Joe: Trump is on the wrong side of history with Ukraine and our allies are stepping into the void

MS NOW

0:00 ONE OTHER THING I WANT TO ASK YOU

0:02 QUICKLY BECAUSE YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT THE THE POSSIBILITY,

0:04 WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF SORT OF BOAT SWARMS,

0:06 SWARMS OF BOATS ATTACKING U .S.

0:10 VESSELS.

0:10 THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT THE UKRAINIANS ARE DOING RIGHT NOW.

0:13 I AM STRUCK AND I I KNOW HISTORIANS WILL DRAW A STRAIGHT LINE

0:17 BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES NOT BEING ABLE TO PUT AWAY IRAN IN THE TWO

0:23 WEEKS THAT DONALD TRUMP THOUGHT HE WAS GOING PEOPLE WHO ARE GOING

0:26 TO BE ABLE TO FINISH OFF IRAN AND BRING THEM TO THEIR KNEES.

0:28 VLADIMIR PUTIN'S THREE-DAY WAR NOW

0:31 POSSIBLY ACTUALLY BRINGING DOWN HIS GOVERNMENT,

0:33 TALK ABOUT THE PARALLELS IN THESE TWO WARS

0:37 AND WHAT YOU SEE THE UKRAINIANS DOING TO THE RUSSIANS

0:40 AND THE IRANIANS FOLLOWING UP A TELL YOU THE SAME

0:42 THREATS TO DO THE SAME TO THE UNITED STATES.

0:46 IT WAS ALWAYS A VERY, VERY DUMB IDEA FOR THE RUSSIANS TO GO TO WAR

0:50 WITH A COUNTRY FILLED WITH IT SPECIALISTS out of Mali.

1:07 They played a part, albeit minimal, in giving drone technology to the Syrians

1:11 when they wanted to oust Bashar al-Assad.

1:13 And now they're doing what they call kinetic sanctions,

1:15 which is basically going after the shadow fleet,

1:17 blowing them up THEY ARE DOING THESE DEEP STRIKES DEEP,

1:22 DEEP INTO RUSSIAN TERRITORY AS FAR AFIELD AS SIBERIA.

1:25 I MEAN NOT A DAY OR NIGHT GOES

1:27 BY WHERE SOME OIL REFINERY IN RUSSIAN IS SET ABLAZE.

1:30 RUSSIAN ECONOMISTS, THE HONEST ONES AT LEAST ARE

1:32 THEY ARE SAYING THAT THE LIFTING OF SANCTIONS,

1:34 WHICH WE DID BECAUSE OF OUR WAR IN IRAN, ARE NOT GOING TO HAVE THE SAME KIND

1:38 OF ECONOMIC IMPACT THAT THE RUSSIANS WOULD HAVE LIKED.

1:40 THERE'S A SORT OF A SUGAR HIGH, BUT IT WILL SUBSIDE.

1:43 AND THE UKRAINIANS, I MEAN,

1:44 HAVE ABSOLUTELY WAGED this incredible hybrid campaign.

1:47 And, you know, we've helped them, by the way, Joe.

1:50 I mean, one of the things I want to emphasize here is in spite

1:52 of Donald Trump's presidency and his refusal

1:55 to see Ukraine as an indispensable ally and partner,

1:57 you know, Zelensky went around TRUMP WAS

2:05 QUITE DOWN ON THAT BILATERAL DIPLOMACY BY ZELENSKYY.

2:08 HE WANTS THE UKRAINIANS ON THE HOOK SO HE

2:10 CAN IMPOSE A DEAL ON THE However, the U .S.

2:12 intelligence community has not stopped its support for the Ukrainians.

2:16 In fact, that support, I'm told, at high levels of the U .S.

2:19 intelligence community has only expanded.

2:21 So we are helping the Ukrainians kind

2:23 of wage war against Russia in a covert fashion.

2:26 And one CIA officer told me at one point that we

2:29 see the Ukrainians the way we saw the Cubans in 1959.

