These Bugs Sent Me to the Hospital!
Brave Wilderness
0:00 (intense music) (objects rumbling)- Slow down, slow down.
0:06 Geez, that makes me nervous!
0:08 (intense music) Oh!
0:12 (screen snaps) Where did he go, is he on me?
0:16 (intense music)- Well, this is gonna be an interesting episode because
0:19 I think it will probably be titled "The Only
0:22 Tom Coyote Peterson "Has Ever Had to go
0:24 The Hospital "For an Insect Bite or Sting".
0:28 And the bite wasn't given by an insect or an arachnid, bites were given by me.
0:32 So we're in Thailand right now.
0:34 And for the past four days,
0:36 I have pretty much been bed-stricken with some sort of horrible stomach virus.
0:42 I'm barely able to keep any food in, I'm exhausted,
0:45 I'm sweating, I have chills, I have muscle aches.
0:49 Just to walk out here to sit down
0:50 at this table (laughing) actually exhausted me a bit,
0:53 so if you notice my energy being a bit lower than it typically is in an episode,
0:57 it's probably because I haven't slept much.
1:00 We were in Thailand, Bangkok, to be specific,
1:02 and we thought it would be awesome to make
1:04 an episode that you guys probably already saw, which was,
1:06 "Coyote Peterson Biting Back At The Bugs That Bite Him",
1:09 where I ate 12 different species of insects,
1:12 and arachnids, and including a scorpion, a tarantula, and a centipede.
1:17 And in all fairness,
1:18 I didn't swallow necessarily all parts of those three big ones.
1:22 I don't know what was inside of that, but it's the worst, ugh!
1:27 I think they made me sick.
1:29 Right now, we're kind of assuming,
1:32 guessing, thinking for the purposes of production,
1:35 making, that the culprit for what's put me in this state of ailment.
1:39 But lo and behold, while we were on this location, as luck would have it,
1:44 our amazing friend Lockie from Australian Wildlife encounters
1:47 managed to find the three creatures that I ate,
1:50 only these ones are not dead, they're alive.
1:54 So if we figured there was ever a point for Coyote to just
1:56 sit behind a table and give a test of three different creepy crawlies,
2:01 free handling them, applying a little bit of pressure,
2:03 and finding out whether or not they're gonna bite or sting,
2:06 this would probably be it.
2:07 We're gonna start out with number one,
2:10 which also happens to be the first bug that I ate when I was thinking to myself,
2:14 "Hey, you know what?
2:15 A scorpion sting isn't that bad.
2:16 "Let me just chomp down on this giant scorpion." Well,
2:20 right here, my friends, we have a giant Asian forest scorpion.
2:25 Get this guy outta the container, I'll trying not to get stung in the process.
2:30 You'll notice the massive pinchers that this arachnid has.
2:35 And they are certainly capable of giving you
2:37 a really good pinch and a really solid sting.
2:41 The green coloration is really unique as compared
2:43 to a lot of scorpions we've seen elsewhere around the world.
2:46 But I think, the thing you're gonna notice first and foremost,
2:48 is just how big and creepy looking that bug is.
2:52 Now, I feel bad a bit that I had one of these on a skewer that was cooked,
2:56 and I put it in my mouth, and I crunched it up,
2:58 but what I did learn from that process is that they're incredibly durable.
3:02 That exoskeleton that covers the insect's entire body is so unbelievably rigid.
3:07 The claws, in fact, I was not capable of crushing with my teeth,
3:11 I'd say about as hard as a pistachio shell,
3:14 so that goes to show you that these arachnids are incredibly well built.
3:18 And I'm gonna turn a little bit like this.
3:20 Mario, maybe you can zoom in on that stinger; long, incredibly sharp.
3:25 Seems like it would probably give you a pretty nasty sting.
3:29 But the truth be told,
3:30 with most large scorpions like this, they rely on their padipalps
3:34 up front to be the main weapon that they use to kill,
3:38 crush, or decapitate their prey, so the sting, believe it or not,
3:42 is not nearly as potent as one might think.
