3:07 It's kind of like our personality

3:08 this this these follicles that grow out of our heads.

4:06 So how did how did it happen that you you ended up going for a role

4:10 her for it.

4:10 She came in and we met and great actress, very beautiful,

4:14 cinematic and when she came in it was like we we just wanted her in the film.

4:20 But you you were uh five months pregnant filming this movie.

4:23 Uh well, but by the end,

4:24 not the whole way through obviously cuz I Yeah, as time passes.

4:30 [laughter] Uh yeah, there I have a secret stowaway

4:31 in the film which is which is quite cool,

4:33 you know, so But as the producer, you're one of the producers, Tom.

4:36 When you found out thought about firing me.

4:37 He tried to find I was I was pretty hard to get rid of.

4:40 [laughter] Actually, you know what?

4:41 In for insurance reasons they came and they said, "Look, you know,

4:44 maybe we should replace her, but we all there's no

4:46 way we're going to replace her." So what we were able

4:48 to do was is I would shoot with her during the day

4:50 and then I would do the stunt car chase at night.

4:53 So there are some days that what we shot 36 hours and I had a 48-hour time

4:58 where I was shooting first unit with Rosamund

5:00 and then second unit at night doing the car chase.

5:03 Wow.

5:03 This man would come to work with one

5:04 hour sleep looking looking pretty much the same.

5:07 very patient with me sometimes with the way it was

5:09 cuz There was one shot I think maybe only one shot

5:12 When we were at the bus stop I was actually I was so tired it

5:14 was 36 hours and I had that whole

5:16 monologue when when I'm leaving the bus station

5:19 and I would I could only had enough energy for the take so they would roll

5:23 camera and then I would wake up and do the take and then fall back asleep again.

5:30 [laughter] This story makes me sound like an idiot.

5:33 Well, I was so young, but that's very sweet of you.

5:35 It's not really an excuse.

5:38 [laughter]

5:38 Yes, I had no Yes, I hadn't I hadn't seen a Bond film when I got cast.

5:42 Is that because your parents were very protective?

5:43 They thought they were too have a television.

5:45 Okay.

5:47 Weirdo.

5:51 [laughter] She grew up in a cabin.

5:52 I know, well well, I'm just saying it's like the whole It's lovely.

5:55 It's really nice.

5:56 It was not primitive at all.

5:57 She lives off GRID IN A [laughter]

6:03 BUT BUT BUT YOU BUT THEN YOU'VE GOT INVITED TO to audition, yeah.

6:07 And they said, you know, just wear you know, some of your own clothes,

6:09 you know, some some business attire and an evening dress.

6:13 And I didn't have Well, I didn't have business attire,

6:15 so I had to go to my neighbor and borrow that.

6:18 But I did have evening dress cuz my mother was a was a was a was a singer.

6:22 So she had a great sort of '80s evening dress made

6:25 by my grandmother which was beautiful kind of big silk taffeta,

6:29 you know, like a peacock.

6:30 Had huge roses on it.

6:32 I thought the roses were a bit much, so I took them off.

6:34 Anyway, I arrived with this dress in this huge bag,

6:37 you know, at the at the audition.

6:39 And the costume designers and Barbara Broccoli

6:41 looked at this dress and they said,

6:42 "Well, that that is that is a very very beautiful dress,

6:46 but but Bond girls don't wear things more like this." And they

6:49 held up what looked like to me like five pieces of string.

6:54 [laughter] And I realized then that I had a whole education yet to happen.

7:00 But you got the part.

7:01 I did.

7:02 Well, they thought we've got to teach this POOR GIRL SOMETHING.

7:06 STEPHEN GRAHAM, 2019 HAS BEEN an amazing year for you.

7:09 Line of Duty, obviously you were kind of you stole Line of Duty.

7:13 You were so good in that.

7:15 But then Irishman which is still streaming on Netflix and Martin Scorsese.

7:21 Yeah, you knew Martin Scorsese from Gangs of New York.

7:24 But that wasn't enough to get you into The Irishman.

7:28 You had to meet more people.

7:30 Yeah, I met Robert De Niro which was which was lovely.

7:32 Did you have to fly over to meet him?

7:33 Yeah, I flew over to meet him and just had a little

7:35 We had a We had a sit down and a conversation.

