3:56 It's my favorite version of WoW.

3:59 But Burning Crusade, that first patch, while it has like some,

4:04 you know, it's it's it's got some cool things about it, right?

4:09 Karazhan is cool and, you know,

4:11 you're hitting level 70 and all that, but that first patch,

4:13 man, going from like splitting 25 man raids to 10 man raid,

4:17 it's super annoying, right?

4:18 Like it's an uneven split and it's just super weird.

4:21 When you go on to full-on 25man raids,

4:24 I think tier five is whenever Burning Crusade really gets

4:26 the ball rolling and it really kicks into high gear.

4:28 So, um I'm excited, but I still haven't done any of my atunements.

4:36 Um I kind of have the the SSE atunement done,

4:40 but the Tempest keep atunement is kind of a long one.

4:45 we're going to try and run through as much of the atunement today as we can.

10:52 I feel like I mean we're playing you know Burning Crusade

10:54 here but I've been kind of like thinking a lot about

10:58 classic plus and like what people want to do with classic

11:00 plus and everybody's always going to have like a different opinion

11:04 but man to me it's just this is this is like

11:08 having the class design discussion kind of start here I think

11:12 is super important because one of the things is like one

11:19 of the things with classic WoW And it really starts in vanilla.

11:28 It starts in vanilla,

11:29 but like there's there's a certain way that they design everything

11:34 and it's all kind of I always say it's like based in roleplay.

11:37 Everything kind of makes sense.

11:39 And I think that's really like where that class fantasy kind of comes in.

11:43 And each class has like a different sort of distinct design to them.

11:48 So, like in in vanilla,

11:52 every single class is very different than every single other class.

11:58 And I think that's super important when

12:00 you're talking about the design of Classic Plus.

12:02 I think in Classic Plus, if they overhomogenize the classes too much,

12:06 then you're kind of looking at the same sort of design principles of Retail WoW,

12:10 where everybody has a kick,

12:12 everybody has a cool down of everybody has a DPS cool down,

12:14 everybody has this, everybody has that.

12:16 And I don't think that's very good.

12:18 I think that kind of goes against what

12:19 the core philosophy of classic WoW really is.

12:22 And I think if they were to make a new MMO,

12:25 if they're to make Classic Plus and the purpose of it is to have

12:29 the same sort of design principles of classic

12:32 WoW or like any sort of classic MMO,

12:34 you're really going to lose that feeling off the rip.

12:38 I think it's super super important.

12:40 So, like while you don't need to go as far as what they had in the uh

12:46 in the classic alpha where like

12:48 in the classic WoW original classic WoW alpha beta,

12:51 they had some things that were very different than what made it on release.

12:53 Like for example, the Torin, they didn't even have mounts.

12:56 One of their racials was like planes running where they they didn't

13:00 have mounts cuz the RP was they were too heavy for any mounts,

13:03 but if they ran in one direction for 3 seconds,

13:05 then they got like a mount speed boost.

13:09 kind of a cool idea, but then they realize where,

13:11 okay, this is like kind of not feasible.

13:14 Like it gets to a point where you're like, okay, well,

13:16 you can't really do everything 100% based in RP,

13:19 but that's really where the discussion needs to begin.

13:22 So, I think that if you start moving

13:23 away from from like the vanilla burning crusade principles,

13:27 there were some pretty big class reworks that happened in Wrath

13:30 of the Lich King that I think made all the classes really really strong,

13:34 but also it it really started to like tighten down that design philosophy.

13:40 And I'm talking specifically about like a lot

13:41 of the a lot of the talents and stuff like that.

13:44 That's why whenever I do whenever I talk about classic WoW talents,

13:47 a lot of times I'm talking about Burning Crusade as a starting point.

13:50 That's not to say you couldn't use any of the talents that are in Wrath,

13:53 but if you try and mash Wrath into classic,

13:56 then I think you have a major power creep issue, uh,

14:00 specifically I think you have a major

14:01 power creep issue specifically starting, uh,

14:04 or that's particularly high at the starting point cuz you're always going

14:08 to have to manage power creep with new items and stuff like that.

14:12 But you have to be careful about what your starting point is

14:14 and how you balance the game around these different talents, you know.

14:28 So, I would really like to see and and like I said,

14:30 I'm going to work on a series of videos where we go through all

14:33 the different classes and look at the different talent trees and uh kind of come

14:36 up with what we think or like what I'm I want to do like what

14:40 I would think like a a proper classic plus paladin talent tree should look like.