2:33 These are going to be an emigre population.

2:35 These He's going to be kind of our proxy force

2:36 to do all kinds of interesting things the world over.

2:40 So I think the Ukrainians are playing from two sets of books here.

2:43 Number one, they understand Donald Trump doesn't like them.

2:46 They understand that Donald Trump has

2:48 a particular contempt for Volodymyr Zelensky.

2:50 He sees him as inextricably linked to his first impeachment in Term 1.

2:54 On the other hand, nobody can deny, you know,

2:57 it's one thing to have solidarity READY

3:00 TO FEEL PITY FOR A VICTIM WHICH UKRAINE WAS.

3:03 BUT UKRAINE IS NOT LOSING.

3:05 UKRAINE IS A WINNER ON THE GLOBAL STAGE AND THIS THIS IS

3:08 SOMETHING THAT NOT ONLY THE UNITED STATES HAS TO APPRECIATE,

3:11 IT'S SOMETHING THAT THE RUSSIANS ARE BEGINNING TO APPRECIATE.

3:13 WHEN ZELENSKYY CAN THREATEN RUSSIA AND SAY

3:15 YOU GUYS ARE AFRAID OF HAVING A PROPER

3:19 YOU CAN'T BRING YOUR TANKS AND YOUR KIT OUT BECAUSE OF FEAR OF OUR DRONES,

3:23 AND THIS WAS AGAIN SUPPOSED TO BE A THREE-DAY CONFLICT,

3:25 THE RUSSIAN TROOPS AND RUSSIAN COLUMNS AT THE POLISH BORDER WITHIN TWO WEEKS.

3:29 THAT IS NOTHING SHORT OF A BREATHTAKING STATE OF AFFAIRS.

3:32 THAT IS A DEVELOPMENT VERY FEW PEOPLE IN THE ANALYTIC COMMUNITY SAW COMING.

3:36 SENIOR TRUMP ADMINISTRATION OFFICIALS STILL INSISTS, RICHARD,

3:39 THAT RUSSIA IS ON THE VERGE OF WINNING THIS WAR.

3:41 BUT THE FACTS ON THE WE ARE SEEING

3:45 THAT IN THE BEHAVIOR OF THE COUNTRIES INVOLVED,

3:48 SUGGESTING THIS IS A STALEMATE AT BEST AND FRANKLY UKRAINE HAS A LOT

3:51 OF MOMENTUM RIGHT NOW AND THAT COMES WITH THESE MEETINGS IN ARMENIA.

3:55 LONG-TIME SORT WE ARE SEEING THESE EUROPEAN LEADERS,

4:02 INCLUDING LEADERS OF CANADA STEP FORWARD AND SAY WE ARE HERE.

4:06 SO TALK TO US ABOUT HOW YOU SEE THIS CONFLICT GOING ON.

4:08 WILL THERE BE THERE WOULD BE A CERTAIN POINT WHERE THE U .S.

4:11 KIND OF HAS TO GET ON BOARD AND SAY, AT THE VERY LEAST,

4:14 WE'RE GOING TO STOP TRYING TO IMPOSE A BAD DEAL ON UKRAINE.

4:18 THAT SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED, NEVER SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED IN THE FIRST PLACE.

4:21 LOOK, A COUPLE OF WHAT A REMARKABLE DEVELOPMENT.

4:30 IT'S PART OF THIS LARGER REVOLUTION IN MILITARY AFFAIRS.

4:34 AND WE'RE ACTUALLY LAGGING.

4:35 BUT But you see it with drones and all these, you know,

4:38 inexpensive, easily to mass-produced systems,

4:41 anti-ship weapons, anti-aircraft weapons.

4:43 So we're a generation behind in some ways.

4:46 So Ukraine is the forefront.

4:49 really fast anything.

4:51 Politically, what's going on with Canada is also a transitional moment.

