their annual operating profit to to like performance bonuses.

1:32:20 That's like that's crazy.

1:32:22 Like ratio-wise, we are way above that for overall like

1:32:27 how much we allocate of our operating profit to to compensation.

1:32:31 And yet we can't

1:32:31 to compensation though.

1:32:33 No, it is.

1:32:33 It's the bonus.

1:32:33 It's just performance bonuses.

1:32:36 Oh, but the performance bonuses are like the bulk of their comp now.

1:32:39 It's It like it's it's crazy.

1:32:40 I was looking at the numbers.

1:32:41 Yeah, yeah.

1:32:42 So like the fact that the fact that they

1:32:45 have relatively only that amount allocated to employee compensation.

1:32:53 That's not true though.

1:32:54 That's what I'm saying.

1:32:55 Oh, it's a little more, basically is is what it amounts to.

1:32:58 So like that and a little more allocated.

1:33:02 And they're able to pay out base salary plus $477,000 per employee.

1:33:09 Like the amount of money that memory

1:33:13 manufacturing is making right now is flipping Yeah, yeah.

1:33:21 Flipping insane.

1:33:23 And sorry, sorry, sorry.

1:33:24 That last number was slightly wrong.

1:33:26 It's actually over 500,000 because that 477,000 was on top of 95,000 already.

1:33:31 Like It's It's These wafers, right?

1:33:39 If you've If you got the fab license to print money, Luke.

1:33:42 Yeah, imagine getting a like you're you're just out of school

1:33:45 and you get a job at one of these companies right now.

1:33:48 [laughter] [gasps]

1:33:50 That's it.

1:33:51 I'm moving to Seoul.

1:33:53 See you later.

1:33:54 Hey guys, I can do something.

1:33:56 I swear.

1:33:58 I I could I could I could do PR.

1:34:00 I could do PR for SK Hynix.

1:34:01 I could be I could be their video guy.

1:34:04 Uh okay, sure.

1:34:06 Yeah.

1:34:06 I don't know about PR.

1:34:09 [laughter] YEAH, NO.

1:34:11 YOU CAN do media.

1:34:14 [laughter] We could change our company.

1:34:14 Hey, we could do what that shoe company did.

1:34:17 We raise a bunch of money and we do we do Rod's idea, Linus Memory Group.

1:34:22 [laughter]

1:34:22 There you go.

1:34:23 Yeah.

1:34:23 There you go.

1:34:24 We'll we'll build a fab.

1:34:24 Just give me a small loan of a billion dollars

1:34:27 and then we'll we'll we'll go we'll build a memory fab.

1:34:29 We got this.

1:34:30 Well, isn't their whole thing they're not even building the fab?

1:34:32 They're just like acquiring the hardware for you.

1:34:34 So, if you're building a fab and you need a bunch of GPUs,

1:34:36 they will like get it for you.

1:34:39 company?

1:34:39 Yeah, I think that was their strategy.

1:34:40 I think they're building I think they want to build data

1:34:42 centers and then like just lease access to them like everyone else.

1:34:47 Okay.

1:34:46 Have they crashed yet?

1:34:48 Is that over?

1:34:48 Who knows?

1:34:50 Was it?

1:34:51 Hold on here.

1:34:52 They even called them Alberts.

1:34:53 Oh, yeah.

1:34:55 Oh, yeah.

1:34:55 Okay.

1:34:56 So, HERE WAS THE THING.

1:35:01 SO, YEAH, THEY SPIKED TO $17 and they're all the way down to seven now.

1:35:06 That's going to keep going.

1:35:08 That this is not financial advice, but that's going to that's going to keep

1:35:12 going in that direction in case anyone was wondering.

1:35:16 So, there's like one stock that makes any amount of sense on the stock market?

1:35:21 Yeah, I'm going for that's going to be the one [laughter]

1:35:24 that actually performs according to its its basic fundamentals.

1:35:28 I believe you.

1:35:30 Not financial advice.

1:35:31 Not financial advice.

1:35:32 advice.

1:35:33 Thank you very much.

1:35:34 Dan, don't think I don't see what you type in chat.

1:35:37 What is it apart from a bull?

1:35:38 It goes Linus is a bear confirmed.

1:35:40 Well, you're you're you're saying that it's going down.

1:35:42 Yeah, don't think I don't know what that means though.

1:35:46 [laughter] Just because I use a double entendre,

1:35:47 doesn't mean that it's not true financially.

1:35:52 [laughter] Not not financial advice.

1:35:53 Not employment advice either.

1:35:55 Call call your boss a bear.

1:36:01 [laughter] You're too skinny.

1:36:06 Dude, I weigh so much now.

1:36:07 God.

1:36:08 No, I definitely don't have the hair.

1:36:10 But I I I like weigh a lot now.

1:36:13 I'm 174 lb now.

1:36:15 Take creatine way more.

1:36:16 Take more crea- I don't want to weigh more than this.

1:36:18 Way more.

1:36:19 Way more.

1:36:19 No, I don't want to weigh more than this.

1:36:22 Mass maxing Linus.

1:36:23 No, I don't we don't need that.

1:36:25 Thighs as thick as anything.

1:36:28 Yeah.

1:36:28 Tree trunk Linus.

1:36:30 thighs bigger than her or not?

1:36:32 Bigger than Taylor Swift?

1:36:33 No, I don't Think of what you want to win this or no?

1:36:36 I don't It's not a competition.

1:36:37 Honestly, I That's quitter energy.

1:36:38 [laughter]

1:36:39 be.

1:36:39 It's not a competition.

1:36:41 Linus watermelon crushing tips.

1:36:45 Yeah.

1:36:45 That should be next year's April Fools is you relaunch

1:36:48 the only fans and it's just videos of you crushing watermelons.

1:36:52 Leggings for men.

1:36:56 LEGGINGS THAT HAVE LIKE PADDED like five foot four areas.

1:37:00 They they're like for normal people like they

1:37:03 would not fit around the waist at all.

1:37:05 We'd have to create like a low friction space age material between

1:37:09 the thighs so that they don't wear out from all the like what I was Yeah.

1:37:12 Yeah.

1:37:12 Yeah.

1:37:12 All right, I'm into it.

1:37:14 Oh, I thought you meant padding just so that when you're

1:37:15 crushing watermelons like you know it's it doesn't hurt, you know.

1:37:18 It wouldn't hurt though.

1:37:19 Oh, sorry.

1:37:20 I Okay, we were not I understand what you're saying now.

1:37:22 We were not talking about the same thing.

1:37:23 Yeah, okay.

1:37:23 You know you know what like elementary school you had those planners

1:37:26 with the cover that went like zip zip when you ran your nails over it?

1:37:29 Put one of those on in the inside of each thigh so that when you walk it's like

1:37:35 Dude, that would be the like most 90s parachute pants like vibe.

1:37:39 Put little 3Ds on them too.

1:37:41 Just your face going back and forth.

1:37:43 That'd be great.

1:37:45 Write that down.

1:37:45 Write that down.

1:37:46 No, we're not writing any of this down.

1:37:47 that much [laughter] though.

1:37:48 And then in a in a lot of cases you going to have to you lose it afterwards.

1:37:51 All right.

1:37:52 You should take it anyways.

1:37:52 All right.

1:37:53 All right.

1:37:53 You should take it.

1:37:53 You'll do better at badminton.

1:37:55 And brain.

1:37:55 also help your brain.

1:37:57 Not medical advice.

1:37:58 What are you saying?

1:37:59 Not medical advice.

1:38:01 Yeah.

1:38:03 It's actually true.

1:38:04 I don't.

1:40:22 Uh do do do Let's see here.

1:40:25 Pick the rap.

1:40:26 Pick the rap.

1:40:27 Oh, yeah, sure.

1:40:29 Yes.

1:40:28 Uh LTT rap.

1:40:30 A month ago, we posted a video about TikTok hacks and one

1:40:33 of the hacks was uh that we looked at was from user

1:40:37 raptech 26994 uh who made a rap about how to use

1:40:44 uh utilman to uh log in to a locked Windows user account.

1:40:48 Well, he's back and this time he has one about our merch.

1:40:52 Okay, I'm not going to play the whole thing just

1:40:54 because like I want you guys to watch the whole thing.

1:40:57 Yep.

1:40:57 So, I'm only going to play a little bit of it.

1:40:59 Have you seen this?

1:41:00 No, I haven't.

1:41:02 Oh.

1:41:02 But I'm giving him a view right now anyways.

1:41:04 Oh my god.

1:41:06 Okay, here we go.

1:41:06 You ready?

1:41:07 Yeah, see if this works.

1:41:09 Yes.

1:41:09 raptech PC You know what?

1:41:11 I love the style.

1:41:12 guilty of too much charisma Hey, Linus said I got too much charisma on site.

1:41:17 So, he sent [music] me all the [singing] gear.

1:41:19 Now, we going to do [laughter] it right.

1:41:22 and build another level.

1:41:24 No slipping, no slipping [music] every bit of his apparel.

1:41:27 Hey, every side [laughter] for whatever they running [clears throat]

1:41:36 [gasps and laughter] Is that amazing or what?

1:41:38 It's up on YouTube shorts.

1:41:39 Yeah, No Keys posting it in the chat like How Luke?

1:41:47 Do you think even with his help I could ever be cool?

1:41:51 [laughter] What Dan?

1:41:54 Say it.

1:41:55 somebody posted something funny in chat.

1:41:56 It's [laughter] I'm sure they did.

1:41:58 He might have enough aura that while you were with him and with his help Yeah.

1:42:06 be able to pull it off.

1:42:07 But I feel like once he's removed from the scenario you

1:42:09 are yet again not cool even if he received your help.

1:42:12 So basically I'm like

1:42:13 received his help.

1:42:14 With training I could be possy grade cool.

1:42:17 I think so.

1:42:18 Okay.

1:42:18 I think so.

1:42:21 [sighs] Well, that's fine.

1:42:22 I'm just glad that he likes the product and um I I am

1:42:28 I I am my life is richer for having watched this video earlier today.

1:42:33 [laughter] You guys got you guys got to hear the rest of it.

1:42:37 It it doesn't go downhill from there.

1:42:40 That's that's what I'll say.

1:42:42 Uh go go check it out.

1:42:44 Rap Tech 269 for [laughter] Speaking of hopefully not going downhill,

1:42:49 Apple names new chief executive to replace Tim Cook.

1:42:53 Apple has announced that Tim Cook will step down as CEO on September 1st,

1:42:56 2026 and John Ternus,

1:42:59 the company's senior vice president of hardware engineering since 2021,

1:43:04 will be taking over.

1:43:05 Cook will move to executive chairman.

1:43:08 The transition was unanimously approved by the board and follows

1:43:12 that uh what Apple describes as a long-term succession plan.

1:43:16 Uh Ternus has been at Apple since 2001, working under both Steve Jobs and Cook.

1:43:23 He's been the guy behind the hardware side of iPad, AirPods,

1:43:27 and recent iPhones uh and has taken on an increasingly

1:43:31 visible role at Apple events in recent years.

1:43:35 At 50, he's roughly the same age Cook was when he took over

1:43:39 in 2021 and roughly 1/10 of the age of an average world leader.

1:43:44 Under Cook's 15-year run,

1:43:46 Apple went from a $350 billion company to a $4 trillion one,

1:43:51 launched Apple Watch, AirPods, Apple Silicon,

1:43:53 Vision Pro, and built out the services business.

1:43:56 The biggest challenge waiting for Turnus is

1:43:59 widely seen as fixing Apple's struggling AI strategy,

1:44:03 uh which has lagged behind competitors.

1:44:06 Interesting.

1:44:08 I don't agree with that at all.

1:44:10 Yeah.

1:44:11 I think they're actually probably doing like the smartest move in the room,

1:44:16 but we'll see how it goes.

1:44:18 I I know a bunch of people have been saying like,

1:44:19 "Oh, oh, but if it like if if someone figures it out,

1:44:22 they're going to be so far behind." And it's like, I don't even think so.

1:44:26 With with the rate at which models are being open-sourced and

1:44:30 Honestly, how good Apple's hardware is for running it?

1:44:33 That, too.

1:44:34 And the rate at which people seem

1:44:36 to be very happy to just jump companies constantly.

1:44:39 Like the the the the relationship with AI

1:44:42 companies and their employees is very very tenuous.

1:44:45 They're just kind of bouncing around all over the place.

1:44:47 If Apple wants to turn it on, I think they absolutely can right now.

1:44:52 Um and I don't think they will right

1:44:55 now and I don't think they should right now.

1:44:57 I think they are wisely waiting out this insane storm of spending,

1:45:02 keeping their insane amounts of cash that they have,

1:45:05 um instead of just blowing it all.

1:45:08 And then when the timing is right,

1:45:10 maybe they'll step in or maybe they'll have a different solution.

1:45:14 Yeah.

1:45:13 Maybe they'll get paid money to to use someone

1:45:16 else's model as like an advertising thing or something.

1:45:19 they lost the you know, search engine war, browser war, whatever.

1:45:23 Like

1:45:24 Yeah.

1:45:24 Like maybe they'll find some way to make it work out in their favor, anyways.

1:45:27 That does tend to be the Apple way.

1:45:31 Yeah.

1:45:30 Don't be first, just be Apple.

1:45:33 Yeah.

1:45:33 So, I it doesn't feel like an error to me.

1:45:36 It also like it would feel like an error if Google wasn't doing it.

1:45:41 Yeah.

1:45:40 But, it does not feel like an error that Apple isn't doing it.

1:45:44 Yeah.

1:45:45 I[ __] with that.

1:45:47 Yeah.

1:45:47 Um we actually uh this was one of those ones where you

1:45:50 know how we've talked about needing to be more agile as a company

1:45:55 in our in our video production.

1:45:58 Yeah.

1:45:56 Uh this is one that um I I sent uh this Okay, hold on.

1:46:01 We're going to have to we're going to have to back up a little bit.

1:46:03 Um over on Floatplane, I was reading through one of uh the reading through

1:46:09 the comments on one of the exclusives that we did.

1:46:11 So, there's a video where uh we have this kind of series, I guess,

1:46:14 now cuz I've done it a couple times where I interview uh

1:46:19 other executives or other leaders here at the company and, you know,

1:46:22 sort of have a business meeting on

1:46:25 camera, just like Luke and I do on Wen Show every week for you guys,

1:46:28 but with different people.

1:46:30 And it was actually uh a commenter who was talking about how um

1:46:35 Oh, I like this comment.

1:46:36 I know what one you're talking about, actually.

1:46:38 You know, James and I talked about being kind of a big ship these days,

1:46:43 and and that being a real challenge for us because we've

1:46:46 lost some of the agility that we had in the past.

1:46:50 And Biohazard 4524 says to keep James' analogy

1:46:55 of them being a big ship that turns slowly,

1:46:57 um what I think they would love is to be more like an aircraft carrier.

1:47:02 Yes, the massive ship turns slowly,

1:47:03 but you can launch fast craft and helicopters to go try that new thing,

1:47:07 to be a platform to make quick things doable without going under.

1:47:10 And I actually immediately screenshotted this and posted this in the executive

1:47:15 chat and basically went this is what we need to do.

1:47:18 We can't stop being a bigger ship than YouTube channels

1:47:22 that are literally one person or two people or even five people.

1:47:26 We were more agile when when we were, you know, a dozen people.

1:47:31 And that's just inherent.

1:47:33 There's more There's There's more people who need to know.

1:47:37 Um there's more people who need to who need to, you know, approve things.

1:47:41 It's

1:47:41 I have had some conversations recently where we'll we'll talk about like,

1:47:45 "Okay, we could do XYZ thing." And the response will be like, "Yeah,

1:47:48 but then we're going to have to do

1:47:50 this and that and this and that and this and that." And I've

1:47:54 I've been trying out a response of just like,

1:47:56 "What if we just didn't?" And it's

1:47:59 it's kind of fun watching people's brain explode.