14:45 I think for the most part with some

14:46 minor changes and redesigns of certain things,

14:49 I think that you you take Burning Crusade and mash it down to level 60 talents.

14:54 Okay, that's the starting point.

14:56 That doesn't mean you don't change anything.

14:57 That doesn't mean you don't go up or you don't go down a little bit.

15:00 That's a starting point.

15:01 I think that the uh again from a design standpoint.

15:07 What should be done is you should be looking at what

15:12 are the different types of play styles in the game.

15:17 What is the emergent gameplay that has come about from the player base?

15:21 How do people like playing those classes in classic?

15:26 You know, if you are a paladin, you have the shockadin.

15:31 You know, you have the holy paladin, the traditional healer,

15:33 you have the traditional tank, traditional DPS, right?

15:35 But within that there's like different types of builds.

15:38 So the shockadin which is like the spell power holy paladin who's

15:42 you know trying to do damage do burst damage PvP type of stuff.

15:47 You have the holy reckoning which is like the reckoning

15:50 healing variant or r reckoning which is the DPS variant.

15:54 You have retribution which is like the deep

15:56 you know melee DPS build but then you

15:58 can also like do like a PvP variant of it or a PvE variant of it.

16:02 Um, you can even call back to like the original classic WoW talents,

16:08 like the 1.1 talents.

16:10 And in these 1.1 talents, how people used to play Paladin before the version

16:14 of Paladin that we see in classic WoW today in 2019,

16:17 whatever, there was something called the TSPEC.

16:20 And the tri-spec was like a very popular sort of one spec

16:24 to do it all world PVP kind of classic roleplay type of build,

16:30 which is not the most efficient.

16:32 It wasn't really good in PvE.

16:33 It wasn't really good uh like for like throughput,

16:37 but what it was good at is it was really good in PvP and it

16:40 was like a fun build where you can do a little bit of tanking,

16:42 a little bit of DPS.

16:43 Uh you you had like good healing capability.

16:46 It was just generally speaking a a strong build for like

16:49 a solo player running out in the world world PVP scenario.

16:53 And I think that is very very important.

16:55 I think it's super important to take

16:58 these uh existing play styles and promote them,

17:05 you know, do things to make those things playable even more so,

17:09 but also maybe even calling back to like some other

17:12 play styles or or really enabling some more different play styles,

17:15 especially for hybrids.

17:17 Um, you know, people talk about like restokin for druid.

17:22 you know, you really want to play if you're a hybrid class,

17:26 you should be actually this goes for everybody.

17:27 You should play your class, not your spec.

17:30 And that is a that is a primary point

17:33 of emphasis whenever you're talking about classic WoW class design.

17:37 Uh like I I'm fortunate enough to have had

17:39 the opportunity to talk to a lot of people.

17:41 I'm fortunate enough to have had the opportunity

17:42 to talk to a lot of people over the years

17:44 like Kevin Jordan who was the original class designer

17:46 of Vanilla WoW or like Jeff Kaplan more recently,

17:50 you know, John Stats, Mark Kern,

17:52 a lot of these guys who developed original Vanilla WoW

17:55 and kind of hear what they think about the game, right?

17:58 And hear kind of the way that they designed the game originally.

18:02 And obviously I I mean I obviously don't know anything but like talking

18:06 to these guys it's just so enlightening because everything kind of feels like

18:11 a lot of times people think Vanilla WoW was like a happy accident

18:15 but in reality so many things well let me let me make this clear.

18:19 Some things were a happy accident but much much less than what you would expect.

18:25 And it's like amazing to think about like okay so why did you

18:28 guys do this or why did you guys think this was going to work?

18:30 And there's a there's a reason for everything.

18:32 It's super interesting.

18:34 Super super interesting.

18:53 Bro visits Blizzard and doesn't bleed Classic Plus to us.

18:57 Well, one, I I told you what it was already, right?

19:54 I I have a big problem with the way that people like that that Blizzard

19:56 has been handling PvP because it kind of feels like an afterthought because yes,

20:01 you don't have to PvP to play the game.

20:05 And so because you don't have to PvP,

20:08 so many people will take the path of least resistance.

20:10 And when you take the path of least resistance, the hell are we going?

20:25 Yeah, I killed two and it only gave me credit for one.

20:44 Um, yeah, people can I mean it it is but like It's just lazy.

20:58 I never I've never played an MMO and like disregarded PvP ever.

21:09 my my first MMO was Dark Age of Camelot,

21:11 which like PvP was like all the RP, all the lore,

21:14 all the stories, everything pointed towards realm versus realm combat.

