Should I Sue Hyundai?
Hank Green
0:00 Hello, Tank.
0:00 I just got finished at the gym
0:02 where I've returned after somewhat healing from shingles.
0:05 Got in my car and I want to show you something
0:07 that I find very frustrating about how cars work right now.
0:11 And then after that, a thing that I find particularly frustrating that makes
0:17 me feel more frustrated about the thing that is about this particular car,
0:21 which is a Hyundai Ionic 5.
0:22 All right, I'm going to turn on the car.
0:23 Turning on the car.
0:24 Car's turning on.
0:25 I get this little thing.
0:26 This is a paragraph of information that comes up every time you start
0:29 the car forever and will always come up when you start the car.
0:31 Every time you start the car forever,
0:33 it's a little message that's telling me that I should obey the law,
0:37 which Hyundai doesn't need to tell me to do.
0:39 I'm going to do that whether or not Hyundai has reminded me to obey the law.
0:43 Now, the other thing that's frustrating is it's like,
0:45 don't look away from the road while you're driving.
0:48 But it's a little bit ridiculous to have a full paragraph
0:51 of text telling me that in a place that isn't the road, right?
0:56 So like I'm driving my car and this thing is here and it's like read me.
1:01 No.
1:01 No.
1:02 It's 2026.
1:03 Cars have had screens for a long time.
1:05 We do not need to have them remind us
1:07 to not look at the screens when we're driving.
1:10 We should know that by now.
1:12 And if we don't, we're not going to be
1:14 convinced by our cars passive aggressively interfering with the user
1:19 experience of enjoying the drive by giving us a little
1:23 message that we have to click on or off.
1:24 Now, that's the thing that a lot of cars are doing
1:26 right now that I think is ridiculous and it makes no sense.
1:29 And if it is a regulation that the government has passed,
1:32 here's future Hank to tell you if it's a regulation that the government
1:34 has passed or if it's just a thing that car companies do.
1:36 I don't know which.
1:37 So, here's what I can tell you.
1:38 Not every car does this.
1:39 So, clearly it is not legally required.
1:41 Now, is there some lawyer somewhere saying that you
1:44 should do this just to protect your ass?
1:46 Probably.
1:47 But I'm trying to live my life, drive my car, have a nice little experience.
1:51 I shouldn't have to click continue to use a car.
1:55 The folks at Kia and Hyundai and other car companies,
1:58 you might think that that we're going to sue you if we get
2:01 into an accident because we were looking at the screen, but that's stupid.
2:04 Just put it in the user manual.
2:06 Have it like be part of the first time I start the car up.
2:09 Regardless, the suing will happen because
2:12 anybody could sue anybody for anything.
2:14 But I don't like it's very difficult
2:15 to imagine a situation where somebody is like, "I didn't know that when I was
2:19 driving I shouldn't stare at the screen." Obviously,
2:22 I'm not a lawyer, but other car companies don't do this, so it is not required.
2:26 So, it is optional and please stop doing it.
2:28 And now, here's current Hank to tell you
2:29 that regardless of what I discovered in the future,
2:31 discovered discover in the future, it shouldn't be that way.
2:34 Either the regulation should change or the car companies should stop doing it.
2:37 Now, I'm going to show you the thing
2:39 that is exceptionally infuriating about my particular car.
2:42 Once I click the continue button, I get this screen.
2:46 And that that other screen will eventually go away if you drive for a while.
2:49 But this one will never go away.
2:51 You can drive around and these three paragraphs will
2:54 be here on this screen until you hit a button.
2:56 And often times, because I'm not clicking the continue button,
2:59 I'm just waiting for that screen to time out.
3:00 This will pop up while I am driving.
3:02 And it's a bunch of words to read on a screen that is
3:06 very specifically not the road that I'm supposed to be looking at.
3:09 What is this?
3:10 Hello.
3:11 With Blue Link, experience advanced services,
3:14 including more accurate navigation,
3:16 network-based voice recognition, and remote vehicle control.
3:19 Press start to activate the service.
3:21 To proceed with the activation, a smartphone must be used for safety.
3:25 Continue after parking the vehicle.
3:27 If you would like me to continue after parking the vehicle,
3:30 why is this screen on while I'm driving the vehicle?
3:33 And this screen does not go away no matter how much you drive.
3:35 You have to look away from the road to hit the later button.
3:38 But Hank, what if you want this screen to go away?
3:40 Well, to stop displaying the blue link activation setup.
