First Look! New Color Mode in Premiere
Premiere Gal
0:00 Hey, editing friend.
0:01 Did you know that it's been a decade of Lumetri color in Premiere?
0:05 [music] Yeah, it's been that long.
0:07 And while Lumetri color has simplified some things, it also has its limitations.
0:12 And that's why for the past 2 years,
0:14 the Adobe Premiere product team has been rebuilding color from the ground up.
0:19 And they just recently announced color mode inside of beta,
0:24 which completely reimagines the way that you
0:27 correct and grade color inside of Premiere.
0:30 So, in this video, I'm going to be giving you a general overview,
0:34 so that way you can start testing it out and give feedback.
0:36 That's why it's in beta.
0:38 All right, if you're ready, let's jump on in.
0:43 You can find the beta app by going to your Adobe Creative Cloud desktop app,
0:47 going to apps, beta, and then you'll find Premiere there.
0:50 Okay, so here we are inside of the beta.
0:53 And the first thing that you might notice is now we have an edit mode,
0:58 and all of the workspaces are now here.
1:01 Previously, the workspaces used to be over here on the right.
1:04 So, you can see right now I'm inside of the edit workspace,
1:08 which is primarily for doing all of your editing,
1:10 like cuts and effects and all of that.
1:12 And you'll see that we are inside of the color mode,
1:15 which actually, when you click on a clip,
1:17 you'll see that underneath the properties panel,
1:19 there's a new color tab with these sliders, which I'll get to in a moment.
1:23 But this is just something extra that'll
1:25 allow you to do some quick clip adjustments.
1:28 This is not Lumetri, it's something else,
1:31 which is directly connected to the new color mode.
1:34 So, if we click on color, this will take us to a brand new working space,
1:39 essentially an app inside of Premiere designed specifically for color.
1:44 And you'll also see that there are different workspaces for colors.
1:47 So, there's essentials,
1:48 there's a vertical workspace when you're working with vertical video,
1:51 and there's analysis.
1:52 And analysis pulls up the video scopes here,
1:55 which used to be Lumetri scopes, but these are new and improved.
1:58 You can see better data and visualization in here.
2:01 It will also bring up the effect controls as well.
2:03 But in this case, I want to go back to the essentials here.
2:07 And you'll see on the right, this is called the clip grid.
2:11 And this shows all of the shots inside of your timeline
2:15 edit without all the effects or anything like that.
2:17 So, you can click through them to quickly see these different shots up close.
2:22 Now, going back to the edit workspace, inside of the timeline,
2:25 you can see I have a bunch of stock video clips.
2:27 And notice how they have different color, right?
2:29 Not all of them match.
2:31 And that's why I want to use color mode to match all these shots,
2:35 so that way they look like they were shot
2:37 at the same time of day on the same camera, which they clearly were not.
2:41 They were even shot in different locations.
2:43 And by the way, all of these shots are from Envato,
2:45 who is the sponsor of today's video, and I'll tell you more about them later on.
2:49 If you want to access these clips,
2:51 I've put all of these shots that I'm using inside of a workspace,
2:54 which I've linked to down below.
2:55 Okay, so let's fix the color issue here.
2:57 Let's try to make a cohesive color grade.
3:00 And to do that, we're going to go to color mode.
3:03 One thing about the clip grid on the right is that you
3:05 can resize it just like you can in the project panel,
3:08 so that way you can quickly browse all
3:10 the shots that are inside of the timeline here.
3:13 And you can also click on show metadata,
3:15 which will show you the clip title underneath each clip, if that's useful.
3:19 So, inside of color mode, you can apply what is called operations.
3:24 And you can apply operations at the clip level,
3:27 at the sequence level, which will affect all the clips in the sequence,
3:30 or at a group level,
3:32 which will only affect certain clips that you add as a group.
3:36 So, you can see down here it says,
3:37 "Add an operation to get started." You can add a clip style,
3:41 you can add a clip adjustment, or add a clip LUT.
