DIY Removable Truck Storage Platform F-150 WITHOUT Deleting Seats

0:29 have done the rooftop tent set up the lift kit we got our new tires we

0:33 got our charge Station built the storage solution

0:36 is what's up now so I found this video by this guy named Joe from blacko Taco

0:41 he basically made a platform for his domenic

0:43 fridge for the back of his Tacoma I believe so I'm kind of using his video

0:47 and his blog post as a guide I have gone ahead measured everything I've done

0:52 a couple of sketches I ordered some materials

0:54 my pain point right now in the back

0:55 of my truck when we're camping is that things get piled on top of each other

0:59 so in order to get something out

1:00 from the bottom everything above has to come out

1:02 so I'm basically building two Platforms in the back

1:05 of the truck one on the passenger

1:06 side that's going to be 8 in High by 35 in wide by 19 in deep

1:13 and that is going to house the dtic fridge it's kind of going to go

1:15 in long ways and then the second one is going to be 25 in by 19

1:20 in by 12 in high so the one on the driver side is going to be

1:24 a little bit higher than the one on the fridge side and that is because

1:27 I need space to put my camera bag underneath but if I made both of them

1:32 12 in high and the dtic fridge wouldn't

1:33 have enough room to actually open and stay

1:35 open this is my first time working with aluminum is going to be a whole new

1:39 experience for me anything where the weight is

1:43 going to be distributed down to the floor

1:45 it's going to be assembled like this because

1:48 this is not a structural attachment but this is

1:52 we're going to see I don't know but again total credit to Joe for this um

1:58 but anyway anyway basically I need to build a top for the fridge side a top

2:03 for the storage side and then two sets of legs for either side let's do

2:07 the small one first change of plans ow my ears we're going to make the bigger

2:20 divid by 2 17 1/2 so we used a combination of 1ex one extruded aluminum

2:26 with these corner brackets te- slot nuts and bolts

2:29 and then I just just connected everything together

2:31 using my plan as a guide that took 40 minutes to put this together but I

2:36 have the top frame put together so the MDF is going to sit on top of here

2:41 I have to put in these little things so I can make sure that I can

2:44 screw the MDF in as well as these d-rings so these d-rings are kind of going

2:49 to go on like this and then get attached like this and that's going to give

2:53 me an attachment point to lash down my fridge with the top done Gaff tape

2:58 these end pieces next is legs and I've got to build two sets same process time

3:03 lapse so okay I have one more of these to make and then we can attach

3:06 it to the top so um two sets of legs I'm almost out of material I

3:13 have three brackets left I need two four six plus like 20 more for the other

3:25 as far as I can go right now with the materials that I have this is

3:31 the smaller of the two frames that I got put together and I ended up adding

3:34 bracing on the outsides because it was a little

3:36 bit Wiggly this way but now it's like Rock Solid which is deadly see if a camera

3:41 bag fits underneath oh no problem at all

3:45 but that works out freaking great so the Top's going to be closed and the sides

3:48 are going to be open as well just to keep down on weight that's one

3:51 down problem is the other one that I put together it's actually too long so I'm

3:55 going to have to cut that down so

3:57 you might recognize this Cobalt saw for our home

4:00 renovation series we kept it and now it's just dedicated to metal cutting so we

4:04 have a metal compatible blade on there once

4:08 Chris was done fixing my mistake we got

4:10 the MDF out and we cut down the tops for both of the [Music] platforms is

4:42 help I need is counter syncing these holes

4:44 to line up with the holes in the inside

4:46 and then the d-rings are also in here somewhere we just marked all the locations

4:51 where we're going to put the screws in and the d-rings get all that dry fit

4:55 once that works we're going to paint the MDF with bed rack paint I went ahead

4:59 and glued in all my little te- nuts in the tracks so that they will stay

5:03 in place while te- nuts so they will stay in place while we attach the MDF

5:09 to the frame after a little trial and error we decided not to counter sync

5:16 the screws and because we were using bedliner

5:18 paint we didn't really have to do a lot

5:19 of Surface Prep so we just roughed up the MDF rounded the corners and started

