Could We See Major Changes In The College Football Playoffs After This Vote?
The Pat McAfee Show
0:00 Big news coming out of the American Football Coaches Association,
0:03 which is the union for the coaches.
0:05 They voted uh in a vote last week, the AFCA board swung its support behind one,
0:10 a playoff with max participants, 24.
0:13 Two, discontinuing conference championships as a whole, okay,
0:16 the game that decides the champion where you
0:18 play all season to earn your way in there.
0:20 that has become quite a hot button topic over the last few years as teams
0:24 that are trying to make it into the playoff
0:26 are forced to play in a conference championship,
0:27 don't want to play in a conference championship
0:29 because if they lose in a conference championship,
0:31 it's going to be held against it for the playoff.
0:32 But if they didn't play in the conference championship like some of their foes,
0:34 they wouldn't have another loss.
0:35 So now all of a sudden, this conference championship game matter.
0:38 Why are we doing this?
0:38 It's an extra game for people to get hurt that are going in the playoff
0:41 or somebody to potentially work make
0:42 their resume even worse going into the playoff.
0:45 A lot of the big conferences have hated
0:46 the conference championship game over the last few years.
0:48 I assume that the fans will still love it and everything
0:50 like that, but the coach association said we're good with it.
0:52 And then also, we'd like to end the college
0:54 football playoff by the second week of January.
0:56 Okay.
0:56 Second week of January.
0:58 This year, the um upcoming national championship is January 27th.
1:06 Damn.
1:05 second week or second Monday of January could be January 8th technically or uh
1:10 if the math was to work out with a Monday being January 1,
1:14 which would obviously be great uh great
1:15 for everybody's schedule as you start a new week, you start a new year.
1:18 But nonetheless, they're trying to take a few weeks off.
1:21 They're trying to say no more conference championship games.
1:23 Uh there's also, I think, a by-week that goes from two down to one.
1:27 So this has been voted on by the uh American Football Coaches Association.
1:31 Now, upon hearing this, we go, "Oh, this ain't a bad idea." Okay.
1:34 Okay.
1:35 He's nice.
1:36 He This certainly does mean something.
1:37 Then we reach out to source and they told us basically that's cute coaches.
1:43 Okay.
1:43 We're[ __] in reality here.
1:45 All right.
1:46 We got five, six, seven more years of deals with a lot of money
1:50 going to a lot of your pockets and a lot of your schools,
1:53 okay, that are having a conference championship
1:56 game and the dates have already been.
1:58 So, we appreciate your vote.
2:01 duly noted is kind of what we were told
2:04 that this vote was kind of a piece of it,
2:07 but the AFCA has voted in things in the past
2:10 and it's gone publicly broadcasted and then ended up happening.
2:13 So, I do think this is a massive
2:15 sign of like the coaches just basically saying, "Hey,
2:18 we would be good with this if you guys were to pass
2:21 this." And I think the people that are to pass it say,
2:23 "Okay, well, wouldn't it have been nice to maybe vote on this if you understood
2:27 what we kind of have to do and are kind of a part of." So,
2:30 I think that is kind of where we lie right now, AJ.
2:33 Man, yeah.
2:33 I guess just putting it out there on the radar,
2:35 but I when I first saw this, I'm initially thinking,
2:37 okay, like what if us as a show got together
2:40 and we voted something we wanted the NFL to do.
2:42 We're just suggesting something.
2:43 That's basically what's happening, right?
2:45 Yes.
2:45 That is kind of what this funny you weren't in.
2:47 So, we made multiple calls this morning just to kind of see what this meant.
2:50 You were not here.
2:51 You did not get to experience this.
2:52 I'm appreciative of you thinking the same exact
2:54 way that I kind of thought as well.
2:55 As soon as I heard this, I was like, I don't think this matters.
2:58 So then we call a couple people and everybody that we called that would know was
3:01 like cool thank you we hear what you're
3:05 saying but this doesn't know this means absolutely
3:09 nothing and we're also told that the coaches
3:10 were not given any information or ask
3:12 for any information about things that are like
3:14 kind of non-negot you know so from my understanding
3:17 this is the coaches saying we'd be okay with this but the actual you know
3:22 decisions that have to be made are happening
3:24 by people that are like we can't thanks
3:26 for putting that out into the universe now
3:27 we look like even bigger[ __] whenever we have to do what we have to do
3:30 because that's not the reality of the current situation.
3:32 Because although people hate it and it certainly
3:34 is something that people can say ruins things,
3:37 the money and the business behind it all,
3:39 especially now for college football, is a massive piece of it.
3:43 And there's some things I think that like some
3:45 of the people that are voting on this are like,
3:47 are you taking pay cuts then so we can get out of if that's what you're voting,
3:52 is that what you want to do?