1:48:02 And so, um so basically I was like, "Okay,

1:48:06 but we have to find a way to be more agile, to get things done quickly,

1:48:12 and and circumvent the process when it's necessary." And uh this Tim Cook

1:48:18 retirement announcement is actually something that we

1:48:21 we went aircraft carrier mode on.

1:48:23 So, we we kept the ship going in the direction that it's going,

1:48:28 and a small team of one of the relatively new writers uh on the team,

1:48:33 uh his name's Shawn,

1:48:35 and he put together like sort of some key milestones from uh Cook's

1:48:39 career and like kind of a draft of what a script might look like.

1:48:43 And then I I sat on the plane on the way back from the event earlier this week,

1:48:48 and I banged out a script.

1:48:50 We shot it the morning I got back in.

1:48:52 It was edited today.

1:48:53 It's I'm going to review it tonight, and it goes up I think this weekend.

1:48:57 Um and so we're we need to start doing a better job of that.

1:49:02 And the only way to start doing a better job

1:49:04 of it is to start doing a better job of it.

1:49:07 Just[ __] do it.

1:49:09 And so we're um we're putting it in action already,

1:49:12 and I just I This was just such a great example.

1:49:15 I don't remember how we got on this topic even,

1:49:16 but this was such a great example of the importance

1:49:19 of community feedback in what we're doing and how

1:49:23 dialed in and it's not just me who's who's

1:49:25 reading this stuff and who's engaging with you guys.

1:49:29 It's It's lots of people here at the company who

1:49:32 just care and just want to make a better product.

1:49:34 Whether that product is a shirt or whether that product is

1:49:38 a video or whether it's a streaming platform or whether it's hey,

1:49:41 why don't we transition into another topic here and let's have

1:49:44 a look at some of the sick content that's been posted on lttlabs.com.

1:49:49 Ah, yeah.

1:49:50 Check this out.

1:49:51 Dude, Nick and Steven working on some pretty sick freaking content.

1:49:57 This is I bought

1:49:59 This is such an interesting question that when Intel announced this, I was like,

1:50:04 oh yeah, I wonder how much this helps.

1:50:06 I wish someone would like look into that.

1:50:09 And then little did I know

1:50:11 ask us.

1:50:12 Little did I know somebody was doing it and that somebody was apparently me.

1:50:17 Thank you labs team.

1:50:19 Um So the the long and short of it is that Intel has some some tools that can

1:50:27 that can help their especially their new Core Ultra

1:50:30 200 series processors perform apparently quite a bit better.

1:50:36 And so there's there's actually a few different optimizations.

1:50:39 Intel Extreme Tuning Utility or XTU, Intel Application Optimizer,

1:50:43 and then the new Intel Binary Optimization Tool or I bought.

1:50:48 And pretty much you go in here, you tweak all your stuff,

1:50:53 they show you like how to enable it, and then boom.

1:50:57 Here is the improvement in performance that you

1:50:59 can get with a 200 S series processor.

1:51:02 So these are the the newer ones with boost off and with boost on.

1:51:08 What exact chip did we use is the test bench but test bench.

1:51:11 Where is it?

1:51:14 Yeah, I can't remember off the top of my head either.

1:51:16 Uh changes the PL1 profiles.

1:51:18 It Which chip is it?

1:51:19 Okay, well, this is something we might have uh overlooked a little bit.

1:51:22 Oh, no, no, no, here it is.

1:51:23 Here it is.

1:51:24 So, with the 285K Oh, no, sorry, this is uh not the new plus one.

1:51:27 So, this is the older um 285K, which gets a pretty substantial boost actually

1:51:35 across a pretty wide variety of games,

1:51:38 anywhere from like 2.5% to over 4%.

1:51:42 And that's in 1% lows.

1:51:45 So, that's pretty cool.

1:51:46 And then with the new plus, the new 270K plus, we actually got way less.

1:51:53 Yeah.

1:51:52 That is pretty fascinating.

1:51:55 So, yeah, guys, go check out that article.

1:51:57 And and that's just one of the uh of the cool things that went up this week.

1:52:03 Uh all right, did this did the CMF 20361 go up not this week?

1:52:07 Is Oh, they must have just I I must have just come across it.

1:52:09 No, no, no.

1:52:10 Was that That one was 2 weeks ago.

1:52:11 Oh, I thought you were talking about the uh the phone brightness one.

1:52:14 No, no, no, that one we talked about last week,

1:52:16 but this one this one uh slipped my notice.

1:52:19 So, this is talking about like color on Apple's new displays.

1:52:22 Really, really, really cool article as well.

1:52:23 I didn't see it until this week.

1:52:25 So, I'm I'm getting to the point, man,

1:52:26 where I just like I'm like chilling and waiting

1:52:30 for LTT Labs to release a new article.

1:52:32 I'm like, "Oh, that's interesting." that you've been I find them on Reddit.

1:52:36 without uh-huh.

1:52:39 [laughter] No one will ever go to the damn website by itself.

1:52:41 No, they will.

1:52:42 They will.

1:52:42 Be optimistic, Luke.

1:52:44 Hey, hey, you got to have Okay, we still I have to I have to point this out.

1:52:48 You have to understand, we still have people asking us like,

1:52:51 "When are you guys going to have an RSS feed?" It's It's right here.

1:52:56 It's It's right here.

1:52:58 It's also It's also It's also right here.

1:53:04 It's also a just Hold on, just in case just in case.

1:53:08 Hold on, I got to go to the bottom.

1:53:09 It's It's also right here.

1:53:13 And if you click on here, it's everywhere.

1:53:15 It's We can't We can't put it in more play We get People go

1:53:20 out of their way to email us asking when we're going to have these things,

1:53:27 and they're Please use them.

1:53:30 Yeah, yeah, use them.

1:53:31 It's good It's good stuff.

1:53:32 Come on.

1:53:33 Heck, yeah.

1:53:34 Way to go, LMG Labs.

1:53:35 Love to see it.

1:53:37 All right.

1:53:38 What else we got?

1:53:39 Oh, this is cool.

1:53:42 Uh I I actually Hmm.

1:53:44 Man, I'm on the fence now,

1:53:45 cuz I knew you'd be excited about that whole bringing bringing

1:53:49 uh cutting-edge models on prem uh with like the Gemini hardware appliance.

1:53:55 Um but I can also see why you picked this one for one of your headlines.

1:53:59 YouTube is opening up its AI-powered

1:54:02 likeness detection tool to all of Hollywood.

1:54:05 Actors, musicians, athletes,

1:54:07 and the talent agencies and management

1:54:09 companies that represent them will be able

1:54:11 to use this tool that works kind of like Content ID, except for faces.

1:54:16 Scanning the platform for AI-generated deepfakes of enrolled individuals,

1:54:21 and then letting them review and request removal.

1:54:24 It is free, opt-in, and works even if the person doesn't have a YouTube channel.

1:54:30 The tool's been in a phased rollout since actually late 2024,

1:54:33 starting with CAA clients, and then expanding to about 5,000 last fall,

1:54:37 then to politicians and to journalists in March.

1:54:40 The entertainment industry is the biggest expansion yet,

1:54:42 with CAA, UTA, WME, and Untitled Management already on board.

1:54:48 YouTube says that enrollment data is only used for detection,

1:54:51 and is not used to train Google's AI models.

1:54:55 Flagged videos are reviewed individually, and content that falls under parody,

1:54:58 satire, or commentary may stay up.

1:55:01 The expansion comes after Sora after the Sora launch last fall

1:55:04 flooded the internet with deep fakes of celebrities and dead public figures,

1:55:07 making the need for this kind of tool kind of hard to argue against.

1:55:12 It's cool that YouTube's doing it.

1:55:14 That's that's sweet.

1:55:15 And for free, that's awesome.

1:55:17 YouTube is not perfect.

1:55:19 I call them out in public and in private on a pretty regular basis.

1:55:25 However, however, however.

1:55:29 Let's look at all the other large video platforms.

1:55:34 I I know I've said it on WAN Show before, but this is what I keep going back to.

1:55:38 TikTok.

1:55:38 Meta.

1:55:40 Dude, relatively speaking,

1:55:44 they're awesome.

1:55:45 They've been

1:55:46 a company to be on top as well, for as long as not not only around,

1:55:52 but as big and on top for as long as they have been, I am very surprised.

1:55:59 They don't seem way worse and way more corrupt than they are.

1:56:03 Think about how Think about how often Big Tech changes the deal.

1:56:12 Pray I don't alter it any further.

1:56:14 Yeah.

1:56:15 And with users

1:56:16 With users, I think there's there's a pretty strong argument to be

1:56:19 made that they they have changed the deal in pretty substantial ways.

1:56:24 Some of those changes, in my opinion,

1:56:26 come with the reality of just not being like

1:56:28 VC-funded anymore and needing to run a profitable business model.

1:56:33 I can't I can't blame them for that.

1:56:34 You got You got to eat.

1:56:36 Um but in terms of the way

1:56:39 that they've engaged with the creators on their platform,

1:56:42 the ones who give it the value,

1:56:43 the way that they have consistently stuck with that profit share model is nuts.

1:56:53 Yeah.

1:56:52 Literally, even seeing even seeing how the model works,

1:56:56 whether we're talking Vine,

1:56:58 whether we're talking TikTok or Meta, no matter who it is,

1:57:02 even seeing that obvious playbook that has worked so well,

1:57:07 uh YouTube calls it they call it a flywheel, right?

1:57:10 The flywheel spins, the creators create amazing

1:57:13 content which benefits YouTube, which makes money,

1:57:15 which goes to creators who spend it on content, who make better content.

1:57:17 That flywheel that YouTube relies on to continue elevating

1:57:22 the level of content on it and attracting creators to it.

1:57:27 It's in public.

1:57:28 It's plain for everyone to see.

1:57:31 And nobody else can just they can't do it.

1:57:36 They can't take out their wallet and just share the revenue.

1:57:40 of funny because by by by many accounts,

1:57:44 it's like actually cheaper and easier than doing something

1:57:48 like Netflix where you have to make the content yourself.

1:57:50 Uh but just no one else will do it.

1:57:52 But I I I I still maintain like

1:57:56 YouTube is really cool considering what it could be.

1:58:00 And there's some stuff that sucks.

1:58:02 I'm still salty about the dislike button

1:58:04 and and shorts have been very frustrating for me.

1:58:06 Although I do have an interesting update.

1:58:09 I heard on the open source creator Discord

1:58:11 a few people got access to the app update.

1:58:15 And it does what we were hoping it would do.

1:58:18 When you set your shorts limit to zero minutes,

1:58:21 it removes shorts entirely from your like main page.

1:58:26 But if you go to a creator, you can still find the shorts.

1:58:29 And that that is completely fine in my mind.

1:58:32 Uh I still don't like that if you do manually go find some shorts,

1:58:37 uh it's incredibly easy to bypass your zero minute limit.

1:58:41 Um but the fact that it kind of removes it from there is cool.

1:58:45 And no

1:58:47 the Oh, nice.

1:58:48 Yeah.

1:58:48 Yeah, let's check it out.

1:58:49 Uh okay.

1:58:50 So, I have it now.

1:58:52 Shorts feed limit 0 minutes.

1:58:55 So I'm going to I'm going to close the app.

1:59:00 Yeah.

1:58:59 And then I'm going to I'll I'll log into I'll log into my account.

1:59:03 Actually no, I'll I'll stay on the LTT account I guess.

1:59:06 I saw shorts.

1:59:07 Okay, so wait.

1:59:09 Yeah, I see shorts immediately.

1:59:11 No, they're gone.

1:59:12 They're they're gone.

1:59:13 Wait.

1:59:13 Scroll down.

1:59:14 No, that's play wait, YouTube playables.

1:59:16 Oh, for crying out loud.

1:59:17 Can I get rid of these?

1:59:18 Not interested.

1:59:18 Okay.

1:59:25 Yeah, okay.

1:59:25 Yeah, no shorts.

1:59:26 Holy bananas.

1:59:29 Sweet.

1:59:28 Top news.

1:59:32 Holy bananas, dude.

1:59:37 That's crazy.

1:59:38 No shorts.

1:59:39 Also, this is a this is a quality recommendation.

1:59:44 You're going to get the [laughter]

1:59:52 How is that How is that in my recommendations right now?

1:59:56 Fantastic.

1:59:57 Um It was yeah.

1:59:59 That's a that's a throwback for sure.

2:00:01 account?

2:00:02 Uh someone's looking up the the Das Boot beer song?

2:00:06 Amazing.

2:00:06 Amazing.

2:00:07 [snorts] That 19.com Um

2:00:10 Is that 19 still around?

2:00:12 I have no idea.

2:00:15 Now I want to know.

2:00:18 Yes.

2:00:19 All right, let's let's

2:00:20 See what's on that 19.

2:00:20 Oh, okay.

2:00:21 It feels like the same stuff though.

2:00:24 This is literally like I I think they made

2:00:26 the video about this 5-lb gummy bear over 10 years ago.

2:00:31 Yeah.

2:00:31 Honestly, I saw the gummy bear and then I saw

2:00:33 the micro magnets and I was like nothing has changed.

2:00:36 Dude.

2:00:38 I mean Look.

2:00:39 Look.

2:00:40 Why would you

2:00:41 Hold on a second.

2:00:41 Hold Get get out of here.

2:00:43 Look look listen listen, sir.

2:00:45 I ain't a mathematician.

2:00:47 But let me tell you let me tell you this.

2:00:50 times

2:00:52 [clears throat]

2:00:52 How much is it?

2:00:52 $57.09

2:00:57 57 Woo, in gummy bears, dude.

2:00:59 Let's go.

2:01:00 5.7 million dollars of gummy We're in the wrong business, sir.

2:01:04 be making gummy bears.

2:01:06 Make some creatine gummy bears.

2:01:08 Do it that way.

2:01:09 That is That is wild.

2:01:14 It's interesting that they they put like a like

2:01:16 a purchase counter on seems like every product.

2:01:19 It's not just It's not just key ones.

2:01:23 rubber chicken pen That seems like dancing.

2:01:27 Okay.

2:01:28 Well, yeah, that's that's definitely a site that still exists.

2:01:33 the super-sized playground ball with unmatched durability

2:01:38 No purchase count on this one.

2:01:40 It can handle a little Oh, this is new.

2:01:42 This is in their their new tab.

2:01:45 I see.

2:01:47 Okay.

2:01:49 Catching a ball with the world's largest glove All right.

2:01:54 Man, internet, you have really you have

2:01:57 really gotten to be a thing, haven't you?

2:01:59 Uh let's go talk about Let's talk about Huddems.

2:02:06 Huddems Have you seen this?

2:02:09 Yep.

2:02:09 I'm not quite sure if this qualifies as good news, but it's certainly

2:02:12 It's news.

2:02:13 fascinating news

2:02:14 good for like I don't know.

2:02:16 No, I don't think it's I I I don't

2:02:18 I think it could be.

2:02:19 I think it's just dumb.

2:02:20 super cost-effective computers where you just need something You need

2:02:25 a RAM stick in the computer so it can turn on.

2:02:30 Intel, ASRock, and Team Group have unveiled Huddem, half unbuffered DIMM,

2:02:36 a new DDR5 spec that uses one 32-bit subchannel rather than the usual two.

2:02:42 Um Fewer memory chips per stick means that it can be cheaper

2:02:46 to produce as long as you don't need the extra capacity anyway.

2:02:51 With that said, early benchmarks confirm the trade-off is pretty brutal.

2:02:56 You get a little over 50% as much bandwidth across the board,

2:02:59 which makes sense because if you had

2:03:01 a single 32-bit subchannel instead of two 32-bit subchannels,

2:03:04 then you would have half as many 32-bit subchannels.

2:03:08 Um then in order to get the performance that you might expect from DDR5,

2:03:13 you would actually need two HooDIMS in dual channel,

2:03:17 and that would be the same as like one conventional DDR5 stick.

2:03:22 The whole thing exists because of the DDR5

2:03:25 shortage that has been driving prices through the roof.

