Aubrey Plaza Asks Seth to Deliver Her Baby, Talks About Her Mafia Kittens with Butthole Issues
Late Night with Seth Meyers
0:01 -Our first guest tonight
0:02 is an Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated actress
0:04 you know from her work in "Parks and Recreation,"
0:06 "The White Lotus," and "Agatha All Along."
0:08 She is the co-creator and star
0:09 of the new animated series "Kevin,"
0:12 which is streaming now on Prime Video.
0:14 Let's take a look.
0:15 -I'll google couples therapists, you'll go sort it all out,
0:18 and then we'll all look back and laugh about this
0:19 at my Oscar party.
0:21 -Kevin, I know this is scary,
0:22 but you're gonna love our new place.
0:24 -Our new place?
0:25 "Our" like you and me?
0:26 Why would I be going with you?
0:28 -Because you're "our" cat.
0:30 And I'm the only real adult here.
0:32 -Your cat?
0:33 You don't own me.
0:34 You don't own this.
0:35 -Kevin...
0:35 -I thought this was like
0:37 a hype-house situation.
0:38 We're always making videos.
0:39 I don't have a job.
0:41 Mm?
0:41 -Kev, would some tuna water help?
0:44 Romantic jazz music plays]
0:45 -Mmm.
0:48 Do not do that.
0:48 Don't treat me like that.
0:49 -Kevin, it is okay if you're having some feelings about this.
0:53 -Please welcome back to the show
0:54 our very good friend Aubrey Plaza, everybody!
0:58 Cheers and applause]♪♪♪♪ It has been too long since I have seen you, my friend.
1:19 -I know.
1:20 Did you miss me?
1:20 -I missed you.
1:22 And, uh...
1:24 Is it safe to assume, my dear friend Aubrey,
1:26 that you are with child?
1:28 -How dare you...
1:29 -Oh.
1:30 Laughter] -...ask a woman that?
1:32 -Oh, no.
1:32 Did I— Have I jumped the gun?
1:35 Laughter] -Uh, no, you're right.
1:38 There's something inside.
1:39 -There's something inside you?
1:41 -Yes, and I'm really— -Hoping baby, hoping baby.
1:43 -It's a baby.
1:44 -Okay, that's very exciting.
1:45 We're very happy for you.
1:46 -May need you to pull it out.
1:47 -What's that?
1:48 -Um...
1:48 -Do you want me to pull it out?
1:50 Laughter] -That's why I came here tonight.
1:53 Laughter] -Oh, I would rather not do that.
1:54 -It's either you or Henry Winkler.
1:57 Laughter] Those are my top two.
1:59 -I would choose Henry.
2:00 Wouldn't you?
2:01 -Well, he delivered my baby on "Parks and Rec," so...
2:03 -That's true.
2:04 -That's all I know.
2:04 -He's had a— he's had a dress rehearsal.
2:06 It's very rare to get a dress rehearsal with someone.
2:09 It's so wonderful to see you.
2:10 I'm so happy to have you back on the show.
2:12 Congratulations on "Kevin." -Thank you.
2:14 -This is based—[ Cheers and applause] -Thank you.
2:19 -This is actually— this is based on a—
2:22 on a real-life situation.
2:23 And you co-created this with an ex-boyfriend
2:25 of like 20 years ago.
2:27 -Yes, I did.
2:28 Laughter] Um, it is based on our actual cat, Kevin.
2:31 We had a cat called Kevin.
2:33 -Uh-huh.
2:34 -He looked like Kevin, the cat on television.
2:37 Um, and, yeah, the show is based on our breakup.
2:41 We were a couple, uh, almost 20 years ago.
2:45 We lived in Queens, in Astoria, and we actually had two cats.
2:48 -Whoo!
2:48 -Thank you.
2:50 Laughter] We had two cats, Kevin and Howard, brother cats.
2:53 Um, and, yes, the show was based on the premise of,
2:57 you know, a couple breaking up and telling their cat, um,
3:01 and the cat ends up breaking up with them.
3:03 -Okay.
3:04 Gotcha.
3:04 -Um, because— -Goes on his own.