4:55 What we're beginning to see is essentially a lot of countries in Europe,

4:59 a lot of our allies around the world

4:59 have essentially given up on the United States.

5:02 They've given up that we are there to have their back.

5:06 Article five kinds of questions with NATO.

5:08 And a lot of them essentially say you Americans are too erratic.

5:11 You're too unilateral.

5:12 Whether it's tariffs or your diplomacy or we can't count on you.

5:17 So what you're essentially seeing in the economic realm,

5:20 the strategic realm, the diplomatic realm,

5:22 you're seeing the emergence of a post-American world where for 80 years,

5:26 we have been the center.

5:28 of international relations,

5:28 that phase or that era rather is essentially now giving way

5:33 and we're seeing a lot of other Ukraine maybe in the drone space,

5:36 Canada diplomatically.

5:38 You see France, Germany and so forth.

5:39 Countries are no We have gone, if you will,

5:55 from being the center of most relationships and most institutions.

5:59 By the way, we've withdrawn from many of the institutions.

6:02 So China's a beneficiary and what's happening is all

6:06 these other countries are now scrambling to fill the void.

6:09 So what's going on is a harbinger of the future.

6:12 Again, this is the post-American world.

6:13 One last point.

6:14 Not because others have become so strong but because we've pulled back.

6:19 This is IT'S THE TRULY ODD, ALMOST BIZARRE POINT.

6:23 THE UNITED STATES HAS DECIDED WE DON'T WANT TO BE AN EMPIRE.

6:27 WE DON'T WANT TO BE A GREAT POWER IN MANY WAYS.

6:29 SO WE'VE CREATED A VACUUM AND BOTH ADVERSARIES AND FRIENDS IT'S

6:33 A GREAT THING TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SPACE WHICH IS OPENED.

6:37 I MEAN, IT'S REMARKABLE.

6:40 I MEAN, NECESSITY IS THE MOTHER OF INVENTION AND THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT'S HAPPENING

6:46 THE FALL OF CONSTANTINOPLE FORCED PEOPLE TO TRY TO FIND ANOTHER ROUTE TO INDIA.

6:51 SO CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS SEARCH FOR THAT ROUTE, GOING WEST.

6:57 IN THIS IN THIS SITUATION,

6:57 YOU HAVE THE EUROPEANS WHO HAVE DEPENDED ON THE UNITED STATES,

7:01 THE CANADIANS WHO HAVE DEPENDED ON THE UNITED STATES,

7:03 SEEING THAT THE UNITED STATES, INSTEAD OF HELPING,

7:05 INSTEAD OF HELPING TO I DON'T THINK IT'S

7:08 GOING TO BECOME THE ARSENAL OF DEMOCRACY AGAIN,

7:10 A FREEDOM LIKE WE'VE BEEN FOR THE PAST

7:13 CENTURY AND IT CREATED THE AMERICAN CENTURY.

7:15 WILLIE, YOU'VE HAD WE HAVE THE ADMINISTRATION LYING,

7:18 CONSTANTLY LYING ABOUT UKRAINE.

7:20 UKRAINE IS LOSING THE WAR.

7:23 UKRAINE IS HOLDING NO CARDS.

7:25 UKRAINE IS ABOUT TO LOSE I DON'T THINK IT'S GOING TO TELL YOU HOW MANY TIMES

7:27 PEOPLE THAT THE UKRAINE BETTER GO TO THE NEGOTIATING

7:30 TABLE BECAUSE THIS WAR IS ALMOST OVER.

7:32 I CAN'T TELL YOU HOW MANY I DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH OF PEOPLE IN THE ADMINISTRATION

7:36 HAVE TOLD ME THAT OVER THE PAST YEAR AND EVERY TIME I'VE LAUGHED AT THEM.

7:41 SAID NO, NO, THEY'RE NOT LOSING.