2:03:27 It's aimed at entry-level desktops and office machines

2:03:30 that don't need peak memory performance, but hear me out.

2:03:33 DDR4 for those Okay, that doesn't help office machines.

2:03:36 And like man, it just feels like a lot of manufactury waste.

2:03:40 Um One interesting thing though is that you can apparently start with a HooDIM

2:03:45 today and then add a regular DDR5 stick for an asymmetric setup.

2:03:50 So, we've seen asymmetric memory before.

2:03:54 I remember back um AMD socket A.

2:03:58 So, this will be this will be a a deep cut.

2:04:00 Did I use it right?

2:04:02 Socket A.

2:04:04 Yes.

2:04:03 had three sticks.

2:04:05 Had three memory sticks.

2:04:07 And the way that it worked was even though it did support dual channel,

2:04:11 you had two or three memory sticks three slots.

2:04:13 So, you would install two sticks in dual channel,

2:04:16 and then you could install a third memory stick

2:04:19 in the last slot that would operate in single channel mode.

2:04:22 And the idea behind it was that you'd use

2:04:24 the dual channel memory that was running in dual channel faster

2:04:27 speed until you had too much in memory and then

2:04:30 it would overflow into the single channel one that was slower.

2:04:33 Um Nvidia also famously pulled this a similar move on the um GTX 970,

2:04:41 which had 3 and 1/2 gigs of RAM at full speed,

2:04:44 and then it had the other half a gig of RAM at a lower

2:04:46 speed due to the way that the uh memory bus was configured.

2:04:51 Um It wasn't that big of a deal in either of those cases.

2:04:57 It worked pretty good, but

2:04:58 this will be a huge deal, either.

2:04:59 I still think who deems are maybe just like not maybe amazing.

2:05:04 Um I don't think they're cool.

2:05:06 Maybe it'll help again office computer situations, but yeah.

2:05:16 Neat.

2:05:18 [laughter]

2:05:18 Hopefully they're relatively cheaper enough that it'll be helpful.

2:05:21 The thing I actually found most interesting about

2:05:24 it was how uh they apparently tested it.

2:05:27 So, um let's see let me see if I can find a picture.

2:05:32 Uh Tom's Hardware doesn't have a picture of it, so let me have a look.

2:05:35 Maybe uh TechPowerUp also has an article.

2:05:39 Do they have a picture?

2:05:40 Show me the picture.

2:05:42 I don't know.

2:05:42 I saw a picture of how they tested it somewhere,

2:05:44 and basically they just took a regular not who deem and put some Kapton tape

2:05:49 or some like packing tape over the contacts

2:05:52 for like the other 32-bit sub channel.

2:05:55 I was like, "Oh, yeah, okay.

2:05:57 I guess that would work as long as you As long as you

2:05:59 have BIOS support for just activating the one side." I was like, "Oh, okay.

2:06:04 I

2:06:05 I would have never thought of it.

2:06:06 What if I just taped over half of the half of the the the thingers

2:06:10 on my memory stick before I put it in?" Yeah, I know.

2:06:13 [snorts] I wouldn't I I I would not I would not think of that.

2:06:17 It wouldn't occur to me.

2:06:18 Um

2:06:22 [snorts] No, we'll do that after.

2:06:22 The EU is starting February 2027 going

2:06:27 to require batteries in portable devices to be,

2:06:30 and this is a quote, "readily removable and replaceable." Huzzah!

2:06:35 And, this is key, that has to be

2:06:37 by end users using commercially available tools.

2:06:40 No proprietary screws, no heat guns, no solvents.

2:06:43 Replaceable batteries must also stay available for at least

2:06:47 5 years after a product leaves the market.

2:06:50 This is super interesting.

2:06:51 This is super cool.

2:06:52 But, there is a notable exception.

2:06:54 Devices that manage to hit IP67 waterproofing and that can maintain

2:07:00 80% of their battery capacity after 1,000 full charge cycles are exempt.

2:07:05 Apple already meets this threshold on every iPhone since

2:07:08 the 15 and most flagship Android phones likely do as well,

2:07:11 meaning that the phones that many enthusiasts actually care

2:07:15 about um may not be impacted by this and many

2:07:20 of the phones that people may not find to be worthwhile

2:07:23 to bother repairing because of the cost involved in, you know,

2:07:27 upgrading or repairing a device.

2:07:29 Um may be the only ones that are actually impacted.

2:07:34 Some outlets though are reporting that this could

2:07:35 still push manufacturers toward easier battery access across

2:07:38 the board since budget and mid-range devices that don't

2:07:41 hit the exemption thresholds would need to comply,

2:07:45 but the regulation may end up changing

2:07:47 very little about how flagship phones are built.

2:07:52 Our discussion question is, if every flagship phone qualifies for the exemption,

2:07:56 does this regulation actually change anything or did the EU just write a right

2:08:01 to repair rule with a loophole big enough to drive a phone through it?

2:08:05 Um given that not everybody buys flagship phones,

2:08:09 which seems to be kind of a a carrier subsidy sort

2:08:13 of market um assumption that everybody just like has a flagship phone,

2:08:17 it just might be a few years old or it might be a current one.

2:08:20 Um no, I I think this could actually make a substantial difference because

2:08:24 those those more uh value-oriented mid-range phones where

2:08:28 either they didn't pay for the IP certification

2:08:31 or they um are not built for it could end up being built

2:08:36 in a way that makes the batteries easier to replace which is never a bad thing.

2:08:40 I do worry a little bit that again the devices most impacted

2:08:45 by this might be the ones that also

2:08:46 aren't getting software updates after that time.

2:08:50 Yeah.

2:08:49 And therefore might have security concerns around using them.

2:08:53 But I consider this still progress.

2:08:57 I was going to say steps.

2:08:59 And phones are just a small part of the portable electronics picture.

2:09:04 Like [snorts] I got I man I got super offended by my stupid old toothbrush

2:09:09 that had a a battery that was

2:09:10 clearly intentionally designed to be impossible to replace.

2:09:14 Not impossible but very difficult.

2:09:16 I was just like this is offensive because the only reason

2:09:21 that this doesn't work anymore is because you made sure it wouldn't.

2:09:25 Yeah.

2:09:24 and I resolved never to buy a toothbrush from that company again.

2:09:27 I don't remember what it was but I still have it.

2:09:28 I still have it.

2:09:28 How did they do that?

2:09:29 Um basically just like the way that to when when it

2:09:33 was closed up the way that it closes kind of like break it.

2:09:37 latches and things like conceal the access cover

2:09:40 and and I can understand a little bit

2:09:42 of that it might have been done like kind of maybe for water resistance like it

2:09:46 used a like a magnetic charger so it was like quite sealed up but I I

2:09:50 think they it seemed intentional and when I

2:09:53 looked up a guide it seemed even more intentional.

2:09:55 I did not like that.

2:09:56 Yeah, yeah.

2:09:57 Very upset.

2:09:59 Yeah, I think it was Oral-B.

2:10:00 Fire Panda Sasquatch says uh yeah,

2:10:02 I'm I'm pretty sure it was Oral-B so I will never

2:10:04 buy an Oral-B toothbrush again unless they fix their fix their biz.

2:10:09 Um So yeah, I can see this making a much bigger difference

2:10:14 in spaces like other personal electronic devices maybe not as much in in phones.

2:10:20 Speaking about fixing their biz,

2:10:21 I don't know if this is positive may maybe it is.

2:10:25 Uh Nintendo is getting tariff refunds apparently,

2:10:28 uh but their customers should probably

2:10:31 get those considering they raised their prices.

2:10:33 Two US gamers have filed a class action lawsuit against Nintendo

2:10:36 arguing that the company is about to double dip on tariff costs.

2:10:40 When Trump's tariffs hit last year,

2:10:42 Nintendo raised prices on Switch consoles, Switch to accessories,

2:10:46 and controllers by $5 to $50 across

2:10:49 the board explicitly citing tariffs as the reason.

2:10:53 CEO uh Shuntaro Furukawa uh told investors in May

2:10:57 2025 that tariffs would be incorporated into the price.

2:11:01 After the Supreme Court ruled the tariffs unconstitutional in February,

2:11:06 Nintendo sued the US government to get its tariff payments back,

2:11:09 and the government is now processing roughly 166

2:11:14 billion dollars in refunds to over three Oh, this isn't just a Nintendo.

2:11:20 Okay.

2:11:20 Woah.

2:11:21 To over 330,000 importers.

2:11:24 The plaintiffs argue that since Nintendo already already

2:11:27 passed the tariff costs onto customers through price hikes,

2:11:30 getting a government refund on top

2:11:32 of that means Nintendo collects the same money twice.

2:11:35 Nintendo isn't the only company facing this.

2:11:37 FedEx, UPS, Costco, and eyeglass importer EssilorLuxottica

2:11:42 have all been hit with similar lawsuits.

2:11:44 FedEx actually promised to pass refunds back to customers and got sued anyways.

2:11:50 Oh, America.

2:11:51 Hilarious.

2:11:52 When asked back in March whether it planned to share refunds with customers,

2:11:56 Nintendo said they Nintendo would only say,

2:11:59 "We have nothing else to share on this topic." Which is akin to saying nothing.

2:12:04 Uh discussion question, Nintendo passed the tariff costs to customers

2:12:07 and is now collecting a refund from the government.

2:12:09 Should companies that raised prices be required to pass refunds back?

2:12:13 All right.

2:12:13 Alon asks, "Linus, if you get a tariff refund for lttstore.com sales,

2:12:18 would you return them to customers?

2:12:22 So, Did you raise prices for tariff stuff?

2:12:26 For us, it was not black and white.

2:12:27 We did not simply increase our prices and then

2:12:32 adjust our new retail price according to our new cost.

2:12:36 Or walk to Mordor.

2:12:38 Or walk to Mordor?

2:12:39 Oh, one does not One does not One does not simply Um

2:12:43 and what I suspect is that for a lot of other companies,

2:12:49 it probably wasn't that black and white, either.

2:12:52 So, let me let me explain, you know,

2:12:54 what we did when um a certain someone had a little fit about whatever

2:13:01 and decided to go to trade war with the whole world for some reason.

2:13:05 Um Basically, we went to our suppliers and we said, "Hey, you know,

2:13:13 it could significantly impact our volumes through you if you are not able

2:13:18 to do anything to help us help our customers weather this storm." So,

2:13:24 some of it was absorbed by our by the manufacturer

2:13:28 and supplier partners that we engage with both onshore and overseas.

2:13:35 All right?

2:13:36 Some of it was absorbed by our customers.

2:13:40 We did raise prices on some items.

2:13:45 Okay.

2:13:44 However, some of it was also absorbed by us in multiple forms.

2:13:50 So, for some things, for example, you might have noticed that t-shirts are

2:13:54 substantially more expensive on lttstore.us compared to lttstore.global.

2:14:00 That is not because we are making more money on the US store.

2:14:04 Back when this whole thing first happened, I made the call for us to, in spite

2:14:12 of the extremely high tariffs on those t-shirts,

2:14:15 basically eat the margin on them.

2:14:18 Yeah, cuz I think that's the last I heard of it.

2:14:21 We, as far as I know, unless anything has changed,

2:14:25 um our pricing for t-shirts on lttstore.com is higher,

2:14:29 but it is only higher reflective of our increased costs.

2:14:35 If uh if I recall correctly,

2:14:36 we are either not making money or barely making money on t-shirts

2:14:40 on the US site um ever since this whole thing went down.

2:14:45 Also, there were other costs that were incurred

2:14:48 by us that were not directly related to That's one I was going to bring up.

2:14:53 product cost.

2:14:54 Uh we spent an inordinate No, I'm not going to say spent.

2:14:59 We wasted a[ __] inordinate amount of time

2:15:04 and money dealing with[ __] that was completely unnecessary.

2:15:08 Uh none of this had to be done.

2:15:09 We literally had to roll out a US warehouse in order

2:15:14 to soften the blow of these price increases, these import taxes

2:15:19 and store

2:15:20 for our American customers.

2:15:21 We had to develop a split store that has a now a global store and a US store.

2:15:27 created more friction, which reduced sales.

2:15:31 Um it also uh like increasing your price

2:15:34 because of tariffs will reduce your sales as well.

2:15:38 There was an impact on our sales volumes.

2:15:40 So, we took an impact to our profits,

2:15:42 we took an impact to our sales volumes, we took an impact to our overhead.

2:15:48 None of which is directly um Actually,

2:15:53 one only one of which is easily sort of directly measurable.

2:15:57 The rest of them, it's hard to say exactly how much

2:15:59 of it was borne by us versus borne by someone else.

2:16:02 That being said, I'd love to see consumer relief as well.

2:16:06 Um Yeah, and and I think we Did we talk

2:16:08 about this on Wan Show or just on Blank Show?

2:16:11 it's very multi-faceted in how this impacted sellers.

2:16:15 But I don't know if we did or not.

2:16:16 Did we talk about this on Wan Show or off Wan Show?

2:16:18 Cuz I think I did talk to you about how how it Yeah,

2:16:21 it does seem kind of[ __] up that at the end of the day, you know,

2:16:25 just businesses are getting helped.

2:16:27 __] always rolls down a hill, right?

2:16:31 And so And the good stuff is going up.

2:16:33 the end user I mean,

2:16:34 I talked about this and it's it's so weird because the math is just math, right?

2:16:38 The math math is math.

2:16:40 And so at the end of the day,

2:16:42 if there's an increase in price somewhere in the supply chain at some point,

2:16:48 the customer will pay for it because that's the only way that someone

2:16:52 has to pay for it and it's always going to be the customer.

2:16:55 Um and it's it sucks that ultimately the customer,

2:17:00 you know, bore a lot of these costs, but

2:17:04 And then right, and then it's not the customer who is I mean,

2:17:08 I don't even see how you would administer a program.

2:17:10 I've been trying to think about that.

2:17:11 I I customer would go back and and what what How what would they claim against?

2:17:15 think you could do it accurately.

2:17:16 I think you'd have to do it for like I think you'd have to ignore Hm.

2:17:22 I think my way would be below a certain income threshold.

2:17:27 You just get like a certain amount of tax break or something.

2:17:33 Have to do it below a certain income.

2:17:35 Yeah, but it would I mean, it's based on like direct consumption.

2:17:37 So how would you do that fairly?

2:17:39 to measure.

2:17:40 Yeah, cuz I think it would just have to be the same amount for everybody.

2:17:43 Yeah, it's it's it's definitely very impossible to measure, but like oh my god.

2:17:50 Yeah.

2:17:53 So in summary I haven't seen how much we're owed yet.

2:17:57 Actually, I think that um I think that Tony said that sometime either

2:18:01 last week or early this week he'd have he'd have a rough idea.

2:18:05 I'm actually I'm going to I'm going to ping him now.

2:18:07 I Um any idea on what we are owed for tariff stuff?

2:18:15 Uh yeah, let me see if I can I'll see if I can find that out,

2:18:17 but um what I suspect is that it's

2:18:21 nowhere near what we spent reworking like our company.

2:18:27 There's no way because it's this crap.

2:18:29 It's Yeah, it's it's not measuring the um the intangible stuff.

2:18:33 All the insane meetings, the the massive amount of opportunity cost.

2:18:39 Like the time that people like me and Taran

2:18:42 and other senior leaders at the company spent talking

2:18:46 about this instead of how do we make more

2:18:48 videos or make more products or um serve our serve

2:18:52 our audience and serve our customers in ways that are

2:18:55 positive and constructive instead of just undoing completely unnecessary

2:19:00 negative impacts is it would be pretty tough for us

2:19:03 to measure after the fact to be honest with you.

2:19:06 And so yeah, the bottom line is I really don't um man

2:19:13 Hamnetic said the tariff income balances out to about 450 US per resident.

2:19:19 450?

2:19:19 Was it that much?

2:19:21 That's wild.

2:19:22 That's That's insane.

2:19:24 I mean yeah, I mean it makes sense cuz it was on so many imports.

2:19:29 Yeah.

2:19:31 Um man, what a the You know this is

2:19:35 going to this is going to come across like crazy.