3:44 In this case, I want to start with adding a sequence operation,
3:48 and then we'll get to the clip operations.
3:50 I also recommend using a mouse to make color adjustments in this new color mode.
3:54 You will see in a moment, but basically,
3:56 you move up and down or left to right to make these adjustments,
3:59 which is a bit different than what you're used to with the former Lumetri color.
4:03 And it's much better to use a mouse than a trackpad
4:06 because you can get a little bit more precision with your adjustments.
4:10 So, the first thing I want to do is I want to apply
4:12 a cohesive kind of green teal kind of vibe across all of the clips.
4:18 And to do that, I'm going to go to sequence here and select plus operation.
4:22 And here from the drop-down, you can add a sequence adjustment,
4:25 add a sequence style, or add a sequence LUT.
4:28 And a LUT is a lookup table,
4:30 and you can already apply those inside of Lumetri color.
4:32 In this case, I want to start with a sequence style.
4:35 So, this will bring up a new window with all
4:37 of these different styles that you can choose from.
4:41 So, when you click on any one of these, you
4:42 can immediately see how it affects the entire sequence.
4:45 You can even see all the clips get the same look over on the right.
4:49 So, all of these have different modules that make up these styles,
4:53 which you can tweak and perfect to your liking.
4:57 So, in this case, I'm going to go with office medium contrast.
5:00 I like this, and I'm going to hit done.
5:02 And now you can see that there is a style applied here,
5:05 and there are two different modules being used make up this style.
5:12 And by the way, you can build your own styles in the future,
5:14 as well, by using these modules.
5:16 So, for example, you can see here,
5:18 there's a contrast kit applied that you can make
5:20 adjustments to, which I will cover in a moment,
5:22 cuz I'm going to make my own custom contrast kit.
5:25 And inside this style, there's also a saturation and a temperature adjustment.
5:29 So, you can see here when we click
5:30 on temperature that some adjustments were made to the left.
5:34 So, basically, by moving my mouse to the left,
5:37 it added a slight greenish tint here.
5:40 So, you can see I can make more of a tint or less of a tint.
5:44 You can also move up.
5:46 See how when I move up, it makes the temperature warmer?
5:48 Just by moving my mouse up or down.
5:51 So, you see how you have the ability to move left or right to control the tint,
5:56 and up or down to control the temperature.
5:58 So, I'm going to go ahead and click off here and press Command Z
6:01 to undo that, cuz I like the way that it came with the temperature.
6:04 And then saturation as well.
6:05 If you move up, you can make it more saturated.
6:08 If you go down, it'll make it less saturated.
6:11 So, that's how you can control the styles that you apply to the clip.
6:15 And it's non-destructive, right?
6:17 Because you can go in and make specific adjustments to that style,
6:20 and then you can save it as your own preset style.
6:24 Okay, we have our sequence style applied.
6:26 Now, I want to go over here to the plus icon and add another sequence style.
6:31 But in this case, I'm going to just use
6:33 one of the style modules to build an S curve.
6:36 So, we're going to use the contrast kit.
6:38 Now, an S curve is essentially just a way to add some
6:42 more contrast to your scene that looks a little bit more cinematic.
6:45 And we can go ahead and right-click on this and rename this to S curve.
6:50 And then using contrast kit compression,
6:53 notice when I click on this that the luma waveform is right above this control.
6:58 I think it's a little bit too small.
7:00 So, what I want to do is I want to make this bigger.
7:03 So, to do that, you can go to settings and color heads-up display options.
7:08 And you can choose to anchor it to any place that you want,
7:12 and you can control the size of it to make it bigger.
7:15 So, if you want it to be free-form, so you can move it around anywhere.
7:18 So, let's try this.
7:19 Let's make this bigger, so we can see and press okay.
7:21 So, I want to go to contrast kit, click on this, and now I can push down
7:26 to actually make less contrast there on the top,
7:29 but I can also push up to make a classic S curve.
7:33 And so, here you can see that this white line is in the shape of a subtle S.