3:06 -Exactly.
3:07 Animals and humans in the show, they can negotiate these things.
3:10 -What were Kevin and Howard like
3:11 when you adopted these cats
3:13 20-odd years ago?
3:14 Were they good cats?
3:16 -They— well— yeah.
3:18 We—[ Laughter] They were— they were very little.
3:22 They were too small.
3:24 We found out they were too little to be adopted.
3:25 We actually, um...
3:26 -Where'd you get them?
3:27 Where do you get cats that are too—
3:29 So this was not an official place?
3:31 -It was a little bit shady.
3:33 I can't remember exactly.
3:34 It was probably like a Craigslist thing.
3:37 -Okay.
3:38 Gotcha.
3:38 -I remember we drove out to Howard Beach
3:40 and adopted them from, like, a mob family.
3:42 -Right.
3:43 -And it was really scary.
3:44 But we got the kittens in the car and drove away and...
3:48 -Seems like, you know, of the sort of rackets
3:50 you hear about the mafia being involved with...
3:52 -I know.
3:53 -...you rarely hear kittens.
3:55 -No, they try to get rid of as many kittens as they can.
3:58 -Do you think— do you think the kittens knew too much?
4:00 The kittens saw you?
4:02 -Yeah.
4:03 Um, yeah.
4:04 So then we brought them home, and we didn't—
4:05 You know, we had never had kittens before.
4:08 Um, and we didn't realize they were too little
4:10 until they started sucking on each other's buttholes.
4:12 -Oh, wow.
4:13 And why is that a giveaway
4:15 that they're too little?
4:16 Laughter] -Well, Seth, I'm glad you asked that.
4:19 We called the vet, and they said, "Oh, they're so little.
4:23 They're looking for milk,
4:24 and they don't know where to get it,"
4:25 so they started sucking on each other's, um, buttholes.
4:29 And, um, they were trying to just find a little bit of milk.
4:32 -Yeah.
4:33 -Um, but...
4:34 -Little butt milk to make it through the day.
4:36 -Yeah, just little anus milk.
4:38 And then so we started feeding them with like little droppers.
4:40 We learned how to give them our milk.
4:41 -Well, that's very nice, you taught yourself, yeah.
4:43 -My milk.
4:44 -Yeah.
4:44 -And that's nice that you guys stepped in instead of like,
4:46 "Well, they're gonna have to learn on their own.
4:48 -Yes.
4:49 Laughter] But that actually made it onto the show.
4:51 So if you watch "Kevin," the cartoon show,
4:53 you will see Kevin—
4:55 But in the show, Kevin goes to his therapist
4:57 because he has butthole issues.
4:58 -Gotcha.
4:59 Laughter] -Because his butthole's weird.
5:02 Because if you suck on a butthole too hard,
5:04 part of it can come out.
5:05 -Really?
5:05 -And you know what I'm talking about.
5:07 Laughter] -You do.
5:09 -You are— You play a human.
5:11 Jason Schwartzman is Kevin.
5:13 -Yes.
5:14 -The great Jason Schwartzman.
5:15 -The best.
5:16 -You have a lot of other wonderful cast members.
5:18 John Waters.
5:19 -John Waters.
5:20 -That's amazing.
5:21 Cheers and applause] How— Are you friendly with John Waters?
5:26 -I am.
5:26 I love John.
5:27 In fact, it's his birthday.
5:29 -Oh, happy birthday to John Waters.
5:31 -I think.
5:32 It's either— -Close enough.
5:33 We'll celebrate it either way.
5:34 -His birthday tonight or tomorrow night.
5:36 -Yeah.
5:36 -But, yeah, we became friends.
5:38 I asked him to do a hosting bit
5:40 on the Independent Spirit Awards with me,
5:42 and then— a long time ago, before the pandemic.
5:44 And then we— we just became friends,
5:46 and we've been trying to make this movie together,
5:48 and, um, nobody will give us money for it
5:51 because it's so weird.
5:53 But we will make that movie, John.
5:54 I promise you that.
5:56 -What does John play in the show?
5:58 -John plays a orange Persian cat called Armando,
6:04 who's kind of like the older cat.