2:19:39 But a small part of me actually wishes that at least you know,

2:19:45 they had stayed in effect then.

2:19:49 At least then the whole thing would have been for something.

2:19:52 Oh, yeah.

2:19:53 Cuz now it's for nothing.

2:19:57 Basically a whole bunch of global companies had their time wasted,

2:20:02 a whole bunch of consumers had their money wasted,

2:20:06 and there's no extra money to put theoretically into public services.

2:20:10 There it's just the whole thing is just And And now

2:20:13 there's the additional overhead of having

2:20:14 to administer this program and refunds.

2:20:16 Ultimately, what ended up happening is

2:20:20 the US government made life super hell for a lot of companies

2:20:24 and is now going to have to pay them a ton of money.

2:20:27 I think there's interest too.

2:20:28 from consumers.

2:20:29 I think there's interest.

2:20:30 And consumers are going to get hyper hosed cuz they're not going to get jack.

2:20:37 Like So, US government just shoveled money towards companies,

2:20:40 which is effectively just shoveling money towards rich people.

2:20:43 Yeah, but shoveled money towards companies after

2:20:46 after costing them a bunch of money.

2:20:49 Yeah.

2:20:48 So, not even like not even just giving a handout to the rich.

2:20:51 You're like Hey, do a bunch of unnecessary

2:20:54 work and have a bunch of unnecessary expense.

2:20:57 Yeah.

2:20:57 And then we'll pay you back with interest later.

2:21:00 Thanks.

2:21:01 You're still going to be at a loss on this, but thanks.

2:21:04 I'm at a loss.

2:21:06 Yeah.

2:21:05 Um hey, but we've got some good news because it's good news when show.

2:21:10 Apple has fixed a flaw that allowed

2:21:11 the FBI to access historical push notifications.

2:21:15 sucked.

2:21:15 I didn't like that.

2:21:17 Oh, I'm sorry.

2:21:18 I'm happy we're back to good news.

2:21:20 Which one?

2:21:20 I don't know.

2:21:21 Oh, the Nintendo getting tear-free points?

2:21:22 I mean, it's good news for Nintendo.

2:21:24 Yeah.

2:21:26 [laughter] Yeah, technically.

2:21:27 I In Apple's update notes for 26.4.2,

2:21:30 it includes a logging issue was addressed

2:21:34 with improved data redaction to resolve an to resolve

2:21:37 an issue where notifications marked for deletion

2:21:40 could be unexpectedly retained on the device.

2:21:43 Before the fix, cleared or deleted notifications

2:21:45 were sometimes stored in a notification database,

2:21:48 which had been recoverable using forensic extraction tools.

2:21:52 I believe it was Signal who flagged this and our discussion question is

2:21:57 good job Apple because apparently they got

2:21:59 it taken care of relatively uh quickly.

2:22:04 So, I think that's pretty cool.

2:22:06 That's Apple putting their money where their mouth is,

2:22:08 putting their development efforts in towards something that really benefits

2:22:12 the privacy of their users and I'm always going to support that.

2:22:17 Oh, I might have accidentally uh minimized

2:22:21 a couple of just like uh impromptu topics.

2:22:25 I still have one of them here.

2:22:27 Um this is this is pretty good news.

2:22:32 Yeah, if there if there's another one.

2:22:33 Uh Hex OS has gone v1.0.

2:22:35 Oh, nice.

2:22:36 Yeah, the remember the whole controversy when

2:22:38 they first announced around uh local dashboard access?

2:22:42 Yeah.

2:22:42 It is now live.

2:22:43 Which is good.

2:22:44 Which is good and should have always been a thing, but hey, look.

2:22:47 Uh John, their CEO, is is one of the nicest,

2:22:51 most humble people that I've ever met.

2:22:53 You know, when the community told him, "Hey, you're wrong about this.

2:22:56 Even though there are, you know,

2:22:57 you've got all your technical reasons why it made

2:22:59 sense to do it the way you did it.

2:23:01 This is really important to us.

2:23:02 You're wrong." He said, "Okay.

2:23:04 By the time we go 1.0, we'll have it." He made the commitment.

2:23:08 It's done.

2:23:10 Great.

2:23:10 And you got to you don't have to, you know,

2:23:13 you don't have to like the thought process.

2:23:15 You don't have to like how long something takes,

2:23:16 but you got to you got to respect the follow-through.

2:23:19 So, uh Hex OS, for those of you who are not familiar,

2:23:22 is the NAS software that I invested in a while ago and um man,

2:23:29 I was at Creator Summit and um three creators spontaneously came up to me asking

2:23:39 me about like what would be the ideal

2:23:41 thing for keeping their data safe, like 3-2-1.

2:23:44 Um Um, one of them even described the concept of buddy backup to me

2:23:49 and asked if if there was something on the market that existed like that.

2:23:53 And I was like, "It's coming.

2:23:55 Buddy backup's not implemented yet.

2:23:57 The local dashboard is there, but buddy backup is still coming soon.

2:24:00 Uh, and the idea behind it is that Luke could I could

2:24:03 give Luke a couple hard drives for him to put in his NAS.

2:24:06 He gives me a couple hard drives for me to put in my NAS.

2:24:08 And then we're just buddies, and we just use a secure tunnel to store

2:24:12 encrypted versions of essential data on each other's NASes.

2:24:15 We don't pay any subscription fee to any cloud provider.

2:24:18 It's just buddies backing up buddies." And I'm like, "I'm so excited."

2:24:24 Just things Windows definitely could have solved.

2:24:27 I know.

2:24:30 Okay, why are you bringing things negative now?

2:24:33 You're sad about Windows.

2:24:34 I get it.

2:24:35 You know what?

2:24:36 It's my bad.

2:24:37 You know what?

2:24:37 I get it.

2:24:38 topic just threw me off, man.

2:24:39 No, no, no, no.

2:24:40 We're not going to let the vibe be wrecked.

2:24:42 Hey, that [clears throat] was the other one.

2:24:43 I remember what the other thing I wanted to talk about was.

2:24:45 Okay, we're going to get into after dark real quick here.

2:24:47 Oh, wait, no.

2:24:48 We're going to get our sponsors done first,

2:24:49 but then I have something really important I want to talk to you guys about.

2:24:52 Um, the show is brought to you today by Shokz.

2:24:56 Not many people know this, but about

2:24:57 3% of people experience something called musical anhedonia,

2:25:02 which is a science-y way of saying that they don't like music.

2:25:06 Really?

2:25:06 I did not know that.

2:26:51 All right.

2:26:52 Shoot, I forgot what it was.

2:26:54 Balls, right.

2:26:55 Good news when?

2:26:57 Should we just continue it?

2:27:00 Uh yeah.

2:27:01 Oh, okay.

2:27:02 Well, that was a shorter conversation than I expected.

2:27:04 I when we were leading up to it and even maybe

2:27:08 after the first one a little bit, I I saw rumblings.

2:27:12 Saw rumblings in the chats and in the in the forums and Reddits and

2:27:16 Never watch again.

2:27:17 out there in the comments.

2:27:19 Um you know, "I expect uh more,

2:27:21 you know, 360-degree coverage." And And you know what?

2:27:24 That's totally fair.

2:27:25 That's totally fair, you know?

2:27:26 I I think we can compromise it a little bit.

2:27:29 I think particularly important negative topics can be included.

2:27:34 [snorts]

2:27:33 But in general,

2:27:34 I think we should aim for general positivity.

2:27:38 I um I think with the state of the world right now,

2:27:41 I think to a certain degree it is our duty to Hm, he said duty.

2:27:50 to And and I think this is true for like

2:27:51 a lot of uh creators to try to you know, do the song and dance.

2:28:00 Be a place that doesn't have to be as dark

2:28:02 as where a lot of other places are right now.

2:28:06 Sorry, what did you say?

2:28:08 I'm like super tired.

2:28:09 I woke up at 3:00 in the morning.

2:28:10 So Okay, that makes sense.

2:28:11 Yeah, that that was not coherent.

2:28:12 But I I understand what you're saying.

2:28:14 actually not?

2:28:14 It seemed fine to me.

2:28:15 Be a place that is not as dark as everywhere else.

2:28:18 Then you said something about other creators.

2:28:19 Are they?

2:28:19 Cuz I don't I don't saying it's it's the job OF US COLLECTIVELY.

2:28:23 OH, OKAY, now I understand.

2:28:25 genuinely everyone, but like

2:28:27 Okay, cool.

2:28:27 That makes more sense.

2:28:28 Okay, according to Tim, it was perfectly coherent.

2:28:31 It must be me.

2:28:32 I sorry, I've been traveling a lot, too.

2:28:34 did Yeah, I've I'm genuinely wicked tired.

2:28:36 So like [laughter]

2:28:39 It makes sense to me if it was not super coherent.

2:28:41 Luke said, "Let's get pizza." Yeah, nice.

2:28:43 Um

2:28:46 [laughter]

2:28:45 Yeah, I I'm just I'm just I'm just After the first couple,

2:28:49 I started to see the the rumblings go away.

2:28:52 And the rumblings started to go the other way.

2:28:55 And I felt the same way.

2:28:56 Also, dude, like we would finish Wan Show and I'd like feel all right.

2:29:01 And a lot of the Wan Shows of the last

2:29:03 like while before we were doing this, yeah,

2:29:05 I'd finish Wan Show and I'd just be kind of down.

2:29:07 Yeah, like not I was more than down sometimes.

2:29:10 I was like done.

2:29:12 Yeah.

2:29:12 You know?

2:29:14 Yeah.

2:29:13 Like I even I even have a a character for like when I can't anymore, you know?

2:29:18 And that's like that's not a state you want to reach every Friday.

2:29:22 been kicked off in a while.

2:29:23 And I I think a big part, too,

2:29:24 is like I think this is universally true for all of us.

2:29:28 We're all getting the negative news.

2:29:31 Yeah.

2:29:31 I don't think they also needed here.

2:29:34 Yeah.

2:29:34 Like I And again, if it is particularly

2:29:37 important or a particularly big deal for whatever reason,

2:29:41 sure, we can include it.

2:29:43 But if it's like okay, you have to pick one.

2:29:46 Khan passed away, we would have to cover that.

2:29:48 That would be bad news.

2:29:49 be bad news.

2:29:50 That would be cataclysmic bad news.

2:29:53 Uh but if if you're trying to compare like which one

2:29:55 of these two topics should we include

2:29:58 and they're pretty similar in importance level,

2:30:00 but one of them is good news and one of them is bad news,

2:30:02 ditch the bad news one.

2:30:06 Yeah.

2:30:05 How about this?

2:30:06 How about How about

2:30:08 If it's an important security thing or something, we can still flag it.

2:30:12 I'm going to say 90% ratio.

2:30:16 Yeah, I think that's reasonable to be honest.

2:30:18 So, you can pick So,

2:30:19 we'll tell the like the news team which and actually I'm usually

2:30:22 the one who goes through and picks the topics for the show, but whatever.

2:30:25 So, but basically when you bring the menu,

2:30:27 if you're bringing 20 topics, only two to three of them

2:30:32 should be should be negative topics.

2:30:35 pick the ones that are important.

2:30:36 Steve the past said exactly, algorithms make sure you get the bad news.

2:30:39 And I think that's kind of an interesting way

2:30:41 of approaching it is we should try to be the opposite.

2:30:46 Yeah.

2:30:45 And I'm so here for it.

2:30:47 a positivity skewed algorithm of news.

2:30:50 we've been live for almost 3 hours now.

2:30:56 And if I compare how I feel right now,

2:30:59 like how how how just tired and drained I feel right now cuz it's a little bit.

2:31:03 Like we've been you know, we've been on for for for 3 hours, right?

2:31:07 It's a long time.

2:31:08 Um like I don't I don't actually envy like game

2:31:10 streamers who are live for like 10 hours a day.

2:31:13 Like some of them like 12 hours a day.

2:31:14 These guys are crazy.

2:31:15 It's It's It's It can be draining.

2:31:17 Um Other than being awake for so long at this point,

2:31:21 I don't feel the like social exhaustion I often feel

2:31:26 from WAN Show because it is such a like Oh.

2:31:31 Yeah, I don't feel like that.

2:31:32 That topic was heavy and gross.

2:31:34 Time to go into the next heavy and gross topic.

2:31:36 Yeah.

2:31:36 Ready to feel down again?

2:31:38 Yeah, exactly.

2:31:39 And as look, it's not like we don't know these things.

2:31:41 We literally like have to review them in order to, you know,

2:31:45 get the topics together for the show.

2:31:46 And it's not like it's not like I didn't notice Google

2:31:50 that your newsfeed scrolls infinitely now and never says you're done.

2:31:53 Okay, well, unless you're having like an issue with, you know,

2:31:56 loading on your data or whatever.

2:31:57 Right?

2:31:57 Like I like I'm getting it all and I know you guys are getting it all.

2:32:02 I I want to move forward with good news WAN Show.

2:32:05 Maybe maybe that's just it.

2:32:07 Maybe the WAN Show channel is is an oasis of of positivity and optimism

2:32:13 about technology amidst just a sea of of diarrhea about technology, you know?

2:32:22 Yeah, let's do it.

2:32:24 Yeah.

2:32:25 And now let's do some uh check-out messages.

2:32:26 Dan, will you read some of them for us?

2:32:28 think there there was a I don't know if I addressed this on the show or not,

2:32:31 but there was one of the first good news WAN Show

2:32:34 someone pointed out that we like got off topic for a second.

2:32:36 We got really negative about something.

2:32:38 I don't even remember what it was.

2:32:40 And we got kind of like called out for it on Reddit and I agree with them.

2:32:47 Cuz whatever it was we were talking about,

2:32:49 I don't remember what it was, but it just wasn't very important.

2:32:53 It didn't matter.

2:32:55 And we still talked about it on a good news WAN Show.

2:32:58 And I was like, you know, that was unnecessary.

2:33:04 Yeah.

2:33:05 Yeah.

2:33:05 Cool.

2:33:05 If it's necessary, let's talk about it.

2:33:07 If it's not, let's keep it positive.

2:33:08 I think that's cool.

2:33:11 Yeah.

2:33:15 Let's do it.

2:33:16 Yeah.

2:33:19 Okay, yeah, we've got quite a few today.

2:33:23 Luke, every site wants me to make a passkey these days.

2:33:27 How is it possible the passkey is more secure than a strong password?

2:33:31 I have 2FA and still get asked to make a passkey for those sites.

2:33:36 I wish I could answer this for you better.

2:33:38 I honestly haven't done enough research

2:33:39 on passkeys cuz they're so infrequently available.

2:33:43 I feel like the passkey utopia that we were promised

2:33:48 It failed.

2:33:48 did not happen and I'm I'm

2:33:51 Well, I can't say it failed.

2:33:53 Well, it didn't happen.

2:33:54 I didn't say it failed.

2:33:54 I said I said it hasn't happened.

2:33:58 Yeah.

2:33:57 And this hybrid of like sometimes using passkey

2:34:01 and sometimes a password and sometimes a 2FA token or a notification

2:34:06 on my phone is actually just worse than any one of those things.

2:34:10 I I I I It is starting to get like almost like like a like

2:34:15 a like a like a triggering thing when I need to log into something.

2:34:20 Like I tried to I had to get into the labs building today

2:34:22 and I'd been logged out of Unify and I was just [clears throat] like

2:34:26 Dude, you got to get a fob.

2:34:27 Got a It's the way to go.

2:34:29 Well, see I carry the actual like master key to the building.

2:34:33 So it was only because I was going in the side door that it mattered.

2:34:36 So it's like yeah, whatever.

2:34:37 Uh Stife 2002 said passkey is basically asymmetric encryption.

2:34:42 It's something you have,

2:34:43 takes the knowledge and fishability completely out of the equation.

2:34:46 This is where This is why I haven't even bothered to look into it because No,

2:34:52 it doesn't in my opinion.

2:34:54 Then why do I even need it?

