1:04 Mother's Day, as I said, is a very, very common cultural event.

1:09 So, you'll hear uh people talk about this on the news,

1:14 uh at schools, uh in your friend groups.

1:18 people will go away to visit their family to show uh their mothers lots of love.

1:23 It's a big deal, right?

1:25 In in many countries, including in the USA.

1:29 Okay.

1:29 Today, we're going to talk about vocabulary

1:32 for the conversations you can expect to hear.

1:35 And of course, you it's a good idea to know

1:38 these words because they're not only used on Mother's Day.

1:42 We also use these words in different celebrations, too.

1:46 So, it's a good idea to get some practice with these expressions

1:50 and see the different ways that you can use them.

3:04 Mother's Day if you if you've never heard of this somehow.

3:09 That's interesting.

3:10 But let's talk about it.

3:13 So, let's break this one down.

3:15 What is Mother's Day?

3:16 Let's read it first and then we'll break

3:18 down some of the key vocabulary points here.

3:20 Okay.

3:21 Mother's Day is an event for mothers and mother figures such as grandmothers,

3:28 stepmothers, aunts, guardians, and other caring women in a person's life.

3:37 It is a special day for family because people take time to show love,

3:43 thanks, and respect.

3:46 Many people tell their mothers that they

3:49 are loved and appreciated for everything they do.

3:54 Okay.

3:55 So this is one special day to recognize the people

4:00 that we have labeled here mothers and mother figures.

4:04 So this is one of the key words I want to talk about.

4:07 Mothers here means the person who gave birth to you, right?

4:13 the person you were inside their belly and then you came out.

4:16 That is your mother.

4:17 Okay, everybody has a mother or had a mother, right?

4:21 Mother figures on the other hand, a figure in this case,

4:25 maybe you've seen the word figure like

4:28 a figurine to talk about like an action figure.

4:31 Maybe you know that this figure is a little different.

4:35 So a mother or a mother figure,

4:37 you might also hear father figure means someone in the role.

4:44 Okay, someone in the role or someone who is like a mother,

4:49 someone who is caring, someone who for example when you were a child took care

4:56 of you or even now uh they they do things for you, they try to help you.

5:02 So we can have many people in our family and our friend

5:06 groups who have this caring kind of feeling about them, right?

5:10 Some examples are grandmothers.

5:12 Many people have a grandmother who took care of them a lot as a little kid.

5:17 In my case, I do.

5:18 I was lucky to have uh two wonderful

5:21 am lucky to have wonderful two two wonderful grandmothers.

5:24 Stepmothers, maybe this is a new word for some of you.

5:28 Stepmother is the mother you get after

5:32 your parents separate or after uh perhaps in some

5:36 cases maybe one parent uh passes away

5:39 and your in this case father remarries someone.

5:44 So the stepmother is that new mother figure, right?

5:49 So the second or maybe third mother that's in your life.

5:53 This the the new partner of your father is called your stepmother.

5:57 So this is the special vocabulary word we use for this type of person.

6:02 You might also have aunts who are in a mothering role.

6:06 Maybe you have older cousins or maybe even

6:10 you have siblings who took care of you.

6:13 I know some families have a big age gap between the children.

6:17 So maybe you have an older sister or many

6:19 older sisters who were very caring for you.

6:23 So the day is called Mother's Day,

6:26 but it's used to celebrate the very caring women in your life

6:30 who like who take care of you as a kid kind of.

6:33 So it's not always just a mother, but it's someone who has that role of caring

6:39 for a child or caring for somebody in the family.

6:42 Okay.

6:43 I would say though, we don't use this to talk about like a girlfriend.

6:47 If you have like a girlfriend or if your wife uh if you don't have kids,

6:53 it's a little strange to say happy mother's day because

6:57 they don't have children and they don't take care of children.

7:00 This is really for those people that take like I said take the role the role.

7:05 So like role means job to take the role of a mother.

7:08 So, we don't use this to say happy Mother's Day to a girlfriend

7:12 or to uh to your wife or your partner uh if you do not have children.

7:17 That's a little bit odd.

7:19 Okay.

7:19 Uh the next one I want to talk about is guardians.

7:23 Guardians.

7:24 This is an unusual word perhaps to appear here.

7:28 You might think of a guardian as like a protector.

7:30 Maybe you've know the movie Guardians of the Galaxy, right?

7:34 So, to protect something.

7:36 Guardian is a special role or a special job where in some extreme situations

7:43 for example in a terrible accident the a child's parents pass away they die

7:49 or the the parents are can no longer take care of them or something something

7:56 happens and the uh the biological the true

7:59 parents cannot care for a child anymore.

8:03 In many countries there is a system so

8:06 that someone else takes care of that of the kid.

