1:26 A rare and unsettling sight in the San Fernando Valley,

1:29 a black bear roaming Wildlife officials safely captured the bear just hours ago,

1:34 but a little earlier it triggered a lockdown

1:37 at a nearby elementary school and put residents on edge.

1:40 CBS LA's Luz delia Caballero is on scene in Porter Ranch.

1:44 Luz delia, has the bear been relocated yet?

1:50 Yes, the bear was taken away a little over an hour ago.

1:54 Once he was relocated to the Angeles National Forest,

1:57 we want to show you exactly where that bear ended up.

2:00 So, initially he came from this vacant lot, made his way over this brick wall,

2:07 and we want you to come down here

2:08 to show you exactly where he was actually tranquilized.

2:11 So, if Jason zooms in down the way,

2:15 you will see where he ended up along this brick wall.

2:20 Uh and as of now, we understand that he is between 3 to 4 years old.

2:26 And he's about 275 lbs.

2:31 A wild scene unfolding in Pacoima,

2:34 a black bear wandering through a neighborhood near Hansen Dam,

2:37 showing up in backyards, near pets, and even close to Sarah Coughlin Elementary.

2:42 Are they on lockdown now?

2:43 At one point, the bear walked along someone's back porch,

2:46 and you can see the person inside sitting on a couch jump up.

2:50 Neighbors say the bear appeared calm,

2:52 but its presence alone was enough to rattle the community.

2:55 Oh, yeah.

2:56 So, people are scared?

2:57 Oh, YouTube.

2:59 I remember you earlier today.

3:07 For longtime residents like Cecilia Mendoza,

3:10 it's something they never expected to see.

3:12 So, I'm surprised.

3:15 Just before 1:00 Monday afternoon, crews with the California Department of Fish

3:19 and Wildlife successfully tranquilized the bear,

3:22 which was seen passed out laying [laughter] Hey Denise.

3:53 Officials also believe this is the same bear spotted

3:56 in the Hansen Dam area just a day earlier,

3:59 seen climbing trees and resting nearby.

4:02 But still, even a calm bear is unpredictable, and for many here,

4:06 the experience was a stark reminder of how close wildlife can come to home.

4:14 And it came even closer for the Hancock family.

4:18 They actually tell us that the bear was put on top of this wagon

4:22 and it wheeled out of their property

4:24 eventually into that trailer to be relocated.

4:33 and how he was alerted that bear was in his backyard.

4:43 Well, Britney Spears has pleaded guilty to a reckless driving charge after she

4:47 was arrested back in March and accused of speeding and failing sobriety test.

4:52 Her lawyers made the plea on her behalf in the Ventura

4:54 County courtroom today to a so-called wet reckless driving charge,

4:59 meaning that there was a crash or injury involved,

5:01 causing a lesser punishment than a DUI.

5:04 Essentially, Spears was sentenced to a day in jail,

5:07 which the judge said she served when she was booked,

5:11 in addition to 1 year probation, a DUI class, and fines.

5:16 Amy, an Uber driver at the center of a nearly

5:28 12-hour long standoff in Beverly Hills on Yeah, that's because,

5:33 you know, the standoff and the pursuit happened in one

5:35 of the most monitored cities in all of Southern California.

5:38 Here in Beverly Hills,

5:40 cameras were able to pick up on the license plate of a man who

5:42 was wanted for attempted murder while inside

5:46 his pickup truck and innocent Uber passenger.

5:51 Yeah, I was afraid of that happening.

5:52 Rebecca Lee lives close to the spot where

5:54 the standoff lasted nearly 12 hours in Beverly Hills Sunday.

6:00 The LA County Sheriff's Department used a flash bang and tear

6:03 gas to draw the suspects out of the gray Ford truck.

6:06 Then sent in police dogs to arrest the man.

6:09 Earlier, a video camera captured the pickup crashing during

6:12 a police pursuit at around 1:30 in the afternoon.

6:16 There was about 15 cops that surrounded that car plus a SWAT team.

6:19 Armored vehicles were brought in during the bear situation.

6:22 The woman was also in the truck.

6:25 The tactical commander told the press hostage negotiators from the Sheriff's

6:28 Department and Beverly Hills were on the phone with the suspect,

6:32 working together to get him to release the passenger.

6:35 Just before 11:00 p.m., video footage showing the hostage being allowed

6:40 to get out and get taken to safety.

6:42 But also it's so glad the person was okay.