2:34:54 Because my phone is already a thing I

2:34:56 have which I already just biometrically authenticated for.

2:34:59 So your passkey is already redundant.

2:35:02 Like I just The reason why I'm saying no,

2:35:04 it doesn't is because most services that I know

2:35:09 of that have passkeys also allow you to just have like Oh,

2:35:15 we'll we'll just text your phone, bro.

2:35:18 Yeah.

2:35:18 You you want another option for signing?

2:35:20 Yeah, we can just text your phone, dude.

2:35:22 Do you remember that time?

2:35:23 Remember that time I showed you how many

2:35:25 authentication methods I had on one of my accounts?

2:35:30 Yeah.

2:35:30 was like terrifying because they Half of them didn't even like work anymore,

2:35:34 but they were they had just all been set up at some point.

2:35:37 Yeah, and then and then Cyfe said that's the implementation

2:35:39 and it's horribly implemented like horribly worst ever blah blah blah.

2:35:43 And yeah, I know I totally agree.

2:35:44 I wasn't say saying technically what you said was wrong.

2:35:47 What I'm saying is that right now as they

2:35:50 are they're kind of irrelevant in my experience.

2:35:55 Uh I have auto fill already,

2:35:57 so they don't really make it so that I log in any faster.

2:36:01 They it's also not doing biometric stuff like you're talking about,

2:36:05 so it doesn't really skip a step on mobile either.

2:36:09 So, it just like I don't know and then

2:36:12 you can just bypass it by using a different method.

2:36:15 And you can say like, "Oh, well, you know,

2:36:17 I won't do that." But for us personal security

2:36:21 is like a little bit less important than org security.

2:36:24 Um and any user can just be like, "Well,

2:36:28 I'm going to include being able to text my phone, so through ooh." Uh yeah.

2:36:35 Passkeys can require biometric authentication.

2:36:37 It's the site's choice.

2:36:41 This is like almost my whole point.

2:36:44 That they don't They're not doing that.

2:36:46 The They are also allowing you to in many actually like

2:36:50 high important account situations bypass it entirely by texting your phone,

2:36:55 which is like the worst possible thing.

2:36:58 It's it's the the the problem is like

2:37:01 the the tech can be as cool as the tech wants.

2:37:04 If it's not used fully and uniquely then it just doesn't matter.

2:37:13 Cuz it can it can be as secure

2:37:14 as you want if you're still receiving text messages,

2:37:19 it's all out the window.

2:37:24 There we go.

2:37:29 Hey lot of law, can you talk about an event where the outcome still boggles you?

2:37:37 Sure.

2:37:37 Actually, I was thinking about this just earlier this week because

2:37:40 of the whole supposed um blacklisting of certain YouTube media by AMD.

2:37:46 Um like I I basically I was I was kind

2:37:49 of asked to give an example of a time when a brand,

2:37:53 you know, had a seeding strategy that didn't really make any sense to me.

2:37:57 And there's one kind of favorite story that I have,

2:38:01 and it was a it was a large multinational display

2:38:06 manufacturer who had like the hottest display on the market.

2:38:12 Like this like it was so cool.

2:38:13 It's like this like giant curved like freaking amazing.

2:38:18 Nobody else would have had the stones to make something like this.

2:38:21 And we reached out to them trying to get trying to get a sample,

2:38:26 trying to get a review unit early because we were

2:38:28 like very excited about it and wanted to make a video.

2:38:31 And pretty much just like wanted to game on it

2:38:34 and talk about how freaking huge and immersive and cool it was.

2:38:38 And they turned us down.

2:38:40 And we were pretty bummed, right?

2:38:41 Because obviously we like to make videos

2:38:43 about cool tech that people want to see.

2:38:46 And that that gets us views, it gets, you know,

2:38:49 you guys informed on this cool new product,

2:38:52 and it gets eyeballs on the product for the brand.

2:38:53 It's you know, stacking Ws.

2:38:55 I love stacking Ws.

2:38:56 And this seemed like an obvious W stacker.

2:38:59 And they were like, "Nah." I was like, "Okay.

2:39:02 Well, that's a bummer." Fast forward, I kid you not,

2:39:06 I think it was 1 week later.

2:39:08 Might have been 2 weeks later.

2:39:09 It was like almost immediately in our business

2:39:14 leads inbox an offer from that same

2:39:18 company to do the exact video that we

2:39:22 pitched editorially this time from an agency.

2:39:25 So this is like classic right hand has no idea what the left hand is doing.

2:39:33 [snorts]

2:39:32 An offer to do that same video on that same monitor for I kid you not.

2:39:36 It was like tens of thousands of dollars for a video

2:39:40 that I wanted to do for free and was told nah.

2:39:46 That is an event where the outcome still boggles me.

2:39:51 Hi, can I do something for you for free?

2:39:53 No, but what you can do is do it for tens of thousands of dollars.

2:39:57 Should have waited a little while, I guess.

2:40:01 Bizarre.

2:40:01 I will never understand it.

2:40:03 Um And Gum for said, "Did you take the money?" Yeah.

2:40:07 [laughter] [gasps]

2:40:10 Of course.

2:40:11 I would have I wanted to do the video anyway.

2:40:14 I just I I did at the time I don't even Did you tell them when you got there?

2:40:19 Uh

2:40:20 No, no, they they shipped it here.

2:40:22 Oh, okay.

2:40:22 there was no one there was no one to tell.

2:40:24 It was just like

2:40:25 know how big this screen was.

2:40:26 Yeah, dude no I was it dude it was hilarious.

2:40:28 It's it's it's just so funny.

2:40:30 I was like this is the stupidest thing I've ever seen.

2:40:32 And and what's crazy is it is it's is it's not even um like we've seen [sighs]

2:40:42 Brands are just made up of people.

2:40:46 And people sometimes got up really early that day.

2:40:53 You know?

2:40:56 [laughter]

2:40:57 Yeah.

2:40:57 Uh do you have something where the outcome still boggles you?

2:41:04 Mm.

2:41:07 Some Yeah, not really that I want to go into details of.

2:41:10 Some of the contracts for services and stuff.

2:41:15 [laughter]

2:41:17 Uh

2:41:16 He is like the best negotiator ever.

2:41:18 By the way, if you want like

2:41:20 a contract negotiating like just a bulldog, you know.

2:41:24 I got some some interesting contracts.

2:41:26 Inc.

2:41:30 I don't know.

2:41:31 And your strategy is so simple.

2:41:32 You just say no.

2:41:33 Is that right?

2:41:35 For the most part.

2:41:35 No, that doesn't work for me.

2:41:36 also one where they had two different associates trying

2:41:39 to do sales with me at the same time.

2:41:42 Snake that commission.

2:41:43 And I ended up doing basically the like walk

2:41:46 across the street to the other car dealership thing,

2:41:49 but to the same company with their different associates.

2:41:53 So, the one would say like, "Oh, well,

2:41:55 I can give you this deal." And I'd go to the other guy and be like,

2:41:58 "Well, I'm getting like this other deal

2:42:02 from this other sales associate." And then have [laughter]

2:42:05 them both like work each other down, which was just incredible.

2:42:09 Uh there's been some pretty wild stuff.

2:42:11 But, um Oh, man, I just had one in mind.

2:42:17 Crap.

2:42:19 I'll try to keep thinking about it.

2:42:20 If it comes to me, I'll maybe I'll maybe I'll chime up.

2:42:24 More then.

2:42:24 All right, yeah, hit me down.

2:42:27 Yeah.

2:42:25 Hey LMLD, I recently went from working in my given field to working for a pretty

2:42:31 big media company in my industry

2:42:34 and I'm suddenly on camera making technical videos.

2:42:38 Any tips for a newbie?

2:42:39 I actually have lots of tips for you.

2:42:42 Um here.

2:42:45 You need to get a subscription to Floatplane.

2:42:47 You need to dig into the Floatplane exclusives.

2:42:50 And um I mean, where is it?

2:42:54 What's it called?

2:42:56 Definitely not that.

2:42:57 Sometimes you have to use quotes.

2:42:59 Mhm, the search is Nothing to find.

2:43:00 Here.

2:43:01 Extras, Linus teaches his son how to be a host.

2:43:05 Um, this one's pretty good.

2:43:07 And then there's also a behind the scenes

2:43:11 of me coaching a couple of our guests from Intel.

2:43:16 Here it is.

2:43:17 Linus host tips, Intel A770 GPU extras.

2:43:21 Uh, both of those two are a substantial amount

2:43:26 of my experience as a host in video form training other hosts.

2:43:31 So, uh, head on over there.

2:43:35 Hey, Luke.

2:43:36 As a user of Kachy OS, have you had a chance to ex- Kachy OS,

2:43:41 have you had a chance to explore the recent GPU patches for low

2:43:44 RAM cards or even the AMD GPU HDMI 2.0 VRR changes they include?

2:43:50 Any thoughts?

2:43:52 No, I was I was spoiled and was given a uh,

2:43:55 4080 Noctua, so I I don't have a low RAM card situation.

2:44:02 Where'd that come from?

2:44:05 You.

2:44:06 Oh.

2:44:06 Yeah, right.

2:44:07 Yeah, what do you [laughter] think?

2:44:08 I I forgot it was a Noctua edition.

2:44:10 Yeah, it's it's hard to you can't really tell.

2:44:12 That's sick.

2:44:13 You're welcome.

2:44:13 Yeah, it's covered in moss.

2:44:15 Uh, right, right.

2:44:16 [laughter] But, yeah, it's not super applicable to me.

2:44:18 I was like, damn, a Noctua edition?

2:44:19 That would That could We couldn't That wouldn't have been us.

2:44:23 [laughter] We We would have gone with like a like a dual or something,

2:44:25 you know, like But, Noctua edition, come on.

2:44:28 I don't necessarily know why you guys did that.

2:44:29 I'm not I'm not not made a Noctua fan here, you know.

2:44:32 At least I'm pretty sure it's a Noctua edition.

2:44:34 Yeah, it might be.

2:44:34 I think it is.

2:44:35 I I'll I'll I'll check.

2:44:35 I'll check.

2:44:36 Could I just paint it brown?

2:44:40 [laughter] Uh, yeah, so I It's not super applicable to me.

2:44:42 I did do the like relatively big recent Kachy update.

2:44:46 I haven't had a chance to really like play with it

2:44:50 much other than just knowing that my system is totally fine.

2:44:53 Um, Yeah.

2:44:57 Yeah, seems good.

2:44:59 I was I was excited to see those updates,

2:45:01 but I they're just not like super applicable to me right now, which is great.

2:45:05 I love that this chapter is called Luke's confidence lowers.

2:45:10 Um [snorts] oh, hello.

2:45:12 Okay, what are we What are we looking at here?

2:45:15 A motherboard.

2:45:16 Mhm, mhm.

2:45:17 Oh, GPU time.

2:45:18 Here we go.

2:45:19 It's So, it is Yeah.

2:45:20 Yep, that's a Noctua fan if I've ever seen one.

2:45:22 And you can't see any of that anymore cuz cuz it's all moss.

2:45:25 All right, I'm excited.

2:45:28 Running my first marathon on Sunday and the WAN

2:45:30 Show has gotten me through all my long runs.

2:45:33 Wow, congrats.

2:45:34 Hoping for a 4-hour show.

2:45:37 Nice.

2:45:37 Would you ever run a marathon and what is your biggest physical accomplishment?

2:45:43 I think my knees would explode.

2:45:44 Mine, too.

2:45:45 Um I think we're not made for that.

2:45:48 I I think not.

2:45:49 Uh Yeah, marathon.

2:45:50 That's That's very cool, though.

2:45:51 That's so cool and like like massive massive respect.

2:45:56 Uh do the whole thing on soft surfaces somehow.

2:46:00 That'd be pretty sweet.

2:46:02 I'd tape carpet to your shoes.

2:46:06 How Not Yeah, not really.

2:46:06 [laughter] How long was the Foam Run 2025?

2:46:11 Foam Fest.

2:46:12 Okay, that was like spray stuff?

2:46:14 Yeah, that was 5K.

2:46:15 I I did this with Yvonne because my son wanted to do it and then

2:46:20 she agreed to do it with him and then he got sick and had to bail.

2:46:28 [snorts] So, we had two tickets.

2:46:28 So, after me saying no, I have zero interest in this um [snorts] I

2:46:34 ended up being the one who had to do it.

2:46:36 Anyway, so how long How long's a marathon?

2:46:38 How many kilometers marathon?

2:46:40 So, I did that and it was a standard marathon is 42.195 km.

2:46:47 So, could I do the Foam Fest eight times?

2:46:51 The answer is no, probably never.

2:46:56 I think it's very cool though.

2:46:58 Greatest physical feat for me, um,

2:47:01 is probably just like a a cool like shot on the badminton court.

2:47:04 I have kind of a signature move where if my opponent plays a, uh,

2:47:09 uh, plays a a forehand side like really tight net or drop shot,

2:47:14 uh, I get I like I just I I I love to dive

2:47:17 and so I'll get like full body extension in the air and I will sometimes,

2:47:21 I've actually done it before,

2:47:23 catch it just below the court and manage to pop it back up and I've actually net

2:47:28 rolled it a couple times back over and every

2:47:30 time it's like like people go people go nuts.

2:47:33 Uh, so it would be like some some shot I made in badminton

2:47:36 sometime in terms of I have not had a lot of physical accomplishments.

2:47:40 More [snorts] of a pale techy guy.

2:47:44 I I am these days.

2:47:45 I All of mine will be very old.

2:47:47 I I think one of my one of my favorite ones to think back on is,

2:47:52 um, I think football, left defensive end.

2:47:55 I I got a sack but was able to punch

2:47:58 the the ball out and the right defensive end,

2:48:02 uh, recovered the fumble and scored a goal.

2:48:05 So, we got a we got a defensive touchdown which was sick.

2:48:09 Uh, there's another time where there was a field goal being shot and I jumped

2:48:12 up and and actually blocked it but didn't

2:48:15 realize that that doesn't stop the play.

2:48:17 So, my dad was screaming at me but I was still I was still proud.

2:48:20 My arm hurt but Nice.

2:48:21 That's all I still got it.

2:48:23 Um, Conrad from Floatplane says I can bench press my wife.

2:48:30 Sick.

2:48:31 Nice.

2:48:33 Sick.

2:48:35 Nice.

2:48:35 Wife [snorts] lifting is is based.

2:48:37 Oh, no.

2:48:38 Xfin724 in Floatplane chat says I was so bad at volleyball in high

2:48:43 school gym class that when I finally hit one over the net, both teams clapped."

2:48:49 [laughter] MORTIFYING.

2:48:51 THAT'S PRETTY EPIC.

2:48:53 AMAZING.

2:48:54 [laughter] UH, YEAH.

2:48:55 My favorite My favorite like memory is probably There's a There's

2:48:59 a video clip of me hitting some dude in hockey,

2:49:01 and then my GRANDPA GOES, "LET'S GO,

2:49:03 LUKER!" AND IT'S You can hear him cheering on the clip, and it's fantastic.

2:49:09 [laughter]

2:49:08 Siphilus says, "I can bench press two of my wives." How many do you have?

2:49:14 Hmm.

2:49:14 Okay, carry on.

2:49:14 All right, Dan, hit me.

2:49:16 pluralize wives.

2:49:19 [laughter] What's up, boys?

2:49:19 Are there any plans to make regular cargo shorts, not the zip-off pants?

2:49:23 Thanks.

2:49:24 Um, probably, but I don't have a timeline on that.

2:49:27 Sorry.

2:49:32 when.l:colon:colon I noticed that you have

2:49:33 been talking about your RC cars lately.

2:49:36 If you were to make content for the dozens

2:49:38 of us RC nerds out there, what would it be?

2:49:41 Reviews, weird and crazy builds, track days?

2:49:44 Definitely not track days.

2:49:45 I suck.

2:49:48 Uh, if I was going to do anything, it would be just like casual hangout streams,

2:49:52 like put a camera up in the corner of like my my little workshop corner at home,

2:49:56 and while I you know, fill shock fluid or whatever it is I'm doing.