3:43 I guess that's what this is.
3:44 Disable it in blue link settings,
3:46 which is a separate screen that does not have a button on this screen.
3:50 So to go and do it, you have to hit later
3:52 and then you have to go to settings and you have to find
3:53 blue link settings and you have to say stop displaying this blue
3:56 link activation help message which I for clarity absolutely could and should do.
4:00 But I am not the kind of guy who does that kind of thing.
4:03 I am one of many people who maybe suffer from a little bit
4:07 of a lack of executive function sometimes and I'm not going to do that.
4:10 Like eventually I will but literally like potentially years from now.
4:15 Is that a personal failing?
4:17 Absolutely yes.
4:18 But what you are implying with this series of messages is that people have
4:22 personal failings and that you know that people
4:24 have personal failings because you're telling them
4:26 to not disobey the law on a little screen in their car when people are
4:30 aware of the fact that laws exist
4:32 specifically to prevent them from doing certain things.
4:34 Like that's what a law is.
4:35 Now you got to pretend like we don't have failings.
4:37 And why?
4:38 Why have you made this series of user experience decisions?
4:41 This is an advertisement.
4:44 That's my case.
4:45 What else might this be besides an advertisement?
4:48 It is a thing that is letting me know about a product or service that I
4:51 am not currently signed up for that it would like me to sign up for.
4:55 This is an in-car ad from Hyundai by Hyundai
4:58 for Hyundai drivers that they are forcing me to look at.
5:00 And if I would like to not look at it anymore,
5:02 they have not given me a third button to say ignore.
5:05 They have said you're going to have to go
5:06 through this wholeing process to deal with it.
5:08 You do get a later button though.
5:10 You can have the later button,
5:12 which is of course the button that they expect you to hit while
5:15 you're driving because this screen has come up not before you started driving,
5:20 but while you are behind the wheel and the car is moving,
5:23 which is functionally the thing that the previous
5:25 screen that annoys me every time I turn
5:28 in the car that does not need to be there is telling me to not do.
5:31 So, Hyundai, I love this car.
5:33 I think it's a great car.
5:34 I I recommend every part of this car to everyone I know.
5:38 I'm going to give you one piece of advice and you should take it.
5:41 It does not increase my experience of enjoyment
5:45 of the car to have a little screen
5:47 come up and nag me to tell me that I should obey the laws of my nation.
5:51 That's not helpful and not good.
5:53 And maybe I discovered that this is a regulation.
5:55 In which case, I don't blame you.
5:57 I blame the people who wrote the regulations and the people who passed the law.
6:00 So maybe you can ignore that one.
6:02 But please don't ignore this one.
6:03 Give me an ignore button.
6:05 I don't know what Blue Link is.
6:06 I drive my car the way I drive my car.
6:09 I don't need all of those other things.
6:10 I don't want them.
6:11 You can let me know about it one time, but you got to give me that ignore button
6:14 or I will like stop recommending your car to people.
6:17 But more than that, I actually do believe
6:19 in government regulations and here's one that you should have.
6:22 It should not be legal to open up a wall of text that interferes
6:25 with my ability to use my car while I am driving my car.
6:29 You should not be able to do that.
6:30 There should be a law against that.
6:32 And what's more, I think,
6:34 and this is going to be more controversial and less likely to pass,
6:37 but I think there should be a law against using my car to advertise to me.
6:40 I think that if I want to add a product or service,
6:43 you can let me know about that product or service
6:45 on an ad that plays on a YouTube video or on television,
6:49 not on a product that I purchased.
6:51 Like, I should not be being advertised to in my car by my car.
6:55 If you have a great product or service, people are going to use it.
6:58 If it's not a great product or service, people aren't going to use it.
7:01 Why do you want me to sign up for it so bad?
7:03 Let me check and see if it costs money.
7:04 Oh, that's so weird and surprising.
7:06 It turns out it's $10 a month.
7:07 Let's go home and play some connections.
7:10 Okay, actually, but first, now that I know that this costs money,
7:12 I am going to click on the later button and I'm going to go to settings.
7:14 Blue link um blue link settings.
7:17 Blue link activation help displays blue link activation
7:20 help screen which assists in subscription and activation.
7:23 Boom.
7:23 I did it everybody.
7:25 You you at home, thank you for being the reason I
7:27 wanted to make this video because you became my executive function.
7:31 Can I turn off that screen at the beginning that tells me to not break laws?
