25,000+ People Showed up To My Largest Type S Night Lights Meet in Long Beach
Larry Chen
0:04 Yeah.
0:25 Oh, I'm back again.
0:31 Hey everyone, Larry Shen here.
0:33 That was without a doubt the craziest car meet that I've ever hosted.
0:40 The city of Long Beach gave us some estimated numbers because we
0:44 weren't actually counting how many people
0:46 were walking into the parking structure.
0:49 They said about 25,000.
0:53 I personally think it was more,
0:55 especially when I look at some of my footage and some photos
1:00 and there were just certain moments where I literally could not see the floor.
1:05 It was so many people.
1:07 It was just the ocean of people.
1:09 I just could not believe how many people showed up to support car culture.
1:14 This was a record in so many ways.
1:16 A lot of people loaded in the night before.
1:20 Okay.
1:21 So, people left their cars in the parking structure thinking
1:25 that they would be able to have their cars in the show,
1:30 but instead the cars were going to get towed.
1:32 So, they got all shued away.
1:34 The very next morning, as soon as I woke up, I got a bunch of phone calls,
1:39 people telling me that there were cars lined up at 7:30 a.m.
1:44 already, and this is for technically a 6:00 p.m.
1:48 show.
1:49 We all know that the loadin is a lot earlier.
1:51 And if you show up at 6,
1:53 good luck even finding parking two miles away because I got tagged
1:58 in so many stories of people telling me a they couldn't get off
2:01 the freeway or b they had to park really far away and they
2:06 had to take a scooter all the way in to the show.
2:10 As soon as I arrived,
2:12 I hit the ground running with my team as well as the Formula
2:16 Drift and TYP S team to start loading cars in as fast as possible.
2:21 We were blocking so much traffic in Long
2:23 Beach and we were causing gridlock and I feel
2:27 so bad for the police officers because they were
2:30 really trying their hardest to keep the traffic flowing.
2:33 We hired 15 or so Long Beach police officers to help us
2:38 and unfortunately I feel like it wasn't enough because of how many people came.
2:44 That's something that we'll address later as well.
2:46 I know a lot of you folks were
2:48 complaining that the parking garage got filled early.
2:52 Believe me, there was a lot of learning from this event
2:55 and I'm bummed that we couldn't get everybody in.
2:58 We can never get everybody in.
3:00 The original idea was to start loading cars in at 2, but if we waited till then,
3:06 we would have shut down the entire city of Long Beach.
3:09 It was already bad enough as it was.
3:11 So that's why we loaded in cars as early as possible just to get
3:16 them off the street instead of them
3:18 just wandering around causing a bunch of traffic.
3:30 Oh wow.
3:33 Look at this crazy traffic that we're causing.
3:38 Dude, this is crazy.
3:41 This is a big problem.
3:44 Not good.
3:45 So many cars.
3:50 Uh it's only 12:30.
3:52 People started showing up around 7:30 a.m.
3:55 Some people even try to leave their cars overnight last night,
3:59 but it's just been so nuts.
4:01 I'm beyond grateful that the car community has turned out this way.
4:07 So, we're going to keep loading cars in.
4:08 I'm going to try to get as many as we can in, but it's a challenge for sure.
4:13 Okay, there's some crazy cars that show up, but holy crap.
4:16 Holy death cart.
4:19 Wow.
4:22 Camaro or what's left of it.
4:25 That is the probably one of the wildest things I've seen at one of our meets.
4:32 I love that it has the stock back seats in it, too.
4:39 And this guy is being super rowdy.
4:42 This is so rough because the entire roundabout pretty much this whole
4:48 area is just completely blocked up of all modified cars everywhere you see.
4:56 Damn wild.
5:00 Whoa.
5:00 Is that Chazzy?
5:05 Look at that.
5:09 Listen to it breathe.
5:20 Once the parking structure was full and once it was getting
5:24 to that time period when we had to load in the formula drift cars,
5:28 I did something that I haven't done at a Type S nightlights meet in a while.
5:34 I actually got into my Supra camera car and I drove all
5:39 the way from the aquarium parking lot
5:42 down shoreline to the Formula Drift Paddock.
5:45 The past couple events,
5:46 my team has gone and covered the Formula Drift
5:50 roll in and I look at those shots and I'm
5:52 so jealous that they're able to shoot that and I
5:55 just really want to be a part of that.
5:57 While it was very tough for me to leave the meat location,
6:00 I figured this was really important and I just needed to see this for myself.
6:05 Especially because my good friend Son Kang was leading
6:08 the parade and he's co-hosting the event with me.
6:25 For the past two events, I've missed this.
6:28 And this is honestly one of my favorite things to do.
6:32 One of my favorite things to see because we're get to drive these on the street.
6:38 It's just so cool to see these full-on drift cars drive on the street.
6:45 Guys, I need you to follow this car straight.