21:21 you know, the player is just the entry threshold is

21:28 too high for regular f folks and they just don't bother.

21:30 I mean, I don't think it's that bad.

21:31 I think the barrier of entry in Burning Crusade is actually really good.

21:34 Now, I will say this, there is a major problem with the way MMR is calculated.

21:39 There's a bug that snowballs out of control,

21:41 and I I brought this up to Blizzard multiple times,

21:45 and I' I've talked to them about it.

21:47 So if if you want to try arenas

21:51 in Burning Crusade right now or sorry in season 1,

21:55 there is a major problem with the way

21:56 your matchmaking rating which is invisible.

21:59 You can't see it is calculated as a as opposed

22:02 to your personal uh your your ELO your rating, right?

22:07 So for whatever reason this it wasn't a problem at the beginning of the season,

22:12 but it happened at the end of the season.

22:14 I got hit by it.

22:15 I had somebody in my group who had the same group rating,

22:19 like the same like PvP rating as we did.

22:21 We were all in the same like kind of range,

22:23 like within 50 points of each other, but I don't know who it was.

22:26 One of two guys that we placed in our group

22:29 uh had like a really low matchmaking rating for some reason,

22:32 even though we played like 50 games together the day before cuz we were winning

22:37 games and getting zero points and then we were losing games and losing like 20.

22:42 Like literally there was on my on my mod

22:45 on my add-on it showed four sorry I have

22:48 something in my it showed four games that we

22:51 won with zero points and we lost one minus 19.

22:54 So we ended up losing like 200 points almost on the last day of the season.

22:58 Like I almost didn't get Gladiator because of it.

23:00 It was insane.

23:00 So we ended up replacing those guys

23:03 and um thankfully we ended up climbing back up.

23:07 But man, I like you got to keep in mind I

23:10 was over the Gladiator cut off in week two of the season.

23:12 So if we had never played, I would have just been Gladiator.

23:16 Like we would we would have just had it.

23:18 I was 2150 and the cut off ended up being like 2124 or something like that.

23:21 I don't know.

23:22 Um so like to tank right beforehand and then barely get it like that was crazy.

33:09 that just started playing WoW Burning Crusade

33:12 and like play like there's people that have

33:14 like played a class for the first time.

33:15 There's people that are playing Burning Crusade for the first

33:18 time and they're they've never PvPed before and they're

33:20 like at 2k plus rating doing PvP and just

33:24 like trying really hard to focus on getting better.

33:26 Uh Eric, who's a priest that we arena with sometimes,

33:32 uh Eric had never done WoW PvP at any level before at all.

33:38 Uh and was just kind of like, you know, just he just he's a WoW player, right?

33:41 But he started playing a priest in Burning Crusade

33:43 and he ended up getting gladiator last time with me

33:46 uh with me and Grayson in arenas and he

33:50 had never been a wild pew peer before, right?

33:53 But he but he he tried he learned and he got better and he got gladiator.

33:57 It was pretty cool.

34:05 You don't need to be glad.

34:06 I mean you don't need to be gladiator to have fun, right?

34:08 Like that's like my own personal goal is like to get Gladiator every season.

45:42 to talk about and uh Paladin is one

45:45 of the classes that's probably changed the most,

45:48 but it goes for every single class.

45:51 like things that I want to be able to do as a classic paladin.

45:56 I want to be able to tank, heal, and DPS, but I it needs to have its own flavor.

46:00 Like I think AoE tanking that is that is a lot of people

46:04 that play Paladin want to do like the fun sort of AoE tanking,

46:09 AoE grind mobs, that that sort of thing.

46:19 I might be in the tank, but when I think about playing Paladin,

46:23 the first thing that comes to mind is ordering food

1:03:44 If you go r reckoning or holy

1:03:46 reckoning with like the current talent talent tree,

1:03:49 um it if you go re reckoning or holy reckoning with the current talent tree,

1:03:57 uh how it works is every time you get crit,

1:04:00 you store a charge and then whenever you attack,

1:04:03 it attacks twice up to four times.

1:04:05 Um four plus one your your main attack will be will be one.

1:04:11 So, um, which is really good in vanilla.

1:17:53 would get this debuff up and then you would holy strike.

1:17:56 But what they realized with a lot of these instant strikes that the paladin does

1:18:00 not have that distinct class identity that is

1:18:02 different from a rogue or a warrior.

1:18:06 And like I've had a lot of conversations with Kevin Chordon,

1:18:09 who's the original class designer for all the classes in vanilla WoW.