3:45 Now, in order to test that sting,
3:47 rather to prove that the scorpion is not necessarily just out there to get ya,
3:51 I'm gonna apply some pressure to the front of its
3:54 head and see if it will voluntarily sting me.
3:58 Let's see what happens, here we go.
4:00 (intense music) (lip sucking) Could be bad.
4:02 I don't really wanna get stung by something while I'm feeling this sick,
4:04 but who knows, maybe the venom will help cure me a bit.
4:08 (intense music) Look at that, not a single defensive reaction.
4:15 It's basically just letting me push down on top of his body.
4:18 He's not even trying to pinch me.
4:20 Now, let's see what happens if I pick up
4:22 his tail and go ahead and let him pinch my finger.
4:24 Do you wanna pinch me?
4:25 Okay, he doesn't even really want to pinch.
4:27 He's trying to find something to get purchase with.
4:30 You don't even wanna pinch, I don't understand.
4:34 I'm holding you by your tail, and you're just like, "Nope, let me go.
4:37 I wanna walk around." Amazing,
4:39 this is something that you would look at and think to yourself,
4:41 "It's an absolute nightmare," but it has no interest in pinching or stinging.
4:45 Look at that.
4:46 I can just basically free-handle it in any way that I want.
4:49 And all it's trying to do is get me away from squeezing with my fingers.
4:54 I'm gonna try one more time, just a little bit further back towards
4:56 the stinger and see if we get different results.
4:58 (intense music) Absolutely nothing.
5:04 I mean, I think, I would physically have
5:06 to try to crush this arachnid to the point where
5:09 it felt it was going to be killed if
5:11 it was going to use that stinger as a defense.
5:13 Now, in a situation where I were to just uncover
5:16 this scorpion in its natural environment and catch it off guard,
5:20 it may be a bit more defensive, but since we've caught it,
5:22 we've had it in container, it's pretty calmed down.
5:24 And as you can see at this point,
5:26 it's doing a better job looking creepy than it is actually pinching or stinging,
5:30 so there you have it, giant forest scorpion,
5:33 not willing to just sting, unless extremely threatened.
5:37 And when it comes to eating things like this, could that be the culprit,
5:41 and all the goo that was inside of its body that caused
5:43 my stomach to be in the state of disrepair its in right now?
5:47 I don't know, but buddy, I'm sorry that I hate your cousin.
5:50 Just trust me, I'm paying for it today.
5:53 Put this guy back into his little container.
5:54 We'll let these guys all go back off into the wild this evening.
5:58 And number two is going to be something that I
6:00 was probably most dreading putting in my mouth, a tarantula.
6:05 I mean, just the idea of taking a tarantula
6:07 with all those urticating hairs on it, and cooking it up,
6:10 shoving it into your mouth; the fangs, abdomen,
6:14 thorax, who knows what's gonna be inside of that?
6:16 Actually, it was the tarantula up that I ranked
6:19 as one of the worst-tasting insects that I ate.
6:21 Oh!
6:22 Now, we've seen a couple of these in burrows in this area.
6:25 And we'll show you guys a cool experiment of how
6:28 if you tickle a stick around the outside of the burrow,
6:32 those tarantulas will actually spring up out of the hole and attack the stick.
6:37 (African rattling music) And I very well may do that with my finger too,
6:40 but we just haven't gotten to filming that yet.
6:42 (intense music) Aah!
6:44 (laughing) (Mario laughing) It's smacking me a little when he jumped.
6:49 This is the dumbest thing.
6:53 Come on buddy, let's hang out.
6:56 Get on my hand.
6:57 Ooh, it's so jumpy!
7:00 I got you, whoa, whoa!
7:03 Just like that, he jumped out.
7:04 No!
7:05 (intense music) He's like,
7:15 "This is my opportunity to make a run for it." Don't worry, I got him.
7:19 During an insane adventure like this, I need to be able to stay connected.
7:23 With our researching creepy creatures like this, relaying important
7:26 information to my team back at Brave Welders headquarters,
7:29 or even keeping a phone charged in the wild to call for help,
7:32 I know I can trust BLUETTI to keep me powered up.
7:35 This is the BLUETTI Elite 30 V2,
7:38 a compact power station that's surprisingly capable for its size.