6:45 The commander says the hostage was an Uber passenger getting a ride to work

6:50 when the suspect's license plate was picked

6:52 up by a camera system similar to this.

6:59 Yes.

7:01 You know, over in South LA at about Um sorry, remind me what it is again.

7:16 The suspect was arrested around midnight.

7:18 Uber sent us a statement that reads in part,

7:21 "We have removed the driver from the platform and are

7:24 standing ready to support law enforcement with their investigation." Like,

7:28 is this really scary?

7:29 It just makes me feel like I mean,

7:30 we don't wait till the all time just in case it happens.

7:32 And I just feel so bad for that person.

7:37 The driver is currently in custody and his bail has been set at a It's funny,

7:42 Um but uh Jonathan Meer Neck, the, you know,

7:45 guy accused of starting the La Cumbre fire.

8:24 So, that rain could eventually slip into our forecast

8:27 overnight This is tense moments in our nation's capital today.

8:53 A suspect opens fire at the National Mall confronted by officers.

8:58 The Secret Service confirms officers returned fire and a teen

9:02 bystander was grazed by a bullet shot from the suspect.

9:06 It all happened near the Washington Monument not far from the White House.

9:10 Investigation force being locked down at the White House North Lawn,

9:14 which has since been lifted.

9:15 The suspect was transported to the hospital in unknown condition,

9:19 and that teen who was struck was treated for minor injuries.

9:29 Well, tensions ramping up in the Middle East with the ceasefire

9:32 between the US and Iran hanging on by a thread.

9:35 The Pentagon confirming today that Iran fired missiles at ships and US

9:40 allies in the region while US forces took out seven Iranian small boats.

9:46 It comes on day one of what the Trump administration calls

9:49 Project Freedom to guide commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz.

9:55 Looks to me as though the Battle of Hormuz has begun.

9:58 What is the line in President Trump's head that has

10:01 to be crossed before he considers the ceasefire over?

10:06 The president is facing heavy pressure to ease the economic strain of the war.

10:12 Across the US, the average cost of a gallon of gas hit 4.6.

10:16 It's the highest since fighting began.

10:18 Here in SoCal, it's up over $6 a gallon.

10:22 The war could soon have bigger consequences for California drivers.

10:26 Just this weekend, the last state-bound oil tanker that made

10:30 it to the Strait of Hormuz arrived in Long Beach.

10:33 And as CBS LA's Rick Montanez tells us,

10:35 the news is fueling uncertainty at the pump.

10:39 Uncertainty over what is happening in Iran

10:42 has led to uncertainty at the gas pump.

10:45 And also, these high prices some drivers would

10:47 argue that probably are calling them extremely high prices.

10:51 And so, we see this happening.

10:53 AAA says prices have not been this high in Los Angeles County since 2023.

10:59 Well, let's talk about the pipeline here.

11:00 Look at this map you're seeing.

11:02 This is off of Huntington Beach, just south of Long Beach here.

11:06 That red dot that is highlighted,

11:08 that is the oil tanker that is called the New Corolla.

11:12 It's waiting to pull into the Port of Long Beach here.

11:14 The New Corolla is the last California-bound oil shipment

11:17 to leave the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf.

11:19 It's the only oil ship that has crossed.

11:22 It's crazy.

11:23 What's that?

11:24 Oh.

11:25 What's that?

11:26 And it appears will continue to be an issue this year.

11:28 Iran has effectively shut down the strait since the US

11:32 and Israel began attacking Iran more than 2 months ago.

11:35 This put a chokehold on global oil supplies,

11:38 and hundreds of ships are stranded in that critical pathway.

11:41 President Trump has a new military

11:42 operation that he is calling Project Gridlock.

11:46 Today, when the US military will start guiding those ships through the strait.

11:50 And so, when you're at the pump here in Southern California,

11:53 this is a big part of why we're seeing these higher prices,

11:56 and why they may go up even further.

11:58 AAA says that gasoline supply is significantly

12:01 affected by activity through the Strait of Hormuz, or soon, the lack thereof.

12:05 Drivers we met this morning are frustrated.

12:08 What are you going to do?

12:10 I don't know what to do.

12:11 A lot of people feel like that.

12:12 What what can you do?

12:13 Yes, you got to go to work.

12:15 Do you drive less now?

12:16 I do.

12:17 I take the train a lot.

12:18 Driving back and forth from West LA to Long Beach.

12:23 Gas prices hit everybody over the head, including me.