8:10 So that could be a friend of the family.

8:12 Okay, we have something in the USA called godparents.

8:15 For example, if something happens to the mother and father,

8:18 the godp parentents promise to take care of the child.

8:22 Okay, so these are called guardians.

8:24 Someone who takes over the care of the child if something happens.

8:29 So there maybe there are many people um that have a guardian figure.

8:34 So a mother like guardian figure.

8:36 Okay.

8:37 So on mother's day we celebrate all of these different types of people.

8:41 Okay.

8:42 So we do this by showing love in lots of different ways.

8:47 We're going to break this down in today's lesson.

8:50 And we tell them they are loved and appreciated.

8:54 So appreciated means we feel we want to say thank you for their hard work.

8:59 Okay?

9:00 So make sure you say you say thank you

9:02 to your mom or thank you to your mother figure.

9:05 Yeah.

9:05 Because it's important all the time, not just on Mother's Day, right?

9:09 Maybe my mom is watching this now.

9:59 So, in the USA, Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May.

10:08 Second Sunday means on a calendar this is Sunday.

10:12 So, this is Sunday number one, number two, number three, number four.

10:17 So, Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday.

10:21 This is I don't think this is

10:22 this year's calendar but that's what second Sunday means.

10:27 So it's celebrated on the second Sunday in May.

10:30 So because this is based on a Sunday like

10:34 based on a calendar it's not a fixed date.

10:38 So fixed a fixed date means it's not exactly the same every time.

10:43 For example a fixed date is like May 6th or May 7th.

10:48 It's always that day.

10:50 It's fixed.

10:51 It's set.

10:52 But this Mother's Day is not a fixed date.

10:56 It's like Thanksgiving also is not a fixed date.

11:00 So, the exact calendar date changes every year.

11:05 This means families often check the date ahead of time so they can make plans.

11:11 Ahead of time means before the event.

11:14 So, they check the calendar before the event happens.

11:18 So, let's go on.

11:21 Oh, I think we'll talk about history

11:22 and then we'll talk about our cultural traditions.

11:25 So, how it started.

11:27 This is the story at least of how Mother's Day started in the US.

11:31 Maybe you have a different story in your country,

11:33 but Anna Jarvis helped start Mother's Day in the early 1900s,

11:39 quite a long time ago,

11:41 because she wanted a day to honor mothers and their and their love.

11:47 Okay.

11:48 So, President Woodro Wilson, this was a long time ago,

11:52 made Mother's Day an official holiday in the United States in 1914.

11:58 So, it's been an a real true uh holiday for a very long time.

12:02 Yeah.

12:03 Over a hundred years.

12:04 Since then, it has become an important yearly celebration for many families.

12:11 Okay.

12:11 So, now we have uh here a key word to honor mothers.

12:15 So to honor as a verb here, right?

12:18 To honor means to show respect to someone, right?

12:21 And to appreciate them.

12:23 Okay.

12:24 So that's the purpose and the history of this.

14:19 and small gifts on Mother's Day to show love and thanks.

14:26 This is key.

14:27 Bring breakfast to their mother, cook a special meal, or take her out to eat.

14:33 The main idea is not the price of the gift, but the care and thought behind it.

14:40 Okay, so let's break down some of these keywords.

14:43 People often give cards.

14:44 What is a card?

14:45 This is a card, right?

14:47 It usually says like mom, right?

14:49 Your two mom or something.

14:51 So, this is a really common one.

14:53 Write a short message to your mom.

14:55 Uh that's a super common way to like to start the day.

14:59 This is like the base, the minimum thing to do.

15:03 I feel like like a card and flower is kind of it.

15:06 Okay.

15:06 Small gifts on Mother's Day.

15:08 This one bringing breakfast to their mom.

15:11 You might see this in movies.

15:13 Breakfast in bed is a very popular tradition for me.

15:18 I don't know.

15:19 I always thought it was a little strange.

15:20 Like if I just woke up,

15:22 I want to get up and like wash my face like refresh and then have breakfast.

15:28 When I think about waking up and going h breakfast,

15:32 it's a little strange to me personally.

15:34 I don't know.

15:35 Maybe maybe I would like that if I were a mother, but I don't know.

15:39 But uh this is a common one that the family prepares a nice breakfast for mom.

15:45 She can relax and enjoy it.

15:47 So maybe you've seen the breakfast in bed concept.

16:24 Carnations.

16:26 Carnations.

16:27 This is a carnation.

16:29 The name of this flower is a carnation.

16:32 Carnations are a common symbol of Mother's Day

16:35 because Anna Jarvis connected them with the holiday.

16:39 Remember Anna Jarvis is the person who created Mother's Day in the early 1900s.