7:37 It was very surreal, do you know what I mean?

7:39 These are my heroes and Tom as well as people who we grew up with.

7:42 Do you know what I mean?

7:43 So we never knew

7:45 [laughter]

7:46 You never went to school, you know what I mean?

7:49 Now, if I sing a song [laughter] to someone who grew up with me,

7:53 what does Does he Does De Niro just sit there and say,

7:56 "You talking to me?" No, he's he's very lovely.

8:00 He was really nice, do you know what I mean?

8:01 I was extremely nervous as you can imagine.

8:03 What did you have a meal or a drink or something?

8:05 A couple of cups of coffee.

8:06 I was only supposed to be there for like 20 minutes.

8:08 We were there for two hours, so Do you know what I mean?

8:10 So the meeting went well.

8:11 Yeah, it went Yeah, it's And he's in it, so yes.

8:16 And Joe Pesci.

8:17 Now, cuz he hadn't worked for a year.

8:19 He sort of retired.

8:20 He came back for this.

8:21 Yes.

8:21 And he sounds like quite an interesting man.

8:23 That was a different meeting.

8:25 Yeah, that was a little bit I mean, let's awkward's not the word.

8:29 I It was my first couple of days in that and I was

8:31 in in the trailer and and they they knocked and they said "Mr.

8:35 Pesci would like to meet you." So I was like wow, okay, do you know what I mean?

8:39 Casino, Raging Bull, you know, Home Alone.

8:43 This is Joe Pesci, it's an idol.

8:45 So I'm like, "Okay, this really excited,

8:47 really nervous." And that and I go and he's sat outside his trailer and it's

8:50 quite cold and he's there and he's got a big cigar and he goes, "Sit down."

8:55 [laughter]

8:55 I'm like, "Okay." And he goes, "Where you from?" I went,

8:58 "I'm from England." "Liverpool?" And he went "You're not

9:02 Italian?" And I went "No, I'm not I'm not [laughter]

9:07 I felt I apologize for not being Italian.

9:10 And he was like he was like, "Okay.

9:12 Okay.

9:12 Um you know, you best do this right." And I was like,

9:17 "Yeah, I'll I'll give it my best." [laughter]

9:19 And then he goes to me and this the worst thing as an actor you can ever hear.

9:22 He went, "I wanted your part." And I was I know I did and I was like,

9:28 "I went, "NO, BUT YOU [laughter]

9:30 YOUR PART'S MASSIVE, you know What else did you do?" And he was like,

9:34 and then he said to me "I knew Tony." And then I'm just thinking,

9:39 "Okay, this Can this get any worse?" Do you know what I mean?

9:42 And he was like, "So make sure you do a good job." And I was like

9:48 [laughter]

9:48 "Okay.

9:48 All right, thanks.

9:49 Lovely to meet you." And then I did a couple of days and then he he's come up

9:55 to me a few days later after I've done some

9:57 stuff and he's gone they all said you're very good.

9:58 They all said you're doing really well.

10:00 Do you want to come and have something to eat?

10:01 And I was like Yeah, I don't know too well.

10:04 And then and then we'd be talking and stuff and he'd go,

10:06 "Why do you have to talk like that?" I was like,

10:09 "What do you mean?" He went, "Just talk how your character talks,

10:11 then I can understand you." I'm sorry.

10:15 Sorry, Joe.

10:16 I'll talk.

10:18 [applause] I don't want to do that, Joe.

10:20 Yeah.

10:20 Presumably you've all seen adolescence.

10:22 Yeah, yeah.

10:23 Um Uh Ah.

10:34 I assume what's really gratifying is

10:37 the response of audiences and people approaching you.

10:41 And conversations, look, don't don't get me wrong, you know,

10:44 the the awards and everything is wonderful and to be respected

10:47 by your peers and admired by your peers and people who,

10:50 you know, I've watched you when I was, you know,

10:52 you're a wonderful actor and you're you're a huge inspiration to me,

10:55 you know what I mean?

10:55 I remember the play you did with Lenny, Storm Damage, which was wonderful.

11:00 Absolutely brilliant and it was beautiful.

11:02 And that was raising social awareness back then, do you know what I mean?

11:05 And it was was a fantastic play.

11:06 Ashley Walters as well.

11:07 Yeah, yeah, yeah.