7:35 I can't find it.
7:36 If it's possible, please let me know in the comments.
7:38 Okay, now let's play connections.
7:39 Before we do that though, I wonder if I could help solve a problem for you.
7:42 So, in the US, it's about to be Mother's Day and maybe
7:44 you'd like to get something for your mom for Mother's Day,
7:46 but like you don't, you know, you'd like to, but then you don't.
7:50 So, I have, I think, a good solution to this problem.
7:52 Two big advantages to good dotstore Mother's Day shopping.
7:55 Number one, we have a bunch of stuff
7:56 on sale that mothers specifically might like.
7:58 We even have a Mother's Day care package.
8:00 It has tea and soap and a candle and lip balm.
8:03 It's just nice stuff.
8:04 You know, it's nice stuff for your mom.
8:05 But there's another good thing which is that moms mostly,
8:09 not all of them, but mostly they know what it's like.
8:11 How scary it is, how exciting it is, how unpleasant it is to give birth.
8:15 And so moms might like to know that all
8:17 of the profit goes to make the world a better place,
8:18 including funding the maternal center of excellence in Sierra Leone,
8:21 which already has had hundreds of babies born at it.
8:24 It took years for a ticket completed, but good.
8:27 Store is the biggest single source of funding for that hospital.
8:30 So yeah, your purchase supports your mother and also other mothers
8:34 and your mother can know
8:35 that your purchase supported multiple mothers, including her.
8:38 Look, we're solving problems in every direction here,
8:40 and you should check it out.
8:41 Good.
8:42 There's link in the description.
8:43 Okay, let's do connections.
8:44 Wireless plank KitKat.
8:46 There's KitKat in the news right now.
8:48 That's what I was recording this video.
8:49 A bunch of Kit Kats got stolen.
8:51 Chickflick KitKat.
8:52 I was hoping that would be a thing, but it doesn't look like it.
8:54 Crunch.
8:55 That's also a chocolate bar.
8:56 Push-up sports.
8:58 Push-up cataphrase plank.
9:00 Sports chickflick cannon.
9:02 Crows nest.
9:03 That's like a thing that can happen to people's hair.
9:05 There's like a crow's nest thing there.
9:06 There's al it's also part of a ship.
9:08 Pinch plunge.
9:09 Jolly Rodger.
9:11 That's not a candy, but it's close.
9:13 Absence fry cook deficit.
9:16 Oh no, I didn't see a a fourth.
9:18 I didn't see a fourth exercise.
9:20 A Jolly Rodger.
9:21 A sports a wireless.
9:22 A crunch.
9:23 A crunch.
9:23 A crunch.
9:24 So Jolly Roger is not a Jolly Rancher.
9:26 Kit Kat clearly is trying to mislead me here or or or drag me into something.
9:32 But plank push-up, calf raise, crunch, all that seems like a category.
9:35 It's very easy, but it seems like a category.
9:37 That's good enough for me.
9:38 Deficit cannon.
9:40 Two ends.
9:41 I'm not sure which one that is.
9:42 That's too bad.
9:43 Fry cook wireless.
9:45 Kit Kats come in four bars and so can your wireless.
9:50 Yeah.
9:50 Yeah.
9:51 No, no, no.
9:52 Can't be.
9:53 And a jolly Roger and a fry cook.
9:55 Those are the two-word ones.
9:57 No way.
9:57 Are they all related?
9:58 Pinch.
9:59 Absence.
10:00 I mean, KitKat.
10:02 What we do?
10:03 We figure out the weirdest word.
10:05 The weirdest word is probably Jolly Roger.
10:07 Jolly Rodger is very weird, but like I don't like Jolly Roger.
10:11 I don't actually know what that is.
10:12 I've heard the term before.
10:14 Is it like a It's It feels like it's from the 50s.
10:17 Jolly Roger.
10:18 Jolly Roger.
10:20 I don't know what that is, unfortunately.
10:21 Fry cook is really specific.
10:23 What are fry cooks do?
10:24 They cook fries almost exclusively.
10:27 They're part of a restaurant team deficit in a pinch.
10:31 Like if you have to.
10:32 Absence.
10:33 Man, this is Oh, boy.
10:36 It got tricky up in here.
10:38 I feel good about push-up crunch, calf raise, plank.
10:40 There's also like what we what we can guess is that Kit Kat is
10:44 not in the same category as as Jolly Roger or what's the other candy?
10:50 Oh, Crunch.
