That Champions League Final vs Chelsea...
Fozcast - The Ben Foster Podcast
0:00 Um can we rewind a couple years then
0:02 to the Moscow um08 uh Champions League final?
0:05 No problem.
0:06 Um so obviously one uh go special time penalties.
0:09 Um I don't know this but would it be the the pinnacle of your career?
0:15 Is it the proudest moment of your career because you've won
0:18 the Champions League before with with Ajax when you were younger as well?
0:21 Yeah I uh I read last week something about Clarence Sedorf.
0:23 Clarence won four four I think.
0:26 Yeah.
0:27 And they asked him which one is the most special.
0:29 Yeah, the most special was the first one you the first time you Yeah,
0:33 that's the ambition to win the Champions League
0:36 and of course I did have the Ajax and with with Frank Bour, Mark Oversar,
0:40 Peter Cl, Cedor, David Davitz, Frank Reichard,
0:42 tremendous players, Patrick Clver, you name them.
0:46 Uh, but for a goalkeeper, it's sometimes difficult to make the the difference.
0:50 a player can score a goal in the 88th minute,
0:52 but we made a save in the 68th minute,
0:53 a really really important one, but all the the headlines are going to the strike
0:57 or the guys who who scored the goal.
0:59 So to have that moment and um and and of course I made saves along your whole
1:05 career and you won games and you lost
1:07 games and you played well in finals or not, but to be the pinnacle,
1:11 the center point of the attention of the whole world and that moment
1:16 that that you go to the right and and you see that ball coming towards you
1:20 and it hit your fist and it goes out and you stand up and you
1:24 see the guys coming to charging towards you
1:26 and the other side and the other side.
1:28 But every time I tell it,
1:29 I get I get the same I get the same feeling that that feeling
1:32 that those three four seconds you I was on my own and and yeah, this is it.
1:37 This is doesn't get any better.
1:39 It don't there's no way it can It's got to be the pinnacle then hasn't it?
1:42 Champions League final penalty.
1:44 Probably a World Cup final would be the only one.
1:48 That's the only thing.
1:49 That's the only thing.
1:49 But that motor like you say there when you you've got like
1:52 two or three seconds and before the lads actually get to you just
1:56 the way you celebrate you can't have we watched Edward's like going
2:00 come on hurry up hurry up hurry up this is so this is
2:02 incredible because the penalty shoot out the way that it went obviously
2:05 um Ronaldo missed his penalty and we're losing we're losing the game here
2:09 Chelsea just have to keep scoring their penalties and they've won and then
2:11 eventually the John Terry slip and then obviously the now penalty save.
2:15 Oh Edwin it's unreal isn't it?
2:17 It was unreal.
2:18 Yeah, it's of course a hard a lot of hard work,
2:20 dedication and and and focus uh into into that moment and let's
2:25 say yeah of course everybody looks at this final but I
2:28 I played five and let's say only one two so the average
2:32 for myself I think I we should have won or one more
2:36 then you like three out of five is better but okay there's still
2:40 a lot of a lot of great players I never won the Champions League.
2:43 Yeah, the couple um the couple that you lost for United against Barcelona,
2:47 it was just it was Leo Messi, Leo Messi time, wasn't it?
2:49 I him and his pump really
2:50 different different playing style and uh the first steps
2:53 of Guardiola um designed dedicated structure in how to play football.
3:00 Do you remember that Leo Messi header in the 2-0 win?
3:03 Little weasel.
3:04 I know.
3:05 What are they looking for Leo Messi in the box for?
3:07 Not a clue.
3:07 It was unbelievable, wasn't it, Javi?
3:09 It was.
3:10 He puts his head up and he sees little Leo Messi there
3:12 and I'm thinking you can't try and pick out Leo Messi in between.
3:15 Just hope it's not his only header in his career that he scores.
3:19 No, what a goal though.
3:20 By the way, little Leo Messi can guide a header like that.
3:22 Unreal.
3:23 Um you mentioned about years of sort of um hard
3:26 work and experience and it all leads to these final moments.
3:29 During your career, how much did you do on um
3:32 kind of analysis really looking at the teams you're playing,
3:35 looking at the players, individuals?
3:37 I think nowadays with all the data that's that's available,
3:39 it's it's it's becomes yeah so much and even yesterday
3:43 also in the in TV studio the the the amount
3:46 of chances the the averages the percentage of what
3:49 what when do the goalkeeper should have saved a shot.
3:53 Uh I think it's gets a little bit too much to be fair.
