Adam Savage Unboxes Star Trek's USS Enterprise Refit Model!

0:07 Oh my I can't this I'm looking forward to this for so long.

0:11 I'm going to peel behind the curtain and say that as we're filming

0:13 this you and I uh a week ago we were in traveling the whole week.

0:17 Yeah, we're off site and this package from Tomy their Enterprise the motion

0:23 picture the refit enterprise the 1350

0:25 at scale arrived the Friday before we left.

0:28 No, the Friday.

0:30 And so we the whole week of

0:32 knowing it was there.

0:35 Yeah.

0:34 So we're getting it all out today.

0:36 Um like I said, this is the motion picture enterprise.

0:40 We first saw the prototype of this 18 months ago or so.

0:43 Yeah.

0:43 Yeah.

0:44 Chris from Tomy uh came with the the prototype which was like it wasn't diecast.

0:49 No.

0:49 But we asked them, you can watch a video, we'll link to it,

0:51 but like the the challenge of going from the TV show Enterprise,

0:56 which has its own challenges, they they did the saucer separation,

1:00 but the paint just the paint challenge

1:01 of going from that airbrush look to the iridescent

1:09 of what was in the motion picture.

1:10 And afterward, I we didn't know if they could do it.

1:13 It's it's where we learned that they do temple printing.

1:16 Yep.

1:16 For a lot of that stuff and working with, you know,

1:19 a lot of experts in the uh Star Trek model ship space.

1:24 They found the paints and they built the the tooling.

1:28 This and this is one of the hardest models out there.

1:31 Like there's like the the the field of replica spaceships is three decades

1:37 of people who've lost their shirts attempting to make this kind of object.

1:41 Yeah.

1:41 Not only as a complete thing.

1:42 This is a not a kit.

1:44 It's a finished model which we'll we'll get there real soon.

1:46 But even like the kits, right, the polar lights kits is still like the standard.

1:50 And there are some great model makers who do commissions all the time to turn

1:55 the polariz kit into something that looks like

1:57 a filming miniature with all the lights and all.

1:59 I didn't realize that.

2:00 Oh, that's great.

2:00 It's a great business for, you know, experienced model maker to do,

2:03 but you know, most people don't have that time or that money.

2:05 And to remind folks, when they launched this as a like limited time campaign,

2:10 which we told you about.

2:11 Yeah, we did.

2:12 It was 700.

2:13 700 bucks to receive this this this object.

2:18 So, I think I'm going to table it this way.

2:54 which was even like it cost costs even less than this.

3:00 I think the paint job is beautiful.

3:01 The lights are beautiful, but it requires batteries.

3:03 It requires batteries in both the primary and secondary hole.

3:08 Yeah.

3:08 To turn on.

3:08 Yeah.

3:08 And

3:09 so we never have it lit up because it just

3:11 it'll drain the battery and you can't display it with battery in

3:14 and the design of that ship's harder to hide

3:16 the seams and so the screw covers were,

3:18 you know, a little more visible.

3:20 Um the stand was, you know, very present, right?

3:24 And servicing prop collectors is difficult.

3:26 They these objects are hard to replicate by by design.

3:30 Uh ooh good smells, good good volatile organic compounds.

3:35 Oh.

3:38 Woo.

3:41 Let's take a look.

3:43 So, we can already see it.

3:44 And I hope the camera can see Aztec.

3:47 It's like many, many layers cuz it's different tones.

3:51 I see two or three different

3:52 colors layered in multiple different modalities overlaps.

3:57 The crispness of the the just the decal work, right?

4:01 Or the printing work on on the registry.

4:05 That's hard to align, right?

4:07 the red around the the bold letters.

4:10 That's the stand.

4:11 So, we'll need that for sure.

4:13 This gets lifted up.

5:46 so I have a good sense of where things go.

5:54 and so this is the contact point.

5:55 This is just plastic.

5:56 It's not soft plastic or anything.

5:58 So, I I don't think it's going to scrape or damage the bottom of the hole,

6:01 but you can certainly put a little bit of moles skin or

6:04 or just a little pad on there.

6:29 I think for example, if we take and remove the struts, I'm just going to go

6:36 I'm sure part of this is like liability if they're they're lawyers, right?

6:43 but it leans just a leans forward.

6:50 when I first saw people trying without this, I was wondering,

6:54 you know, Adam, maybe we could like maybe it's a tolerance issue in here.

7:02 but you really kind of want to take this whole thing and move it though

7:05 and tilt it back because there are contact points, right?

7:08 They're electrical contacts to get power to the lights here.

7:11 Uh people have what they've done is they've done exactly like

7:16 what you thought of they've designed and cut up an a base

7:20 that pitch the whole base.

7:21 Ah that's great.

7:22 So the base is pitched back but the ship is level.

7:26 I think for our purposes let's leave the struts.

9:03 their bonus extra model were a little shuttle craft right

9:07 that you could put inside.