7:42 Weighing just 4.3 kilograms, it's light enough for anyone to carry, even you.
7:47 And with a 288 watt hour capacity,
7:49 it delivers reliable power wherever you explore.
7:52 Whether you're camping, road tripping, working outdoors,
7:56 or just keeping a backup ready at home,
7:58 that ultra-light and high-efficiency performance makes
8:01 it perfect for a smart green lifestyle.
8:03 But honestly, what impressed me the most is everything it can charge.
8:07 With nine output ports,
8:09 the Elite 30 V2 can power multiple small devices at the same time;
8:13 Phones, laptops, camera gear, field equipment, you name it.
8:18 And it doesn't stop there.
8:20 It can even handle high-resistance devices you normally
8:22 wouldn't expect to use on a unit this size.
8:25 And best of all, keeping it charged is easy no matter where I'm filming.
8:29 Oh no, my phone died, and BLUETTI is almost outta juice!
8:32 Good thing you can charge it anywhere.
8:34 (air whooshing) (squelching music) You can plug it into any wall outlet.
8:38 You can even tap into solar.
8:40 I got the power♪ You can even charge it in your car.
8:44 From long travel days, to remote locations filled with bugs and creatures,
8:47 it stays ready for whatever the day throws at us.

8:57 Thanks again to BLUETTI for sponsoring this episode.
9:01 Oh, bear!
9:04 But as you can see, even chasing after him like that, he didn't bite me.
9:09 Now, if I apply pressure to the spider's body, it may choose to bite.
9:13 And we'll try that in a second if I could get him to calm down.
9:17 Whoop, (intense music) not easy to free-handle one of these guys,
9:21 but the blue legs are the thing that I think is the absolute coolest.
9:25 And with the tarantula that I ate the other day,
9:28 it was definitely bigger than this tarantula, but when you look at the abdomen,
9:31 you can see whatever that's full of, and any of that getting
9:36 into my stomach could quite possibly have caused some sort of problems.
9:39 So I don't want to just blame the tarantula
9:42 because I feel bad that I even ate a tarantula,
9:45 but I have a feeling that just from the taste of what this one was,
9:49 it could be one of the top culprits for what made me as sick as a dog.
9:52 I don't know if you guys can see, but I'm dripping sweat right now.
9:55 Hopefully, is was what I'm even saying making sense at the moment?
9:59 I'm so delirious, hopefully, any of this is coming across in the right way,
10:02 but at least we've gotten spider to calm down, and I feel good about that.
10:06 So when you look at the design of this arachnid's body,
10:09 you see all of those little hairs, especially on the back of the abdomen.
10:12 And those urticating hairs are usually the number one defensive mechanism
10:15 that these spiders will use to ward off a potential predator.
10:19 A bite is usually only saved for inflicting a wound on a prey item,
10:25 so it's like a worst-case scenario that a tarantula like this would try to bite.
10:29 And what I am gonna try to do, same way that I did with the scorpion,
10:33 is I'm gonna apply a little bit of pressure to the thorax
10:36 of the spider and see whether or not it's gonna choose to inflict a bite.
10:41 Let's see what happens.
10:41 (intense music) Oh, you know what?
10:47 He did, he just bit my arm.
10:50 He definitely just bit my arm right there.
10:53 And now, he's crawling on my face.
10:55 So the tarantula did want to give me a little bite.
10:58 You guys didn't see that.
10:59 I barely even felt it.
11:00 I looked over, I was like, "Oh,
11:02 are those his legs or those his fangs?" But he got me right there,
11:07 and it basically feels like a bee sting.
11:09 Now, he's on my shoulder.
11:12 I really don't want you to come over here.
11:14 (intense music) He's all the way on my back.
11:20 Mario, can you come over and just coax him over to the front?
11:22 (intense music) I did not expect him to bite.
11:27 I honestly thought that the tarantula was gonna do nothing at all.
11:30 He is rather frisky though.
11:33 I'll keep him.
11:34 Come here, whoo, whoo, whoo.