11:08 And it was a brilliant play, brilliantly written,

11:09 brilliantly acted and brilliantly, you know, it was a wonderful piece.

11:12 So for me to be a part of work like

11:14 this which has a social conscience and can have an impact.

11:18 Look, there's many supermarkets,

11:20 but Tesco's and that's where I shop more regularly.

11:23 You know, I'll be in Tesco's and just just getting the shopping and bits

11:26 and bobs and a fellow will come up and he'll just say, "Thank you.

11:29 Thank you for the conversation that I had with me lad the other day.

11:32 We watched your program and you know,

11:34 we started [clears throat] to have a conversation about stuff

11:36 and we've never opened up to each other like that." Yeah.

11:39 And that to me, you know, that's that's it.

11:41 That you've achieved every more than you can even dream of.

11:43 Yeah.

11:44 I mean that's what a gift to parents

11:46 because it's such a hard conversation to ever have.

11:49 yeah, with any parents, you know what I mean?

11:51 It's a very difficult conversation.

13:42 "Never met this girl before." But it's because she

13:45 was like my favorite assistant district attorney on Law& Order.

13:48 And so I literally see her every week.

13:52 She doesn't know it.

13:55 [laughter] It was A GOOD NIGHT FOR ME.

13:56 I was really on.

13:59 But when I was your son there or was

14:00 he just very happy to hear about you meeting Taylor?

14:03 Neither.

14:07 No, he wasn't there, but of course he was very impressed that I met her.

15:04 It just really felt like something that I had to do cuz I'm like,

15:07 "I know these tickets are going to be hard to get."

15:09 I didn't know how hard they would be to get.

15:11 Um and people are going to like, I don't know,

15:14 people have lives and priorities and if they're going to dedicate

15:17 any part of those lives to coming to this big show,

15:20 to packing stadiums like this, I want to over-deliver on production,

15:23 over-deliver on the length of it, the exertion,

15:27 the the the kind of surprises they're seeing.

15:30 And I'm really I'm endlessly proud of feeling like we achieved that.

15:34 Oh, you so did.

15:35 You really, really did.

15:39 [applause] And I'm sure people people were there.

15:41 [cheering] I DON'T WHAT WAS SO LOVELY BEING IN THE STADIUM, the atmosphere,

15:46 you knew that in that stadium having to be like 90,000 people,

15:49 nothing bad was happening.

15:51 No one was having a fight.

15:52 There was no argy-argy kicking off.

15:54 Yeah.

15:54 Everyone was having the loveliest time.

15:56 It was the loveliest time.

15:57 Yeah.

15:57 And people I would hear all these stories about people making

15:59 friends and the the whole friendship bracelet thing was pretty beautiful,

16:03 too, where people would make friendship bracelets and they would

16:05 trade them with each other and they'd meet each other.

16:08 They are the friendship bracelets.

16:09 And it was kind of a sweet thing that the fans did on their own.

16:12 We didn't like market this.

16:13 This wasn't like a thing that we did.

16:16 Um or else I would have invested in beads.

16:20 But now we must just celebrate your work in in rom-coms

16:23 cuz they're such a hard thing to get right.

16:26 And you were in a lot of really good ones, big successful ones.

16:29 But the thing that you are a master at is the rom-com lean.

17:38 But I had that 4:00 a.m.

17:39 in my solitude on my own truth that hit me.

17:43 That lands like a butterfly and strikes like a lightning bolt at the same time.

17:46 That truth that you go, "Okay,

17:48 tomorrow when the sun comes up and I'm back in the masses

17:50 and all of the world's coming at me and all those offers,

17:52 I need to remember this truth." Now, I've been trying to get dramas.

17:56 I was even offered huge pay cuts and they're like,

17:58 "No, stay in your lane, McConaughey.

18:00 [music] You're the rom-com guy.

18:01 You got that down." Mind you, I enjoyed them,

18:03 but I was wanting to do something different.

18:04 Because I couldn't do what I wanted to do,

18:05 I said I got to stop doing what I'm doing.

18:07 So I said, "No more.

18:08 No more rom-coms." Called the agent, said, "Let's tell them no.

18:12 It's not going to happen." I went to Texas.

18:14 Camila's pregnant.

18:15 On the ranch.

18:15 Quiet down there.