7:43 I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR THING I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE THING IS WITH UKRAINE,

7:46 BUT RUSSIA IS NOT WINNING THIS WAR AND UKRAINE IS NOT LOSING AND THEY'RE

7:54 NOT THAT IS A LITTLE BIT OF EUROPE ALONG WITH OUR OTHER ALLIES,

7:58 ALONG WITH CANADA COMING SOMETHING THAT WE'RE GOING TO GET TOGETHER.

8:02 THIS IS SOMETHING PEOPLE HAVE HEARD ME SAY THIS TIME AND AGAIN,

8:05 WILLIE, BUT THERE'S A REASON WHY I'VE SAID IT.

8:07 YOU'VE GOT PEOPLE IN THE ADMINISTRATION LIKE J .D.

8:10 I DON'T THINK IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN.

8:12 DONALD TRUMP WHO HATES EUROPE.

8:14 SO MANY OTHER PEOPLE HATE EUROPE.

8:16 OH, THEY'RE THEY HAVE THE SECOND-LARGEST ECONOMY IN THE WORLD.

8:25 EUROPE, THE EU'S ECONOMY, THEIR GDP,

8:28 ALONG WITH GREAT THE UNITED STATES TEAMS UP WITH OUR NATURAL

8:36 ALLIES THAT TOOK DOWN THE SOVIET UNION AND HITLER, PRETTY STRONG.

8:42 BUT EUROPE CAN THEY CAN GO IT ALONE, IF THEY NEED TO GO IT ALONE.

8:46 WHY WOULDN'T THE UNITED STATES WANT TO BE

8:51 SHOULDER-TO-SHOULDER WITH SUCH POWERFUL THAT'S A QUESTION

8:55 FOR DONALD TRUMP AND HIS STORIES TO ANSWER BECAUSE FOR THE LIFE OF ME, WILLY,

8:59 I CANNOT FIGURE OUT WHY HE CONTINUES TO TRY

9:02 TO I DON'T THINK HE'S GOING TO SAVE VLADIMIR PUTIN,

9:05 THE GUY WHO HAS INVADED UKRAINE, WHO INVADED GEORGIA,

9:10 WHO WANTS TO INVADE OTHER EUROPEAN HE'S IN LARGE COUNTRIES AS WELL.

9:17 DONALD TRUMP IS ON THE WRONG SIDE OF HIS, OF HISTORY.

9:19 THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IS ON THE WRONG SIDE OF history,

9:23 and yet who's stepping into that void?

9:28 Canadians.

9:29 Europeans.

9:30 The British.

9:31 And it's making a big difference.

9:34 Yeah, as recently as last week, that 90 minute phone call President Trump

9:38 unannounced had with President Putin where he came

9:42 out of it and said Putin wants to make a deal but he doesn't have

9:45 somebody on the other side who will make a deal which is exactly the opposite

9:48 of what's going on and for whatever reason Joe it's been something of a mystery

9:52 though perhaps not a complete mystery why

9:54 he's always for the last decade at least

9:56 given Vladimir Putin the benefit of the doubt

9:59 and in that infamous meeting last year

10:01 where the President Vice President harangued Zelensky when

10:05 he came to the Oval Office and said you don't have the cards well as we

10:09 see here this morning yeah President Zelensky

10:11 saying you know what I'm holding a pretty good hand right now in a matter

10:13 of fact I'd like to offer you some drone technology for your war with Iran

10:19 yeah saying that he's holding absolutely no

10:22 cards when it's just the opposite and again

10:25 the Ukrainians time and time again getting battered

10:29 and abused by Donald Trump and again it

10:32 makes absolutely no sense to anybody at all Willie but there you have it I

10:37 mean the Ukrainians they can do this with us or they can do this without

10:40 us and right now they go from Donald

10:43 Trump saying they're holding no cards to deciding

10:46 whether the Russians can hold a parade in Moscow on May 5th and and 6th.

10:54 That's an extraordinary moment more than four years into this war editor

10:57 at the Insider Michael Weiss Michael thanks

10:59 as always good to see you still ahead