16:47 Red or pink carnations are often used to honor mothers who are living.

16:54 Okay.

16:54 This is actually important distinction.

16:58 White carnations may be used to remember mothers

17:02 who have died or mothers who have passed away.

17:04 So the color can also show a special kind of message, right?

17:10 So red or pink or white.

17:12 I would say though uh there are many people

17:15 that don't have to they don't um make it a priority.

17:20 We don't only share carnations on Mother's Day.

17:24 Uh for me personally, I choose flowers I think my mom will enjoy.

17:30 So I think like oh this is perfect for the season.

17:33 So I send her like a beautiful like bright colored bouquet.

17:38 Like I sent her one for her birthday and she was so happy.

17:41 It was so bright and she really really liked it.

17:44 She was so happy.

17:45 So we don't only send carnations.

17:49 We can also send lot just something we think our mom will enjoy.

17:53 So, this is something um you can do.

17:58 in China also that carnations are popular and in Japan too.

21:41 First, let's talk about songs.

21:43 I feel like this is h this is less important for me personally and also

21:49 just for as far as common media we see at this time of year.

21:55 Maybe you will see these some there are some mother themed songs.

22:00 They're a bit old, but it's not like we

22:02 we don't really listen to these songs on Mother's Day.

22:06 Maybe some people do.

22:06 Maybe I'm wrong.

22:07 Maybe my family's very different.

22:09 But some of these are um songs that are like about mo like moms.

22:14 Maybe you know like the Spice Girls song Mama.

22:17 But like these are just songs showing appreciation for moms.

22:21 You do not have to listen to these songs on Mother's Day.

22:25 It's just that these are some songs.

22:27 Maybe some people really like them on this day.

22:30 I've never heard of that, but maybe some people do.

22:34 Or maybe these play get played a lot uh

22:36 on like talk shows at this around this this day.

22:40 Right.

22:40 So like I think we're going to talk about it here.

22:42 Yeah.

22:43 TV programs.

22:44 This is where you'll see most of the discussion this week.

22:47 TV programs, especially like morning shows.

22:51 In the USA, we have something that's called morning shows.

22:54 Usually like two or maybe three hosts.

22:58 They usually talk about the news, current events, they're sipping coffee.

23:03 It's just like a a a really casual style talk show and they they're

23:08 on every day five like five days a week and they'll talk about just basic stuff,

23:14 cultural stuff, you know, and so they they may play one of these kinds of songs.

23:19 You might hear one of these mom appreciation songs

23:22 on those morning shows at this time of year.

23:25 Okay.

23:26 So, they will probably though they will

23:28 talk about Mother's Day things probably all week.

23:31 If you are in the US and you watch a morning show this week,

23:34 they will I probably 100% like there's a 100% chance this week

23:40 you will see one of these topics this week if you watch.

23:44 So they talk about gift guides.

23:47 Okay, so that means what should you get your mother, right?

23:50 So other than flowers or cards, right?

23:53 Thinking of things to give her.

23:55 They will talk about cooking ideas, right?

23:57 So, especially brunch recipes and breakfast recipes.

24:02 Okay.

24:03 They will also talk about stories relating to their moms.

24:08 And they will talk about uh Oh, sorry.

24:10 And then family shows.

24:12 So, that's like um stuff that families can

24:15 watch together that's easy for kids to watch.

24:18 Also, there will often be an episode of that show where kids honor their mom,

24:24 like they say thank you to their mom or they they show appreciation.

24:28 Okay, so commercials also, you will probably see commercials uh

24:33 and posters and advertisements about Mother's Day,

24:37 usually showing children giving flowers, eating, families eating together,

24:43 or someone calling their mom to say happy mother's day.

24:46 So, it's very common to see advertisements, commercials, and media about this.

24:52 Uh, because like everybody wants you to spend money on your mom, right?

24:56 We want to show thanks to your mom, but there's lots of companies that also want

24:59 you to spend lots of money on your mom, too, which honestly we love.

25:03 We love to we love to treat our moms, right?

25:05 We want to we want to treat our moms good.

25:07 Okay.

25:08 Um, other questions.

25:10 Patrick wrote, "In America, people used to buy clothes or mobile

25:13 phones in Mother's Days or only small gifts.

25:15 In Brazil, we buy gifts like that for this day.

25:17 It depends on the family.

25:24 This part usually, it's kind of it's smaller gifts.

25:29 Some families maybe will buy mom the new iPhone.

25:33 Maybe that's up to you.

25:35 In my family, it's usually small gifts cuz we don't,

25:38 at least our our family, we don't like to have a lot of stuff.

26:06 We we we don't really like to give physical gifts.

26:09 We like to have experiences or have meals together.

26:13 So, it depends on the family.