3:56 Um yeah, I know with Eric Steel, of course,
3:59 you watched the you got the the game that De Mo Stain was explaining how
4:04 the tactic uh or or Koski and you had to look at a couple of the strikers,
4:10 but in general, I think the strength we had with with United,
4:14 we were I think we were yeah the dominating team.
4:17 So, uh, it was more about our way of playing and I I just had to make sure
4:22 that the defense was there organized that not not
4:26 everybody was going and that that's yeah the the corners,
4:29 the free kicks, crosses are are dealt with.
4:32 So, you wouldn't have done too much analysis then.
4:34 You don't you United just didn't really
4:36 worry about the opposition did they too much?
4:39 M no I think what what nowadays what's what's like
4:42 homework what the players are getting uh and of course
4:45 it's much easier now with all the data
4:46 that that can they have like teams of 20 persons
4:50 dedicated to to video analyze to data
4:52 to to to to defense midfield and strikers I think
4:56 that's that football has developed so much uh
4:59 and it's now let's say become a proper job yeah
5:02 uh to train properly once or twice a day and also to look at videos
5:06 and and and and and action It's a big part of the job now, isn't it?
5:10 Yeah.
5:11 Um, whenever we get goalkeepers on, Edward,
5:12 we always like to get a bit geeky with um,
5:15 talking about your gloves and maybe your boots.
5:18 Um, what was your um, sort of like glove ritual basically?
5:22 So, when would you wear a pair of gloves?
5:24 Were you obsessed with it being the minute details or did you just
5:28 let the kitman take care of it and I'll wear them on Saturday?
5:30 It's fine.
5:30 I think you did that.
5:31 Yes, I did that.
5:32 Yeah.
5:32 Yeah, I did.
5:33 That's the difference.
5:35 No.
5:35 Yeah.
5:35 Glo.
5:35 Yeah, my gloves were the most important thing.
5:37 And uh I I used to let's say for European matches
5:41 I used to whatever train with them in the interstate
5:43 into the in the stadium on the on the let's say on the Monday evening
5:46 uh watch them in the hotel uh dry.
5:49 You would take them yourself back to the hotel.
5:51 You didn't do that?
5:52 No.
5:52 Only later on in my career.
5:53 I think I probably learned it from you to be honest.
5:55 I hope so.
5:55 Yeah.
5:55 I hope so.
5:56 So um and then most of the time they were they were let's say
5:59 ready for uh for the game on the on the on the on the Tuesday.
6:03 uh sometimes when let's say the the foam
6:05 changed and and you felt maybe this need two
6:09 or three training sessions and then before they
6:12 can go in your match glove glove glove bag
6:15 uh in general I played maybe four or five times with a with a pair of gloves.
6:20 Wow.
6:20 We have got a lot of goalies come on and they they'll just use one a game now.
6:24 One pair per game.
6:25 I heard about John Terry that he let's say every game new pair of shoes
6:30 even at halfime new pair of shoes the warm up first half
6:35 second half have a new pair of boots no I think and you need
6:38 to feel connected you know you need to feel safe with with with the gloves
6:43 that you're wearing with the foam that's there that there's already a little
6:46 bit of wear not wear and tear but that's that is used
6:50 a bit of grip a little bit of something
6:51 so it's not quite brand new latex how much did
6:53 you see it develop so obviously starting to play
6:56 from 1990 to to retiring what 25 years later or something.
7:01 How was the technology like um develop
7:03 from that first pair of gloves to when you retired?
7:06 Yeah, you already say like that's that's a mand.
7:11 So, uh, of course, uh,
7:14 I started out playing with sport was like a real proper goalie goalie goalie
7:19 goalie goalie goalkeepers glove.
7:22 Uh, around mid '90s I went to Adidas and helped them develop
7:25 also the new the the gloves that they were they were making.
7:28 You would have had finger save back.
7:30 Yeah.
7:30 Had a couple of but I I was not wearing all of them.
7:33 like there's two
7:35 and yeah to and I went to Germany also to talk with with the guy who made them.
7:39 So they made them especially for me with kind of kind of foam they
7:44 they were using uh sometimes I had winter gloves also with like Gorex inside
7:50 uh they want they were fantastic they were fantastic also.
7:54 So in that way a lot of things changed and to be
7:56 fair I got got a new shipment last last week
7:59 and I trained yesterday with my son because I have a have
8:02 a game later on this this week in in Korea somewhere.
8:05 Uh so I tried two two new pairs and uh yeah they felt great straight away.