12:27 Nothing here up Sky cam flying over the Marathon oil refinery in Carson.

12:31 This final shipment of oil on board the New Corolla is

12:33 headed here to be turned into gasoline and jet and diesel fuel.

12:38 Once that supply is out,

12:40 then there is concern over California's overall oil supply,

12:45 and whether we'll face a shortage.

12:46 Even politicians and lawmakers, they are sounding the alarm.

12:50 What could happen then?

13:14 his truck was struck by a plane as it landed.

13:24 And passengers feeling like sitting ducks as they wait help.

13:28 And the empire may strike back, but so do Hollywood vice officers.

13:34 allegedly took May the 4th shenanigans to another level.

14:16 which was that small fire on New Year's

14:18 Day that fire department said was put out, and it wasn't, and you know,

14:22 there's the debate over that, and then that led to the Palisades fire.

16:23 While you're leaving on your way over the ocean,

16:25 give me a shot of your skid over the water, please.

16:39 Yeah, and you remember Luigi Amangione is

16:41 the man accused of killing the United Healthcare CEO.

16:43 Many across the world, really, thought it was,

16:47 you know, a noble act as a, you know,

16:49 to stand up against the corporate kind of greed is what it was billed as.

16:52 Obviously, lots of people disagree with that, saying

16:54 it's never okay to kill anybody.

16:56 But in a new trial brief that is filed, and yes,

16:58 trial brief, because his trial is scheduled for just next month,

17:00 they talk about how he was fixated on Luigi Amangione,

17:03 as well as fixated on corporate greed and other things.

17:06 I'm going to show you an excerpt here from some

17:07 of the court documents that we have pulled that say, quote,

17:09 "Investigators asked the defendant why someone might

17:12 commit arson in the Pacific Palisades." He responded

17:14 that it would be out of the resentment

17:16 of the rich enjoying their money as, quote,

17:18 "We're basically being enslaved by them." End quote.

17:21 And compared such an act of desperation

17:23 to the murder for which Amangione was charged.

17:25 Now, I can also tell you that there was other reporting

17:27 here as we show you some video of the defendant here,

17:30 Jonathan Rinderknecht, who is, of course, again,

17:32 charged in the fire that started the Palisades fire.

17:35 That was the LaCumbre fire.

17:36 Another excerpt from it says,

17:37 "Many of the defendant's Uber passengers on December

17:39 31st and January 1st described the defendant as angry,

17:43 intense, driving erratically, ranting about problems across the world,

17:47 Luigi Amangione, capitalism, and vigilantism." That was, again,

17:51 [clears throat] the day that he's allegedly started the LaCumbre fire,

17:55 and then moved on to the Palisades fire, which ultimately spread to that.

17:57 Now, of course, we have told you that there is a lot

18:00 of issue in the legal world here of with whether or not

18:02 the federal government is going to be able to prove their case beyond

18:06 a reasonable doubt that the LaCumbre fire is connected to the Palisades fire,

18:10 and that nobody else was at fault for that happening.

18:13 There is a ton of lawsuits going on right now against the city,

18:16 against the state, against the fire department,

18:18 against a whole host of people related to the extinguishment,

18:22 or the lack thereof,

18:23 of the LaCumbre fire that would ultimately lead to the Palisades fire.

18:27 But again, you hear from court documents here that Uber passengers on the night

18:30 he allegedly started the LaCumbre fire accused

18:32 him of being angry and driving erratically,

18:34 and having this fixation, according to prosecutors, about Luigi Amangione.

18:40 A deadly outbreak on a cruise ship has left nearly 150

18:44 passengers and crew stranded in the Atlantic off the coast of Ecuador,

18:48 with six people waiting for permission for medical evacuation.

18:53 The World Health Organization says it is

18:55 a suspected outbreak of the rare hantavirus.

18:58 Three people died, and three others are seriously ill.

19:05 The most of the contagion comes from being exposed to the rodent feces,

19:11 the urine, or the saliva, and by breathing it in over and over again.

19:16 And it can be fatal,

19:17 as up to 40% of people will lose the battle with hantavirus.

19:21 The WHO says it is working with authorities

19:25 in Cape Verde and the Netherlands to contain further spread,

19:28 and try and evacuate the two sick crew members Now,

19:33 a terrifying moment for a truck driver in New Jersey, as you see here,

19:37 clipped by a United Airlines plane coming in too low at the Newark Airport.

19:42 The driver walked away with just some scrapes