7:39 So, you can do more, which will make even more contrast,
7:42 which in my opinion just doesn't look good.
7:44 So, I'm just going to do a subtle amount here, just a subtle amount of contrast.
7:49 You can always update this in the future,
7:51 and you can always save this as an S curve preset.
7:54 Hit save, and then you will see when you go to add another sequence style,
7:59 so now underneath style presets,
8:02 you can see that there is my presets, the S curve preset that we just made.
8:07 So, let's go ahead and let's just delete this one here.
8:10 So, what have we done so far?
8:11 We added a sequence style.
8:14 We also added our own style using an S curve contrast kit adjustment.
8:19 Another thing we can do at the sequence level is add a sequence adjustment.
8:23 So, let's click on plus to add a new operation,
8:25 and let's go to add sequence adjustment.
8:28 So, these are all of the basic controls you get with color inside of color mode.
8:32 And the same apply at the clip level, as well, if you add a clip adjustment.
8:37 In this case, I just want to add a little bit more
8:40 of a yellow tint to the highlights of all the clips in the sequence.
8:46 What we can do is down here,
8:47 you can see that there's global controls, there's shadows and highlights.
8:52 So, the shadows, you can see all the shadows in the image are selected.
8:56 And then here, all the highlights are selected.
8:58 So, in this case, rather than do a global adjustment to the temperature,
9:02 I just want to select the highlights.
9:04 And now I can select the temperature, and I can say, "You know what?
9:07 I want to make these a little bit more yellow." So,
9:10 now all of the highlights across all
9:13 of these have more of an orange yellow tint.
9:16 So, if I bring this down,
9:18 you can see that global change changing over in the clip grid, as well.
9:22 So, let's go ahead and let's push this up just
9:24 to make a little bit more yellow of a temperature.
9:27 So, here we can see before,
9:29 if we click on the global effects adjustment, and the after.
9:32 Before and after.
9:33 If you don't see that here, you can go to the button editor,
9:36 and you can drag the effects icon down here to see the before and after.
9:40 What you can also do to see before and after is you can press Command 3,
9:45 and this will allow you to move this slider here.
9:49 So, you can see that this is the after on the left,
9:52 and this is the before on the right.
9:54 So, that's how you you kind of quickly
9:56 check to see what adjustments you have made.
9:58 So, you can see as we pull this across that it looks a lot better, right?
10:02 It's starting to feel more cohesive.
10:04 Let's go ahead and turn that off by pressing
10:06 control three or command three on a Mac,
10:08 and now we have the comparison view turned off.
10:11 So, you can see that it's looking more cohesive,
10:13 but as I scroll through you can see some of the colors look different.
10:15 Like this shot is darker, deeper blue.
10:18 This is a bit lighter of a blue,
10:21 and this shot compared to this shot doesn't have as much green in it.
10:26 So, this is where we have to go to the clip level to make clip adjustments.
10:30 But, before we do that, I want to tell you about today's sponsor, Envato.
10:34 My team and I use Envato weekly to find
10:37 creative assets to use inside of our video edits.
10:40 So, do we need a specific sound effect?
10:42 We just go over here to sound effects
10:44 and search their thousands of sound effects to use.
10:47 For example, a pop.
10:50 Or even more specific.
10:53 Airplane announcement.
10:54 They have it all.
10:55 Really, their sound effects library is amazing.
10:57 Maybe you need some graphics icons to use in a design.
11:01 They have tons of graphics packs here that you can use inside your designs,
11:05 and they're unlimited downloads.
11:07 All of these stock assets, unlimited.
11:09 You can download as much as you want.
11:11 It's really, really useful.
11:13 Also, if you go to video templates, you can search for LUTs.
11:16 So, if you're doing color grading, you can get LUT packs here,
11:20 and there's so many to try out.
11:22 So, remember in color mode where you can add a sequence LUT?
11:25 You can download one of these packs and try out these different
11:27 cinematic looks to see how it looks inside of your video edit.