3:53 cuz we have to find a billion dollars somewhere
3:57 to give back if we want to do all these changes.
3:59 So, I think we're nowhere near a final decision being made on all
4:03 this, but I do appreciate the fact that we're all trying to push it to like,
4:06 hey, we need a better schedule.
4:08 Uh we need better this, we need this.
4:10 I think the coaches are saying that as well.
4:12 Yeah.
4:12 Like it's it's cool for football, for the coaches like yes,
4:15 all these things are done one last game.
4:19 uh the season's over basically before the portal or around when
4:22 the portal is so those teams don't miss out on as much.
4:24 But we celebrated it yesterday.
4:26 The Big 10 made what 1.3 or 1.4 billion
4:31 dollars and every single school got 75 or 78 billion.
4:35 Like those conference games uh more games in the you
4:39 know entire year basically like that is what it's all about.
4:42 And it's not just football like that that money that the schools
4:45 get it helps a lot of sports not just football.
4:48 So, like even if it's just the football coaches,
4:51 like you would also think the schools themselves would probably want
4:54 it to be the way it is now and not these changes.
4:57 The funny just the reaction of okay was awesome.
5:02 Yeah, I'm telling you it was one of the greatest
5:04 reactions I've seen to something in in a while.
5:06 Multiple multiple responses just going we already got enough on our plate.
5:10 We we know gez we got a thousand things
5:12 we got to answer and now coaches are doing
5:14 a vote without information and now it's getting public
5:17 and it's like I think everybody wants the right thing.
5:19 What is the right thing?
5:20 What's reality too?
5:21 Like what's actually possible in it all because
5:25 January 27th National Championship that one's locked in.
5:28 Yeah.
5:29 I think that one is is locked in.
5:30 That's the one that needs to be figured out cuz the last week of the season
5:33 25th, sorry, not 26th, the regular season is what?
5:36 November 28th or whatever it is.
5:38 It's the last week in November.
5:39 Thanksgiving weekend like and then you have three or four
5:42 weeks off till the playoffs and then after the semifinals
5:46 you have I think last year it was like
5:48 13 days or whatever between the semi-finals and the finals.
5:51 That's absurd.
5:52 Like the coaches are putting these things out
5:53 just kind of trying to throw things out there.
5:55 I think the schedule because we've talked to coaches.
5:56 I think the schedule is the one that they
5:58 probably feel most passionate about ending closer to January 1st.
6:02 Maybe not January 1st.
6:03 That's probably why they didn't put it there.
6:04 But for the portal and everything,
6:05 the coaches want it to end earlier than January 25th.
6:08 Yeah, it's late.
6:09 We would like to for the players like that.
6:13 Yeah.
6:13 The player safety the long season end,
6:15 you know, the players going to the next level.
6:17 Like you're in the at end of January.
6:20 The combine is what a couple a few weeks later days you got prep for draft.
6:24 Like that's a long long time
6:27 right in the longest season of your life coming up in the NFL,
6:29 which is obviously hard.
6:30 The rookie wall is a hit for everybody,
6:32 especially for those that play late into the college football playoff.
6:34 If it gets to 24 teams, I mean,
6:37 if without any adjustments that these coaches have voted for, I mean,
6:40 this thing's going to go till past Super Bowl.
6:42 Yeah.
6:42 You know, so hopefully there is some changes.
6:45 I also can appreciate the fact that the coaches are like, "Nobody listens to us.
6:49 Nobody listens to us.
6:50 This decision is being made by suits and people
6:53 that aren't a part of this entire thing.
6:55 Maybe we should just[ __] we'll just put out everything that we
6:59 have all agreed on.
7:01 We would like the world to know that we
7:02 as coaches think that this would be the right answer.
7:05 And then the suits that have to make decision are like that's not possible.
7:10 I wish we had a golden plated road that we
7:13 could all just walk down in this entire thing.
7:16 It's like well we're just letting the world know this what we want.
7:18 So[ __] make it happen.
7:20 It's like we got four different networks, five different streaming companies.
7:24 Uh we got five different leagues that have five different contracts.
7:27 We have uh deals that were just negotiated.
7:30 We got some off games to CW I think is having something like
7:34 we got a lot of there's a and there's a lot of sports.
7:36 There's a lot of timing.
7:37 They did go down from one transfer portal though, right?
7:39 It used to be two now went down to one.
7:41 Coaches voted for that publicly.
7:43 That ended up happening.
7:44 So I think they are trying to get it done.
7:46 I think everybody is in the mindset of trying to make it better.
7:49 I I do believe that.
7:50 How we get there though.
7:53 So much money on the line.
7:54 That's what I'm saying.
7:54 You got to if you have an you have like a solution,
7:57 you got to find a way to make up for the money you
7:59 would lose if you didn't do it the way they're doing it now.