11:37 And I always try to be extremely gentle with tarantulas because
11:41 their bodies are more fragile than a centipede or a scorpion.
11:46 But when I ate one the other day,
11:49 I was surprised to see how rigid those legs and that thorax was.
11:53 The abdomen definitely squished like a gusher,
11:56 but when it comes to the rest of its body,
11:59 much more resilient than you would think, so there you have it.
12:02 Tarantulas, more likely to try to skitter off than they are to bite.
12:06 We're gonna let you go in just a few minutes back in your box.
12:09 (intense music) Well, we'll look at this in a second.
12:17 It is starting to swell up a little bit.
12:19 Now, (clears throat) the next thing that's coming out
12:24 of the box is going to be a centipede.
12:27 And Lockie caught this centipede the other day while looking for some snakes.
12:31 And it's not the most colorful, but it's still a centipede!
12:35 And you guys know how much I do not like getting bitten by centipedes,
12:39 so fortunately, it's been staying pretty calm.
12:44 I'm gonna attempt to free-handle it,
12:46 and try that same idea of, "If you apply a little pressure,
12:50 is it gonna bite?" We know because centipede bites are so bad.
12:54 Actually, my hand is starting to hurt a little bit from the tarantula.
12:56 I'm not gonna lie, a little bit more than I thought,
12:59 but still about on par for bee sting,
13:01 but I know the bite from this would be significantly worse!
13:05 So I'm not gonna necessarily take a bite intentionally, but you know what?
13:09 I kinda deserve to get bitten by all of them, having eaten one of their cousins.
13:14 Oh!
13:15 (vomits) Let's see if little centipede wants to come out and play.
13:19 Come on, buddy.
13:20 Oh, this makes me nervous.
13:24 (objects rumbling) (mouth blows) Ah, slow down,
13:38 slow down, slow down, slow down, slow, slow.
13:43 Not at my shirt, slow down, slow down.
13:49 Oh, geez, that makes me nervous.
13:51 You see how fast they move and how
13:53 quickly you've gotta move from one hand to another?
13:56 And so far, even after even plopping onto the table
14:00 and me getting it up and off the ground, (sighs) still haven't been bitten.
14:04 Now, I'm sweating bullets because I have no idea
14:07 how potent the venom of this centipede species is, so it just makes me nervous.
14:16 Sweating bullets over here guys.
14:19 No, no, no, no, I don't want you going up my shirt!
14:20 Whoo, that feels so weird!
14:22 Now, their legs have these tiny little hooks on them,
14:24 as of course we've talked about in previous episodes.
14:26 And that's what makes these myriapods so scary,
14:30 is you feel like the second they latch on, you can't get them off.
14:36 But lo and behold, here we have a centipede freely
14:40 walking all over me without it necessarily wanting to bite.
14:45 And I'll try to stay focused because if I don't, it might fall off my hand.
14:49 And try to pick it up off the ground again is definitely gonna cause it to, ooh,
14:56 it's risky little game there, whoop!
15:00 Now, (sighs) I'm gonna say this quietly so the centipede doesn't hear me.
15:04 When I bit into the centipede the other day,
15:07 I bit the head off to start with, and it was very crunchy.
15:11 And the fangs themselves are incredibly rigid.
15:15 Those fangs are actually modified legs that produce venom.
15:21 And one of the coolest things about
15:22 centipedes is that their heads and their tails,
15:26 essentially the backend of them looks identical.
15:28 And that's something called defensive mimicry.
15:30 So that if a predator comes into the environment,
15:32 it may think that this end is the head and bite there,
15:34 then the centipede can swing around...
15:36 Oh, (chair falling) ah, (laughing) he went through my shirt!
15:43 Where did he go, where did he go?
15:47 Is he on me?
15:51 [Trent] He went and took off.
15:52 Is he still on you?
15:54 I don't know.
15:54 He went up my neck.
15:57 No, I saw him fall down here.
15:59 Where did he go?
16:03 Are you sure he is not on me?
16:04 Yeah, I saw him fall.
16:08 [Mario] You'll soon find out if he's on you.
16:14 Oh, as soon as it got by my neck I freaked out!
16:20 How could it disappear that quick?