18:17 Camila says to me, "Look, you don't know how long it's going to be dry.

18:19 How long are you going to not go with work?

18:20 This could go on, but this is non-negotiable.

18:23 We're not going back." I was like, "Not going back." Now, a year goes by.

18:28 Noth- nothing.

18:29 Nothing.

18:30 I call my agent, he goes, "Matthew,

18:31 I haven't even heard your name in 6 months." I'm going, "Okay,

18:34 I may have just wrote myself a one-way ticket

18:35 out of Hollywood." I start to think about other vocations.

18:39 School teacher, wildlife guide, maybe I'll go back to law school.

18:42 All right.

18:44 18 months go by.

18:46 I really think I've done it.

18:48 I'm out.

18:49 Um I get this this romantic action comedy.

18:51 It comes with an 8 million dollar offer.

18:53 I read it.

18:54 I pass.

18:55 I say no, thank you.

18:55 Comes back with a 10 million dollar offer.

18:57 I said, "No, thank you." Comes back with a 12 million dollar offer.

19:00 I said, "No, thank you." It comes back with a 14.5 million dollar offer.

19:04 I said, "Let me read that thing again." [laughter]

19:09 Yeah, same words as the 8 million dollar offer, but it was better.

19:11 [laughter] It was funnier.

19:13 I could see myself in it.

19:14 This could work, right?

19:15 But I ultimately said no.

19:17 That must have been so hard to say no.

19:19 It was, but it Saying no to it,

19:22 I think sent a little invisible message to Hollywood,

19:26 "Oh, McConaughey's not bluffing." We're talking about not flinching.

19:29 And I asked permission.

19:29 "Oh, he's playing offense.

19:31 He's not just doing nothing.

19:32 He's playing He he he's he's he's onto something." And 20 months,

19:38 2 months after I turned that down,

19:39 the offers came in that I was looking for and they came in in droves.

19:43 It went Killer Joe, Mud, True Detective, Dallas Buyers, Magic Mike.

19:48 They they came in everything I was looking for.

19:50 it.

19:50 would not have They would not have come

19:51 in if I wouldn't have unbranded for that 20 month.

19:55 All right.

19:56 Now, Dwayne, you didn't have to unbrand.

19:57 You had enough steam going.

19:59 I can make whatever choice I want, and I'm going to make this happen over here.

20:02 That was a time for me where I had to unbrand.

20:04 It took 20 months.

20:06 But, then I was doing and all of a sudden

20:08 my work was challenged in The Theory of Everything.

20:09 I was like, there we go.

20:11 Yeah.

20:12 I know absolutely.

20:15 And of course the third time you worked with David O.

20:16 Russell.

20:17 Yeah.

20:18 And it sounds like when he's directing you, he doesn't really have a filter.

20:23 He certainly doesn't filter anymore.

20:24 Um no, he doesn't have a filter with anything.

20:27 He He's just pure cinema.

20:29 He's just pure I think it's really lovely cuz I grew up like doing sports.

20:33 So I I don't whenever directors try to get like emotional

21:10 He'd be like, just do it without And then eventually

21:13 I learned that meant lower my voice A LITTLE BIT.

21:18 AND SO NOW WE JUST ALWAYS WORK TOGETHER CUZ HE knows equals lower voice.

21:22 Yeah.

21:23 I think I bet you Eddie's one of the you like the chatting about it, don't you?

21:27 I need to be like mollycoddled and told

21:29 I'm great in order for me to do anything.

21:37 No, but this was So when we did this interview together,

21:39 like Jen who's done more stunts and sort of action brilliant set pieces,

21:46 of Everything and she kept going back to the head smack.

21:48 That was the moment where I hit my head against Like tell me how you did it.

21:51 You literally won an Academy Award for this performance and they

21:54 haven't said one thing to you about anything artistic about the movie.

21:57 I'm like, I just did that head smack.

22:00 I would in the interview try to create some really complicated way

22:03 in which I did it whereas actually they just sort of they

22:05 sort of put a foam bit on the floor and they just

22:07 made me tie tie my hands behind my back and MAYBE DO THAT.

22:39 I just wrapped something like a block away from you.

22:41 And I was like, oh my god cuz Rob is one of the girls.

22:45 Like he wants to gossip.

22:46 He wants to Like he is just one of the gals.