2:50:01 Adam Savage kind of thing?

2:50:03 Um Just hang out with me in my shop.

2:50:05 Yeah, just like throw the chat up and just kind of chill.

2:50:09 How do you Moomoo Slick and Dandy Man?

2:50:12 Out of the recent AMD tech Moomoo?

2:50:15 Oh, my old email address, MoomooTheCow.

2:50:17 Oh, right.

2:50:18 Yeah, okay.

2:50:19 The one you use professionally.

2:50:20 That's a deep cut.

2:50:21 There you go.

2:50:22 it right now.

2:50:22 He's learning the slangs.

2:50:25 Very poggers.

2:50:26 you do, fellow kids?

2:50:28 Out of the recent AMD tech upgrades,

2:50:30 have there been any purchases that someone made that surprised you?

2:50:35 Yes.

2:50:34 Something you didn't expect what they would be interested in.

2:50:38 All of the like unnecessarily expensive collectible stuff just boggles my mind.

2:50:44 And like I know that there is like a subset

2:50:50 of the viewers that feel like I'm being like

2:50:55 I'm putting on a performance or I'm being disingenuous

2:50:59 when I like lose my mind over somebody spending like,

2:51:03 you know, $500 on a LEGO minifigure or something like that.

2:51:07 I promise you that it is not performative in the slightest.

2:51:12 If there was no camera pointed at me I would do the exact same thing.

2:51:17 I promise you that no matter how much money I had,

2:51:20 no matter how many jets I could buy

2:51:23 I would never spend $500 on a LEGO minifigure.

2:51:28 Ever.

2:51:29 You've spent some money on some collectible Xbox controllers, at least one.

2:51:33 This is true.

2:51:34 This is true.

2:51:35 So, okay.

2:51:36 Okay, you know what?

2:51:37 I have uh the one No,

2:51:40 the the one expensive one that I have is that one that the developers got.

2:51:45 You also have a gold one.

2:51:46 It's only a kind of a technicality, but That one's That one's

2:51:50 the the one I'm really talking about is the developer one.

2:51:52 Yeah, the developer one.

2:51:53 Um It it I use it though.

2:51:59 Which I Which I know is like crazy for something that's like a one of

2:52:03 I like that though.

2:52:04 very few.

2:52:04 But I like have spent hours gaming on it.

2:52:07 That's sweet.

2:52:08 So, to me there there And And look, everyone draws their own line, right?

2:52:12 Like slightly before their own behavior.

2:52:14 That's That's human nature, baby.

2:52:18 But to me, the fact that I game on it means that to me it's a controller.

2:52:24 It's not a shelf piece.

2:52:28 Ah, okay.

2:52:29 There are exceptions.

2:52:31 I purchased a copy of Final Fantasy VI for Super

2:52:35 Nintendo that I never intended to put into a slot.

2:52:39 But again, for me that was more about restoring Yeah.

2:52:43 a thing that I owned that I lost at a time

2:52:45 in my life when I lost a lot of things moving between my families.

2:52:49 Um I also purchased a copy of Final Fantasy Tactics

2:52:53 that I never intended to put into a PlayStation 1.

2:52:57 But that one was more about I have played this game

2:53:01 cover to cover three times and I have never purchased it.

2:53:07 Not good.

2:53:09 [laughter] So, I own a copy of the original and I paid for Iblis Chronicles.

2:53:13 I consider my sins washed clean at that point.

2:53:16 So, like Like I I mean,

2:53:18 I definitely I definitely buy stuff that's unnecessary sometimes.

2:53:22 Okay, like here Here's a perfect example.

2:53:24 Uh Evan and Caitlin Evan and Caitlin make this really cool knife.

2:53:31 Uh or like they partnered with a local Play hard.

2:53:34 Where Where is it?

2:53:36 Uh where do you find their Where do you find their Oh, here.

2:53:39 Here.

2:53:39 Here.

2:53:39 shop.evanandcaitlin.com.

2:53:41 They have this They have this really cool box cutter.

2:53:42 This thing is so cool.

2:53:44 It's also 120 Canadian dollars for a box cutter, which is like madness.

2:53:51 Ooh.

2:53:50 But it's uh replaceable.

2:53:52 You can put a new utility blade in it whenever you want and it is

2:53:55 like one of the most satisfying fidgets that I have ever encountered in my life.

2:54:00 Oh, actually I have it.

2:54:02 Um But again, I use it.

2:54:06 So, I don't know.

2:54:07 If you can If you can think of something that's

2:54:09 like a dumb thing that like I don't even use, then I'm open to it.

2:54:13 I guess I have my my katana.

2:54:15 People always comment on that on my mantle.

2:54:17 That was impulsive.

2:54:18 I was young.

2:54:19 We've used it.

2:54:19 Oh, and we have used it actually.

2:54:20 That's true.

2:54:22 And I And I specifically wanted one that was

2:54:24 an actual sword that was not purely decorative.

2:54:27 I think it's a 2/3 tang.

2:54:29 So, like you could like you could do some stuff

2:54:31 with it if you really wanted to and it's sharp.

2:54:34 Yeah.

2:54:35 Uh Here it is.

2:54:37 This thing is This thing is like so cool.

2:54:44 It's just It's Oh, dude.

2:54:46 It's so satisfying.

2:54:47 Hey, Oh, speaking of cool knives, I didn't pay for this one because he's a bro.

2:54:53 You got to give them the sound.

2:54:55 You have to give them the sound.

2:54:56 Dude, I got the Hacksmith blade.

2:54:59 I ran into him at Creator Summit.

2:55:01 He's He's my Canadian bro.

2:55:03 He brought one for me.

2:55:05 Um so, it's like a it's a multi-function knife if you

2:55:08 guys somehow managed to not see the Kickstarter for this thing.

2:55:13 Uh it has a built-in uh it has

2:55:15 like little built-in uh screwdriver bit storage here.

2:55:18 So, you slide these out and then they just uh go into the tip.

2:55:23 They're magnetic.

2:55:23 You can also put it in this way if there's like a tight

2:55:26 space you're trying to reach into and you want to do that.

2:55:29 Uh there's tweezers built into them.

2:55:31 Um There's a level.

2:55:35 There you go.

2:55:35 There's a little uh there's a little uh ruler on it.

2:55:39 Uh the clip is adjustable so you can put it on either side,

2:55:42 whichever kind of works better for you.

2:55:45 And uh man, what else is there?

2:55:46 Oh, yeah, bottle opener.

2:55:47 It has whatever this like pokey spiky thing is.

2:55:50 I actually don't don't remember what that one does.

2:55:51 Sorry, I was break?

2:55:53 Um uh maybe.

2:55:54 I don't know.

2:55:55 It's uh probably does something.

2:55:56 I mean, knowing knowing James, it definitely does something.

2:55:58 But this Okay, hold on.

2:56:00 I'm just going to Just just check this out.

2:56:03 It has these like Okay, hold on.

2:56:05 I'm I'm just going Just doesn't quite capture it.

2:56:11 Yeah, it doesn't quite capture it, but it's like way better in person.

2:56:18 Yeah.

2:56:20 It's It will.

2:56:21 Uh uh It is so flipping satisfying, man.

2:56:36 And I don't think that I have ever encountered

2:56:39 a folding knife that check it out check it out.

2:56:42 Like feel the feel the um feel how little

2:56:45 slop how little play there is in the blade.

2:56:48 I don't think I've ever encountered a folding

2:56:50 knife that feels as much like a fixed knife.

2:56:55 I I mean, I have, but it's really good.

2:57:01 I think I might have loosened it a little already.

2:57:04 [laughter] I've just Dude, ever since he handed it to me,

2:57:06 I've just been like I was I was on set

2:57:09 today and I forgot like how sharp this thing is.

2:57:13 And I was just like playing and there was some there was

2:57:16 some You know that like closed-cell like like really squishy like dense foam?

2:57:21 Sure.

2:57:21 I I just was like, you know, I'll I'll like stab it into it.

2:57:25 I went probably about this deep on the blade

2:57:29 through so like about probably this far, right?

2:57:32 Cuz it was at like a corner.

2:57:35 And it just passed right through it.

2:57:40 [laughter] Even though the blade is so whoops even though the blade is so

2:57:43 What are you doing?

2:57:44 There we go.

2:57:44 I'm doing something.

2:57:45 Even though it's so thick, right?

2:57:48 It's so sharp out of the box that it just was like shoop.

2:57:53 And I'm like, ooh.

2:57:54 Cuz I was like flipping it to myself like earlier in the shoot and stuff.

2:57:58 sound effect right then?

2:57:59 Nice.

2:57:59 That was amazing.

2:58:00 Solid.

2:58:01 So, I'm pretty sure I heard Dan do it, too.

2:58:04 Anyway, um Did he give you the torque flag?

2:58:06 Just tighten up.

2:58:07 Yes, Roman, he did give me the torque flag.

2:58:09 It comes with a little thing to properly torque this screw

2:58:12 to make sure that you get exactly the right feel on it.

2:58:16 So, yeah, super super impressed.

2:58:19 Um Way to go, James.

2:58:22 Now you just got to manufacture them all.

2:58:24 In case you're wondering why I have

2:58:25 one before all the customers have gotten one, uh this one had some kind of issue

2:58:30 with it that was cosmetic and didn't matter and it's

2:58:34 like not worth it to disassemble it and fix

2:58:37 it and reassemble it compared to just making another one.

2:58:39 So, he had a few of those at Creator Summit.

2:58:42 So, mine's not a perfect one.

2:58:43 I finally realized why I didn't have the Kickstarter for it.

2:58:48 Did you miss it?

2:58:49 Classic Luke.

2:58:49 No, I I was going to buy it for for myself,

2:58:54 my brother, and my dad as like a Christmas gift.

2:58:57 And then I logged into Kickstarter and got

2:58:59 flashbacks of the coal bar and was like,

2:59:02 "I'll just wait until they're like ready to ship purchasable." Got it.

2:59:07 And then I'll just get them then.

2:59:08 Yeah, yeah, you might have ended up cursing him

2:59:09 if you had bought one for your dad for Christmas.

2:59:11 Yeah, maybe.

2:59:12 We know what happened the last time you did that.

2:59:14 everyone that I didn't.

2:59:16 [laughter] Cuz I was trying to remember like I definitely wanted to get one.

2:59:19 Um and I yeah, I'm fairly certain that's what happened.

2:59:25 But yeah, they're they're pretty wicked cool.

2:59:30 Yeah.

2:59:29 Got to use this Linus coin somehow.

2:59:32 Thank you for fueling my tech skills

2:59:34 from virus downloading noob to self-hosting noob.

2:59:38 Nice.

2:59:38 What was the first application that you self-hosted?

2:59:40 How long ago was it?

2:59:43 Oh.

2:59:46 Ah.

2:59:47 Games or applications?

2:59:48 Counter-Strike.

2:59:51 What Counter-Strike?

2:59:52 Yeah, Counter-Strike.

2:59:55 Yeah, Mumble's Mumble's kind of goated.

2:59:57 I don't think would that count?

3:00:03 I set up uh slightly slightly later I set up an FTP server that I

3:00:07 could access from offsite just cuz it

3:00:08 was more convenient than um carrying around files.

3:00:13 I'd say those are those are my two like earliest ones.

3:00:15 I hosted a lot of game stuff before I did FTP server,

3:00:18 but I did do that at some point.

3:00:22 Hi LLD, question for Luke.

3:00:24 Do you think that open source software can find

3:00:26 a way to self-fund without relying on exclusive donations?

3:00:30 Correction.

3:00:31 Uh I did a bunch of research, but I think no,

3:00:35 my friend actually ended up posting the mumble.

3:00:36 So, the an FTP server for myself was my first one.

3:00:39 I don't want to leave that out there if it's not quite right.

3:00:41 Sorry, carry on.

3:00:43 Question was, do you think open source

3:00:44 software can self-fund without exclusively relying on donations?

3:00:48 Yeah, totally.

3:00:48 Corporate sponsors and corporate service sponsors.

3:00:51 a question for me.

3:00:53 Oh.

3:00:53 Although that's exactly what I was going to say.

3:00:55 So, so you're fine.

3:00:57 [laughter] Uh

3:00:57 Well, you were the one who asked it, so I just naturally answered it, okay?

3:01:01 echoing it.

3:01:01 So, I had to say it again.

3:01:02 Yeah, no, it's fine.

3:01:03 I was just razing you.

3:01:04 Um yeah, basically that though.

3:01:06 I think the main way to do it is through support effectively.

3:01:10 Um Technically, Mozilla, yeah, kind of.

3:01:14 That's a bit of a one-off.

3:01:15 We're going to get crazy amounts of money from Google, but um Yeah,

3:01:21 usually the like the standard path is is uh is is support.

3:01:29 So, you release it out there, hopefully it's useful for someone,

3:01:32 and hopefully those people want uh either like

3:01:35 a custom fork or just uh more general support contract.

3:01:41 Uh free tier, paid tier stuff, yeah.

3:01:43 Um generally, I think the normal play is

3:01:46 to make that more focused to enterprise customers.

3:01:50 Um there are ones that are just everybody, basically,

3:01:56 but but normally, I I see that being enterprise customers.

3:02:00 I told Hacksmith uh Luke asked if he can have one, too.

3:02:03 Got any more of the scrapped ones?

3:02:04 He says, "Haha, I'll see." Nice.

3:02:06 That's pretty non-committal.

3:02:07 if not, I'm buying them, so it doesn't really matter.

3:02:11 EJC said, "Speaking of that Mozilla thing,

3:02:14 are you using something different now?" Um

3:02:19 I'm trying to think across all devices.

3:02:20 I was using Zen for a bit, which is like a Mozilla fork, and I was enjoying it.

3:02:26 I'm not currently using it right now because I think I

3:02:28 tried to like Pac-Man install it and it didn't immediately work,

3:02:31 so I just kept using Firefox.

3:02:33 I I didn't like look into it,

3:02:35 but uh I might eventually try to get it back on my desktop again.

3:02:39 I liked the Zen The Zen had like all your tabs

3:02:42 are vertical and on the left side instead of across the top,

3:02:47 and I liked that because I generally use

3:02:50 Chrome for work or a Chromium browser for work, um and Firefox for personal,

3:02:57 and one of the reasons why I do that is just keep separation,

3:03:00 and using Zen with the vertical tabs made it like super obvious [laughter]

3:03:07 which browser I was in cuz sometimes uh when they're too similar

3:03:11 and my current setup for Firefox

3:03:13 and my current setup for Chromium on my desktop,

3:03:16 I get caught sometimes cuz they're kind of too similar,

3:03:19 and I'll load a YouTube video in my like work browser, Mhm.

3:03:22 and then uh oh Terrible.

3:03:24 Time to watch 10 million years of ads,

3:03:27 so then I have to bring it over to my personal one,

3:03:29 um and that's like pretty annoying, but yeah.

3:03:33 Luke met a mint cinnamon Zen.

3:03:35 I mean Yeah, man.

3:03:39 Uh Nokia asks, "Hey, did you not do the floatplane announcements?" Uh we didn't,

3:03:42 but we also kind of accidentally did cuz apparently the one I was supposed

3:03:45 to highlight this week was Linus interviews

3:03:47 the LTT head of writing about LMG content.

3:03:50 Um so the only thing I have to change is that he asked

3:03:53 me to show the timestamps uh showing what we what we talked through.

3:03:57 So um tech jet, fire truck, uh what we used the jet for, tech house,

3:04:03 uh, first upgrade for the tech house when we're ready to sell,

3:04:06 investing in support, uh, Riley, um, elephants in the room, family vlog,

3:04:11 departures of notable talent, uh,

3:04:13 talking through nostalgia as an reliable strategy, uh, Mr.

3:04:17 Carneys line from, uh, from his speech recently,

3:04:20 becoming more agile, uh, how do we avoid being full corporate,

3:04:24 future of LMG, what about the other channels,

3:04:26 and how do we 10x our media side, how are we 10xing CLU?