9:09 they they've they've included the

9:11 the Surak here uh because it's that scene.

9:13 It's the scene when Kirk and Scotty, you know,

9:16 Kirk and Scotty fly around the dry dock and they kind of like they behold

9:20 the ship and then uh Spot comes and I

9:24 guess this can separate and it docks, right?

9:28 No.

9:29 Oh, and he's able to walk right onto the bridge.

9:31 Yeah.

9:31 Yeah.

9:32 So, that's the I think I would also have been happy

9:35 with some extra shuttle craft or something um to plug into the the shuttle bay.

9:41 But this is very nice.

10:18 having we have a light right there just to light us but still watch it graze

10:23 the top of the paneling.

10:25 This one, it makes us want to get up close and get real level,

10:28 do those cinematic, the probe lens to get right up close.

11:56 One, we were curious about the diffusion.

12:00 When he brought the prototype, we could see the hot spots.

12:04 In the nay cells.

12:05 They they address that perfectly.

12:07 It looks continuous.

12:07 Yeah, it looks absolutely continuous.

12:09 It's a really nice glow.

12:10 And also like you have the lights here.

12:12 Just look at how much how much blinking is going.

12:15 Navigational lights.

12:16 You got blinking there.

12:17 And honestly, these are beautiful lights.

12:20 They're they're saturated.

12:22 They're like Yeah.

12:23 They just You see?

12:25 You got your green and the red.

12:28 It just it feels alive.

13:06 was they're clearly trying to emulate that dry dock, right?

13:10 So Doug Trumbull's talked about, you know,

13:12 when you watch that really slow meandering amazing sequence of Kirk

13:17 and Scotty flying around the ship because it's the refit.

13:21 You never as a fan

13:22 scale.

13:22 So much scale.

13:23 You never saw the Enterprise looks this way.

13:25 It was a transformed ship.

13:28 They lit that.

13:28 It's was enshrouded in a dock which had like this like like panel lighting.

13:35 Yeah.

13:33 And they use a lot of um dental mirrors, right?

13:37 Spotlights on dental mirrors.

13:38 Do they really

13:39 to get very precise individual lights and I think

13:43 they're trying to emulate that with these spots here.

13:46 They do a lot towards adding a kind of a dry dock sort of scale to it.

13:51 Notice in the back of the ship.

13:55 Yeah.

13:54 They also did it.

13:55 It's harder to see in this light

13:57 by adding translucency panels and lighting from the inside.

14:03 So,

14:04 just to get a little more

14:06 That's to emulate a light coming at it.

14:09 Wow.

14:09 But they're simulating because you're not going to get a light from your Right.

14:13 That's amazing.

14:16 The non-dcast portion,

14:18 they can have just a little bit of translucency in the plastic

14:21 and light it from the inside to light make it look

14:23 That's incredible.

14:33 They're like, you know,

14:33 there there people patching it up and and and and and making it their own.

14:37 Someone's like released 3D printed files of Shuttlecraft that you can print out,

14:41 which I definitely will at some point,

14:43 but these lights here,

14:46 someone pointed out that they wanted them to look more like actual spotlights,

14:50 right?

14:50 And so they link to, and I'll include a link.

15:31 make a little 3D printed black something that holds it right there.

15:35 Just like Yeah, that's kind of great.

15:39 If you have this and just focus the light and just have it

15:43 as a spot right above there where it says United Federation of Planets,

15:48 then it looks like a light coming from

15:50 It really does.

15:51 Looks much more than just like an LED.

15:53 It looks like a an actual stage element.

15:56 That is so beautiful.

15:58 So this is a cool like fan moment.

16:01 that I think really like to see it in person I think it really does add

16:06 totally adds a bunch of scale.

16:08 It adds that like specific like angular

16:11 light right there 10 degree angle right there.

16:14 Dude, they had to Aztec every bloody surface of this thing.

16:18 And as I'm looking at it, just the idea of how many notebooks were filled

16:21 with this panel gets this treatment just exhaust me.

16:24 This is amazing.

16:27 And you as you were picking it up, it's it's hefty, right?

16:30 It's substantial and feels great.

16:32 Like it gives me actually the substance

16:35 of it gives me confidence about displaying it.

16:37 These are these are nice hearty models.

16:42 The the LEDs will last a long time.

16:45 Uh from what I've read and understood,

16:47 if we leave it on like this, it has a six-hour cycle

16:52 after six hours.

16:53 That's very respectable.

16:53 So, you know, you you come home, the sun's setting,

16:56 you turn it on, and then have this be

16:58 your mood lighting for your your living room,

17:00 or you know, that's when the prop party's over.

17:02 Exactly.

17:03 Everyone's going home.

17:03 The Enterprise is going to sleep.

17:07 Yeah.

17:06 What a thing.

17:09 I I'm looking specifically.