6:47 Look at this.
6:50 Here we go.
6:52 We got old Smurf here leading the parade.
6:57 Oh, along with its uh brother.
7:01 I'm so excited.
7:02 Thank you so much for doing this.
7:04 This is this is our kind of event.
7:07 Free-for-all.
7:07 That's right.
7:08 And all cars are welcomed.
7:10 It's going to be absolutely epic.
7:12 And plus, people are going to be able
7:13 to see the first seven minutes of the movie, which I'm so excited about.
7:17 I haven't even seen it.
7:19 You haven't seen the first time?
7:20 No, I haven't.
7:21 Well, it's almost done.
7:22 Here we go.
7:23 Almost done.
7:24 All right.
7:24 This is going to be a fun one.
7:26 Wait a minute.
7:27 Hold on.
7:28 Hold on.
7:30 How does How does this work?
7:34 That's fun.
7:35 That's good.
7:36 Good for you guys.
7:38 We're comfortable with ourselves here.
7:40 I see that.
7:41 I see.
7:42 I just want to walk through the whole parade right now.
7:44 So, we got the two tundras leading.
7:46 I gotta like squeeze through here and then got three las my Supra.
7:57 Hey, you got to you got to let people go by, right?
7:59 You're going to let people Okay.
8:00 All right.
8:01 Cool.
8:04 Oh, buddy.
8:05 We got the LZ in his brand new E36.
8:08 Got a Penso friend here.
8:11 Oh, jeez.
8:16 This got crazy, bro.
8:41 That's sick, dude.
8:42 So many people here.
8:46 What a dream.
8:48 This was my dream.
9:06 Heat.
9:26 Heat.
9:31 Crazy.
9:43 This is This is wild, bro.
9:46 It really is a beaver beach now.
9:52 That is unreal.
9:57 I've never seen so many people at a meat before.
10:00 This is the craziest heat, dude.
10:04 Seriously, look at this.
10:07 Look how many people are here.
10:09 What a dream.
10:12 Crazy.
10:13 We got people cosplaying out here.
10:17 It seems like the crowd is just not moving.
10:19 The problem is just too many cars and it's like everybody is
10:24 trying to come and see the cars and all the booths and stuff.
10:35 I knew the meet was going to be crazy because of how many shares
10:39 that we had on the videos that I published on YouTube as well as on Instagram.
10:45 I think total we had over a 100,000 shares,
10:49 which is to be expected when you host anything with Sun Kang.
10:54 But I didn't realize it was going to be this crazy.
10:58 I just could not believe the sea of people
11:02 surrounding Sun and all the formal drift cars.
11:06 It was a powder keg.
11:09 It was unbelievable.
11:11 It just felt like people were going to start
11:13 spilling over because of how many people were there.
11:17 And it just made me so happy and it was a really good reminder
11:20 that car culture is alive and well and you can't do anything to stop it.
11:26 It just has so much momentum.
11:28 If that wasn't crazy enough, we had drift demonstrations lined up.
11:32 So, now we're going to do our first demo.
11:45 This is the perfect time.
11:46 Pink skies, beautiful sunset, Long Beach.
11:49 It doesn't get better than this.
12:13 Heat.
12:13 Heat.
12:18 Heat.
12:37 Heat.
13:08 This is when it got a little crazy to be honest with you.
13:12 We had three demonstrations lined up, but because of how many people were there
13:17 and how badly behaved a lot of people were,
13:22 there were many people watching the drift demonstration that were legitimately
13:28 trying to unalive themselves because they were hanging off the ceiling.
13:32 They were hanging off the facade.
13:35 And with one slip or one misstep,
13:39 they could have fallen many stories down to their death.
13:42 And that was just terrible to see.
13:44 I was glad that people were out there
13:47 wanting to see it and they wanted to support
13:50 the city of Long Beach and support Pens Oil
13:53 and Type S and all the things that we're doing.
13:56 But I was just so bummed that people
13:59 just couldn't contain themselves and they couldn't behave.
14:02 And because of that, the city just shut down
14:07 the demonstrations then and there and they said, "This is it.
14:10 Just one time and then no more because it was just too much.
14:16 Someone was going to get hurt without a doubt." But you know what?
14:19 It was a learning lesson for us.
14:20 After that, somehow I was able to make it back up onto the roof.
14:25 That's when I had a chance to chat with Sun about the Drifter movie.
14:29 He's doing kind of like a world tour
14:30 right now talking about his movie and really
14:33 just pushing this project and I'm just so lucky to be a part of it.
14:37 I'm so lucky that he's willing to help host these incredible meets.
14:43 Around 8:30 p.m.
14:45 the fire marshall shut us down because too many
14:48 people were on the top floor of the parking structure,
14:51 meaning they didn't let anybody else
14:53 in and they would just let everybody naturally disperse.