3:04:30 So, that's the, uh, that's the topics.

3:04:32 And, uh, Sammy asked if you guys, uh,

3:04:34 leave a comment on that video if you want to give a suggestion

3:04:37 for other leaders at the company that you would like to see.

3:04:41 We've already done Terran, um, James, obviously, and Luke to an extent.

3:04:46 Um, which he might not remember, Sammy predicted that.

3:04:49 And that's that's the one.

3:04:52 Okay, uh.

3:04:53 So, Sammy says Luke really the same.

3:04:55 Luke will probably go, "What video?" And then you're like,

3:04:58 "Bam!" And he'll be like,

3:04:59 "Oh." And then he'll be like, "I was so out of it during this shoot."

3:05:04 I Okay, the the reason why I reacted

3:05:07 that way is cuz you interviewed James on this one.

3:05:09 You didn't interview Nick, Lucas, and I.

3:05:11 No, someone did.

3:05:12 Uh, watch the exclusives either on YouTube

3:05:14 members or at a lower price at lmg.gg/fpwan.

3:05:18 By the way, there's a bunch of people trying to tell me how to install Zen.

3:05:20 That wasn't my point.

3:05:23 I can I can figure it out.

3:05:24 I actually, for the Linux challenge man.

3:05:26 I have super specifically to install Zen?

3:05:31 [laughter] Yeah.

3:05:32 He dodged the hard R incident.

3:05:35 He has full Zen.

3:05:38 It's It's that's my pre-installed Zen.

3:05:40 No, I I've been actually very specific.

3:05:43 I I'm okay with friends giving me input or advice.

3:05:48 Um, but I'm I've been hard ignoring any comments I

3:05:55 see because that seems unfair in regards to the Linux challenge.

3:06:00 Mhm.

3:06:01 [cough] So like I've got a buddy that I've known since I was like 15

3:06:05 who is like a Linux head and will talk to me about Linux stuff sometimes.

3:06:08 I'm like, Is his name a secret?

3:06:09 Can I guess?

3:06:11 I don't think you know this person.

3:06:12 Oh, okay.

3:06:14 Yeah.

3:06:14 Um you can guess, but I don't think you do.

3:06:17 So like I'll I'll talk to them about it,

3:06:19 but like I I'm not going to go out of my way to seek unfair potential input.

3:06:25 And just like let me figure it out, dude.

3:06:29 Yeah.

3:06:29 [clears throat] It's part of the fun.

3:06:32 What?

3:06:34 Yeah.

3:06:33 Hey LTT, you guys have talked about how you liked visiting Taiwan.

3:06:38 I will be visiting later this year.

3:06:39 Is there a place you visited several times

3:06:42 or would like to visit because it's so great?

3:06:45 I just play badminton.

3:06:48 So I just I work all day and then I shuttlecock all night and then I sleep.

3:06:54 You sure do.

3:06:55 Sometimes I go out for late night noodles.

3:06:58 I like spicy noodles.

3:07:01 Yeah.

3:07:01 Uh Sometimes I call Luke and I'm like, "Hey, it's really late,

3:07:05 but I need spicy noodles." And Luke's like, "Yeah, I'm down." [laughter]

3:07:12 Almost every time.

3:07:13 Not technically all, but almost every time.

3:07:16 Uh there's a fun restaurant if I'm assuming you're talking mostly in Taipei.

3:07:20 There's a fun restaurant called Pay My Tuition.

3:07:22 I went there because I thought their name was funny.

3:07:24 And then I actually really liked their food and their vibe was really awesome.

3:07:28 Uh the highest rated Indian food restaurant I've

3:07:30 ever seen in the entire world is in Taipei.

3:07:33 It has 8,248 reviews and is 5.0 stars on Google Maps, Wow.

3:07:39 which is wild.

3:07:40 Uh Wendell showed me this place.

3:07:42 I'm going to butcher the pronunciation.

3:07:44 Oi Oye Punjabi Ethnic Indian Restaurant.

3:07:48 Mhm.

3:07:48 [clears throat] Uh good food.

3:07:51 Nice.

3:07:52 Um 2J Cafe is like one of the vibiest places I've ever been in my life.

3:07:57 Um Don Park is a cool place to go.

3:08:01 Most of my things that I have flagged in Taipei

3:08:03 are restaurants cuz I'm usually trying to go there with people.

3:08:07 Um but the coolest individual thing I've done in Taiwan,

3:08:10 if you want to somehow get yourself out there, um I don't know how to say this.

3:08:15 So, I don't know how to help you find it.

3:08:17 Nice.

3:08:17 Solid.

3:08:18 just called the Leaven.

3:08:19 It's at 605 Taiwan Chiayi County Alishan Township.

3:08:24 Good luck.

3:08:25 Have fun.

3:08:26 It's uh you stay up there for 24 hours and uh you live on a native

3:08:32 reservation in the mountains and you pick tea and you chop down bamboo and use

3:08:38 a a section of the bamboo to make rice and then you incorporate the rice

3:08:41 into making mochi and your dinner and all

3:08:43 these other kinds of things and it's fun.

3:08:44 It's good.

3:08:49 Hey.

3:08:49 Hey.

3:08:50 How has the issues at the tech house been going?

3:08:53 Any big projects coming soon?

3:08:55 Apparently, we're going on Tuesday with an excavator

3:08:58 and we're just going to go ham on the backyard because there's like a stop

3:09:02 work thing while we apply for some permit stuff,

3:09:05 but it doesn't apply to the outside.

3:09:09 Okay.

3:09:08 So, we're just uh Jordan's organizing it and there's a sign-up

3:09:12 sheet with like what tools you have and can bring.

3:09:15 He seems reasonable enough.

3:09:16 I'm sure he called before he's digging.

3:09:18 Uh yes, yes, yes.

3:09:19 BC One Call was informed.

3:09:21 Yeah.

3:09:21 So, we're So, we're just going for it apparently.

3:09:24 Uh the thumbnail will involve me in an excavator.

3:09:26 I'll see you there.

3:09:30 Yeah.

3:09:30 Yeah.

3:09:32 Yeah.

3:09:32 Good luck, everyone.

3:09:35 How do you suggest I deal with a vendor whose

3:09:37 entire software seems vibe coded and doesn't do good QA work?

3:09:42 It's hard being between admin who wrote

3:09:44 the contract without teeth and supporting poor software.

3:09:49 I think you're boned.

3:09:51 Yeah, get out of there.

3:09:52 Uh they can't.

3:09:53 Admin signed up for it.

3:09:56 So, they're just stuck with it.

3:09:58 We've never experienced that.

3:10:01 Really?

3:10:01 Well, what did I What did I sign up for?

3:10:03 This wasn't you.

3:10:04 What did Oh.

3:10:04 Oh.

3:10:07 [laughter] Okay.

3:10:10 Uh I I seek people's input on decisions when I know that I'm over my head.

3:10:15 [laughter] Especially when signing a contract.

3:10:17 I don't sign contracts lightly.

3:10:19 Yeah.

3:10:19 Um I've learned.

3:10:23 I think I don't know.

3:10:25 Seek Seek Oh, man.

3:10:26 Seek it out if you can.

3:10:28 Um so, there is very often early termination Mhm.

3:10:33 stuff, but it might be better to deal with an early

3:10:35 termination fee than to deal with something that's just completely unusable.

3:10:39 Um Yeah.

3:10:44 Cool.

3:10:44 Get in contact with someone who might be able

3:10:46 to make some change and and raise some stink.

3:10:48 Flag all the ways that they've just been really really terrible,

3:10:51 basically, and be like, "Yeah, yeah, we can't work with you guys.

3:10:54 Let us out." And see what happens.

3:10:58 Hey, DL.

3:10:58 I loved the recent video about comparing

3:11:01 the MacBook Neo with other Windows laptops,

3:11:04 but is that video intended to be the full review of the Neo?

3:11:09 No.

3:11:09 Um the Neo launched while I was away for a fairly extended period of time.

3:11:13 So, they did a short circuit while I was gone.

3:11:15 And then the question was, "Okay, well, like,

3:11:16 what kind of MacBook Neo content can we do that would be additive?" And so,

3:11:21 I daily'd it for actually a few weeks.

3:11:23 Now that I think about it, it's been out for a while.

3:11:26 Um and basically from when I got back to like a couple days ago,

3:11:29 I've been daily'ing the Neo.

3:11:31 I really like it overall.

3:11:32 I definitely ran into some some weird issues, but overall really liked it.

3:11:36 And um one of the ideas was MacBook Neo 30-day challenge, but honestly,

3:11:42 it wasn't even enough of like a challenge for me to have that much to say.

3:11:47 And so, it ended up getting rolled into one of the other ideas we had,

3:11:50 which is comparing the Neo to other similarly priced Windows machines.

3:11:55 And um so, what I ended up doing was

3:11:57 just using some of the insight that I gained

3:11:59 dailying the Neo to make a better comparison video

3:12:03 that was just more informed by my own personal experiences.

3:12:06 So, I think I don't know if you're going to get

3:12:07 a full review of the Neo on Linus Tech Tips.

3:12:10 Uh I think that was probably it.

3:12:12 Uh in terms of additional context that I would,

3:12:14 you know, add at this time, not much.

3:12:17 Uh if you're really reliant on, you know, a high-speed external dock,

3:12:20 I would say the Neo can be a bit of a downer.

3:12:23 But, other than that, I just really liked it.

3:12:25 I If I was buying one again, I'd spring for the Touch ID model,

3:12:29 just cuz like going back to Windows Hello and going

3:12:33 back to a MacBook with Touch ID is just plain better.

3:12:39 And you also get more storage.

3:12:40 But really, I when I think it's going to be killer is like Neo 2.

3:12:43 I want the 12 gigs of RAM that supposedly

3:12:46 will be supported with like an A19 Pro.

3:12:49 And uh just a little bit more speed, it's going to be like Neo 2 is going

3:12:54 to be If Apple can keep the price the same-ish, it's just going to slay.

3:12:59 It's just going to be no competition left to fight.

3:13:02 Neo is eating Valve's lunch right now.

3:13:04 If gaming is growing, I'm so confused by that.

3:13:08 No, it's not.

3:13:11 What?

3:13:12 What?

3:13:13 What?

3:13:13 Don't worry about it.

3:13:14 That's not a thing.

3:13:15 What?

3:13:15 What?

3:13:17 No.

3:13:18 What?

3:13:19 No.

3:13:20 Huh?

3:13:20 No.

3:13:21 What?

3:13:22 No.

3:13:22 All right, Dan, what's next?

3:13:25 What?

3:13:24 I'm going to need a couple couple weeks to get over that.

3:13:27 Um will we ever see the return of Tech

3:13:30 Trivia answered in the form of a question?

3:13:33 Miss that show.

3:13:34 Also, why does LTT labs.com have more GPU data on it?

3:13:38 For example, there's a review of the 9060 but no data.

3:13:43 Or why doesn't, they're asking.

3:13:45 Uh that's something they're working on.

3:13:46 They're working on getting all the GPUs on the site

3:13:50 but it just takes time and especially when there's no video demand

3:13:54 for that data then it has to fit in with the articles

3:13:57 and videos and short circuits and everything

3:13:59 that they're supporting behind the scenes.

3:14:01 As for Tech Trivia answered in the form of a question, never.

3:14:05 I felt so bad for everyone who participated in that, all the creators.

3:14:11 The questions were so hard because I was intended to be a participant,

3:14:17 I never got to review them and I was just Basically,

3:14:21 if you go back and watch it through this lens,

3:14:24 you can see me desperately trying to make it not

3:14:29 seem like horrible that nobody knows the answer to anything

3:14:33 and like because the questions were so hard and I

3:14:37 didn't actually know that normally um like on Jeopardy,

3:14:42 you're supposed to like they're primed on what the questions will be about.

3:14:46 It's not random.

3:14:47 Oh, they know like the topics?

3:14:48 Yeah, so they can like study ahead of time and stuff.

3:14:52 Interesting.

3:14:51 Cuz like yeah, otherwise why would anyone

3:14:53 know the exact year of that stupid thing?

3:14:55 Of course that makes sense now in retrospect

3:14:57 but I didn't know that when we were setting

3:14:59 up this thing and apparently neither did any

3:15:01 of our coordinators for this project so like I

3:15:06 mean there's some people that we worked

3:15:08 with on that that I don't think ever worked with us

3:15:09 again and like I was too embarrassed to ask

3:15:12 even people that are like I would say, you know, relatively like friends.

3:15:17 Um like I just didn't even ask them for a long

3:15:19 time because it was just like kind of embarrassing across the board.

3:15:23 Um yeah, it was that was that did not go well.

3:15:29 The the second half of the oh Oh, sorry.

3:15:34 Uh it was about GPUs on the labs website.

3:15:38 Um Sure.

3:15:40 I mean, I'm just going to talk generally about GPUs on the labs website,

3:15:43 so it's probably okay.

3:15:44 Um the labs website is is interesting.

3:15:49 Uh people will read the articles.

3:15:51 Lucas will post them on Reddit,

3:15:53 and then people will see them there and then come read the articles,

3:15:56 and that's all that's all cool and stuff.

3:15:58 Um Nobody looks at the the product pages.

3:16:05 Um The the product pages get We've we've tried

3:16:07 a bunch of different things to make them interesting, but realistically,

3:16:10 I think just like print reviews these days, like, "Hey,

3:16:15 I wonder if there's a reason why all

3:16:17 the written review sites are dying." Uh who knows?

3:16:20 Uh I think we we, you know, might have found out.

3:16:23 So, we're we're figuring out what we actually want to do with this stuff.

3:16:27 The articles have been doing well, like I said.

3:16:29 Um and we we think there's a future in tools,

3:16:34 like the the whole versus mode thing,

3:16:36 um where you can like look at two different

3:16:39 products uh side by side and and see the comparison.

3:16:44 Um This is a a particularly cool part of it.

3:16:49 Um being able to I guess we don't have the size data for one of them,

3:16:52 but uh being able to look at them side by side.

3:16:55 Um GPUs in particular is something that we weren't

3:16:59 uploading for a while uh for long boring reasons.

3:17:04 Um and as some people have noticed,

3:17:05 we have started again uh putting some GPUs up there,

3:17:10 but like uh keeping the product reviews

3:17:14 populated on the site is not a high-level,

3:17:20 high-priority goal for the lab because I think just in 2026, that's not uh

3:17:29 [laughter] a like low-hanging fruit or a particularly

3:17:32 valuable fruit for pretty much anyone.

3:17:35 We are seeing again traction with the articles,

3:17:37 so we've been pursuing that more.

3:17:40 That's that's been kind of fun and and and interesting for us.

3:17:44 More fun and interesting than just farting out

3:17:46 more like just stream of consciousness product reviews.

3:17:52 And also you guys are resonating with it more as well.

3:17:55 So we're kind of reacting to honestly what what you guys want.

3:18:00 We do think some of this is because of search engine stuff with AI, but yeah.

3:18:05 Apparently, no, you do not get information

3:18:07 of any sort ahead of time on Jeopardy.

3:18:09 So I was misinformed.

3:18:11 Oh, all right.

3:18:17 [laughter] Stealing your thunder.

3:18:19 There's some people saying like is this a I lost it,

3:18:24 but somebody somebody basically mentioned is it yeah, is it a discovery problem?

3:18:28 Um Well, we happen to start publishing written articles right around

3:18:32 the same time that written started getting killed by AI.

3:18:37 Yeah, they also said Wirecutter is profitable.

3:18:39 Yeah, Wirecutter is all like when I go to their front page

3:18:43 um we took hundreds of walks to find five dog leashes we love.

3:18:49 Get that affiliate revenue from that mainstream content.

3:18:53 Yeah, that's it's not it's not power supplies.

3:18:57 And also this isn't even a profit play.

3:19:01 The Labs website doesn't have any ads on it.

3:19:03 I don't know I don't know if like so

3:19:04 many of you run ad blocker that you never realized,

3:19:06 but but like there there is this is non-ad blocker.