6:06 He's kind of like a queen from Queens.
6:08 -Got it, yeah.
6:09 -He's like— Kind of, you know, he's— he's, like, over humans.
6:12 He hates humans.
6:14 And he's kind of like a— he's a failed Broadway director.
6:16 He ends up directing a theater troupe full of horses
6:22 that are doing a production of "Mame."
6:24 And we did get the rights to "Mame" for the show,
6:27 so you will see a bunch— an actual—
6:29 -Wait.
6:29 You actually, for the television show "Kevin,"
6:31 got the rights to "Mame"?
6:32 -Yes, that was very hard.
6:34 Laughter] -Did you have to be honest about how you were going to use it?
6:37 -Oh, yes, we had to— We had to tell them,
6:38 "No, it's horses performing 'Mame.'"
6:41 And— but we got 'em.
6:42 We got 'em there.
6:43 We got it.
6:44 -That's incredible.
6:45 Um, you did something, uh, I was very—
6:48 I've never heard of anybody going to see this live.
6:51 But you went to the WNBA draft.
6:53 -Oh, yeah.
6:54 -Which happened last week.
6:55 -I did.
6:56 -And, uh—[ Cheers and applause]
6:59 I will say, like, I saw— I saw photos, I watched videos.
7:02 Like.
7:03 I love watching people sort of elevate from,
7:06 like, their amateur to the professional ranks
7:07 and find it very touching.
7:09 You were a fan of the WNBA.
7:11 Was this something— have you been to a draft before?
7:13 -It was actually my second time.
7:15 -Wow!
7:15 -Yeah, I like going to the drafts.
7:17 -Wow.
7:17 -It was— Yeah, it was really fun.
7:20 My sister Natalie, and her wife, Zoe,
7:23 and I planned to go, and then I was— I had dinner with—
7:27 And Sue Bird, who's a WNBA icon.
7:29 -Legend.
7:30 -Legend.
7:31 And I was— I had dinner with Sandra Bernhard
7:33 randomly the weekend before,
7:35 and I didn't even know she was a fan of—
7:37 of women's basketball, and she was like,
7:39 "Honey, I love college basketball,
7:41 and you gotta get me to that draft!"[ Laughter] She's like, "Honey, come on."
7:44 And I was like, "Okay."
7:46 So, um, she basically forced her way in there,
7:49 and, um— and then, we all went, and we—
7:52 yeah, we rolled pretty deep.
7:54 -That's fantastic.
7:55 Here's your crew.
7:57 There's Sue, Sandra, that's yourself, and then...
7:59 -That's my sister, that's Zoe, her wife, that's me, that's Sandy, and Sue Bird.
8:04 -And so what is your— like,
8:05 what is the best way to, like, watch the draft?
8:07 Are you just, like, celebrating the moments everybody has?
8:09 -Yeah.
8:10 I mean, we all had our own agendas.
8:12 Like, Sandra wanted to, like, tackle Dawn Staley.
8:15 -Yeah.
8:15 -And we had to hold her back.
8:16 Like, out of love.
8:17 Like she loves Dawn Staley.
8:18 She was like, you know,
8:20 foaming at the mouth, trying to get to Dawn.
8:22 And so we all have— you know, we geek out on this stuff
8:25 because we're so— you know, we're such big fans
8:27 of the women that play.
8:28 And I think, for me, the most fun part is just watching
8:31 the families at the draft.
8:33 -Yeah, of course.
8:33 -'Cause they're so— I mean, it's so exciting for the—
8:36 for those women that get picked, and they're all— yeah.
8:40 Cheers and applause] And they're all— it's just—
8:42 it's very joyful, and— and this year more than ever,
8:46 because the women, they just signed a new contract.
8:49 -Yeah, they're actually gonna make some money.
8:50 -With the league.
8:51 Yeah, they got a raise.
8:52 -Well-deserved.
8:53 Cheers and applause] -It's a really exciting time for the W.
8:58 -You played basketball growing up.
8:59 -I did.
8:59 -Your sister played basketball growing up.
9:01 -Yeah.
9:02 -Who was the better basketball player?