16:23 There's no way.
16:26 Maybe he's in my pocket.
16:30 You guys saw him on the ground?
16:32 I'm pretty sure.
16:33 [Mario] I did not see him on the ground.
16:35 I mean, I feel like if he was in your shirt,
16:36 you'll still feel him moving, right?
16:38 [Mario] Maybe.
16:39 I would say take off your vest just to look.
16:43 Is he on my back?
16:45 [Mario] No.
16:49 Yo, that's the disappearing centipede.
16:52 Maybe I'm just delirious 'cause I'm sick.
16:54 That really just happened?
16:56 Okay, (laughing) wow.
16:58 [Mario] Now, if I were you,
16:59 I would go inside and double-check everything real quick.
17:01 Yeah.
17:02 Why don't you do that?
17:03 Wait, hold on, just keep the cameras rolling, keep it rolling.
17:05 Just here, Mario, just investigate into my shirt.
17:08 Make sure he is not in here.
17:12 I don't, I feel like he'd be crawling, though.
17:15 Is he in my boot?
17:17 [Mario] Honestly, though, you gotta check your pants.
17:22 Oh my god, that'd be so terrifying.
17:24 Nope, that's not a centipede!
17:26 Oh my god, that was so crazy!
17:28 I don't know how that just happened.
17:30 That thing ran up my neck, I jumped out of the chair, and it disappeared.
17:36 That's why you don't make episodes when you're sick.
17:38 I'm sitting back down.
17:39 We've have officially lost the centipede,
17:42 unless it magically reappears and bites me.
17:47 (sighs) Oh, empty container,
17:51 but that goes to show you something really important.
17:54 That centipede was far more interested in escaping than it was biting me.
17:58 And how did I react?
17:59 The way people typically react when a centipede runs onto their body.
18:04 And that's how people get bitten.
18:06 You see something like that, and you start smacking at it!
18:08 I wanted to start smacking at it, and I knew not to!
18:11 That was just my natural reaction.
18:13 And I jumped up out of the chair, (laughing) not very bravely,
18:18 but I didn't want it to go down my shirt!
18:20 (sighs) Sometimes if you just remain calm,
18:25 the animal is trying to do nothing more than get away.
18:28 And what do we just prove?
18:30 That all three of these creatures,
18:32 arachnids and myriapods typically don't want anything to do with humans.
18:36 And they will only bite as a last resort to get away.
18:40 In the instance of the tarantula,
18:41 it used its fangs more as a gripping mechanism than it did
18:45 to actually give me a predatory bite or maybe even a defensive bite.
18:49 I am dripping bullets with sweat.
18:52 And we have booked me an appointment in Bangkok.
18:55 Tomorrow, I will be going to the hospital to get medication.
18:59 And we'll probably wrap up this episode
19:01 with that experience and what I end up getting
19:04 prescribed that will hopefully bring an end
19:06 to the situation that is happening with my stomach.
19:08 But I think the moral of this story is,
19:11 be humble in all instances because it was fun and games
19:15 when we were at the market eating insects and I was saying,
19:18 "Coyote Peterson finally gets to bite back at the bugs,
19:21 but lo and behold, it's the bugs that got the final chomp.
19:25 And now, since having eaten those bugs,
19:27 that's gonna be the first time I get sent
19:29 to the hospital for doing one of these crazy stunts.
19:32 I'm Coyote Peterson.
19:34 Be brave, stay wild.
19:37 We'll see you on the next adventure.
19:39 (sighs) I don't know what to do.
19:40 (bright music) So I just saw the doctor.
19:45 He was very helpful.
19:46 I'm getting prescribed three medications just to be safe.
19:49 One that I'll take for five days just as a contingency,
19:52 and the other two will be backups just in the event
19:54 that for some reason vomiting or massive diarrhea comes back,
19:58 but I think, I'm in the clear on those too.
20:00 It sounds like it was probably just extreme food poisoning,
20:03 which could've been bacteria on the outside of the insects' exoskeletons.
20:08 So the moral of the story is, bugs are friends, not food.
20:12 (logo rumbling) (birds chirping) (gentle music)