3:19:10 There's no ads on the Labs site anywhere.

3:19:13 It's no part of this is a is a profit play.

3:19:16 We we made a there's there's information

3:19:19 out there and through usage statistics we kind

3:19:23 of figured out that people uh don't really want to read text reviews in 2026.

3:19:31 So, that's okay.

3:19:32 Uh we also figured out that people are fairly

3:19:35 interested in like the the articles we've been writing.

3:19:37 So, great.

3:19:39 Uh it's just fairly natural like reacting to what people want.

3:19:44 That's it.

3:19:48 Cool.

3:19:47 To Linus, also an adult with braces.

3:19:50 Nice.

3:19:51 I'm happy with how straight my teeth are progressing,

3:19:54 but I'm bummed about the things I no longer eat for fear of breaking a bracket.

3:20:00 Are there foods you now avoid?

3:20:02 Nope.

3:20:03 I was always a completely non-compliant client.

3:20:07 I would eat popcorn.

3:20:09 I've I've chewed chewing gum with these because I'm crazy.

3:20:13 Uh I eat apples.

3:20:14 I um For me, the only real obstacle

3:20:17 is like pain because these brackets sit super proud,

3:20:21 these stupid ceramic braces that I hate.

3:20:24 Um but in terms of like going easy, man, I'll eat corn on the cob.

3:20:28 It's just it's it's like creamed corn at that point cuz

3:20:31 you're just you're kind of mashing it from both sides, you know?

3:20:37 Double chew.

3:20:39 Hey L L D, I am the head of engineering at a drone show

3:20:43 company that did a 1,000 drone show

3:20:45 for the YouTube creator conference last week.

3:20:47 Are you Heard you were there and wanted to know your thoughts.

3:20:51 Yeah, why have my thoughts when you can have my video that I recorded of it?

3:20:57 Here, where is it?

3:21:00 I think I think this will do.

3:21:03 Oh, yeah, here we go, bud.

3:21:04 Here, I'll send this over to you, okay, Dan?

3:21:06 Uh sure.

3:21:08 Cool.

3:21:08 In the meantime, let's do another one while we wait for file downloads and such.

3:21:13 Hi Linus and Luke.

3:21:15 What's your favorite board game to play on a game night?

3:21:17 You should check out the Pac-Man board game corridor.

3:21:20 Such a great Such a great time.

3:21:22 Anyway, thanks for the free shipping.

3:21:23 That was fun.

3:21:25 And it's not close.

3:21:27 Sorry, board game?

3:21:29 Yep.

3:21:28 They have a board game?

3:21:30 Yep.

3:21:30 Oh, cool.

3:21:31 It's so good, actually.

3:21:33 8.7 on BoardGameGeek, which Totally unbiased Luke take cuz he, you know,

3:21:38 would normally hate anything Slay the Spire.

3:21:40 Oh, it definitely definitely Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

3:21:44 Uh one one to four players.

3:21:44 It's co-op.

3:21:45 It's really good.

3:21:47 Um it it gets each player involved.

3:21:50 Um That's cool.

3:21:51 I'm not surprised.

3:21:51 It's It's pretty highly rated.

3:21:54 Um everyone that I know that has played it,

3:21:57 including people that have never played the video game,

3:22:00 including people that don't even like video games,

3:22:03 every single person has liked it.

3:22:05 That's cool.

3:22:07 Uh I play whatever my kids like.

3:22:09 They've been really into Munchkin lately.

3:22:11 Um which is pretty basic, you know,

3:22:13 as far as like being into cool board games go,

3:22:17 but uh yeah, they they enjoy the heck out of it.

3:22:20 Um Uh we like uh we like Clank as a family as well.

3:22:24 That one's fun.

3:22:25 Um Cards.

3:22:30 The thing that uh that I get the most

3:22:32 requests for from my kids is let's play Hearts.

3:22:34 Um I got them into it a little while ago, and it's it's such a good game.

3:22:38 It's uh just the the Things can get

3:22:42 heated sometimes around the Queen of Spades, though.

3:22:45 People who play will know.

3:22:50 Ready for that video?

3:22:50 If you guys are you can throw up the video.

3:22:53 Let's see.

3:22:53 What do I do?

3:22:54 I think it's go now.

3:22:55 Recorded horizontally because I'm not an animal.

3:22:59 And I don't have audio on.

3:23:00 That's fine.

3:23:01 That's That's good.

3:23:02 is this?

3:23:03 Uh it's a drone show.

3:23:06 You may want to Oh, is there a way to Yeah.

3:23:09 play it back faster?

3:23:10 I can I can take it through.

3:23:11 Oh, well, okay.

3:23:13 Uh so yeah, this was cool.

3:23:15 I was amazed at how stable they were.

3:23:19 Look how flipping stable these are.

3:23:24 Yeah.

3:23:26 Pretty cool.

3:23:27 So yeah, they did uh they did a drone show

3:23:30 and it basically probably the coolest one was the globe,

3:23:33 but I don't think I caught that one.

3:23:34 Here they are reconfiguring.

3:23:35 They did a Nyan Cat.

3:23:37 This one's pretty cool.

3:23:38 Let me let it play for a second.

3:23:39 Yeah, it it just looks really bad.

3:23:41 Yeah, when you don't let it play.

3:23:43 Yeah.

3:23:45 Yeah.

3:23:44 Uh I I had never seen one before.

3:23:46 This was my first time.

3:23:48 Uh it was it was cooler than I expected.

3:23:53 And I really liked the way that they kind

3:23:55 of had you watch the transitions between the different things,

3:24:01 but you would have you like you'd have to be clairvoyant to you know,

3:24:05 realize exactly what they were going to be going for on the next one.

3:24:08 Yeah, it was it was very cool.

3:24:09 They had they had a couple different things.

3:24:11 They had someone um on one of those like like with a a jet thing

3:24:17 on their hands and then one on their back like in a like a jet suit.

3:24:20 So he kind of flew around a little bit.

3:24:22 And then they had skydivers that um dropped out of a plane.

3:24:26 They had like sparklers behind them as they like

3:24:29 came down through the sky and then they deployed

3:24:31 their parachutes and then they like ripped like right

3:24:33 over our heads and landed in the field there.

3:24:35 So it was like yeah, it was a pretty it was a pretty cool show.

3:24:39 Wow.

3:24:40 Hey yeah, Linus, time to finally use my gift cards.

3:24:42 He also brought out Oprah.

3:24:45 What?

3:24:44 To do a talk.

3:24:45 Yeah.

3:24:46 I mean, she's the OG content creator.

3:24:48 Think about it.

3:24:51 She started just in like local news and made her what

3:24:55 built her built her empire into her own show, her own network.

3:24:59 And she recently joined YouTube.

3:25:00 So it's pretty on topic.

3:25:02 So we have Oprah to blame for shorts.

3:25:04 Mm I would say I would say domino meme?

3:25:08 I [laughter] would say not so much.

3:25:09 Sounds like it to me.

3:25:10 Oh, Oprah goes on TV, dominoes fall down.

3:25:14 Now we are talking about disabling shorts with a timer.

3:25:17 Are you looking up Oprah's channel?

3:25:18 Yes.

3:25:19 I did.

3:25:19 Yeah.

3:25:21 Yeah.

3:25:21 Did you mog Oprah?

3:25:23 You have more subscribers than Oprah.

3:25:25 Well, yeah, for now.

3:25:27 Oh.

3:25:27 Plus ratio.

3:25:29 Woah.

3:25:30 Her view counts are all over the place.

3:25:34 Wow.

3:25:34 Oh yeah, you got 1 million next 4.5 thousand, 1 million, 2.8 thousand.

3:25:40 2.3 million.

3:25:44 [snorts] Yeah, like all over the place.

3:25:46 I I don't think I've ever seen a channel with a spread like that.

3:25:49 And not like to be clear, I've seen channels that have one video with 5

3:25:52 million views and then like a bunch with 500 views,

3:25:55 like where they had like one viral hit.

3:25:57 But the fact that she goes between like functionally

3:26:01 zero views and millions of views from one up to the next.

3:26:05 Yeah, I was thinking like, okay, did this did go gentle or whatever,

3:26:09 did they like buy a bunch of views on that?

3:26:11 But then this one?

3:26:13 Yep.

3:26:13 2.5 for there?

3:26:16 Yep.

3:26:16 It's just all over the place, man.

3:26:18 Funky.

3:26:20 Yeah.

3:26:20 Okay.

3:26:20 Okay.

3:26:21 Okay.

3:26:21 This is This doesn't matter, but oh,

3:26:24 it's just a little bit weird that it's always the third video in.

3:26:30 Oh.

3:26:32 Okay.

3:26:33 Okay, not always.

3:26:34 Oh yeah, one once it broke off.

3:26:36 Yep, okay.

3:26:37 But it has like the same cadence for when it'll just pop off.

3:26:41 pops once in a while.

3:26:44 It's like roughly every four videos they go from single digit thousands.

3:26:50 It's clips.

3:26:52 Oh, is it?

3:26:54 Interesting.

3:26:56 So the main line Yeah, the main it's the long videos.

3:27:00 Okay.

3:27:01 So yeah, 46 minutes and it gets 2.3 million views and then

3:27:06 these little cuts of that video get only a few views.

3:27:11 So, this is LMG Clips but Oprah.

3:27:14 Basically.

3:27:15 Got it.

3:27:16 not super obvious without looking at the length

3:27:18 or the view count which one is the primary video.

3:27:21 So, this one's an hour, 2.5 million views.

3:27:23 Got it.

3:27:24 as a podcast and they're not actually listening to YouTube?

3:27:28 Maybe.

3:27:29 They're listening to the podcast.

3:27:31 Maybe.

3:27:31 I don't know.

3:27:31 Cuz our WAN Show playlist on the LTT channel is a podcast.

3:27:35 a separate podcast tab.

3:27:37 Wouldn't that have podcast in it?

3:27:38 So, go to the Oprah podcast, 74 episodes.

3:27:41 And those should be the same videos.

3:27:44 Because a podcast they are just a type of playlist.

3:27:49 Yeah, they totally are.

3:27:50 So, this is going out to RSS feeds.

3:27:52 So, heard podcast is Podcast is very popular.

3:27:55 Got it.

3:27:57 That makes sense.

3:28:03 Okay.

3:28:02 Sorry to hear that, Wiley Giraffe.

3:28:05 They have to go be social instead of hanging in watching my show.

3:28:08 Disgusting.

3:28:08 Sorry.

3:28:09 Sorry.

3:28:09 going to ban Sorry for your loss.

3:28:13 [laughter] Don't come back.

3:28:13 Okay.

3:28:14 Hey Linus, time to finally use my gift cards.

3:28:16 Is there something that you know your team could improve but it's never going

3:28:20 to be profitable or marketable for it being just too niche or too specialized?

3:28:30 Um I don't know.

3:28:30 Our posture?

3:28:33 I think they meant Like products.

3:28:37 Like Oh, oh, oh, like the CW team.

3:28:40 Yeah.

3:28:40 Uh oh.

3:28:41 So, so a chair then.

3:28:43 Yeah.

3:28:44 Yeah, thank you for that.

3:28:45 Like sandals?

3:28:46 I think that we could improve the desk pads and um and no one would care.

3:28:53 You can ever so slightly,

3:28:55 because it stretches in one direction but not the other direction.

3:28:59 You can ever so slightly detect if you like kind of press hard and move

3:29:02 a thing that it's like a little bit oval tracking, like a little bit.

3:29:06 Um and literally after all these years

3:29:08 of us selling hundreds of thousands of desk pads,

3:29:11 no one's ever noticed or cared.

3:29:14 Um so yeah, we could do it and no one will care.

3:29:16 So we we had a we had talked about

3:29:18 in the early days of You're going to get complaints now.

3:29:20 Yeah, whatever.

3:29:21 Get over it.

3:29:21 the whole time.

3:29:22 I knew something was off.

3:29:25 No, YEP, YEP, YEP.

3:29:28 [laughter] IN THE EARLY DAYS of Kyle being here,

3:29:29 we'd talked about doing like a pro cloth desk pad that was either the same

3:29:35 stretch in both axes or no stretch and just kind of never got to it.

3:29:42 Linus, how is the team liking the the new Ubiquiti EV chargers?

3:29:47 I just got a Toyota bZ and am in the market for getting level two chargers.

3:29:53 I mean, this I think the team likes any charger they

3:29:55 get to use at the office because they don't pay for it.

3:30:01 [laughter] They seem fine so far.

3:30:03 Is there any new screen tech to replace OLED?

3:30:07 If not, what options exist for iPhone 11 users,

3:30:12 me, sensitive to PWM flicker who prefer Apple's ecosystem.

3:30:16 iPhone 17 is a no-go.

3:30:18 OLED causes headaches {slash} nausea.

3:30:21 Wow, that's that's rough, dude, cuz on mobile everything's going OLED.

3:30:25 I have heard of this.

3:30:28 Um Yikes, like micro LED, I know Apple was putting a bunch of investment

3:30:34 into that supposedly maybe for the Apple Watch at some point.

3:30:38 seen these?

3:30:41 Um I have seen things that do that, not from that company.

3:30:49 Like like a a a no you know Yeah.

3:30:54 I have seen displays.

3:30:56 Super modern being shown just to developers right now.

3:31:00 I wasn't sure if you'd seen or heard of it.

3:31:02 Um yeah, it's definitely a thing from other brands.

3:31:04 I haven't seen theirs though.

3:31:05 Okay.

3:31:06 Okay.

3:31:08 Um But the reason why I asked you in that way

3:31:10 was I didn't know if it was public or not.

3:31:12 Yeah, I'm not sure.

3:31:12 Yeah, so.

3:31:13 Man, and even micro LED,

3:31:15 like I wonder if you'd have the same kind of PWM control flicker.

3:31:19 I I feel for you, man.

3:31:22 I I'm sorry.

3:31:22 I wish I had an answer for you.

3:31:25 The last one I have today is DLL.

3:31:29 The hoodies I got the past few years have really

3:31:31 come in handy during my first winter here in northern Sweden.

3:31:35 I think it's pronounced hey.

3:31:38 Age.

3:31:40 [laughter] Nice.

3:31:42 Any new designs coming with the same hoodie as the circuit tree one?

3:31:46 I love that.

3:31:49 Ooh.

3:31:50 Ooh.

3:31:50 Yeah, that's the funny one that was a tree that was a circuit.

3:31:52 The circuit tree.

3:31:54 Um hmm.

3:31:55 I thought they just didn't know how

3:31:56 to spell it and they meant the framework one.

3:31:59 No, yeah, not that one.

3:32:00 but I got you.

3:32:01 Just because they're foreign.

3:32:03 Yeah, so Just canceled.

3:32:08 Just because they spelled hey wrong?

3:32:10 Yeah.

3:32:12 [laughter] Yeah.

3:32:11 Yeah.

3:32:13 Isn't this one just our blank?

3:32:15 I think so.

3:32:16 Pretty sure.

3:32:17 Yeah, I'm I'm pretty sure that um any colored blank hoodie should be this one.

3:32:27 It's funny that that's the one you like so much cuz I

3:32:29 I'd say it's one of the less unique ones that we have.

3:32:33 Uh-oh, is our site down?

3:32:37 Hmm?

3:32:40 Oh, okay.

3:32:40 We've been having some minor Wi-Fi issues.

3:32:44 Oh.

3:32:43 Brilliant.

3:32:44 Okay, tops.

3:32:46 So [snorts] man, I'm afraid to say something wrong.

3:32:50 Message support just in case, but I'm pretty sure this is literally it.

3:32:56 This is the circuitry hoodie, but without the circuit tree.

3:33:00 Um so, it's just our our blank hoodie for 60 CAD,

3:33:05 and I believe the same one should be obtainable.

3:33:09 Oh, yeah, I guess we just never did any other prints on it.

3:33:12 So, yeah, pick up the blank hoodie.

3:33:15 Neat.

3:33:16 Good chat.

3:33:17 That's all I got.