14:59 It took a good 2 hours for everybody to leave.
15:02 So from 8:30 to 10:30, people were just constantly leaving.
15:07 Cars were leaving.
15:08 It was chaos.
15:10 But I'm just glad that it happened.
15:12 And I'm glad nobody got hurt.
15:14 I'm so sorry for everybody that had to wait in so much traffic to get out.
15:19 I got so many DMs from people telling me that they had
15:22 to wait 3 hours to get out of not our parking structure,
15:28 but the neighboring parking structures, which sucks so much,
15:33 but we just want to host these really
15:35 fun and cool events for everybody to come enjoy.
15:40 And for a moment there it was absolutely wonderful.
15:43 It was beautiful.
16:01 Heat.
16:13 Heat.
16:41 Heat.
16:41 Heat.
17:14 Let's talk about the missteps We didn't intend to ever do it at the aquarium,
17:20 and I don't think we'll ever do it at that aquarium parking lot ever again.
17:24 The reason why we did it there is because the Queen Mary,
17:28 as I mentioned in my previous video, was under construction.
17:32 My idea was to hold a meet there again and modify
17:37 a couple things so we could potentially fit more cars,
17:40 more vendors, and we just streamline it a little better.
17:44 But unfortunately, we just couldn't do that.
17:46 So, we had to hold it somewhere else.
17:49 And we wanted to reserve the 400 garage,
17:53 which is next to the formula drift paddock for the October event.
17:57 So, we figured, let's mix it up.
18:00 Let's do something different.
18:01 Plus, we can do a drift demonstration at the aquarium parking lot.
18:05 So, I figured let's just try it.
18:07 In the end of the day, it was really difficult,
18:09 especially because the aquarium was open during the day
18:14 and we weren't able to clear the lot until way later.
18:17 A lot of people were complaining that some
18:19 of the bottom floors had a lot of room left.
18:23 But if you can imagine, we already had a problem and we already had
18:28 to shut it down due to safety at 8:30.
18:32 If we filled the entire thing, who knows what would have happened.
18:36 I want to do these fun events.
18:38 I want to show the world how awesome car culture is,
18:42 but I also want to do it safely.
18:44 I want it to be a family event.
18:47 I don't want it just to be a bunch
18:49 of dudes hanging around crazy cars making pops and bangs.
18:54 I want it to be something that's very inclusive for everybody.
18:58 And that's honestly what we had.
19:04 Oh no.
19:17 And so if we're going to make a movie about drift culture,
19:21 about drifting, the hatachio, the corona,
19:25 I just want to thank the city of Long Beach again
19:28 so much for partnering up with us for this wonderful event.
19:32 So many people told me they came from out of country
19:36 across the US and they just stayed for Taip nightlights, which honestly sucks.
19:42 I feel like if you come out all
19:44 the way to Southern California for Types Nightlights,
19:47 stay the rest of the weekend and enjoy Formula Drift.
19:51 This is supposed to be a Formula Drift preme.
19:54 So, it's to kind of get a preview of the Formula Drift cars.
19:59 It's just a way to gather with like-minded people for fun.
20:03 Of course, I also wanted to thank TY S for believing
20:06 in me and trusting me to host these incredible events.
20:11 Penso, ST Suspension, and of course,
20:13 Toyota Gazu Racing for their continued support.
20:17 Without sponsors like them,
20:20 we wouldn't be able to host these incredible events for everybody.
20:24 So, what's next?
20:25 I don't know.
20:26 It's been so crazy thinking about what this potentially could be
20:32 or what could have gone wrong or how we can improve.
20:36 There's so many things I've thought about.
20:39 One of the things I've said time and time again is that I
20:42 love that we can do something for the community that is free,
20:47 but now as we've seen, it could get dangerous pretty quickly.
20:53 So, we've been toying with the idea of maybe charging like a nominal fee,
20:58 something small, and then maybe giving something in return,
21:01 like a t-shirt or something where it's still very good value,
21:05 and it's not for us really to make money.
21:08 It's more to limit the crowd in order for it to be safe for everybody.
21:13 That way, we can hire more security guards.
21:16 That way, we can hire more police.
21:18 We can have more bathrooms.
21:20 That way we can handle the crowd.
21:23 It's just something that I'm toying with.
21:25 I don't know what we're actually going to do because we've obviously
21:29 tapped into something great and it's something that we want to continue doing.
21:33 So, I hope you folks who came enjoyed it.
21:37 I hope you enjoy this sort of content.
21:40 Thank you so much for watching.
21:41 See you in the next video.
21:42 If you want to support us, head over to camerasandcarculture.com.
21:46 My book, Life at Shutter Speed, is for sale there,
21:49 as well as t-shirts, merch, pins, diecasts, you name it.
21:53 Thank you guys so much.
22:08 Heat.
22:22 Heat.