5:22 painting we have all the MDF ready we

5:24 tried truck bed coating spray paint didn't really

5:27 like how it looked didn't really cover

5:28 that well wasn't very textured we're going to test

5:30 this bed liner paint it's really chunky I don't know if this is going to work

5:34 we're going to try it out and see and hope for the best well it's definitely

5:37 chunky I'll tell you that much cuz you don't want to be sliding around on it

5:41 all right should we just go for it or what uh do we still like

5:45 this look how chunky it is it's like

5:48 just hanging off this is terrible definitely seems

5:51 to be spreading it better so I swapped the roller over to a smaller version

5:55 with a thinner nap and that seemed to put the product on a lot better that looks

5:58 better I'm seeing like big blobs on this guy in the end I put one

6:02 messy coat on the back as a trial

6:04 and then two good coats swapping rolling directions

6:07 on the top it was still chunky but I found putting it on heavy-handed coating

6:10 the whole thing then back rolling it gave

6:12 the best finish and then I coated the sides

6:15 as much as they needed to be coated until it was fully black and not absorbing

6:19 into the MDF now we knew it was going to be chunky I kind of wanted

6:21 this so things wouldn't slip around but I

6:23 cannot imagine diying this product on my truck

6:26 bed myself the bedrack paint is now dry on the MDF I threw out some coin grip

6:32 leftover coin grip a couple months ago that I've been sitting in the house for 3

6:35 years if I had my time back I would have used it because the bed liner

6:37 paint is really textured and it's also really

6:40 glossy I think I probably would have sprayed

6:42 a black then put a matte on the top but we're fully committed to this glossy

6:47 textured thing now things are going to go on top of it and we don't want

6:49 things to slip around so we're going to install it now on the metal frame we

6:53 have the d-rings being reamed out because the holes

6:56 are not quite big enough for the screws

6:58 that came with it um and we're gonna finish this project up they call me

7:02 the reamer the Redeemer open up your holes

7:04 like dominoes Domino yeah they got little dots

7:08 on them dots tell that to the Redeemer

7:12 the reamer okay the Cleveland steamer D- Rings

7:16 after Chris reamed out the holes on the d-rings we put all of the screws

7:20 in and then we tried to line it up with a little t- nuts that I had

7:23 glued in place previously this was a really difficult step and it was a bit

7:27 of a hassle we capped the ends of the aluminum with these tabs sir I just farted

7:31 I'm so sorry actually I'm not sorry at all it's like a little glossy like it'd

7:36 be cool if it was matte but I think that like for the ruggedness of it

7:40 it is what it is and you're going to be covering it with the fridge

7:42 and stuff anyway it's a rugged bedlined shelf

8:19 I did not want to get rid of my seats cuz we actually use the seats

8:22 so the key to this is to be able to remove it and put it

8:26 back in depending on if we have passengers

8:28 oh they're not the same height they're not

8:29 supposed to be not the same height K so the reason why we did two different

8:32 levels is one the lower one is going to house the fridge and the other one

8:36 I wanted to be able to put my camera bag underneath and we have this Gap

8:39 here which is actually kind of good

8:41 because I have things like tripods light stands

8:44 tar poles and other long items that can go back here and this can all come

8:48 out and we can use the seats by just un loosening the ratchet straps and taking

8:51 this out which is awesome the other reason

8:53 why I wanted to build the storage platforms

8:55 is to have storage underneath things won't get

8:57 piled up and super messy can also access stuff from the side that's why I kept

9:00 the sides open working with aluminum was a little

9:02 bit of a pain but it was actually pretty easy if you have all the right

9:06 measurements we did have to cut things down

9:08 cuz I mismeasured the MDF portion I don't

9:10 love the way the bed lider paint looks but it is what I chose and I

9:13 knew it was going to look like this I just wish it was a little

9:15 bit less glossy I could spray paint over it I'm not going to L di Mission