22:48 And so I was like, come over.

22:50 But he's also like my daughter.

22:53 Like he's very He's a great father.

22:56 He's a professional.

22:57 He shows up on time.

22:58 But like I wouldn't like trust that like he like put a coat on or like you know,

23:03 like he's not going to like eat on time or something.

23:05 He like brings out a very like maternal So he comes

23:08 in and I give him a hug and he's like, you have any food?

23:12 So hungry.

23:13 And I'm like, yeah, yeah, yeah.

23:15 Come in.

23:16 And then he goes to the bathroom and I do have food, but it's in the trash.

23:20 And so while he was in the bathroom,

23:22 I was just like pulling food out of my garbage

23:26 And my girlfriends were like And I'm like, well, [laughter] yeah, yeah.

23:30 And then so he eats it and and we're

23:32 all just kind of like watching him eat this trash.

23:36 And then when he was finished, he was like, I'm still hungry.

23:39 Is there no more?

23:40 And I'm like, well, there is, but it's it's in the garbage.

23:44 And he was like, I don't mind.

23:46 [laughter] I'll get it out of the trash AND KEPT EATING IT.

23:50 HE SOUNDS LIKE THE IDEAL HOUSEGUEST.

23:53 YEAH, YEAH.

23:56 AND NOW BRYAN CRANSTON, WOW,

23:58 the dedication to your craft cuz in Malcolm in the Middle you would think,

24:02 oh, a sitcom, how hard could that be?

24:04 But the writers really they pushed you to extreme situations.

24:09 They did.

24:09 Uh they they often would say, you know, what would Brian not do?

24:13 You know, [laughter] I was covered in blue naked covered in blue paint.

24:17 I was attached to the front of a city bus.

24:22 I roller skated.

24:24 I And one time um the the uh the creator of the show came to me and said,

24:29 I know I told you that I would never ask you to do something I wouldn't do.

24:33 What I'm about to ask you, [laughter] I wouldn't do.

24:36 Would you wear 75,000 honeybees on your body?

24:42 And I said, yeah, I think that sounds cool.

24:45 I have a lot of questions about this.

24:46 This is

24:48 just holds the proceedings to go through these so Did you get stung?

24:51 I did get stung.

24:52 Ow.

24:52 Uh well, how many times?

24:53 Okay, so the first thing you when you're wearing 75,000 bees,

24:58 it should not come as a surprise if you get stung.

25:04 [laughter] OH MY GOD, I GOT STUNG BY A BEE.

25:07 HOW DID THAT SO THE THE THING YOU

25:10 REALIZE [laughter] IS is that when you're wearing bees,

25:15 you realize that the sting of a bee the about

25:18 95% of the pain is actually the surprise factor.

25:25 [laughter] SO, THE BEEKEEPER SAID, IF YOU GET STUNG,

25:30 let me know and I'll immediately like flip out the the stinger

25:34 with the the sack of venom in it because if you flick it out,

25:37 then it won't get pumped into your system.

25:43 [laughter] So, I had to stand that way.

25:47 I had to stand and in the scene I needed to turn.

25:51 And that's when I got stung.

25:53 So, I I said, oh, I felt a just a little pin prick and I went,

25:59 oh, I think I got stung.

26:02 And the beekeeper goes, where?

26:03 He's ready.

26:06 [laughter] And I said, UH IN THE [laughter] AND HE GOES, SORRY, MAN.

26:15 [laughter] [applause] I THINK HERE'S THE THING.

26:24 IT DOES SORT OF RUN IN THE Cranston family, the not liking clothes thing.

26:29 Tell us about your Uncle Bob.

26:33 Oh.

26:32 Well, Bob is indeed my uncle.

26:34 Yeah.

26:34 [laughter] We should say We should say late late uncle.

26:46 Oh.

26:46 He's my late uncle.

26:47 Late uncle.

26:47 He's passed on, but he was a a nudist.

26:52 Oh.

26:52 Uh yeah.

26:53 Uncle Bob was a nudist and uh That's the first line of a play.

27:02 when he passed away and he was Still naked.

28:26 He said, take that chair.

28:27 And I brought the chair and he decided I thought

28:32 he comes around and the chair I had sat about this high.

29:20 But I you know, you There does come a point when you feel

29:23 as though you've done most of what you want to do with him.