17:11 So, there's this thing I I want to talk about in address.

17:15 As you're looking at this and I'm looking at this,

17:17 I could not be happier with how Yeah.

17:19 this thing turned out.

17:20 Um, some people who've received theirs have

17:23 noticed uh light leaks under the saucer section.

17:26 And I actually don't see any.

17:27 It would be right here.

17:28 Oh, that's where they've been seeing them.

17:29 No, I don't see any there.

17:30 This red navigational light.

17:33 Yeah.

17:32 And up.

17:32 Let me see in the front.

17:34 I've seen pictures of it.

17:35 I don't see like it would be visible, but none none on this model.

17:40 Okay.

17:40 Uh, so

17:42 but some people have been finding they they light leaks

17:45 and they've reached out to customer support and it's been a whole

17:48 thing where Tommy will take them back and we'll patch them up.

17:51 Wow, that's great.

17:52 That's great that they'll do that.

17:54 Uh, other people who have more maybe more experience with modeling,

17:57 they recommend like there's a Valo, you know, spot putty.

18:02 Get, you know, you just wipe it on with a damp cloth and it also once it dries,

18:06 it should match the color of this.

18:16 This is so beautiful.

18:18 This was the one I I know the original Enterprise like people love.

18:22 We saw this one that Smithsonian the filming model they just discovered,

18:26 you know, a couple years ago the this miniature one.

18:29 Yeah.

18:29 Um, but like the whole 80s like what motion picture was 79 79 79

18:36 throughout the 80s all six original Star Trek movies

18:41 this style was the style of the Enterprise and Enterprise A.

18:45 Yeah.

18:44 And I just love the Aztec here.

18:47 This this tells me a very specific era not only

18:49 of like of of science fiction but of Star Trek.

18:52 It really is.

18:53 And it's just it's beautiful.

18:55 The way it kicks light, the form of it.

18:57 It's a gorgeous form.

18:59 Uh the lighting in here, it's my hat is off to them, man.

19:03 This is a hard model to get right.

19:05 And we're doing a lot of Yeah, we're doing a lot cuz it's really fun to do that.

19:10 Honestly, the crispness of the decals is so impressive.

19:14 Yeah, the printing right.

19:15 It's absolutely right.

19:16 Yeah, it's probably tempo printed, right?

19:30 Uh, also they've I love the uh the blinking

19:34 lights and that they don't perfectly match this one.

19:39 Yeah, they haven't done the fully lazy sequence.

19:43 Irregular light patterns, the size of the lights,

19:47 the softness of the interior lights, all that communicates scale.

19:52 Dude, have you looked into the cargo into the the the uh

19:56 the shuttle bay?

19:57 It's an impressive

19:58 light.

19:59 Oh, that's nice, too.

20:01 There's nice shadow from from the ceiling lights there.

20:11 What is this like 300 scale?

20:14 That's pretty standard.

20:14 Now, I don't think they're going to do 350 for the Enterprise D.

20:18 Enterprise D is that would be bigger than this table at 1350 at scale.

20:22 So they might have to fuss that with, you know,

20:24 I think 1800 or 6, you know, 600 800,000 is is common there.

20:28 Uh they haven't announced at this point what

20:30 their campaign is going to be this year.

20:31 They did the the D7 Klingon Birds of Prey last year.

20:35 Um every project feels like they're getting more experience with, you know,

20:41 Star Trek, uh making their ships.

20:43 I would love the Relant.

20:45 Oh my gosh.

20:45 So, I I want to say like sitting back here, the light here isn't that dim.

20:50 Yeah.

20:50 The light in this room.

20:51 And the lights are showing up really nice and strongly.

20:54 Um they're also not not every light looks exactly the same, right?

21:00 As you move across it, there are different levels of brightness,

21:02 which feels like they're realistic windows.

21:05 Uh it's just as a as a lit element, it's really really nicely balanced.

21:11 I think even color temperature

21:13 there's slight difference in what's here in the saucer

21:16 and what's what's in the secondary hall.

21:18 It's a little colder here up here too.

21:20 This is different than this.

21:21 It's different than this.

21:22 There's a thing we got uh we sat with John John Null

21:27 uh months ago for a lunch thing and one of the questions we

21:31 were talking about models and and and Wonderfest and he asked you

21:34 know in your mind's eye what the color in Star Wars of Star

21:38 Destroyer lights and I said oh warm warm white he said no if

21:42 you look at them they're they're all cold white but in your mind

21:44 you think they're warm because of the models that you built

21:47 with the incandescent lights and I think it's the same I don't know

21:52 what using the filming model, right?

21:54 The filming model for the Enterprise refit was colder,

21:57 but this feels right from a watching the movie on TV

22:02 and what a model of the ship should look like.

22:04 I think even you you've lighted on what makes it so difficult to make props

22:07 at this scale for the collecting community specifically because

22:11 you're trying to service the mental image everybody has,