9:04 -Um, me.
9:05 -Okay, great.
9:05 Are you older or younger?
9:06 -I'm not, actually.
9:07 -Okay, got it.
9:08 -Natalie...
9:08 -Were you competitive about it?
9:10 Are you the sort of— like, when you're out there,
9:12 do you have, like, a win-at-all-costs mentality?
9:14 -Yeah.
9:14 I'm a really big, like, [bleep] talker on the court.
9:17 -Got it.
9:17 Laughter] -So I would just drive people crazy with my mental game.
9:21 -Uh-huh.
9:21 -Just kind of psychologically
9:23 try to freak them out, and it would really bother them a lot.
9:27 -I believe you're very good at that.
9:28 -Yeah.
9:29 Laughter] -Because if you talk a lot while you're playing,
9:31 it's distracting.
9:33 -Yeah.
9:33 -Especially when I'm in their faces.
9:35 -Did it come naturally to you?
9:36 -Psychological warfare?
9:37 -Like, to be, like, sort of like a [bleep] talking,
9:39 psychological— -Yes.
9:40 -Yeah.
9:41 -Yeah, right out of the thing,
9:43 I was...
9:43 Laughter] -You'll be able to tell right away with this one.
9:45 They [bleep] talk— I can tell you as a parent,
9:47 they start [bleep] talking immediately.
9:49 -Oh, God.
9:49 Yeah, I don't know.
9:50 Yeah.
9:50 Yep.
9:51 Laughter] -You also— this is a tie-in to "Kevin," as well.
9:55 You brought your co-star in "Agatha All Along,"
9:58 Patti LuPone, your one-time roommate.
10:00 -Oh, yeah.
10:00 -You brought her to a WNBA game.
10:02 -Oh, yeah, Patti.
10:03 -And had Patti ever been
10:04 to a WNBA game?
10:06 -No.
10:07 Laughter][ Laughing] Look at her face.
10:09 -Now, what was her take?
10:10 Did she enjoy herself?
10:12 -Oh, she— she loved it.
10:13 Can't you tell?
10:14 Laughter] Um, she's— It's her birthday, too, by the way.
10:18 -You're just making it up.
10:19 -I swear to God.
10:19 -You're just making it up.
10:20 -I swear.
10:20 Cheers and applause] I swear to God.
10:21 -Really?
10:22 -I swear.
10:23 -And then Patti— Patti is also in "Kevin."
10:28 -Yes, Patti LuPone plays a pony called Patti LuPony.
10:32 Laughter] -Is she in "Mame"?
10:34 -She stars in "Mame."
10:35 She's not in "Mame," she's the star of "Mame," obviously.
10:40 -That's a wonderful tie-in.
10:41 -As a pony.
10:42 -Yeah.
10:42 -You have to watch this [bleep]
10:44 -Were you so excited when you realized
10:46 that you could get Patti LuPone to play Patti LuPony?
10:48 -Patti LuPone will do whatever the [bleep] I want her to do.
10:51 Laughter] -But did you call her?
10:53 I mean, was that a fun phone call to make?
10:56 Did you text her?
10:57 Did you text her or call her?
10:59 -I— I don't know.
11:01 I think— I'm pretty sure I called her,
11:02 and I just said, "Hey, Patti,
11:04 I'm gonna need you to voice a pony on my cartoon,"
11:06 and she went, "Okay, doll, just tell me where to go."[ Laughter]
11:10 She's like, "Where and when, doll?
11:11 Call my agent.
11:12 I'll be there." She doesn't— She's a work— she's a workhorse.
11:15 -Yeah, she's, like, the greatest gift I feel
11:17 like you can give her is to call her with work.
11:18 -She wants— she wants it.
11:20 -She wants to work.
11:21 God love her.
11:21 -She does.
11:22 -Thanks for being here.
11:23 Congrats on the show.
11:24 Congrats on everything else.
11:25 -Thank you.
11:26 -We missed you.
11:27 Aubrey Plaza, everybody.
11:28 "Kevin" is streaming now on Prime Video.
11:30 We'll be right back with Gaten Matarazzo.