10:51 Shoot.
10:52 That doesn't actually help at all.
10:53 Plunge.
10:54 Cold.
10:54 Plunge.
10:55 Cold.
10:56 Absence.
10:57 Things that make the heart grow fonder.
10:59 Uh-oh.
10:59 When am I supposed to be somewhere?
11:00 No.
11:01 In in a in an hour.
11:02 That's great.
11:03 I have an hour to finish this connections, everybody.
11:05 That shouldn't be too bad.
11:06 Crow's nest is really just the nest of a crow
11:10 or it's the place on a ship where the person is
11:14 to look out and see what's going on or it's
11:18 a hair thing or it's something about the word crow's nest.
11:22 The plank that's also part of a ship like a pirate ship and a cannon
11:27 and Jolly Roger now that I'm looking at it that that feels piratey.
11:30 So we've got like a piratey category.
11:33 I got a little confused though because I thought plank
11:37 was from the workouts category and now I'm super worried.
11:42 This is why it's been so hard.
11:43 The freaking exercises with a freaking red herring.
11:46 This must be relaxing me.
11:48 It's not.
11:49 So what what else can we learn from this then?
11:52 Chick and a calf are both small animals from barnyards.
11:58 So is that a thing?
11:59 Fry.
12:00 Fry is a small fish.
12:03 That's awesome.
12:04 Okay.
12:05 And a kit is a small cat.
12:07 Great.
12:08 A chick, a calf, a fry, and a kit.
12:11 Okay.
12:12 All right.
12:12 Now we're getting somewhere.
12:14 Now we're getting somewhere.
12:16 Turns out that there was a there was
12:17 an overlapping red herring with the candy bar thing.
12:20 Crunch.
12:21 No.
12:21 No.
12:22 No.
12:22 No.
12:23 Not plank.
12:23 Plunge.
12:25 Pinch.
12:27 Crunch.
12:28 Those all kind of feel similar.
12:30 Pushup.
12:31 What?
12:32 No.
12:33 Okay.
12:33 So, we've got pinch sports plunge, wireless crunch, push-up, deficit.
12:39 There's something about pinch, plunge, crunch, push-up that feels like a thing,
12:44 which would leave us with deficit, sports, wireless, and chickflick.
12:49 No, not chickflick.
12:50 And and absence.
12:52 I'm struggling here.
12:53 Still struggling.
12:54 Still struggling.
12:55 Um, did I just not see this?
12:57 Listen, it's been here the whole time.
12:58 Pinch, absence, deficit.
13:00 You're in a pinch.
13:02 You're You have an absence.
13:03 You're in a deficit.
13:04 I don't know about plunge.
13:06 Kind of like when like the market is plunging.
13:09 That's like a like less.
13:10 And that then that would leave us with wireless sports pushup.
13:16 Oh, a crunch.
13:18 You're in a crunch.
13:19 You're in a crunch.
13:19 You're in a deficit.
13:20 You're in a crunch.
13:21 You're in an absence.
13:21 You're in a pinch.
13:23 Okay.
13:24 And that leaves us with wireless, sports, plunge, and push-up,
13:26 which feels like a purple to me because I don't know
13:28 what the heck those things have to do with each other.
13:30 We're going to go for it.
13:31 I feel I feel strained here.
13:35 OH.
13:35 OH, THEY'RE KIND OF BRAS.
13:38 Never would have got there.
13:39 And that wasn't even a purple.
13:41 I just don't know about enough about bras.
13:42 Everybody really living my life right now.
13:45 Would never had no idea a plunge was a kind of bra.
13:49 I've heard of the other ones, but not even really wireless.
13:52 Like I feel like there are the ones with wires.
13:56 That's the category.
13:57 Wireless is almost every bra.
13:59 Right.
13:59 These days we've moved beyond that.
14:01 It's this one.
14:02 Is it this one?
14:03 I should have guessed that.
14:05 I should have guessed that.
14:06 That was the purple.
14:06 Dang it.
14:07 This is the That's annoying.
14:10 This is a good one, though.
14:12 I like that.
14:13 That's my That's my bad.
14:15 That's my bad because I should have known that category.
14:17 That was I liked it.
14:18 I liked it.
14:19 I think that was a good one.
14:20 And it was four out of five.
14:21 Okay.
14:22 Pretty good.
14:23 Pretty good, everybody.
14:24 Pretty good.
14:24 Still itchy from the shingles, everybody.