11:31 So, there's over 27 million creative assets and growing in their stock library,
11:36 but they also have been developing their Gen AI tools.
11:39 So, you can see here there are a bunch of different image generation tools,
11:43 music and sound, video generation, all here.
11:47 Their tools use the latest AI models including Nano Banana 2,
11:51 Kling 2.0, and 11 Labs.
11:54 So, for example, in our edit,
11:55 if we want to generate a surf music track to go along with our edit,
11:59 we can click on music gen, and this will allow us to enter in a prompt.
12:04 So, for example, here I can type in a prompt that you want
12:06 an upbeat music track for surfing montage that will match the high impact waves.
12:12 You can choose a genre, you can choose a theme, you can choose an energy,
12:16 or whether or not you want any lyrics, and then generate,
12:19 and you'll get three different generations, and then you can preview them.
12:27 I actually think I'm going to try and generate again,
12:30 and let's go ahead and try this one.
12:37 [music] I actually like this one cuz it was like a wave coming in.
12:44 I like the build in the beginning, so that would be perfect for this edit.
12:47 So, I'm going to go ahead and download that and bring it back into my edit.
12:51 So, if you want to try out Envato,
12:52 you can use my affiliate link down below, which helps support the channel.
12:56 Each plan comes with unlimited downloads of creative stock assets.
12:59 The number of AI generations differ with each plan,
13:03 so be sure to check those out,
13:05 and all plans come with a lifetime commercial license.
13:08 So, thanks so much to Envato for sponsoring this segment,
13:11 and now let's get into the rest of color mode.
13:13 So, now let's go to the clip adjustments.
13:16 And by the way, one thing I want to point
13:17 out is that you can choose to have sequence playback, which is this icon here.
13:22 It's already set to sequence, or you can go to just clip playback.
13:26 So, this will just playback this individual clip as opposed to sequence,
13:30 which is the whole sequence from our edit mode.
13:33 So, let's just go to clip playback,
13:35 and let's start with this clip because this clip is the most different.
13:40 It's a little bit more aqua blue color, right?
13:42 I want this to be darker, and I want it to be a little bit more greenish blue.
13:46 So, how do we update this?
13:48 Well, we go down here to the clip and add a clip operation.
13:52 In this case, we're going to add a clip adjustment,
13:55 but you can also add a clip style or a LUT as well.
13:58 So, let's go ahead and apply a clip adjustment,
14:01 and just like before with sequence adjustments,
14:04 we can go in and make individual adjustments here.
14:07 So, let's go to color shift here so we can manipulate particular colors.
14:10 Now, what's really cool is Premiere will
14:12 auto select the dominant colors from the scene.
14:16 So, when I hover over the orange color right now,
14:18 the only thing being selected is the skin tone of the surfer,
14:22 which we don't want to adjust.
14:23 The yellow, which there's very minimal yellow here,
14:26 and then some blue and the other blue.
14:29 So, let's adjust both of these blues here.
14:32 So, if I select this hue, I can go ahead and be like, "Okay,
14:36 I want to shift this color to be a little bit more green." So,
14:41 to do that, you can basically push up,
14:44 and now it moves our hue more over to the green.
14:47 We don't want it to be too green, right?
14:49 Just a subtle amount.
14:50 Also, if you go left, it makes the selection smaller,
14:54 and if you go right, it widens that color selection.
14:58 So, I think here's fine.
14:59 So, let's go ahead and push up just
15:01 slightly to make that a little bit more green.
15:03 Great.
15:04 And now let's go to the other blue, and let's go ahead and do the same thing,
15:07 and let's shift this over to the right.
15:09 And now we see more of a change because this is a more broader selection, right?
15:14 So, I think that looks better, but we also want to make it darker.
15:18 So, how do we do that?
15:20 We can also go to luma shift, and this adjust the brightness.
15:24 So, if we bring this down,
15:26 this will actually make our shot, this particular color, darker.
15:30 So, I think this looks pretty good.