29:26 And because it's not based on language, because it's so physical, Mr.

29:30 Bean, it's simply it's popular everywhere.

29:33 Um yeah, it is it it has what we might call a global outreach.

29:37 So, like our holidays are misery, can you go anywhere?

29:41 Uh yeah, I can't go to many places where you are not recognized.

29:47 Um uh and it's the Yeah,

29:51 the thing I find most tricky is when people don't recognize you particularly,

29:55 but half recognize you.

29:56 You know, it's that strange thing of where they go [laughter]

30:00 Is that And of course that means they stare.

30:02 They stare a lot.

30:04 And they just look.

30:06 [laughter] You're sort of feeling, I wish that person wouldn't stare at me.

30:08 So, you know, I'd rather just, you know, hold up a flag saying, "Yes.

30:13 [laughter] Yes, it's me." Um A few years ago,

30:16 there was I was in a Land Rover parts department near Peterborough,

30:20 the kind of place you find me on most Saturdays.

30:24 [laughter] Uh and waiting for car parts.

30:25 And car parts you guys hang around a lot because, you know,

30:29 to get a part the guy has to go half a mile

30:31 to the back of the warehouse and then come back again.

30:34 And he brings it back and he says, "This is This is a left-hand one.

30:38 Oh, you wanted a right-hand one.

30:39 Sorry, I'll go." He goes and it takes forever.

30:42 Anyway, I was standing around with with a group

30:43 of guys and I could see this guy doing that.

30:48 Um and he came up to me after a while and he said, "Excuse me.

30:53 Has anyone ever told you that you are the absolute spitting image of that Mr.

30:59 Bean?" And I said, "Well, actually, I am the actor who plays Mr.

31:06 Bean." And he said, "I bet you wish you

31:15 were." And there followed this bizarre conversation in which

31:20 the more I tried to claim that I

31:22 was the person whom he thought I merely resembled, [laughter]

31:26 the less he believed me.

31:29 So, he But what was funny was how was how close he thought I was to to You know,

31:34 he said, "The resemblance is uncanny.

31:41 [laughter] Have you ever thought of doing any um you know, look-alike work?

31:44 Like you know, stag nights and hen nights.

31:47 You know, you could go along as Mr.

31:49 Bean." [laughter] And I said, "No, I haven't." He said,

31:52 "Cuz you could make an absolute fortune."

31:57 And And And I could tell after a while I

31:59 had to bring the conversation to a close

32:00 because clearly not only was he not believing me,

32:02 but he was getting quite annoyed that I was

32:05 pursuing this line of I am Rowan Atkinson when

32:09 And clearly he thought I was this total ass who

32:13 just so happened to look a bit like And Mr.

32:15 Bean goes around the country actually claiming to be Mr.

32:18 Bean.

32:19 You know, WHAT A I THINK OF YOUR CHARACTERS

32:26 EVER AS being mean or nasty spirited,

32:28 but do you think that Trevor is nicer than the characters you normally

32:31 Yeah, I mean, in Man vs.

32:32 Bee, he's he was quite psychopathic because [clears

32:35 throat] the bee drove him kind of uh nuts.

32:38 Um but in this one, he's not so psychopathic.

32:41 He He's actually He's a He's a genuinely sweet man, I think Trevor Bingley.

32:45 And I And And that's relatively rare actually in my in the characters

32:49 that I played cuz I think, you know, Mr.

32:51 Bean is a selfish, self-centered, anarchic child, you know, really a very,

32:58 you know, he looks after number one and is quite charmless sort of character.

33:04 And the Blackadder is a sarcastic, you know, sardonic, negative sort of guy.

33:11 I mean, humorously negative in terms of what he says and the way he says it,

33:15 but, you know, not you know, not And um And even Johnny English,

33:19 you know, the comedy spy character which I occasionally play,

33:22 that that he uh he's he's vain and sort [laughter] of again self-centered,

33:29 doesn't care about anybody else.

33:31 Um he's another knob.

33:32 Yeah, [laughter] yeah.

33:34 So, I think Trevor Bingley is a is a pleasant contrast Yeah.

33:39 to actually these this sort of Yeah, this um catalog of [laughter]

33:45 of I mean, just people that you wouldn't want to have dinner with.