15:32 Let's do the same with this color shift here.
15:35 Let's bring this down just a little bit.
15:38 Okay, good.
15:39 Let's also go in and let's make some general contrast adjustments here.
15:46 And let's actually reduce our highlights.
15:48 So, we can select the highlights,
15:49 go to exposure, and we can reduce the highlights.
15:52 And this is only affecting the highlights,
15:54 so we can just go ahead and reduce that.
15:56 So far, this is the before and the after.
15:59 Before and after.
16:01 So, let's go back to global adjustments here,
16:04 and let's actually add a bit more contrast back in.
16:07 There we go.
16:08 I think the highlights could have a little bit more yellow tint as well.
16:13 Maybe not that much, but let's increase that up slightly.
16:18 And let's go to exposure, and let's just reduce the exposure just slightly here.
16:23 In terms of temperature,
16:24 maybe we can add just a little bit more of a of a bluish tint here.
16:30 All right, so this is starting to look a little bit better, right?
16:34 Than before.
16:35 So, we have this is the before and the after.
16:37 So, it's starting to match the other shots,
16:39 but we need to make more adjustments to the other shots
16:41 so that way they also have more of a greenish tint.
16:44 So, for example, we can go in on this clip level here,
16:48 and there's a transition there.
16:50 So, here we can do the same thing.
16:51 We can add a clip adjustment.
16:54 Let's go ahead and let's click on hue shift,
16:56 and let's move this up to make this more of a greenish color, like that.
17:02 Let's also adjust this one.
17:05 Make this one more greenish blue.
17:08 Same with this one.
17:10 That more greenish blue, too.
17:12 And again, before, after.
17:15 It's looking a lot better.
17:16 So, basically, I'm just going to go through all of these shots
17:20 here and make some clip adjustments to the color shifting,
17:23 which is basically like the hue and saturation curves of Lumetri Color.
17:27 Just selecting the blues and then adjusting it by pushing up
17:30 to push it to the left to make a little bit more green,
17:33 not too much cuz again, we're just selecting part of the colors here.
17:37 This one will be more, so let's go ahead and shift this one over,
17:40 and let's widen our hue a little bit here.
17:44 Okay.
17:45 Before, after.
17:46 It's looking a lot better, right?
17:48 Another thing you can do is you can select multiple clips together.
17:52 So, for example, if you wanted to select
17:54 these two together and only make adjustments to these two,
17:57 you can press command or control on a PC and select both of these together.
18:02 And so, when both of these are selected, you'll get a new selection come up,
18:06 and you can click plus,
18:08 and you can add an adjustment to these selected clips together.
18:12 So, this would be particularly useful if you
18:14 have night scene and day scenes in a film,
18:17 and you have different adjustments that you need
18:19 to be made to all of the night clips, which you can add to a group operation,
18:24 and you can add adjustments to that group.
18:26 Okay, so I'm going to go through
18:27 and make all these individual adjustments to these clips,
18:31 and I'll see you back with the finished grade.
18:33 As you can see, I'm done here grading all these shots here,
18:37 and each individual clip here,
18:39 if we go back to clip playback, has its own clip adjustments.
18:43 You can see I've made an adjustment here.
18:45 I made an adjustment here.
18:47 Adjustments here on all of them.
18:50 And all of them also have all
18:51 of these sequence operations applied to them as well.
18:55 A style, an S curve, and the highlight temp adjustment we made to make
19:00 everything a little bit more yellow in the highlights,
19:03 and you can see it just looks far more cohesive.
19:06 And remember, you can always go over here to a command
19:09 three or control three to see the before and after.
19:13 If you click on the center here,
19:15 it will switch between the original and the current on the left and the right.
19:19 So, we can click on that if we want the before to be on the left,
19:22 and then we can just drag this to the left to see the before and the after,
19:26 and it's looking great.
19:27 And by the way, if there are any adjustments,
19:30 you'll see this tiny little dot underneath all these different colors,
19:33 and that means that adjustments have been made.
19:36 Same over here, if we click on the highlight temp adjustment,
19:39 you can see that there's a dot under temperature,
19:41 and a dot underneath the hue shift as well because we did end
19:45 up shifting the hue over to the green inside this highlight adjustment as well.
19:50 So, that's how you do before and after.
19:52 We can always press command three control three to get rid of that.
19:56 And we can always go back to edit mode.
19:58 And once again here, you can also see the global before and after.
20:03 It's called the global effects mute.
20:05 If you want to see before and after.
20:06 Also, while we're here, let's say we want to go back to this clip,
20:09 you can also make some basic adjustments to the color
20:13 of this individual clip here using these sliders.
20:16 There is no adjustment to the hue here.
20:18 You actually have to open up color mode by clicking
20:21 on color controls to get more refined color adjustments.
20:24 But this is just basic stuff like adding more contrast or adding more exposure.
20:29 One thing to note is that this is just at the clip level, right?
20:33 So, I did make a suggestion to Adobe to allow us
20:36 to have an option here to click on sequence or clip.
20:41 So, that way if we just want to make some subtle
20:42 adjustments at the sequence level to be applied to all the clips,
20:46 we could do that here, too.
20:47 As just a more simple way to do quick adjustments as opposed
20:51 to switching back and forth between color
20:52 and edit mode throughout the editing process.
20:55 So, that's just one piece of feedback that I had to the Adobe team.
20:59 But of course, dive in.
21:01 Go inside of color mode and you can test it out and be like, you know what?
21:04 I wish that this feature was here or I
21:07 noticed that there's a bug here and that's where
21:09 you can go up here on these three dots
21:11 and you can report a bug or request a feature.
21:13 This is why they put features in beta first.
21:17 So, that way you can go in and you can be like,
21:19 this actually doesn't work that well.
21:20 How can we fix it before it goes in the main build?
21:23 One thing I forgot to mention is inside of edit,
21:25 you can also open up the scopes.
21:27 So, you can go down here to video scopes and you
21:30 can see the scopes here as you make subtle adjustments.
21:34 So, these still exist, but again you get individualized scopes for each
21:39 control inside of color mode giving you more control.
21:42 One more thing to note, the future of Lumetri.
21:44 Where does it stand?
21:45 Well, inside the beta, you'll notice that underneath window,
21:48 there is no Lumetri color panel.
21:51 But there is a Lumetri color effect.
21:53 If you search Lumetri color here, you will see that the effect will still exist.
21:58 And they need to keep that here because all the projects
22:01 that we've had for the past decade use that effect.
22:04 So, for compatibility, it needs to stay there.
22:07 But I spoke with the Adobe team and they said
22:08 do not use Lumetri color effect with color mode because
22:12 it will create really bad artifacting in your clips because
22:15 they're essentially two different sciences that will conflict with each other.
22:19 Different coding, right?
22:20 So, you don't want to combine them together.
22:22 So, going forward, once it's in the main app,
22:25 you will just be using color mode essentially.
22:28 That's going to be the new way to use color.
22:30 So, rest in peace Lumetri color panel.
22:36 [laughter] So, if you want to learn more about editing inside of Premiere Pro,
22:38 do a deep dive, you can sign up for my course list.
22:42 We already had the spring cohort that just happened and it was fantastic.
22:47 It was an intimate setting where we had some
22:48 live office hours and we released new episodes each week.
22:52 So, if you want to be notified when we open up our next cohort for enrollment,
22:56 you can join the list down below and you'll learn everything from how
22:59 to set up your project all the way to exporting and everything in between.
23:03 So, if you have any questions about color mode or you want me to make
23:05 some more tutorials here on the YouTube
23:07 channel on how to use masking with color,
23:10 for example, using the new masking tools,
23:12 just drop a color palette emoji down below and we'll get to it.
23:15 [music] Thanks so much for watching and as always,
23:18 keep creating better video with Gal.
23:21 See you next time.
23:22 Bye.
23:23 Fade to black.
